China’s employment outlook for graduates Industry

Future outlook

The Chinese economy is undergoing dramatic rebalancing and experiencing profound changes. These changes are having a direct impact on China’s labour market and employment prospects. Many sectors are feeling the effects of structural changes taking place across the Chinese economy.

Business

• Finance remains a strong area of employment • Logistics, HR and Marketing are cited as emerging demand areas • Start-ups are on the rise and increasingly a viable option to many talented graduates • Regional factors are critical and more opportunities are available outside of first-tier cities

Engineering

• Extremely positive for engineering graduates in terms of both job placement and remuneration • Occupations across many sectors will continue to be in high demand and particularly relevant to graduates from high quality programs, such as those provided by UNSW • Engineering management capabilities are in particularly short supply • Resources, power and geological engineering are especially favourable • Mid-tier cities have significant demand gaps

Energy

• Long-term energy scarcity drives continued expansion in jobs and services • Investments in oil and gas extraction are to be significantly expanded • Regions require deeper expert recruitment and further tapping into highly skilled graduates • Qualified UNSW graduates should benefit greatly provided they are flexible to work in different regions of China • Nearly all resource engineering fields have positive outlooks with enormous demand for energy alternatives and professionals

Cities and Environment

• Continuing urbanisation across China to drive robust long-term trends • Strong demand for professionals working in architecture, design, planning, real estate and related services • More private sector environmental jobs to appear in the short to medium term

Aviation

• Macro trends remain positive, with continuing opportunities for graduates • Increasing regional aviation infrastructure demand • Particularly promising in provincial aerospace hubs such as Harbin, Xi’an and Chengdu for those with the soft skills and technical knowledge necessary to manage these hubs • Defence budgets are growing and should continue to drive employment

Medical Sciences

• Health management emerging as major employment area • Private health on the rise and set to be a key area of consumption • Public health a further area of demand especially in interior regions • Industries built around the health system - pharmaceuticals, care management, hospitals, medical products and services - are projected to grow dramatically • A positive environment for both undergraduate and postgraduate students with a high calibre of training

Media and Creative Industries

• Ample room for further expansion across all areas • Foreign joint ventures will provide entry points for graduates • High demand for marketing and advertising talents • Favouring highly talented individuals

Design

• Advantage for international graduates with talent • Cyclical demand for interior designers • Significant demand from 2nd to 4th tier cities • Good prospects for well trained and talented graduates

CHINA’S EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK FOR GRADUATES

• Private enterprise has emerged as China’s leading employer thanks to policies that encourage the growth of small and medium sized enterprises as engines of growth and innovation. In 2012, 44.9% of workers were employed by private enterprises compared to 25% by state-owned enterprises. The rise of more innovative, smaller companies in China often backed by private capital, in areas such as technology and design, signals a recent but sustainable trend.

2

• Start-ups and entrepreneurial jobs represent a growing and important area for job growth. In 2013, a reported 2.3% of college graduates started their own business. While still a very small percentage, it represents a significant increase compared to 0.3% in 2011 and 0.7% in 2012. This growth looks set to continue with recent reforms announced by the Ministry of Education. This complements UNSW’s status as the home of Australia’s technology entrepreneurs. • New emerging industries such as new energy, environmental protection, new materials, advanced equipment manufacturing, new generation information technology, alternative energy vehicles and biotechnology, are taking the focus away from more traditional labour intensive industries. • The employment market is softer in the traditional eastern seaboard strongholds of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. As the benefits of China’s economic growth become more widely felt across the country, enormous employment opportunities are being offered by the 2nd, 3rd and even 4th tier cities.

