Many of today’s graduates are embarking on careers that did not exist ten years ago. When you graduate, I want you to confidently adapt to future careers by having taken advantage of opportunities that complemented your education.

Today, you can begin building those opportunities with UNSW Business Society, the largest society on campus. They created this valuable guide as a tool to cover every aspect of your career decisions, including the practical skills you need, from networking to finding the ideal internship. In addition to this guide you have the support of so many other UNSW and Business School resources. Make use of these and you’ll find opportunities for networking and career events to personal support from on-campus careers advisors and the invaluable experience that comes from developing your skills through our student clubs. UNSW Business School, one of the leading business schools in the Asia-Pacific, has a vision for 2025 in which our students benefit greatly from a career-focused learning experience. ATTIRE & APPEARANCE GUIDE:
DRESS TO IMPRESS
NETWORK WITH A PURPOSE It is important to network with purpose! Having a goal will help you stay focused and not aimlessly wander around. Goals could include improving your confidence, meeting a new friend, or most importantly, getting yourself out there and speak to sponsors! Think of topics you would like to discuss and have a few questions ready to ask. The best questions are the ones that can’t be answered by just a “yes” or “no”, such as: • ‘’How do you like working for your company?’’ • ‘’What’s the primary role at your company?’’ • ‘’How did you get involved in your field?’’ For first year students, this a great chance to discover the various career opportunities available to you. It is also a fantastic opportunity to learn more about firms within the business industry, and lead you towards a career pathway you may wish to take. For penultimate or final year students, this networking event is a great opportunity to make new connections. It is important to build new connections or ask questions about potential internships or graduate opportunities that each firm may offer.
ACTIVELY LISTEN Networking is about both receiving and giving information. Listening to the people around you builds trust because it actively shows an interest in someone’s opinions and thoughts, allowing you to foster a valued relationship. A good listener actively pays attention to the conversation and responds appropriately with questions, maintaining good eye-contact and using body language and gestures to convey their attention.
RESEARCH - BE INFORMED When it comes to networking events, it is key to provide a good impression. By researching the firm, you may pick up on important information that will allow you to better in engage in conversation.

FOLLOW UP WITH NEW CONTACTS
It is always a good idea to follow up with individuals you meet at any event. You could send them an email or LinkedIn message telling them you enjoyed meeting them, and make reference to a topic you discussed or an interested you shared, if appropriate. Finally, remember to try and build a valued business relationship by speaking to everyone at the event, as communication is key!
When it comes to networking, always be mindful of the image you project as well as the power of a sharp suit, shirt or blouse. Similarly, every company and even teams within a company will have their own expectations and culture when it comes to dress code. It is important that you are comfortable in your outfit and everything fits to show your best side. There is nothing worse than fidgeting with your attire or accessories when you are in a professional environment - ensure you’re dressed to impress!

Most firms do have the tradition of having smart casual Fridays. For Women: • Business separates, rather than a full suit – a skirt worn with a cardigan or jacket, for example. • Coloured shirts and blouses, rather than manda- tory collared button-downs. Choose solid colors, or muted patterns like stripes or checks, and avoid low-cut shirts or bright patterns. • Shoes may be comfortable flats and loafers, as well as pumps, but should remain closed-toe. Can be any color, although black, brown, red, navy, and gray are among the most appropriate. For Men: • Wear coloured, collared button-ups, preferably in white, blue or pink. Conservative patterns such as checks or stripes are acceptable too, worn with or without a tie. • Ties should still be traditional in pattern. Avoid novelty ties, and choose patterns like dots, stripes, or checks. Most colors are acceptable. • Pullovers and sweaters worn over collared shirt. Choose solid, striped, or another conservatively patterned sweater. • Shoes can be oxfords, loafers, or another comfortable yet dressy choice, in brown or black. Avoid sneakers.
For Women: • A well-cut pantsuit or skirt suit in a conservative neutral color, such as black, navy, or brown. • White button-ups with a collar or conservative blouse • Closed-toe heels in a neutral color such as taupe, black, grey, or brown. • Neat and simple hair, makeup and jewelry • Skirts never more than two finger-widths above the knees. For Men: • A tailored suit in a solid, neutral color like black, gray, or navy. • Ties and other accessories should be both modest in color and style – solid, brighter colors or patterned muted neutrals. No novelty ties, such as sports team patterns. • White, collared button-up shirts. • Appropriate accessories such as a black belt, watch or cufflinks are also valuable additions.

THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Every step towards the future comes an inevitable ambivalence. But the hike through the recruitment process should be one where you are knowledgeable of the terrain, well equipped with the right materials, and most importantly, driven by a motivated and perceptive mindset.
ONLINE APPLICATION The online application usually includes the CV and Cover Letter, as well as a series of questions for you to answer. CURRICULUM VITAE (CV): An effective CV is one that is relevant and specific to the job. When preparing your CV, make sure you research and understand the position (how you match the requirements) and showcase your achievements (why you are a strong candidate). TOP TIPS: • Be succinct - use no more than 2 A4 pages • Use assertive and positive language • Ask someone else to read over your CV • SAMPLE CV STRUCTURE: • Heading • Personal Profile • Experience • Achievements • Career History • Personal Details • Education and Qualifications
COVER LETTER: A strong cover letter is an employer’s segue into understanding your suitability for a role as well as your cultural fit. Your cover letter should display: • Your motivation to work for the particular firm and division • Your capability for the role shown through your skills and experience • Your cultural fit for the organisation through an understanding of its values COMMON PITFALLS: • Spelling and grammatical errors • Poor balance between claiming responsibility and identifying achievement • Excessive personal information (such as race, religion, marital status and nationality) • Convoluted formatting
APTITUDE, PERSONALITY AND PSYCHOMETRIC TESTING There are three main aptitude and psychometric tests: NUMERICAL - measures your ability to interpret, analyse and draw logical conclusions from numerical information in graphs and tables VERBAL - measures your ability to use the English language, understand verbal information and convey information to others in a clear and logical manner LOGICAL - measures your ability to draw logical conclusions based on statements or arguments and to identify relevant strengths and weaknesses of those arguments

PERSONALITY TESTS: Personality tests are designed to assess how you operate and are becoming increasingly prevalent as part of the hiring process. They are designed to measure your behavioural style, opinions and motivators. If you wish to get some practice or get an idea of what the tests are like, hop on to https://www.cebglobal. com/shldirect/en/practice-tests/ AVAILABLE RESOURCES: UNSW Library has books that contain practice psychometric tests. UNSW Careers and Employment also holds regular psychometric testing workshops which give some guidance on how to go about answering questions.
PHONE/VIDEO INTERVIEW PHONE INTERVIEW: Generally conducted by the HR team, phone interviews can be both scheduled and unscheduled. The questions asked may vary from behavioural and motivational to questions about the relevant industry.
VIDEO INTERVIEW: An OAI is a video interview completed at a time and date of your own choosing. Using a webcam or a device with a front-facing camera, you will be required to answer questions set by the interviewer.
Potential questions include: • Why do you want this role and what differentiates you from other candidates? • What is your greatest achievement? • What are your greatest weaknesses? • What is the most important thing you look for in a job/company?
Top Tips: • Have a pen and paper ready for note taking • Prepare a quiet place where you can take a call • If you are called at an inconvenient time, ask if you can talk at another time and suggest alternatives.
INTERVIEWS When answering situation based questions remember to use the STAR technique.
Situation: provide context Task: what was required of you Action: what you actually did Result: how the situation turned out (remember to quantify any successes where possible)
BEHAVIOURAL QUESTIONS: Interviewers will have a set list of skills and competencies which they will ask you to demonstrate by presenting a situation where you behaved in a specific way. The best approach is to prepare beforehand for these questions. Write out a list of skills you think the employer would need i.e. in a customer service job they would be looking for teamwork and communication skills, and prepare situations in which you demonstrated these skills.
SITUATIONAL QUESTIONS: Situational questions are used to demonstrate how you would handle a hypothetical situation. TIPS: • Think about the question carefully before responding - don’t be afraid to ask the inter- viewer to repeat the question or ask for a minute to think about it • Break down the situation in your head and apply a step by step, logical process for your solution • Practice, practice, practice - it is difficult to guess the situational questions that will be asked so the best approach is to practice responding under pressure to a broad range of questions Competency Interview Competency interviews are used to evaluate a candidate’s key competencies, especially where it is difficult to select based on technical merit. Questions may delve into a particular skill or competency or knowledge of the firm and the industry as opposed to questions about industry experience. Partner Interview An interview run by a partner of the respective firm. Generally these interviews are used to assess a candidate’s personality fit for a firm.
Examples of common behavioural questions: • Tell me about a time when you demonstrated good leadership • Tell me about a time when a project you were in charge of fell behind schedule. What did you do about it?

