£5,000 raised for refugees As the result of a successful collaboration between Wimborne’s Rotary and Allendale Centre, more than £5,000 has been sent to Shelterbox to help with work they are undertaking to provide support to Ukrainian refugees. Shelterbox is a Rotary International Project Partner working in many countries around the world, including Poland, and aims to ensure no family is left without shelter from the elements. In conjunction with their rapidly growing Friday market, the Allendale Centre provided space for the display by Rotary of a typical Shelterbox accommodation tent and invited Wimborne Rotarians to take a collection of donations from the visiting public. The Allendale also hosted special events including one for children and an evening concert, the proceeds of which were also donated to the total fundraising effort. In total £2,174 was raised by the Allendale, with Wimborne Rotary contributing a further total of £3,160 from member and public donations and club funds. Rotarian Brian Dryden, who co-

Procession to Minster starts Holy Week The traditional Palm Sunday Procession from the Allendale Centre returned after an absence of two years due to the Coronavirus Pandemic for the start of Holy Week. Clergy, Choir and members of the Minster congregation gathered at the Allendale Centre where there was a short service. Following the Blessing of the Palms, Lift High The Cross was sung in Procession to the Square where the Gospel was read before the Procession continued down the High Street to the Minster, singing All Glory, Laud And Honour To Thee Redeemer, King, where followed the Parish Eucharist Service.
Showcase success
The cast of the very successful Merley Community Business and Organisation Showcase event would like to thank all residents of Merley and beyond, for attending this findraising event, in aid of Forest Holme Hospice. The event provided an excellent opportunity for businesses and organisations to network and also for people attending, the opportunity to socialise in a welcoming and cheerful environment. An enjoyable time was had by all and we are delighted to inform you that we raised in excess of £480. Thank you all.

Get a foot in the caring door Most people who are considering becoming foster carers, tend to focus on what their lives will be like when they are caring for another child. They will often look back at their own experiences, and feel confident they can help bring the same happiness and success to another child. Often they are right but in most cases the journey is more complex than anticipated. The truth is that any child who comes into care has been traumatised. The very act of being separated from their family, even without considering why, scares and confuses them. As a result, they can behave in ways our own children never did. This can be very difficult for a carer, as you realise that more than personal experience is required to help this child; you will not be alone. All carers need support, so every Footprints carer has an allocated Supervising Social Worker. In addition, high-
quality training, 24/7 support, regular foster carer support groups and at least monthly face-to-face contact with your Social Worker are all ensured. Footprints was started in 2012 by two experienced social workers and to this day the agency remains small by intent. We now have five Social Workers but the ratio of one Social Worker to a maximum of eight carers is virtually unmatched by other agencies. Footprints is based in Ferndown and our ethos of focusing on a small geographic area means you never have to travel far for training, which is offered throughout the year. Access to Social Workers is available 24 hours a day and all of our Social Workers know all of our carers, so you never end up talking to a stranger. So, if you are local person who has never fostered before, or an experienced carer who is looking to move agencies, call us on 01202 573408.

Campaign verging on nature conservation Easter tea &
Did you know that many of Dorset’s verges are sites of Nature Conservation Interest? Those strips of grass beside roads are actually wildlife havens and the county is promoting its new policy of only cutting them once a year, as part of the Love Your Verge campaign. The initiative is a collaboration between the
Coast and Greenspace Service and Litter Free Dorset. T he campaign also aims to deter people from littering on roadsides. The council wants residents and visitors to get involved by sharing photos or videos of the plants and wildlife they’ve seen in Dorset’s verges and using the #LoveYourVerge.

The guild’s next event will be a Spring Lunch. For info, ring Judi on 07787 386153.

of the universe displaying spring’s stars. After sunset look west for the clusters of Taurus the Bull (pictured). The compact triangular crowd of stars known as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters (440 light-years away) represent the humped back of the Bull, while the nearby V-shaped Hyades (150 light years) delineate its face. Above these stars sinks the roundish constellation of Auriga the Chariot Driver, its main star being yellowish Capella (42 light years). Capella is the Latin word for a she-goat, and the tiny triangle of stars to her right are called the Kids. Why the Charioteer is carrying four goats is a mystery. Clear skies!

We must unite to save this society Can we really let Wimborne Horticultural Society close down? With a drop in membership and entries at the Wimborne Horticultural Society Spring Show on April 9, there is a serious risk of having to close. In one form or another there has been a Horticultural Society connected to Wimborne Minster since the mid-1800s. Indeed the first mention of the Blandford & Wimborne Horticultural Society in several of the local newspapers refers to a show on Thursday, July 3, 1856, held on the lawn of the Allendale House. If the Autumn Show under the present society is to go ahead on September 10, it will be the 73rd Show. My wife and I joined the society when we first moved to Dorset 46 years ago and
over the intervening years we have participated in some very successful Spring and Summer and, more recently, Autumn Shows. So help and support is urgently needed. There will be an open meeting to decide the future on Monday, May 9, at 7.30pm in the Allendale Centre and an appeal is being made to anyone interested in horticulture to attend. Further details can be obtained from Tony Beard, show manager on 01202 880116. Anthony Oliver Wimborne

Perhaps Mr Chope could question government waste No doubt we are all pleased to hear (NS&A, April 8) that Christopher Chope MP will pursue Government waste, especially within the National Health Service. Perhaps he could enquire why his Government refused the findings of the June 2019 Nervtag government committee and did not stockpile any PPE equipment in readiness for the next inevitable pandemic and which duly arrived some months later, finding the
NHS inexcusably ill-equipped. Then he could ask why the Government awarded, without due tendering processes, supply contracts to random and often entirely bizarre companies, many of whom had ties to the Conservative party. The Good Law Project will furnish him with full details which also show that equipment supplied at highly-inflated prices often proved below standard and could not be used - this now stored
at a cost of £1m a day in warehouses awaiting disposal or destruction. Loss of taxpayers’ money to date on this equipment alone is £7.9billion. This is just the money - our money that his Government has squandered to date on the Pandemic relating to NHS personnel equipment. Space does not permit more detail of the horrifying Johnson government waste. Roland Britain by email
Please help me teach the disadvantaged to swim I run a swimming school in Wimborne. Recent hikes in the cost of living and utilities for businesses are gradually making learning to swim an elitist thing, putting it out of
reach to many children. Many schools also no longer have the budget or facilities to pay for the term of lessons they are supposed to, meaning many children miss out.
So I am hoping to start a session which is funded by local business sponsors where disadvantaged children/refugees, etc, can learn to swim and have time in the pool at no cost.
If any businesses or individuals may be able to help, please let me know at emmasosswim@gmail.com. Many thanks, Emma Waller Wimborne