China needs to secure talents today A recent McKinsey study shows China is expected to face a shortage of eight million university-qualified workers by 2020. Due to an ageing population and a declining under 18-year-old population, the economy is rebalancing with greater opportunities in the services sector and jobs with higher productivity. These jobs favour highly skilled workers. At the moment, occupations in sectors such as architecture, engineering and economics have high job placement rates and starting salary levels in China, indicating strong demand from employers to fill jobs in these sectors. Supply shortages tend to push monthly wages higher. Irrespective of supply and demand issues, graduate quality is another challenge. Industry observers frequently cite job readiness and experience as ‘game changers’ when assessing candidates for graduate employment programs. Given UNSW’s focus on internships, careers, employment services and applied learning, this provides UNSW graduates with a distinct advantage.

Promising future with a UNSW degree According to the 2014 Chinese Colleges Graduates’ Employment Report, students in architecture, safety engineering and geological engineering have the highest rates of employment within six months after graduation. Combining these results with employment rates, monthly salaries and job satisfaction, the same survey lists the leading eight “most employment friendly” majors, all of which are UNSW’s academic strengths. They are: • Architecture • Geological Engineering • Mineral Processing Engineering • Mining Engineering • Oil and Gas Storage and Transport Engineering • Automotive Engineering • Urban Planning • Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering The next part of this Guide will introduce UNSW degrees across eight industry clusters which align our strengths against key areas of strong employment demand in China.

Valuable workplace skills and networks

Valuable workplace skills are quite often described as ‘soft skills’. Unlike hard skills, which are generally an individual’s technical skill set and ability to perform certain functional tasks, soft skills are personal attributes, such as an ability to contribute in a team setting and to speak publicly and think creatively. They enhance an individual’s interpersonal relationships, job performance and career prospects. It is often said that hard skills will get you an interview but you need soft skills to get a job and to keep it.

This is China and Australia’s moment Almost 200,000 jobs in Australia are created by direct exports to China, with direct trade with China contributing 5.5% to Australia’s GDP – double that of agriculture, forestry and fishery combined.

The services economy now represents the biggest cluster of China’s labour market with more than a third of the entire workforce employed in the sector. This is forecast to grow dramatically as the nation urbanises.

China’s financial sector reform - including interest rate liberalization, increased foreign investment, the building of wealth management and pension products, international accounting standardisation and other areas - will require dramatic changes in the way financial sector workers are qualified and trained.

What does industry say? “We have problems finding the right person in our advisory practice – including areas such as risk management and management consulting”. – A Big 4 Accounting Firm executive in an exclusive interview with UNSW

“The Central government wants to establish their own local firms beyond the Big 4 accounting firms...so there will be a new structure of local accounting firms. With encouragement from central government, they want to establish their own big-city firm and increase competitiveness in international markets.” – CPA Firm based in Beijing

China’s asset management industry is in its infancy. It is 5.1 per cent of GDP compared to 240 per cent in the US. But it is projected to grow rapidly to 10 per cent by 2015.

China has commenced an unprecedented wave of reforms designed to provide the private market with a ‘decisive role’ in the economy.

These reforms include a bold trial programme to introduce private banks, liberalise interest rates and establish Free Trade Zones to stimulate high-value global trade.

China ranked fourth in the world for the size of venture capital investment in 2013 behind the US, Europe and Canada. Total venture investment in 2013 reached US$3.5 billion or 7.2 per cent the world total (US$48.5 billion).

“[In Australia] so far there are already fifty SOEs that have established representative offices in Perth. The Chinese government is encouraging them to go abroad to develop overseas markets. They need talent to help their business grow – accounting is a key job function for them.” – CPA firm based in Beijing “Our business will continue to grow, the demand for talented and experienced candidates and graduates will continue to grow, particularly in finance, analytics and technology.” – Multinational Bank

Engineering talent is critical to the Chinese Dream

“Areas of high demand include civil engineers and electrical engineers with project management skills.”

Under the “New Silk Road” framework, a massive infrastructure project aimed at linking China with three continents over land and sea is expected to pave the way for more infrastructure investment in the region. Asia’s national infrastructure investments are estimated to be $8 trillion over the 2010 – 2020 period or $730 billion annually.