ASSESSMENT CENTRE Assessment centres are a collection of tests and exercises designed to emulate a firm’s business environment. They aim to generate objective information about candidates in regards to attributes such as problem solving, team work and also fit within an organisation’s structure and culture. During each activity, a group of trained observers will rate individual candidates on a range of competencies using a prescribed performance scale. An assessment centre generally runs from ½ to 2 days.

Don’t just do it - show the assessors you’re doing it (remember to contribute to discussions but avoid being domineering) If any group presentation is involved, spend the last 5 minutes of planning time to allocate talking points Know your assessment criteria Relax and be yourself
INDIVIDUAL ASSESSMENTS IN TRAY/ WRITTEN EXERCISE: Assesses: Ability to organise and prioritise work, analytical skills, communication with team members, written communication and delegation. This simulation exercise is designed for a candidate to emulate the role of an employee. The candidate will be asked to solve problems and make decisions based on a number of letters and memos.
CASE STUDIES: Assesses: Ability to analyse complex data and issues, seek solutions, project plan, find solutions and general commercial awareness. In case studies, candidates are generally provided with information about a work-related scenario. The task may involve examining the information before presenting the findings and solutions.
VERIFICATION TEST: You will simply be asked to retake one of the online tests you did in the earlier stage of the recruitment process to ensure that you did not cheat. The test calculates the similarity rate of your results, as opposed to how well you do.
Example: The scenario: A publisher of scientific journals and books is looking to make a significant acquisition. It has identified a target company and approached a number of investment banks for their views on the merits of a potential deal and a target price. Based on these presentations, the publisher will decide whether to proceed with a bid and, if so, select one bank to act as their adviser. The task: Your team is one of the investment banks bidding to win the mandate. You need to analyse the figures provided; to review the marketplace, your potential client (the publisher) and the target company; and to prepare a five-minute presentation giving your recommendations, e.g. whether to go ahead, go ahead under specific conditions, etc.

FURTHER INTERVIEWS / NETWORKING SESSIONS For more competitive industries there can be up to 8 rounds of interviews. A lot of companies are now incorporating networking sessions into their recruitment process to see how students interact with other students and professionals.

GROUP ASSESSMENT GROUP ACTIVITY: Assesses: Leadership, teamwork, negotiation and problem solving. Group activities involve candidates working together to resolve a presented issue. This generally involves formulating a strategy based on given information and analysing its merits and weaknesses. Example: Tower Building Exercise A group may be asked to design and build a tower in accordance with a construction brief which may stipulate minimum height, time period the completed tower must stand unsupported, time limit and budget.

If you’re not comfortable with talking to industry professionals (especially those in very senior positions), it helps to go to networking events held by firms to get in some practice and become accustomed to networking etiquette.

