My name is Ann-Kathrin Bahr but everybody calls me AK. I am 28 years old and grew up in Germany, where I have been officially self-employed since August 2019, after building my Art Business for the past 5 years. I think it’s safe to say that I was always particular about everything creative I worked on. I take my own creativity very seriously. Even though I am not a very precise person in all aspects of life, when it comes to my art, I’m a perfectionist! As a child I did a lot of drawing, in my teenage years I moved on to digital art and web design and have always loved crafting in general. The actual beginning of my career as an Artist was a collage of 8 small paintings I did for my boyfriend, which turned into doing a lot of commission work for friends. After concentrating on developing my own style and theme I have started bringing together my passion for Art and Music. Hip Hop has not only been a big impact on me, but also on my whole generation. I think I am a good example of the reach that this genre has had globally. Growing up in Germany, I had to search the Internet for the newest songs and artists (especially artists from the south, which is the music I’ve always felt drawn to the most), because Radio Stations were mainly playing Pop and Rock. Just like Hip Hop, creating has always been a big factor in my life. To me it is the best way to relax and clear my mind. Connecting these two, I started painting Artists I am personally listening to and the ones who have influenced the music I like the most. Inspired by Rap and RnB, I work on a lot of portraits that focus on high detail with a realistic touch, to create art Hip Hop Heads can relate to. 8 Winter 2020
My paintings are my way of visually catching the essence of each Artist. The same way Musicians use their music to express emotions and create a vibe, I am using my art as a visual representation of that. It is amazing to see how Hip Hop related art has grown – just like the genre itself – and gotten more and more recognition. It has passed its reputation as ‘Fan Art’ and made it possible for artists like me to get more attention. I am very grateful for all the opportunities the Art Scene has given me so far. Not only did I get to meet some of my favorite Artists, but also have I learned a lot about how to succeed and that it takes more than just talent to build your own business. Instagram: akgotart

I absolutely love being a part of the art community. I love working with vibrant colors, experimenting with different art concepts and ideas and my preferred mediums are airbrush and acrylic. I’ve had no formal art education however, I grew up with a mother who is a graduate of California College of Arts and Crafts with a bachelors degree for fine arts in painting. When it was time to go to the toy store, the Art store was always an option and a preference. I guess it is safe to say some of that artistic ability was inherited. I grew up drawing and painting occasionally (mostly cartoon characters), but in 2012 I committed to filling the walls of a small studio space with various styles of paintings. The catalyst that sparked the more focused art wave in my life was a career ending, work related injury, that resulted in me having back surgery. The art helped me fight through major depression and ultimately gave me new goal to aspire towards. As artist, we’re often encouraged to find a niche or style and let that be our signature. However, I also believe in letting your inner being thrive and speak the language it is so inclined to. I let my art do that and I’ve learned to just go with it, so I paint whatever I’m feeling led to. I recently felt the nudge and had a vision to paint a hip hop series of various artists who have depth in their lyrics and or powerful stories behind the music they’ve created. I figured I should merge two things I love which is music and art. I started with Hip Hop and I imagine a lot more faces to come. Right now I have some of the fellas and the ladies of hip hop will soon follow. One of my favorite art quotes is, “Earth without art is just Eh” - believed to be stated by Demetri Martin. Whomever said it, I truly agree. Instagram: ashleireign_art

Hi, my name is bodh.io and I’m an amateur printmaker based in Canada. By ‘amateur printmaker’ I mean: Amateur - an enthusiast who pursues their work in the spirit of love, regardless of potential for fame, money, or career. Printmaker - a person who makes pictures or designs by printing them from specially prepared plates or blocks. As a lover of philosophy and hip-hop, you can expect this love to be reflected in the subject matter of my work. I enjoy the iterative process of printmaking and working from a reference image while adding my own unique style and flare, much like how hip-hop music iterates songs through the process of sampling. You can find my work pasted-up in public spaces or for sale on my website. website: https://www.bodh.io instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bodh.io/

Paink, a Melbourne based artist well known for his distinctive contemporary street art. With a graphic design background his artworks evolve from on screen to canvas. Known for his bold, innovative and provocative style, Paink enjoys working on large scale pieces with a strong eye for proportion and colour. His works range from murals, canvas and prints. Artist statement My style is street with a focus on realism, portraiture and proportion, which stems from my graphic design background. Each piece is influenced by my love of colour and street art. Colour enables me to expand on the detail in my art, as well as the diversity of application. My fascination of portraiture, the shapes and angles of the face, is the foundation of my style. My work is layered, in terms of technique and thought. Themed quotes, shapes and symbols are hidden in each piece to create intrigue and complexity, encouraging viewers to look beyond the surface. With a design background, my work evolves from on screen to canvas. The screen allows me to map out my work and build up layers prior to even touching a paint brush or spray can. This plays a fundamental role in my pieces. Spray paint, ink, pen, posca markers and acrylic are used to achieve the fine detail and layering of different mediums. There are no limitations to the mediums used. I enjoy exploring the effects of using a variety of mediums that I come across when creating a piece, whether it be house paint, pastels, resin, oil pens, gold leaf, pencil and more. www.painkartist.com Instagram: panik_artist @UNTAPPED HIP HOP 35

