PERSONAL
Responsibilities ACADEMIC INTEGRITY/HONOR CODE
By entering an institution of higher learning, you and your fellow students have committed to upholding the University of South Carolina’s Honor Code, which forbids cheating, plagiarizing or copying. To avoid violating the Honor Code and our standards of academic integrity: • Prepare your papers in advance by writing, rewriting, editing, and proofing them well ahead of deadlines. • Visit our Writing Center, Academic Success Coaching, or any of the variety of tutoring and support services offered by our Student Success Center for additional help. • Study your notes and participate in study sessions. • Ask for help from the appropriate sources when needed. Remember that cheating, plagiarism and copying reduce the value of your education. Be responsible for the grades you earn!
HOUSING RESPONSIBILITY
Whether you are living in a residence hall or in an off-campus house/apartment, you are paying to rent a facility. Make sure you and your roommate(s) discuss your general expectations of living, including guests, smoking and use of one another’s space/property. Members of the South Carolina community are encouraged to learn about one another and respect their differences with honest and consistent communication.
COMMUNITY
All members of the South Carolina community are encouraged to learn more from others and respect the differences in people, ideas, and opinions. To ensure that every member of the community is protected against discrimination based on age, race, color, sexual orientation, gender, religion, national origin, disability, genetics, and veteran status. Our Office of Equal Opportunity Programs (EOP) provides the South Carolina community members with opportunities for training competency. The EOP also offers a formal complaint process for those who have experienced discrimination. (visit sc.edu/eop/students)
ALCOHOL AND FAKE IDs
You must be at least 21 years of age to possess or consume alcohol in South Carolina. A first violation of our alcohol policy includes a $250 fine and a phone call home. Students who are of age and choose to consume alcohol should do so responsibly with high regard for the health and safety of themselves and others. Never drink and drive! Driving under the influence risks the lives of everyone on the road, including your own. Using or possessing an altered, borrowed or otherwise “fake” ID is illegal and punishable by law, including (but not limited to) criminal charges and the UofSC Code of Conduct violations. The University of South Carolina offers many alcohol-free events on campus throughout the year.
22
PERSONAL
Responsibilities DRUGS AND TOBACCO
If you choose to use illegal drugs, you put yourself at risk for many physical, emotional and legal consequences. A first-time violation of the UofSC drug policy includes a $350 fine and a call home. It is a violation of our drug policy to take prescription medicines that are not prescribed to you. Make smart choices about the substances you put into your body and potentially addictive behaviors in which you participate. In accordance with South Carolina’s commitment to creating a safe and healthy environment, our campus is completely tobacco-free. Tobacco can be very addictive and damaging to your body and wallet. Our university strives to promote the prevention of tobacco use and the risks associated with exposure to secondhand smoke.
LAW ENFORCEMENT AND SAFETY
The Division of Law Enforcement and Safety is a full-service police department with statewide jurisdiction that provides law enforcement services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to our community. The Division offers a variety of resources, programs, safety presentations, and self-defense classes to make South Carolina as safe as possible. The university also has more than 200 emergency call boxes on campus that students can use to alert police in the event of an emergency. Students are encouraged to follow Law Enforcement and Safety on social media to stay informed on safety updates. In the event of an emergency, students should call 911. To report suspicious activity or request non-emergency assistance, students should call 803-777-4215. For more information visit les.sc.edu.
The Carolinian Creed The University of South Carolina is committed to personal and community excellence by opposing intolerance and promoting integrity within our campus community. Our common values are formed upon our Carolinian Creed, which emphasizes openness, civility, integrity and diversity. In 1990, the Carolinian Creed was established as the university’s social honor code. Instead of limiting student’s rights through the creation of more rules, the Creed sets an example for members of the community to follow. The community of scholars at the University of South Carolina is dedicated to personal and academic excellence. Choosing to join the community obligates each member to the Carolinian Creed. Academic dialogue and civil discourse are the cornerstone of the educational system and crucial to individual growth.

