Thanks to all of you that came along. We are really proud to announce that we will be hosting events at both Slaley Hall and Gisborough Hall in early 2015. We spoke to the incredibly talented Tony Mentel, Head Designer for Justin Alexander, to get the inside track on all things bridal.

W

e imagine your life must be incredibly busy. Tell us about a day in the life of Tony Mentel. I travel a lot for my job, whether it’s for research, meeting our manufacturers, meeting with retailers or for a trade fair. There is no typical day, which is what makes my life so interesting. When did you first know that you were going to be a designer? I come from a fashion family, my grandparents were tailors and my auntie and uncle were belt manufacturers in London. I was surrounded by it growing up and always had a fascination for the craft of making things. But I decided at the age of 18 to start studying fashion. With the world at your feet, where do you like to escape in your spare time? I am lucky to live right on the sea in Brighton, UK, so in my free time, I like to walk out of my front door and sit on the beach. Another fun place to escape to is Bali, now that’s my idea of paradise. What did you think you were going to be when you grew up? I admired my uncle greatly and he was a lawyer, so as a kid I wanted to follow in his footsteps. What inspires you personally and how does this influence your designs? My travels, art exhibitions, museums, film, and the women I meet inspire me.

My biggest inspiration is the women I meet. I ask them about their daily life and what their dream dress would look like. This is one of the biggest reasons why I am able to create gowns that work on real women.

Do you have a favourite of all of your dress designs? Every season I have favourites, but 8530 is probably my all time favourite, as it's such a simple Sabrina neckline gown. And I love that it transforms differently on all women who wear it. This gown doesn’t date and it makes women shine. What do you think makes your dresses as popular as they are? I make dresses for real women and I understand how they want to look and feel. I also build in comfortable yet body sculpting corsetry into the dresses to help make a woman's body look more feminine.

Which celebrity would be your modern day muse? Cate Blanchett as she is chic, timeless and real. The 2015 collection looks absolutely stunning. What is the process for putting a new collection together? Lots of research goes into developing the collection. We don’t start sketching the new collection until we’ve researched everything from new fabrics to what silhouettes we want to develop. Once the first prototypes are complete we then work on altering, changing, and finishing the dresses. The final step is a big meeting with the whole team and deciding which of 42

the dresses are need for the upcoming season. If you could give a Bride one piece of advice to help her nail her wedding day look, what would it be? Look like you, choose a dress that complements who you are. You don't want to look like you have a costume on. Just be yourself and create a wedding look that you are comfortable with. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Seeing brides and mothers cry with joy once they’ve found their dress is the most rewarding part of my job. There’s nothing like knowing that you made someone look and feel the most beautiful they’ve ever felt. UNVEILEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

I also love working with our retailers and knowing that our collection has helped them make their shop a success. What would you say is your proudest achievement to date, personally and professionally? The way Justin Alexander has grown from a new collection into one of the most successful. It’s been a huge team effort from the entire company but I am proud to have been part of it for the past 10 years. Finally, with success around the globe, what is next for Justin Alexander? We will continue to listen to our brides and retailers in order to keep making lots of women happy!

Mobeus have seen a recent comeback of rose gold and yellow gold wedding jewellery requests, but the ever popular white gold is still the main contender for ladies when it comes to the all-important bands and palladium for men. The classic solitaire diamond remains the most requested stone.

Men will usually opt for plain wedding bands, however Mobeus have become experts at creating any ideas, which couples aproach them with. They can use letters, raoman numerals and different polishing techiques to bring ideas to life.

We met at The Black Bull in Yarm. Our eyes met and I decided to go and speak to Michael. We exchanged numbers, went on a date the following week and the rest, as they say, is history.

I had a few ideas of the style of dress I wanted. However, after visiting a number of bridal boutiques, I couldn’t find ‘the one’. After purchasing my bridesmaid dresses at JoanneKay bridal in Stokesley I decided to book an appointment with them to look at their bridal range.

