FROM THE EDITORS 5...4…3…2...1...BLAST OFF! You’re hurled across the room as the rocket roars into the stratosphere, a raw concoction of nerves, excitement and bring-it-on-ness coursing through your veins. You press your face against the cold glass of the window and catch a fleeting glimpse of the thousands of ships outside, streaming upwards alongside yours. Slowly, one by one, the ships peel away in lazy arcs across the sky, each carrying a friend, an acquaintance or a classmate to distant planets. Slowly, what had been your entire world for the past few years dwindles to a speck in the distance. You close your eyes. Your heart thumps. The rocket roars. And suddenly…silence. You open your eyes and breathe. It’s amazing. The lamps along the main walkway glisten softly in the darkness like stars. The blades of grass of the village green dance in the wind like comet tails across the cosmos. Who knew that there could be so…much. So much to see. So much to try. So many people to meet. So much to do! Welcome, brave First Year, to the vast, confusing, daunting, amazing and breathtaking world that is UNSW. Don’t worry, you won’t be tackling this beast alone! Say hello to your very own piece of BSOC history! Introducing THE very first edition of the BSOC First Years Guide! Packed to the seams with insightful goodness, the First Years Guide is a publication created by UNSW students for UNSW students and will impart a veritable plethora of knowledge that only New South-ers would know! Whether it’s a walkthrough on enrolment, tips on studying and time management or the down-low on how to get involved in extracurriculars and student societies, we’ve got you covered. All thanks to our talented contributors: Anita Wu, Wenbo Gong, Louise Li, Jackson Tan, Lucy Zhao, Felix Chow, Nelson Tang, Baihe He, Tushaar Garg, Veronica Lin, Jason Chen and Malin Wijesuriya. So wherever your adventure takes you, this trusty little companion will help keep you warm and safe as you sail across the starry skies of uni life. Just remember… We all try to find ourselves at uni. But there’s no harm in getting a little lost along the way… Love, Cindy Nguyen and Will Zhou Publications Directors UNSW Business Society 2017

PRESIDENTS’ ADDRESS We’d like to warmly welcome our new first-year, and return students, to the green pastures and exhilarating battleground that is the UNSW Business School. Over a decade of study has found you thrown into the heart of business academia, in a place you’ll soon come to love. Alas, there is more learning to be done, and more opportunities to be sought, but in a manner unlike you’ve ever experienced before. When we do our own #tbt, we’ve realised that life as a first-year business student might be daunting, but can also open you up to a world of endless possibilities. Whether you approach it as the next stage of your life or time to open up your own can of worms – it is undoubtedly a chance for personal development and discovery. Years ago, we both took our first steps towards embracing it but not before much peril. It was either the perpetual activity of everyone around us or constant wonder about where we were going in life, that seemed to be the most unnerving. Finding our feet in the concrete jungle was nearly incomprehensible and we learnt to deal with our nervousness before the first “stats” assignment or never-before-seen completely multiplechoice Finance test. However, that’s when reaching out to friends or family for support can help you to take complete responsibility for your life, and the six inches in front of you (for all those Al Pacino fans). It’s about time you have a hand in shaping your own future and this is exactly where to start! Throughout your quest to achieve everything and anything at University, you will always have the undying support of the UNSW Business Society (BSOC). Backed by the UNSW Business School as the constituent society, we are a not-for-profit organisation that exists to guide students through their orientation, progression, and graduation. We believe BSOC offers students an opportunity to grow amongst their peers by offering support, guidance and opportunities to make sure you have the best possible experience. So in this arena of developing personally and professionally, BSOC will always be here to guide you. We encourage you all to take this coming year by the horns, don’t leave any stone unturned, and ensure you make the most of the opportunity that surrounds you. Welcome to the next step in your quest in growing up. We’re sure that this is a chapter you’ll never forget.

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND CAMPUS

Here are some helpful tools to help you navigate UNSW’s concrete jungles! Be sure to download them to make your life easier as you travel to and throughout uni.

Make sure you buy the right edition of your textbooks! Always check the ISBN (barcode number) or front cover design to be completely sure. Sometimes, the new edition is virtually identical to older editions with only minor changes. Ask your lecturer if you can still use older editions for your course.

