fter he’s up off one knee, you’ve bought your first bridal magazine, subscribed to a half dozen wedding blogs and thought about setting a date, what’s next? The dress? A honeymoon somewhere exotic? Or how about 200 hand knitted heart favours that your guests are sure to treasure forever?
STOP RIGHT THERE. Every wedding will have a budget and whether large or small, it’s up to you to spend it wisely. After a venue, a pretty frock and something good to eat, I’d say that a quality photographer should be right at the top of your shopping list. As a professional wedding blogger, I receive a lot of real wedding submissions and believe me, there is a big difference between a just-ok photographer and a really good one. A bad photographer? Let’s not even go there. But why are good wedding photographs so important anyway? Aren’t your memories of the big day enough? The reality is, wedding photographs are your memories. Crack open your album and your big day will all come flooding back. For better or for worse. If done right, they’re also memories that you can share – with future children, grandchildren, family and friends. You want your images to be as beautiful as the celebration itself. So, that friend who’s just keen with a camera? Ask him to take some fun shots of the party instead and book the best professional that your budget will allow. You’ll be so glad that you did. Now that’s clicked, where to start?
START EARLY It’s simple: the best get booked, and fast. If there’s a photographer whose work you already know that you love, you want to be securing their services as soon as the date is saved. If you do miss out, then ask them to recommend a trusted industry colleague with a similar style.
NARROW YOUR OPTIONS If you’ve no idea where to begin, wedding blogs like www.bridesupnorth. co.uk and personal recommendations are your best bet. Decide what look you like, then search out the photographers who deliver consistently within that style. Ask online and across social media platforms for reviews and honest commentary.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK Once you think you’ve found your man (or woman), request to see a variety of examples of their work. Rather than a load of great photos from lots of different days, you should be looking for a few excellently captured complete weddings. It’s relatively easy to get one lucky shot, but a whole day’s worth takes real skill. While you are there, check out your options for aftercare and albums and that you like your photographer’s editing style and presentation choices.
BUDGET FOR THE BEST It’s a big ballpark, and very dependant on location, coverage and experience, but a photographer at the top of their game usually costs between £1,000 and £2,500. When discussing prices, check what the total figure covers to avoid any nasty surprises. How long will the photographer be there on the day? Does the price include an album? What about digital images and who will own the copyright to the photographs? What sort of timescales does the photographer work to and how soon after the wedding will you see your proofs?
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT I’d recommend an engagement shoot to everyone. Even if you’re already a pro in front of the camera, you can practice your make up, get to know your photographer better and check that you get on. If you’re a little more hesitant in front of a lens, a warm up shoot can really help to relieve pre wedding nerves and instil confidence.
SMILE FOR THE BIRDIE Once the big day arrives, remember to relax. You’ve done your research and paid a fair price. Trust that your photographer will do a good job and let them get on with it. Strike a pose!

THE PROPOSAL Tony and I met in a bar in Newcastle on separate nights out with friends; we struck up a conversation and agreed to meet again. We dated for a year then lived together for 18 months before he proposed. Tony took me to Silk Room champagne bar and restaurant in Newcastle where we had a delicious dinner and some bubbly. It was a lovely romantic evening. After our meal, Tony got up and came to my side of the table, got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife right there in the restaurant, producing a beautiful traditional yellow gold solitaire ring! I was in total shock – we had only recently bought our first home together after renting together in the early days - how he had managed to save up for the ring without my knowing still surprises me!
THE DRESS After a few disappointing trips to bridal shops, seeing hundreds of strapless dresses that all looked the same, a friend recommended Mia Sposa. I went along on my lunch break from work, on my own, expecting just to get a few ideas. The owner, Joy, took me under her wing and helped me to find the perfect dress. I spotted this Justin Alexander gown and remembered seeing it online and thinking it was a pipedream well out of my budget. I tried it on without looking at the price, and as fate would have it, it was just within my range, fitted beautifully, and made me well up with happy tears! I loved the intricate detail of the lace, with the classic simplicity of the silhouette. The dropped waist flattered me, and the straps meant I knew I would be comfortable on the big day. I couldn’t imagine wearing any other dress on my wedding day.
THE VENUE We chose The Black Horse, Beamish to hold our reception venue. It is a gorgeous renovated cottage gastropub set in beautiful countryside, and we knew that it would have just the right vibe for our wedding.
THE RECEPTION We got engaged in October 2012 and wanted to aim to get married the following summer... on picking a date, Saturday 1st June stood out. A June wedding seemed traditional and “right” to me, in fact we ended up choosing many traditional elements for our wedding. This gave us 7 months to plan! We loved planning our wedding; we had lots of ideas, from our tea towel wedding invitations, to our relaxed countryside reception venue. I

