Do We Need This War? It’s been three months since russia attacked my Ukraine and this dirty and cruel struggle between good and evil began. You know who I’m talking about. During this time, two thoughts do not leave me. The first one is how to remain a person who should work (preferably by profession), take care of the family, be grateful to our guys for their success in the war. And the second one is how not to stay for the last years of your life a person with a sense of hatred, malice and rage. Because I am a mature, experienced, intelligent person, cannot find the answer to the seemingly simple question: why do we need this WAR? A profession holds. All these days, despite the fact that the magazine editorial staff was scattered in other cities and countries, we work. We keep in touch with each other and with our partners in Ukraine, helping them informationally. We keep in touch with the national packaging associations from the Netherlands, Latvia, Poland and other countries, the colleagues from Packaging Europe, Nord Emballage, VerpakkingsManagement, Swiat Druku and other magazines, we meet with packaging companies in Poland and other countries, we interview for Packaging and talk about the successes and problems of packaging in Ukraine at conferences in Amsterdam and Cologne, Warsaw and Milan, we discuss assistance to Ukrainian packers at the meetings of the international organizations like World Packaging Organisation and European Packaging Institutes Consortium. We supported the initiative of The Netherlands Packaging Centr and the Packers Club of Ukraine to establish the project «Supporting the Ukraine Club of Packagers” (see and read about all our activity on www.upakjour.com.ua). We do not forget about our own projects. With the help of the Polish Chamber of Packaging, a jury meeting was held and the winners of 24 competitions “Ukrainian Packing Star”, “Ukrainian Label” and “Packaging of the Future” were selected (read about the results of the competitions in detail in this issue on page 41). This year we have prepared and published the second issue of Packaging, which was sent in electronic format not only to our subscribers, but also to our partners – the packaging companies in Ukraine and other countries. By the way, The Netherlands Packaging Center and Poznan School of Logistics helped us print several dozen numbers. And now you can read the next, third issue of Packaging. As for the answer to my question, as they say, time will show. In time my Ukraine, our Ukrainian soldiers, our Ukrainian people who will receive an undeniable victory in this reckless massacre. Ukraine is above all! Glory to Ukraine! Thank you for your understanding and support Kryvoshei Valerii, Ph.D. in Chemistry

TREPKO S.A., the Polish company with a one hundred years history, is one of the leading manufacturers of packaging equipment. An individual and flexible approach to each project, systematically extended machinery and investments in human resources allow the company to be one step ahead of the competitors. While being together with the magazine editorial staff in Poznan and preparing the next issue for publication we received an invitation from TREPKO S.A. to visit the company and get acquainted with its operations on the packaging equipment market.
Having apprised the development of equipment in the production shops and departments of the company, we noted that TREPKO S.A. production includes all types of technological operations from filling, forming, wrapping products to inserting closed containers into group packaging and place it on transport pallets for the transportation to the trading networks. As a rule, the company uses a variety of shapes and sizes of PP and PET containers manufactured on injection, blowing and thermoforming moulding machines, as well as a variety of flexible materials, including multilayer ones.
So we are in Gniezno, where Anna Zabierek, the head of marketing department, meets us at the entrance to the main building, and Karolina Kozarovska, the leading specialist of this department, who became professional guides for us when getting acquainted with the company’s operations. Unipak Sp. z o.o., which is a company with a strong experience in developing and manufacturing of packaging machines, became a part of TREPKO GROUP in 2000. It all began back in 1919 with the manufacture of centrifuges for dairy farmers. Today TREPKO S.A. is a leading manufacturer and supplier of various types of packaging machines and complex packaging lines for food industry, primarily dairy and other types of products in Central and Eastern Europe.
According to Anna Zabierek, the current company’s strategy is to improve the quality of packaging lines and machines which meet quality and hygiene requirements combined with flexibility for individual and optimized developments designed specifically for the customers’ needs. “The company has a support team,” adds Karolina Kozarovska, “which is always next to the customer, who can receive technical support at any time, including the diagnostic of equipment via a special modem.”
Having visited the company’s packaging department, where equipment is collected and tested by experienced and qualified workers, you feel how many innovative developments are brought into each of its types. All devices, units and components are manufactured with materials of the highest quality. They are characterized by high efficiency and reliability as well as ease of use and long durability. This is achieved by a detailed control of different stages of the production that gives the customer confidence that the smallest parts are manufactured with extreme precision and quality. In addition to machines and devices which perform multiple functions
in the product packaging process, TREPKO S.A. renders technical consultations, manufactures spare parts, provides services in maintenance and equipment repair. Having spent more than an hour in the company and agreed on further cooperation, we left TREPKO S.A. for Gniezno with confidence that the company’s packaging equipment would be actively used in Ukrainian food industry. And this will be a powerful contribution to the reconstruction of Ukraine’s industry.

3’2022 packaging presentation
A Person of Results Who is in Love with Logistics After russia’s attack on Ukraine our magazine editorial staff had to leave Kyiv. I had to work in Poznan, and my first meeting with the packaging colleagues took place at Poznan School of Logistics (WSL), and the first colleague who met me there was a nice woman who spoke Ukrainian. Her story was interesting. She dreamed of becoming a good lawyer to assert people’s rights and help others fight for justice. Having graduated from the university in Ukraine with a degree in law and devoted 15 years of her life to this work, she found herself in Poland. And let’s give the floor to my new friend – Iullia Chaplia, who has qualified as a logistician and supervises the work with foreign students at WSL. Valerii Kryvoshei, Ph.D. in Chemistry – Iullia, how did you get the idea to continue studying and why in Poland? – How did the thought occur to me?.. Here it is worth telling a kind of backstory. In 2016, my family and I emigrated to Poznan, Poland. At that time, my children were still young: my daughter was four years old, and my son was two. I didn’t know Polish, I didn’t know what I was going to do here. I may say with certainty that emigration is a new life that begins. No one needs all the previous certificates and merits. It was impossible to find a job in my field of expertise without the knowledge of the Polish language, and the effect of “expectations and reality” sometimes confused me. It was very difficult! But I have a very nice and wise husband who
8
has always supported me and enabled me to get through . Personally for me, emigration to Poland is a step outside my comfort zone, it is a step that has helped me to reveal and get to know myself more, to think outside the “juristic” box in my professional life and see that I can work and develop professionally and in other areas. I began to think what I liked to do, googled “a dozen international professions”, took on each of them in my mind. Poznan is a huge student city, and among all the educational establishments it
www.packinfo.com.ua
was WSL that caught my eye. The WSL logo has two colors: rich yellow and blue, and this reminds me of the colors of our Ukrainian blue and yellow flag. – And what happened next? How did you become a WSL student? – By the entrance to WSL, I had been living in Poland for two years and knew Polish quite well. Therefore, I had already been prepared for the “gnawing polish granite of logistics science”. According to Polish legislation on higher education , a foreigner who has received full higher education in his country (for example, specialist qualification or a Bachelor’s Degree in Ukraine) can pursue a Master’s Degree in Poland. Therefore, I applied for a Master’s degree at WSL, enrolling in the faculty of Logistics in the specialty “Logistics of Enterprises”. – What was the hardest part of the first year of studying? – The Master’s degree programme in WSL lasts three semesters, that is, a year and a half. The most difficult in the first year of studying was learning, but it also was the most interesting. All the teachers are highly qualified specialists, professionals who provide the student audience with insider information from the labor market. I saw a completely different approach: the relevance and modernity of the didactic method, the practical orientation of training, the interest of teachers in the transfer of knowledge and professional experience to students. Each subject is divided into two parts including both theoretical and practical elements. And each of these parts is
www.upakjour.com.ua
taught by different teachers, sometimes even two or three. Each of them tells about the narrow specificity of the logistics industry which helps students to become good logisticians. During my studies, I did various logistics projects, analytical calculations of logistics processes, presentations on various topics in transport and international logistics, created marketing strategies for business, studied specialized information systems and programs and the other things. In addition, I wrote and defended my Master’s thesis. – Have your expectations been realized? – When I was studying in the second semester, I was offered a job at WSL – to deal with foreign students. Four years have passed since then. My expectations have been justified, indeed. I have a higher European education in a specialty that is among ten international professions, I have a job at the best logistics university in Poland and help young boys and girls, including from Ukraine, to enter our higher education institution and get the profession of the future.
– What is the difference in studying at universities of Poland and Ukraine ? – I have already told a little bit about the difference in studying, but there are a lot of kinds of things. For example, an academic year for Polish students begins on October 1, and ends on June 30. Students study only three days a week at WSL. It has been specially done for combining studying with practice or work. 85 % of our second-year students work, and most of them start a career in logistics. Each student has his own personal account on the internet platform WSLinternet and all questions can be solved online: order a certificate from the dean’s office or a book in the library, see the schedule of classes or the alternation of the teacher. All information about the course of study can be seen in your profile. We do not have grade books: teachers grade the student on the Internet platform. Another important difference is the attitude to physical education classes. It is a compulsory subject in the first year of study. Everyone can choose the sport they want to do. The choice of our students
9
3’2022 packaging presentation
includes football, volleyball, swimming, darts, tennis, bowling, shaping, etc. WSL is a private educational establishment on a fee paying basis. After signing the agreement, the student receives a personal bank account, into which he undertakes to pay for studying. WSL ensures that its cost will not increase throughout the academic period. There are no additional costs for “a gift to the teacher”, “juice for the examination commission”or “curtains”. There is no corruption here! Students have an influence on the learning process and the management decisions of the educational establishment. The Student Council, which also includes students from Ukraine, takes an active part in the life of WSL and the city of Poznan. It is very important! Especially nowadays when Ukraine has such difficult time: many of our students are engaged in volunteering and helping our compatriots. – Iullia, tell us about the main advantages for Ukrainian students studying at WSL. – Firstly is to find out about a new country, culture and people. Secondly, to obtain a diploma of higher education, which is valued all over the world. Thirdly, to gain real knowledge and a prestigious profession for life, because logistics has always been, is and will be. This is a profession without a validity period! New students from Ukraine come to us at the age of 17. For me, they are children who take the first step into adult social and professional life. Some of them have
10
never left their parents for more than one or two weeks. Of course, such moving is stressful, and everyone copes with it in their own way. I perceive our students from Ukraine as my children, I try to encourage, support, help, prompt, advise. I worry about everyone as a mother of a large student’s family. Of course, for further integration into the Polish environment and in the educational process, the main thing is the knowledge of the Polish language. To enter WSL, we require a certificate of knowledge of the Polish language at B1 level. For all new WSL students we run a free intensive Polish language course in September, where they study logistics and technical terminology. During this course, students can get to know each other, which also helps them in adaptation. In addition, during the first year of study, everyone can continue to learn Polish in additional free classes organized by WSL. It is important to form mixed study groups: Poles and foreigners study together. The Student Council holds various integration meetings, excursions, themed parties. All this helps students from other countries feel better in WSL environment and in Poland as a whole. – Are you satisfied with how your professional life is going and what are your plans for the future? – Yes, I am satisfied. WSL employs wonderful people: kind, cordial, open, bright. My students are the best in the
world! This year I have already seen my first “graduates” – those whom I took to study and who I have been caring for for three years. It’s a great feeling of pride for them! I watch them growing up, building careers, sympathizing with their defeats and rejoicing in their achievements. I appreciate it very much. I invite Ukrainians to study at WSL in Poznan with all my heart! What are my plans? There are many of them. I am a person who constantly learns and can’t keep still. I have many goals and objectives for this year and for the future. However, if you don’t mind, I will keep it a secret. I don’t like to show off my plans, I’m a person of result. For me, the result is when my activities have had a positive impact on the person’s life, for example, a student’s one. It inspires you to live, work and move forward. – Iullia, thank you very much for such a rich and frank conversation. In my opinion, your advice will be useful to young people who choose a profession and dream of gaining good knowledge in order to benefit people in the future. I hope that among the readers of our magazine, and it is read by many students of Ukrainian universities, there will be those who want to continue their studies at Polish universities, in particular, at WSL. From the Ukrainian packing community I wish WSL prosperity, and you personally – new good results in your life.