Political round-up
All laws should be subject to scrutiny The Downing Street party penalties are a good example of what happens when laws are made without subjecting them to proper Parliamentary scrutiny. Even the Prime Minister seemed surprised that a short impromptu gathering in the Cabinet Room to celebrate his birthday was in breach of the criminal law. All this would have been avoided if the law of which he, his wife and others at the top of Government have fallen foul had not been enacted without any proper Parliamentary debate. There was no opportunity for the House of Commons to question or amend the detail of the regulations which created new criminal offences. No regulatory impact assessment was carried out, with the predictable result that absurdly disproportionate rules were enacted. As one of the few MPs who consistently voted against the lockdown
regulations, I sincerely hope that the lesson has been learned that never again should the Government bypass Parliament. In this instance the Government and its senior civil servants, truly, have been hoist by their own petard. l Difficulties encountered by MPs in holding the Government to account for its policies and actions do not only apply to legislation.
Are we ‘onshore wind supportive’, Dorset? Because if we are, there might be money off our electricity bills! How much? Not sure. Who gets the discount? Still working that out. How do you measure ‘support’? Erm… It’s this sort of well thought out, long-term thinking that made it in to the long awaited and long delayed Government energy strategy. We are suffering an electricity price crisis in the UK. Onshore wind is the quickest, cheapest way to bring additional generation onto the grid. It is not universally popular, so there is merit in the idea of incentivising local communities to accept it. Meanwhile, new nuclear plants take decades to build.
It may take a decade alone to figure out how to finance them. Whereas onshore wind turbines pay back the investment in six to seven years. We could put them up now, and take them down again once the nuclear plants are built. Along with backing more onshore wind, Labour would insulate 19million homes in a decade to reduce our energy consumption. Real action, now, rather than an abdication of both responsibility and opportunity. l Speaking of abdication of responsibility – what of the migration processing deal with Rwanda? Yes, we have a problem with asylum seekers and economic migrants crossing the Channel illegally and unsafely. Rather than work more closely with the
Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP
Health ministers in particular regularly fail to answer Parliamentary questions on time or at all, much to the chagrin of the Speaker. Many of these questions relate to the issue of vaccine damage and what national awareness campaigns are being conducted to alert the public to information from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. The MHRA has confirmed that ‘In a minority of cases the risks of the vaccine outweigh the benefits’. Public information is needed to enable individual patients to assess whether their own circumstances and those of their children are such that the risk of having the vaccine outweighs the benefit. A related issue is that of access to the Vaccine Damage Payments Scheme (VDPS) for relatives of those whose deaths have been confirmed by coroners as having been
caused by the vaccines. My campaign on this has struck a chord with many who have suffered suspected severe adverse reactions and I have received many hundreds of letters and emails from across the country supporting my campaign for transparency from the Government and changes to the VDPS. l Let me finish with a ‘good news’ story. I recently visited the Ferndown premises of RCV Engines which manufacture engines for remote controlled vehicles. They are market leaders in this specialist area but were coming up against bureaucratic delays in obtaining export licences for some of their products. This was particularly galling when one of the countries involved was being supplied by a United States competitor without any problem. Following my intervention, this has now been resolved.
We should not be led by a law-breaker
Dorset Labour GREG WILLIAMS French to police the beaches and clamp down on the dingy peddlers, we’ve decided to outsource the problem to Rwanda and the Royal Navy. This is the reality of British foreign policy today. Unable to co-operate with our closest neighbour. Openly mocked by Russia. Devoid of any moral credibility.
Is this any wonder when we are led by someone who, after having lied to Parliament and eventually accepted that he broke the law, remains in office? The argument from Tory MPs that he cannot be removed because of the war in Ukraine is a ghastly misappropriation of that country’s suffering. Someone who obeys the law at home would have more authority in tackling breaches of international law. Britain changed Prime Minister during the First and Second World Wars and four times during the Afghan war. Johnson is not doing a good job at home nor abroad, and war should not be used as a shameful excuse to leave him in office. I’m sure, however, we’ll see that excuse from our local MPs.

Parliament: The ancient and modern Parliament can be a place of modernity and development using the latest technology, as when President Zelensky ‘Zoomed’ in to the Chamber of the House of Commons to deliver a speech in March. But it is also a place of tradition and ancient customs, as well as strange terms and phrases. In May Parliament will be Prorogued, which means the current session of Parliament comes to an end. Before that happens, a very traditional ceremony will be held in the House of Lords, with important people like the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Serjeant at Arms doffing their caps at each other. Once the official ceremony has been completed, Members of the House of Commons leave the Chamber, and return to their constituencies. A few days later the State Opening of Parliament is held. We don’t know yet whether
Mid Dorset & North Poole MICHAEL TOMLINSON MP the Queen will read the Queen’s Speech, or whether it will be a representative on her behalf - possibly the Prince of Wales, who accompanied her last year. One of my colleagues from the Whips’ Office will be required to go to Buckingham Palace before the Queen arrives in Parliament. He will then be kept ‘hostage’ under guard, until the Queen returns safely back from Parliament.
This tradition has been kept since the time of Charles 1, to ensure the monarch does not come to any harm while attending Parliament. Parliament will also be searched before she arrives – not only by expert sniffer dogs and police, but also ceremonially by Yeoman of the Guard who will search the cellars in case of a modernday Guy Fawkes hiding below. The Queen’s Speech is read in the House of Lords – and there will be a limited number of Members of Parliament sitting in the gallery and the rest of us will be crowded in to stand in ‘at the bar’ of the Chamber. The speech is written by the Government and details the Bills we will be bringing forward in the coming year. Later that day, the MPs return to the House of Commons where we will debate the Queen’s Speech. These
debates usually last for several days and will be on a variety of issues which have been outlined in the speech. At the end of the debates, a vote on the speech and its contents will be held. Whereas Queen Victoria did not attend any State Openings after the death of Prince Albert, Queen Elizabeth has only missed two State Openings of Parliament, in 1959 and 1963 when she was pregnant. This is, of course, a very special year for the Queen, with her Jubilee celebrations coming up in June and I know that if at all possible she will want to give the speech this year. Please get in touch if you need help and support, including if you have family or friends fleeing Ukraine. I am continuing to have surgeries across the constituency. You can contact me via michael. tomlinson.mp@parliament.uk or call 01202 624216.

£5,000 boost for women’s mental health support by Lorraine Gibson The decline in the nation’s mental health is now a constant headline topic - not to mention political hot potato - in the aftermath of the Pandemic. Problems are spiralling, yet government funding has gone from falling to plummeting. Good news then, that thanks to a very welcome £5,000 grant from the Dorset Community Foundation, the Water Lily Project in Christchurch can now offer more mental health support to local women in crisis. The Christian charity, which helps vulnerable women return to independent living, reports a huge increase in demand for its services. Liz Carter, pictured, project manager, explains: “The impact of the Pandemic on well-being has been immense for so many in the community. “Cut-backs to mental health services
for many years have heightened the situation and we’re now really beginning to see the effects of this. She added: “We’re finding so many more local women seeking help for mental health issues. “It’s vital that we can offer the right support to help our beneficiaries and this grant will make all the difference.” The charity is planning a nine-month
programme that will target the reduction of stress, anxiety and the symptoms of depression. It will also be implementing ‘Happiness’ programmes to improve interpersonal skills, increase resilience, self-care, self-esteem and confidence and will be looking at the benefits of creative hobbies with a special art therapy course.

