UNSW Built Environment is the only faculty of its type in Australia with three Chairs in Architecture: the Seidler Chair in the Practice of Architecture, the Judith Neilson Chair in Architecture and the Anita Lawrence Chair in Higher Performance Architecture. The Seidler Chair aims to deliver excellence in design studio education and is held by Pritzker prize winner Professor Glenn Murcutt. The Judith Neilson Chair focuses on the delivery of better places for people of modest means or in posttraumatic circumstances and is held by Professor David Sanderson. The Anita Lawrence Chair focuses on emerging research regarding minimising the environmental footprint of buildings using cutting-edge design and is held by Professor Santamouris.

You will be eligible, after a recognised period working in a professional setting, to undertake the Professional Practice exam to become a registered Architect.

The Master of City Analytics (MCA) degree commences in 2018. As a graduate, you will have a well-grounded knowledge of city data, analytics, modeling and visualisation skills. Importantly, you will learn to apply such skills to support evidencebased decision making and innovative forms of citizen engagement.


From the Director “By 2020 there will be 50 billion devices connected to the internet using around 44 zetabytes of data. Much of this data can be harnessed to plan our cities better. With the global population predicted to reach 8.5 billion people by 2030 and 60% of those people forecast to live in cities, urban planners who can rapidly interpret this sort of digital information are already in high demand.”

What is planning? Planning is an exciting, varied and progressive profession which plays a pivotal role in decisions shaping the future of our cities and regions. The Master of City Planning degree will help you develop the skills and knowledge needed to play an influential role at the heart of contemporary challenges facing our natural and built environments. The MCP is also tailored for professionals working in other sectors, especially those whose work may intersect with the planning system, or requires involvement with planning agencies.

We work with stakeholders across the spectrum of interests shaping our cities and regions – from global developers to local communities – to foster feasible, equitable, sustainable and progressive outcomes.

Responsive to the needs of postgraduate learning The program has been structured to fit in with busy lives and work commitments. Students can commence the MCP in either semester 1 or 2 and complete the course either full or part time. Where possible, classes are scheduled in the late afternoon or evenings. A number of electives are offered in intensive mode. Be flexible The program is structured to offer you the option of eitherdeveloping your general planning knowledge or - through your elective options and selected focus of your planning project – pursuing specialisations in city renewal and development, city design, history or theory, and healthy, sustainable communities. In the final semester you’ll have the opportunity to conduct your own piece of research under the supervision of some of the country’s best researchers drawn from the planning program and Australia’s leading urban planning and housing research centre – City Futures – co-located within the faculty.

Pathways taken as part of the Master of City Planning may direct you towards more specialist areas, for example in housing, urban renewal, infrastructure, environmental management, heritage or urban design related professions. The Master of Construction Project Management (MCPM) will teach you modern management methodologies and principles of project management and apply them across the various phases of the construction project development life-cycle.

This degree will give you an advanced understanding of the construction project management body of knowledge, including established theories and recent developments relevant to the discipline and professional field. You will learn to apply construction project management principles and practices to new or complex environments. During your studies, you will plan and execute a researchbased or professional project, undertake a capstone experience or complete a piece of work that involves substantial scholarship, particularly in the construction project management context.

Master of Landscape Architecture At UNSW, the discipline of landscape architecture is considered a creative endeavour fundamental to meeting the environmental and social challenges of rapid urban growth. The program prepares students from diverse backgrounds to enter the profession of landscape architecture with the specialised knowledge and technical skills required for contemporary practice.

At UNSW, we approach landscape architecture as a human-centered design profession with an obligation to produce and sustain environmental and social benefits to cities and their regions. Across the curriculum, design research and theory provide the basis for innovation and exploration in the studios, and a range of digital technologies underpin the development and resolution of design projects.

As a student in the UNSW Master of Landscape Architecture program, you will engage with the Sydney region as your landscape laboratory. You will work with leading academics, practitioners and industry representatives in landscape architecture as well as city planning, urban design, and architecture to explore issues of common concern. Through studios and lectures you will engage with experts at UNSW Built Environment in social agency, design performance, city analytics, urban renewal and regeneration — along with healthy built environments, design theory and history.

The Master of Landscape Architecture is a 3-year program with 3 different entry points; depending on educational background students, may complete the degree requirements in 1, 2 or 3 years. Students are required to complete 144 UOC in total. Depending on their educational qualifications, students may be granted up to 96 UOC for recognition of prior learning (RPL).

Postgraduate Guide

Stream A is the 3 year program and caters to students from non-cognate backgrounds. These students complete the full 144 UOC program of study, comprising 18 core courses, including a 12 UOC capstone studio, and 5 elective courses from a list of prescribed courses. Stream B is a 2 year program and caters to students from cognate backgrounds including architecture and urban design. These students may receive 48 UOC for recognition of prior learning (RPL).