Apart from the compulsory courses, there are elective courses to choose from. Students choose 3 courses to complete, with at least 2 of them being at Level 3 (i.e. ACCT3XXX)
PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION CPA CPA Australia has accepted specific UNSW undergraduate courses for the purpose of its membership qualifications. Associate membership of CPA Australia requires the minimum qualification of an accredited undergraduate degree with a major in accounting, and completion of accredited courses in accounting, finance and business areas to satisfy the minimum core knowledge requirements. Chartered Accountants ANZ For Business School students you must satisfy the following requirements, which combine academic study, approved employment and three years of mentored practical experience. • To meet the academic requirements of the CA Program you must hold an accredited bachelor or master’s degree that covers all required competency areas. • You must also be employed in a relevant accounting role with an Approved or Recognised training employer for 17.5 hours or more per week, and under the guidance of a recognised mentor for 3 years. • More information on the CA Program entry requirements and alternate pathways can be found here: www.charteredaccountantsanz.com/become-a-member/entry-requirements/chartered-accountant
POTENTIAL CAREER PATHS Public accountants work in partnerships which facilitate accounting services externally to individuals, corporations, various tiers of governments and sometimes non-for-profit organisations (NGOs). Much of the services performed by public accountants are externally orientated and client focused, with public accountants typically using historical data and tackling financial problems in retrospect.
Government accountants, who are employed by the public sector, engage in professional accounting. At the same time, as an auditor of the private sector on behalf of the government, governmental accountants also undertake auditing of private businesses or individuals whose activities are subjected to government regulations.
Management accountants, whose services are often embedded internally within, are responsible for advising management in terms of financial decision-making, resource allocation and the sustainability of a corporation. As opposed to public accountants, management accountants primarily scrutinise past and current financial data in order to plan for the future.
Internal auditing accountants, as the name implies, carry the sole responsibility of providing assessments to internal financial records of the firm whom they have been employed. It is crucial to be reminded that this field of accounting is distinguished from management accounting as internal audit accountants facilitate monitoring and evaluating roles as opposed to the direct engineering of financial statements.

What is Finance? Finance is the science of managing money in international and domestic financial markets. It is concerned with making investment decisions, valuing financial assets, managing funds and developing strategies to minimise financial risk.

PERSONAL FINANCE
Personal finance involves individual financing such as paying for education, financing durable goods such as real estate and cars. It also includes buying insurance (e.g health and property insurance), investing and saving for retirement.
CORPORATE FINANCE
Corporate finance deals with the sources of funding and the capital structure of corporations and actions that managers take to increase the value of the firm to shareholders. This also involves tools and analysis used to allocate financial resources.
PUBLIC FINANCE
As for public finance, in addition to managing money for its day-to-day operations, a government body also must satisfy its larger social responsibilities. Its goals include attaining an equitable distribution of income for its citizens and enacting policies that leaad to a stable economy. Financial Services is one of the most competitive fields in Commerce (especially Investment Banking).

What is Economics? Economics is a diverse and fascinating discipline which analyses decision-making by individuals, business, government and global organisations. It deals with important issues, such as: the behaviour of individuals and firms and their strategic interactions, economic growth and development, the causes and effects of unemployment and inflation, income distribution, public policy design and implementation, and the means to improve overall efficiency and living standards.

Business Strategy and Economic Management Business Strategy and Economic Management deals with strategic behaviour among firms and provides tools for effective business decision-making.
The following majors can only be obtained by Bachelor of Economics (BEco) students: • Econometrics Econometrics focuses on the development and application of quantitative methods to model everything from individual consumer behaviour through to the collective workings of the economy.

What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role? I am currently a strategy associate at Woolworths. This involves working on projects that contribute to the overall strategy of the supermarkets business. Most recently I have been part of the project team delivering the roll out of reverse vending machines across our stores for the NSW container deposit scheme. Can you tell us a little about CA’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? Woolworths has a very inclusive work culture which encourages and celebrates diversity. Retail is a team game and working collaboratively across different functions is crucial to our success. We have recently transitioned from allocated desks to a flexible working environment to further improve collaboration between teams. One of the things that I am particularly proud of is the strong community focus. Woolworths supports many local and national charities which often means fundraising morning teas or mufti days at the office!
How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? I completed a Bachelor of Commerce with majors in accounting and finance at university. I was keen to get experience early on, actively seeking out vacation work, including an internship at EY in my penultimate year. Upon completion of my studies, I secured a graduate position at Woolworths. As a graduate I was able to experience both commercial and corporate finance roles as well as a secondment in the strategy team. My studies at university helped me to grasp the technical aspects of my role, however it is the soft skills I developed through my involvement with clubs and societies on campus that have been most valuable. Do you have any advice for someone applying for CA? Or more specifically, the field you’re involved in? Be prepared to work and study hard. It can be extremely difficult to balance work and study at times, but it is always worth it. The CA designation is well regarded globally and is one of the best ways to fast track your career progression. What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work? Retail is a fast paced industry. This means I am often working on projects with short timeframes and tight deadlines. Although challenging, I love the fast pace as it keeps the work interesting.