We were together for 5 years when Michael proposed in the beautiful Scottish Borders of Northumberland at the Tillmouth Park Hotel. He asked me to go for a walk around the gardens and we came to a beautiful stone alcove. When I turned he was on one knee holding a ring, asking me to be with him for the rest of his life. It was magical and I instantly said yes!

I tried on a few gowns, then Joanne, one of the owners, pulled out a gorgeous vintage style white lace dress and I instantly fell in love with it. As soon as I tried it on I felt like Grace Kelly! It was the one. Joanne and Kay, the owners, made me feel like a true VIP.

the photography Michael and I wanted our photographs to be timeless, romantic and classic so when we looked back on them in years to come, they wouldn’t look dated. We searched and talked to every photographer in our area but we couldn’t find what we really wanted. I remember the time Michael barged in the house saying he found the ‘one’ and they had our wedding date free – Fyzal, from Fyzal Photography.

the venue Lartington Hall had it all. It was elegant and beautiful, with tons of space for us to have a big band in the evening, and areas for the guests to use. Most of my friends came from York, so it was important that they could stay at the hall. We also wanted a venue with exclusive use too, so that we felt the place was truly ours for the day. The owner’s of Lartington Hall, John and Shona were brilliant; friendly, accommodating and patient. We were very aware of how lucky we were with finding Lartington Hall.

the proposal We met at work and were together for three years before Serge proposed. He proposed at Fountains Abbey, Ripon. It was very romantic.

the dress I visited Miranda Marie Bridal Boutique in Yarm with my Mum and Sister. I was very nervous as I had no idea what to expect when I put on a big white dress for the first time. My sister and I pulled out a few dresses of varying styles just to get an idea of what I liked. Within an hour we had picked my wedding dress as well as the bridesmaid dresses! Â I tried on maybe four before I put mine on. I immediately whispered to Miranda that I loved it. Thank goodness my Mum and Sister loved it too. It had everything that I thought I wanted in a dress. When the veil went on I was in love!

I THOUGHT I WANTED IN A DRESS. WHEN THE VEIL WENT ON I WAS IN love” the photography My fiancée and I started looking for a photographer by visiting wedding fayres to get an idea of the styles that we liked. We spoke with loads of different photographers but ended up really confused - there’s just so many options and budgets. After the wedding fayres I emailed a long list of photographers, but no one seemed to be ticking every box. Either they were too expensive, seemed to be a bit too quirky or had too many posed shots. The last thing we wanted was jaw ache from holding a grin for two hours after the ceremony! Then we found Dirk. His work was very natural and it seemed like he put huge effort into getting to know the bride and groom. After meeting up at a wedding fayre and then again at our reception venue, we knew we had our man. When Dirk arrived on the day it felt like a friend had come to have a giggle with us. We barely even noticed him taking any photographs! The day went seamlessly and Dirk

was just one of the wedding party. We had a few taster images arrive within 24hrs of our wedding and within a week Dirk had a full blog completed with a story of our day. Everyone loved it especially those that couldn’t make it to the wedding. Within two weeks we had two beautiful personalised boxes containing all of our images, plus a large framed print. To have all of our photographs so quickly was one of the best things about Dirk. He far surpassed what we had expected from him both in terms of service and the photographs themselves. Our view on wedding photography has changed dramatically. It was worth every penny to have photographs that captured my husband and I looking so naturally happy.

the venue The church was where I was christened and Easby Hall overlooked it so I could wake up and see the church on my wedding day. Easby hall also oozed luxury so felt perfect to be pampered before the wedding there. It also overlooks the church where I was Christened, which was the perfect view on my wedding morning. We had the reception venue decided within five days of being engaged. We visited numerous different places but wanted somewhere that had a relaxed feel so guests would feel at ease. Crathorne hall suited us perfectly - it was a large impressive hotel from the outside but it had a collection of smaller intimate reception rooms. When we discovered we could have a large oval table for the wedding breakfast rather than small tables we were even more excited about it.

the budget We made all the invitations, name cards, favours, table plan and thank you cards to save money but alsoto make it all as personal as possible. It was so lovely handing out the invites knowing we had spent so much time and effort making them individually. We also didn’t have chair covers. I didn’t feel the need to spend money to cover perfectly nice chairs!

the honeymoon We are currently on honeymoon in the Maldives whilst writing this interview! Spending two weeks in a jacuzzi water bungalow is sheer heaven.

