II.
Background The mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is to work for the protection of all human rights for all people by helping to empower them as well as assisting those responsible for upholding their rights. In the Cambodia Country Office, OHCHR implements four core programmes which seek to contribute in fulfilling its mandate of protection and promotion of human rights. These are: Rule of Law, Economic and Social Rights, Prison Reform Support, Civil Society and Fundamental Freedoms. The Office’s Communications Unit plays a significant support role to all these programmes in raising public awareness and understanding of human rights through widespread information dissemination, education and advocacy. Another integral role of the Communications Unit is to promote the work of the office for strengthened partnerships and recognition of collective efforts by partner institutions. To ensure that human rights are promoted and understood, OHCHR in Cambodia adapts strategic communication tools and approaches for diverse audiences with various information needs. This includes developing public information campaigns, disseminating publications and providing support to libraries, obtaining media mileage and maintaining strong press relations, and maintaining a bilingual website and social media accounts.
III. Duties and Responsibilities The intern will provide support to the Communications Unit by: 1. Compiling news clippings of human rights stories 2. Assisting the translation team to/from Khmer/English 3. Assisting in the development of media releases and stories for the website 4. Assisting in the editing and reviewing of publications and other information materials 5. Helping to organize events 6. Assisting in the management of the resource centre 7. Adding content for and updating the new website 8. Creating content for and managing posts for the social media sites (Facebook and Twitter) 9. Scanning and organizing hard copy materials for electronic storage 10. Assisting the Communications Unit in administrative work and other activities as assigned. IV. Desired Qualifications of the Intern 1. University student or recent graduate (please see the eligibility self-check table), preferably in the field of communications (social media, digital, or media communications) or international language studies 2. Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, social media sites – knowledge of Lightroom or Photoshop, Hootsuite, and social media analytics is also beneficial) 3. Strong Khmer and English language skills, both written and oral 4. Ability to work in a team 5. Willingness to learn new things 6. Familiarity with the UN system and development trends in the country and the region an asset

You must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); OR (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); OR (c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in 1 (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. 2. If selected, you will be able to provide a medical certificate stating that you are in good health and a letter attesting to your enrolment in one of the programmes stated in 1 above.
