wenty-five percent of men suffer from varicose veins. Irving Reval and his wife Donna have been married fiftyfour years, and they stick together through thick and thin. One night, as Irving was pulling up the bedsheets, he says, “I felt something go wrong. I’ve had varicose veins in my right leg with several big bumps, protuberances above and beside my knee. When I put the light on, one of those bumps had gone red on top. ‘That’s it,’ I told my wife, ‘I’m calling Dr. Baltazar.’” “I’d seen him in UpClose Magazine, and my family physician recommended him, too. During my appointment, I asked Dr. Baltazar if he’d ever seen anything worse than my leg...and he said just a couple of times. In addition to the stuff above and around my knee, things were bad in my calf and my foot had gone absolutely black. Things were complicated enough that he broke it into two. The first treatment he did was from the groin to the knee with a laser. He made it very easy and put me at ease. The morning after the laser treatment I checked into Methodist Hospital and he did a three hour surgery on the lower half of my leg. When it was all over he came out and told my wife, Donna, ‘Rocky’s doing fine.’ She asked him, ‘Rocky?’ He’d found calcified blood clots all through that leg like he’d never seen before. He told Donna I was lucky and strong to have all this work done. She calls Dr. Baltazar

an angel!” “Not every doctor is a vascular surgeon with the skill to handle complicated cases...and a great personality too. Dr. Baltazar is one-of-a-kind! While he was doing the laser, we talked about our families. His oldest daughter’s going to be a senior in high school and he’s taking time off to drive her around and look at colleges. Our neighbor used to work at the hospital and she praised Dr. Baltazar up and down. During one visit, Dr. Baltazar was unwrapping my leg when he looked up at Donna and said, ‘You have the prettiest blue eyes.’ He really connects with his patients and their families.” “Sonia and Kelsey in his office are both wonderful. Any problems you have, they have answers. Once it took Donna and I over an hour to get my compression stocking on, but they told us about a silicone gel that makes it a snap. I still get teased about my ‘pretty stockings’ by the guys at the donut shop, but it’s great to be out golfing and walking Eldridge Park again.” “When I saw Dr. Baltazar at my last appointment, I asked him for “before and after” pictures. Not only did he give me those, he included one of the veins he removed...and joked that we should make it our next Christmas card. Thank goodness I got treatment. Seeing the pictures of the work he did just drives it home...the man’s a miracle worker!”

ighteen year old Skylar Devers was born with a hump in her nose. “When I was as little as eight, I told my mom I wanted a nose job,” says Skylar. “Except I thought that meant getting a new nose, new skin, new everything. And I didn’t want to lose my freckles, so I pushed that idea away. I hated my profile. I spent a lot of time not turning my head...the hump wasn’t that noticeable from the front. But when I knew someone was looking at me from the side, I became very self-conscious.” When Skylar turned eighteen, her mom asked if she wanted to explore her options for the hump in her nose. They scheduled consultations with two area plastic surgeons. The first was Dr. Eric Humble at Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery. “Both my mom and dad accompanied me to the consult,” says Skylar. “And it went very well. Dr. Humble said he could take down the hump and adjust my nose to be more proportionate. He spent a lot of time talking to both me and my parents about the reasons for wanting the procedure. This was right before Christmas break, and I still had one semester left in my senior year. Dr. Humble’s recommendation was I wait till summer, right before leaving for college. But my friends were all aware that I wanted this, and I didn’t see going back to school looking

different as an issue. Together with my parents, we decided to do the procedure over the break...and we cancelled the consultation with the other surgeon. We knew we wanted Dr. Humble to do the procedure.” “I went in late morning—after my last final—and was out by four o’clock,” continues Skylar. “It didn’t take long at all! And my recovery was quick. I had minimal bruising...I actually went to a Christmas party just a few days later. I found I didn’t need the pain medication given just in case.” And Skylar’s “new” nose? “It’s great! My friends and I are impressed with how natural it looks. It just looks like the nose that belongs on my face. It’s exactly what I wanted...smaller and straighter. I’m so much more confident now about my profile. I’m no longer afraid to turn my head and look around. I’m so happy!” Personal Transformation. That’s the mission at Sugar Land Face & Body. “As a plastic surgeon, my reward begins with my goal of bringing out my patients’ love of life,” says Dr. Humble. “The hump in Skylar’s nose was affecting her self-confidence. I’m excited about her transformation through rhinoplasty and wish her all the luck in the world as she moves on to her next chapter at the University of Alabama!”