– MNC foreign engineering firm

“Top recruitment demand has previously been concentrated in the coastal area—Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Going forward, more demand is coming from 2nd tier cities such as Wuhan or Chongqing.”

By the end of 2015, China is expected to record a 54% expansion in the length of railways, a 157% expansion in the length of expressways, a 62% increase in the number of airports and a 132% increase in the capacity of shipping container terminals.

– Foreign electronics co-executive

“We don’t lack marketers but we do lack engineers…It’s so hard to find skilled workers and engineers. Ask any HR person, the biggest headache in hiring is coming from the engineers supply chain—even if we include overseas China graduates.”

China is planning some of the world’s most spectacular engineering marvels including the world’s longest undersea tunnel and the world’s tallest building. The UN estimates the population of China will reach 1.45 billion by 2050. Engineers will be needed to develop infrastructure and new technologies to ensure this growth is matched by productivity gains. According to the ‘Made in China 2025’ plan released this May, China aims to build a high-end manufacturing sector. Chinese manufacturers are expected to have boosted their productivity immensely through innovation and by creating a batch of globally competitive multinational companies that are both resource efficient and environmentally friendly by 2025. The plan highlights ten focus areas covering new information technology, numerical control tools and robotics, aerospace equipment, ocean-engineering equipment and hi-tech ships, railway equipment, energysaving and new-energy vehicles, power equipment, new materials, biological medicine and medical devices, and agricultural machinery. China aims to make breakthroughs in key technologies, including improving homegrown computer chips’ adaptability, enhancing mobile communications technology and producing multipurpose robotics.

30% Australia is a major supplier to China’s energy industry supplying more than 30% of China’s annual coal needs and 24% of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply.

Chinese companies are investing more in Australia’s energy sector with major Chinese players such as Yancoal, Shenhua, PetroChina, Sinopec and CNOOC investing billions of capital in Australia

China is undergoing an energy revolution

What does industry say? “China’s energy sector is a top strategic priority…Household energy consumption in China is set to expand in line with urbanisation and overall economic growth. The combination of these factors creates enormous demand for energy alternatives and the training professionals to bring them to fruition.” – Leading market research firm

The Chinese government plans to cap coal use to below 65% of total primary energy consumption by 2017 as part of its efforts to diversify the nation’s energy mix.

China raced ahead of the United States and became the world’s largest energy consumer in 2010 and the world’s largest power generator in 2011.

China plans to double the number of wind turbines by 2020.

China is set to become one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas importers, with analysts predicting the nation will need a fifth of the 272 million tonnes of gas expected to be produced globally by 2018.

China is the world’s second largest consumer of oil and surpassed the United States as the world’s largest net oil importer in September 2013.

There were approximately 6.5 million direct and indirect jobs in renewable energy in 2013 and the demand for renewable energy specialists continue in an upward trend. China is one of the six largest employers in the world.

China has investments in renewable energy that exceed US$52 billion, ranking it first in the world. These investments, and the skills necessary to bring them to fruition, are a critical part of China’s overall economic reforms.

Installed nuclear power capacity is expected to reach 58 million kW by 2020. With 30 million kW currently under construction, China is set to become the world’s largest nuclear power producer.

“Within the energy sector, high entry salary levels for engineers reflect a lack of quality to fill positions and the regional mismatches (there are energy related projects in the interior of China, outside of major cities and key provinces).” – Big energy company “In the energy sector, our observation is that people are always focused on the large companies. Rio Tinto, they have long queues…not so much for the small companies.” – Australian Government

Shape your future in China’s sleepless cities According to estimates by the United Nations Development Program, another 310 million people are expected to migrate internally within China to cities from the 260 million that have already migrated to cities (or helped create new cities) over the previous 60 years. China’s rapid urbanisation continues to be a central theme of its economic and social development. This macro trend underpins strong demand for professionals working in architecture, design, planning, real estate and related services. New developments will most likely need to adhere to more stringent environmental standards, creating demand for professionals with training and credentials. McKinsey forecasts that China’s urbanisation will generate an additional 175 million jobs by 2025. China’s construction and housing market remains a significant component of China’s overall GDP. Construction spending in 2013 reached US$1.8 trillion, and a recent survey predicts annual growth of 7.3% over the next five years. Real estate wages increased at a CAGR of 13% over the 2003 to 2011 period and 19% in 2011 alone, reflecting China’s dramatic growth in property development overall.

