CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR STUDENT’S ACCEPTANCE TO THE
UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO
WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO The University of San Diego is a leading Changemaker campus following its own path and charting its own course into the future. We look forward to welcoming your student as one of the newest members of the Torero family as we make this journey together. Your student is the type of scholar who can help us remain true to our Catholic identity and institutional mission while creatively collaborating with others to help solve the world’s most intractable problems. I congratulate you on your student’s acceptance to USD, and I welcome your family to our community of Changemakers! In just over six decades, USD has grown from a local college with 50 students and a handful of professors to a nationally-ranked Catholic university with more than 60,000 alumni around the globe. As a distinguished Changemaker campus, our entrepreneurial and innovative academic programs ensure that your student will find a course of study and an array of extracurricular activities that will ignite their intellectual passion, develop their critical thinking skills, invite their personal and professional development, and challenge their leadership abilities. This total student experience, both inside and outside of the classroom, will provide your student myriad opportunities to discover not only who they are, but also who they can become. Your student will receive an exceptional, values-based education at USD grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition. Their college experience will afford the freedom and space to reflect deeply and grow broadly while forming lifelong attachments and shaping core values and personal beliefs. Again, congratulations on your student’s acceptance! Our Torero community looks forward to welcoming your family to campus in August. Meanwhile, if you have any questions, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (619) 260-4506.
Sincerely, James T. Harris III, DEd President

WHY CHOOSE USD? With so many impressive qualities, we know that your student must have many excellent college choices. Here are just a few reasons families like your own have chosen USD:
A RIGOROUS AND SUPPORTIVE ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT Since its founding in 1949, USD has been committed to an education that combines the Catholic intellectual tradition with the liberal arts. Our core curriculum teaches students to think critically and innovatively while becoming ethical and engaged global citizens. Our faculty serve as teachers, advisors and mentors, assisting students in their academic pursuits from their first day of classes to well beyond graduation day. Internships, research and study abroad programs enhance the classroom experience and provide students with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for academic and personal growth. To promote a tight-knit community inside and outside the classroom, USD requires that students live on campus during their first and second years. By living on campus, students are immersed in the Torero community and are but a short walk from everything they need to be successful. Studies have also shown that students living on campus perform better academically.
A SAFE AND NURTURING COMMUNITY Understandably, safety is a primary concern for parents sending their student to college. The university’s public safety officers patrol USD’s 180-acre campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are always available to assist students. To learn more, please visit www.sandiego.edu/safety. By visiting this site, you will also have access to view the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, which includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings or properties and on nearby public property. A print copy of this report may be obtained at the USD Department of Public Safety. As a new Torero, your student will take part in USD’s First Year Experience (FYE). Comprised of our Preceptorial Program and themed Living Learning Communities, FYE ensures a seamless transition to life at USD and immediate connections to peers and professors. Once settled into campus life, your student will learn of the many ways to stay healthy, active and safe at USD. Campus recreation, athletic programs, clubs, organizations and a dedicated Wellness Center are just some of the many ways our students connect, engage and thrive outside of the classroom.
