LIFE-SAVING OPTION,
close to home
A life-saving option, close to home Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is helping gynecologic cancer patients become survivors Richmond resident Jessica Pantoja was just 18 years old when she received shocking news: she had stage 4 ovarian cancer.
For gynecologic cancer patients, the continuum of care available at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital provides a beacon of hope, allowing them to receive the best possible care – close to home.
For months, Pantoja had been experiencing abdominal distension and weight gain, among other symptoms. When Charles Conlon, M.D., oncologist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, examined her for the first time, he immediately ordered a CT scan that showed a large tumor.
Supported by the latest technology and highly skilled staff, Houston Methodist Sugar Land medical oncologists, surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists, develop and implement customized treatment plans that are saving lives. “At Houston Methodist Sugar Land, we treat even the most complex, advanced gynecologic cancers,” Zaid said. “Our collaborative approach is a tremendous benefit to patients, because our oncology team works closely to ensure that we are providing the most effective combination of treatments in a coordinated manner. And for many patients, having the hospital close to home reduces the stress and worry of ongoing treatment and follow-up.”
Conlon sent Pantoja directly to the emergency room and called Tarrik Zaid, M.D., a surgeon with Houston Methodist Gynecologic Oncology Associates. Zaid met Pantoja and her parents at the hospital to facilitate her admission. The next morning, in a complex surgical procedure, he removed a tumor from her abdomen weighing nearly 20 pounds. “Jessica was very, very sick,” Zaid recalled. “In these types of cases, time is of the essence.” When she regained some strength following her hospital stay, Pantoja underwent four cycles of chemotherapy with Conlon. Today, she is 20 years old, cancer-free and planning to attend veterinary school.
With state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging technology, robotic surgical systems and the TrueBeam radiation therapy system, Houston Methodist Sugar Land oncology specialists are changing the way newly diagnosed patients view their treatment options. Pam Jacobsen was diagnosed with stage 3 endometrial cancer in 2013. At the time, she was living in Richmond and didn’t want to travel back and forth to the Medical Center for treatments. “I have several friends who are doctors, and they all told me that they had complete confidence in Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and the physicians there,” she said. “I knew then that
“The whole thing was very overwhelming, and shocking,” she said. “When you are 18, you don’t expect to have ovarian cancer. But the staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land made the experience so much easier for me. Dr. Conlon, Dr. Zaid, Sarah Snow and all the other nurses – became like a family to me.”
September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month You’ve heard it time and time again: Listen to your body. That’s because it’s true. Symptoms, such as abnormal bleeding or pain, are trying to tell you something. They could signal something harmless and easy to treat, but they can also be signs of cancer. Our chart highlights a few women’s cancers and the symptoms to watch for.

cause of her severe symptoms.
After surgery with Zaid, Jacobsen underwent radiation treatment with Clive Shkedy, M.D., radiation oncologist with Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land, followed by six cycles of chemotherapy with Zaid. “My treatment wasn’t easy, but I was very comfortable with the staff, and it was as good an experience as you can have with cancer,” she said. “It was a seamless process, and they even set up my radiation treatments around my work schedule.” Today, Jacobsen is cancer-free and living in Tyler, Texas, and she still travels to Sugar Land every six months for follow-up. “The hospital staff is amazing,” she said. “I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

Zaid diagnosed her with stage 4 endometrial cancer. Post-surgery, she received radiation treatment with Shkedy and chemotherapy with medical oncologist Jorge Darcourt, M.D. “Everyone worked together so well,” she said. “Dr. Zaid shared my case with Dr. Shkedy and Dr. Darcourt before each of my initial visits, so I didn’t have to tell my story over and over again. It felt great to know I had a team of specialists on my side who were talking to each other about my case.”
Simeone is cancer-free and thankful for the doctors, nurses and staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land who cared for her. “I got to know so many people at the hospital, and all of them were awesome,” she said. “Even now when I go back for follow-ups, people remember me. I am extremely thankful for them, because they saved my life!”