- UNSW KENSINGTON MAP (pdf) - LOST ON CAMPUS - GOOGLE MAPS - UNSW VIR TUAL TOUR - ASK ANOTHER STUDENT!

ONLY BUY PRESCRIBED TEXTBOOKS. NEVER BUY RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS. You will probably never read them and you will often that they are not as helpful.

ADVICE FROM AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT

n e h c n o s Ja WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW? In high school, maintaining high marks was regarded as paramount. While maintaining a high WAM is important, you should not neglect the social aspect of university. The ability to socialise is just as important as maintaining a high WAM. In the workforce, you do not work alone, but as a team. The ability to forge and maintain meaningful relationships becomes an indispensable skill.

DO YOU HAVE ANY tips on socialising?

There is a tendency for international students to congregate amongst themselves as we feel more comfortable and I admit, I have felt this tendency before as well. However, university is a place where you should try new things and get outside your comfort zone. So meet new people and make an effort to put yourself out there! There are many events you can participate in, such as BSOC social events. If you really want to get your hands dirty, you can even apply to be a SubCommittee in different societies and immerse yourself in the local culture.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

Language barriers pose challenges on both the academic and social sense. In academia, since English is not our native tongue, it takes a bit longer to understand the content. It may be frustrating at first, but this is an integral part of the learning process, it is why we chose to come to UNSW in the first place. It may also be hard to socialise with local students since the mismatch in English language skills may cause communication to become difficult. This may deter students from socialising with domestic students. However, the best way to improve your English is to just constantly speak it and what better way to do that than speaking to locals?

SUPPORT SERVICES?

Be sure to join the UNSW mentor program! Your mentor is basically your main point of contact for any issues with integrating to UNSW. Each faculty has a wide range of student services available. For commerce, you can go to business.unsw.edu.au/students/resources/student-centre for services ranging from career advice to health issues.

WENBO’S Study Tips A wise man once said that “P’s get degrees”. That man is now unemployed. Here are some tips to make sure that you don’t wind up like that man.

1. GET ORGANISED

4. MAKE YOUR OWN NOTES

2. UTILISE RESOURCES AVAILABLE

5. YOUR FIRST YEAR WAM IS IMPORTANT

PASS classes are also a blessing. They’re additional optional classes run by the Business School and taught by high achieving students. These provide additional material to help your learning and are also a great way to meet new people!

7. BALANCE OUT YOUR LIFESTYLE

You’ve probably heard this a million times, but seriously make sure you use a diary, to-do list or a calendar to keep as organised as possible. Catching up in university is a lot harder to do than in high school. You’ve only got 13 weeks for 4 subjects compared to the 40 weeks you had to do your 4 or 5 HSC subjects.

Your course outline is your best friend! They contain everything you need to know including assessments, homework schedule and required textbooks.

The EDU also provide helpful literacy and numeracy consultations targeted at helping students with assessment tasks.

3. CRAM EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY

Let’s not kid ourselves, you will be doing a lot of cramming in uni. The best thing to do is to find out what exactly is being tested in the exam. Your lecturer or tutor may drop ‘subtle’ hints, or you can probably guess based on past papers. Don’t just read all the chapters in a textbook, read the paragraphs that you think will score you the most marks.

Isn’t it funny how that one person who everyone asks to borrow notes from always does better than everyone else? Making your own notes is a must as you can tailor it towards your own needs, but also it’s a memorisation process in itself. Don’t be lazy and make notes progressively throughout the semester.

Wanted to take a chill pill after HSC? Think again. You will find many older students saying something along the lines of “I wish I studied harder in my first year”. You will have some of your easiest subjects in first year, it is the best time to prepare your WAM for the wrecking ball of your later subjects.

University is your chance to be truly independent, and can be some of the best years of your life. Get involved, go out with friends, or take up some hobbies. Keep your mind and body healthy, and your grades will follow suit. Ultimately you need to find out what works best for you. You should’ve figured out some of it during high school, but if not there’s still plenty of time during university to find your personal study routine! Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and remember, in ten years’ time no one will even care about your HD WAM.