Making History

COOL Again

by Olivia Cane

H

ow much Texas history do you know? This area is loaded with historic monuments to see and explore. Foremost among them is the San Jacinto Battleground where Texas won its independence from Mexico on April 21, 1836. But right next door to the San Jacinto Monument is an even cooler piece of Texas history: the one-and-only Battleship Texas! The USS Texas was built over a century ago in June 1910. It is the only surviving U.S. vessel to have served in both World War I and World War II...and is one of the longest serving Naval vessels in the U.S. However, since opening its doors to the public, the curators of the USS Texas have faced their own daunting battle—how to air condition a huge metal monstrosity during our brutal summer. The newest air conditioner keeping explorers and guests of the USS Texas cool is a Trane. Why Trane? Brian Jackson of

Jackson Air and Heat—the oldest Trane Comfort Specialist in Sugar Land—knows the answer. “Trane variable speed XV20i air conditioners don’t just fight heat, they fight humidity,” explains Brian. “When you live in a climate like ours where most summer days hover around the three digit mark and there’s almost 100% humidity, you need a system that works and that you can depend on. But what’s also remarkable about Trane variable speeds is their efficiency. With the cost of cooling your home or business on the rise, it pays to invest in a system that gives back. I love hearing from customers who say, ‘I can’t believe how low my energy bills are after putting in a Trane!’” Aside from carrying a top-notch product like Trane, Jackson Air and Heat has prospered because of their impeccable service record over the past 30+ years. Eighty percent of their new customers are referrals from friends and family of existing customers. They are EPA and NATE certified and

are the proud recipients of both the Angie’s List “Super Service” award and the BBB Award of Excellence multiple times. “When you provide the best product with the best service, it’s easy to love doing what you do,” says Brian. “And when it comes to doing battle with Texas summers, you don’t have to go it alone. With 0% financing or money back in rebates available, there’s no need to be hot or inefficient. Call us and we’ll show you just how amazing great air conditioning can be.”

Pete and Rachelle Dillett’s Story

hen Pete and Rachelle Dillett moved from Fort Bend County to California, they turned to KW Southwest (Keller Williams) agent Valerie Diaz to manage and rent out their Sienna Plantation home. “We vetted Valerie along with other agents,” says Pete. “We really liked Valerie, both her personality and her approach and service.” The Dillett’s were extremely satisfied with the service provided by KWSW and Valerie. But just a short year later, Pete learned his family would be returning to the area. KWSW agent Valerie says, “Pete called me. He and Rachelle wanted another home in Sienna Plantation, and they would be in town in a few days to look. They knew what they wanted and where. I put together a list of priority properties to look at.” Pete says, “We looked at eight homes in the one day we had to look. Valerie had everything organized, she was able to get things done in a timely fashion, and she did a great job of only showing what we wanted to see. We found the perfect home, and made an offer that same night.” “What really stands out about Valerie,” continues Pete, “is that she’s always in your corner. We were on tight timelines, yet she never made decisions for us or did things we might not agree with. She’s a fantastic communicator. She just has a way with people, a great demeanor. We negotiated down the asking price and had to deal with some post inspection items. Valerie took

care of it in a way that doesn’t turn anyone off. She was persistent and followed up on everything until we reached a fair agreement.” Settled into their new home, a year later the Dillett’s decided to sell the rental property. “Valerie did all of the marketing and staging. It can be difficult to stage with renters in a home, but Valerie worked with them and got everything set up...making the house look fantastic. It sold in four hours.” “Always in your corner.” That’s a great way to describe Valerie and the entire team at KWSW. Valerie says, “The home the Dillett’s bought was overpriced and I knew it. We ultimately negotiated it down 13% off the original asking price. When it came time to sell the rental property, we listed the home at top dollar. I was nine months pregnant at the time, and made sure I provided all the comparable properties for the appraiser to use to appraise the property as high as possible. The appraisal came back the day I delivered...but prior to delivery, I made some phone calls and was able to have the buyer cover half of the value discrepancy.” With agents like Valerie, it’s easy to see why Keller Williams is the #1 real estate franchise in the world. hen the plumber that lived down the street from Sarah Warburton moved, she turned to a big national company the next time she needed plumbing help. “I was so used to my neighbor just stopping by and fixing what needed to be fixed on his way home that I had no idea what I was in for,” says Sarah. “I felt like I was in a high pressure sales pitch and left with an inflated bill. Different guys were in and out of my house, and I had no idea what they were doing or if they were fixing anything!” Sarah had heard from several people that Alan’s Plumbing was different... more like a neighborhood plumber. Alan’s Plumbing is owned by master plumber Alan Burkhalter. His wife Jennifer handles the phones, and his team is rounded out with Alan’s sons Luke and Beau, Alan’s brother Chris and Jeff Johnson who are all journeyman licensed plumbers. Alan’s son Jake and apprentices Jaime, Trevor, Kyle and Robert are all working towards their journeyman license.

