BIOGRAPHIES

Mark Russell Smith is a graduate in cello performance from the Juilliard School, and of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied conducting with Max Rudolf and Otto-Werner Mueller. He has served as director of U of M orchestral studies since 2007. In 2012, Smith spearheaded the U of M School of Music’s Britten Peace Project, with performances of Britten’s War Requiem in Europe and the U.S. Recent U of M projects include Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring (with the Joffrey Ballet), and St. Matthew Passion with the Detmold Hochschule für Musik (Germany). He serves as music director/conductor of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, and has guest conducted the Minnesota Orchestra, Houston Symphony, and St. Louis Symphony, and others. He was named artistic director of the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies in 2012, and was director of new music projects with the SPCO. He has been music director of the Cheyenne Symphony, Springfield (MA) Symphony, and Richmond Symphony. J. Nick Smith is currently a third-year wind conducting doctoral student at the University of Minnesota. He received his master of music degree from the University of Michigan after serving as a public school teacher in Tuscaloosa, AL for six years. Smith also serves as the conductor for the University of Minnesota North Star Campus Band. Born and raised in Costa Rica, David Carrillo Siliezar started the violin at the age of four. An active performer, he has given recitals in Costa Rica, Italy, El Salvador, and the U.S. He is starting a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at the University of Minnesota under Mark Russell Smith.

Hisham Bravo Groover is a James Sample Fellow at the University of Minnesota studying under Mark Russell Smith. Concurrently, he serves as music director/conductor of the Buffalo Community Orchestra. Previously, Hisham was associate conductor of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, assistant conductor of the Arapahoe Philharmonic, and assistant conductor of the Lamont Symphony Orchestra. Hisham’s principal conducting mentors include Mark Russell Smith, Leonid Grin, and William LaRue Jones. Ho-Yin Kwok is a James Sample Fellow studying with Mark Russell Smith. He is the winner of 2017-2018 Vincent C. LaGuardia, Jr. Conducting Competition and is artistic director and conductor of the Mississippi Valley Orchestra, assistant conductor of Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra (DSSO), and director of DSSO Youth Symphony. Kwok has previously served as cover conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra and conducted at Eastern Music Festival and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. Tenor Seokho Park is a second-year DMA student at the University of Minnesota, studying with Professor John De Haan. Previous performances include La Tragédie de Carmen, L’heure Espagnole, Postcard from Morocco, Die zauberflöte, La Traviata, Cosí Fan Tutte, La Bohéme, and Cavalleria Rusticana. Mr. Park will participate in the Glimmerglass Festival Young Artists Program in 2020. A native of St. Paul, Aisling O'Sullivan will be graduating this spring with her masters degree in horn performance, studying with Ellen Dinwiddie Smith. Undergraduate studies were completed at CCM with Professor Randy Gardner. Festivals attended include the Texas Music Festival, the Chautauqua Institute, Sewanee, and Kendall Betts Horn Camp.
