SENSE Magazine - The Hype Edition We of SENSE Magazine have come to understand that the line between generations is fine and easy to miss. No longer can it be expected for a child to need direction with new technology, and far less common to find an elderly man or woman struggling with their electronic devices. Understanding this has led us to believe that perspective matters. And we wished to interrogate the views our own generation hold near and dear to our hearts.

6 Cade W

What is Hype? Hype, as defined by the Cambridge English Dictionary, means ‘to repeatedly advertise and discuss something in newspapers, on television, etc. in order to attract everyone’s interest.’ To SENSE Magazine, Hype is the modern language of humanity. If a film succeeds or fails, the reason may not be for quality, but for quiet; whether people have talked about, and excited themselves, over the film or not. But for a spoken word, the world would quake.

2018 Rolls Royce Phantom Written by Mike Duff

do. The original Phantom was introduced

in 1925, and Rolls claims that makes it the longest-lived model name in automotive history. In truth, there have been some lengthy gaps between a few of the

generations, but this new eighth generation is directly replacing the current car, which

was the first BMW-developed Rolls-Royce.

nearly entirely new. It sits on Rolls-Royce’s officially dubbed the Architecture of

Luxury, which will go on to underpin all of the company’s forthcoming models,

including the Project Cullinan SUV. The

140-inch wheelbase is slightly smaller than the previous car’s, and the overall length

of 227.2 inches actually has shrunk by 2.8 inches for the standard-wheelbase

version, although you wouldn’t accuse it of having less presence. (As before, an

extended-wheelbase version for long-

legged plutocrats also will be offered.)

Suspension elements are mostly aluminum, Note: the Rolls Royce features a night vision and thermal camera to look out for nightlife that the driver may be unable to see

with electrically controlled air springs, active anti-roll bars, and adaptive dampers

describes as its Magic Carpet Ride. It uses a

road-scanning camera system to prepare for bumps before they reach the wheels.

experience it from the rear rather than the front.

The cabin retains many traditional touches, including rotary controls for the heating

and ventilation system and the denial of a

traditional tachometer in favor of a Power Reserve dial in one of the three circular

instrument bezels. (Although these look

a toughened glass panel spanning the top of the dashboard and instrument panel;

so that individually commissioned pieces of artwork can be displayed within it. Some

Tesla Model 3 (2018) Written by Tom Randall It’s finally here: The Model 3, Tesla’s $35,000 electric gamechanger. A single black

Model 3 rolled off the production line Friday with a serial number all its own, kicking off

a company-defining six months. The car will belong to Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO and cofounder, who shared images of it on Twitter over the weekend.

Tesla has already taken in roughly half a

billion dollars in Model 3 deposits, at $1,000 apiece, and its proposed ramp-up schedule would have it rivaling well-established U.S. market peers like BMW and Mercedes by

year’s end. The only thing standing between Tesla and being the world’s first mass-

market electric carmaker is proving it can build, deliver, and service enormous numbers of these vehicles without sacrificing quality.

The production acceleration will be slow

at first. Tesla plans to hand over the keys

to 30 cars at a launch celebration on July 28. It then envisions building 100 cars— less than three a day—for the month of August, according to a series of Twitter

posts by Musk last week. September will

bring another 1,500 cars, and the ramp will build to a rate of 20,000 cars a month by

One down, millions more to go.

December, Musk said. It’s an aggressive

schedule that will more than double Tesla’s total production rate in six months, and

then quintuple it by the end of next year.

THE GAMING HYPE the skyrim success

-Rebecca Hancock, 2017

The thrill. The excitement. The tingle of quests unfinished, of a kingdom to save. This is everything and less than this player experienced upon first unleashing the numerous worlds of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Released on the eleventh of September, 2011, Skyrim took the gaming world by storm and continued the rampage of medieval rpg games for the next few years. Using the original sandbox-styled world, the main character may

choose to follow any quest that intrigues them.

Though plagued with glitches and bugs in the system with the necessary early release to meet the advertised deadline,

“Skyrim is easily one of if not THE best games I’ve ever played, and I’ve played hundreds,”

players from all consoles and genres were absorbed into the gorgeous visuals and engaging gameplay.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may also be included as a modern example of hype that works. Both for the consumer, and the producer, the excitement and fun involved in this gaming series has led hundreds to develop their skills in many areas directly because of Skyrim. A form of interacting with video games that has grown in popularity over the past decade is the art of modding; modifying an original product to better suit the player. It may come as a shock to the average person, but copyright isn’t something that Bethesda chases down to the letter very often. The company practically thrives on Modders and their unique ability to renew a game that is now six years old. To mod is to change. If a player has replayed Skyrim for the umpteenth time and tires of, say, the many dragons out for human and elf blood throughout most of the main storyline... what can they do? Well, perhaps they could transform dragons into something elsesomething new. Thomas the tank engine, anyone? Or maybe the Macho Man dragon is more your style. “Yeah, brother!”