Valerii Kryvoshei, the chief editor of Packaging, made a report Packaging in Ukraine: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. The conferees paid special attention to the packaging development in Ukraine until February 24 this year,
Copyright Pim Ras/VerpakkingsManagement
For her part, Veronika Khalaydzhi told on behalf of the Club Packagers the participants and visitors of the exhibition about the Club’s activities in peacetime and now, about Ukrainian competitions for the best packaging and label which were organized and conducted under the circumstances by Regina Sirotenko the project manager of the club, about the magazine Packaging, the second issue of which this year has been prepared for publication by the copy editor Iryna Sereda and a designer Natalia Kruglyak, and published by our friends from NVC and Poznan School of Logistics. Of course, it was an opportunity to give the first-hand news about the high-capacity Ukrainian enterprises destroyed by the invaders, such as Vetropack Gostomel Glass Factory, Rubizhne Cardboard and Packaging Plant, Chernihiv manufacturer of plastic packaging Plast-Box, Coca-Cola plant near Kyiv, about enterprises located in the east, north and south of Ukraine, which do not work for a number of reasons, including the lack of raw materials, spare parts for equipment and the lack of workers who went to defend Ukraine. The footage of the destroyed packing companies, Ukrainian cities and towns had a great influence on all meeting attendants, clearly showed what the rashist orcs were bringing. The purpose of our speeches before the packing communities of different countries at such events is to persuade them, and through them the government institution of these countries, not to finance the war in Ukraine, working with russian companies or buying russian goods.

The Conference and Warsaw Pack Exhibition The VII Warsaw Pack exhibition took place on April 25-26 in Warsaw. More than 200 companies from different countries gathered to show their innovative achievements in packaging. More than 12 thousand visitors for three days got acquainted with the latest developments in six thematic sectors of the exhibition: packaging and labeling; packaging technologies; marking and printing; packaging automation; e-commerce; logistics and product storage. Among the exhibitors there were companies from Ukraine. LLC Lutsk Cardboard and Paper Mill demonstrated a variety of certified quality corrugated cardboard products, and the Ukrainian Green Packaging Solutions Group introduced specialists to the possibilities of making paper and cardboard products. The Polish Packaging Chamber participated in the exhibition and Lodz University of Technology organized and held a conference “Innovations in Packaging”. The Club Packagers was invited to participate in the conference.
watched with horror slides of the destroyed Ukrainian packaging companies, listened to a story about the work of the Club Packagers (see www.upackjour.com.ua) during the past two months and received information about plans for the future. The conference featured speeches by Maciej Na cz, an analyst at Bank Polska, with a report entitled The packaging industry in 2022 - state, perspectives and impact of war and Andrzej Kornatski, the regional manager of Futamura, with a report on How to make flexible polymer packaging recyclable?. In general, the exhibition made a pleasant impression by participants’ and visitors’ activity, the excellent work of the organizers and certainly the latest achievements of packagers.