BA LA NC ED LIFE A ‘balanced life’ is a phrase I have encountered countless times throughout my university life, and is something that we constantly strive for. The idea of a ‘balanced life’ stems from being able to control and evenly distribute the various elements in your life- and for each individual this is different. The more elements you have or want to include in your life, the harder the balancing act. As someone who only has 3 years at university (Commerce), I have learnt that the most important factors contributing to a ‘balanced life’ is not just time management and organisation, but prioritisation and sacrifice. Undoubtedly, the first few weeks of university are quite overwhelming and daunting- filled with countless opportunities to get involved and self-develop. With the amount of societies available on campus, coupled by overseas opportunities, competitions, volunteer positionsit is without a doubt difficult to even begin to fathom selfbetterment and the balancing act. With the goal to leave university as the best possible version of yourself having optimised your time, my first tip is to prioritise your goals in 3 developmental areas: personal, professional and social. Personal being: your family, relationships, spiritual/ religious, fitness, wellbeing (sleep!). Social: friends, networks, parties/events, travel. Professional: societies, internships, work experience, competitions. For many individuals the common aspects to balance in their first year include: classes (contact hours), work, social (parties or university events). However, for many this may be increased depending on their self-development goals or lifestyle including: exercise/sports, society commitments (active role), competitions (business case/ mooting). My biggest recommendation in your first year is to become as involved as possible. University is one huge learning trajectory, and the first step is to educate yourself outside the classroom.

A large aspect that isn’t expounded on, is the opportunity to travel during university. Upon graduation, many of us (who end up in corporate work) are confined to 4 weeks of annual leave, truly limiting the opportunity to travel. So I encourage as many of you to take advantage of the travel opportunities within university or during the long winter/ summer breaks. There are volunteering opportunities to travel with Arc, societies (UMCG, UCC), and even externally to study and travel (London School of Economics, Harvard, ASES Summit). Staying organised and optimising your time is key to a balanced life. I highly recommend a digital calendar (google calendar) to keep track of your day-to-day activities. Coupled with that is a to-do-list (Wunderlist, ToDoist, Evernote, Google Keep) to keep track of daily tasks (organised by subject, project, society) in order to increase productivity and hit deadlines. Being able to get a basic organisation system down, that becomes second nature ensures that you are able to keep track of all the elements within your life. My key takeaway is to really think about what you want out of university and how you want to develop as a person. For example, I prioritised my grades, society commitments, competitions, internships, travel and social life and what was sacrificed was my personal element (family, sleep, fitness). A ‘balanced life’ is not an easy feat, and something you will strive towards everyday - but prioritisation, sacrifice, time management and organisation will help you a long way! Good luck!

Discover work that moves you Meet the 2017 Uber grads. Vivienne Tan I moved to Australia to complete my Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and International Business at The University of Sydney. Getting an early step into Uber as my first job out of university has been an absolute dream, and as Sheryl Sandberg says, “If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat! Just get on.” What are some of the projects you’ve been a part of at Uber? The autonomy Uber gave me as a fresh graduate is incredible. The most exciting thing I’ve experienced so far is the opportunity to be one of the project leads for UberSLEIGH, where I helped organise a toy donation drive to support local charities during the holiday season. I also attended the ‘Uberversity’ training program

at Uber’s San Francisco headquarters, where I got to meet so many talented people and learn more about how Uber began, not to mention eating the most amazing clam chowder and walking along the Golden Gate Bridge.

Harpreet Singh I studied a Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace)/ Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) at the University of New South Wales. I was always a passionate Uber rider before I ever thought of working for Uber, and I felt that the company was changing the way the world moves (and eats). I’m also passionate about the startup scene and won a startup competition at uni, which led me to start my own online e-commerce startup, The Turban Shop, Australia’s first and only online distributor of turbans.

Contd. What made you apply to be an Uber Grad? Going through Uber’s interview process gave me an idea of the company’s culture and values, and I was excited for the opportunity to work on projects that would impact real change in the outside world. This was something that separated Uber from a lot of the other corporate grad roles I applied for. Instead of being a small part of a huge project or process, you were thrown into the deep end and given opportunities and responsibilities that, under normal circumstances, would be given to middle or upper level managers in larger corporations. I knew it would be a challenge and an adventure, and I was excited for the journey ahead. As an Operations Coordinator at Uber, I focus on monitoring and managing trip experiences in Australia and New Zealand, and part of this involves using geospatial data to understand and improve the way traffic moves through CBD areas.

