As a former student and current President of Chester Students’ Union, I can assure you that the University offers much more than just a place for you to study. Joining this vibrant community will provide you with an engaging and exciting student life both inside and outside the lecture theatre.

Our experienced mentors and lecturers are here to offer guidance and support to enhance your time at the University. With built-in work placements and links to industry experts on most of our courses, the first thing you’ll notice at Chester is how closely linked our courses are to the real world. Here are a few examples of how some of the students at Chester have become ‘world ready’…

Build-a-Bridge Consultants

The relocation of learning and teaching to Warrington town centre was an ideal opportunity for the University to work with students as partners on the design of learning spaces.

Using funding from the University’s Unijob scheme, five students from both our Social Science and Health and Social Care courses were employed as Build-a-Bridge consultants to help create a bridge between faculty and students. In particular, their role was to help capture the student voice regarding the proposed move, build on established links between staff and students, and seek to enhance existing and future educative and supportive spaces, whether digital, physical, emotional or otherwise.

In addition to providing essential information to inform the learning space design, the Build-a-Bridge project also proved to be an effective model for future working with students.

The Work Experience Ladder

Like other students on the Science and Engineering courses at Chester, Dion benefitted from industrial placements during his study. This led to an extra placement with the aluminium waste technology company, Ultromex, and finally a full-time graduate job – a great example of the University’s ‘Work Experience Ladder’.

“After my graduation, I was offered a full-time job at Ultromex, and this was largely due to my initial placement with them and the work which I had carried out during that placement. Thanks to my Chemical Engineering degree, I had developed multiple skills which were well-suited to the needs of the organisation.”

Breaking Barriers: A Learning Disability Awareness Initiative

In 2021, a dynamic group of Learning Disability students set out to challenge prevailing misconceptions surrounding learning disabilities, particularly the assumption that medicating was the primary solution for individuals displaying challenging behaviour. Their vision took the form of awareness cards designed to educate and inform.

Fuelled by dedication, the group initially crafted 50 cards, swiftly snapped up by eager placement students. Following this, the team redesigned the cards for enhanced effectiveness and distributed another 50 to placement students. Their vision evolved further, aiming for a more robust version with potential dissemination within the NHS.

To bring their vision to life, NHS England contributed funds to produce 250 of these invaluable cards. Half would be distributed to students, and the other half earmarked for NHS staff at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral.

As the project gains momentum, the team eagerly anticipates its continued expansion. The cohort of Learning Disability students of 2021 has not only broken barriers but has set a precedent for future initiatives driven by purpose and collaboration.

Our learning locations are packed full of subjectspecific facilities, have their own libraries, computer suites and study areas, along with plenty of spaces to take a break in between teaching sessions.

Exton Park, Chester

Exton Park is where our story began and is home to a number of our academic schools, a range of subject-specific facilities, and learning and teaching spaces. Seaborne Library has an extensive selection of books, e-books and e-journals, as well as bookable study pods, social area, sensory suite, 24-hour access computer labs, and a two-floor study zone.

At Exton Park, you’ll find the Students’ Union, a range of catering outlets, sports and societies, fitness facilities, a bar, mini supermarket and faith spaces. You’ll also find many of the University’s central support services here, as well as student accommodation.

Wheeler, Chester

Wheeler offers specialist vocational courses with excellent facilities for policing and health and social care students to put theory into practice, as well as delivering law courses right in the heart of Chester’s ‘legal quarter’. The on-site library houses extensive book collections, journals and school-based resources, as well as computer suites and multimedia rooms. Wheeler provides a 192-seat lecture theatre and a range of teaching spaces, the café and student common room provide social, group work and discussion spaces for students.

Queen’s Park, Chester

Home to the Chester Business School, our multi-million-pound corporate hub is only a stone’s throw away from Chester’s lively city centre. Here you’ll find modern computer suites and a dedicated business library with group study spaces and learning pods for quiet study, and a 200-seat lecture theatre. When it’s time for a break, you can grab a bite to eat at the top-floor brasserie with panoramic views of Chester.