What does industry say? “We are recruiting not only for the architectural studio, but also for graphics and 3D and modeling and rendering - specialised techniques. We are looking for candidates all year round.” – Leading architecture firm

“The Asian employment market is very good - most of the projects are here, so we have a real opportunity to hire people.” – Australian architecture firm

“Every employer is trying to hire more people, employees want to find jobs, but it seems they are not on the same page. You don’t always find the right people, or the right people don’t want to take the job. If you have more projects, the other design firms also have more projects and you’re hiring at the same time.” – Australian architecture firm

“The recruitment situation is quite challenging in Guangzhou. This is not necessarily because the demand isn’t there; it’s just that the talent pool is quite small.” – Leading architectural firm

According to the statistics from China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, the environmental industry kept a 20% annually growth rate from 2004 to 2014, and is expected to generate a turnover of US$810 billion in 2015. China is investing a record US$330 billion to tackle water pollution and US$227 billion to battle air pollution in urban areas.

China is at the forefront of global reform and innovation in the healthcare sector In the newly released ‘Made in China 2025’ plan, which aims to make China a global manufacturing power, ‘biological medicine and medical devices’ is listed as one of the ten focus areas.

China’s healthcare spending is projected to increase from US$357 billion in 2011 to over US$1 trillion by 2020. McKinsey estimates the current size of China’s medical products and pharmaceutical markets to be US$71 billion (No. 3 globally) and US$220 billion (No. 3 globally) respectively. China’s 12th Five Year Plan identified the biomedical industry, including pharmaceuticals and medical devices, as a strategic industry—one of only seven. China’s biotech industry is expected to reach $630 billion by the end of 2015. This is an excellent opportunity for medical and science professionals in the fields of biotechnology, chemistry, molecular and cell biology, and pharmaceutical medicine. There is increasing focus on medical technology and telemedicine to address shortages of welltrained physicians. This includes the establishment of a health records system for over 75% of China’s population. By 2050, the number of Chinese aged over 50 is expected to be more than 25% of the population and this is driving more than US$10 billion of annual investment in the aged care sector. China’s market for over-the-counter and generic medicines will grow from a modest US$23 billion in 2010 to an astronomical US$369 billion by 2020.

What does industry say? “Health care continues to be one of the growing sectors in the Chinese economy. So definitely double digit growth. There is expansion of headcounts in sales-based organisations, with a lot of new graduates joining at the entry-level.” – Shanghai-based recruiter specialising in the healthcare sector “There’s a lot of demand for quality product and product registration people and a huge shortage of graduates who have the university training in Pharmacology and Biochemistry. The trend across the healthcare sector is that they want local talent who can take up roles in the company. They are looking for well-educated Chinese nationals and they will continue to promote them and get away from the model where they’re always dropping in expats into senior management roles.” –Principal of an executive search firm in China “Shanghai is increasingly becoming the centre for healthcare, not just for China but also for Asia, with a lot of healthcare companies setting up their headquarters there, pharmaceuticals in particular. We’re also seeing a lot of activities in the 2nd tier cities where there are a few companies trying to build private hospitals in Ningbo, and more and more companies are opening research facilities in Chengdu and Chongqing.” – Principal of an executive search firm in China “There is a massive shortage of research scientists and talent on the research and drug development sides. The local universities are producing a lot of researchers but the quality is not the same compared to Australia and other western countries in terms of critical thinking and lateral thinking. Having the soft skills and having the English language abilities to work in a MNC environment is where we’ll see a lot of people fall short, because the dominant language is still English for publication in journals. There is also a huge shortage of people to work in private hospitals and help create western standards.” – Shanghai-based recruiter specialising in the healthcare sector