Kim Shea I completed my Bachelor of Commerce degree in International Business and Economics at UNSW. Being a Grad at Uber, and working at Uber in general, is a very unique and incomparable experience. I don’t believe I could have started out anywhere else and be exposed to so much, so quickly. Being able to rotate around different business functions and work on many projects is always an invaluable experience. I loved spending time with the various teams and doing mini-projects with the UberEATS and Support team. What projects have you been a part of at Uber? I’m an Operations Coordinator at Uber. I help analyse and optimise engagement between drivers and riders. I also break down data so we can improve things like cost precision and driver supply. A highlight of my time as an Uber grad has been working on cool Uber products that haven’t been released yet - so keep a lookout!

REMEMBER THAT UNI IS A FRESH START!

Feeling anxious about starting uni? Scared you won’t be able to make new friends? Dont be! Everyone is just as confused with the many things happening at the start of uni. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people and ask questions - everyone entering university for the first time is in the same boat and likewise, older students are more than willing to help! •

Say hi to the people sitting around you in tutorials or lectures. It can be difficult to make friends in a learning environment so if you like them, invite them for coffee, lunch, or to study together. Do not close yourself off, try out new things, sign up for everything you can early to make sure you are notified of future events. Try and meet new people – don’t stick to your high school friends. Your best friends are the ones outside high school who you have not met yet. Many friendships are also made through PASS due to the small class sizes and time spent each week over course material.

CATCHING UP WITH OLD FRIENDS Coming into university, it was really easy to fall into the assumption that by being in the same degree, having the same lectures or having the same uni days, your friendships would be just like high school. What I found was that you really have to be proactive in making time for the people that matter. Often I found myself caught up in a lot of activities, work or study - meaning the time I spent seeing certain people gradually decreased. While some friendships inevitably fall out, follow up on the ones important to you. Make the effort to set a time and place to meet for a casual

- felix

JOIN SOCIETIES! Societies are truly your best means to meet new people. At the multitude of O-Week stalls, I signed up for any society that even vaguely interested me - from volunteering and consulting societies to degree related societies- and followed on with their updates throughout the year. Whether you’re in the society as a subcommittee member or you attend the events, just by being actively involved means you open up opportunities to meet a whole new circle of really great people. From what I’ve found, it really is a ‘you get what you give’ situation - make the effort to go to society events, talk to new people and look into subcommittee opportunities! I’ve formed all of my closest friend circles through societies and my university experience would honestly not be the same.

COME TO EVENTS AND INTERACT! Making friends is about having the right attitude more than anything! Being open-minded is key. It will allow you to relate to a diverse range of personalities and find common ground in any situation. See every new face as an opportunity to express yourself and to learn things about them that might interest you. Take initiative to be fun and positive in your interactions whether they are with friends or with people you haven’t previously met! This might mean pushing outside of your comfort zone, but the reward of finding a new friend with similar interests and goals, or someone you have great chemistry with can far outweigh the initial awkwardness. Persist when your effort is not reciprocated because people often close off in the moment due to personal reasons Having this kind of mentality can take you a long way, whether that is having tonnes of fun at BSOC Cruise, making new friends in the classroom, or creating unforgettable memories at Pubcrawl. Whatever type of event you’re looking for: social, sport, professional or educational, BSOC has it all and they are all amazing opportunities to meet new friends!

Uni life is a fresh start, something different and you’re always not sure what you will expect. With a new start comes new opportunities! There are always new opportunities at UNSW that you can apply, volunteer or sign yourself up for. Whether that be the role of a subcommittee member of a student society like BSOC or MSOC, a volunteer for an Arc Program like Arc Street Team, a student consultant or even applying to be a peer mentor, there are many different ways and reasons for you to get involved.

1. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

university.

As cliché as it may sound, personal development is a great aspect of any university initiative. I really gained the skills and confidence to manage events, become a more organised or competent person and teach and lead other students out there. It’s a really good way to develop your leadership, team-work and public speaking skills!

Along with friends and personal development, you have many opportunities to talk to absolutely anyone and everyone, I gained so many skills that allowed me not to just hold conversations but love meeting and talking to all kinds of people.