The Club Packagers at Anuga FoodTech The Club Packagers, continuing to work actively in the information space, took advantage of the invitation from Packaging Europe and NVC colleagues to present the Club at Anuga FoodTech and take part in the “Sustainable Packaging Summit”conference. The Anuga FoodTech exhibition in Cologne on April 26-29 this year was visited by more than 50,000 specialists
who got acquainted with the exhibits of 1,656 companies, 65 % of which came to Germany from other countries, including Ukraine. They presented innovative technological developments throughout the product value chain: from production technologies to packaging ones, from packaging materials to digitization and logistics. It should be noted (and it is important) that the “Sustainable Packaging Summit” conference began with a speech by Veronika Khalaydzhi, who answered numerous questions which were interesting to colleagues from other countries: how the russian invasion affected people working in the Ukrainian packaging companies; what is the impact of the war on the Ukrainian packaging industry; what problems do the Ukrainian packagers face; what support do they need; are there any difficulties in the packaging manufacturing due to problems with the raw material supply? Representatives of European companies were interested in the development of sustainable packaging in Ukraine, the attitude of our manufacturers to the impact of used packaging on the environment and many other questions,
www.upakjour.com.ua
on which they received comprehensive answers. The main topic of the conference was packaging, and the discussion between the representatives of Wipak and Stora Enso revealed the main principles of sustainable development of these companies. The representatives of Constanta and Mondi made interesting reports. During the event organized by NVC, Veronika Khalaydzhi acquainted the audience with the development of the packaging industry during the 30 years
of independence, with packaging and labels patterns, which won 24 Ukrainian competitions “Ukrainian Packing Star” and “Ukrainian Label”, with packaging professionals training in Ukrainian universities. Together with NVC, the Club continued the “Support the Ukraine Club of Packagers” campaign in Cologne. Despite the assault of russian aggression on Ukraine, the packaging industry continues to promote its products to European markets by all available methods. Thus, a collective stand was organized at the Anuga FoodTech exhibition, where the machine-building company Novy Vik, the manufacturer of sausage casings Belkozin Ukraine and other companies were presented.
WPO meeting at Ipack-Ima in Milan At the beginning of May, processing and packaging exhibition Ipack-Ima was held in Milan, Italy. It was during this exhibition that the World Packaging Organization WPO held its first “live” events. This is an awarding the winners of the WorldStar 2022 competition and the meeting of the WPO board of directors,
13
where one of the issues on the agenda was a voting for the resolution proposed by the European Packaging Institutes Consortium (EPIC) condemning russia’s war against Ukraine. The Packages Club is very grateful to our European colleagues from EPIC for the opportunity for the president of the
association to attend these important events for Ukrainian packagers thanks to funding from the Consortium Fund. On May 4, 2022, WorldStar 2022 award ceremony was held at the Fiera Milano exhibition center. Among 240 participants from 36 countries, two Ukrainian companies won this prestigious competition: LLC ISPE ARIS LTD for a doypack with a transparent window for aggressive ingredients and LLC Inpak for a disposable polymer container with a seal and a watertight lid. Both companies participated in WorldStar for the first time and immediately received high recognition for their work. Unfortunately, company representatives were not able to participate and receive prizes personally. Announcing the winners from Ukraine, the host of the ceremony, the secretary general Johannes Bergmayr, said: “Now
14
the awards will be given to a country that has already won our competition and will definitely defeat the russian aggressors.” All participants of the ceremony were applauding while receiving awards from the President of the Club Packagers. The next day, the 107th meeting of the WPO Board of Directors took place. The agenda usually consists of key issues: reports from the resident, the secretary general and representatives of the educational working groups, marketing, sustainable development, and the admission of new WPO members. At the 107th meeting, EPIC members, with the participation of the Club Packagers, prepared and put to the vote a resolution on the WPO’s position on russia’s attack on Ukraine. As the organization includes countries that are in a state of confrontation and have claims against each other, the discussion on the resolution turned out to be heated
and protracted. For the first time in 25 years, the vote was secret. In the end, the EPIC resolution was adopted by an overwhelming majority. Here are its provisions: 1. WPO condemns and opposes russia’s military action in Ukraine. Those WPO members who do not agree must voluntarily terminate their membership in WPO. WPO members who risk security, liberty, or even life by expressing their views openly but agreeing with the resolution are encouraged to contact the WPO secretariat directly to obtain anonymity. 2. WPO will take immediate action to develop and implement a mandatory Code of Conduct according to generally accepted requirements for transparency and business conduct. This Code of Conduct will be submitted to the first meeting of the WPO Council after the meeting in Milan on May 5, 2022 for approval by WPO members. 3. The WPO immediately (i.e. from 5 May 2022) terminates all kinds of cooperation with (former) WPO members who do not agree with Resolution 1 until further notice. In particular it concerns the organization of the World competition “Packing Star”, the World competition “Start”among students, the development and implementation of educational and training programs, as well as the members of WPO qualitate qua in conferences and exhibitions. This is another step towards our VICTORY.

3’2022 packaging war Empty, but Meaningful Stand During a quarter of a century, PLASTPOL Expo in Kielce has been a meeting place for companies and professionals in the polymer industry in Central and Eastern Europe, a dialogue platform for Polish and global companies working in the plastics processing sector. The exhibition brings together representatives of all business groups: distributors, manufacturers of polymer materials and equipment. has great damage and losses after the temporary occupation of Irpin by russian invaders. Negotiations were held with everyone about the current situation in the companies and about further cooperation. Ukrainian flags or #StandWithUkraine stickers were placed on the stands of many companies. An empty stand of ELBI-Wroc aw Sp. z o.o. in the colors of the Ukrainian flag stood in the middle of one of the exhibition halls. The following letter was read at the stand: “Dear customers, we would like to apologize for our choice of the type of stand you saw here in Kielce. We have been participants of the PlastPol fair for 22 years. Here we established business contacts, witnessed how you get stronger. We have always been proud of every moment when we were given the opportunity to support your initiatives This year PLASTPOL Expo exhibition took place on May 24-27, both the representatives of the Club Packagers and the magazine editorial staff of the Packaging can visit. Despite the difficult times, two Ukrainian companies – PlastMax Group and Prodekologia – had their stands at the exhibition. Companies continue to operate in their hometowns, providing employees with a salary paying taxes. The exhibition hosted meetings with Olena Reznikova, the director of the Resinex representative office in Ukraine, Serhiy Shomin, the director of Polystylex company, Serhiy Petrenko, the director of Technocom company, which

with our products and services. However, everything is different this year. Because 300 kilometers from here, bombs are falling on civilians. Because millions of people have been forced to leave their normal lives, their homes and often their loved ones. We cannot and do not want to be indifferent to these dramatic facts. We have admitted that today it is our duty to help those who, at the risk of their health and lives, are fighting for freedom and dignity. Therefore, we have made a decision that we believe will be understood by all our Partners: we intend to allocate funds that we provided annually for the stand organization, its work and other expenses, usually associated with the slogan on the stand, to HELP THE UKRAINIAN NATION. At the same time, we assure everyone that we will make every effort to present to you, our loyal customers and those who consider the possibility of cooperation our concepts for solving your technological problems as soon as possible. We will do it with the same dedication and professionalism that we have had for over 20 years. GLORY TO COURAGEOUS UKRAINE! Sincerely, Elbi-Wroc aw Bogus aw Birnbach” In response, we wrote: “Dear Mr. Boguslav, we, the Ukrainian packagers, are very grateful to you and your staff for your position and support. Your action reaffirms that business, whatever it may be, cannot be outside politics. And I am sure that with such support and help, we will definitely rebuild Ukrainian destroyed, stolen and burned packaging enterprises after our VICTORY! THANK YOU, POLISH BROTHERS! ”

Profession Adds to the Victory (Thoughts Aloud) Every person has a profession he likes more and which he goes to his own way. But when hard times come, especially those that have covered Ukraine today, everyone rallies to overcome them, including through their profession. Undoubtedly, the war with russia requires the usage of certain professional knowledge, skills and abilities in military professions. And Ukrainian soldiers with their skillful actions show the russian enemy who has better professional skills. And it is the best proof of our victory. Bad times united whole of Ukraine and Ukrainians to fight the enemy in their professional fields. Quality pursuance of their duties and tasks adds to the overall victory. The packaging industry is an expanded industry which needs specialists of various professions. The editorial board turned to well-known packaging specialists to tell about their feelings and real actions during the war, about plans and prospects for the reconstruction and the development of the Ukrainian packaging industry. Studying During the War Today’s reality is that we have changed the countdown: there are no days and months, we all count the days of our desperate struggle with the enemy. Everything has changed: the perception of reality, which seems like a horrible dream without ending; priorities that have become the only important thing – saving the lives of loved ones, although this concept has also changed, because the heart bleeds and grieves a lot for all those who protect us and suffer from the war. We have gone through the shock of the war, and now we have to adapt to a new reality, mobilize all our resources and do everything for our victory, each in his place. I was glad to receive the news of the renewal of the educational process at the university after 24 days of the war. Of course, there was an understanding that it would not be as before. But the opportunity to be engaged in useful creative work looked like an escape from great stress and despair. Studying during the war is first of all means support, open communication, and only then – the educational process. When we first saw the students via zoom conference format, it was hard to restrain our emotions and excitement. The lecture began with a discussion of the conditions the students found themselves in, their technical capabilities and life circumstances, which is very important for the proper organization of the educational process and adjusting the requirements

for the format of practical and laboratory work. After the first lectures and practical classes the understanding of the necessity to change the emphasis and priorities in the learning process came. Currently an individual approach to each student with considering the objective conditions and capabilities, as well as psychological and
emotional state has become a priority. Evidentially, we have to look for the ways to encourage studying. The motto that academic success is our contribution to the victory proved to be very effective. I regularly post news from our educational front in telegram groups: who did the work first, who scored the most points and became the leader of the group, and so on. And together we dream about what we will do after the victory: about excursions to the enterprises of the packaging and printing industry, about meetings with our foreign friends in Berlin. Dream a lot. And the most important thing is faith that they all will come true!.. Nataliya Kulyk

