Phil Hey is a drummer and affiliate faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Music. Hey’s studies at the U of M with Marv Dahlgren and in NYC with the legendary Ed Blackwell led him to a career combining performing, recording, and teaching. Hey has appeared on more than 125 recordings, including his own, Subduction which was named Jazz CD of the Year in 2006 by City Pages. Hey was named their Jazz Musician of the Year then as well. He has performed, toured, and recorded with many jazz greats, including Charlie Rouse, Benny Carter, Harold Land, and, for more than 20 years, Dewey Redman. Hey currently leads his own quartet and is a member of many groups which perform throughout the Twin Cities. Dean Sorenson is associate professor and director of jazz studies at the University of Minnesota as well as a prolific and highly sought-after composer, arranger, trombonist, educator, and clinician.