& Academic Integrity Practice Integrity: The goal of the Honor Code is to create a fair learning environment and to assure your degree has value. Successful Carolinians take on the personal responsibility of actively practicing integrity within each assignment, project and test. Many students who find themselves in violation, struggle with time management, recognizing when and/or how to seek help and/or managing their stress. Additionally, some students take advantage of inappropriate online resources. When making a decision related to your academic work, think to yourself if you or someone you care about would be proud of the action that you are taking. These resources can help: • The Writing Center • Student Success Center • Stress Management Consultations through Student Health Services. Most of all, communicate with your professors, attend office hours and build relationships.
STUDENT CARE
& Outreach Team What We Do: The Student Care and Outreach Team is a group of caring professionals dedicated to student success and wellbeing by identifying concerns, addressing those concerns with the student, and referring them to campus and community resources. The Care Team’s primary goal is to ensure that our students’ needs are met with the necessary resources, including basic needs such as temporary food insecurity and to remain successful academically and personally at UofSC. Please visit us at sc.edu/careandoutreach.

When To Refer A Friend: If you are concerned for your friend’s well-being here are some signs to look for: • Physical: Significant changes in weight, cuts and bruises, changes in energy, etc. • Emotional: Inappropriate emotional outbursts, expressions of hopelessness or suicide, direct statements indicating distress • Academic Signs: Skipping class, making comments about not caring about their grades or changes in motivation.

TOP FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT UNIVERSITY HEALTH SERVICES 1
Health Insurance Requirement
All undergraduate students who take six or more credit hours must have health insurance. They can either purchase the university-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan or provide proof of their own health insurance. Visit sc.myahpcare.com for more information and to submit your health insurance information. 2 Immunization Requirement Immunizations keep our students healthy and safe. All incoming students are required to enter their immunizations in sc.edu/myhealthspace and attach supporting documentation providing proof of immunizations signed by a medical provider before attending Orientation. (Note: you can take a photo of your documentation with your phone and upload the photo.) 3 Mental Health Services Available 24/7 Students can call Counseling & Psychiatry after hours (803-777-5223) to speak with a counselor about urgent concerns. Parents can call Counseling & Psychiatry at any time if they have concerns about their student.
4 Mandatory Student Health Fee When they pay tuition, students pay the health fee, which covers most office visits with primary care, women’s health, counseling and all wellness, prevention and advocacy services and programs at the health center. Additional charges are applied to ancillary services such as lab work, prescriptions, X-rays and physical therapy. 5 An Accredited Patient Centered Medical Home University Health Services is an accredited Patient Centered Medical Home. Five aspects are emphasized within this approach: quality, accessibility, comprehensiveness, continuity of care and the patient-provider relationship. When a student visits University Health Services, they are assigned a primary care provider (PCP), who is part of a care team, composed of other physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Students are encouraged to build relationships with their PCP and care team. The four care teams are identified by trees: Dogwood, Magnolia, Oak and Pine. Students’ PCP and care team are listed on sc.edu/myhealthspace, where they can also make appointments and communicate with their providers.

