BIOGRAPHIES

Guest artists from 29:11 arrived in Minnesota on September 5, 2019 to begin a 4-month music exchange with New Hope International Exchange. This unique musical group embodies all the aspects of a Hope Exchange as these young adults from South Africa have the opportunity to travel to the USA to share their musical talents, culture, and experience. During this tour 29:11 will perform in churches, and participate in workshops and concerts with High School, College/University and adult professional choirs and orchestra including The Minnesota Chorale and Minnesota Orchestra. Musicians and vocalists in the USA are given the opportunity to join with them under the musical direction of NHIE co-founder Brendon Adams. Additionally, they will present a Cantata, which takes the audience on a diverse musical tour of the history and culture of the indigenous people of South Africa and their Journey to Freedom and Reconciliation. The Cantata, written and directed by 29:11 members, includes original songs from 29:11 as well as South African artists who have used music to protest Apartheid and promote a free and unified South Africa. Christopher G. McGinley is a second-year DMA student in choral conducting. Having most recently studied at the Frost School of Music, he holds degrees in conducting and music education from the University of Oregon and University of Delaware. Before resuming his studies, McGinley taught general music and chorus in his hometown of Philadelphia, PA. He is a strong advocate for community music, serving intergenerational choirs in Philadelphia and Oregon. Here in the Twin Cities, he is the music director of the Trinity Lutheran Congregation.

Kira Winter is a third-year DMA student in choral conducting with a secondary emphasis in voice performance. Outside her work at the U of M, Winter serves as Director of Worship and Music at St. John's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. She has held conducting positions at Harvard University and Macalester College. Winter holds degrees from St. Olaf College and Boston University. Matthew Abernathy is a first-year DMA student in choral conducting. He spent three seasons on staff at Minnesota Opera as music director of Project Opera, children’s chorus master, and chorus master/offstage conductor for productions of Don Pasquale and La Bohème. Abernathy is currently the chorus master/assistant conductor at the Lakes Area Music Festival and teaches at the University of St. Thomas. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan and SUNY Potsdam - Crane School of Music. Alex Rack is a second-year master’s student at the University of Minnesota studying choral conducting. Before coming to the University of Minnesota, Alex received his bachelor of arts degree in music at Macalester College, where he worked as the assistant conductor of the Macalester Chorale. Currently, Alex is the choir director at Minnehaha United Methodist Church, and the founding director of the Minneapolis Madrigal Singers. Vinay Thomas is a first-year master’s choral conducting student. He is a recent graduate from The University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor of arts in music degree. Vinay founded and directed Longhorn Men’s Choir at UT for non-music students. Here in Minnesota, Vinay serves as the music director at Olivet Congregational Church in St. Paul.