Stream C is the 1 year program and caters to students who have completed an accredited 4 year Bachelor of Landscape Architecture. These students may be eligible for up to 96 UOC of RPL. In 2018, the UNSW Master of Landscape Architecture welcomes applications for Stream B. Streams A and C will be available from 2019.

Master of Property and Development The Master of Property and Development program upskills professionals who are interested in a career in the investment, development and management of properties and infrastructure or in allied professions that serve this industry.

This degree provides you with an opportunity to understand the principles of property development and investment — applying them across different phases of the property development and investment cycle to achieve successful outcomes in terms of financial viability, risk management, and sustainability. It teaches you to communicate and collaborate with others who have different backgrounds and perspectives which is an important quality in property development and investment practices due to the interdisciplinary nature of the property industry.

This degree will enhance your knowledge and skills in applying the principles of sustainable development to the planning, design, construction and management of the 21st century city.

Education for sustainability is about empowering professionals to take on the challenge, it is transformative rather than merely transmissive, it is holistic and driven by critical thinking, and ultimately is about becoming a champion for change. The task begins with a focus on ‘triple bottom line’ sustainability and life cycle thinking as well as considering the differing value systems and cultures which influence the ways communities shape their built environments. The Master of Sustainable Built Environment provides the opportunity to explore these challenges in depth and adapt them to the needs of diverse professional and cultural settings. It is both academically interdisciplinary and linked to practical application in industry.

Career opportunities Graduates of this program pursue careers across a wide spectrum of positions in federal, state or local government agencies, as sustainability professionals in the built environment industry, in non-government organisations (NGOs) and as self-employed consultants. Why study the Master of Urban Development and Design? You will develop theoretical grounding, practical experience and expert skills in city-making as a creative field. The program combines design studios with advanced seminars, case study investigations and international workshops, connecting with fellow universities, city agencies and urban design professionals to deepen your understanding of the 21st century city.

MUDD integrates three fields of urban research: 1

Spatial political economy – the manifestation in urban form of global patterns of capital formation, invest- ment and disinvestment

2 Urban design principles and paradigms – normative models of‘good city form’ grounded in aesthetic, social and environmental concerns. 3

Urban design as public policy – the intersection of public policy, design principles, urban governance and the deal-making of the property sector in defense of the public realm.

Work on global urban design issues You will gain a global perspective on urban design through the MUDD international design studio – a core requirement of the degree. In a two to three week workshop setting, you will collaborate with universities and/or planning agencies overseas on a critical urban project. MUDD has conducted 46 international studios over the past 22 years – in cities which include Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Hanoi, Djakarta, Delhi, Mumbai, Tokyo, Nagoya, Portland, New York, Chicago, Venice, Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Budapest, Berlin, Hamburg, Buenos Aires, Valparaíso and Cape Town.

You will engage with Sydney as part of the MUDD program’s commitment to understanding our city as a continuing case study in urban development. Through advanced studios on issues such as waterfront development, urban infrastructure, urban consolidation, urban centres, urban conservation and neighbourhood design, the relative degree of transparency in the making of the Australian city provides deep grounding in urban development processes.

Pathway to extension program The three-semester MUDD program is also a pathway to a research-based fourth semester in the MUDD (Extension) program. This provides the opportunity to undertake a Graduate Research Project on a critical issue of urban design as preparation for practice in a specialist area and/or higher studies at Masters by Research or Ph.D levels.

Career opportunities On completion of the MUDD degree you can work in urban design consultancies, city agencies, the development industry or head your own professional practice in urban design. You can also proceed to doctoral studies at a major international university and a career in academia. Admission Requirements There are proposed changes to the admission requirements for the three-semester MUDD Program (8131) and the foursemester MUDD (Extension) Program (8141) which may include the submission of a portfolio, and in the case of 8141 also a statement of interest in undertaking an urban design research project. The Master of Urban Policy and Strategy is designed to create leaders in the urban transformations of our cities. This program is unique in Australia.

The degree is for industry professionals wishing to develop advanced skills in urban management and policy. It is particularly suited to professionals from State and Commonwealth governments and the private sector wanting to upskill their policy capabilities. The program offers an exciting mix of theory and practice with guest speakers every day from politics, bureaucracy and industry. The program aims to cover the following elements: – – –

Deepen your experience through problem-based learning The program will utilise a number of different teaching strategies which will extend and deepen the learning experience. These include studio, master classes, problem-based learning, case studies and field trips as well as consulting projects with client, and evidence-based research. This Master’s degree blends theory and practice and invites senior guests from industry to share their insights almost every day of the course.

You will gain an understanding of the history of city development; strategic urban policy challenges; decision making and governance; public and private development finance and data analysis; strategic planning and impact assessment tools; smart cities, advanced research methods and urban leadership, politics and ethics.

Class sizes in the program are deliberately small to allow you to engage in highly interactive classes with other students, researchers, professionals, adjunct professors and teachers. This will enable you to engage and learn on a deeper level through key topics and case studies.

Locations of the projects will vary from year to year, however projects are typically large-scale urban interventions that are complex by nature.