love being creative and so decided early on to make our wedding cake and wedding favours – people thought I was mad when I told them I was making a 4-tier, deep fruit cake with sugar roses and love bird topper (and that I had never, ever iced a cake before!) but it all came together in the days before the wedding with a little help from my amazing bridesmaids. I wanted our wedding to feel personal to us and to have some homemade touches – my mum made 50 metres of bunting for us, and we grew our own wheatgrass table centrepieces, in pots from Ikea that resembled the lace neckline of my dress – a very happy coincidence!
THE PHOTOGRAPHY We realised early on that we needed a photographer that was going to understand the atmosphere we wanted on our wedding day and wanted someone that we were going to get along with! We ended up talking to quite a few photographers, but either found that their style was too pushy (one wanted to set all of the timings for the day, including when and where I put my dress on!) or that we felt we’d be part of some wedding photography production line, and our wedding definitely wasn’t cookie cutter! We met Claire from Burns Rowatt Photography at a wedding fair and immediately loved her calm, collected style. We fell in love with the gorgeous Queensberry albums and the style of Claire’s photography was modern and quirky, but classic and beautiful. We went on a pre-wedding photo shoot which was hugely helpful for two camera shy folks like us – she put us at ease and we got some lovely shots from the day, and it also reassured us in advance of the big day. It felt after this photoshoot that some of the pressure had been lifted, I knew I was going to be able to relax more on the day and trust that she would get ‘the shots’. We love the photos from our wedding day and would highly recommend Claire to any of my friends and family – she has guided us through the process professionally and has been a pleasure to deal with. We couldn’t be happier with the end result.
THE HONEYMOON We honeymooned in sunny Mexico, at Riviera Maya. We left two days after the wedding, which was the perfect time for us to let all the excitement of the wedding sink in, and spent a relaxing couple of weeks as a brand new husband and wife, planning the future and having fun together. We had some amazing experiences, including swimming with dolphins and manatees in the Caribbean Sea, and visiting ancient Mayan ruins.

THE PROPOSAL We were set up on a blind date by friends in January 2010. Steve proposed in August 2011 after cooking a beautiful meal for us.
THE DRESS The dress was simple and petite, which suited my shape. I loved the fabric, and with the full length veil with embroidered bows it was the perfect combination - I truly had a teary moment when I tried them both on.
WEDDING PLANNING I started the wedding planning process by collecting a pallet of the colours I wanted using embroidery threads. These were then given to the florist, cake supplier, stationery consultant, bridal dress shop and bridesmaids. It made ensuring the colours were all just right so much easier and kept me focused throughout.
STATIONERY This was one of the most important factors which started the ball rolling for the overall style of the wedding. We wanted to have an 'English country garden' feel and use very particular colours - pale pink, green and purple. From the outset Penrose Stationery were able to portray this perfectly in the Save the Dates and Invites. They specialise in bespoke stationery so all the artwork was created specifically for us, including a 1930's style postcard invite of the actual Church we got married in. On the day, the order of service, menus, name cards, and table plan looked amazing. Every last detail was thought of and it looked very high quality. It was such a load off our minds to have the whole stationery taken care of because it is quite a time consuming job and easy to underestimate.

FLOWERS The brief for the florist was a romantic country garden wedding and the flowers should look effortless, as if they had just been collected from our garden. Each bridesmaid’s bouquet was slightly different using their individual colour.
THE VENUE The Morritt Arms has a lot of memories for me having been there many times as a child. It also was the perfect setting for the country wedding we wanted. I loved the garden as flowers were a big part of the day.
PHOTOGRAPHY We met Fyzal Photography at a wedding fair and knew instantly that we wanted them to capture our day. It was so refreshing to see something truly different. When we started the wedding planning process we didn’t really have any ideas about a photographer or anything to compare with, which is why we were so lucky to find Fyzal and Dawn, as we could have ended up with something quite ordinary. It was a wonderful experience having our day captured by such a talented photographer. The wedding album is incredible. I love showing it to people and looking through to remember our day. I still feel tingles when I look through it! I feel we were very lucky to have such a good photographer and would recommend Fyzal to anyone. I would advise other brides to make sure you are happy with your photographer as this is what you’re left with when the day is all over.
HONEYMOON We went for a week in a holiday cottage on the Northumberland coast and a simple but romantic getaway.