Life-changing small things Think of your perfect day for health and wellness. I’m imagining myself at a spa, lying by an infinity pool after a swim, having a massage and then eating a beautifully prepared, nutritious meal. It’s a nice daydream. How often does it happen though? Next, think of your average day. What are you doing now to look after your health and fitness? What does your day look like? How are you spending your time and moving between activities? If you have five minutes to yourself, what do you do? What is a priority? Perhaps you could come up with some ideas to put yourself and your health higher up your ‘to do list’ and think how to include these in an average day. Now think of your worst day. One where you’re stressed out, rushing around, things don’t
go to plan. You don’t have time to yourself to stop and think and you’re just trying to get through the day and keep your head above water. On days like this, the idea of prioritising your health and fitness, let alone relaxing by an infinity pool, is as far away as it’s ever going to get. Hopefully, most of your days aren’t like this. There are many things that influence our health and fitness and repeated habits and behaviours are an important part of this. How do we change our behaviour, particularly when life is busy and stressful? It might be nice daydreaming about your perfect day, but it’s more useful focusing on your worst! Don’t worry about trying to create habits that you might do on your perfect day; instead focus more on just one or
two things you might be able to consistently, even on your worst day. Then repeat those as often as possible until they become part of your average day. They need to be things you find fairly easy. Start really modest and aim for consistency. It might be something simple like; I’m going to drink a glass of water when I wake up; or I’m going to eat a piece of fruit as a snack; I’m going to make sure I take my medication; do one push up before I shower; take the stairs at work instead of the lift or make sure I go to bed at a reasonable time. You might think these are just common sense; but it isn’t always common practice. These single actions won’t seem huge, but done every day, even on your worst day, you’ll start to build a foundation layer of looking
Katrina Keeling is a Wimborne-based Personal Trainer. She coaches at WOW Ladies Fitness and independently.kkfitness.co.uk after yourself. There is always something we can do each day to look after our health and fitness, no matter how small. Focus on the practicality of that rather than the daydream of the perfect day. Eventually getting to your perfect day ‘spa’ will give you a good day; but doing one small thing every day will change your life.

Release those happy hormones! Over the last few weeks I’ve seen an increase in clients coming to see me for massage - not so much for the usual chronic pain issues but many more for stressrelated issues. The terms ‘self-care’ and ‘me time’ have become everyday phrases since we spent all that time in lockdown. It’s wonderful that so many people have taken a step back and looked at their lives in ways they would never have done before and perhaps adjusted their worklife balance or simply just made themselves more of a priority. However, as things open up and we start to get back to normality, I’m seeing people slipping back into old habits. A return to busy schedules is making stress levels rise again and for some, returning to the office environment is a
tough readjustment. According to the World Health Organisation, depression has risen by 25 per cent since the start of the Pandemic with women and young people the worst hit. It seems there’s a struggle to adjust to pre-Covid life again and that in itself can be stressful and bring back old
anxieties for some and new ones for others. Massage is a real benefit in helping to cope with stress and so much more than just a treat or a pamper. The benefit of touch and the benefit of sitting down and talking to someone that actually listens can really improve the way you feel, not to mention the benefit of just taking some time out to relax and be away from distractions. Massage helps release a bunch of happy, feel-good hormones - endorphins, oxytocin, serotonin, whilst also reducing the level of stress hormones – cortisol. During your consultation I take into account the whole picture of what’s going on for you. It’s called the biopsychosocial model and it means I take on board not only what is going on physically for you but also

Listen to what your heart tells you Are you feeling a bit stuck? Are you unsure of which way to turn or which path to take? Do you wish that someone would just tell you what to do to lead you to the right outcome? Wouldn’t it be good if there was a way to tell your current self what steps and paths to take, so that you knew that whatever you chose, was the right way forward? As a coach, I believe that you have all the answers within you, you just need to know where to look and how to find them. Here’s just one little way that you might like to use to find a way forward… Using your creative juices, conjure up an image of a peaceful setting, the air is warm, the silence deafening, the sun just going
down, you’re in a safe and beautiful place. Imagine a beautiful highly-polished antique rocking chair, with a comfortable soft cushion and a soothing rocking motion. Now imagine an older, wiser version of yourself. A self that has lived a full, abundant, healthy and happy life, having achieved everything you ever wanted and dreamed of, you are satisfied, content and at peace with yourself, supremely grateful for the good life which you have lived. Now picture yourself sat in the chair, using your toes to begin a gentle rock back and forth. As that older wiser self, reminisce and reflect back on your life. With the gorgeous gift of hindsight, you know instinctively the
things that were important, the things that were just trivial and insignificant. You know what decisions and actions you made that you are proud of and which ones you would choose differently if you had your time again. With that knowledge, that wisdom, that all knowing, and looking back to your current self, what do you need? What decision should you make? What path should you follow? What is your heart calling you to do? What would you advise your current self to do? How will you know that you’ve made the right choice? I wonder what came up for you. Perhaps nothing, for it goes without saying that not all techniques work for everyone.

However, with an open and quietened mind, away from the hustle and bustle of chatter in your head, allowing your imagination and creativity to run free, maybe, just maybe, you were able to see things from a different perspective, with the beauty of an imagined hindsight, and maybe you found some clarity and answers within you. So next time you are stuck or unsure, close your eyes, imagine the rocking chair and listen to what your heart tells you.

Health & Wellbeing By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com One of the first questions people ask me when booking in for hypnotherapy is: ‘How many sessions will I need?’ It’s a question I can never accurately answer. My aim with any new client is to help them get over their problems as soon as possible. I know that by the end of just one session most people are either feeling able to cope again, or are at least very much improved. Not just seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but knowing it is within reach. Sometimes I’ll return the question: “How many do YOU think?” This is not a trick question it’s amazing how this causes a person to automatically do a search within (known as a transderivational search) to
How many sessions?
provide them with an answer. It’s usually pretty accurate too, because our unconscious mind knows us better than anyone, and knows exactly what is needed for change. It gives me valuable clues as to how much work is likely to be required. Some fears or phobias, or habits such as smoking, may be possible to eradicate in one session, but something like prolonged anxiety might
require more. If the problem has been going on for a while it may have become complex. I always think of these sessions as being a little like an onion - you might peel back one layer to find something else lurking underneath. It’s my job to help a client peel back as many layers as is required to give them freedom. Another analogy I use is dominoes; sometimes all it takes is for the first domino to fall and set all the others toppling in super-fast time. Some people experience a real ‘a-ha!’ moment which changes everything in an instant; others may require more time for gradual and comfortable change at their speed. To me, it really doesn’t matter, because I am always clientled. I allow the client to guide me - they know instinctively when the work is complete.
And who am I to argue or set a time limit on when they will be sufficiently recovered? It’s for this reason that I never lock clients into lengthy programmes - I allow them to book on a session-by-session basis, or for something like weight management (which by necessity requires a period of time) I suggest a block of three or four sessions so we can track progress. Lots of clients book in for sessions at a later date - a kind of MOT or ‘mind maintenance’. This can be really beneficial - a bit like defragging your computer to help it run faster and more efficiently. I love this, as it shows their very real commitment to themselves and their emotional health. It also means I have the opportunity to build lasting and ongoing relationships with some incredibly inspiring people and that is always the best part of my job.

