BIOGRAPHIES Travis J. Cross serves as professor of music at UCLA, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble, directs the graduate wind conducting program, and chairs the music department. He was also associate dean for academic mentoring and opportunity during the initial years of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Cross has conducted the UCLA Wind Ensemble at the California All-State Music Education Conference and College Band Directors National Association Western/Northwestern Division conference and prepared the band for centenary performances of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Emily Threinen is director of bands and associate professor at the University of Minnesota. She conducts the Wind Ensemble, guides the graduate wind band conducting program, and provides administrative leadership for the bands. Threinen consistently works with composers, arrangers, and performing artists of varied disciplines. She is active across the nation and abroad (recently in Brazil, Spain, Australia, and Canada) as a guest conductor, clinician, and conference presenter. An advocate for music education, Threinen is a Yamaha Master Educator and is active in ABA, WASBE, CBDNA, NBA, NAfME, and the Conductors Guild.

Betsy McCann is the assistant director of bands and director of athletic bands at the University of Minnesota, where she directs the Marching Band and University Band, teaches conducting, and administers the Athletic Band program. McCann earned degrees from the University of Minnesota and Northwestern University and is active as a guest conductor and clinician. Lance Sample serves as assistant director of athletic bands at the University of Minnesota, where he assists the Marching Band, directs the Minnesota Athletic Pep Bands, and teaches conducting. Sample earned degrees from West Virginia University, Florida State University, and The University of Texas at Austin. Marissa Benedict recently accepted the position of assistant professor of trumpet at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and is now a resident of Lake Elmo, Minnesota. Marissa previously was a faculty member at California State University, San Bernardino, and the Colburn School of Performing Arts. Before leaving for Minnesota, Marissa was in demand as a freelance trumpet player in Los Angeles and can be heard on over 160 motion picture recordings. She currently is principal trumpet for the Pasadena Symphony/Pasadena Pops, and 2nd trumpet for Long Beach Symphony/Pops. She plays regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles area orchestras, and is one of the founding members of The Modern Brass Quintet.
