BIOGRAPHIES

Matthew Mehaffey is an associate professor of music at the University of Minnesota, where he was the 2015 recipient of the Arthur “Red” Motley Exemplary Teaching Award. In addition to conducting the University Singers and the Men’s Chorus, he also teaches courses in choral literature and conducting. Outside of the University, he is the artistic director of of both the Oratorio Society of Minnesota and The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, the “choir of choice” of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He has published extensively on the topic of choral rehearsal technique, and has focused recently on redefining the oratorio tradition in the 21st Century. His Downton Abbey oratorios, an outgrowth of this research, have been performed by choirs across the country. He and his wife have four young children. Kira Winter is a third-year DMA student in choral conducting with a secondary emphasis in voice performance. Outside her work at the U of M, Winter serves as Director of Worship and Music at St. John's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. She has held conducting positions at Harvard University and Macalester College. Winter holds degrees from St. Olaf College and Boston University. Christopher G. Abernathy is currently the chorus master/assistant conductor at the Lakes Area Music Festival and teaches at the University of St. Thomas. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan and SUNY Potsdam - Crane School of Music. Alex Rack is a second-year master’s student at the University of Minnesota studying choral conducting. Currently, Alex is the choir director at Minnehaha United Methodist Church, and the founding director of the Minneapolis Madrigal Singers. Vinay Thomas is a first-year master’s choral conducting student. He is a recent graduate from The University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor of arts in music degree.