Taking healthy strides by Lorraine Gibson Feeling a bit sluggish? Walking has long been recognised for its health benefits and doing it in an outdoor setting is great for improving physical, as well as mental, wellbeing. Don’t let tomatoes be a blight in the garden After a brief hiatus, I return with this month’s Q and A. We are in full gardening mode now, but the weather has been super kind to us. Here are some answers to questions posed by you the readers. Please do email me if you have a question for me! I’ve just moved in to a new build, and my lawn is dying and patchy, what can I do? Oh no, the horror of builders’ remains! Chances are you have also inherited a 2in layer of topsoil and turf hastily laid over builders rubble and compacted earth. It’s a big problem in the industry. The best option would be to have a professional come and take a look. A consultation is likely to be anywhere between £30-£100+, depending on skills and services offered. The likelihood is that the
rubble and compacted earth has created a ‘pan’, where the roots cannot penetrate and water sits for too long above this layer. The most likely remedy is removing the turf, clearing the rubble to 20 inches’ depth and incorporating some organic matter or compost, then re-sowing. It really needs addressing at a political level to get decent standards in place so that developers don’t do this (note, not all developers are like this!) Which plants shouldn’t I plant with my cat around? There are a few plants which are poisonous to cats, and though they generally leave them alone it’s best to be safe. Lilies are particularly harmful, and all parts of the plant are toxic. Daffodils if ingested are also harmful. Beware also
some indoor plants, and cut flowers. Monstera (cheese plant), aloe vera, cycads and poinsettia are all harmful if ingested. If in doubt, check with your vet, and be aware of symptoms. The Cat’s Protection has some good reference guides at cats.org. uk/help-and-advice/home-andenvironment/dangerous-plants What’s the best variety of tomato to grow?
There are so many varieties of tomato available now that it can be quite confusing to know which ones to go for. But once you break it down it becomes much easier to choose. What type would you like – cherry, plum (great for making your own passata), beefsteak (for burger buns), or salad. If you have space you can get a selection to suit all needs. Next, are you

The sweet-scented stench of springtime success Scented sweet peas climbing the apple tree that was the vision or ‘smellyvision’! However, not all of the sweet peas I sowed germinated. My experiment with the self-made clay pot was a total failure as the clay just absorbed the water. Still, I have enough successes to transplant (oh so carefully) as they don’t like root disturbance. After the shock of being transplanted I try to water in a secondary way by putting a dry pot (this time of Purple

Later in the year when the Purple Honesty seeds I will use them with White Honesty for dried flower displays. This year I learned that apple leaves are good for acid reflux. Check with your Doc first and please don’t decimate orchards if you find this does work for you! Instead, grow you own in your

I always keep a patch for early spring pestos or tea (just make sure you blanch or preferably boil the stingers well). They are also useful to make a good feed for tomatoes and apple trees... just stew in water for a few days but not too long as it can get pretty stinky!

Cooking... Talking Italian …..Part 2 After our trip to Rome, and having had a brief holiday in Sorrento, (hotel and food not good, best bit being the trip up the coast, and the Limoncello tasting!), we decided to do a tour of Sicily. Martin gave me the places he wanted to go and booked the Air B&B, while I was responsible for planning the trip. This is where we decided that we had to start the Mount Etna diet, that I previously mentioned!! Sicily is very beautiful and easy to get around, we flew into one end, and came out of the other!! Our last stop was Palermo, and, like Rome they have catacombs! We expected something similar, but these were something else!! Rows upon rows of skeletons hung on the walls all dressed in clothes! They were split into sections so you had
with Martha Legg
babies, priests, professionals and virgins. All dressed. Apparently, it was considered a privilege and an honour to be buried there. Some families would even go in and change their relatives’ clothes! It was much more macabre than the ones in Rome, but fascinating. So back to the tiramisu. It reminds us so much of Sicily and the good food that we had, even if one restaurant we went to had the fire brigade and police outside! Think someone had burnt the pizza, so we
gave that one a miss! We had tiramisu in a small restaurant in one of the squares that are dotted around. It was supposed to be a romantic meal, but was slightly spoiled by an accordion player who stood close to the table playing the theme from The Godfather! Their tiramisu was fully of alcohol, and was less creamy, so I think mine is better!! I tend to leave the booze out, much to my sister’s disappointment when I served it as a dessert! It’s up to you.

Recipe
Asparagus and wild garlic buckwheat risotto The first of this year’s asparagus has hit the shelves, and to celebrate I’ve been making this light risotto with a little extra punch from wild garlic, which is growing prolifically in woodlands and hedgerows. When foraging for wild ingredients, you must be absolutely sure you are picking the right plant – if in doubt, don’t eat it. It is also important you follow responsible foraging guidelines, such as those at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk. Wild garlic contains good levels of vitamin C and beta-carotene, and a host of antioxidant phytochemicals. Asparagus is a great source
of folic acid, potassium, thiamine, and vitamins A, B6, C and K. It is also a good source of prebiotic fibres, which have been shown to feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut. I like to use buckwheat for this risotto – if you’ve not tried it before I encourage you to give it a go, but this recipe will also work with normal risotto rice. Serves 2 Ingredients 160g asparagus (trimmed) Small handful of wild garlic (washed and finely sliced) ½ white onion (diced) 1 garlic clove (finely grated) 130g buckwheat

1 tsp lemon zest 400ml hot vegetable stock 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Pinch of black pepper Optional extras: sliced spinach or spring greens, grated parmesan (or nutritional yeast) Method Heat a large frying pan on a medium heat. Fry the oil, garlic and onion for a couple of minutes, stirring often until softened. • Rinse the buckwheat and add to the pan, frying for a minute.
Add the stock and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. • Slice the asparagus into approximately 3cm chunks. Cut thicker stalks into shorter lengths so that they take the same amount of time to cook. • Add the asparagus and wild garlic to the pan. Stir through and simmer for a further 5 minutes until the asparagus and buckwheat are cooked. • Just before serving, add the lemon zest, black pepper, spinach, and parmesan, if you are using them.