Creative Campus, Kingsway, Chester

Our specialist creative arts site is home to our art, design, media, performance and production-based courses which are all part of the School for the Creative Industries. This fantastic campus is home to our state-of-the-art studios and workshops, performance and rehearsal facilities, exhibition spaces and our courtyard performance area. We have many open-access computer suites (Mac and Windows), equipment loan facilities, a library and learning resource centre, lecture and seminar rooms, study areas, and a café. The creative atmosphere and outstanding facilities will enable you to be your creative best.

Gateway House, Chester

Our central hub in Chester city centre is home to our journalism courses and these newsroom facilities feature Apple Macs with creative software and large screens for viewing. The Media Studio, with HD cameras and a green screen, is an ideal space for all our Journalism students to film news reports and there are podcast rooms to record audio projects and radio shows.

University Centre Warrington

University Centre Warrington specialises in delivering professional practice-based courses. The Centre offers a hands-on and future-focused education for subject areas such as education, health and social care at our new Time Square and Remond locations, in the heart of the town.

Remond House

A dedicated site for Warrington students, Remond House provides quality subject-specific facilities to ensure the best possible practical experience. It includes a student hub offering key student services, as well as social spaces for students between teaching sessions.

Time Square

Our town centre location is a hub offering small lecture spaces and study zones, as well as space to connect for students, businesses, schools, colleges and the local community.

University Centre Shrewsbury

Our Shropshire-based University Centre offers a range of practice-based courses that are committed to tackling big societal issues and making a difference to the community. A personalised and engaging student experience is provided by a friendly and welcoming closeknit team of academics.

The Centre is a welcoming space that provides a personal approach to learning. You will find a range of lecture and seminar rooms, modern computer suites, health simulation suites, a spacious library with flexible study spaces and a 24/7 open access IT Suite.

Outside of the classroom, you can relax in the student social area, courtyard and on-site café, or work out in the gym.

University Centre Birkenhead

Our dedicated University Centre for health and nursing offers a range of outstanding subject-specific teaching and learning facilities. The Centre is easily accessible to the local communities of the Wirral and Liverpool. Facilities include a fully equipped skills laboratory resembling a high-tech hospital ward, virtual reality equipment and technology, classrooms and meeting spaces for group work, as well as a dedicated Health and Social Care library.

University Centre Reaseheath

We have a close relationship with University Centre Reaseheath, a specialist land-based University Centre near Nantwich with a commitment to sustainability and conservation. Students on our Animal Behaviour and Welfare course spend their first year at the Centre, which offers industry-standard facilities and a licensed zoo with over 250 different animal species.

For us, accommodation at university is about so much more than just having somewhere to live; it’s about feeling like you belong.

Safe and Secure

We offer a safe and secure environment for you to live and study, and our friendly Security team are on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our Residential Life team, made up of current students, are allocated to our University accommodation to provide advice, guidance and support to help you get the best out of your university experience.

Living Away from Home

On-call Residential Advisers live alongside students on site, and also provide out of hours support for residential students. All our students can rest easily knowing that our firstaid trained University Security team work 24/7, all year round.

Accommodation Options

We guarantee accommodation for first-year students who will be based at our Chester and Shrewsbury locations, so that’s one thing ticked off your list already.

Student accommodation in Chester is made up of University, partnership and private sector residences, and students based in Chester have lots of accommodation options. Whether you want to live in a flat or a house; in a studio or with shared facilities; to be self-catered or full board; to be on-site, or to be just down the road or in the city centre, there will be something to suit you.

Our University-owned accommodation in Chester currently ranges from £105 – £185 per week.*

Shrewsbury

Accommodation for students based in Shrewsbury is in a convenient town-centre location and is just a ten-minute walk from the University Centre. There is the option of either studio apartments or en-suite cluster flats with communal kitchens and living areas.

Our Shrewsbury accommodation currently ranges between £130 – £156 per week.*

Warrington and Birkenhead

If you are seeking accommodation to support your studies at Warrington or Birkenhead, please contact the Accommodation team at accommodation@chester.ac.uk, who will outline some of the options available to you.

Commuting Students

If you’re considering living at home and commuting to university, you’ll still be able to access all of the extras that make being a University of Chester student so good. Lots of students choose to commute for all sorts of reasons: to save money, to be near family, to keep a part-time job or simply because they like their home comforts.