We sat down with Rebecca to find out how becoming a CA has helped her to become a difference maker. What is a ‘typical’ day for you? On a typical day, I have a range of conversations and decisions I need to make with regards to primarily the financial management of the organisation. One of the key things that I pay a lot of attention to is understanding what it is that our supporters are interested in funding. What it is that from a field side they have needs in, and understanding how to match those resources that are coming from those donors to those needs in the field. As the chief financial officer, it is imperative for me to be able to say hand on heart that we have done the best we can to make sure our resources are deployed to their maximum effect. What do you enjoy most about your role? What actually brings me a great sense of contentment is the idea that I am using my life as best I can, with the skills that I have, trying to help others. I feel like, in the role that I do now, I am actually using those skills to benefit as many people as possible, and in many corners of the globe. There is something inherently rewarding about knowing that the decisions you make, or the analysis that you’re doing, the report that you’re building, whatever that is, is ultimately to serve others. What advice would you give to students interested in a career in the not-for-profit sector? Get out there and volunteer. It’ll give you a taste of what the sector is actually like. It’s incredibly diverse, and it is very different from the for profit sector, it’s motivated by very different things. The decisions that the organisation makes are based on different criteria. And as an organisation that is there to help other people, I want to employ people who find that intrinsically rewarding. Because to me, this isn’t just any other job. This is a job that other people are depending on us to do our job well. So I’m interested in hiring people who demonstrate that they are interested in helping others too. How do you think becoming a Chartered Accountant has helped your career? I think being a Chartered Accountant has been the key stepping stone in my career. I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to work at the calibre of organisations that I have. I certainly wouldn’t be able to take on this role as Chief Financial Officer at World Vision Australia without having that particular designation. What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role? I work in the Business and Private Client Advisory (BPCA) division and my duties can be wide and varied. BPCA offers a variety of services to a diverse industry and client base, including but not limited to high net worth individuals, family groups, private and public entities. The team I’m in focuses on the automotive industry and my work is made up of a mix of compliance (preparation of financial statements and tax returns), ad hoc consulting work (tax reviews and performance reporting) and reviewing junior staff’s work. Can you tell us a little about ShineWing Australia’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? ShineWing Australia has a supportive work environment with an open and social culture. When you start as a grad, you are assigned a buddy who is there to help you find your feet and make your transition from uni to work as easy as possible. Within my division we work in teams of 8-10 people, and they end up being like your work family who make you look forward to coming to the office each day. There are lots of great opportunities to meet people across all divisions of the firm both socially and professionally. There are regular team building events, end of month drinks, an annual ball, social club events and we also participate in various CA sporting tournaments and social netball throughout the year.
When I finished high school I didn’t have much of an idea about what kind of career I wanted to pursue but I did know that I wanted to go to uni. Straight out of high school I worked as an administration assistant for 12 months at a local accounting firm so I wasn’t just jumping into something at uni that I wasn’t certain about. Working in that environment made me realise that business was an interest of mine, so I went on to study commerce, majoring in accounting. While my uni degree taught me a lot about research and the fundamentals of accounting and business, you really do the most learning on the job. I was lucky to gain part-time employment at another accounting firm while studying, which gave me invaluable experience to complement my studies. Do you have any advice for someone applying for ShineWing Australia? Or more specifically, the field you’re involved in? For anyone applying for ShineWing Australia I’d say to make sure you share a bit of your personality or other interests besides accounting in your application and interviews. While it’s very impressive if someone has well developed technical skills, these can always be taught on the job. People skills are just as important you need to show that you can build relationships with colleagues and clients, and will work well with a team. That’s something that is a lot harder to learn!