What about the visuals? There’s hundreds of mods to choose from, from the cartoony to the photorealistic, and new ones are being made all the time. Bethesda has provided an additional tool called the Creation Kit to help this along, and now even new designers have the freedom to make changes to their most beloved video game. But how does this relate to hype? Well, it is a rare example of a franchise that only produces a main title once every 5 or more years, yet retains its huge following every time a new game comes out. How does Bethesda hold such sway over their fans, even when they demand patience for several years, even when the visuals, the music and the gameplay of the latest installment has lost its shine compared to the fancy new titles being released by other companies?

Overhauls. Bug patches. New werewolves, new dragons, new horses, more quests, fan-made DLC. Companions, weapons and armour. Nothing is safe from the everincreasing skill and entrepreneurial spirit of the modding community.

“...Even new designers have the freedom to make changes to their most beloved video game.”

It’s the reward of this well-made video game that has encouraged people to stay a while. When expectations and excitement are met or exceeded, confidence in the producer grows and a franchise may continue. Rather than slowly dying out as time and entropy eat away at the gaming population, the hype for the sixth installment of The Elder Scrolls builds and builds the foundations of new developing artists and coders, the de-facto investors in a guaranteed explosion of future sales.

FEATURE BY CADE WHITE

THE SPORTS HYPE Rex Marechal started his career hand

shaping in the late 70’s in Southern California. After a long internship with some of the most prestigious factories in San Diego as a shaper, glasser, and sander, his surfing was blossoming on his own crafts. He quickly became popular for his shaping skills and started his own label in 1982. Now well into his third decade, he has had the opportunity to shape for some of the world’s best labels and surfers with great success. Due to Rex’s ability, he has ghost shaped (shaping boards for other international labels to distribute) for a number of the worlds largest surfboard labels such as Channel Islands, Chilli, Xanadu, Eric Arakawa, Pyzel and Webber (to name a few) and his experience shows in the end product. The reasoning behind these partnerships is Rex’s developed shaping style and ability to produce infinite board shapes. Moving to Australia in 1994 and starting his own label RMS, Rex was able to build

one of Australias most renowned board brands. Mixing the old-school with the new, Rex’s foundation of shaping skills

have earned the respect from his peers and customers. Rex has also gained an educated understanding in CAD shaping and designing technology, which he embraced very early in it’s introduction. Rex is tune with all of the latest developments in the industry. And as an accredited owner and operator of the AKUshaper system.

“Shaping someones board can be a daunti n g b u t its all worth i t when t h e y s a y there stoked with how it turned out. - Rex Marechal

Being able to use the AKUshaper

system allows total customisation and creativity in the boards creation. You really can trust Rex to design a craft suited to your needs and specifications. The software that runs with the large machine makes every element of the board creation progress extremely accurate. This system allows Rex to complete analytics on volume, centre of mass, width, thickness and rocker measurements calculated through the entire board. All the boards are hand finished and shaped off by Rex in his state-of-the-art factory on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia. And his staff of professionals in the glassing do the final glass work. Extremely passionate about surfing and surfboards, Rex strives for the best product possible and offers a complete range of surfboards developed for waves all over our globe.

“Its s a d see to companies moving their production overseas for financial benefits. Its only going to become more common if people are willing to waste their money on made poorly boards. I think its important people that are shown the quality between qualand ity quantity.”

Rex adding the finishing touches to the blank before it enters the glassing stage.

Recently Rex traveled back to his home of Southern California to complete in an invitational shaping competition. The ‘Icons Of Foam’ is a prestigious shaping contest that sees 11 of the worlds best shapers battle head to head to replicate an iconic surfboard from history with only minimal tools. This years task was to replicate one of Kelly Slaters contest winning board. The contestants only receive 5

minutes to measure the board and an hour and half to produce their closest product. Rex went on the win the contest and now has his name next to many shaping legends from the past.

As surfing becomes more popular its

becoming more and more common for surfboard labels to move production overseas due to cheaper manufacturing costs and labour. This is disastrous for the surfing community as quality control is the opposite of accurate. This shift also places strain on Labels such as RMS, but with this strain comes determination and is something Rex embodies. As Rex’s production rate increases so does his num-

ber of happy customers who continually return to place new orders. The more the orders are made the more creative Rex is able to become, shaping all types of surf craft from longboards to fish’s. Rex is continually growing as a shaper and the future looks bright. If he continues to expand his label and push the surf industry his current pace its cetain he will become an extremely recognisable symbol in the

australian surf community.