Public Transport

Chester has high-quality public transport links, making it easy to commute within the city and to the city from the wider local region. Chester train station and Chester bus station are both a 15-minute walk from our Exton Park learning site and all of our other sites in Chester. Our University Centres are well-served by public transport, making them easy to commute to from around their regions. University Centre Birkenhead takes just ten minutes to reach from Liverpool city centre. University Centre Warrington is a short walk from both Warrington Central and Warrington Bank Quay train stations, as well as Warrington bus station. University Centre Shrewsbury is a five-minute walk from both Shrewsbury bus station and Shrewsbury train station.

Driving

We are able to offer a small number of parking permits to those students who meet the specified criteria; students with disabilities and those who have the furthest to travel are prioritised.

Induction Process

For many students, the concern around commuting is that they won’t be able to meet people or make friends. Please be reassured that this is the main concern for the vast majority of students – commuting and residential – so you are not alone. Because of this, our student induction process starts even before you arrive, with social media groups that will help you

find your course mates and those you might share common interests with, as well as virtual events and meetings with your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) to help you settle in.

Clubs and Societies

An excellent way to integrate at university and meet people is through a club or society. The Freshers’ Fair is a great opportunity to browse what is on offer, and to sign up to things that interest you. Societies can often be the basis of lifelong friendships, leadership opportunities or just a great way to spend time communally doing something you love. It’s important to seize those opportunities as you never know where they might lead.

Ongoing Support

Our personalised learning ethos means that we want to get to know you as an individual to help you develop and grow. Your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) will help with that, but it’s good to know that the network of experts in Student Services are also on hand to offer support as and when it is needed.

Social Spaces

Here at Chester, you’ll find cafés, bars, restaurants, common rooms and outdoor spaces designed for students to use when they are not working, as well as our libraries, which are often a social hub, too. Come for your lecture and stay all day.

Give yourself plenty of time to arrive and recharge before a session starts.

Use your commuting time on the train to get work done or prepare for teaching sessions.

Beautiful and packed with history, Chester is a bustling 21st century city balancing big-name shopping, eating and living with a thriving independent scene.

Food and Drink

The city has a thriving independent food scenepacked full of flavour and suitable for anyone on a budget. Why not try breakfast at Hanky Panky Pancakes, or enjoy happy hour and tapas at Fiesta Havana. At Chester Market, feast your eyes on a vibrant selection of global and local street food, from Thai, Bangladeshi or Mexican, to cheese-themed stalls, artisan breads and an ice cream pudding parlour. If café culture is your thing, take in the coffee aromas at Jaunty Goat or Bean and Cole - perfect for a study break.

Nightlife

Whether you want quirky bars, lively nightclubs or side-splitting comedy evenings, there’s a night out to suit everyone. Find a plethora of music venues showcasing live performances every weeknight, such as Telford’s Warehouse, The Live Rooms and Alexander’s. For chilled vibes and drinks with friends, the city is abuzz with bars – try Palm for cocktails with that wow factor, or step into an atmospheric, art-deco style jazz bar at Prohibition. If nightclubs are your thing, head to Rosie’s and don’t miss their weekly student nights. What’s more, Chester has been awarded the coveted “Purple Flag” status, which means you can be sure of a safe and thriving nightlife in the city.

Cultural Quarter

In the heart of the city, you’ll find Storyhouse – an award-winning cultural centre containing two state-of-the-art theatres, a cinema, library, restaurant and two bars. On top of that, their cosy workspace is ideal for a study session, especially with the coffee-filled aromas swirling through from the cafe. Alongside this, there is Picturehouse – Chester’s new premium cinema showcasing arthouse and blockbuster films with six screens and a café-bar.

Sport and Leisure

Enjoy a diverse range of activities that will be sure to keep your weekends jam-packed. Along with bowling, cinemas and crazy golf at the Coliseum Leisure Park, take up the challenge of cracking secret codes in several of Chester’s escape rooms.

What is Chester Students’ Union?

Chester Students’ Union (CSU) is an independent organisation focused on supporting students to love their student life and have a strong voice during their time at the University. While independent, CSU works closely with the University and has in-depth knowledge of its policies and processes to provide students with effective help, support, and representation on a wide range of issues. This includes academic struggles and disciplinary issues, and we also promote many social opportunities and events throughout the year.