2. FRIENDS It goes without saying that when you enter new environments you are bound to meet new people. Joining student societies or picking up extracurricular activities will allow you to meet a whole group of people, who share the same interests as you and have similar goals. That’s when I personally started loving to go to

3. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

4. FIND YOUR PASSIONS Exploring extracurricular activities around university will allow you to really explore your own passions and interests and give you opportunities, people and initiatives that you can really put your heart and passion into. People that you care about, and a cause you are

NOW WHERE DO YOU START? During O-Week you have the awesome opportunity to sign up for student societies, so make sure that you check out absolutely anything and everything!

1.

SIGN UP FOR MAILING LISTS Yes it is a little tedious at first, but this is the perfect way to stay up to date with the societies’ opportunities for you students!

3.

TALK TO PEOPLE Always talk and ask for advice, or even sign up for a peer mentoring program! People in university are a lot nicer than they may

2.

LIKE/JOIN THEIR FACEBOOK GROUP All societies, even Arc@UNSW will regularly update their Facebook groups or create Facebook events to keep their members in

4.

KEEP BEING A KEEN BEAN! Be motivated, stay on-top of deadlines, and make sure to just give it a go! (This may need to be changed)

VERONICA LIN Applying to become involved in a society is an exciting time. It is a great step forwards, towards enriching your university life here at UNSW. Not all societies require an application process in order to become an active member – however many business related societies have this process, the UNSW Business Society included. So what exactly will help you stand out from everyone else?

GETTING STARTED

There are three fundamental steps which are important for you to know and understand when applying for a society. These tips and steps will help not only be helpful for the application process, but the interview stage as well:

1. Know what the society does and stands for

You need to understand the vision of the society and how that relates to its aims For example, the UNSW Business Society stands to provide social, academic, professional and personal development opportunities for all business-related students

2. know what your role entails

Tailoring your responses to match the requirements of your role are essential If your role is more technical then you need to ensure that you are adequately prepared to demonstrate this in the application If your role has a heavy focus on a face-to-face interaction with students, then use an example that highlights your ability to communicate with a variety of people effectively

3. know and understand its values

Be able to link the societies values to your own passions, attitudes and skills Be able to resonate with these values and highlight why they are important to you and how you might be esteemed by them

tips for written applications - Answer in a logical manner - Always be able to explain your experiences if the question actually asks - Use examples whenever you feel like you are unable to properly express yourself - Reflect upon what you have written - make sure that it is coherent and has logical flow - Check for grammatical mistakes - it can be perceived as a sign that you lack of attention to detail!

TIPS FOR THE INTERVIEW STAGE

Interviews are an important stage in helping the interviewer further understand your motivations. It is also when the interviewer will assess your suitability for the role, how you may problem solve, work together in a team or present yourself under stressful situations.

1. WHEN TALKING ABOUT YOURSELF AND EXAMPLES OF EXPERIENCES •

Make sure you align your own passions with the society but also let your unique personality shine through – what makes you a person that is likeable? What values do you hold and what are you going to gain from this experience? Differentiate yourself against others by leaving behind a memorable trait or making sure have linked what you have gained from learning experiences and how this has developed you as a person. How can you leverage your technical, volunteer, leadership, or interpersonal development experiences in order to make yourself stand out?

2. WHEN TALKING ABOUT THE SOCIETY ITSELF •

As mentioned before, know what the society stands for and be able to reiterate why this is important or how this society stands apart from other societies

3. DURING SCENARIO BASED QUESTIONS • •

Ensure you understand the scenario and address all facets of the scenario Consider all stakeholders that are impacted by the problem in the scenario

4. during scenario based questions (in a team) • • • •

Do not overpower over people’s ideas Rather, elevate other people’s opinions and be able to incorporate them into your own. This shows an ability to respect other people’s ideas and collaboration. If you think another person has a bad idea, it is important to let them finish before you speak in disagreement Always use logic to argue instead of personal bias, and this will ensure that your argument is grounded and not all waffly!