BBQ sales banned
by Faith Eckersall A campaign against the sale of disposable barbecues which started in the New Forest two years ago has resulted in supermarkets Waitrose and Aldi deciding to nationally ban them in all their stores to reduce fire risk and cut down on waste. Aldi said its ban would remove 35 tons of singleuse waste packaging. It follows Co-Op’s move last June to remove disposable barbecues from sale in stores within a mile of national parks. The campaign started in May 2020 when Brockenhurst’s Streets Ironmongers pulled disposable barbecues from sale. They were soon supported by many independent stores, as well as national retailers
including Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Sainsburys and Tesco taking them off sale in and around the New Forest. Now the New Forest has been declared a complete no barbecue and fire zone and 50 shops and outlets have taken disposable barbecues off sale. And Dorset and BCP councils have also put in measures to control the use of disposable barbecues and have been asking local retailers to ban then from sale. Barbecues, camping stoves or anything with a naked flame are no longer permitted in car parks or any areas of the Forest managed by Forestry England, the National Trust, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Wellow Parish Council.

Model trains steam into town Model railways of all shapes and sizes are converging on Wimborne Model Town for the charity visitor attraction’s annual Railway Weekend between April 30 and May 2. A ride-on garden railway, providing visitors with a very different view of the vintage model buildings will run with the support of Wimborne & District Society of Model Engineers and hauled by Toby the Tram Engine. Making its public debut is the compact T gauge layout, Keren Cove, having been featured in Railway Modeller magazine. Built and exhibited by volunteer Becky Stares, the 3mm scale diorama, with a distinctly Purbeck feel, has a tiny 1/450 scale train which progresses through cuttings, across miniature bridges and a level crossing to reach it’s destination.
Model Town railway volunteers will be operating the developing Tramway system and organising extensive running on the attraction’s expanding 00 gauge layout including trains running underground and hot air balloon flights above the diorama. Standard admission charges apply and booking is not required.
Although it is not currently a legal requirement, please consider wearing a face covering to protect yourself and others when visiting the Tivoli.

Literary festival hosts the write stuff by Faith Eckersall Booklovers take note! Sturminster Literary Festival has announced its 2022 lineup and bookings for a series of talks by a feast of Dorset writers are now open. The popular event runs from June 6-18 and aims to showcase leading and emerging fiction authors with Dorset connections, as well as celebrate the town’s literary associations with Thomas Hardy, William Barnes and Robert Young. The first week features writing by some popular
contemporary Dorset authors including bestseller, Natasha Solomons, who will be at the Exchange discussing her innovative and beautifully written new novel, I, Mona Lisa. At a literary lunch, special guest Minette Walters will talk about The Swift and the Harrier, her historical novel on the horrors of the Civil War in Dorset. Gillingham-based Sally Page leads the literary tea, where she will talk about the writing of her best-selling debut novel, The Keeper Of Stories, which has had excellent reviews. Award-winning crime
LITERARY STARS: Minette Walters and, top from left, Sally Page, Rachel McLean and Natasha Solomons
author, Rachel McLean, will be discussing her popular Dorset crime series, six procedural crime novels set in various locations around the county, the first of which is The Corfe Castle Murders. Meanwhile, historical romance author Karen Dickson from Shaftesbury will discuss her recently published family saga, A Songbird In Wartime, which was shortlisted for a Romantic Novel Awards category this year. And, Via Zoom, Jim Case of Newfoundland, Canada, will talk about his genealogical connections with Dorset’s cod fishing and swanskin industries and how he came to write his historical novel, Ananias, which is based on his family history. During the second week events will focus on the town’s literary heritage, with Professor Angelique Richardson and Dr Steph Alder speaking about Hardy’s Correspondents, a collaborative project between Dorset Museum and the University of Exeter. In this fascinating presentation, guests will learn what the collection of letters tell us about Hardy’s many-sidedness, his relationships and his political activism. Former Yetties band member Bonny Sartin
will discuss Hardy’s musical heritage – the music he played, his instruments and the references to traditional song, music and dance in his writing. At a literary lunch, writer Christopher Nicholson will be speaking about the strange story of Hardy’s association with one of the rarest of all British birds, the creamcoloured courser. And in his talk, Sturminster stalwart David Fox will share insights into the town’s past and Blackmore Vale life as depicted in the poetry and writings of William Barnes and Robert Young. On Saturday, June 18, a Victorian-themed family fun afternoon will be held in Railway Gardens and Poet’s Corner area of the town. There will be free village games and circus skills activities, plus side shows and entertainments, including country dancing by Steps In Time and traditional Punch & Judy shows by the acclaimed Professor Gary Wilson. Two guided walks will highlight literary heritage in Bagber and Marnhull and there will also be reading discussion groups and two weekend events for children. More details are at sturlitfest. com/. Bookings can be made at eventbrite.co.uk/o/ sturminster-newton-literaryfestival-33209608299.

by Faith Eckersall Fancy becoming a piece of living art? Now’s your chance as the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has been chosen as one of 20 UK landscapes taking part in Green Space, Dark Skies, part of the Unboxed pan-UK festival of creativity. The Green Space Dark Skies project invites 20,000 people from all paths in life to make a journey into the landscape together. Participants will become ‘lumenators’, holders of specially-designed, lowimpact lights to create enormous patterns and images on the landscape at dusk. In Dorset, outdoor event
organiser Activate Performing Arts is inviting people to come together on Saturday, June 11, to create a unique film in the heart of the Dorset AONB, which stretches from Lyme Regis to Poole and up to Beaminster and Blandford. The project says lumenators will: “Experience wild and beautiful places as dusk falls with each mass gathering celebrating nature, our responsibility to protect it and everyone’s right to explore the countryside.” Because the exact locations will be kept secret until nearer the event, lumenators must register beforehand. Love letters straight from the art
by Lorraine Gibson When calligrapher Alan Mason was asked to create someone’s precious family tree, it became one of the largest commissions he’d undertaken. Having meticulously researched her ancestry, his customer wanted it to be beautiful enough to be framed and given as a gift. “She’d traced the generations back to 1274 to Robert De Bruce, a total of 25 generations,” says Alan. “The scale of the request took me aback but I agreed to give it my best effort. Plenty of planning and rough working was needed and any unusual spellings had to be confirmed.” Despite it being a demanding project, Alan, who got into calligraphy after becoming fascinated with the effect of
white writing on black paper, relished the task. “Many people in the lineage had grand titles such as Lord of Pittendriech, 4th Baron, Scottish Secretary of State, etc. It gave me a great sense of history working through this list of people spanning the centuries,” he says. “Spelling mistakes are the calligrapher’s nightmare. It
took seven weeks and I never made any.” The Southbourne pensmith and calligrapher of 50 years, used a dip pen and black Walker’s ink and red paint, a fine brush was used for other colours. He says good handwriting is not essential to be a good calligrapher, but lots of practice definitely is.
“One has to commit to a couple of hours per week and keep at it - don’t give up,” Alan advises. His attention to detail has paid off and he’s been widely commissioned throughout the county and beyond to design invitations, place names, books of remembrance and even love letters. Alan’s a member of the Copperplate Special Interest Group where practitioners send one another examples of their calligraphy in the form of addressed envelopes. This maintains standards as can be seen in the one above he made especially for our magazine. Does he have a favourite letter? Why ‘A’ for Alan, and artist, of course! amasoncalligrapher.co.uk email gothic1943@gmail.com.