You are represented by three Elected Officers, who were voted in by the students to bring your voice to CSU and the University, and to help create change to improve student experience. It is a diverse role, as Officers keep in touch with students’ views, launch key social and justice-related campaigns, sit on various university committees, and are also Trustees of CSU as a registered charity. The Elected Officers are based at Exton Park in Chester but represent all University of Chester students, and work across the Chester, Warrington, Shrewsbury, and Birkenhead sites.

Interested in working with the Sport and Active Lifestyle team? There are a number of opportunities every year to work with us through paid or volunteer roles.

You will see part-time paid student vacancies for lifeguards, attendants and fitness instructors and volunteer roles for Active Campus Ambassadors.

Performance Sport

We have been excelling on the pitches, courts, tracks and rivers over the past five years with many titles being won by our teams. This is an excellent time to be part of Team Chester and create your own piece of sporting history at the University. Follow our teams’ performances at: bucs.org.uk

Fitness Classes

Fitness classes are free; you do not need a gym membership to benefit from our classes. Our current timetable has classes throughout the week and this can be viewed on our Portal page or within the Fitness Suite: Military Fitness, Weightlifting for Beginners, Spin in our Spin Studio (virtual and instructor led), Core Blast and Circuits. Anyone can view and sign up to a class via our fitness app Playwaze. Alternatively, you can visit the Fitness Suite reception for more details.

Sport Scholarships

Are you an elite athlete looking to push your sports performance to the next level? We want to help you reach your goals. A tailored package of financial support, as well as mentorship and clothing, are all available to those students wishing to reach new heights in their sporting career. Active Campus

If team sports are not really your thing but you like to be active, our Active Campus scheme will enable you to take part in weekly fun activities that will not only get you out and about and physically active, but will also help you to meet new people and support your overall wellbeing. Activities run throughout the year and you can attend as many as you like for free!

Athletics’ Union

Disability and Inclusion

The Disability and Inclusion team support students with disabilities, long-term health conditions, sensory impairments, mental health difficulties, social difficulties, and communication difficulties, for instance Autism and Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) (e.g., Dyslexia). Specialist staff, Disability Support Officers and SpLD staff will work with you to identify the most appropriate solutions to your potential barriers to learning.

The Disability and Inclusion team can also advise students about applying for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), creating Epilepsy and Seizure care plans, supporting disability related accommodation requests, parking permits, and creating Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEP).

Studying While Caring

If you are returning to your studies following the birth of a child, are pregnant when applying, or become pregnant during your studies, we are available to provide confidential information, advice and guidance, as well as a Pregnancy Support Plan. We take a flexible approach to support, wherever possible, led by you.

If you have caring responsibilities and would like to talk to others who are also studying at the University of Chester with caring responsibilities, we have a dedicated Student and Staff Carers Network that you can get involved with.

Chaplaincy

Our multifaith Chaplaincy team offers a safe and welcoming space for people of all faiths and none. The team work across the whole University, offering pastoral, spiritual and religious support and fostering diverse communities through our various spaces, weekly activities and events.

We have staff chaplains from Christian, Muslim and Hindu backgrounds and also a wide range of associate chaplains. Our University sites have some excellent Muslim prayer rooms for students and staff, and Chaplaincy leads the Community Hub space at Exton Park.

Every student at the University is allocated a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT), who will be a member of staff in your academic department. Your PAT is there to provide you with academic advice and guidance, and whilst your PAT is primarily concerned with your academic progression, you should feel free to consult them at any time about any personal issues you may have. If your PAT cannot help you directly, they will always suggest other sources of support, advice and guidance that may be available to you, both within and outside of the University.

Turnitin Draft Coach

All students have access to Turnitin Draft Coach. Draft Coach enhances and extends writing support available at the University by providing unlimited instant feedback, 24/7, 365 days a year. It is a self-study tool that students can use to develop their academic writing and research skills. Draft Coach offers three areas of support:

• Grammar Checker: highlights grammatical mistakes and provides explanation of issues.

• Citation Checker: identifies potential missing citations and references.

• Similarity Checker: allows students to check their work for similarity.