I am a consultant in the Sydney office. In my first year I have worked across healthcare and financial services and retail. My duties are highly variable because the types of work we do varies drastically by client and project. At Oliver Wyman there is a great opportunity for juniors to develop quantitative/programming, strategic, operational, business and people skills. Can you tell us a little about Oliver Wyman’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? We have a relatively small presence in Australia but are very large internationally. This is great because our small local size means we are growing very fast and get great exposure to senior clients and colleagues. I work directly for partners on a regular basis. At the same time we have the infrastructure and support of a multinational consulting firm. It’s the best of both worlds. Being small also means you can have close relationships with everyone in the office which is great in consulting because you’re out of office a lot.
You can get into management consulting from almost any background. I did a technical degree and many of my peers where nervous about entering management consulting because they thought they would have no opportunity to utilize their technical skills. At OW this is not true. OW can give you opportunity to develop soft and hard skills. For example we do a surprising number of machine learning projects and have worked with the AI labs of some of the largest tech companies in Asia. Do you have any advice for someone applying for Oliver Wyman? Or more specifically, the field you’re involved in? I would say doing some preparation for the case interview can go a long way. It’s a lot harder to do well if you are unfamiliar with the format and have never seen anything like it before. What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work? The variety and complexity of the problems we try solve is both challenging and interesting!

I head up Willis Towers Watson’s global sustainable investment capability as part of the Investments business. My focus is to advise the growing number of asset owners around the world wanting to invest more sustainably. Sustainable investing encompasses long-term, finance-driven strategies that integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors and stewardship in investment arrangements. Increasingly investors are recognising the investment implications of changing demographic and consumption patterns, natural resource scarcity and climate change. I’m responsible for supporting the investment and manager research team globally, which has more than 100 members, to integrate sustainability factors into our research process across various asset classes. Part of my role is also to participate in collaborative initiatives that address shortcomings in the investment industry and improve long-term
outcomes for investors. An example is promoting and enabling investor stewardship and seeking to protect investors’ long-term interests through constructive engagement.

As the Marketing Manager of the Baking portfolio at Nestlé, I am responsible for the development and implementation of the strategic marketing plans for the NESTLÉ BAKERS’ CHOICE and NESTLÉ PLAISTOWE brands. The purpose of my role is to ensure that these brands continue to be loved by consumers both now and in the future. Key activities include setting the strategic direction for the brands, creating marketing communication campaigns and developing innovation pipelines to inform new product development. What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role? My name is Paul and I am the Marketing Director for the Homecare team across Australia and New Zealand. I’m lucky to have a lot of great responsibilities, but some of the highlights include leading brand activations such as the Omo ‘Dirt is Good’ campaign which saw a quarter of Australian Primary School kids learning through nature play, as well as working with Domestos Unicef; a partnership which has given 500,000 people access to clean safe toilets. Something I am personally proud of is the chance to represent Unilever on the Board of Sustainable Business Australia, which allows me to influence how business can have a positive impact on society. Can you tell us a little about Unilever’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

If I look deeply, my whole career has come from a love of building Lego and understanding how things are put together and how to build them up differently. After studying Engineering & Business at University, I transitioned to Marketing and building up brands and businesses instead.
Prior to starting at Unilever, I had completed some work experience in the industry, and came to realise that Unilever offered a great combination of brands with purpose and opportunity to lead businesses versus just one element of the marketing mix. Do you have any advice for someone applying for Unilever? Or more specifically, the field you’re involved in? The advice I would give to someone looking to apply for Unilever or any marketing career would be to: 1. Realise it’s impossible to understand simply from a university course what you’re going to love. Nothing beats hands on work experience to help you discover what gets you excited to start the day. 2. Remember that this is only the first bet you’re placing on your career, not your last, so take the opportunities that come your way. 3. Think about what you’re passionate about, and how you can turn this into something you do every day. 4. Finally, never fear failure, it’s better to try things different and invest in your learning than to not give something a go. What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work? Through my 10 years at Unilever, something I’ve found both challenging and interesting is gaining understanding of how teams work. My transition from the Graduate Program to becoming a Marketing Director has taught me that the best work comes from seeing how a team performs (win or lose) and realising you often can’t do something alone. One of the biggest challenges I found in my early days of work was not realising that it’s okay to fail – nothing breaks. When you first start work you can sometimes try to be too professional and worry about getting it wrong, or letting people down. The real challenge was resetting my frame of mind to recognise that people wanted me to try new things, approach things differently and that if I did, I would be more likely to leave a lasting impact and inspire others to do the same.