war packaging 3’2022 The Actions in Accordance with the Emergency Situation On February 24, the company was overloaded with orders for the next month and operated around the clock. An annual plan was drawn up, the budget and the development plan were approved. Shortly before that, we had received a new printing equipment and planned to install it. Both HACCP certification and ISO 9001 were planned to be confirmed at the beginning of March. We were preparing for the construction season intending to complete the building of our factory. At the same time, there was a feeling of anxiety and approaching of some events... We even declared how to act in case of a state of emergency or a war. Personally I supposed the conduct of russia’s aggression against Donetsk and Luhansk, but not against Kyiv, Sumy or Kharkiv. Everything became obvious at five in the morning on February 24. We woke up from powerful explosions. The question “What happened?” didn’t come up... At about seven in the morning I phoned the department managers and announced a non-working day then gathered the managers at the company at nine. It was decided to stop the company’s operations, turn off the energy sources and temporarily close down the production. At that time russian troops were at a distance of 5-7 km from us. The next few days I was in a state of stupor. A person by nature has three strategies of

behavior in a state of emergency: beat, run or freeze. Some people left the city in the first days of the war, because on February 24-25 the battles took place on the outskirts of Kharkiv and even in its central part. We closely followed the events in the news. Usually the screen time of using my smartphone fluctuated in the limit of 40-50 minutes a day, and in the first days of the war it reached the unthinkable 8!!! hours. The realization that the war may last long came on the fourth or fifth day. I turned to the staff explaining the issues of further actions as to the company’s operations, evacuation,
financial assistance, participation in volunteer programs. Cash flow almost stopped, and what we received was used to pay salaries to the employees. There was a feeling that life had shrunk to the size of a news feed, nothing else existed at the time. Air raids were annoying… At the beginning of March, there was an urgency to pack the MREs. Only we and an Israel company produced packages for this. We had the material ready, so we needed to find desperate people who were actually ready to work under fire. We got to the factory through three or four checkpoints under the question of fighters: “Where are you going?”. The order was fulfilled, but there was no transport to take it out. Nobody dared to go to Dergachi. I took it out by small “Fiat” several times a day. At the beginning of the war, we had a large enough quantity of finished products and materials in the warehouse, so we decided to dispatch everything possible. Finally, transport was found (for a lot of money), and we began to export products to a safer place. Flexores company in Lviv turned out to be such a place, I am grateful to our colleagues very much. Unfortunately, in mid-April, our factory came under enemy artillery fire. Lamination and package making shops were damaged. Thank God, there were no people at the factory at the shelling time. We are currently trying to work with colleagues who are in safer places, placing orders at their facilities. Some people understand the situation, being approachable, some people use it as a competitive advantage… We get a lot of support from our foreign partners. These are the words of support, the offers of financial assistance, and the invitations for the family during the war. In view of the situation in Dergachi, we have rented premises in a quieter (I can’t say – safer) part of the city, trying to move some equipment and materials here and resume production. We help our army and believe that the enemy will be forced back from Kharkiv in the near future and we will return to our factory. We have a lot of work ahead. Yevhen Tytarenko

3’2022 packaging war Everything Will Be Ukraine Until the terrible morning for all of us on February 24, UKRPEC Corporation was focused on fulfilling its planned tasks. This includes expert assessment and support of the framework project of Law “On Waste Management” (second reading), the participation in the Working Group of the Ministry of Environment on the preparation of the project Law “On Packaging and Packaging Waste”. In addition, the period of preparation for the establishment of the Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (hereinafter EPRO) in Ukraine continued and was accompanied by a pilot project on the organization of separate collection of packaging waste in Vyshhorod. It was planned exactly on February 24 to hold a conference with the participation of 11 companies to consider the project statute of EPRO. But... The news of russia’s attack not only turned all plans upside down, but also raised many questions, especially for experienced people. At that time, I thought that the invasion would be only for the purpose of occupying Donbass or, perhaps, the south-eastern regions. But I did not expect a large-scale attack on Ukraine from the very beginning. My first thought was “will they hit Ukraine with all their might or there will be some limits?”. Even then, after putin’s speeches on denazification, demilitarization, and other interpretations of his “historical” false views, I realized that there would be no framework.
The pilot project in Vyshgorod is ongoing
20
As the head of UKRPEC, I immediately talked to the staff about their intentions to move to safer places. They thought about how to keep the activities of the Coalition, its solvency and the main relationships with other organizations. It was necessary to ensure the salary payment to employees as well as the payment of required outgoings. As during the first weeks it was more or less safe in Kyiv, my family remained in the capital, but at the beginning of March we had to move to the west of the country. I continue to work remotely, we keep in touch with our employees and partners. We are working on the resumption of the pilot project in Vyshhorod, we are preparing the documents for the creation and registration of EPRO, we are monitoring the development of legislation. But I want to return home, because there are a lot of unfulfilled plans. We all believe that everything will be Ukraine. Volodymyr Slabiy
Professionalism as a Synonym for the Quality This year’s thirty-fifth educational and creative season, as always is implemented in a professional space that covers a wide range of the design aspects of a graphic design, where one of the integral creative positions belongs to a design of packaging. For the Workshop, no circumstances are an obstacle to creative communication and cooperation with their students, although they make it much more difficult to bring the job started earlier to the pre-planned completion. Something similar happened with the design projects of the third-year students, who were preparing to participate in the national competition “Ukrainian Packing Star”. On February 22, together we carefully and professionally identified the necessary ways of presentation for each of the projects under the terms of the
competition. It took almost two weeks. And the 24th day of February loudly exploded with completely new priorities on the current agenda and, it seemed, quite far away, and maybe forever pushed aside our intention. Somewhat later, received an invitation from the Ukrainian Club Packagers whose office hospitably encamped in Poznan, to the participation of students in the Workshop, a postponed competition, which would be held with the support of Polish colleagues-partners. Although the design packaging prototypes remained at the Academy, and their authors were “scattered” by the war in Ukraine and Europe, we had three creative meetings via Skype to create the visualizations of each project idea and send it to the competition. How is a student project born for potential competition in the special nomination “Packaging of the Future”? It would be completely naive and irresponsible, although it is common in oversaturated “design” of Ukrainian educational areas, to try immediately to “pack” something. If I may say such the study of design is far beyond the real profession, the final product of which, of course, contains a huge knowledge, intellectual component. An attentive, not indifferent to the world of things, modern person can not fail to notice the truly convenient smart packaging: from carefully thoughtout design features using innovative materials to the smallest, but necessary

and convenient little things that pleasantly surprise with ingenuity and appropriateness. And does the average user, taking in hand the packaged product, know to whom he owe the long-standing comfort in navigating among the endless competitive market offers? Is he aware of packaging materials and how they provide the most effective protection and goods storage, and in the meantime he also pays attention to the many design “little things” – components of packaging that allow easy and reusable usage? And did our dear consumer try to learn the secrets of professional integration of stylish design graphics with design, which together form a unique image of the brand, clearly identifying it? Our hypothetical user can live a completely carefree life without knowing anything about the powerful scientific and creative design activities of packaging industry, but how to understand an educational establishment which has boldly undertaken the preparation of professional designers and openly imitates their studying in the space of extremely requirement to the result? Why is it worth talking about? Submission of sample projects to the “Packaging of the Future” competition demonstrates a considerable flow of examples that sadly reflects the authors’ lack of at least some
www.upakjour.com.ua