Simon and I had arranged an evening, at the fabulous Samling Hotel in the Lake District. We went for a walk by Ambleside Lake in the afternoon, when Simon suggested we go on a boat trip, that evening. The taxi picked us up at 7pm, to take us down to the pier. We had a lovely ride downtown to the harbour, yet I felt disappointed, that we would be spending an evening, with over 100 other people, on the boat. I had imagined, a quiet evening with Simon, as it was our first night away alone since having our little girl, Ava. We arrived at the harbour, to be met by the Captain, who informed us that the boat trip had been cancelled. Apparently, we were the only couple they had not managed to contact, so they would take us out on our own. I looked at Simon’s face and he looked so excited, I said ok. I headed in the direction of an extremely large boat, only to be shown to a very small and beautiful, antique teak boat. Still unaware, I climbed over into the boat and noticed a large bouquet of roses and lillies with a bottle of champagne and tea lights hanging all over the boat. The captain welcomed us to the boat and asked us to sit at the front. He then took us on a beautiful boat ride. With about 5 minutes to spare at the end, Simon pointed out the Samling Hotel in the distance. I glanced up to it and when I looked back, he was on one knee with a “blue” box, just in time for the sunset. I’m unsure what I was more shocked at; the fact that he had proposed, or that it was a Tiffany solitaire!. I couldn’t have asked for a more stunning setting and a more beautiful evening and of course, I very emotionally said yes. We drank the champagne and on our return, we had a glass of wine in the Waters’ Edge garden, where I rang my family and friends, to share our happy news.We went for a fabulous meal at the beautiful Drunken Duck Inn, in Ambleside, where the locals celebrated with us and bought us drinks! A genuinely memorable evening. 80

the venue Everything, including the service was held at Newton Hall itself. I hate being the centre of attention and wanted it to be very relaxed and in one place. We decided to get married later in the day and go straight into the reception, rather than a day and evening reception. I wanted everyone to celebrate the whole day with us, so decided against two separate receptions. The day before our wedding, the weather was dreadful, but as if someone was watching over us, I woke to a spectacular sunrise. We managed to have our wedding outside in the stunning gardens, thanks to the glorious weather.

We wrote our own vows and had the whole wedding party in tears. After the ceremony we went on to have the best meal and party of my life. It was truly everything I could have ever wished for and I couldn’t thank Newton Hall enough. There are weddings almost every day and they repeat this process several times per week, but they truly do make you feel like you are the only bride to get married there. I also used Charlotte from the Finishing Touch Company in Newcastle, where I hired bird cages and jam jars and lace. She made the venue look truly breath taking.

the photography Claire from Burns-Rowatt photography is one of my closest friends and it was an honour to have her photograph my wedding. I don’t enjoy looking at pictures of myself, but Claire truly did make me feel amazing. Her talent is boundless and I felt so proud and grateful to have her at our wedding. Having my best friend do something so personal made me feel very relaxed about having my photograph taken, and I think this is reflected in the images.

the budget Simon decided to make a lot of the items for our wedding, including invitations and a ‘Mr & Mrs Lee’ sign which was placed on the fire place and covered with roses and candles. He also etched our readings onto oak seat signs and created name tags. We have now set up a small business to offer these services due to the fantastic feedback we received on our wedding day.

We met in 2011 in a pub in Dubai, where I was working at the time and Gareth was visiting on holiday. We clicked immediately and before either of us knew it Gareth took the plunge to leave the UK and move to Dubai for a new life. Fast forward a year or so and we were on holiday in Australia where Gareth proposed on a clifftop and I immediately said “Yes�.