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? I applied for the markets sales graduate program, which gives you the opportunity to rotate and includes seven weeks of training in New York. This program was great because I wasn’t sure what area of the firm I wanted to work in and it gave me a chance to try lots of different teams. That ended up being beneficial since the team I joined wasn’t anything like what I imagined I would do at the start of the year.

What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role? I trade fixed income products such as bonds and currency for clients including banks, asset managers and hedge funds. Being tied to market hours is great because every day starts and ends at a reasonable time (so no late hours or weekends!) but every day is different and interesting. Can you tell us a little about JP Morgan’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? My favorite part of working for the Sydney office is I feel like I have the benefits of a global firm with the culture of a local one. My team is really fun to work with; they are a great mix of hard working while still being pretty laid back.
Don’t underestimate the benefits of working for a large global company like J.P. Morgan. I never thought about the potential to work in another country or have global interactions when I was applying for roles. I am lucky now that I have that opportunity! What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work? I love all the networking and training programs offered to analysts and associates. As a more junior employee, you feel supported and that the firm is investing in you. I am a chair for the Asia Pacific Analyst & Associate Council, which means I help organize and shape the direction of these programs. In terms of career path, I would love to work in another country with J.P. Morgan, hopefully in London for a few years.

I am an Analyst in Equity Capital Markets within Macquarie Capital. My team assists companies in raising capital including taking private companies public via an IPO process of listing on the ASX. My day to day work may involve looking at equity markets domestically and globally, working closely with various mergers and acquisitions teams in advising clients who want to raise capital and more general transaction or business analysis. I studied Commerce and Law at Monash University, majoring in Finance. What motivated you to pursue your current role and what aspect of it do you find most rewarding? I was motivated to apply for Macquarie Capital because I found myself quite interested in finance at university. I found my major both engaging and challenging. I found subjects such as financial analysis and valuation, and corporate finance quite helpful in developing a foundation upon which to build my skills on the job. Whilst the finance components were helpful, they weren’t essential to my transition into the role. Most of what I have learnt has been on the job and I’ve felt incredibly lucky to learn from so many talented and intelligent people. I’ve also learnt that the skills you learn in a variety of degrees can be helpful at Macquarie Capital; if you have a knowledge base of something niche, it’s valued and can assist in your role.
The interview process can be daunting, but usually the thought of the interview process is more daunting than it actually is. No one expects you to turn up knowing everything there is to know about the role and the company. Being interested and keen to learn is something that a lot of companies look for. A lot of people don’t apply because they self-select out, but don’t let fear hold you back and just give it a go – you never know where you might end up. Can you tell us a little about Macquarie’s culture and environment? What sets it apart? The culture is what motivated me to intern at Macquarie and this remains true in my role now. I feel very lucky to be able to work with such intelligent, down-toearth and approachable people in a teamorientated environment. The people at Macquarie Capital are genuinely invested in your learning and development and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to learn from them. Accounting professional services firms consist of the Big 4 Accounting firms (PwC, EY, KPMG and Deloitte), mid-tier (such as Shinewing) and boutique accounting firms. Within their service lines these firms are often split into the industry of clients they service. This structure gives graduates the opportunity to gain exposure to the different ways clients do business within an industry. Furthermore the large number of employees in a pyramid structure facilitates organised systems of promotion on the grounds of merit and experience.. Professional Services Firms are commonly regarded as accounting firms but have evolved to encompass a variety of services. Students and professionals from a diverse range of bac grounds and degrees find themselves working in the professional services industry. These firms are continually expanding and evolving the services they offer, including areas such as consulting, corporate finance and people management.
Main Divisions of Professional Services Audit & Assurance Independent examination of an organisation’s financial statements to ensure the reports are free from bias and are fair for reliable use by stakeholders. Auditors ensure the reports are in adherence with international accounting standards. This work may involve significant travel and culminates knowledge of both accounting and finance. Forensic Accounting Utilising accounting, auditing, and investigative skills to conduct enquiries into actual or anticipated disputes, often resulting in presentations of expert evidence in a courtroom setting. This work trains Forensic Accountants to look beyond the numbers and deal with other operational aspects of a business. Taxation A constantly evolving and changing field requiring the assessment of procedures to ensure compliance with jurisdictional taxation regulations. Whilst not a prerequisite, for graduates with legal backgrounds, taxation is particularly suitable. Information Risk Management Provision of outstanding business advice on information and technology-related strategies, risks and projects for global, national and local corporations. Corporate Finance Provision of financial advice to corporate clients in regards to security issues and mergers and acquisitions.

