CHANGE THE F U T URE WITH RESEARCH AND I N N O VAT I O N
We transform clever ideas and research discoveries into successful innovations to benefit society, the economy and future generations. Supporting entrepreneurs
We conduct research across a wide range of areas. We invest considerable resources in areas where we believe we can make the biggest difference, such as:
• Solar power (photovoltaics). We hold the world record for the conversion efficiency of a silicon solar cell, and we are home to the world’s fastest solar powered car.
• Clean drinking water. We created
MCIC Innovation Network
membrane filtration technology to filter water that is now used in taps around the world.
Since its grand opening in 2015, the Michael Crouch Innovation Centre has facilitated more than 35,000 engagements in a broad range of innovation learning events and programs. Everyone is welcome to find a better way at the MCIC. mcic.unsw.edu.au
• The bionic eye. We successfully trialled a bionic eye system that is a world first in neural stimulation and clarity of vision.
• HIV/AIDS. Since diagnosing Australia’s first case of HIV, we have been involved in the development of every existing antiretroviral HIV drug.
• The world’s largest computer. Using silicon, we are building the world’s largest supercomputer.

UNSW CANBERRA POSTGRADUATE COURSEWORK PROGRAMS Courses in Master by Coursework programs at UNSW Canberra are delivered through distance (online) and/or intensive delivery mode. International applicants may undertake these programs as offshore international students. Offshore international students are not eligible for an Australian student visa.
Distance Mode: Courses are available in the distance (online) delivery mode. There is no need for you to be present on the campus to complete the course. You are required to download the information, complete the work and upload your assessments or complete the
online tests as directed in the Course Outline. All coursework and forums are asynchronous; there is no need for you to be online at any specific point in time. If necessary, you can log in at the start of the session, download all the course material and only log back in again to submit assignments and complete any course tests. If you are able to be connected more regularly, you can participate in the online forums.
Intensive Delivery Mode (IDM): If
you choose to undertake IDM courses, you will attend the UNSW Canberra campus for a oneweek full-time period of face-to-face instruction. The IDM periods are usually at the start of each
session so you may be able to package and complete a number of IDMs in succession. On completion of this on-campus component, you would complete the rest of the coursework as detailed in the Course Outline. There is no need to remain at UNSW Canberra nor to be online at any specific point. After the IDM intensive week, you simply download the information and continue through the session as if you were in the Distance Mode. Throughout the session you may, if you wish and are available, participate in online forums with other students. International students are required to obtain visitors’ visas to Australia in order to attend IDM courses.

Contemporary armed conflicts have seen the employment of special operations forces on an unprecedented scale, yet special operations remains an understudied and often misunderstood instrument of military policy. The Master of Special Operations uniquely addresses this gap by offering students a combination of special operations focused core courses alongside a selection of electives addressing broader issues in strategy and security, providing the student both a focused view of the phenomenon of special operations and a broad understanding of their context. The Master of Special Operations is ideal for special operations
and other military personnel seeking to broaden their understanding of special operations beyond the tactical and operational skills and capabilities involved. The program also provides an excellent framework of reference for other government employees and contractors who require a good understanding of Special Operations. Postgraduate scholars seeking to develop a research competence in this field will also find a valuable foundation in the Master of Special Operations.
The Master of Strategy and Security is designed for postgraduate scholars, and foreign affairs, security and defence professionals who wish to gain a deeper and more advanced understanding of the factors shaping the global and Asia-Pacific security and strategic environments, and the complex policy challenges presented by the new security agenda. Because each student’s study choices are different, it’s impossible to provide a definitive cost of studying at UNSW. Here are a few things to consider when calculating your expected fees.
Fees are course-based
Fees for international students are set according to the course (subject) and not the program. The fees reflect the relative cost of delivering the course. For example, a science course is likely to cost more than an arts course. For that reason, your total tuition fees will vary depending on which courses you choose.
Fees vary each year
Fees for programs fluctuate from year to year. The tuition fees listed above are for students in 2017. The fees listed for 2018 are indicative only; these fees may change during the program. Actual fees for 2018 will be released in late 2017. student.unsw.edu.au/fees
Fees are charged based on the year of commencement
For example, if you start in Semester 2 (July) 2017, the fees for the first semester will be calculated at 2017 rates. Your second semester will be calculated at 2018 rates. If you are required to complete a course again, you will be charged at the rate applicable to the year you re-take the course.
Estimating your tuition fees
Estimates for each program are outlined in the Faculties and postgraduate programs section, on page 28. You can also calculate your own expected fees by referring to the relevant table above.
111
Coursework program fees
A coursework Masters program will require 48 units of credit (UOC) per year, a Graduate Diploma will require 36 or 48 UOC per year, while a Graduate Certificate requires 18 or 24 UOC per semester. Most courses (subjects) are 6 UOC. A typical postgraduate program will include courses from within the Faculty offering the degree. However, if you do choose courses from outside your Faculty, they will be charged at the rate set by that Faculty. As an example, the course Environmental Impact Assessment will be calculated using the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences rate, which is A$655 per UOC in 2017.

Graduate diplomas by research are not classified as research degrees and fees are calculated using the value of individual courses undertaken. For more information about the UNSW fees policy, including refund of fees and overpayments, visit: student.unsw.edu.au/fees-policyinternational-students
Other study-related costs
Some programs and courses have costs, which are additional to the tuition fees, for expenses like laboratory kits, equipment and field trips. Textbooks are not considered compulsory, but we recommend budgeting around A$1,000 per year for books. An estimate of your total costs (tuition and other study-related costs) will be shown on your Confirmation of Enrolment Form (CoE) that will be issued on acceptance of an offer of admission to UNSW.
Living costs vary depending on each student’s specific requirements. We estimate a single international student will need minimum A$20,000 per year to cover general living expenses. This doesn’t include the costs of large non-essential items like electrical equipment or a car. In addition, you will need at least A$2,000 when you arrive in Sydney to cover initial expenses such as a rental bond payment (security deposit), electricity, gas and telephone connection fees and basic furniture and household items. For more information, visit: www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/global/ live-in-australia/living-costs
Overseas student health cover
If you are in Australia on a student visa you will need to pay for health insurance through the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme and maintain insurance for the full duration of your visa. All international students must be covered by health insurance from the date they arrive in Australia until the date they depart, regardless of when they start or complete their program. It is your responsibility to ensure your health insurance policy matches your arrival and departure dates. The only exception is for students from Belgium, Norway and Sweden who are covered by CSN or Kammarkollegiet. These students will need to provide proof of official health insurance cover from their home government provider.
There are five registered providers of OSHC Medibank (UNSW’s preferred health cover provider), BUPA Australia Health, Worldcare, NIB OSHC and Australian Health Management. Medibank OSHC will pay benefits towards your medical and hospital treatment, medically necessary ambulance transport and most prescription medicines. Just be aware that there may be some exclusions for pre-existing conditions and you may have to serve a waiting period to receive certain services. Certain services are not covered by Medibank’s policies. These include optical, physiotherapy, dental and certain pharmaceuticals. If you want to be covered for these expenses, you will need to take out additional insurance.