Sarah’s first call to Alan’s was to replace all of the faucets in her home. Sarah says, “Jennifer got me on the schedule and told me to go ahead and pick up the faucets I liked before the appointment.” For longevity and durability, Alan’s recommends purchasing all brass faucets with no plastic inside. They can be found at plumbing stores that specialize in plumbing fixtures. “But when I got to the store,” continues Sarah, “I had no idea what I needed! I called Jennifer back, texted her some pictures, and she was able to walk me through the process. She saved me from buying something that wouldn’t fit in my sink when the plumber arrived!” The plumber that visited Sarah was Alan and Jennifer’s son Beau. “He was so kind,” says Sarah. “Called me ma’am. He arrived at the quoted time and when he left everything was clean. I didn’t feel like I was being upsold and the price was fair. I also loved that it was the owner’s son...it didn’t feel like ‘just anyone’ was coming into my house. He had a vested interest in being

polite and doing a good job...after all, I did have his mom and boss’s phone number!” “I called Jennifer on another occasion when my dishwasher wasn’t working,” continues Sarah. “I really had no idea if I had a plumbing issue or not when I called. Jennifer walked me through checking the dishwasher draining process, and was able to determine-over the phone--that it was not a plumbing issue and I wouldn’t need Alan’s Plumbing that day. And she also recommended a fabulous appliance repairman. I love that kind of honesty and integrity!” When you need a plumber, there’s no need to be bombarded with salesmen, upselling and inflated bills. Call Alan’s Plumbing and like Sarah, you too will find out why they are Fort Bend’s most reliable neighborhood plumbers.

But did you know those differences extend into the Finance Department? “I’ve been in this business for more than 15 years with different dealerships,” says Finance Manager Alex Hinojosa. “And I can tell you, here at Classic Chevy, we take care of our customers. It’s the way owner Don Kerstetter wants his business to be run. We’re competitive with any financing option out there, and we offer all incentives available. We give our customers every single thing they qualify for—no ifs, ands or buts. I recently had a customer qualify for a great rate, and with their great credit, they qualified for rebates too. They were given both. Trust me, that doesn’t happen everywhere. But here at Classic Chevy, you never have to wonder. You get everything you qualify for.” When you step into Classic Chevy, you immediately notice the laid back atmosphere. You’re greeted by a smiling face wearing shorts and a golf shirt. It’s a difference in atmosphere significant to Alex. “Wearing shorts everyday is quite a change from a suit and tie...but what I really enjoy is the true ‘difference.’ To be honest, I was out of this business. I was tired of the long thankless hours I had experienced elsewhere. I knew Classic Chevy General Manager Mark Kolon...we worked together

ASK MARGIE

The Lawyer Who Cares

THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:

What Will Be Your Legacy? by Amy Sharp

Y

ou probably don’t think about your legacy daily...but August is the perfect month to start. It’s “What Will Be Your Legacy?” month—a time to examine the effectiveness of your life and plan your legacy. Legacy is anything handed down from a predecessor. This month is an excellent time to think about your intangible gifts: what you have learned, your values, and giving of yourself to the world around you. It’s also imperative to plan for your physical legacies—your assets. Dalyn Hoegemeyer, a financial advisor with a large American-based financial services firm, says, “I tell my clients that when you leave this earth, there are three places your assets can go: to your family, to your favorite charity, or to the government. Having the proper documentation in place to ensure your wishes are carried out is critical.” To carry out her own personal estate planning documentation, Dalyn chose Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly. “Margie is the perfect fit...someone we can grow with as our needs change. For my family, she’s created wills, financial and medical powers of attorney, medical directives, and a revocable transfer on death deed.”