Our main requirements for a venue were somewhere with a civil ceremony license and preferably in the countryside of North Yorkshire or Northumberland. Once we started looking at places we realised we preferred venues that were owned by a family rather than a group or company as there was a much more relaxed

and flexible approach to planning the wedding. We also loved that we could stay over in Middleton Lodge with our family and some friends. It was important to be close to other accomodation as more than half of the wedding guests had flown in from countries including USA, New Zealand and China.

the photography Stan & Jane from Stan Seaton Photography were recommended to us by Middleton Lodge. We researched a few other photographers but none had such a natural and candid style of photography. This relaxed approach was something we wanted to capture on our wedding day. Upon meeting Stan & Jane we got a good ‘vibe’ and found them easy to get along with. We had a lot of fun on the day and at no point did we feel pressured, which we have heard can happen with some photographers. The Images from Stan & Jane are stunning, funny and moving. nd once you return from the honeymoon, a once in a lifetime trip that has seen you relax in style in a beautiful location, it is time to view the all-important photos and choose those that you love the most. But why should the luxury stop there? Michael and Kathryn Carruthers, owners of CARRO of Wynyard, are photographers who know exactly how to extend the dreamy wedding experience. Stepping into their photography studio and viewing room, an extension to their impressive home, it is immediately apparent that the couple takes their business seriously. Michael explains: “All of our equipment is top notch, we have all the props you can think of to make a studio shoot exciting and age appropriate. We have the experience to make an engagement, family or newborn shoot relaxed, fun and seamless.” Bringing together Kathryn’s artistic skills, and Michael’s business brain, the company is reinforced by Michael’s niece, Laura who joined CARRO of Wynyard through her college apprenticeship programme. Michael and Kathryn are currently in talks with local colleges as they are planning to mentor and nurture more talented photographers and offer valuable workplace training. “This means that there will be three of us on wedding shoots if the project requires it. Couples are lucky enough to receive additional fresh and innovative images from some of the North East’s rising stars”, explains Michael. “We have a fantastic combination of skills; Kathryn focuses on fine art and fashion aspects whereas I enjoy traditional and reportage photography, meaning for couples who don’t want too many posed shots they can rest assured that every client can have a service tailored to their individual needs.” Strengthening their brand, and the quality of the images and albums they produce, is a close working relationship with makeup artist to the stars, Amanda Bell, who has worked with the likes of Sienna Miller, Jessica Biel and Dame Helen Mirren. Kathryn discovered Amanda online when she was researching makeup artists for her own special day, and can therefore recommend Amanda to brides from both a personal and professional perspective. Amanda has her own area in the CARRO of Wynyard studio, where Brides are able to hold their makeup trial alongside a pre-wedding shoot if required, adding to the feel of security and a comprehensive service that CARRO of Wynyard is becoming so well known for. Since then, the trio has collaborated on numerous creative projects including the exclusive catwalk launch of couture brand Emaliomada in Mayfair at London Fashion Week earlier this year. The range of photography packages on offer are certainly something to boast about. You need to be a part of the day and enjoy it to the full, tasting the mouthwatering canapés and enjoy the refreshing welcome drinks. Following the main shots, our job is to be a fly on the wall and capture those tender, natural moments that a posed shot simply could not achieve.” It would be impossible to enjoy those spectacular images any more effectively than in the plush cinema room itself, where there is space for the whole family to come along to view those precious moments for the first time. aving previously had few issues with my skin, the last few months have seen certain areas of my face break-out in spots and pimples, which despite visits to my GP and trying out the latest medicated products available on the skincare market, weren’t clearing up as quickly as I’d hoped. Stepping into Tracy’s clinic, I was immediately reassured that whilst I was in a medical, professional environment, there was an element of relaxation and a pampering feel, that you perhaps wouldn’t get in most clinical settings. Having never previously had any kind of invasive procedure and admittedly, being apprehensive about such a thing, I was pleased to realise that Dermalux would feel no more intimidating than a facial or a brow treatment, in more familiar surroundings. Tracy genuinely cares about getting the best out of her client’s skin, discussing previous treatments and any relevant medication, and takes a real interest in how to improve the skin’s appearance. Having such a friendly, amiable personality, it is easy to see why Tracy would be the first choice amongst Brides looking for the best person to treat them in the run up to their big day, and the Dermalux treatment is one that is suitable for anyone who wants to enhance their complexion and feel more confident in front of the camera.