HANDY TIPS FOR PREPARING YOURSELF FOR SUCCESS! 1. FIND CLUBS ON THE ARC ORGSYNC WEBSITE 2. LIKE/JOIN SOCIETY FACEBOOK PAGES AND GROUPS 3. NETWORK 4. ASK FOR FEEDBACK 5. BE GENUINE ABOUT YOUR INTENTIONS AND BE CONFIDENT

BAIHE HE

Wait, what? Networking? LinkedIn? Isn’t “networking” only for people who are about to graduate? We shouldn’t have to worry about exchanging contacts and all that stuff as first years, right? Well, think again. Establishing and building relationships takes time and effort and that means that the sooner you engage in it, the better. It is a chance to discover what you and your degree are capable of and consolidate the myriad of careers available to you. No one can place a value on this but yourself. But that is not to say that companies have not tried. Every year, the industry places different values on tangibles from networking luncheons to written guides to professional workshops. In fact, recently, Microsoft acquired an extravagant $26 billion price tag to LinkedIn. Think of LinkedIn as a digital map of the people in the global economy. It shows not only who you are and what you do, but also how you are connected with one another on a global scale. It’s an invaluable networking platform for all students. So, without further ado, here are 5 tips to get you started on your LinkedIn endeavors.

1. Make sure your profile picture is helping Your profile picture is literally the face of your LinkedIn presence. Last Saturday’s photos may be humorous for FaceBook, but a well lit and well-dressed portrait will be your best friend for LinkedIn.

2. Use A Headline That is Searchable Your headline is one of the best places to score instant keyword points. It’s also one of the easiest spots to slip in a buzzword and cut your chances of being found by potential employers.

3. Describe your experiences with detail There is a story in your experiences that is unique and interesting. Until you figure that out, your LinkedIn will just be a list of names and job titles. Tell a little bit of your story in what you did and achieved. When you tell employers of your story, they will envision you in that situation.

4. Gain Inspiration from others Not sure how to phrase your achievements? Wondering what people in the industry got up to during their time at uni? Give their profile a quick squizz, and who knows, you might find something that interests you.

5. Keep your profile updated Your LinkedIn is looking spiffy now, but this is just the beginning. Don’t forget to update your network of all the new and exciting things that you are a part of further down the road. BONUS TIP: Need a suit for your LinkedIn photo? BSOC has partnered with MJ Bale to provide a few suits for financially disadvantaged students for free in 2017. If you are interested, please contact partnerships@unswbsoc.com.

If you yearn to go a step further in 2017, with a desire to develop yourself outside of the Business School’s hallowed classrooms, then there are a range of opportunities to get involved with BSOC. Whether you’re hoping to cultivate your leadership and management skills or just looking to try your hand at something new, BSOC can assist you in your conquests! To determine your fit for the role at hand, you will most often take part in an online application and interview process with the program coordinators. Below are some of the many ways to be part of the larger organisational team, and some inside “goss” as to how it all goes down!

SUBC OMMI TTEE

Being part of BSOC “Subcom” makes you an integral part of the wider, permanent organisational team. This role is a year-long commitment, and allows you to develop in line with the strategic goal of your chosen portfolio. BSOC has 12 diverse portfolios however only offers subcommittee opportunities in 8. Each portfolio caters to the different needs of the wider BSOC member base, so whether you’re interested in designing and developing articles, like this one, in the Publications portfolio or want to try your hand at running professional development based events in the Careers portfolio; there’s something out there just right for you! Each portfolio can range its subcommittee intake from 4-12 members, depending on its needs and vision. Applications open in Week 2 of Semester 1, so keep your eyes peeled for the Facebook event.

PHILA NTHROPY B SQUA D

In its inaugural year, the BSquad is a program which allows students who have a passion for philanthropy to give back to the community on a rotating basis. Unlike the archetypal subcommittee structure, the Philanthropy portfolio will call upon the services of volunteers on a program-by-program basis. These volunteers will take part in the management aspect of the program, and may also be actively involved in the activity run. Still in its early development stages, this program will be a riveting experience for all those involved. Applications to join the foundational BSquad (and to be a part of BSOC history) will open early Semester 1; for more information, contact philanthropy@unswbsoc.com.

C OMPE TI TI ON S ORGA NI SING TEAM

Another introductory program in 2017, the competitions Organising Team will consist of members whom display an interest in assisting in the administration of sponsor-based competitions. OT members will gain valuable experience in running a competition and will also have the chance to get to know some of BSOC’s sponsors better! This small team will operate on a rotating basis, with new members joining the portfolio to assist with each of BSOC’s four competitions throughout the year. Keep an eye out for applications, which will open prior to each competition; for more information, contact competitions@unswbsoc.com.