“Margie was able to look at my goals and my age, and create a strategy to protect my assets based on my scenario,” continues Dalyn. “That’s why she’s also one of the attorneys I refer clients to. From wills and powers of attorney to revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid preparation, long term care preparation, and the various other scenarios that exist, Margie and I work together as a team to put in place what is right for you. And when you work with Margie, Dalyn Hoegemeyer, financial advisor your net worth does not matter. She does not charge a percentage of your estate to come up with a plan. It’s a flat-fee for everyone. She’s truly passionate about making sure your assets are protected from going where you may not want them to go.” Your legacy is your chance to contribute positively to the future. Take this month to challenge yourself to imprint your legacy upon others...it can be as easy as merely living life to its fullest. And don’t delay in protecting your hard-earned physical legacy with proper estate planning documentation...because no one is guaranteed tomorrow.

Pests might be living in your home and you’re NOT seeing them! “We see evidence of both insects and rodents in a large majority of the homes we visit,” says John. “You don’t have to see a mouse or a rat to know they’re there. They leave their evidence in droppings, attic trails and urine trails. And in our climate, we are under attack all the time. In the summer, the rodents come in looking to cool off and find some water. In the cooler months they come in looking for warmth. Roaches come in to escape the rain...and we got a ton of it early in the summer. The fact of the matter is, you

have a controlled environment inside. It’s dry, it’s an even temperature, and there’s food! Perfect for your family...and perfect for pests.” Lucky for you, the crew at BUGCO ain’t afraid of no pests! “When it comes to insects, preventive control is key,” continues John. “Here at BUGCO, we provide what’s called our ‘Perimeter of Protection.’ It’s a specialty technique performed around the exterior of your home that reduces the need for additional applications inside. Using this technique, you get an invisible ‘barrier’ that helps to seal out pests from entering your home. For rodents, exclusion is your first line of defense. We can come in and seal off all exterior access points...cover weep holes with wire mesh and seal points where wires are entering your home. Windows

and door seals need to be checked and low hanging tree branches are convenient pathways onto your house. If vermin evidence is present, we set out bait stations to not only eliminate the rodents inside your home, but also to help in reducing the outside population.” Or maybe the “something weird”...is happening in your yard. “Mosquitoes and fire ants. Our rains brought them out in droves. We can eliminate fire ants anywhere on your property for up to one full year. And those mosquitoes don’t stand a fighting chance with one of our mosquito misting systems. We’re offering a 20 nozzle system, installed in your outdoor living space, for $1599. We can also service, repair or upgrade any existing system. If your house has a mosquito misting system, but you have no idea what to do with it, we can help. And as an added bonus...house general pest control (that’s complete ‘bugbusting’ for your home!) is included with all mosquito misting quarterly maintenance programs.” Without general pest control, the likelihood is high that unwelcome guests are living in your home. Since you’re not alone...pick up the phone… And Call BUGCO!

Next Stop...St. Michael’s!

St. Michael’s is in-network with AETNA and also accepts more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. Your insurance MUST pay in-network benefits at the ER of YOUR CHOICE whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “out-of-network.” At this time, St. Michael’s, due to governmental bureaucratic decisions is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

Five Kids = ER Frequent Fliers

J

ennifer Kirkpatrick, owner of 26 Daisies Events and Catering, has five children. She’s been to the ER more than ten times in recent years. Her ER of choice? St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms. “It’s close, it’s convenient, the people are nice, and most importantly, they get you in and out,” says Jennifer. “This is especially significant when you have several other kids in the waiting room, as I often do. It’s really difficult to focus on the injured or sick child. And who wants to wait hours in triage or to see a doctor anyway. My family has been to St. Michael’s for many reasons: a broken arm, ingrown toenail, infections, a citric acid burn, catfish stingers in the knuckles and a gashed shin...just to name a few. Each and every time, the doctors at St. Michael’s got us in, made a diagnosis, took care of us and sent us home. And the billing is really simple too. There’s no waiting for a patient coordinator, and you don’t spend the next few months getting tons of bills from different people and departments. There’s no big guessing game on how much the visit will cost.” Jennifer had her own ER encounter recently. “I was preparing for a big catering event. My clients are very artsy people and I wanted to impress them. I was painting a large piece of sheet metal to display food platters, and I underestimated the weight of the metal. It fell, slicing my toenail. There was lots of bleeding, and my 19 year old son drove me to the ER. He was freaking out the entire time, but we made it. After we got my issue under control, he asked if maybe the doctor could look at