after the first treatment, I noticed that my skin was already looking healthier and more youthful, after following Tracy’s advice. “There would be no point in you coming here, having the treatment, and then going home and putting something on your skin that is full of chemicals that are going to cause irritation. We design a programme for each client to educate them to use the right products, and to get long-lasting results using the correct products.” After just two treatments, my troublesome areas of acne were almost clear, due to a combination of the LED treatment and mild antibiotics from my GP. Although the medication had begun to work previously, I was delighted to see that Dermalux had taken away the redness around the problem areas, reducing the appearance of acne dramatically. T MAY BE THE ROMANTIC NOTION OF THE wind in your hair and the sun on your backs, long lead times and increasing rates at traditional locations or a desire for something that feels a little more adventurous, but more and more Brides Up North are choosing to host their wedding ceremonies in the open air.

And once you’re out, why not stay out? A big white tent isn’t your only option for your wedding reception. Whilst nothing tops the glamour of a beautifully lined formal marquee for a traditional celebration, there are plenty more outdoor choices available. Think about how you want your wedding to look and feel before choosing your awnings. Consider a pretty yurt, a big top, a Scandinavian style tipi or even a Bedouin style tent for a day with a difference. If you are thinking about taking things outdoors, here are my top tips for the perfect day whatever the weather.

legally wed If you want your ceremony to be legally binding, the venue must be a permanent structure with a roof and approved for marriage. There’s always the option of saying “I do” in a separate civil or religious ceremony but some venues have licensed areas with a roof in the grounds such as a summerhouse or a gazebo so that couples can still tie the knot in the open air. Do your homework in advance and make sure that your chosen location will result in a valid marriage certificate.

ongratulations on your recent triumph in the wedding industry awards! Tell us about the fabulous awards that you have won recently: Thank you. It was an amazing experience for us all. We were ecstatic to say the least to have won North East Wedding venue and North East Event Team, so we went to the London awards ceremony as a celebration and a treat for us all. We were not expecting to win anything else but then to pick up the highly commended National Wedding Venue and the National award for Best Event team was unbelievable- we definitely celebrated in style that night!

How were the award winners selected and how did it feel to win? The awards were selected purely by bride’s votes, which mean a lot to us as it’s great to know brides appreciate what we do. What is it that makes Middleton Lodge such a special wedding venue? We don’t like to label Middleton Lodge as a wedding venue, more a private house that we offer as your ‘Home from Home’ for however long you choose to stay. Whether it be for a weekend or midweek Wedding to enjoy a couple of days with close family and friends, or for Corporate Team Building or a family celebration.

What was your background before coming to Middleton Lodge? I originally did a degree in fashion design, of which I had several work experiences in bridal boutiques. I loved working with brides helping them source things for the big day and just being involved in the general excitement leading to the build up to their wedding. I actually designed and made a wedding dress which was later sold. Having being very food and beverage orientated, I worked and travelled Australia working with a catering company. I then returned to England and did a Masters in Event & Conference management whilst starting my career here at Middleton Lodge. I am a self taught wedding coordinator who has learnt to blend with the guests but support the Bride at the right times . I genuinely love working with brides, helping somebody’s dream day happen is an amazing and rewarding feeling.