ON YOUR TIME Initiatives
What is On Your Time Initiatives? On Your Time (OYT) is here to help students stay on track to graduate on time - or early! OYT offers accelerated study plans, and opportunities to meet graduation goals with alternative sessions like Summer Semester and Winter Session. OYT also provides advising services for non-degree and senior citizen students. OYT helps students complete their degrees in less time so they can begin building their futures.
“
We tend to refer to one’s undergraduate education as a four-year exercise. It could be three and a half...It could be three. Many of you want to get a jump on life. Others want to save money or reduce college debt. You can do that by graduating early. President Bob Caslen
”
Accelerated Study Plans Accelerated study plans are designed to allow students to complete an undergraduate degree in three years. There are also many accelerated graduate programs available, all of which are faster than the traditional study plan for the same degree. For more information about available majors for accelerated study, visit: bit.ly/UofSCaccelerated. Summer Semester Summer Semester courses vary in length and intensity, enabling students to custom build a schedule that fits their academic needs while still allowing them to fulfill other summer commitments. Students may also boost their GPA’s with an additional class or two to retain a scholarship or to avoid academic probation. Summer Minor Summer Semester has always been a great way for students to get ahead with their educational goals, but it just got even better. There are now four minors you can earn in a single summer: Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management; Retailing; Integrated Information Technology (ITEC); and Business Administration. In partnership with OYT, the home colleges have put together special curriculums during Summer Semester to allow students to easily add a minor without delaying graduation. Minors help students build new skillsets for their future careers, as well as giving a competitive edge to graduate school and job applications. Check out bit.ly/UofSCsummerminor to learn more about summer minors, and stay tunedmore colleges and schools will be adding minors to Summer Semester as well. Winter Semester Winter Session is three weeks of accelerated online courses taken over winter break. A variety of courses are offered, all of which are commonly required by many majors for degree completion. In 2020, over half of the students who took Winter Session courses were seniors, and in some cases was the difference between being able to graduate in the spring. SIMON TALLURI ‘22 “I found the MAIP (Multicultural Advertising Intern Program) internship opportunity through Handshake. The application process began with a resume and video submission, four essay responses, and two letters of recommendation. Through the career studio at the Career Center, I was able to receive assistance with my resume and essay responses, which helped to improve my language and professionalism. The Career Center also helped me with my interviewing skills, teaching me that ‘conversation matters more than just answering the questions’. Now I am officially a MAIP finalist!”

DEPARTMENT OF
Theatre & Dance
Main Department Office 803.777.5208 | 1300 Greene St., 4th floor Email: theatre@sc.edu | dance@sc.edu Website: sc.edu/theatre_and_dance
ONE DEPARTMENT, TWO DISTINCT DISCIPLINES We are one department working together, but our theatre and dance students are able to immerse themselves in their individual programs of study through performance spaces and opportunities not just for actors and dancers, but also for our scenic, costume and lighting designers, aspiring teachers, directors and choreographers. At UofSC, you can learn almost anything about the worlds of theatre and dance performance.
Theatre Program
However you express your love for theatre -- whether through acting, directing, design, technical theatre or stage management -- you can develop it in the UofSC theatre program. Our uniquely tailored approach marries classroom studies, studio work and practical experience in the area of your interest, resulting in a personalized program of study which challenges and develops your individual artistic talents. Each academic year, our four performance spaces (including the unique, in-the-round Longstreet Theatre) host a diverse slate of plays ranging from beloved classics to contemporary hits and experimental works. And, whether you want to be on stage, behind the scenes or in the audience, there’s a part for you! You don’t have to be a theatre major to audition, work backstage or, in many cases, take one of our classes.
Dance Program
Recognized by Dance Magazine as one of the top non-conservatory programs in the country, the UofSC Dance Program combines a rigorous dance classroom and studio environment to instill a sound foundation of guided practice in the disciplines of classical ballet, contemporary dance and jazz. On stage, we offer the best in classical and contemporary dance to performers and audiences alike. Our concerts, staged at Drayton Hall Theatre and the Koger Center for the Arts, present a wide-reaching repertoire by legendary choreographers and modern-day masters, as well as original works by faculty and our own students. Want to dance? Our first-level courses are open to all students and you don’t have to be a dance major to perform with our company.
SERIOUS ABOUT THEATRE AND DANCE? You can major or minor in either program! Get your: B.A. in Theatre B.A. in Dance (with emphasis in either Performance/Choreography or Dance Education) Minor in Theatre Minor in Dance

