PRESIDENTS' ADDRESS Whether it’s your first time strolling the halls of the UNSW Business School, or you’re a seasoned veteran back for another semester of trial balances and financial models; we wish you a warm welcome to UNSW Business School for 2018. You’ve successfully made it to base camp, and now the rest of the climb is in your hands. All this talk of opportunity and change can seem overwhelming for a fresh faced first-year Business students, or at least it was for us. All too familiar is the experience of cringing at the thought of asking for directions to the Mathews Theatre, pulling an all-nighter over the STATS assignment that you knew you had to do for weeks, and awkwardly trying to introduce yourself to that cute first-year in your accounting tutorial. Despite the consistent and at times seemingly relentless challenges, this is a time of personal growth and discovery (HSC English throwback) for those willing to embrace it. All things said, fear not, you’re not alone. That’s where the UNSW Business Society (BSOC) comes in, as a place to grow, meet new people, and make your university experience as incredible as it can be. Backed by the UNSW Business School as the constituent society, we are a not-for profit that aims to facilitate the professional and personal development of its members. We aim to support students through all facets of their university life, offering support, opportunities, and a sense of community to our near 10,000 members. University may be uncharted territory, but BSOC will always be there to guide you. We encourage you all to take this coming year by the horns, don’t leave any stone unturned, and ensure you make the most of the opportunity that surrounds you. This marks the beginning of what is to become one of the most influential chapters of your life, so make the most of it! If you let passion be your guide, knowledge be your tools, and BSOC your trusted companion, who knows what you will discover!

Don’t just dream of a better future, create it. Rebecca Glover is a Chartered Accountant and the Chief Financial Officer of World Vision Australia. We sat down with Rebecca to find out how becoming a CA has helped her to become a difference maker. What is a ‘typical’ day for you? On a typical day, I have a range of conversations and decisions I need to make with regards to primarily the financial management of the organisation. One of the key things that I pay a lot of attention to is understanding what it is that our supporters are interested in funding. What it is that from a field side they have needs in, and understanding how to match those resources that are coming from those donors to those needs in the field. As the chief financial officer, it is imperative for me to be able to say hand on heart that we have done the best we can to make sure our resources are deployed to their maximum effect. What do you enjoy most about your role? What actually brings me a great sense of contentment is the idea that I am using my life as best I can, with the skills that I have, trying to help others. I feel like, in the role that I do now, I am actually using those skills to benefit as many people as possible, and in many corners of the globe. There is something inherently rewarding about knowing that the decisions you make, or the analysis that you’re doing, the report that you’re building, whatever that is, is ultimately to serve others. What advice would you give to students interested in a career in the not-for-profit sector? Get out there and volunteer. It’ll give you a taste of what the sector is actually like. It’s incredibly diverse, and it is very different from the for profit sector, it’s motivated by very different things. The decisions that the organisation makes are based on different criteria. And as an organisation that is there to help other people, I want to employ people who find that intrinsically rewarding. Because to me, this isn’t just any other job. This is a job that other people are depending on us to do our job well. So I’m interested in hiring people who demonstrate that they are interested in helping others too. How do you think becoming a Chartered Accountant has helped your career? I think being a Chartered Accountant has been the key stepping stone in my career. I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to work at the calibre of organisations that I have. I certainly wouldn’t be able to take on this role as Chief Financial Officer at World Vision Australia without having that particular designation. There’s free food at the Dean’s List Award Ceremony. Here are some tips on how to get yourself an invite.
LUCY'S
STUDY TIPS TIP 1: Get organised
One of Newton’s not-as-commonly-known Laws is “no matter how studious the student, a few weeks into the semester everyone will always be behind.” That’s why every little bit of planning before you hit this inevitable time helps. At the start of the semester, mark down from your course outlines when all your assessments are due to gauge when your busy periods will be. Knowing earlier if you have three assignments due in the same week and planning ahead will save you the shock, stress and (hopefully) grades later.
TIP 2: Study smarter not harder
Ask yourself if something works for you – don’t just follow what all the ‘smart people’ are doing. Do I learn better by watching lectures in-person or at 0.75x speed at home? Is it more effective in this subject to write notes or do practice questions? What will I actually gain from reading this HD students notes – should I just write my own? Advice can help but remember to find the most effective study method for yourself.
TIP 3: Utilize the resources available
Struggling together is always better than struggling by yourself. Finding a support network of
other students who study the same courses as you – through BSOC peer mentoring, BSOC camp, societies and more – can make studying (and university!) a whole lot more enjoyable. There are also PASS classes for certain courses that really help break down the course if you’re finding something difficult. These have been known to be extremely helpful and also another great way to meet new people!
