BIOGRAPHY
Phil Hey is a drummer and affiliate faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Music. Hey’s studies at the U of M with Marv Dahlgren and in NYC with the legendary Ed Blackwell led him to a career combining performing, recording, and teaching. Hey has appeared on more than 125 recordings, including his own, Subduction, which was named Jazz CD of the Year in 2006 by City Pages. Hey was named their Jazz Musician of the Year then as well. He has performed, toured, and recorded with many jazz greats, including Charlie Rouse, Benny Carter, Harold Land, and, for more than 20 years, Dewey Redman. Hey currently leads his own Quartet and is a member of many groups which perform throughout the Twin Cities.
The School of Music, a unit of the College of Liberal Arts, is a leading institution for the education of successful performers, composers, teachers, administrators, and scholars. The School interacts with the larger university and Twin Cities communities through classes, participatory performing opportunities, community engagement activities, and more than 400 public performances each year. The students and faculty of the School are grateful for the continuing interest and support of parents and friends.