A ND MA NY MORE OPPOR T UNI TIE S

BSOC employs the services of hundreds of volunteers through numerous programs, which are planned for over 6 months in advance. So keep an eye out for opportunities to become a Peer Mentor in 2018 (applications open in the Winter holidays), BSOC Director in 2018 (applications open late Semester 2) and Orientation Camp Leader in 2018 (applications open at the end of Semester 2). For more information on getting involved with anything whatsoever feel free to shoot an email through to info@unswbsoc.com! Good luck young padawans!

BSOC BOARD 2017

CATHERINE HU

The lighter half of our Rush Hour presidential duo, Catherine may have the sleep schedule of a grandma (legends say that she retires as early as 8pm), but our Co-Pres more than makes up for it during the day. When she’s not busy role-playing as Jacky Chan and flaunting her black belt, you can find Cath winning national art competitions with ease and serenading everyone with her own brand of Chinese Opera. But in all seriousness, Catherine is one of the most caring and dedicated people you’ll ever meet, so if you ever see our resident BFG, come up and say hi!

WENBO GONG

Is that a bird? Is that a plane? No, it’s Wenbo “I do actuarial” Gong! With a HD WAM and CPA award under his belt, he may seem like your average, run-of-the-mill genius, but really, our Treasurer is so much more. When he isn’t busy helping companies meet capital requirements at EY (yes, he is also an intern), Wenbo is busy helping others with his expert knowledge and down-to-earth advice. Our resident Superman will always be there for you when you need him, and though oceans are his kryptonite, he’ll tide you over with his witty bants and lit stories any day!

ANITA WU

With two years of devoted experience in the Social Portfolio, it’s as if the ‘a’ in VPA stands for ‘Anita’! With an eye for detail, the mind of a brilliant consultant and a knack for efficiency, you can trust Anita to lead Activities to new heights! Outside her university life, Anita enjoys travelling and exploring hidden gems of the world. If you first meet her in an interview, don’t be deterred by her infamous interview eyes as underneath, is someone who is friendly and caring, always willing to dish up incredible advice (and more than often, banter).

CO-PRESIDENT

TREASURER

VP OF ACTIVITIES

Tushaar may try to blast the J.Cole and Kendrick like he’s straight outta Compton, but we all know the truth when this vegetarian rolls up in his Corolla! Nevertheless, with his public speaking prowess and proven leadership, it’s no wonder that Tush is at the helm of BSOC. This Co-Pres has got game: if he’s not shaking his groove thang at a wedding, he’s leading his cricket team to victory. So if you see our glorious leader at uni, feel free to challenge him to a round of ONESHAAAAR AND HIS DOOOG!

TUSHAAR GARG CO-PRESIDENT

VERONICA LIN

VP OF OPERATIONS

BAIHE HE

VP OF EXTERNAL

MICHAEL LIANG

Don’t let Baihe He’s bashful name catch you by surprise. His name is but a cruel onomatopoeia of his laugh after he burns your soul with devastating lowkey savagery. But every beast has an Achilles heel, and his is an insatiable desire to sleep. You can find this roast demon lying dormant just about anywhere, replenishing his fire so he’s ready to roast the next person he sees with misaligned Powerpoint slides. Jokes aside, our VPE is all fun and games, so challenge him to a cheeky LoL sesh or game of 500 and soon you too will find yourself saying Bai hehehhehehe!

Michael Liang and the term ‘entrepreneur’ go hand in hand. When he’s not working at fintech startup Pay Dock or reading on how to make himself a better human being, he’s looking at sneakers and learning how to DJ/produce music. It is an ongoing meme that Michael is expected to give a speech after any BSOC event, a reflection of his exceptional oratory and presentation skills. In 2016 Michael helped shaped the direction of partnerships within BSOC, his zeal and passion for others will definitely aid him in his duties as VPI for 2017.

VP OF INTERNAL

Put your hands together for the bearer of UNSW’s most contagious smile! Veronica’s already got a place inVERONICA history as BSOC’s inaugural VPO LIN and now she’s on her way to conquer VP OF OPERATIONS the world – one international case competition at a time! But don’t pump her tires with too much sarcasm, she still struggles to understand it (no, seriously). This bubbly Veep is perpetually planning her next getaway overseas or dancing away at Sydney’s biggest festivals in the little spare time she has. But don’t her busy schedule scare you, she will always make time for her friends, so come and say Hi!