Sustainable Carolina Garden
Through our initiatives and programs, the Office provides engagement opportunities to educate and develop student leaders and connect formal learning with beyond-the-classroom experiences. There are many ways to get involved including participating in student organizations like Sustainable Carolina, the Student Council on Sustainability, University EcoReps, or Green Greeks; initiating a sustainability related research project; or volunteering in the Sustainable Carolina Garden. UofSC students will become experts and professionals who can combine their own specialized knowledge with that of others to solve complex economic, environmental, and social challenges. Sustainability is the framework we need to develop productive partnerships among disciplines, between schools and among campuses and industry to understand and address pressing global issues.
SUSTAINABLE CAROLINA
Sustainable Carolina is the student organization branch of the Office of Sustainability. Sustainable Carolina Peer Leaders work on six different project teams to address sustainability problems on campus and host programs and events to raise awareness about sustainability issues.
Sustainable Carolina Project Teams 1 Green Certification - Engages with campus offices, clubs, and
organizations to promote sustainable practices in offices & events
2 Events & Outreach - Plans and coordinates events throughout the year that explore the different facets of sustainability
3 Zero Waste - Explores and promotes innovations and practices to reduce the amount of material sent to the landfill
4 5 6
K-12 Outreach - Engages with local elementary through high school students to promote sustainability literacy Food Systems - Shares knowledge to raise awareness of and promote a connection to local food systems Garden - Produces hyper-local fresh seasonal produce using permaculture techniques
Initially begun with a few student garden boxes in 2007, the Sustainable Carolina Garden is now a successful student-run urban permaculture garden. The Garden fosters student development outside of the classroom through service, leadership development, teaching and entrepreneurship while promoting healthier, more sustainable food systems locally. Student “Garden Guides” coordinate daily volunteer shifts for all experience levels.
Sustainable Carolina Leadership Program (SCLP)

Students in the SCLP develop leadership skills through handson, practical experiences. Students from a diverse array of majors develop an understanding of how sustainability relates to their career and educational goals. The SCLP gives students the opportunity to complete the requirements for Graduation with Leadership Distinction no matter their field of study or interests. We as Gamecocks are dedicated to identifying and responding to the new normal under the presence of COVID-19. Moving into the fall semester, the University of South Carolina will continue their commitment to a safe campus community as they have done for the past year. South Carolina is devoted to caring for the community outside of our campus— the City of Columbia is at the heart of who we are and our identity as Gamecocks. As a university, we are proud to support the local businesses within our community just as they have been dedicated to supporting our students for years. The businesses and companies based in Columbia have a long history of providing for our students in our everyday lives and through our hardships—and we intend to do the same for them. Throughout this global pandemic, the Columbia community of businesses and services have continued to serve the city and our Carolinians. They have worked tirelessly to assist the university in any way possible and for that, we are eternally grateful. We are proud to have some of these businesses and resources listed within our Garnet Guide and we recommend you explore them and all they have to offer once you arrive on campus. From a variety of goods and services these partners can provide, we guarantee that you will find support from them throughout your time at South Carolina and see how fundamental they are to the fabric of our community. However, the pandemic has negatively affected our off-campus partners and their operations in a variety of unforeseen ways. These partners are integral to our community and we wish to see them continue to flourish as they work to overcome the challenges that COVID-19 has set forth. Once you arrive in the fall and begin to explore all that these partners have to offer, we are sure you will see how they serve our wonderful community and why it is so important to continue to support them through these unprecedented times. The City of Columbia is an amazing, vibrant and supportive community that we are confident will be the perfect home for the next few years of your life. On behalf of all of our off-campus partners, we are so excited to welcome you into our community and cannot wait to support you through your entire time here at South Carolina!

LOOKING
Forward Many Gamecocks choose to live off-campus at some point during their time at South Carolina. Searching for off-campus housing can seem very daunting, but in this section we will provide you with a list of tips and tricks that can make the search all the more easier. In addition, we have also included a few of the apartment communities located in proximity to our campus.