basic knowledge for such work. There are some doubts about their mastery of professional competence on the program basis of preparation for design creativity, but by recommending projects for the competition, educational establishments at least confirm the understanding of their students with the parameters of the profession. It is known that the functional and aesthetic origins of a packaging design, like many other design products, are genetically rooted in the system of generic professional values of a graphic design, where the essential components
are non-trivial thinking and not only the high professional culture, where the prerequisites are natural curiosity acquired versatile erudition, as well as a clear motivation to achieve a quality result. A sense of kinship cultivated with the responsible mission of the profession, together with a wide range of thorough special knowledge, consolidated, tested and creatively integrated into practical tasks, can give students the necessary basis to work on a specific project content. Successful overcoming of a long and capacious study period in the Workshop (the first four semesters) provides an opportunity to synthesize the achievements of propaedeutic experience in a real project and currently it is the optimal route that leads to the goal: to obtain a quality result. Thus, the cross-cutting motive is the education of professionalism – an integral part of quality. And such a historical shock in the minds of Ukrainian society prompts us to resolutely reconsider the qualitative characteristics of activities in each segment of our lives. We have no longer the right to perceive neutrally the vague criteria of semi-honesty, semi-decency, semi-dignity, semi-professionalism… Having won the war, we will build a life of a new quality! IML labels (State and Perspectives) A. Kornacki, Futamura, Poland; V.M. Kryvoshei, Ph.D. in Chemistry, IAC “Packaging”, Ukraine Self-adhesive, shrink, sleeve-labels and pre-glued labels are used for the decoration of polymer packaging (blow moulded, injection moulded and thermoformed) At the same time, for all these types of labels, the decorating process is separated from the process of packaging manufacturing. However, there is another way to carry out both the decoration and the manufacture of packaging simultaneously on the same equipment: in-mould labelling decoration. This method has three types: for containers manufactured by injection moulding (IML), by blow moulding (B-IML) and by thermoforming processes (T-IML). The article considers all aspects of the polymer packaging decoration with an IML label: market, materials, technologies, equipment, advantages and problems of manufacturing and usage of this type of labels.
The IML labels market In spite of self-adhesive labels dominance on the polymer containers decoration market, the demand for IML labels among manufacturers of various products in all types of polymer packaging is growing. This is facilitated by the possibility of using polymer films, in most cases polypropylene ones with a variety of surface effects (“orange peel”, glossy, semi-glossy, matte, semi-matte, transparent), as well as the ability both to decorate polymer containers with
a)
a label and to make them on the same equipment simultaneously. Market analysis shows that most manufacturers of products that use polymer containers with a volume of 1-3 liters prefer matte IML labels (Fig. 1c). with “orange peel” effect (Fig. 1a). To have that effect, it is necessary to use a cavitated film. It is achieved due to the formation of cavities in the structure of the material during the supply of melt. Manufacturers who use containers with a volume of 3 liters or more to pack
their products use large IML labels with a glossy surface (Fig. 1b). A film with a solid structure is used for the achievement of a glossy effect. IML labels of this size are made of polymer film of the necessary hardness and rigidity. Such properties are required for designing labels with offset printing, as well as for maneuvering with a robot, when IML labels are placed into the mould of an injection machine. The film of such an IML label has a thickness of more than 60 microns provids more mechanical resistance to the molten

polymer during its injection into the mould. IML labels are widely used both for disposable packaging for building materials (paints, varnishes, variety of coatings, etc.), food and other products, and for reusable packaging (boxes, buckets, canisters). A packaging of different shapes is available on the market such as round, oval, rectangular, square. However, rectangular or square packaging has become more common (Fig. 2). It is the most economical, the space in logistics operations is better used during products storage in warehouses and its transportation. The implementation in practice of polymer containers decoration technologies with IML labels requires preliminary consideration and solution of at least three issues: selection of the necessary film, choice of the film printing method for IML label and preparation of equipment for the manufacture of polymer containers with its simultaneous decoration of the IML label. Polymer films for IML labels Different types of films are used in IML labels manufacturing for polymer containers decoration. Their choice depends on the visual final effect (“orange peel”, glossy or transparent), which the manufacturer wants to achieve when decorating polymer containers with an IML label. As a rule, polypropylene films
24
are used for the manufacturing of IML labels, from which polymer containers are mainly made. In this way it is easier to combine these materials together in decorating, as well as to dispose of and recycle them after using products. Most manufacturers of polymer films, especially for IML labels (such as BOPP films), use two methods of film orientation: on cast film extrusion lines and on blow moulding machines with a top to bottom blow-forming. On the horizontal lines there is an unbalanced stretching of the film: in the transverse direction (TD), the film stretches 9-10 times, while in the longitudinal machine direction (MD) it stretches only four times (Fig. 3). This leads to unbalanced internal tension, which can cause curl (“curling”) along the edges of films or cut labels. It affects the label loading from the magazine to the injection machine by the robot. The negative effect of such a curling may increase on the flexo printing machine, on which the film is wound on the sleeves of a small (76 mm) diameter. In addition, the film may shrink disproportionately that affects the dimensional change of the film and the blank for the label. Due to varying degrees of stretching, the films have different physical and mechanical properties in both directions. Besides, this method limits the maximum thickness of the film (up to 60 microns).
The properties of such a film in the central and middle parts of large rolls (6.5–8 m wide) differ from the properties of the film along the edges of the rolls. Blowing-molding technology allows to produce solid BOPP films with the thickness up to 110 micron. By this method, the process of stretching and orientation differs from the method on horizontal lines and gives the same value about 88 in both transverse and longitudinal directions. That is, it can be said that in this way films with balanced orientation in both directions (MD and TD) are obtained with the same internal tension (Fig. 4). This film is tougher and stronger. These properties are important when working with labels, as well as during the label lamination with the surface of the polymer container, which is formed from the melt in the mould. The technological advantages of such films are obvious. They have excellent whiteness, matte surface on both sides. Their surface is antistatic, perfectly perceives inks with deep, flexographic and offset printing. Moreover, one side of such a film has high adhesion to printing inks, and the other – firmly sticks to molten polypropylene in the mould of an injection machine. BOPP films can be additionally refined, significantly changing their natural properties. For example, their foaming, as a result of which microbubbles of air/gas appear in the film structure which increases its barrier properties, rigidity and changes its optical properties. Such a film is also called pearlized film. That’s what produces the effect of “orange peel”. Film surface with air/gas microbubbles inside is “deformed” during polymer melt injection (microbubbles “folded”),
Fig. 3. The scheme of BOPP film manufacturing on a horizontal line
www.packinfo.com.ua
packaging packaging 3’2022 and that’s what makes it possible to achieve this effect. The level of film foaming determined by its density, may be different depend on manufacturers. For this reason, the surface of such films may differ. Matte trim of the film on both sides reduces the friction coefficient of the sheets of the film, which reduces the charge of the film when it is stretched, printed and cut. Low static charge on the film surface improves the continuous operation of the machine, reduces the number of shutdowns. Matte coating reduces adhesion between the layers of labels, increases adhesion to inks, improves the work of robots regarding the labels placement in mould. They have greater repeatability and the ability to quickly leave the form after laying a loaded label in it. The technology of stretching and orientation of BOPP films on horizontal lines allows to produce solid/full (white, transparent) films up to 60 microns thick and foam/pearl films up to 75 microns thick. On the other hand, the blow molding technology allows to “flatten the cylinder” of the film, and then to laminate both its layers, as a result of which a solid film with the thickness up to 110 is formed. In addition to balanced internal tension, blow moulding films have another advantage, which plays a huge role in using them for large labels to decorate containers with a volume of more than 3 liters on injection machines. The film, which almost consists of two thin layers connected together, has a greater rigidity during “transfer” of sheets through an offset machine or during the label maneuvering by the robot. It is more resistant to cracking and breaking the label tearing during polymer melt injection, more uniform over the entire width of the roll and has a better controlled shrink.
Technological aspects of IML labelled packaging decoration There are two main technological processes when IML labelled packaging is decorated. The first one is printing films
www.upakjour.com.ua
and cutting labels. The second process is the direct packaging manufacturing with the simultaneous attachment of the label in the mould label at an injection, extrusion blow moulding or thermoforming machine. As a rule, BOPP films for IML labels are printed with flexographic or offset printing. At the same time, it is important to print at a slower speed so that the inks and varnish have time to dry. When the film is too wet, especially on the surface or – even worse – between the layers of paint and varnish, then when adding the polymer melt at a temperature of 200 °C in a mould containing such a label, moisture instantly “boils” and “explodes”. This leads to the formation of various undesirable defects. It is necessary to be careful during offset printing of film sheets. Sometimes on the lines where UV lamps are used for drying, film sheets can “lose” their size, which affects the next technological stages. The shape and size of the labels also impact on technical specifications with can be used when printing and cutting them. Small labels can be decorated with flexo printing, although there is a high probability of folding labels, and on sheets with offset printing. Large labels are printed on sheets with offset printing. Label offset printing has the advantage in that the rolls of the film are pre-wound on large diameter bushings (152 mm), which ensures the “flatness” of the sheets after their printing and does not cause the effect of folding the cut labels. After printing, the sheets of films are varnished over, and then dried with UV technology. Printing machines which use LED lamps for drying have already appeared on the market. The usage of varnish is necessary to protect the label from damage, scratches and abrasion. It should be noted that incorrect selection, applying or drying of varnish may also cause the edges of sheets or labels to be folding. There is a tendency to cover the films for labels with dispersion varnish more often than UV varnish. This makes it possible to • eliminate the unpleasant, specific “chemical” smell of the label;
Fig. 4. Scheme of BOPP films blow moulding
• obtain a certificate easier that allows the packaging to come into contact with food products; • get an effect close to matte, giving the impression of a more environmentally friendly product. The shape and size of the labels may vary greatly. They can be used separately only for the container side walls, they can cover two or four side walls, can be connected to each other by the “bottom” (“butterfly” or “Maltese cross”), they can be used for the lid and package bottom. The main technical problem of films for IML labels is the regulation and control of electrostatic charges that may occur during the film production, cutting rolls, printing, cutting labels and placing them in mould. They are regulated by the addition of antistatic additives to the polymer melt in the extruder. The film must be antistatic throughout all stages of the process from the film and label production to the moment of its removal from the magazine of the injection machine by the robot’s “hand”. But
25

