Shostakovitch’s Mighty Concerto is the name of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s concert at Poole’s Lighthouse Theatre on Wednesday April 27. The evening will see Alexander Shelley conducting Nikita BorisoGlebsky playing the Violin concerto No1, as well as Scriabin’s Rêverie and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4. Praised for his ‘deep musical thinking, impeccable technique, elegance and instinctiveness’BorisoGlebsky makes a return to the region with this concerto, which is a real tour de force and calls on everything in the violinist’s technical arsenal. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony is a truly thrilling work brimming with energy and tension which forces the orchestra to bend to its language. Meanwhile, Scriabin’s Rêverie is full of luscious harmonies which interweave to create a swirling dreamscape that ebbs and flows mysteriously. Meanwhile, on May 4, the Brilliant Mendelssohn concert at the same venue will feature four well-loved pieces, including the overture from Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte as well as Mendelssohn’s Violin concerto in E Minor. The performance will mark the BSO debut for violinist Kristóf Baráti. Tickets for this event can be found here: bsolive.com/ events/brilliant-mendelssohn/

Country show springs to life

by Lorraine Gibson

Dancing sheep, local food and rural pursuits are just some of the attractions at the county’s newest country show which springs into life later this month. The Spring Countryside Show is at Turnpike Showground between Gillingham and Shaftesbury April 23 and 24, with the theme ‘Bring Spring to Life’. More than 50 exhibits, demos and must-sees promise a weekend, jampacked with open-air and indoor fun for all the family. Marvel at the countryside skills of the farrier, woodcarver, blacksmith, stick-maker and coppicer and maybe try your hand at a bit of willow weaving. At the ‘Rural’ ring, heavy horse logging, terrier racing, gun dogs and horseback falconry are the order of the day, and in the ‘Woodland’ arena the famous Dorset Axemen will battle it out against the clock to chop through vast tree stumps. The Farm Yard has a funny sheep show, farm machinery and goat-milking, with the milk transformed into delicious ice cream! And in the classic cars, military vehicles, autojumble and steam engines area, a high platform offers a fascinating birds-eye view into the inner workings of the massive machines. Green-fingered sorts should head for the gardens, floral displays and garden goodies and foodies can indulge at the cookery area with local produce and recipe ideas in the Cookery Theatre. A festival area with live music, even more food and local tipples will open until 10pm on the Saturday so visitors can enjoy a festival vibe under the stars. James Cox, event organiser said: “We’re so excited to bring this new country show to Turnpike showground. “The arrival of spring is always such a positive time of year and there really is something for everyone.” It’s organised by the Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show team that brings the renowned annual Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show to the county every August. Tickets from £8.50 for adults and £1 for children - but the prices will increase once a specific quota is reached! Visit springcountrysideshow. co.uk or call 01747 823955.

Audience of 70 fails to guess ‘whodunnit’

Once again, Fordingbridge Twinning came up with the goods and produced another amazing ‘always a sellout’ murder mystery play at St Mary’s Church Hall, whereby the audience had to work out ‘whodunnit’. This time, only two (out of an audience of 70) got it right! Other twinning events on the horizon, include the AGM on May 5, which includes cheese and wine, a visit to our twinning town, Vimoutiers, Normandy, over the first weekend in July, a twinning members tea-party on Sunday afternoon,August 21, at the Victoria Rooms in Fordingbridge, and the annual musical soiree, again featuring the popular ‘Blue Tides’ at the town hall, on Saturday, October 29. Choral society is set to start singing again

Verwood Choral Society is back after a break of two years due to Covid, writes Sue Longstaff. We are hoping to meet again on Monday, April 25, to learn some new songs which will be performed at the town’s celebration for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Thursday, June 2. This will take place on the Memorial Hall Playing Field. To mark the Queen’s reign, a special anthem has been written and will be sung by the choir The Choral Society is always looking for new members and we are at this moment in particular need of both tenors and basses, but all voices are welcome, both male and female. There are no auditions, just a love of singing. Rehearsals are held at St Michael’s Parish Church on Monday evening between 7.30pm-9.00pm. If you would like to give it a try, please come along to one of our rehearsals on or after April 25. For more details, contact Sue Longstaff on 01202 829212, or e-mail sumlon@holmail.com.

Art weeks are back and celebrating!

It is 30 years since the very first Dorset Art Weeks! Following on from last year’s rescheduled event, visitors to this year’s Dorset Art Weeks (14- 29 May) can look forward to rediscovering an exciting variety of artist studios and exhibitions in unique locations and beautiful settings, and finding out what the county’s creatives have been up to during such an extraordinary time. There’s a huge amount to see this year with more than 250 venues taking part, and more ways than ever to engage with the event, including open studios, public art trails and group shows from a vibrant community of artists, galleries and public spaces. A new Art Weeks Directory will be distributed to libraries, galleries, museums and other cultural centres across Wessex in April. It features venue details, six regional maps and all of the information needed for audiences to plan their venue visits, create an art trail and discover more about the county’s artists, curators and galleries, including special exhibitions and activities which will feature this year. Artist and venue information can also be found on the Dorset Art Weeks website from April where audiences can browse full details to help plan venue visits and days out. The Dorset Art Weeks App allows visitors to create a list of favourite venues, curate their own art trails and view venue details on a mobile phone, and is available for iPhone and Android. From individual studios to galleries, workshops to collectives, pop-ups to projects, the event caters for all tastes and interests in the visual arts, covering a wide variety of art forms- ceramics, jewellery, film, installation, painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, woodwork and more. It’s a great opportunity to see artists’ ideas at their source, as well as ambitious group shows, and to appreciate the breadth and depth of creative talent in the county. As artists celebrate the distinctiveness of their local areas and the places which inspire their work, Dorset Art Weeks provides a unique way to make the most of Dorset’s stunning countryside and coast and what it has