THE PROPOSAL We met on our first day in halls of residence at Sheffield Hallam University. After cleaning the kitchen, I was horrified to find a freshly hungover newcomer sat with no shoes on the kitchen counter. Instead of the usual welcome, I was less than friendly in telling him to remove thus feet from the clean counter. Little did I know, these would be the feet that eventually I would grow to love. After 8 years together Stuart proposed in bed after watching a muppets Christmas carol. No kneeling was involved, however he used his finger to write the proposal on my back! After several frustrated guesses, Stuart eventually pulled the perfect ring from under his pillow. I couldn't believe he had picked it out himself, it was dainty and delicate and more than I could have hoped for. Before I accepted, I made sure that he had asked my dad's permission and unknown to me, he had asked the previous night.
THE DRESS After many dress disasters I finally found a shop which seemed to listen to what I wanted and understood what I would look good in. The friendly staff at wild at hearts picked out my perfect dress that fit like a glove and made me feel like a fairy tale princess.
THE RECEPTION From the day Stuart proposed I knew exactly what I wanted! A shabby chic, Cath Kidston style wedding which was laid back and fun! I collected bits and bobs from magazines and created a scrap book then my twin sister created a page on Pinterest and I was hooked! I loved getting inspiration and cheap DIY ideas that would help me achieve my dream wedding. My army of devoted friends and family listened to all my eccentric ideas and helped me collect and decorate jars. My best friend Nat made endless amounts of bunting and our devoted friend Fliss turned a plain ivory cake into a masterpiece! My Mum and Aunty collected hundreds of petals and painstakingly dried them to make confetti. Other DIY projects included pink straws, homemade fans, paper chains, picnic baskets and puppets! All the extra bits and bobs made the day a great success and a truly memorable day. We saved money by buying in our own wine and making our own favours and decorations. 68

THE PHOTOGRAPHY A close friend recommended GASP Photography and after meeting Jade and Nicky I fell in love. I was bewitched by her intimate and quirky photos and knew I had found our perfect match. After hearing so many horror stories about awful photographers, finding a laid back but brilliant photographer was essential. As we are not the most serious or romantic couple, I was quite anxious about our pre wedding shoot but I can honestly say we had a blast! It put us both at ease and I left feeling excited and knew we had made the right choice. When the big day arrived GASP Photography were like part of the family. They helped my dad with his button hole and me into my dress! One of the great things about the day was being allowed to be ourselves whether it involved the groom smearing my face with ice cream or us being 'creative' with a knight in shining armour, it was just great fun! GASP Photography made our guests feel at ease and were patient and friendly throughout. They really captured our personalities and we will treasure the photos forever.
THE HONEYMOON We spent two glorious weeks at the beautiful El Dorado SeaSide Suites in Mexico where we relaxed and drank numerous delicious cocktails!

Choosing the right partner is essential to make your special day truly memorable. Unveiled speaks to Laura and Will, who met Auckland Castle’s wedding team and fell instantly in love and find out why it’s turning into such a magical partnership… Words: Linda Britton Photography: Sean Elliott Photography
W
hen Laura Etheridge and Will Elsender decided on a whim to visit Auckland Castle, they weren’t planning to get married in a castle or even have a church wedding. It was just one of a long list of venues which included barns, hotels and standard wedding venues. But then they walked through the door of St Peter’s Chapel, the private chapel at Auckland Castle and the rest was history. “We just looked at each other and it felt perfect,” explains Laura. “But what really sealed the deal for us was when we meet Rebecca Coates, the general manager, as she was so lovely and enthusiastic and had so many amazing ideas. We just knew she would help us create a really special day.” Since their first visit to Auckland Castle, experienced wedding organiser Kelly Smith has joined to head up the wedding and events team at Auckland. Kelly has an impressive history, having helped launch the weddings
offer at Wynyard and running the team there for five years. Now she is in the middle of organising her own wedding next year which she says helps enormously with knowing what the couple need and how they feel. “I can really empathise with Laura and Will because I am at the same stage with planning my own wedding,” she says. “I want them to enjoy planning their big day and enjoy making it truly unique to them. They are a lovely couple with lots of great ideas and it’s a real honour to be part of their special day.” Laura and Will have been together six and a half years and are getting married on the 26th July next year. Planning is already underway and they have just finalised the wedding tasting with the Auckland team. “The great thing about Auckland is that anything is possible,” says Laura. “They don’t say no, they say how can we make that work.
With the food tasting and putting together a wedding menu, we could choose anything we wanted, we’ve even got fish finger sandwiches for the guests, which we love and which is very, very us.” “The beauty about Auckland Castle is that it is completely unique,” explains Kelly. “So unlike other wedding venues, where it can be one size fits all and about choosing a package, with us everything is bespoke and unique to the couple. We don’t do packages, we just find out what they like and create something especially for them.” “Planning a wedding with Kelly and Rebecca is just so much fun,” adds Laura. “It’s just like sitting down with friends and they get as enthusiastic as we do. We know we’re going to have a really special day because of them and we look forward to every part of the preparations and planning the big day with them.”