Will Gaskin AKA Skwaam who was born 1992 in South London first picked up a pencil in 1995 and bopped his head to Grandmaster Flash in 1997. With a fist full of pocket money he happened upon the Gorillaz’ debut and discovered the work of their artist Jamie Hewlett and the concept of marrying music and art as one vision. Since 2016 and his first introduction to digital creative tools, Skwaam has used his lifelong passion for these two pillars of culture to capture the lyrics, themes and ideas that flow through hip hop and create spectacular art in any medium from comic panels to painted portraiture. Now into his fourth year of celebrating his favourite musicians and genre he has already caught the attention of the likes of Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky, Tyler the Creator, SZA, Joey Bada$$, Jay Rock, EARTHGANG, JID to name a few. Having given personal pieces to Dreamvillians Wowgr8 and JID, Skwaam is continuing to draw his way into the heart og Hip Hop culture with the more and more imaginative and daring artwork he shares every week. I DON’T SEE COMPTON This was inspired by Kendrick’s “ To Pimp A Butterfly” My favourite Hip Hop album. Sonically, this album really resonated with me all the jazz and soul influences reminded me of the music my dad used to play for me as a child; coupled with some of the rawest lyricism I have ever heard this really affirmed that Kendrick Lamar was a cut above the rest with his craft. A despondent Kendrick looks out at you as he is being swarmed by red and blue butterflies-representing the Piru and Crips who populated his hood and had exposed him to a more sinful life, also they represent the police-whose brutality and treatment of the black man in America is a recurring theme throughout the album. I wanted the background to represent the dusty, earthy tones of the album, a blood spatter symbolizing that Kendrick was birthed from the bloody belly of the beast; where violence and death. The title of the piece was inspired by the short monologue at the end of the track “Complexion” where Kendrick bluntly compares Compton to the ‘Hell thats on Eath’. Kendrick is sick of his home still being this way, his hood still acting the same way, he tells us unapologetically about the tale of the good kid’s brushes with the various obstacles America has laid out in front of him.

THE FALL OFF This piece was inspired by Cole’s albums Forest Hills Drive and KOD. Cole sits atop his Forest Hills Drive family home as the flames of a broken society rage through the forest burning everything that was once serene and natural. The crown of Hip Hop elevates out of his hand and disintegrates, repires ending what he has spoken about numerous times-the powers of addiction; for clout, for drugs, for money, without thinking about the impact on the generation of people who regard rappers as their heroes and the general perception of black people simply being tatted up drug addicts. I feel the topics Cole has repeatedly talked about are reaching a boiling point and this album will be the explosive catalyst that will shine a brighter light on them.

IGOR! Inspired by my musical highlight of 2019, Tyler the Creator’s ‘IGOR’ an absolute masterpiece of an album. Since the first listen I haven’t been able to stop using IGOR as a main character in many different imagined stories inspired by the sounds of the album. Tyler as an artist has always been a very passionate creator, I started listening to him when he burst into the fray as a rude, edgy teenager, but only being 1 year younger than him I feel I have understood his growth as his career progressed. I believe that IGOR is Tyler at the height of his powers, that the sound he has always set out to create was truly perfected with this story of love and heartbreak, this man is showing us exactly how much a creative mind can achieve if they contastly believe in themselves. This larger than life character he has created is fascinating to me, and really reminds me of an invention of Jamie Hewlett’s mind so I have absorbed this album with the same facination I did with the Gorillaz’ debut album at 9 years old. In terms of creativity and pure imagination, this man really is my hero.