It also features the Tempest Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky and Walton’s Henry V: A
Shakespeare Scenario. Conducted by Kirill Karabits, Tchaikovsky’s music for Shakespeare’s supernatural play The Tempest creates a visceral feeling of atmosphere — the gently undulating sea in the opening is seemingly calm, yet something eerie and foreboding lurks just beneath the surface. It is preceded by a work which has become an essential part of the British coronation ceremony; I Was Glad, by Bournemouth
native, Hubert Parry. Laurence Olivier’s Henry V marked a significant cultural moment when it was released in 1944, and Walton’s celebrated film score remains equally significant. The orchestra will perform Christopher Palmer’s hour-long arrangement, a ‘Shakespeare Scenario’ under the baton of Karabits. Tickets cost from £8 and are available by visiting bsolive.com/events/i-wasglad/.
Raise a glass with Wimborne Wine Society
The saying goes… ‘Life is too short to drink bad wine’ but if you don’t know your Bordeaux from your Beaujolais or your Chablis from your Chardonnay where do you start? How about the Wimborne Wine Society? The society meets the first Wednesday of each month. Members can enjoy a wine tasting and a presentation, often delivered by a visiting expert from local vineyards or wine shops. And don’t worry. The next meeting is on Wednesday, May 4, at 7.30pm with a presentation: ‘Toasting our Queen’, looking at wines with a royal connection in preparation for the forthcoming Platinum Jubilee. Oh chums! Having a ball with Paul by Hilary Porter They were last on a stage together in 2019 but nothing is going to prevent the on-the-spot and off-thecuff comedy antics of Paul Merton’s Impro Chums as they head for Dorset. The adlibbing troupe – comprising Mike McShane, Suki Webster, Richard Vranch, Kirsty Newton, and, of course, Paul Merton is back with another selection of games spurred on by those all-important audience suggestions. They spoke to us as they head to Lighthouse, Poole, on Tuesday, June14...
we do is about us having fun and being silly; It doesn’t lend itself to satire or indepth discussion on difficult subjects because you’ve got four or five minds on stage all weaving in and out. The depth of it is in the joy and connection with each other and the audience. And we’re all going to be so giddy with excitement at being back together that I
So, is it likely Covid will be mentioned during a game or will you avoid it like the plague? Paul Merton: My own view is that people would want to get away from it. Not every comedy show has to hold up a magnifying glass to society and be about how we live today. The whole idea of entertainment, for me, is to take you somewhere else, not to remind you of where you are. Suki Webster: I think the particular form of comedy
can’t see it being a focus.
What have you missed about the touring life? Richard Vranch: The thing I’ve missed is laughter. I’ve been watching a load of telly and there has been wonderful stuff produced by an arts industry that has been having a hard time. But I’ve really missed laughing with mates on the bus on the way to the gig and on stage during the gig. Mike McShane: The last tour was exemplary for us as a group; it felt like a Marx Brothers show in the best way possible. We now had music from Kirsty and it was all very nice. Getting on the bus, checking in on each other, hanging out, acting like idiots. And doing the show is fantastic and everything you hope for. Those 2019 shows marked Kirsty’s first Impro Chums tour of duty. What was your overriding memory of the experience? Kirsty Newton: I felt as though I’d been let into the coolest, ‘funnest’ club ever and
we had such a wonderful time. My over-riding sense of it is that it’s probably the best job in the world; just consistent fun and loveliness all the way. Without a script to learn, the notion of rehearsal is clearly very different for you as a group. But how do you get the comedy muscle moving before a show? PM: The most important thing is to be together beforehand. So we’ll throw a ball around to be in each other’s orbit and to just tune in to each other. KN: And we do a vocal warm-up to make sure the pipes are working and we don’t start off croaky. Finally, how important is the audience in making an Impro Chums show the best it can be? SW: We’ve really missed the connection with an audience. If you’re doing a play or stand-up there’s a bit of us and them, but with our show it’s about everybody, because their energy and their suggestions build it in a way that no other show can have. Everything is happening in the moment and what they’re doing is absolutely crucial. When it goes right that means everyone is involved and having a good time. It’s like a big party! www.lighthousepoole.co.uk
Have a pint of Sandi Boost for literary development by Faith Eckersall Popular broadcaster Sandi Toksvig will be sharing her reasons to be cheerful at Poole Lighthouse on Saturday, May 7, after long months of ‘coronacoaster’ gloom. Sandi’s first tour since 2019’s ‘National Trevor’ promises new discoveries, new adventures and new ideas, and you can expect fascinatingly funny facts, silly jokes and a quick-fire Q&A. Farming & Environment
A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming
Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. By the time you read this, Easter will have come and gone; I can’t quite believe we find ourselves in lateApril already. I love this time of year, with all the promise and expectation it holds, warmer days, and the return of familiar spring sounds: woodpeckers drilling and lambs calling. April at High Mead kicked-off with our monthly volunteers meeting; a chance for the various teams to catch up on all the farm’s dealings – the Animal Team to hear all that the Horticultural Team have been up to, the Shop Volunteers to learn more about the Animal Team and a
chance for us all to share the details of our forthcoming plans. Just like spring, this month’s meeting was bursting with positivity. I think the upbeat mood might have had something to do with the gathering being held in the White Hart public house… Paul and Cath, staunch supporters of the farm, put on a super spread for the team. There was lots of good news, the success of the farm’s first openday of the year, the return of our Co-Farmers to full capacity, Julie Richardson’s successful completion of the Bournemouth Bay Run within her target time of under 3 hours, raising a
stonking £1,600 along the way! The only ones that might have outrun Julie, were Domino and Skylar. Domino, our poorly pony, has officially returned to rude health. She and her stablemate Skylar have recently come back to the farm. The pair could be seen cavorting back and forth, clearly delighted to be home, if only for an afternoon. Work has started on the
replacement stables, lost to storm Arwen last year, so we are hopeful that all the ponies will be returned to their rightful paddock soon. News too, of plans for our farm shop which turns one in July. In addition to the fresh fruit and veg, the team is expanding the shop’s offering to include homeproduced pork, as well as bread, milk, and eventually, zero-waste pasta, pulses and much, much more!

