BIOGRAPHIES

Mark Russell Smith is a graduate in cello performance from the Juilliard School, and of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied conducting with Max Rudolf and Otto-Werner Mueller. He has served as director of U of M orchestral studies since 2007. In 2012, Smith spearheaded the U of M School of Music’s Britten Peace Project, with performances of Britten’s War Requiem in Europe and the U.S. Recent U of M projects include Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring (with the Joffrey Ballet), and St. Matthew Passion with the Detmold Hochschule für Musik (Germany). He serves as music director/conductor of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, and has guest conducted the Minnesota Orchestra, Houston Symphony, and St. Louis Symphony, and others. He was named artistic director of the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies in 2012, and was director of new music projects with the SPCO. He has been music director of the Cheyenne Symphony, Springfield (MA) Symphony, and Richmond Symphony. Born and raised in Costa Rica, David Carrillo started the violin at the age of four with his mother. An active performer, David has given chamber and solo recitals in Costa Rica, Italy, El Salvador, Peru, Panama, Nicaragua, and across the U.S.. He completed his undergraduate degree in violin performance at the University of Minnesota and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in orchestral conducting and violin at the same institution with Mark Russell Smith and Sally O’Reilly.

Emily Threinen is director of bands and associate professor at the University of Minnesota. She conducts the University Wind Ensemble, guides the graduate wind band conducting program, and provides administrative leadership for the bands. Threinen consistently works with composers, arrangers, and performing artists of varied disciplines. She is active across the nation and abroad (most recently--within the last five years, Spain, Australia, and Canada) as a guest conductor, clinician, and conference presenter. An advocate for music education, Threinen is a Yamaha Master Educator and is active in ABA, WASBE, CBDNA, NBA, and NAfME. Shaun Evans is a second-year wind band conducting doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota. He received his master of music degree from the University of California, Los Angeles after serving as high school band director in Kennesaw, Georgia. Shaun currently serves as the conductor for the UMN Gold Campus Band. David Roush is a second-year wind conducting master’s student at the University of Minnesota. Prior to his studies at Minnesota, he received a bachelor of music education degree at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His career began as a band director for grades 5-12 in Neoga, IL, where he taught for 5 years. He currently lives in Minneapolis.


BIOGRAPHIES, CONT.

Hisham Bravo Groover is a James Sample Fellow at the University of Minnesota studying under Mark Russell Smith. Concurrently, he serves as music director/conductor of the Buffalo Community Orchestra. Previously, Hisham was associate conductor of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, assistant conductor of the Arapahoe Philharmonic, and assistant conductor of the Lamont Symphony Orchestra. Hisham’s principal conducting mentors include Mark Russell Smith, Leonid Grin, and William LaRue Jones. Andrew Jinhong Kim is the first-year doctoral orchestral conducting student of Mark Russell Smith. Before Minnesota, he studied conducting at Ithaca College and music and English at Swarthmore College. Collaborative music making is a source of inspiration and joy for him, and he hopes to cultivate and contribute to a vibrant musical community wherever he goes.

Lauren Visel is a first-year conducting doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota. She recently served as director of the University of British Columbia’s Concert Winds. She received a master of music degree from the University of British Columbia after teaching in public schools. She is the director of the UMN North Star Campus Band. Preston Weber is a second-year wind conducting master’s student at the University of Minnesota. After graduating with a bachelor of music education from the University of Minnesota, he taught band and orchestra at Hill-Murray School in Maplewood, MN and conducted the Crosstown Community Band in Minneapolis. He lives in Roseville with his daughter and his wife, Olivia, a doctor of psychology candidate.