his toenail...which was ingrown again. Back when he broke his arm, he told the ER doctor his toe hurt too, and they took care of it. We didn’t take care of his toenail that day, but that’s how comfortable we are in the emergency room!” Dr. Shannon Orsak, founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, says, “Of course, we don’t want your family to be ER frequent fliers. But as Jennifer has discovered...we are here when you need us, for every emergency.” St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms 16062 SW Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77479 281-980-HELP(4357) 26226 I 45N, Spring, TX 77386 281-419-2911 www.24hrer.com

Low Maintenance, Easy Upkeep...

AND Beautiful! W

hen Jim and Patti Sterle were ready to remodel their kitchen, they looked into granite. “It was quite expensive,” says Patti, “both the cost of installation and the upkeep.” Patti had read about Miracle Method in a past issue of UpClose magazine and decided to have them over to talk. “They came out and showed us samples and we liked what we saw. It looks great, it’s very affordable, and it’s low maintenance...just what we were looking for!” Patti and Jim had their kitchen countertops and backsplash refinished with Miracle Method... and they were impressed. “The new look is very sleek and modern, plus the service provided by Miracle Method is fantastic,” says Patti. “The crew was always on time and they finished exactly when they said they would. The men that worked at our house were both courteous and professional. They do excellent work and you can tell they care...they work until it’s both perfect and exactly what you want.” They were so impressed, Jim and Patti hired Miracle Method two more times as they worked through their house remodel...to refinish the master bath and then the guest bath. “In the master, we had them refinish the tub, tub tiles, sink and countertop. That bathroom also had an ugly black ceramic tile floor and Miracle Method refinished it to a pretty white. It looks like a brand new floor! It’s gorgeous and everyone that sees it says it totally looks like a new bathroom.” In the guest bath, the Sterle’s refinished the tub, tile, countertop and sink. “This was a white tub that we kept white...but it had a large scratch. They fixed the scratch, refinished, and it looks brand new!” Owned and operated by Fort Bend County residents Paul and Jonee Barnett, Miracle Method Surface Refinishing is proud to be accredited members of the BBB. Thanks to satisfied customers like Jim and Patti, they enjoy an A rating on Angie’s List and have won the Angie’s List Super Service award multiple years. “I recommend our local Miracle Method to everybody,” says Patti. “Especially if you’re considering granite and you’re just not sure. Have Miracle Method over just to talk...give them a chance. They have a large assortment of samples and colors to choose from, and the finished product is well worth the very affordable price. Plus, it’s beautiful. But what I love

the most is the low maintenance and upkeep. My new surfaces never look grimy or full of build-up...it’s almost like I never have a dirtylooking kitchen or bathroom!”

EDUCATION

It Pays To Stay One Step Ahead

I

t’s a universally acknowledged truth that we like the things we’re good at, and are frustrated by the things we’re less good at. So imagine being a child who’s struggling at school—a place he or she is obligated to go for six or more hours a day, five days a week. Imagine staring at a board and having no idea how to assimilate the information being presented. Everyone else seems to get it—except you. That’s the reality for countless numbers of children who, until now, had few alternatives to traditional, hit-or-miss, rote-memorization tutoring. And that’s precisely why KnILE Center’s tutoring program, EduCoachNow (ECN), is the three-time winner of the “Best Tutoring in Fort Bend” award. By combining cognitive training skills exercises with enhanced organizational, study, and test taking strategies, the specially trained ECN coaches have managed to open up vistas of learning and structured grade improvements for hundreds of Fort Bend County students. “Now is the time to get a jump start on the school year,” says Betsy de Vega, the founder of KnILE Prep Academy and ECN’s boutique educational concept. “Begin with some EduCoachNow sessions this summer, and then continue them as your child eases into the school year. What we do here is different and it works. At both KnILE Prep Academy and ECN, our teachers are facilitators of learning, not just deliverers of information. Every child works at their own pace. We have some outstanding public schools in the area, but some kids need extra help or just learn differently. We’re here to help those that don’t necessarily fit the traditional mold.” If you feel as though your child needs something different this school year, take heart. Call today and get a jump start with EduCoachNow tutoring sessions. Or there are still a few slots open for the 2016-2017 school year at KnILE Prep Academy (grades 3-12).