I joined Cisco as an Associate Sales Representative in the Cisco Sales Associates Program but now manage Cisco’s top 6 partner companies in New Zealand and act as a liaison between Cisco’s vast global support teams and resources, and our partner companies in New Zealand. My main responsibilities include driving partner profitability and vendor preference with Cisco, ensuring adoption of Cisco’s partner programs and initiatives, and growing Cisco revenue and market share through our channel partners in New Zealand. I am based in our North Sydney office however which is a great opportunity to showcase our future-ways-of-working technologies, and I also travel to New Zealand every few months for partner visits.

Can you tell us a little about CISCO’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? Being such a large global company with offices all around the world, Cisco offers many opportunities to travel as part of your work or to relocate to other countries for work. The opportunities are truly endless and the company truly encourages its employees to seek out new opportunities, to constantly grow, develop your skills and continue improving upon yourself. Personally this is what drove me to join the Cisco family 3 years ago and I have not looked back since!
I always had an interest to travel the world as part of my job and to work with a diverse group of people, so when looking at which global companies would offer travel opportunities, Cisco definitely topped the list for me! Being a large global technology company in an industry that is so dynamic and innovative, it seemed like the ideal career choice to pursue. My Marketing & International Business majors were certainly relevant to the role, however onthe-job learning was the most valuable to me and the company is certainly prepared to teach you the ropes along the way!

Do you have any advice for someone applying for CISCO? Or more specifically, the field you’re involved in? Be clear and truly understand what it is that you hope to gain out of a career with Cisco, and what it is that you can offer to Cisco in return. Cisco is such a large, global, resourceful and reputable company that it will open the doors to many opportunities in the future, but to get your foot in the door and into the industry you must be willing to learn and adapt, be flexible and open-minded, and be open to new experiences. What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work? Cisco is a colossal-sized, highly sophisticated global company with a complex structure and support teams all around the world, so it can be difficult at times to navigate the complicated world that is Cisco! I did not truly understand the size of this company until I attended the annual Cisco GSX (Global Sales Experience) Conference in Vegas in 2015, and there were 18,000+ Cisco employees packed into the MGM Grand Arena.. and that was just the sales teams at Cisco, not including operations or other support functions which actually makes up the majority of the Cisco workforce!

What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role?
Do you have any advice for someone applying for Google? Or more specifically, the field you’re involved in?
I help grow small to medium businesses in Australia and New Zealand by offering them strategic marketing advice, with a focus on Google solutions. The idea is to provide them with the tools and knowledge to keep expanding their digital presence, whether they’re a sports club in New Zealand or the next big cryptocurrency trader. My days can include everything from meeting with clients, identifying their growth opportunities, to eating too much at our Google cafes.
I still draw upon the marketing knowledge I gained from studying and previous work experience, but this is only one piece of the puzzle. My colleagues have experience in everything from philosophy to fashion, and it’s these different perspectives that keep me growing personally and professionally. In that vein, my key advice for someone applying for my role at Google is, as cliche as it sounds, to care more about passion than practicality. Hard skills can always be taught, but the soft skills necessary for every job at Google come from staying actively curious and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.

There is a lot that goes into making Google culture what it is, but what stands out to me most are the people and our love for innovation. No matter which part of the world Googlers have come from (and trust me, I’ve lost track), each person has a thirst for life and knowledge that lends itself to ideas buzzing around the floor. These ideas often lead to initiatives that improve internal processes, cross-team interactions, and 20% projects that become the likes of Google Maps.
What do you find to be the most interesting or challenging part of your work? The fact that I’m constantly learning! It’s no joke when we say Google is constantly changing and growing, so learning to navigate ambiguity is crucial. I’m always upskilling myself to understand different businesses, industries, products, and marketing landscapes to name a few. As someone who feels restless when I stagnate, being in an environment that cultivates growth is the biggest intrigue and challenge of my work.