Fig. 5. An injection machine (a) and a robot (b) used to place labels into a mould
then, already on the injection machine, it should be able to charge with a special electrode, which will allow the label to stick/weld to the wall of the mould in the injection machine. The environment also greatly impact on film sensitivity to statical electricity. Dry air aggravates this phenomenon many times. That’s why it is important to control air humidity during all technological processes. Now on the market there are devices that help maintain the appropriate desired level of humidity, which allows to control/reduce the film susceptibility to excessive statical electricity. In each company which deals with labels has to make a separate warehouse for labels storage and to provide there a constant temperature (approximately 25 °C) and humidity (about 50 %). Due to the necessity to charge the films with an electrostatic charge, the chance of using IML labels with metallized foil is not possible. To obtain a “metallic” effect, the technology of “cold stamping” which is already on the market can be used. The surface of the label on the unprinted side should be completely clean. Good contact of the introduced material with the surface of the label is a prerequisite for a good “sticking” of the label to the side of the container.
26
It may happen that the varnish, which covers the surface of the foil after printing, has dried poorly. Then, in some places, when winding the film (in flexography) or when laying sheets (with offset), it may stick to the unprintable side of the film. It is recommended not to use too high speed machines for printing. Offset printing houses dry printed sheets in small quantity placed on separate shelves of special cabinets. It is very important to dry well not only the outer varnish, but also the inks of all colors. Theoretically, the inks are between film and varnish. But later, during the injection, when the temperature of the molten polymer exceeds 200 ° C, moisture in wet inks can immediately “boil” and “explode”. In these places, defects will appear on the film. The main technological operation of decorating polymer package with IML labels takes place in Europe on injection machines, blow film extrusion and thermoformed machines. Most often injection machines are used (Fig. 5). It is enough to install a robot on them using a special attachment, which will take labels from the magazine and place them in the mould. Such robots are manufactured by specialized companies, and their installation is not difficult. It is important to take into account some features of this technology. The
label surface on the unprintable side should be completely clean. Good contact of the melt injected material with the label surface should provide the necessary adhesion to the package surface. Sometimes the coating varnish for the film dries poorly after printing. In this case, the layers of wound film after flexo printing or sheets of film after offset can stick to each other. Therefore, it is important to pay special attention to the process of drying inks or varnish, while using not very high speeds of printing films and drying them. During the production of different types of containers/lids according to the technology of injection, there is a problem of shrinking when they are quickly cooled after “leaving” the mold. In a situation where one of the surfaces/walls of a manufactured container has a label and the other does not have one, tensions arise from shrinking on surfaces opposite to each other are different. This effect is the cause of products deformation. During round containers manufacturing, the difference in tension between its opposite sides is insufficient to deform the walls. Some problems may arise in the production of square and rectangular containers. The degree of deformation here will depend on its size and wall thickness. The biggest problems arise in the production of covers with IML labels. Different tensions on both surfaces deform them. The degree of these deformations depends on the shape (round, oval, square, rectangular), the size of the lids, their thickness, the type of film used for the manufacturing of labels, the thickness and properties of the film, finishing varnish. End users often choose not to use lids with IML labels. The lids remain labelless or self-adhesive labels are applied. The decoration of polymeric packaging of different sizes and shapes its manufacturing with the usage of IML labels has wide perspectives. Scientists and technologists are working on new types of films for such labels, to increase their barrier properties, protect against damage, expand their use in shape and size.

Packing from a monomaterial Constantia Flexibles has introduced EcoLamPlus packaging for meat, cheese and dairy products. The packaging material consists only of layers of polyethylene, so its structure is monomaterial. This packaging reduces carbon emissions by almost 32 % and provides a high degree of humidity and oxygen barrier.
Packaging for sour milk cheeses Yagotynsky Butter Plant has introduced the production of a fermented milk product in a new package – stabilo bag, which is currently popular among both dairy producers and consumers. The main reasons for this are its convenience and economy. Two types of sour milk cheeses will be produced in a 350 g stabilopaсk package under the TM Yagotynske: 5 % and 9.5 % fat. The main difference between this sour milk cheese and other cheeses produced by the Yagotynsky Butter Plant is the structure and size of the “cheese grain”. Thus, in the packaging of stabilopaсk the consumer will receive coarsegrained sour milk cheese with a softer and gentler structure.

Bottle Box The Office for Logistics Research (Dortmund) has patented a transport box for reduced-volume bottles. Ordinary boxes containing 0.33 l long-necked bottles are had external dimensions of not more than 400300270 mm, in most cases. The Europallet can hold five layers of boxes with eight boxes per layer and 24 bottles in a box. In other words, each pallet can hold 40 boxes and a total of 960 bottles. To achieve the desired volume optimization, the number of bottles in the box was reduced from 24 to 20. However, each subsequent layer of boxes is placed on the previous one, deepening by 97 mm, which allows to increase the number of layers stacked on a pallet with the same stacking height to seven. This significantly improves the density of packaging on the pallet: in numbers, this means 56 boxes or 1120 bottles per pallet. In addition, the smaller number of bottles in the box provides ergonomic benefits throughout the supply chain, as its weight with bottles is reduced from 17.5 kg to 15 kg. Depth of laying of empty boxes is maked 121 mm and is reached by means of rotary stacking. This allows up to eight layers (64 boxes) to be stacked on the pallet at the same stacking height. This is 60 % more than conventional bottle boxes.
Eurocast has launched the Crysta-Line series, which uses transparent alumina coating technology. Among them is the Crysta-Lid film, which uses mono PET lidding film. This product, compared to generally available EVOHbased products, is characterized by low oxygen and water vapor permeability (OTR = 1 cm3 / m2 · 24 h; WVTR = 0.5-1 g / m2 · 24 h). This is due to the use of transparent alumina coating technology, which is a completely recyclable barrier. In addition, Crysta-Lid is characterized by perfect protection of packaged food, optimal sealing parameters (SEAL, PEEL) and excellent anti-fogging properties (AF option). The certificate issued by the cyclos-HTP GmbH Institute confirms 100 % recycling of the Crysta-Lid film, which can be used for many types of food.

Global Trends 2040 The US National Intelligence Service has published a very interesting document Global Trends 2040. It describes the key global trends that will affect our daily lives over the next 18 years. The first sustainable trend is demographic shifts and migration processes. In the developed economies of Europe, North America and East Asia, the population is rapidly aging, the share of young people and the birth rate are decreasing, and after 2040 they will begin to decline in population. It is expected that by 2040, the share of people aged 65+ will reach 25 % of the world’s population. At the same time, in the less developed countries of South Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, the share of the young working population will grow every year. It is predicted that by 2050, the population of Africa will double to approximately 1.4 billion people. At the same time, a significant proportion of these young people will not be able to realize themselves in local weak economies, and therefore will be forced to migrate to the countries of the socalled “Global North”, including Europe and the USA. The second global process is climatic anomalies. In the 2030s, an increase in the number of abnormal and extreme natural phenomena is expected, including hurricanes, droughts, melting glaciers, and floods. The main share of these threats falls on countries in which agriculture plays a large role, as well
32
as on poor states that do not have the infrastructure to protect themselves. For example, the strongest abnormal heat waves are expected in the near future in the regions of Central Europe, North America, South Africa and the Middle East. As of 2018, 36 % of cities around the world had systemic environmental problems. The third trend is economic transformations. In the USA, the growth of foreign debts, the fragmentation of trade and economic spaces, changes in labor markets due to the technological rivalry of the great powers and the emergence of new clusters of the economy and the creative working class are predicted. Since 2007, foreign debt has increased in almost every country, and the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many countries to borrow even more. The average share of debt in developing countries today is the same as it was during the debt crises of the 1980s and 1990s. Aging populations and demographic shifts are increasing the burden on public budgets, forcing governments to either raise taxes or reduce social benefits in the future. Both options will lead to social upheaval. According to some estimates, the introduction of artificial intelligence, robotization and digitization in various fields of work will create 97 million jobs, but at the same time will destroy 85 million. Such a transition will have its socioeconomic consequences.
The fourth trend is changes in social relations between the government and society. Decades of scientific and technological development have significantly improved the lives of most people on the planet, expanded their access to information, educational and medical services, and facilitated travel to other countries. On the other hand, these same innovations led to the gradual degradation of relations between the ruling elites and society. The latter has real tools for expressing their views, accessing data, influencing public opinion and politicians. All this together led to the growth of populism, nationalism and anti-elitist sentiments, which are often at the root of the protests of the last five or six years. As of 2020, 1.8 billion people on the planet, which is 23 % of the world’s population, lived in a «fragile situation», that is, in weak, vulnerable and unstable countries. By 2030, this figure will reach 30 % due to a number of problems affecting the relationship between the government and the population. The last important trend is changes in international relations. By 2040, no country in the world will be able to completely dominate alone. And so the international system will have the appearance of a multipolar world, in which there will be several regional and supraregional power centers competing for influence, resources and control. In such a world, there is a growing demand for strong, flexible and situational regional alliances.