TIP 4: Appreciate your first year WAM
Stay around some older students around exam time long enough and you will hear the common outburst of “I wish I tried harder in first year”. It will never be as easy to score marks like in your first-year courses as subjects only get harder, so cushion up that WAM for the wrecking ball of your later subjects.
TIP 5: Find balance
When all has been said, grades are only part of the university experience – it is not a trade-off for having fun, meeting new people and getting involved! University can be one of the best few years of your life – you have the independence to make what you want out of it. So, while at times you might really feel the pressure, just remember that it’s those university experiences you have put yourself out there for that will really stay with you in ten years’ time. How to Be Social 35 Maximise your University Experience 37 How to Apply for Societies 38 Business Societies 42
Uni is a
FRESH START! Starting uni can be a terrifying experience, especially when it seems like you hardly know anyone. If you’re worried about being alone - don’t be! Everyone is in the same boat, everyone is just as confused, and everyone is looking for the same amazing uni experience that you are.
STAYING IN TOUCH
Whilst there are many opportunities to make new friends at uni, it’s equally as important to stay in touch with your old friends. Invest time into the friendships that are important to you and grab lunch, coffee or study together to catch up. Uni will be the best time of your life, and it’s made even better with the right people around you.
34
JOIN SOCIETIES
Involvement with societies is without a doubt the best avenue into meeting new people at UNSW. O-Week is the best means of exposure towards understanding what kind of societies are available to students, keeping in mind to note which ones most interest you. By being actively involved in societies throughout the year, such as through either applying as a subcommittee member or just attending events, it really provides open opportunities to meet new circles of people. What you put in is what you get, in terms of your effort to branch into these societies. Although it may be a bit overwhelming at first, the sooner you start to engage with societies, the better your university experience will be!
There will be so many opportunities thrown at you... and it’s up to you to catch them! Uni is 100% what you make of it, what you put in you get out. So take a leap and dive straight in, don’t be afraid to make mistakes and keep an open mind when approaching every person and situation. You’ll be out of your comfort zone but that’s the only way you’ll grow. Go to the events that’ll be run and meet new faces - you never know how much of an impact they can make on you. If you need that little bit of an extra push, our social events are a great way to get socialising. From meeting new faces at our BSOC First Year Camp and Cruise to having crazy good fun with your new friends at our Pub Crawl and Ball, remember everyone is in the same boat as you. So get out there and get uncomfortable; you’re in for a crazy ride!

Maximise your university experience Written by LISA VU
Why? 1
FRIENDS
Quick story. Coming to university you may encounter either of the 2 things: 1) most of your high school came to your university or 2) you rock up with no friends. Nonetheless, whenever you do come to a new environment, your first instinct is to find out more about the people around you and to find a sense of belonging. Societies are a great opportunity to find yourself and to forge new friendships. Trust me, finding people who have similar interests and aspirations as you will create a more positive and fun university experience.
How?
2
FIND YOURSELF
Are you a bit lost in a rut not knowing where you want to go in life? Societies can help you develop yourself personally which may ignite a passion or unknown skill within you. They are a great avenue to develop your personal skills, as well as discovering your deep passion in life. Discover work that moves you Meet some of our 2018 Uber Grads. Gabrielle Tremblay I studied Physics and Chinese at The University of Sydney (USYD) - an unusual combination. Fun facts: I speak French fluently and grew up in Singapore!
Why did you decide to join the Uber Grad Program? I have always wanted to work in tech. I love the culture of tech companies - the people are usually super smart, driven and have interesting stories. I never actually thought I’d end up working at Uber - we didn’t even have Uber in Singapore when I graduated high school! I decided to join the program because I heard how much people working at Uber loved their jobs and the teams they interacted with. I found out how much autonomy employees had, and the culture seemed awesome. I also love a big challenge!
What are some highlights from your experience so far? I loved all the rotations I did - especially the one with the Ride-Sharing team, and Community Operations team. My Rides rotation gave me the opportunity to learn SQL and get deep into some interesting data about driver behaviours and patterns to help optimise our services. In my Community Operations rotation I did a lot of data work and managed to send a push notification to over 50k+ riders to try and reduce lost items. I never thought I’d find something like lost items quite so riveting. If you like a challenge, enjoy problem solving, and are looking for autonomy in your first job, I highly recommend the graduate program. Uber also has a fun and exciting work culture. More than simply an entry-level position at Uber, the program provides you with visibility across so many areas of the business. You get to meet employees from all the teams, see what they do and try it yourself - it’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity.