Test-drive a future career, enhance your work-related skills, boost your CV and gain real work experience with our nationally renowned module.

What Is It?

We provide students with the opportunity to complete a short in-person or remote-working placement based anywhere in the UK in your second year, with a written assessment at the end to gain credits towards your degree.

What Will I Do?

You get to spend time working in the role, industry or field you’re considering to see if it’s for you, and you get important ‘on-the-job’ experience that employers want everyone to have, but isn’t always easy to come by. Win-win.

You’ll be supported throughout the whole process – our dedicated colleagues will help you find a placement and an academic member of staff will be there to help you out too.

That’s Not All

You’ll get the chance to develop and apply key employability skills, such as team-working, project management, decision-making and communication in a work setting.

The opportunity to reflect on your experience is a crucial element, as it can help you gain more from the placement and better prepare you for the graduate job market.

Almost all our courses offer the opportunity to study abroad, and there’s no need to learn a language. Our dedicated team will work with you to determine the most suitable route to increase your chance of admission.

Overseas Exchange Year

Good attendance and participation on your course in your first year means you could have a chance for a full academic year abroad. You’ll have two options:

• The International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP), which offers a wide variety of host universities across every continent (except the Arctic and Antarctica)

• Applying to one of Chester’s overseas partner institutions through the Bilateral Exchange

Experiential Learning and European Placements

We offer an Overseas Experiential Learning module, which acts as an overseas alternative to Work Based Learning.

Languages for All

If you don’t want to travel but love languages, why not take advantage of our Languages for All courses, which offer the opportunity to learn one of 11 languages from beginner level to advanced. A reduced rate is charged to undergraduates, but this is fully refundable once you’ve completed the course.

We also offer a range of study and Work Based Learning opportunities in continental Europe, including year-long and shorter placements for those with some second language capability.

We are dedicated to guiding students to success through academic and pastoral support. Tutors are research active, and our work is linked to the Centre for Research into Education, Creativity and the Arts through Practice, which specialises in practice-based research and focuses on creativity, learning and the arts in professional contexts.

Foundation Years have been designed for those who wish to complete an undergraduate course but who do not have the necessary academic qualifications to enter directly onto the first year. If applicants display the ability and commitment required, our Foundation Years provide the opportunity to obtain an undergraduate degree. Upon successful completion of your Foundation Year, you will be able to progress onto the next year of your extended course.

Why Study?

At Chester, you will benefit from being taught by academics that solely teach on Foundation Years. This allows us to create a Foundation Year community that consists of students studying anything from Sciences to the Arts. Supportive lecturers and excellent pastoral and academic support are a key feature of our Foundation Years, and we are proud of what our students can achieve whilst they are with us.

What Will I Learn?

The Foundation Year focuses on your transition to, and preparedness for, a University of Chester undergraduate degree. The first year of study will provide you with subjectspecific curriculum that will help you gain confidence in developing university-level skills, as well as understanding academic life and transitioning to the next level of your studies. Designed to develop key academic, personal and study skills, it also places you at the heart of our undergraduate experience.

Degree and Higher Apprenticeships

If you’re thinking about gaining a qualification whilst working, then a degree or higher level apprenticeship may be something you’re interested in.

Delivery

Designed by employers for employers, degree or higher level apprenticeships are an opportunity for businesses to train and support the next generation of employees across multiple roles.

As a student, you would be employed throughout your course and would spend part of your time at the University of Chester, and the rest with your employer, gaining knowledge, skills and behaviours which you would demonstrate in the workplace and through your assessments.

Successful graduates would then leave the University with not only a degree, or higher level qualification, but also years of relevant work experience and the valuable connections needed to progress in their chosen specialist sector.

Our courses are co-designed with employers to ensure that apprentice graduates gain the skills they need to thrive in a competitive industry. We provide you with a dedicated team of tutors and support staff offering pastoral care throughout your apprenticeship.

Funding Your Studies

When it comes to student finance, there’s lots of information and support to help you.

Student Loans

Before we get into the detail, it’s useful to know that there are two types of student loan – Tuition Fee Loans for (you guessed it) tuition fees, and Maintenance Loans to help with living costs. Here are a few key facts about these loans:

• You will only start repaying the loans when you’re earning over a certain amount.