arah & Scott’s recent wedding at Solberge Hall was always going to be a picture perfect affair. As owner of Limelight Photo Booth Hire, Sarah had gathered inspiration over the years from the many weddings she has attended with her booths. Sarah says: “I borrowed a lot of ideas, such as the bridesmaid dresses which I’d seen at a wedding, and the hog roast – that was a must for my day!” Working in the industry meant Sarah had made some invaluable contacts when it came to her own special day, and had the advantage of getting to know their style and personalities naturally, instead of as a potential client. “I chose my photographer, Claire of Burns Rowatt Photography, after working at wedding fayres with her. She was so nice and approachable, I didn’t feel pressured into anything. “I also used Lucy from Party On Balloon Hire, she provided the candy buffet and chair covers. She’s such a great character, always putting a smile on people’s faces.” Yet despite her experience and familiarity with all things wedding-related, Sarah cannot deny that it felt strange to be on the other side of the camera lens, and of course her own photobooth played a significant part of the day despite Sarah not being the one in control of the photos on this occasion. As well as getting her own photo guest book and disc full of fabulous photos from the booth, Sarah had the fantastic idea of using photo frames as favours.“Every guest was given a photo frame which images from the booth could be taken home in. I loved that idea – every friend I visit has a framed photo from the day, which is so nice to see.” And for those brides who don’t work in the industry who are worried they may not have the same head start when it comes to planning their own wedding, then fear not – Sarah feels her line of work actually made the planning of her day more difficult. “I’m not a great planner anyway, but spending my own time working on a wedding when my working day consisted of weddings, it was quite a chore. Thank God for my friends, without them I don’t think it would have been what it was. They kept me in shape and I am very lucky to have the girls!” 75

The elegant Drawing Room can accommodate up to forty guests and opens onto the stepped terrace overlooking the grand main lawn. The impressive Edwardian Suite accommodates up to one hundred and fifty guests in a unique room characterised by its huge arched glass ceiling, giving a bright garden feeling to afternoon receptions. Civil ceremonies can also be held in both rooms.
DINING The food at your reception is of the utmost importance; at Headlam great care is taken to ensure the quality remains the same whether dining for two in the restaurant or a full house in the Edwardian Suite. We work exclusively with Simply Bows & Chair Covers to provide chair covers, linen and napkins. The choice of linen and colour of sashes etc. is chosen by the couple. We allow the couples to choose their own suppliers for everything else including flowers, cake and music providers. We believe this is an important element as it allows the couple to express their own taste and have control of their own wedding style and budget. We do however, have a number of suppliers that we use regularly to help with dressing the castle for private events and for whom we are happy to make recommendations based on the excellent service that they provide. A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO I MET A GORGEOUS, BUBBLY BRIDE WHO HAD SOME AMAZING IDEAS FOR HER WEDDING MAKE-UP...
S
he absolutely loves make-up and came prepared with some eyelashes and a quad lip palette from Illamasqua. After doing some research on Pinterest Verity sent me a link to her Pinterest board so I could get some ideas before we met. The key looks that stood out were “vintage inspired eye make-up” with a mixture of modern looks of strong lips in particular she liked the “ombre lips”. Ombre lips being a two if not three tone colour effect on the lips. The key look to the make-up was to make sure the skin was as flawless as possible before I applied the make-up on her eyes and lips.
HOW TO CREATE THE EYE MAKE-UP Keep the eye make-up simple in colour by using only nudes and beige colours. To add more definition to the eyes I used a traditional black khol pencil first along the eyelash line before I applied the gel eyeliner over the top. Apply mascara on first before the false eyelashes. HOW TO CREATE THE OMBRE LIPS
To create the look you can use two, three or even four colours. The look can take some time to create but once its achieved it looks striking. Start by using the darker colour first on the outer part of the lips and keep adding the next shade lighter and then the next shade lighter to give you the hue of colours.

