TORERO BIO Name: Holly Fuhrer Hometown: Vancouver, WA Major: Industrial and Systems Engineering Favorite Campus Spot: Under the trees by the Immaculata fountain Favorite USD Memory (so far): Taking a paddleboarding class on Mission Bay with my friends for credit! “Classes here can be very challenging, but I’ve learned (after many late nights in Copley Library) that what I get out of the courses is what I put into them. USD provides the resources for success, you just have to be ready to work for it.”

An Education Rooted in the Liberal Arts All Toreros complete a liberal arts core curriculum in conjunction with their major and/or minor. Comprised of about 14 courses, this curriculum provides students with a foundational understanding of art, history, language, literature, mathematics, science, philosophy, theology and various social awareness issues. When combined with the small classes, personalized advising and undergraduate research opportunities that define a USD education, students are prepared to think innovatively, question purposefully and communicate effectively across academic disciplines and professional fields.

Changemaking Changemaking is at the core of the Torero spirit. Through experiences in the classroom, in the residence halls, on campus, across the city and around the world, our students are learning how to transform the world around them through compassion, cultural awareness, sustainable thinking and social innovation.

Study Abroad Global perspective and cultural understanding are hallmarks of the Torero experience. USD consistently ranks among the top three in the nation for undergraduate study abroad participation. We offer 80 programs in more than 30 countries, including our own USD Madrid Center.

Living on Campus Residential life is an essential part of the USD experience, and we require that students live on campus for their first and second years. The First-Year Experience is built on two core components: the Preceptorial Program and residential Living Learning Communities. Both serve to establish an immediate sense of community while also challenging students to expand their intellectual curiosity beyond the classroom. www.sandiego.edu/residentiallife

Diversity and Inclusion “Torero” may translate to “bullfighter,” but it really means much more. We strive to create an atmosphere where cultural heritage and faith traditions are preserved, while social stigmas are defeated. Our students are not defined solely as Honors students, athletes or members of Greek life. Rather, we cultivate a diverse community of students that are intertwined socially, culturally and academically.

Torero Athletics USD is home to 17 NCAA Division I athletic teams and has won the Commissioner’s Cup five times over the past eight years, an award given to the school with the best overall athletic performance in the West Coast Conference (WCC). SELECT STATS (2015-16): - Four WCC Team Championships - 37 Conference Scholar Athletes - Four All-American Honorees - Six Toreros Turned Pro More highlights available at www.usdtoreros.com.

Campus Recreation In addition to our Division I athletics program, a large selection of sports clubs, intramurals and recreation classes are available year-round. Living in San Diego means you can enjoy the outdoors 365 days a year, so it’s easy to stay active and have fun. www.sandiego.edu/campusrecreation

Faith and Spirituality USD welcomes students from all faith backgrounds and provides varied opportunities for spiritual growth. Though not required, Sunday night Mass in Founders Chapel is a favorite gathering for many, and University Ministry-led retreats are popular among students in varying stages of their spiritual journeys.

TORERO BIO Name: Danny Halloran Hometown: Milton, DE Major: Biology Minors: Chemistry and Italian Studies Pre-Professional Program: Pre-Medical Favorite Campus Spot: Garden of the Sea Favorite USD Memory (so far): Traveling to Panama with USD Medical Brigades to provide medical care to the members of an under-served community. I immersed myself in the Panamanian culture and had unforgettable experiences. “During the college process, I was looking for a university that provided an exceptional sense of community, fantastic relationships with professors and other students, dedicated itself to improving the world, and one that embraced the beauty of its surroundings. USD exhibits every one of those qualities.

Name: Markeia Brox-Chester Hometown: Oakland, CA Major: Business Administration Minor: Management Favorite Campus Spot: Behind the IPJ Favorite USD Memory: Studying abroad for a semester in London Post-Graduation Plans: Moving to the Bay Area to begin my role as an Employee Resource Center Generalist at Adobe

TO R E RO B IO

“I came to USD not really sure how to navigate around this new place called ‘college.’ Now that I have walked across that graduation stage, I know that without USD, I wouldn’t have this amount of confidence, courage and intelligence. USD took a first-generation student from thinking she wouldn’t make it, to knowing that the world is in the palm of her hand. The community and resources that I found at USD led me to receive a job offer in the fall of my senior year. I accepted that offer and, as of July 2016, have joined the Employee Resource Center at Adobe. Without USD’s Career Development Center continuously offering on-campus interviews and networking opportunities with major companies around the country, I would not be starting my career with one of the largest technology companies in the world.”

“On my first campus visit, I, like many others on the tour, wondered what a Torero was. The tour guide proudly stated that it was a Spanish bullfighter. After spending four years at USD, I’ve learned that being a Torero means more than just fighting bulls. A Torero represents strength, courage, dedication, love, passion and experience. A Torero represents the many nights spent studying and working hard for a goal.

A Torero is a fighter in every sense of the word. I am a Torero, and I am proud of it.”

“I lived on campus for three out of my four years at USD. I moved off campus my sophomore year and enjoyed my time away

“Before studying abroad, I didn’t even have a passport. I made the choice to embark on the journey when I realized the amount of growth and experience I would gain. I stepped out of my comfort zone and went to a country where I did not know

from school, but there is a great ease and comfort that comes with living on campus. When I returned from studying abroad, I decided to move back on campus to Manchester Village, the upperclassman housing on campus.”

“During my time at USD, I completed two internships, which I found through the Career Development Center’s (C-Dev) job site. I also went on the Silicon Valley Torero Trek, where C-Dev brought a group of students to meet with executives and