Be Cool Imagine a place where you consistently leave feeling better than you did when you came in. An enjoyable—yet quick—experience that produces an endorphin rush, tighter skin, reduced inflammation, pain management, the best night’s sleep ever, and potentially some weight loss too. Look no further. This cool nirvana—Restore Cryotherapy—has arrived in Sugar Land. While the technology may be new, the idea is as old as ice. Restore Cryotherapy owner Jim Donnelly says, “It’s easy to think of it as an alternative to cold water immersion or ice packs. The chamber is cooled with liquid nitrogen to a temperature of around -220° to -240° F. You spend up to three minutes in the cold. Your body reacts by undergoing vasoconstriction and centralizing blood around key internal organs. The blood becomes super-oxygenated and nutritionally rich, and resupplies the entire body once you exit the cold. This reduces inflammation, provides a boost of energy and increases the body’s healing properties. The therapy also boosts collagen production and triggers the release of endorphins, which induce analgesia (immediate pain relief ). It’s all natural and only takes minutes. You come out feeling invigorated.” Once only accessible to professional athletes and the wealthy, Restore Cryotherapy makes cryotherapy affordable for everyone. “We are in the business of helping people,” continues Jim. “We’ve helped children with skin issues, individuals recovering from chemotherapy, those recovering from car accidents or surgery, weekend warriors, those suffering from inflammation and arthritis, tired moms and individuals with careers that demand they stay on their feet all day. I’ve seen individuals break away from opiates and narcotics. Others don’t need the ibuprofen anymore. Plus, you sleep better and you feel great.” With its many wellness benefits, cryotherapy has helped countless everyday individuals change the trajectory of their lives. But Jim’s favorite success hits close to home. “My entire life, my dad was an avid golfer and loved to travel. After receiving three artificial joints, he got to where he didn’t do much anymore—just stayed on the couch. Being active was just too painful. That’s a miserable existence...I was literally watching my fun and active dad turn into an angry old man. With cryotherapy, he’s back to golfing three or four times a week and traveling a couple times a year. It’s not that we’re curing his pain. It’s just now he has an acceptable and all natural way to deal with it. His quality of life is exponentially different than it could have been. To see Dad rise from the ashes like a phoenix has been awesome!” In addition to full body cryotherapy, Restore Cryotherapy offers drip therapy, hyperbaric therapy, compression therapy and localized cryotherapy including to the face. “All of these additional services really complement the cryotherapy. When you come in, it’s a fun experience. And we promise—you’ll leave with a smile and feeling better than you did when you came in!”

A Fabulous Fashion Opportunity for Teens and Young Adults

T

he Junior Fashionista Board at Pennywise—the resale centers benefiting the Fort Bend Women’s Center—is once again calling all fashionistas for the upcoming school year. “This is a fantastic opportunity for students to earn service hours, learn fashion and retail skills, and be ambassadors on their school campuses for domestic violence, teen dating violence and sexual assault prevention,” says Liz Moreno, Pennywise Volunteer Manager. So what does a Junior Fashionista do? “We take by Amy Sharp enthusiastic young people that are interested in learning about fashion. The students elect their own board of directors and share leadership roles. Every fashionista volunteers a minimum of three hours a month in a Pennywise store. Responsibilities include dressing mannequins, making the store look trendy and fashionable, and helping with displays and pricing. Students gain fantastic organizational management skills. Additionally, every fashionista participates in our fall and spring fashion shows, held in both Richmond and Stafford. Here, participants select outfits ahead of time from the store. Together with our lead fashionista coordinator, we tweak the outfit and add bling...creating a fabulous look head-to-toe. Then, they walk the catwalk! Fashion shows also include our version of ‘copy-cat’ fashion. Fashionistas select a look from a fashion magazine and recreate it using items from the store. The audience votes on the best match. It’s always a lot of fun and we have seen some fabulous outfits put together in past shows!” The Junior Fashionista program sets Pennywise apart from other resale shops and thrift stores. It’s destination shopping and this volunteer experience is a fun way to make a difference in our community. The first fashion show is coming up in October. The theme is Homecoming and fashionistas will be modeling homecoming gowns, shabby chic, plus casual and other fall fashions. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity! G. Failure to Pay = Jail Time by Amy Sharp