and pharmaceutical goods. It is estimated that the production of wrapping paper has increased by 7.1 % compared to 2020. (2.1 % in 2019) reaching a record level. The production of cardboard for packaging has increased by 7.8 % and paper bags – by 11.7 %.
European Label Industry The demand for self-adhesive label materials increased by 7 % in Europe in 2021 almost to 8.5 billion m2, compared to 2020 (an increase of 4 %). However, the reasons for this growth in these years were different: if in 2020 excessive demand for self-adhesive labels was the result of demand for food, hygiene and pharmaceutical products, then its jump in the second and third quarters of 2021 was associated with an unexpectedly strong economic recovery observed throughout Europe. Meanwhile, after a general failure in the supply chains last summer, in early 2022, the labeling industry began to decline. Although the supply chain of raw materials for labels in early 2022 was relatively successful, this trend was
Mergers and Acquisitions of Packaging Companies According to an expert analysis of GlobalData Insight, in the global packaging sector the constant mergers and acquisitions of packaging companies occur (Fig. 1). The number of M&A transactions increased by 31 % from 355 in 2020 to 465 in 2021. The value of concluded transactions increased by 3.7 %: in 2021, transactions in the amount of $ 17 billion were concluded compared to $ 16 billion in the previous year. 500

The Confederation of the European Paper Industry (CEPI) published statistical data on the paper and cardboard market in 2021, while in 2020 the consumption of paper products decreased by 6.6 %, the sector is showing the signs of a strong recovery now. In 2021 the paper and cardboard production in 19 CEPI member countries increased by 5.8 % compared to the previous year. Total production reached 90.2 million tonnes in 2021 with an increase for almost all types of paper and cardboard in line with the growth of the EU economy. In 2021 EU GDP grew by 5.0 % which contrasts with the decrease recorded in 2020 (–6.1 %). This recovery is also observed in most countries of the world. China, the United States, Japan, India, Korea and Canada recorded a 2–7 % increase in paper production. The usage of recycled paper in the CEPI member countries has increased by 5.3 % compared to 2020 reaching a record level of 50.5 million tons. In addition 96 % of European recycled paper is supplied to the domestic market. The pandemic and changes in a society have affected the availability and quality of recycling paper. Its export has decreased by almost 25 %. According to the latest available data, the total consumption of paper and cardboard in the CEPI member countries increased by about 5 % in 2021 compared to 2020. The economic environment contributed significantly to the increase. The crisis and temporary constraints have accelerated the changes in the consumption patterns and will have a lasting impact. The development of e-commerce has influenced the increase in the usage of packaging paper and cardboard. Consumption of sanitary and hygienic and household paper has decreased by 4.1 %. The demand for the most ecological packaging and the ability to recycle paper and cardboard have made these materials popular among consumer-oriented carriers. Paper and cardboard packaging is now used in various industries, in particular for packaging food, medical
unlikely to continue in the next quarters of 2022. The constant shortage of selfadhesive materials can seriously harm the label production for food packaging, pharmaceutical, medical and logistics industries throughout Europe. If we assume that 10 cm2 of raw materials are needed to make a standard label, and 8.5 billion m2 of material is used in Europe every year, this corresponds to a truly astronomical release: almost 16.5 billion labels per week. That’s nearly 50 labels per capita (also weekly!). Labels are used to mark everyday products and services such as packaged meat and poultry, drinks, ready meals, personal care products which are sold in pharmacies, prescription drugs, price tags in supermarkets, labels on tourist luggage and more. The cost of one label – compared to the total cost of a product – may seem low, but the harm from its absence for the producers, logistics companies, consumers and, ultimately, for European economies and societies is significant.

At the same time, it should be understood that the main part of receipts for milk processing enterprises is provided by agricultural enterprises – slightly more than 80 % of all accepted for processing. In addition, in 2022, due to the increasing requirements for the quality and safety of milk supplied for industrial processing, the portion of milk from the population will continue to decline. Determination of Toxic Components in the Packaging Materials (SHIMADZU Analytical Instruments) A.B. Sukhomlynov, Ph.D. in Chemistry, ShymUkraine LLC, Kyiv In the sixth issue of “Packaging” 2021, an article devoted to the equipment of the Japanese instrument manufacturing corporation SHIMADZU, designed for physical and mechanical tests of packaging materials was published. The equipment of this type is widely used to establish the strength characteristics of source materials and finished packaging products. However, other types of SHIMADZU instruments have become most common in a laboratory practice, namely the devices for the determination of the material chemical composition. This article provides brief information about some types of SHIMADZU analytical equipment used to quantify organic and inorganic toxicants.
One of the most common tasks related to the determination of organic toxicants is the analysis of polymer packaging samples for the content of aldehydes and other volatile organic compounds. This analysis is performed using a gas chromatograph in the combination with a special sample preparation device – vapor liquid equilibrium block. This methodical feature provides the possibility of a reliable measurement of the concentration of volatile organic compounds. The choice of a gas chromatographic system detector is determined by the characteristics of the analysis object and the nature of certain components. In many cases, when the target organic compounds are known in advance, and the concentrations of these compounds (analytes) are quite high, the measurement can be performed using a conventional flame-ionization
Fig. 1. GC-2010 gas chromatograph with HS-20 equilibrium vapor phase unit
detector, which is a part of the standard set of the gas chromatography (Fig. 1). However, when analyzing the samples of materials contained analytes of an uncertain nature, it becomes necessary to use a mass spectrometric detector in the combination with a library of mass spectra. Fig. 2. IRTracer-100 infrared spectrometer
38
The task of the organic compounds determination is not always related to their toxicity. In some cases, it is necessary to identify raw materials for the packaging materials based on various polymers. Infrared spectrometers are used to do it (Fig. 2). Characteristic for this type of analytical measurements is the selection of the most effective standard samples, as well as the usage of libraries of IR spectra of organic compounds of the different classes. A very important task of an instrumental chemical analysis is to determine the elemental composition of the samples. Moreover, in most cases, such an analysis is associated not even with the quality control of the packaging material, but with the composition control of the packaged product content. This is extremely important especially during the composition control of food and drinking water.

The sensitivity of this device allows to perform the measurements at the concentration of 0.001 μg/l. It should be noted that all these instruments of elemental analysis measure the total concentration of atoms of a certain nature, but do not help to obtain information about the valence state of a particular atom. In most cases it is not necessary, but there are some atoms for which, from the point of view
Fig. 3. X-ray fluorescent spectrometer EDX-7000
As always in the instrumental analysis, the choice of measuring instruments is significantly influenced by the nature and the concentration of certain components of the sample. If the concentration of toxic analytes, for example, heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, etc.) and even more mild toxic analytes (arsenic, selenium, etc.) is relatively high, an X-ray fluorescent spectrometer (Fig. 3) is a convenient means of measuring 3), which makes it possible to analyze any types of samples without sample preparation. However, for the measuring extremely low concentrations of toxic analytes, the sensitivity of the X-ray fluorescent spectrometer is not enough. The problem solving requires a combination of special sample preparation and the usage of more sensitive measuring instruments. In a laboratory practice, until now,

the electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometers or the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometers have been widely used for this purpose. Recently more and more often the control of toxic components of an
of controlling the sample toxicity, a specific valence state is very important. The most characteristic example is hexavalent chromium. That is why the extremely permissible concentrations are prescribed in the normative documents. The task of the determination the hexavalent chromium is solved using the UV-Vis spectrophotometer (Fig. 5). The measurable signal is a light absorption in the wavelength range from 540 to 550 nm of the painted complex compound formed as a result of the previous reaction of 1.5-diphenylcarbazide with ions dichromate. The usage of previous chemical reactions makes it possible to use the UV-visible spectrophotometer not only to determine the atoms of some metals in the specific valence states, but also to determine their total content to relatively high concentrations.