• There is no deadline for the loans to be repaid in full.

• After a certain amount of time, the outstanding amount will be cancelled (see further information about loan repayments on page 102).

Tuition Fees

If you’re a first-time undergraduate living in the UK, you are entitled to apply for a loan to have your tuition fees paid on your behalf by the Student Loans Company: slc.co.uk

This non-income assessed loan is paid directly to the University in three instalments if eligible.

At the time of writing, it is not possible to state what our exact fees will be for students starting an undergraduate degree in 2025, but in 2024 our tuition fees for Home students were:

Extra Costs

Your course will also involve additional costs not covered by your tuition fees. This may include books, printing, photocopying, stationery,

specialist clothing, travel to placements, optional field trips and software. Compulsory field trips are covered by your tuition fees.

Part-Time Students

Tuition Fee Loans are available to eligible part-time first degree students who complete a minimum of 25% of the full-time course load per year. Part-time course fees for the University of Chester vary, but for selffinancing students, fees are normally pro-rata to the full-time fee.

EU Students

Following the UK’s exit from the EU, students from countries in the European Economic Area and the EU, starting in or after the 2021-22 academic year, will pay International Tuition Fees.

Students who have been granted Settled Status may be eligible for Home Fee Status and if eligible will be able to apply for Tuition Fee Loans and Maintenance Loans. Students who have been granted Presettled Status may be eligible for Home Fee Status and if eligible will be able to apply for Tuition Fee Loans.

Irish Nationals living in the UK or Republic of Ireland are treated as Home students for tuition fee purposes.

Whilst at university, you’ll need to think about living costs for things like accommodation, food, travel and bills, and a Maintenance Loan is there to help with these things. If you’re going to be a part-time student, you may also be eligible for a Maintenance Loan.

Working While You Study

Working while you study can be a great option. Not only will it help you support yourself, but it’s a great way to meet new people and gain new skills.

Our vibrant city and town locations offer a variety of parttime working options, and our Careers and Employability team help students to find part-time work.

Our UniJob service enables you to apply for part-time jobs at the University, or you can use our CareerHub portal to find parttime work in the local area and elsewhere.

Loan Repayments

Repayments of your Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loan will start in the April after you have graduated or left higher education if you are earning over the threshold.

At the time of writing (November 2023), the student loan repayment threshold for English-resident students is £25,000 a year. Thereafter, it will be adjusted annually in line with average earnings.

If you are earning over the threshold, you repay 9% of everything earned above that amount. If you are earning less than the threshold, then your student loan repayments won’t be deducted.

Interest is charged on your loan from the day the Student Loans Company makes your first payment to you or your university or college, until the loan is either repaid in full or cancelled.

Managing Your Money at University

The Your Money team at the University of Chester promotes positive money management skills. Our Student Money Adviser offers one-to-one appointments offering advice and guidance on budgeting skills, financial support available from the University, debt and student finance.

The Student Shout Out newsletter contains useful information to help students tackle important money-related topics, such as Buy Now Pay Later, how to eat well for less and how to save money on energy. Students can also attend drop-in sessions with our Student Money Adviser to discuss any moneyrelated issues.

Bursaries

At the University of Chester, we support fair access for students and have a range of bursaries available.

With the approval of the Office for Students (OfS), the bursaries we currently offer for students entering University in 2024/25 are:

Carer Support Package

Deferred Entry

We are happy to make deferred offers to students who plan to take a gap year before starting a degree course. Deferrals are made for a one-year period only.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements can vary slightly from year to year, depending on the subjects you choose. Each course has its own entry requirements, which are shown throughout this guide and in more detail at chester.ac.uk

Our general entry policy requires applicants to have:

• A good level of literacy and numeracy (GCSE grade C/ grade 4 or above in Maths and English Language or suitable equivalent)

• Experience or interest relevant to the course(s) for which you have applied

We recognise:

• A mixture of study modes (e.g., mixes of A Level, Pearson BTEC qualifications, Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate and OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications)

• Points and grades achieved in A Level General Studies

• New T Level qualifications

Interviews and Auditions

For some of our courses, an interview or audition will be required before an offer can be made. Details of courses requiring an interview or audition can be found within the entry criteria of our course pages online and in this guide.