hile the law provides for debtor protection, in the State of Texas there are two instances where you can be incarcerated for failure to pay: failure to pay spousal support and failure to pay child support. Board Certified attorney Ronique Bastine Robinson, founder of Bastine Law Group, says, “Failure to pay child support is the most prevalent. Child support is not considered a debt. It’s an obligation. Laws are written to protect those that can’t protect themselves. In this instance, the legislature has made sure children are protected. But as a result, a lot of people get incarcerated...even when the reasons for being unable to pay are valid.” In a published opinion, Ronique won a case in appellate court concerning this very issue. “My client was ordered to jail weekends for failure to pay child support. The appellate court agreed the individual did not need to be incarcerated, and threw out the trial court’s ruling. Here at Bastine, we aim to create an environment where everyone is protected. In custody cases, that

includes the child, the custodial parent, and the non-custodial parent. You have a right to not be unfairly incarcerated.” Today, Ronique’s Bastine Law Group colleague, Valerie Waddell, is using that published opinion as precedence in her own case. “In Valerie’s case, the father lost his job. For several months he was trying to make small payments, but he was still incarcerated for not paying the full amount. He’s out on bond and we are awaiting the appellate court opinion, but we strongly believe that given the precedence of my case, we can keep this father out of jail. Stay tuned for the results!” Advocating for the rights of those they represent. That’s the charge of the attorneys at Bastine Law Group. In her quest for advocation and education, Ronique makes frequest media stops educating the public. Most recently she appeared on ABC13’s Crossroads with Melanie Lawson talking about parental alienation. If you need legal assistance, call 281.240.7979 to speak to a Bastine Law Group attorney.

Don’t Try This at Home! Jessica Nelson, MD has been an emergency physician for more than five years. “I noticed we see a lot of families come in to the ER with a sense of hopelessness and urgency about head lice. They are literally pulling their hair out because they have not been able to eradicate the problem with over-the-counter treatments.” So what’s happened? When your child gets sent home from school with lice, why is it not effective to stop by the local drugstore and pick up an OTC treatment? “There are really three reasons,” continues Dr. Nelson. “The first, we now have what’s known as ‘super lice.’ This isn’t a new bug, but the lice are adapting and becoming more resistant to the OTC treatments. It’s very similar to the way the bacteria in our body can become resistant to an antibiotic. And these ‘super lice’ are replicating—making babies that are resistant to the treatment. Second, even if the bugs are not resistant, the OTC options only kill the live lice and about 70% of the eggs. That means 30% of the eggs are still stuck on the hair shaft and viable. Seven days later they hatch, breed, lay eggs, and the school calls you again because your child has lice. And finally, the comb that comes with those kits does a very poor job of pulling out the eggs and bugs. You really have a lot working against you!” Lucky for us, Dr. Nelson has the key to successful lice hunting and is excited to share it

room during the process. And everything else you’ve heard about lice? Washing the sheets, fumigating the stuffed animals, etc.? Forget about it! “Overthink the head, underthink everything else,” says Dr. Nelson. “The bugs can’t survive more than 24 hours off the head...so if you’re really worried about those stuffed animals, just put them in a plastic bag for a day.” Catch Dr. Nelson and her family’s lively at her clinic, Lice Hunter, MD. Here, Dr. Nelson run on Family Feud, re-airing on KTXH uses a methodical approach called The Shepherd channel 20 this month! hen Kathie Corner was ready to do some major remodeling projects in her home, she did her homework. “I saw some ads for Teri Gilberg (better known as ‘The Re-Modelista,’) so I looked up pictures of her finished projects online. I really liked what I saw! I had Teri over to talk. She’s high-energy, and instantly ‘got-it’ when I described what I wanted. I followed up by checking her references and they were all fabulous. While I did get another estimate for the work, Teri was the obvious choice. She is extremely professional and knows both her stuff and the business.” The work at Kathie’s home included a complete remodel of both the master bath and half bath, carpet upstairs, by Marie Page and replacing the carpet on the stairs with wood. “When I first met with Teri, I explained to her the importance of providing me with a realistic budget and sticking to it.