How does having a wedding co-ordinator on hand make life easier for the bride and groom? It allows you to pass your worries on to us. It is a point of call that will explain and instruct as needed, letting you know what is going on even if you are not in the same room as the rest of guests. It’s like having a secret spy keeping you up to date with everyone else’s progress. ‘Mission Wedding.’ What is the most rewarding part of co-ordinating weddings for Middleton Lodge? My favourite part of the wedding is when the Father of the Bride see’s the bride in her dress for the first time and then when the Groom see’s the bride for the first time. It really is an amazing moment and it’s the point when the bride’s shoulders relax and everyone in the room beams. How would you best describe a wedding at Middleton Lodge? Relaxed, Tasteful, Exclusive & Unique What wedding trends and themes have you seen emerging recently? Macaroon Wedding Cakes, Amazing idea, looks fab and doesn’t tend to be wasted as they are easily portable after your big day. What is the most unusual request that you have had as part of a wedding? For a dog to be the ring bearer.

Middleton Lodge seems to be constantly evolving, what is next for the venues developments? ‘The Coach House’ with a large restaurant, private dining rooms and 9 luxury en-suite bedrooms is being converted from the original Carriage House built around 1780 as part of the Georgian Estate it is situated a short walk away from Middleton Lodge. The Coach House launch date is Friday October 3rd, 2014.

What can couples expect to see at your next wedding exhibition on Sunday 12th October 2014? Brides up North have organised our next luxury vintage wedding exhibition so you can expect to see 35 amazing suppliers, the house set for a ceremony and wedding breakfast, free bubbly and generous amounts of canapés. On the day personal viewing appointments are available- however they need to be booked in advance via Middleton lodge as only limited appointments are available on the day. And finally, if you could give one piece of advice to a couple planning their wedding, what would it be? Plan everything. Be as organised as possible and then on the day try not to worry about anything. Let the day flow as you have previously planned and most of all enjoy and make the most of every moment.

n 2012, after years of helping family and friends with wedding flowers and venue styling, Jane Steel and Mandi Dyson turned their passion for Wedding Flowers into a business and Wedding and Events Floral Design was born. Jane completed an intensive training course on Bridal Flowers at the renowned Jane Packer Flower School in London. Specialising purely in weddings and special events, Jane has honed her artistic skills to perfection creating remarkable floral designs, whilst Mandi has a keen eye for venue styling and also creates stunning buttonholes. We met at university where we were both studying for a PhD.We were friends for around 3 years before getting together – I can truly say that I have married my best friend. We had been together for about a year when Jason propsed. It was on a beach in Thailand. I was in a hammock, of which I nearly fell out when he got down on one knee!

I always knew I wanted lace and this was only the third dress that I tried on! I knew instantly that it was the one, particularly due to my mum’s tears. I purchased my dress from Just Perfect in County Durham and the Bridesmaid dresses were a high street mix of Ghost, French Connection and Coast.

the details Everything for our wedding was themed around books so dĂŠcor was extremely important to us. The reception tables were decorated with old books and our place settings were made from scrabble letters and boards. Our wedding favours were Roald Dahl books and as a surprise my dad had had bookmarks woven especially for the occasion.

Our readings were done by two of my bridesmaids and were The Lovely Other Dinosaur by Edward Monkton and the lyrics to I Could Die for You by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Our first dance was to 5 Years Time by Noah and the Whale. The other thing that was really important to us was food - our reception meal was 7 courses!

the photography Due to the wedding taking place in Italy, we didn’t know what to do about wedding photography. We didn’t use a wedding planner and organised everything ourselves. We stumbled across GASP’s work at a wedding fayre in Darlington and instantly fell in love with what we saw. We knew we didn’t want ‘cheesy’ wedding photographs. We preferred images that were real and captured the moment. We asked Jade and Nicky whether they would ever consider shooting a wedding in Lake Garda and they said yes. Taking them along with us for the week we were in Italy is the best decision we could ever have made – they truly made themselves like wedding guests, which was exactly what we had hoped for. We have received our images and are in the process of narrowing them down for a wedding album, which is no easy task. They are truly fabulous, and GASP surprised us at our home reception with a beautiful printed black and white canvas of one of the images. If I could rate my experience 20 out of 10 then I would!