Business
with dorsetbiznews.co.uk
The business which really delivers
Andrew Diprose is the founder and editor of dorsetbiznews.co.uk, the No.1 business website in the county with more than 25,000 unique users FUFILLED: James Bartlett
It’s arguably one of Dorset’s best-kept secrets. A business which, quite literally, delivers for its 200+ clients – and some of the most famous brands on the planet – 24/7, year round. Based in Christchurch but with warehouses in Germany, America’s East Coast and further ones to open on the West Coast later this year and – from 2023 – China and Australia. And at the cutting edge of the eCommerce revolution. I-Fulfilment has certainly come a long way since founder and managing director James Bartlett launched the business from a 6,000sq ft warehouse in Three Legged Cross nearly 20 years ago, with himself as the sole employee ‘rattling around like a bean in a can’. Now the company has 140 staff with annual sales of £12million. It’s on track for an annual turnover of £50million within three years. “Looking at the modelling we’ve done, we’re on target and I think that’s very achievable,” said James. As its name suggests, I-Fulfilment fulfils orders, both on behalf of its clients, ranging from sole traders through to multi-nationals, but also its own brands, The
Picture: DORSET BIZ NEWS
Greenfield Collection and Closer2Nature. Because long gone are the days of a trader having to own, or lease, premises to store their goods as well as employ staff to pick, pack and despatch. Instead I-Fulfilment is the equivalent of a warehouse, despatch manager and delivery driver rolled into one. Its own market-leading fulfilment and logistics software – Blade IMS – seamlessly integrates with all major eCommerce platforms. Designed and developed to control the whole fulfilment process, it handles everything from inventory management to controlling orders across multiple channels. The result is that clients – if they wish – can operate from just a laptop leaving I-Fulfilment to do the rest. But the business also offers much more. James, who graduated with a BA in Business Economics and worked for KPMG, said: “We really are a ‘one stop provider’ and an extension to the businesses of our clients. “Our services range from multi-lingual customer service teams working on behalf of clients through to back-office support, returns management, marketing and content and
product photography.” The move into fulfilment didn’t happen immediately. James had yearned to run his own business from childhood. His father, Malcolm, founded Kondor Ltd, the specialist provider of mobile and consumer electronics accessories, in 1994. It was sold to its management team 20 years later. James, 44, said: “I used to be paid £2 an hour to work at Kondor but most of that went on Macdonald’s. “But it gave me a taste for business at an early age.” After acquiring the warehouse in Three Legged Cross in 2002, James began selling house and garden products and artificial plants. He said: “It was very difficult to start with but we began listing our own products on Amazon in about 2003/4 and it began to evolve from there. But I had this big warehouse and I wasn’t using half of it. “I thought how can I generate some profit from this space? “We were obviously plugged into couriers, and other things. “It struck me that if we could get economies of scale by shipping other people’s stuff then I could get better prices on my own goods and utilise the same systems.” In 2005, work started on
building the software – the forerunner of Blade – and James, who had now been joined by a colleague, was on his way to creating the I-Fulfilment of today. Fairline Yachts and Specsavers were two of the first fulfilment clients. Fast forward to 2022 and the business now has 120,000sq ft of warehousing in Christchurch while its new SmartBase site on the Aviation Park at Bournemouth Airport – due to open in the next month or so – has 100,000sq ft more. Clients range from large blue chip companies to up-andcoming fast moving consumer goods brands across a number of categories. I-Fulfilment, which was named Best Global eCommerce Fulfilment Specialist at the Southern Enterprise Awards 2021, is now offering its Blade software to companies with their own fulfilment services. Solicitor Hugh retires after six decades
One of Dorset’s longest serving solicitors has retired after a distinguished legal career spanning six decades. Hugh Craig, right, stepped down after 57 years of service in the profession – including the last 11 years as a consultant solicitor in business services at Dorset law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors. He called it a day with the best wishes of colleagues from Ellis Jones’ six offices ringing in his ears. Nigel Smith, managing partner, said: “Hugh has been a tremendous credit to the legal profession over many decades. “It is unlikely that there are many solicitors with his depth of experience and expertise who have accomplished so much during their professional careers. “It has been a privilege for all at Ellis Jones to work alongside Hugh for the past 11 years and be able to draw upon his advice and guidance. “My sincere thanks go to Hugh on behalf of Ellis Jones for all he has
done for the firm and its clients. “He will be sorely missed and our very best wishes go to him for a long and enjoyable retirement.” Hugh consistently received independent endorsement of his expertise in The Legal 500 guide. He was named as a Recommended
Lawyer for Business Services in the 2022 edition where he was recognised for his work on equity investments and described as a ‘veteran transactional lawyer’. Hugh said: “I will be forever grateful for the opportunities and long career for which I have been given by the law and to Ellis Jones for enabling me to extend and finish my career in such a progressive firm with so many positive and friendly colleagues.” Hugh read law at the University of Cambridge’s Downing College and graduated in 1962. He joined a Liverpool firm, Laces, for his traineeship and qualified as a solicitor in 1965. Hugh moved to London in the mid60s, joining Coward Chance, now Clifford Chance, where he stayed until 1970 when he joined Bates Wells. Over the next 35 years Hugh worked as a corporate lawyer, senior partner and head of the company commercial department of Bates Wells until he retired as a partner and became a consultant solicitor with Ellis Jones.

Season opener shows promise for Wimborne
by Peter Impett Sundays opening Wessex Young Athletes meeting at Kings Park produced lots of top quality performances for junior club athletes. The under-13s did much of the points scoring. Finlay Carvell was in fine form winning the 100 in 13.6 and the A string 200 in 28.1. Paradoxically, his B string partner Harry Roscoe won his race in 28.00 dead. Lucas Joliffe, 4m24 and Elliott Trickey, 3m80 dominated the long jump and Rory Connolly won the javelin with 25m44. In the girls’ events Ava Elliott-Smith won the 100 metres in 14.00 and the long jump with 4m26. Lavender West won the 800
metres in 2.41.7. Olivia Jones had a busy day, winning the shot with 7m85 and was second in the hurdles with 12.70, where Esther Brooks won the B string 13.2. Alissa Irvine’s second-placed 1m20 in the high jump was one of many personal bests on the day. Things were quieter for the under-15s where Charlie Cleall won the 300 metres in 43.4 and a busy Lucy Lucas won her 100 metres in 13.30, the shot with 9m97 and was second in the 200 metres with 27.2. More athletes were active in
the under-17s where Harry Bunting won the 200 metres in 24.0 and was second in the 400 in 53.3. The Williams twins swept the board in the high jump with Jack 1m70 and Tom 1m60, both recording personal bests. Jake Roberts weighed in with a winning 11m14 shot and a 40m70 javelin. Wimborne’s under-11 girls were second in the Quadkids with Bethan Cassidy third and Mila Desborough fourth overall in a field of 50. Mila was second in the Vortex with 29.71, ahead of what is usually Bethan’s
strongest event where she recorded 27m71. Bethan compensated by winning the long jump with 3m49. For the boys, William Roscoe was best place in 15th position. Main match results: Winchester 536, 2) Bournemouth 401 3) Wimborne 326 4) Salisbury 234, 5) Poole AC 221, 6) Poole Runners 160 Quadkids Bournemouth 1599, 2) Winchester 1537, 3) Poole Runners 1504, 4) Wimborne 1432, 5) Poole AC 1314, 6) Salisbury 303