When she’s not breaking ankles in the basketball courts, Lucy “Beyoncé” Zhao is breaking hearts in the streets with her fiery “au naturel” hair and fashion model instincts. Despite making us all feel intellectually incompetent with her HD WAM and sea of scholarships, Lucy is incredibly down-to-earth, hard-working and caring. The ONLY hopeless romantic that hates walks on the beach, Lucy instead prefers to satisfy her wanderlust and walk across the world. So if you see Lucy at uni, pull up a chair and prepare to be wowed by tales of adventure. Queen BeySOC may forget your name, but she’ll make your day!

Like Ellen Degenerous, Felix is just impossible to hate. With a smile that can brighten up anyone’s day, Felix is a connoisseur of some of THE weirdest memes that you will ever see, with his unique sense of humour scaring even the dankest of meme lords away. One can spend an eternity trying to find anyone that dislikes our adventurous Social director. If you ever need someone to DnM with, then look no further. As an avid music festival fan with his own share of stories for you to CHOW down on, Felix will always be there for you.

Our talented Sports Director is an ace on more than just the netball court. Fun-loving, humble and chill, if she’s not scoring net after net, Sharron is topping the leaderboards in Mario Kart. Indeed, her Wii driving skills translate to real life, so if you’re ever in need of a lift, strap in because your heart won’t be the only thing racing! In her free time, Sharron re-watches episodes of Sherlock while cuddling her pet rabbit Toovee. So Toovee or not to be? That is the question. Sharron will be always be in full swing around uni so don’t be afraid to come and say hi!

JACKSON TAN

SOCIAL DIRECTOR ACTIVITIES

JAMES CAI

SPORTS DIRECTOR ACTIVITIES

Jackson might not be the iconic face of BSOC, but he is the belly. Always dressed in pink, when Jackson isn’t serenading you with “An Jing” or a K-pop rap verse, he will most likely be found spending over 6 hours at the gym in one sitting (not working out but actually working). But despite his chronic sarcasm and poor pun game, Jackson is a genuine, attentive and down-to-earth guy who’s a great friend to have. So, get keen for social events this year! With Jackson on the team, they’ll be sure to make you go, ‘WOW, Fantastic Baby’.

If James Cai ever flashes you his cheeky grin, you better watch out! This lean machine of a state long jumper will leap over cars, people, mercy and compassion to deliver his devastating banter. Never one to shy away from the spotlight, this basic selfie queen loves nothing more than sending snaps on his “throne.” Clearly, James is a man of many fluids. When he’s not sweating on the racetrack, he’s blubbering while watching Your Name. Hilarious and easy going, there is no doubt that James’ ability to LEAP over obstacles will help Sports reach new HEIGHTS in 2017!

Meet Susanna! She’s bubblier than Easyway and sassier than a cheeky selfie. This corgi lover is the friendliest face that you will ever see! Constantly triggered by roasts about her height, Susanna struggles every night: a veteran of the eternal crusade against the Asian flush. An avid Korean drama fan, Susanna has an EXTENSIVE collection of Korea’s finest bachelor celebrities. But despite her awful tastes in television, Susanna is one of the loveliest and SUSANNA CHEN kindest people at UNSW. So if you EDUCATION DIRECTOR spot a tomato bobbing up and EXTERNAL down and jamming to classic RnB hits at uni, don’t be afraid to join!

A high key (and sassier) David Attenborough, Luke loves nature, with the exception of lizards. When baby Luke’s beloved LUKE CLINCH grape was snatched from his EDUCATION DIRECTOR hands by a lizard, our Edu director EXTERNAL was forever traumatised. Jokes aside, Luke loves meeting new people, so don’t be a stranger!

Down-to-earth, smart and hardworking, Jeff will undoubtedly soar Careers to new heights. So if you catch Jeff walking his incredibly cute doggo, give him a hug in LIU of a hello!

When our ever so innocent yet gullible Competitions Officer, Joanna Ma isn’t busy trying to interpret the YMCA as part of her next muzz, she’s plotting to bring Sydney a white Christmas with her 12 Christmas playlists and perpetual smile.