Applicant Days

If you apply for a course and you receive an offer, you will be invited to an Applicant Day at the University. This will allow you to visit the University and ask any questions that will help you to decide if Chester is right for you.

Accepting Your Offer

Once you receive decisions on all your choices, UCAS will require you to choose one of your offers

as your Firm choice, one as your Insurance choice, and decline all others. You will be given an individual deadline set by UCAS in which to reply to your offers. It is important that you respond by the deadline, otherwise your offers will be automatically declined by UCAS.

Mature Students

We offer dedicated support for mature students. If you are over the age of 21 on 1st September of the year you hope to start your course, you will be classed as a mature student. There is no upper age limit. We welcome applications from mature students and value your enthusiasm, commitment and experience, and so our entry requirements may be more flexible. Types of Degree

At the University of Chester, we offer a range of undergraduate courses that lead to a number of different qualifications.

Single Honours Degrees

Single Honours degrees are three years of full-time study or up to seven years of part-time study. Single Honours qualifications at the University of Chester include BA, BSc, BEng, BN (professional nursing qualification), BA with QTS (professional teaching qualification), and LLB (Law). We also offer some degrees with an additional year of study that qualify graduates to Master’s level. They are MEng (Engineering) and MNurs (Nursing).

Combined Honours Degrees

Combined Honours degrees are three years of full-time study or up to seven years of part-time study. Combined Honours degrees can also be up to four years of full-time study if the combination is with a language or if it includes a Placement Year.

Degrees with a Foundation Year

Many of our undergraduate degrees are offered with an additional Foundation Year. University of Chester Foundation Years have been designed for students who do not have the necessary academic qualifications needed to enter directly onto the first year of a degree but who have the ability and commitment to do so. Successful completion of the Foundation Year qualifies students to progress onto a full Honours degree. Individual course pages state whether your chosen course is also available with a Foundation Year.

Degrees with a Placement Year

Degrees with a Placement Year are four years of full-time study. They offer the same qualifications as the three-year Single or Combined Honours degree options, but also include a valuable year of work experience before your final year of study.

Foundation Degrees

Foundation Degrees focus on developing in-demand technical skills for a particular job or profession and offer a combination of workplace learning and academic study. It carries the same weight as two-thirds of an undergraduate degree –equivalent to a Higher National Diploma (HND) or a Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE) qualification.

Degree Apprenticeships

Degree Apprenticeships combine full-time paid employment with part-time university study and are offered in several subject areas. For more details about University of Chester Degree Apprenticeships and the courses available, visit: chester.ac.uk/apprenticeships

Part-Time Study

At the University of Chester, our part-time study options are available at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and our courses can often be studied in the daytime or the evening. There are also opportunities to study single ‘standalone’ modules from our courses.

Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups

Working with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults

The following information was correct at the time of writing (November 2023).

Several programmes of study at the University involve undertaking a placement that includes contact with children or vulnerable adults. Examples include training to be a Nurse, Teacher or Social Worker, but there are others. Such contact with children or vulnerable adults is known as Regulated Activity. Registered students may undertake other opportunities, such as a Work Based Learning placement or the volunteering scheme, which may also involve Regulated Activity.

The University (and other Higher Education institutions that offer programmes of study where students may come into contact with the vulnerable) is required to ensure that these students have been vetted by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and, in some cases, are provisionally registered with the appropriate Regulatory Body.

Once accepted onto a place at the University, we will write to you with further instructions on how to apply for a DBS enhanced check and to register with the DBS update scheme. You will be expected to pay the DBS charge for these services. Please note that we do not accept DBS checks from any other employer. Therefore, you will have to apply for a new check for your studies through the University as a Registered Body. You will also be expected to declare any cautions, convictions or any other matter that may have a bearing on your suitability to undertake Regulated Activity.

Any matters revealed either by you or the DBS will be considered by the Programme Leader and may affect our offer of a place. Whilst most matters will not automatically preclude an applicant from commencing study, we reserve the right to withdraw the offer of a place to anyone who fails to provide a satisfactory DBS check. Moreover, failure to declare a conviction etc. that is subsequently revealed on a DBS check may also affect your offer of a place.