like between 3 and 5 dudes, and they performed well together with energy but I was unimpressed with their lyricism and production. As someone who has done a lot of contests I can say every contest has a constellation of criterion, a set of factors weighed a little differently by each set of judges. So maybe I thought Theez was a better MC than the crew that made it to the top 2 with Cam and Callig but I can see how the judges thought that the dynamic of a duo versus a group, each of which had lots of present fans, fit what they wanted for their final face-off. Even though Archer had just dropped his now signature Spiritgunner LP he finished the night with his previous LP Cocamania’s signature single “Sailor Moon”. Kasai, Speech and I think CJ Westley and perhaps Nicklaus Gray (who I definitely had not met yet) all went and like many of us trying to survive the day has me thinking could another renaissance be birthed right here in this county that tends to get a bad rep. I came to this realization back when Maya Huyana had a listening party for her album . Seeing a group of artists coming together to support each other one could see the ie hip hop is a tight knit community there were a few times 50 Spring 2019
Every crew talks about treating the success of one like the success of all. Every group talks about how you need to be selfless and form like Voltron and be fiercely loyal and all this mess. Relatively few execute. It’s simple but it takes humility and clarity of perspective. Over Everything showed me that night in that simple 3 and a half minute moment that they had what it takes on many levels that lots of folks were not really aware of. Formed in 2013 from the remnants of HVE, and Dying Breed, one of the reasons I wrote this piece instead of just reviewing inside voices is that in 2018 the rest of the crew started to become undeniable to me and that night at the Cali 2 NY contest gave me a little window as to how the crew and its well-oiled machinery are indispensable to Archer’s success as well. It actually made so much sense to me when Kasai explained that OE’s a supergroup in that way: who among us hasn’t thought “if I get the most dedicated and talented people from each constellation of crews; we could be the all-stars…” and these guys actually did it. Calligraphy was not part of the original recordings of the songs he was doing with Cam at the contest but he’s also DJed for Cam countless times as they co-
hosted BricktoyaFace’s Common Ground events so their chemistry is seamless. Callig performed deftly and with style but ultimately he’s a smart humble artist who knows when to play himself up and down. Archer performed with intensity and gusto without being overly corny or using an immediate emotional life situation to sentimentally blackmail the judges in order to win- he just delivered.
I was not shocked when Callig and Cam beat the

“THEY ‘DON’T MAKE SHIT LIKE THIS / LOOKINLIKE DENZEL IN THE FLICKS” Nintendo-themed “I Play Smash” hint that he is an idiosyncratic genius who will deploy his intense talents towards interesting mental whims. Jay Kasai has been referred to as the I.E.’s “Nolan” as he runs a lot of media logistics for the group: videos, photography, audio recording, and beyond. Westley seems to be an emergent chef and videographer in addition to being a very solid MC consistently dropping singles and music videos of a high caliber. Westley will mindfuck you with how deep and personal he gets on a guest 16. In fact, Westley being such a solid MC is another aspect of the collective’s ridiculous potency: you can’t actually point out a flaw in the raps of any given member of O.E., you’d have to nitpick pretty hard to actually make your argument as to why any of them are weaker than the other on the mic.
And Cam the Arquero wasn’t done with 2018.
He dropped El Guapo in the summer of 2018. I wasn’t blown away by Guapo on my first couple listens, probably because Gunner set such a high bar but the album grows on me. I find when I evaluate each song its own basis as opposed to trying to hear Guapo as a piece I appreciate the songs more as it seems to be a bit of a clearing-house 52 Winter 2020
compilation of recent works and b-sides that didn’t quite make it onto Gunner and other projects.
Around this time rumblings of the latest Kasai tape
started to emerge- and if you pay attention he’s been regularly dropping solid videos as well. To the layman, the rest of the crew is mainly heard on BarGawds but I’ve peeped CJ Westley’s YouTube vids, Tru Speech’s records, and the Kasai Tape volumes and they’re all exceptional artists. The way they are all talented and know how to form like a team to accomplish certain things reminds me of East LA’s EOTR Network- perhaps they’re one of the only I.E. circles in the modern era that is a comparably formidable unit if we’re being honest. It’s enjoyable to see the OE formula evolve- to see Nabeyin and Kasai become staples of their orbit’s music as Archer and Leotus have been. And they’re not idle in between music. “Midnight Run” was originally a

This kind of work being put in at multiple levels and angles is part of why the coming rise and coalescence of this group is becoming harder to deny. Now in the Spring of 2019, Archer has re-emerged with inside voices his most simple yet most ambitious project yet; to hear the promotional campaign interviews tell it, the veneer of emotional distance was intentionally stripped away to express the consciousness of a troubled young man. The album’s a quiet triumph in many ways but one of which is how it balances Nabeyin and As someone who does indie hip-hop too, the most logical explanation for that somewhat apparent but gradually diminishing gap in visibility is that Archer puts in the social legwork of engaging in the I.E. independent artist community that is necessary to be as visible as he is. For example, early in 2019 he put on his Alive & Kickin’ Festival’s 4th edition at San Bernardino’s premier festival venue the National Orange Show Center or the NOS as its commonly referred to in the region. The festival was dope – there was two stages (full disclosure I performed on the secondary stage with Da Rap Nerd) and a bar and lots of familiar faces with booths. I was doing a little bit of coverage with Untapped magazine for an upcoming documentary project. I saw various OE associates perform – Dryden, Sincere, Nicklaus Gray (this was my first time meeting him), with OhGoshLeotus playing the drums and Calligraphy running sound. It was a family affair, the energy was palpable and fraternal. Chatting with Archer backstage he said he was just paying forward the opportunity for a platform he was given by folks like Lesa J and Noa James of BricktoyaFace and I feel like that’s an aspect of Archer’s thinking that isn’t often highlighted. 54 Winter 2020
OhGoshLeotus production – Nabeyin produced the boom-bap tinged interludes and Leotus the modern hip-hop pop and neo-soul songs; they complement eachother like PB&J.
