BIOGRAPHIES

Matthew Mehaffey is an associate professor of music at the University of Minnesota, where he was the 2015 recipient of the Arthur “Red” Motley Exemplary Teaching Award. In addition to conducting the University Singers and the Men’s Chorus, he also teaches courses in choral literature and conducting. Outside of the University, he is the artistic director of both the Oratorio Society of Minnesota and The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, the “choir of choice” of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He has published extensively on the topic of choral rehearsal technique, and has focused recently on redefining the oratorio tradition in the 21st Century. His Downton Abbey oratorios, an outgrowth of this research, have been performed by choirs across the country. He and his wife have four young children. Vinay Thomas is a first-year master’s choral conducting student. He graduated from The University of Texas with a bachelor of arts in music degree. An advocate for the transformative power of singing, Vinay founded and directed Longhorn Men’s Choir at UT. Currently, Vinay serves as the music director at Olivet Congregational Church in St. Paul. Alexander Woods completed bachelor’s degrees in music and religious studies at Pomona College in Claremont, CA, where he studied piano performance with Genevieve Lee and Ming Tsu. He is experienced in several genres of classical collaborative repertoire, and also enjoys performing jazz and popular styles. In addition to freelancing in the Twin Cities, Woods works as a collaborative pianist and administrative intern at Borromeo Music Festival in Altdorf, Switzerland. He is grateful to be the recipient of several grants and prizes that funded summer study at Brevard Music Center, Adamant Music School, the Collaborative Piano Institute, InterHarmony International Festival, and Source Song Festival.

Outside her work at the U of M, Winter serves as director of music ministries at Farmington Lutheran Church. Winter holds degrees from St. Olaf College and Boston University. Matthew Abernathy is a first-year DMA student in choral conducting studying with Kathy Saltzman Romey and Matthew Mehaffey. He spent several seasons on staff at Minnesota Opera and has served as music director of Project Opera, children’s chorus master, and guest chorus master. Abernathy is currently the chorus master/assistant conductor at the Lakes Area Music Festival and Mill City Summer Opera, and teaches at the University of St. Thomas. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan and SUNY Potsdam - Crane School of Music. Alex Rack is a second year master’s student at the University of Minnesota studying choral conducting with Kathy Saltzman Romey and Matthew Mehaffey. Before coming to the University of Minnesota, Alex received his bachelor of arts degree in music at Macalester College, where he worked as the assistant conductor of the Macalester Chorale.