Every spring in Ukraine there are competitions for the best packaging and label “Ukrainian packing star 2022”, “Ukrainian label 2022” and “Packaging of the future 2022”. This year I took part in their organization for the third time, although in general they were already 24. We started work, as always, after the New Year holidays. We have already received filling form for participation, samples, their descriptions-explanations. But on February 24, russia launched a full-scale war against Ukraine. First thought: why? Second: what to do? A few days later, I learned that my colleagues had left. Who is abroad, who is in safer places in Ukraine. And on March 17, according to our plans, the jury had to choose the winners. It was here that I received a message that the competitions will take place and we need to work on their organization.

Preparation of Competitions in Wartime The war stopped peaceful life. Only nine companies applied by February 24, and others were considering it. It’s hard to remember, but some companies that sent their entries to participate in the competition were destroyed or stopped a few weeks later. We understood how important it was at this time not to stop, but to do our job and thus add to our common victory over the enemy. We started communicating with companies: who to persuade, who – just to invite. The results were different. Some immediately agreed and sent the necessary materials,

some hesitated, some – refused for various reasons. But we confidently went to our goal: to organize and hold competitions no worse than in peacetime. The Club Packagers and the Kyiv International Contract Fair, as organizers of the competitions, decided to postpone the competition jury meeting to mid of April. Windm ller & H lscher, Heidelberg Printing Machines Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Packaging and Environmental Coalition supported the competitions. The packaging associations of Poland and Latvia joined us and helped. As a result, 21 companies and 7 universities and academies from 11 cities from all over

Ukraine took part in the competitions. They sent 54 samples of packing and 15 samples of label.
Jury Meeting The jury decided to hold the meeting on April 21, 2022 online. This was the second such attempt in our practice. For the first time in this mode, the jury worked in 2019 due to a flash of covid. This year we were helped to organize the work of the jury by the Polish Packaging Chamber, its leaders prof. Stanislav Tkachyk, Andrzej Kornatsky and personally the specialist of the Chamber Mazhenna Kobylazh. This time the organizers of the competitions decided to invite to the jury both those specialists who have repeatedly participated in it, and specialists from other countries. Thus, the winners of the competitions in 2022 were determined by an international jury. It included

Natalia Kulyk, Ph.D., Docent of NUHT, Volodymyr Slaby, UKRPEK Chairman, Olena Turzhanska, Windm ller & H lscher Representative in Ukraine, Iveta Krauja, Head of the Latvian Packaging Association, prof. Stanislaw Tkaczyk, President of the Polish Chamber of Packaging, and Veronika Halajdzhi, Ph.D., Director of IAC “Packaging”. It was headed by Valery Kryvoshei, Ph.D., editor-in-chief of the magazine Packaging, who was the chairman of the jury of all previous competitions. Online mode is not the best option for such events, but there was no other option. The organizers relied on the high professional level and practical experience of the jury members. In addition, they all understood the current trends in the development of packaging in the world, it was not difficult for them to determine the winners, paying attention
to the safety, convenience, economy and efficiency of packaging, its materials and design, recycling and disposal. And so it happened. Most samples received close to each other estimates.

The Fastiv plant was temporarily closed on February 24, 2022. In April, the company restored small-scale production in Fastiv to supply products to customers in Ukraine to support the supply of essential goods. This was in response to requests from local and central authorities. The decision was made by Elopak’s management in Ukraine and it has the full support of top management in Norway.
Before reopening plant operation, a comprehensive risk assessment was conducted. The priority was the personal safety of employees in Ukraine. The management ensured compliance with all safety requirements, labor legislation. The workers received a clear evacuation plan and appropriate emergency shelter. Following the reopening, Elopak continues to assess the risks of operations on an ongoing basis. The head of the Fastiv factory, Kostiantyn Havryliuk, explained: “We strongly support the decision to resume production. Many of us have been working at Elopak for a long time, and we want to continue our work. It was a difficult time to restore production, and we had to work hard to resume work.” Anya Yavorska, Elopak Ukraine Market Manager, added: “Elopak products are supported the food industry, and my team and I are aware of the importance of our mission in delivering these products to all Ukrainians, especially those in the most difficult areas where people are starving.” Elopak

Club Packagers Humanitarian Aid from the Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill In April 2022, the Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill decided to create a budget fund for charitable assistance in the amount of half a million hryvnias per month. The assistance will be provided through the Kartonnyk Charitable Foundation, which has been operating at the company since 1994. “The company, as a leader in the industry, has not stood aside since the beginning of war. We actively help all those who asked for help, and we initiate it in those areas where we have opportunities. In particular, we provided packaging, helped with the logistics of humanitarian goods, provided our products and medical supplies to hospitals in Kyiv and Obukhiv, and finally baked and distributed bread to people when there were logistical problems in the first days of the war,” Chairman of the Kyiv CPM Igor Oleschuk says. “But we have decided to organize help to a new level, and now we will provide it systematically, through our charity fund.” “The Kartonnyk Charitable Foundation has been operating at the plant for many years and has been deciding on compensation for staff treatment and financial assistance in difficult situations and force majeure,” Oleksandr Remenyuk, chairman of the foundation’s board, said. “Since 2008, the company has been operating corporate health insurance at the expense of the plant, so the medical compensation has ceased to be our task, and the fund has focused on providing targeted charitable assistance to third parties and organizations. And now we can pay full attention to where it is needed: medical facilities that help the wounded, volunteers, all those affected by the war.” Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill

3’2022 packaging sms Stora Enso Go out from Russian Factories Stora Enso has got rid of its three corrugated packaging plants in russia. Lukhovitsky, Arzamas and Balabanovsky packing plants of the company were handed over to the local government. The transaction will not have a material impact on Stora Enso’s annual sales and EBIT operating profit. Due to the deteriorating business prospects for these companies, the first quarter saw an impairment loss of € 35 million. The additional loss from the IFRS transaction will be approximately € 55 million, mainly consisting of currency adjustments displayed on the closing date. The plants employ about 620 people and have a total annual capacity of 395 million corrugated packaging. The russian market mainly produces corrugated packaging for food and pet food. On March 2, 2022, Stora Enso announced the cessation of production and sales in russia until further notice. On April 25, Stora Enso announced the transfer of two of its sawmills and forest enterprises in russia to local government. Stora Enso
The company has not yet completely stopped importing CocaCola to Ukraine from the Czech Republic and Poland to avoid shortages, but is already exporting its beverages to Moldova. “We are resuming supplies gradually, because we cannot meet the needs of the Ukrainian market at the same time,” Bublyk added. The settlement where the plant is located was under Russian occupation. The plant was shut down on the first day of the war and did not operate for almost two months. Coca-Cola HBC Beverages

Coca-Cola Plant in Kyiv Region Restores Operation Coca-Cola Beverages Ukraine, a Ukrainian beverage producer, is gradually restoring operations in the village of Velyka Dymerka near Brovary. It is planned to restore capacity by 100 % by the end of May. The plant’s production lines have not been damaged, but it is not possible to restore production immediately due to problems with the supply of raw materials and other components. In March, the plant destroyed a power plant and part of an office building as a result of shelling. Other premises and warehouses were damaged uncritically. The company does not name the exact losses, explaining their absence. “Even if the lines were not damaged, the power plant was destroyed, and the restoration of the pre-war format will require multimillion-dollar investments,” Andriy Bublyk said, the company’s director of corporate relations and sustainable development.

system, the structure for each monument had to be modeled from scratch, and the amount of materials was actually determined by eye,” the founder of the bureau Slava Balbek said. The bureau team has created a standard solution that
allows you to quickly design shelters for monuments of any size. Such structures, being a kind of packaging for monuments, will protect monuments from damage by blast waves, debris, bullets and fire, and will meet a number of other requirements. Volunteers together with the Alliance of Restorers of Historic Buildings of Ukraine and the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection of the Kyiv City State Administration addressed the architects with a proposal to develop such a system. The Balbek Bureau team has already received confirmation from the Kyiv authorities that such a system has been used on three Kyiv monuments.