Welcome to the home of creative industries in the 21st Century The Chinese Government has identified culture as a “pillar industry” as part of its latest Five Year Plan. A report by the Beijing Government estimates that one new media company is established in the Chinese capital every day. The number of movie theatres in China has exploded over the past decade. According to Entgroup, China’s leading entertainment research provider, there were just 3,000 movie screens in operation in China in 2007. Today, there are more than 18,000. China is the second largest box office earner in the world for films, grossing an estimated RMB 17 billion in 2013, and is expected to be the world’s largest by 2020. Foreign interest and activity in Chinese media and entertainment sectors is strong. For example, major US and British production houses are now actively tailoring scripts to Chinese audiences, and a US$3.3 billion Universal Studios theme park in Beijing is expected to be completed by 2019. China’s print and media trade along with radio, TV and film industries accounted for more than RMB 2 trillion in revenue in 2012, with the Ministry of Culture projecting output to account for 5% of China’s GDP by 2016. Already recording 30% annual growth rates, China is now the second largest advertising market only behind the US, with 377,800 advertising agencies employing an estimated 2.18 million people in 2012. Online advertising via social and digital media is expected to be a prime area for future expansion and job creation. According to research by Entgroup, as of January 2014, a total of 47 Chinese “cultural enterprises” have conducted initial public offerings (IPOs), with many listing outside of China, indicating both the growth nature of the sector and its growing international profile.

What does industry say?

“There are currently more opportunities in gaming, new media and digital industry than in the traditional media, like TV, radio and music. Most people want to do gaming; that’s where the money is. For example, our previous graphic designer has gone to Tencent to do online graphic design.” – Leading media company based in Beijing

“There are lots of jobs out there. It’s quite active in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Shanghai is more commercial, whereas Guangzhou has a very interesting grass roots movement when it comes to areas like publishing, print and public art.” – Major media content creator

“There are things happening all over China. I just came back from Anhui where I saw an amazing public art project in a rural area.” – Major media content creator

“I would say that the current demand is definitely in CGI and in the digital space.” – Major media content creator

Rebalance China’s economy with clever design The Chinese government is investing in an unprecedented national policy effort to turbo-charge change in China’s success from the ubiquitous “Made in China” tag to a “Designed in China” future.

What does industry say?

“Most projects are not in 1st tier cities but in 2nd tier ones such as Hangzhou, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Shenzhen. There are quite a lot of projects in Tianjin where we built the exhibition centre last year.”

Industrial design has emerged as a rapidly growing profession in China from being nearly non-existent to an estimated 300,000 strong base of industrial designers.

– Leading design studio

“Interior design will be a promising job in the future…buildings that have already been established will need to be renovated in order to catch up with changing trends.”

The International Visual Communicators Association estimates there are around 5,600 animation companies in China, mostly located in Beijing, Changsha, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai and Wuxi.

– International architectural and design firm

“Interior design recruitment really is a challenge. Finding the people who have the creative thinking and the concept design is quite difficult.”

China’s animation industry revenues reached US$14 billion in 2013, having expanded by approximately 15% over the past three years. Animation exports were US$160 million in 2014.

– Leading architecture firm

Chinese online gaming companies, that draw heavily on designers, recorded RMB 66.2 billion in revenues during 2012 and are predicted to grow to RMB 97.8 billion in 2014.

By 2015, the number of Chinese PC online gamers will be 275 million, which equals 86% of the current population of the United States.

A recent report projects the value of design services have increased from RMB 22 billion in 2002 to over RMB 64 billion in 2015, with a positive employment outlook.