to offer, and to discover the unexpected. Look out for the Dorset Art Weeks signs popping up across the county and pointing towards a great day out. With so much to see and do, it’s the perfect blend of art, food and travel, with some venues offering refreshments, along with headline sponsor Hall & Woodhouse offering warm hospitality at their pubs around the county. All venues will continue to take measures to ensure continued safety at this time. After a challenging couple of years, artists will look forward to welcoming audiences and sharing their work with you this May. AUCTION: The Vamps and, below, artist Pete Thompson

Vamps ramp it up for auction

by Faith Eckersall

Vamps fans will soon have the chance to battle it out for a unique signed canvas. The canvas will be one of many to be auctioned online later this year for Christchurch Hospital’s Brick By Brick Appeal to replace the existing Macmillan Unit at the grounds of Christchurch Hospital. The unit provides palliative care and support for more than 1,600 people and their families every year. The Vamps’ canvas is part of a series of designs, with doodles, sketches and lyrics by well-known names from the worlds of TV, sport, art and music, ‘brought to life’ by artists and then auctioned on eBay for Macmillan’s Christchurch appeal. Connor Ball and fellow band members James, Tristan and Bradley have created ‘Can We Dance’, a canvas featuring their signatures, which has been transformed into a miniwork of art by Poole artist Pete Thompson. Pete works in acrylic paint and liquid graphite pencil and is known for combining the ordinary and the extraordinary to produce dreamlike works. One of his early prints, ‘Doodle’, was bought to hang on the walls of the Houses of Parliament. His transformation of The Vamps’ canvas was inspired by one of their most famous hits, Can We Dance – the canvas song choice chosen by ex-Dorset resident and band member James McVey. Pete said: “The Vamps fans will know there are some really quirky scenes in the video for the song, with band members hanging upside down and strangely enough, a whole room of plastic soft play balls, hence my designs.” He said he was glad to be involved in the Canvas For The Mac event after his best friend received end of life care at the Mac Unit, and he revealed that both his parents had died of cancer. Other celebrities who have contributed canvases to the auction include Ant and Dec, Queen guitarist Brian May, actor Martin Clunes and footballer Marcus Rashford. All the canvases will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and where possible, a photograph of the celebrity creating them. They will be on show at the Captain’s Club & Spa in Christchurch in November 2022, with a 10-day online auction taking place in November. The exhibition will also feature donated art works for sale, including a signed, original pencil drawing from Dorset-based international wildlife artist Jonathan Truss, two stunning paintings, Cruise Race and Sail, painted by Christchurch-based artist Mark van Wingerden and a signed, limited edition canvas print My Fair Lady from Northampton-based artist Neil Pengelly. More details will be released soon.

Former Dorset schoolboy Tristan Myles is celebrating after winning both a Bafta and an Oscar for the film Dune. Tristan, who grew up in Witchampton and attended Dumpton School, Wimborne, received the award for visual effects at the Baftas on March 13 at the Royal Albert Hall and then at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles on March 27. This success follows his Oscar for visual effects for First Man in 2019. Tristan, 43, told us: ‘It’s an amazing feeling just to be nominated and recognised by my peers and Academy members, but even more exhilarating to have my name called out as one of the winners. “It is my second time receiving the award and I can tell you it feels just as exciting (and nerve-racking) the second time around!” After attending Bournemouth (Grammar) School Tristan went to Teesside University to study Creative Visualisation and graduated in 2001. His glittering career started at the Jim Henson Company in 2003. He joined Double Negative (DNEG*) at their London HQ as a compositor in 2004 working on digital visual effects (VFX) used for the Harry Potter series, the James Bond movie Quantum Of Solace, John Carter, The Dark

Second Oscar for Tristan

Knight Rises and Interstellar. In 2015 Tristan relocated from Dorset to Vancouver, Canada to work on more recent films including Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them and Bladerunner 2049. In 2017 he started work as Visual Effects Supervisor with First Man - a film following the career of American Astronaut Neil Armstrong. Tristan was nominated for a Bafta award for Best VFX but instead won the Oscar in 2019. He began working on the new Dune Movie (Part 1) and was on location in Jordan and Budapest. The film was released in October 2021. He was awarded a Bafta and Oscar in March 2022 - both for Best VFX. As for the future Tristan said: “I’m unable to share what I’m moving onto next unfortunately, but I am changing companies, moving from Dneg to Industrial Light and Magic for the next exciting stage in my career’.