OFF-CAMPUS
Tips and Tricks
You’ll make many big decisions within your time here at South Carolina. Living off-campus can be one of them. We know that choosing a place to live and signing a lease are equal parts nerve-wracking and exciting. The Office of New Student Orientation is here to make the process a little easier for you by offering a few tips to help in the transition:
TIPS FOR FINDING OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING Utilize the Off-Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations Office The Off-Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations website (sc.edu/offcampusliving)offers a number of resources when looking for off-campus accommodations. From finding roommates, to subleases, to housing, and even assistance with your local residence, the office aids in all your needs. Visit Student Legal Services It’s very important to know what you’re getting into when signing a lease. Student Legal Services can help with legal matters including leasing contracts, landlord problems and housing laws. Searching for a Place to Live and When to Start Looking Though some students will begin looking as early as the fall semester, you have plenty of time to find housing. Utilize the Garnet Media’s Garnet Living website (garnetliving.org), which provides options for college housing and rentals for South Carolina students. Be a Good Neighbor As a student here at South Carolina, you will be a representative of the school on and off campus. It’s important to take the time to get to know your neighbors, understand the expectations of living, and respect those around you.
102
OFF-CAMPUS
Tips and Tricks
Searching for Roommates All South Carolina students have access to their own message board through the office of Off-Campus Living and Neighborhood Relations. You can log in with your network ID and password and find another South Carolina student that is either looking for a place or already has a place that may fit your needs! Another way to find roommates is to join Facebook groups of your class to connect with others who may be looking for housing as well! Remember to take the time to get to know them before agreeing to live together. Transportation If you or your roommate(s) don’t have your own transportation, Columbia provides a route system under The COMET called “UofSC Transit” that travels throughout campus. They have 30 stops and are free with your CarolinaCard. Some apartment complexes also provide their own shuttles that take you to and from campus. Figure Out Your Funding Make sure to consider your monthly expenses when looking for options. A few expenses you may need to consider outside of your rent are utilities, groceries, parking, and laundry. The Student Success Center offers a 1:1 Money Management Consultation that is specifically geared towards moving off campus. Tour and Explore Places Make certain to tour your options so that you can get a real visualization of the place. Remember to research the area around your potential living space by using the Community Crime Map that is available on the Office of Off-Campus Living and Neighborhood Relations website or reaching out to the residents who already live there. Asking current tenants about the management of their apartment is key to seeing how management handles issues that may arise.

Summer Semester bit.ly/UofSCsummer Summer Semester is the perfect opportunity to catch up or get ahead in your degree. Summer courses vary in length and intensity, enabling students to custom-build a schedule that fits their academic needs while still allowing them to fulfill other summer commitments. While taking a full course load in the summer is the best way to graduate early, it is also a great opportunity for students to boost their GPAs with an additional class or two to retain a scholarship or to avoid academic probation. There are hundreds of summer courses available, many of which are on-line, so it is possible to be enrolled full-time and still go home (or anywhere) for the summer. Sunday Night E-mail Each Sunday evening you will receive a weekly e-mail from @UofSC. Be sure to read this e-mail so that you stay up-to-date on the news and events happening in and around campus. Supplemental Instruction sc.edu/success Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides peer-facilitated study sessions for students enrolled in traditionally challenging first- and second-year courses. Tiger Burn Tiger Burn serves as the kickoff to the South Carolina vs. Clemson rivalry week. This tradition dates back to 1902 when, after the Carolina-Clemson football game, Carolina students paraded through the streets of Columbia carrying a drawing of a gamecock standing overtop a fallen tiger. This nearly led to a riot between Carolina students and Clemson cadets until a committee with representatives from both schools agreed to burn the drawing. Today, the Carolina community gathers to watch as a large tiger built by students in the College of Engineering is set ablaze, signifying that the Gamecocks will win against Clemson once again.

Winter Session bit.ly/UofSCwinter Winter Session courses are three week accelerated on-line courses that are taken over winter break. Students can choose from around 15 courses, all of which are commonly required by many majors for degree completion, and use the opportunity to get ahead for the next semester. Due to the intensive nature of accelerated courses, students are advised to carefully consider if more than one winter course is a good option for them. In 2019, over half of students who took Winter Session courses were seniors, and in some cases was the difference between being able to graduate in the spring. Winter Session is designed to help students graduate on time.