Ferndown to star on world cycle stage
by Faith Eckersall Ferndown has bagged itself a spot in the Tour of Britain cycling race which will finish its seventh stage in the town as the race comes to Dorset in September. Riders will begin the day in West Bay before riding for 112 miles along the West Dorset Heritage coast before passing through Dorchester, West Lulworth and Corfe Castle, then heading inland towards Wareham, Milton Abbas and Wimborne Minster. The noted climbs of Whiteway Hill, near East Lulworth, Bulbarrow Hill and Okeford Hill all feature along the route, which culminates on Ferndown’s Victoria Road.
The Dorset stage will take place on Saturday, September 10, giving spectators plenty of time to decide if they want to hold the kind of celebrations and parties which accompany the stages on the Tour de France. More than 100 riders will star in the Dorset stage, which could have an
estimated economic benefit to the area of £3.5million. Tour of Britain race director, Mick Bennett, said the eyes of the cycling world would be on Dorset. “I know that both the worldclass riders competing and the huge TV audience the Tour attracts will be blown away by the sheer beauty of the county,” he said.
“More than that, the challenging terrain will make for a thrilling day of racing, with the battle for the stage victory in Ferndown likely to be fierce!” Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for highways, travel and environment, Ray Bryan, said the Stage was a ‘brilliant opportunity to showcase what our county has to offer to the world’ and that the local authority wanted to maximise the benefits, for residents and spectators. This will be the first time Dorset has hosted the Tour of Britain; it has hosted its forerunner, known as the Milk Race, on several occasions during the 1970s and 1980s.
MSP Capital signs for football boot recycling scheme Property finance lender MSP Capital has joined the team behind a campaign to enable more disadvantaged football players in the community to take part in the sport. The principal partner and front-of-shirt sponsor of AFC Bournemouth is collaborating with the club and, for the first time, insurance company Vitality to launch Bring Your Boots. The aim is to encourage members of the public to donate pre-loved boots or trainers to families throughout Bournemouth who would struggle to pay for new ones. It comes after research revealed that nearly one in five families financially impacted by the Pandemic said they would struggle to send their children to grassroot clubs because of the cost of replacing
outgrown boots and other items of kit. Martin Higgins, left, managing director of MSP Capital, said: “Bring Your Boots is all about helping to provide vital opportunities for those children who are passionate about playing football but whose families can struggle to pay for kit. “Now is the time to dust down those trusty boots that
served you so well in the past and give them a new lease of life for someone else to enjoy.” The donations will directly help those who are unable to afford new trainers or boots in the local community through the club’s Community Sports Trust, which operates various projects designed to help both adults and children take part in physical activities. Members of the public can donate at two drop off points: the AFC Bournemouth Superstore at Vitality Stadium during normal store opening times; and in the Junior Fanzone on first team home match days. Vitality’s office in Bournemouth will also have a collection point to support the scheme and encourage donations.

A brief
In the 2021 budget announcement, the chancellor of the exchequer cut fuel duty - this is the tax you pay per-litre of petrol. The cut could reduce the cost of filling up your vehicle by a few pounds. But he raised VED again, charging more for highemission vehicles. This puts even more pressure on motorists’ wallets at a time when the cost of living is rising. So which vehicles will be affected by the VED tax rise? In short, the lower your emissions, the less tax you have to pay. So, if you buy a gas-guzzler you might expect to pay through the nose for it. An electric car should be cheaper, though. It's nothing short of confusing, so here's what you need to know:

High blood pressure in cats
Did you know that 11 human years is equivalent to 60 cat years? And just like people, high blood pressure is an increased risk as cats get older. A visit to the vet can check for manageable conditions like high blood pressure – the medical term being ‘hypertension’. The latest recommendations are that all cats aged seven or over should have their blood pressure checked at least once a year, even when they seem well. This is because there are often no obvious external signs of high blood pressure and it only reveals itself when damage to organs, such as the eyes, kidneys, heart and brain has already occurred. Therefore, regular screening by a vet is the best way to
spot high blood pressure early. Blood pressure screening doesn’t hurt and only takes a
few minutes and vets like to do this as part of your cat’s annual health check. Just like in people, an
inflatable cuff is placed around the tail or leg to take the measurement and most cats stay completely relaxed during the process. Hypertension can be managed with medication - the earlier it’s started the less chance high blood pressure has to cause harm. Facts Approximately 1 in 5 cats from nine years old are at risk of suffering from high blood pressure Conditions such as kidney disease or an overactive thyroid can also increase the risk of high blood pressure It’s therefore a good idea to ensure your cat is seen by your vet at least annually to ensure high blood pressure isn’t causing hidden problems at an early stage. vetsmiths.co.uk

Plan is ‘Development by stealth’ claim by Nicci Brown Conversion of agricultural buildings at Grange Farm, Colehill, to form nine houses have been approved by Dorset Council despite reservations expressed by members of the Eastern Planning committee in April. They were told that the application was for a site in the Green Belt and outside the settlement boundary, but was not isolated since there were adjacent dwellings to the south, and the use of existing buildings, with a minor extension to one, was acceptable since it was close to Furzehill with a public house and shop in the light of poor housing delivery figures. Ward member Councillor Robin Cook said his large rural ward, consisting of seven parishes, figured as one of the top 10 places to live, and Holt has seen an extraordinary number of planning applications. “It is safe to say an application for 50 properties would get thrown out, but
we’ve had at least that number as one, two or three. “It is development by stealth.” He said the Post Office and Stocks public house might be within short walking distance, but everyone would need motorised transport in the absence of public transport, which added to the carbon footprint, and because it was for only nine properties it did not provide affordable housing. “It replaces redundant buildings but farm buildings are what you expect to see in a rural location, and a bigger issue is the access, which at present is just for agricultural vehicles.” He was concerned a covenant might mean that the access could not be used for nine properties, which could result in an alternative access having to be used, and that it was not reasonable for residents to transport waste and food bins 100 metres down the road for collection. Councillor David Tooke asked whether
HANFORD Come to a Creative Workshop for girls aged 7-12 on Saturday 14th May 9.30am-1pm
the accumulation of development might mean further mitigation for heathland was needed, but was told that it did not meet the threshold. Councillor John Worth proposed approval, which was seconded by Councillor David Morgan and agreed by four votes to two. A further application for conversion of a redundant agricultural building into two four-bedroom dwellings at Bedborough Farm, Uddens Drive, Colehill, was approved on the casting vote of chairman Councillor Toni Coombs after a three to three split decision by other committee members. Councillors were told that an inspector at an earlier appeal had found the structural report about the building indicated it was suitably substantial for conversion, and that concerns about separating a right of way from a parking area could be addressed post permission by letting the applicant know of the committee’s concerns.
