PhD spotlight: Evaluation of Risk Disclosure in Ghana Recent high-profile corporate scandals have highlighted the significance of risk disclosure. However, despite its importance, commentators state risk disclosure still does not meet users’ needs. This study investigates the extent of risk disclosure practices in Ghana and considers whether both corporate governance and firm characteristics influence corporate risk disclosure (CRD) practices.

The research also evaluates the usefulness of risk disclosure as perceived by accountants and financial analysts. The study uses content analysis and regression on 18 listed Ghanaian companies’ annual data from 2005–2014, as well as interviews with accountants and financial analysts to evaluate the perceived usefulness of risk disclosure practices. The findings show risk disclosure practices grew over the decade examined. Non-financial risks were disclosed more than financial ones in annual reports. In addition, only a company’s sector, as a firm characteristic variable, had a significant influence on corporate risk disclosure.

In terms of corporate governance characteristics, duality, foreign directors, board size, board tenure and concentrated ownership all had significant influence on CRD. The study also identified an expectation gap between preparers and users of annual reports in terms of both the objectives of risk disclosures and their importance.

PhD spotlight: Knowledge Creation without Deliberate Knowledge Management: A Case Study in an Innovative Firm For decades experts have claimed knowledge management is essential for organisational success. Many companies still seek to implement knowledge management systems to improve their knowledge base in the hope of generating innovation.

5 general macro-level patterns have been revealed. As a result, this research provides new insights into knowledge creation without deliberate management, and serves as a management guide that explains the essential elements an organisation should focus on from the outset. The research’s impact and relations are most pertinent for sharing new ideas and insights, and triggering innovation, and thereby devising a new approach to managing the invisible and the intangible.

Marketing, Events and Hospitality MA or MSc by Research/MRes/PhD Our specialisms are consumer culture and identity, digital environments, destination marketing and sustainable tourism. PhD spotlight: Customer Expectations of Employee Emotional Labour in Service Relationships Emotional labour is the management of feeling to create a publicly observable facial and bodily display. Many jobs contain an emotional component that goes beyond the normal burden on feelings caused by work, and require ‘emotional labour’. There are 2 often-cited approaches to emotional labour – surface and deep acting.

44

However, organisations misinterpret the essence of knowledge and strive to objectify everything to make it ‘manageable’. This leads to ineffective and cost-intensive knowledge management attempts that simply fuel information technology development. However, there are successful and innovative organisations with knowledge-intensive products that do not apply knowledge management. This research uses hermeneutic-phenomenology, to elucidate such organisations’ environment and structure, but also to understand employee and organisational behaviour.

Visit glos.ac.uk or call 03330 141414

This research examines the relationships between employee emotional labour, customerperceived interaction quality, and customer intention to continue the service relationship. Key findings demonstrate that employee deep acting relates positively with customer-perceived interaction quality; however, employee surface acting does not relate negatively. At a more specific level, the greater the customer expectations of deep acting, the more positive the relationship between employee deep acting and customer-perceived interaction quality, and the more negative the relationship between employee surface acting and customerperceived interaction quality. The lower the customer

expectations of surface acting, the more positive the relationship between employee deep acting and customer-perceived interaction quality. Higher levels of customer-perceived interaction quality then relate positively to the customer intention to continue the service relationship. This work helps simultaneously explore the flow of emotional labour from employees to customers and helps understand the service relationship holistically. Findings establish the importance of emotional labour and how it influences customers’ perception of their interactions. This knowledge is useful in building sustainable and fruitful service relationships for the benefit of the customers, employees and organisations.

The initial pre-thesis modular element lasts 12-18 months, after which you present your formal research plan. You then enter the thesis phase, which lasts a minimum of a further 18 months. At its conclusion, you present and defend a thesis in a viva voce exam. You achieve an understanding and perception of managerial work that is difficult to obtain by other means. The DBA provides a vocational and professional doctorate that’s better suited to your needs, and your industry, than a more traditional PhD. DBA classes are limited to a maximum of 20 participants, who benefit from a collaborative learning environment.