Yet it isn’t just brides-to-be that want to look their best, with male clients becoming more prevalent than ever before. Tracy

We’ve been gearing up for our very first wedding fayres and our nerves were more than a little tattered as we prepared to mingle with the big players on the wedding circuit. ames Calvert & his wife Rachel are a well recognised part of the North East wedding industry, having run the VW wedding transport business Lovedubcars Ltd for a number of years. Together with friends & neighbours Rachel & Peter Walton who have a history in farming, running a campsite & catering, the team have established what they consider to be the perfect wedding venue, TipiChic. Their campsite on the edge of Darlington is transformed, with giant tipis at the end of the quaint field, heated as required, lit beautifully and romantically and able to hold as many guests as you may wish. “Need more room for extra guests,” James told us, “add another tipi. Each one can hold around 70 guests and we simply link them together”. The team take care of every detail, from comfortable flooring and dance floor, to the beautifully lit stone pathway leading to the tipis. A newly created male & female toilet area is also onsite. Rachel Walton explained how her history of catering will play an integral part in TipiChic: “My husband’s family were pig farmers for many years so a hog roast of any size wouldn’t be a problem for us”. Barbecues and hot or cold buffets are also on the menu, so all tastes are catered for. “Our drinks menu will be what people would hope for when they attend a wedding”, James told us, “There’s nothing worse than attending a wedding and taking out a mortgage to get a round of drinks in, we will have pub prices at the bar, nothing excessive,
everything reasonable.” And with the bar automatically included in the hire of the tipis, there’s no excuse not to take full advantage! In the event of rain, the wedding would be held inside a waterproof Nordic tipi, a structure that is designed and built to withstand Nordic winters. And the fun doesn’t end when the festivities are over. James explains: “When the party is over the bride and groom don’t have to find their way home, and neither do their guests. Glamping is a big deal right now and that’s what we are also offering. Large bell tents run along each side of the field, each with a double bed, mirror, clothes rail, comfortable rugs and lighting; it’s less of a campsite and more of an outdoor hotel. In the morning the couple and guests can get up, take a shower at the site and head back to the tipis for a full English”. Another of TipiChic’s unique concepts is that all of their structures can be relocated if they will fit in your garden, the team will gladly set it up there, or any location that has meaning to the bride and groom. James sums up the ethos of TipiChic perfectly: “For me, it’s not about formal, it’s about fun. Having a great time on your wedding day is the thing that everyone will remember, we know we can certainly bring that, and do it at a fraction of the price of a hotel”. THE PROPOSAL Mike wrote his proposal on a steamed up mirror in our bathroom on our first trip to Las Vegas in 2008, so it seemed only right to go back there to seal the deal. We thought about getting married straight away, before we came home, but in retrospect it was a good excuse for a return trip!
THE DRESS Getting the dream dress came down to an incredible stroke of luck. Manda found the one she really liked on the internet. She was browsing eBay one day and there it was - brand new with tags and the right size! She put a bid in whilst we were having a drink after a long day wedding ring shopping in York and to our surprise she won. It cost next to nothing compared to the RRP - we couldn't believe it and it fit like a dream!
THE VENUE We got married in The Special Memory Chapel Drive-Thru, Las Vegas. It was quick, simple, fun and everything we wanted - we even got a novelty 'Just Wed' license plate! Our first night as husband and wife was in the famous MGM Grand Hotel on Las Vegas Boulevard. We heard about the '$20 sandwich' where by upon check-in you slip a $20 note to the desk clerk and kindly ask for a possible complimentary upgrade and luckily for us it worked!! It may have helped due to the fact we were both wearing Bride and Groom mesh caps (black and pink). We originally booked a standard room and got upgraded to a brand new renovated strip view in the Grand Tower.
THE RECEPTION The reception was held at The Black Lion, Thirsk, after we returned to the UK. Because the ceremony was in Vegas, we decided to continue the casino theme - lots of black, red and white. Mike designed the playing card inspired invitations and even the cake followed the theme!
THE PHOTOGRAPHY We were lucky enough to be accompanied in Vegas by the super talented Jade and Nicky from GASP Photography. We thought it was important to have some truly awesome photos of our day, and we'd seen the girls’ work and loved their style so it was a no-brainer. Having them with us throughout the day was amazing – we loved taking part in the shoot, especially along the Strip in the middle of the afternoon. Another favourite location was the underground car park of the Cosmopolitan Hotel; on each of the five levels there are commissioned graffiti/street art pieces from artists such as Shephard Fairey (one of Mike's favourite artists) - so he was a little giddy to see the artwork in the flesh, and to have them feature in our finished album!