Dr Hassan Chizari Senior Lecturer in Cyber Security

Professor Shujun Zhang Professor of Computing and Technology

Dr Salah Al-Majeed Academic Subject Leader (Head) of Engineering Technologies

Hassan’s research has been published in more than 40 peer-reviewed articles, and he has worked on more than 20 funded research projects. His research interests are mostly on graph theory, randomisation and encryption in very small-scale computing applications, such as wireless sensor networks, body area sensor networks, and the internet of things.

Shujun has more than 30 years’ experience of engineering and computing research and teaching in higher education. He has published over 100 academic papers, contributed to 4 books and is currently co-authoring 2 research books. His main areas of interest include applied computing and innovative product design and development, including bionics engineering.

Salah has spent many years’ working in academia, research and management. His strong applied research underpins his approach to teaching and curriculum development, leading to excellent learning outcomes for students.

Cryptographic key

Research of bionic principle and key technologies for cell-pulsation-based health enhancement systems

Hassan’s latest project is a collaboration with Imperial College London funded by Innovate UK. He examines how, from a physiological signal, a sequence of strong random numbers can be extracted to use later as the cryptographic key for secure communication between implants inside the body and its external gateway.

The health of living organisms is dependent on a cell’s condition and research shows that the more energetically a cell pulses, the healthier it is. This project employs scientific and engineering theories to study the relationship between electromagnetic signals and cell pulsations, with the aim of developing bionic technologies to enhance cell pulsations and, hence, their health.

Salah’s research combines various areas of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), including Smart Cities, Cyber Security, Health Informatics and Biomedical Engineering. Artificial intelligence and electric vehicle charging Salah is supervising 3 PhD students in the following research areas: Security for System on Chip IoT, using Cryptography Primitives at the Perception layer. Implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Blockchain for the Business Process Management in the public sector Organisations in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This includes the definition of a 3D scene in the framework, integration of 3D objects, cameras, transformations, light models and textures in a 3D scene, and the rendering of 3D objects on the web page, allowing the end-user to interactively manipulate objects on the web page.

Technical and Applied Computing MSc by Research/PhD Our specialisms include applied computing, artificial intelligence, cyber security, big data and data mining, business intelligence, e-business technology, application and management, IoTs, IT and IS, e-learning and digital forensics, and system modelling. PhD spotlight: A Model-based Method Design for Optimising Diesel Engine Emissions through Nonlinear Model Predictive Control In 2015, revelations regarding VW (Volkswagen) sent shockwaves around the industry, though diesel had already been receiving negative press across Europe.

62

There is rising demand for added and easier access to 3D content on the web. The better the browser experience, the more potential revenue that web-based content can generate. The main focus of this project is on the design, development and implementation of a new 3D generic modelling method based on Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) for web-based applications. While the model is initialised using classical 3D graphics, the scene model is extended using SVG. A new algorithm to present 3D graphics with SVG is proposed.

This crisis will continue to impact the diesel emissions industry and emission control strategies need to account for this. For diesel engines, EURO I to EURO VI legislative emission limits require the reduction of particulate matter by 80% and nitrogen oxides levels by 20%. Meanwhile, fuel consumption efficiency is still an important consideration for customers, given ever-increasing fuel prices. This project focuses on the design and development of a new algorithm for the optimal nonlinear model predictive control of the diesel engine air path system. Based on the measured data taken from the virtual test bench under near real load conditions, a linear parameter varying model is created and parameterised by dynamical

system identification. The databased modelling approach through an engine simulation platform and a model-based optimisation framework developed in this research are then used to design an innovative engine air path control concept that seeks to optimise the efficiency of engine air path system in terms of the intake manifold pressure and air mass flow tracking performance. The results clearly show that, compared to existing approaches, the purposed nonlinear model predictive control method provides a significant improvement in accuracy and computational efficiency for engine air path system control.

“As an experienced secondary school teacher, my interest in computing stems from its use to assist pupils’ development. I am currently researching how voice-user-interface devices might be used to augment teaching and learning and how a pedagogy of artificial intelligence might impact upon the epistemic curiosity of students of all abilities. Richard Cook Computing research student