Mary and Carl Favre
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” ~ Winston Churchill
A
t age 10, the late Sugar Land businessman and philanthropist Carl Favre was sent to live with his Aunt Amelia. “His father had divorced and wasn’t sure he could take care of Carl,” says Carl’s wife Mary. “His Aunt Amelia had spent time in her own childhood in an orphanage after her mother died, and she did not want the same for Carl...so she offered to take Carl in.” For both Carl and his Aunt Amelia, their period of homelessness—this time away from home—was temporary. Both moved back home a couple years later when their respective fathers remarried. Amelia and Carl remained close until her death, right before Carl’s death in 2015. Amelia never had kids of her own, and she always stressed to Carl and everyone around her the importance of giving back. Perhaps it was these childhood experiences that made Parks Youth Ranch near and dear to Carl’s heart. Parks Youth Ranch is an emergency shelter right here in Fort Bend County that provides counseling and life changing services to at risk and homeless youth. “What we must realize and what Carl could empathize with,” says Mary, “is that many of these kids are going through trials and tribulations not of their own accord. Most are not drug-using, rebellious, bad teenagers. Like Carl and his Aunt Amelia, many just find themselves in this unfortunate current circumstance through no fault of their own. I was recently at the shelter and we were screening T-shirts. A beautiful blonde-hair blue-eyed twelve year old girl was screening a picture of a heart. She told me the heart was her five year
old sister. Her sister that had died from cancer, and after her sister’s death, her parents couldn’t deal with her...so they sent her to PYR. We just can’t judge.” Carl served on the Parks Youth Ranch board until his death. Today, Mary takes his place on the board. All of the kids at Parks Youth Ranch attend FBISD schools...it was a happenstance meeting between Mary and FBISD superintendent Dr. Charles Dupre. “I saw Charles out and about and asked him what he knew about credit recovery,” says Mary. Credit recovery allows students to earn credit in subjects they previously failed or missed. Turns out, Dr. Charles Dupre knew a lot. “Charles was adopted at birth by a military family. But after his mother died, he went into foster care at age seven. Charles attended school as an orphan. Like Carl and so many others involved in Parks Youth Ranch, he understands and empathizes with the plights of these kids. And he made things happen. In a mere two months he visited the ranch and helped to significantly improve education services provided for our kids in FBISD schools. We were very blessed, as Dupre’s timing was right. He was put in this position at the exact right time that he could help us tremendously.” One of Carl’s favorite Bible scriptures was Matthew 24:40. “...I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” That’s what Parks Youth Ranch is all about. The people at Parks Youth Ranch are making a difference in the lives of thousands of kids that are homeless in our area...many through no fault of their own. They’re giving back. Looking Out for Each Other R
by Sara Adams
osalinda’s legs first started to bother her about a year ago. The pain started climbing up her legs and it just kept getting worse. Before long, the swelling became so bad that she had to elevate her feet during her regular work day. Then one night her husband, Willie Nunez, handed her a magazine article and said, “You need to read this.” Rosalinda and Willie have been married for forty-six years. They have a lot of practice looking out for each other. Concerned over her discomfort, Willie thought the woman in the story and Rosalinda were experiencing the same sort of pain. He liked what he read about Dr. Baltazar and thought Rosalinda would like him too. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery. He is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic...a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers as well as leg swelling. Dr. Baltazar has been diagnosing and treating diseases of the veins for over ten years. After her first appointment, Rosalinda said, “I liked Dr. Baltazar immediately and I loved his staff, Sonja and Maya. They are a great team. They really complement each other.” Willie met Dr. Baltazar the day of surgery and he said, “I liked him, too. He was very professional. He explained everything. Just before I was about to go to
the waiting room, he offered to say a little prayer with me and Rosie. That really surprised me that he would take the extra time for us. I walked out with a little extra peace.” Rosie said that her surgery didn’t hurt. “It was easy to relax. Dr. Baltazar explained everything to me during the entire procedure and his staff was very supportive. I felt better right away.” After her speedy recovery, she looked at Willie and said, “Now it’s your turn. Dr. Baltazar took care of me and now he will take care of you.” Willie knew Rosie was right...she was looking out for him just like he looked out for her. It was time to treat his bulging veins. He agreed to make an appointment with Dr. Baltazar and said, “I wouldn’t consider going anywhere else.”

Cellulite Gone!
Samantha Boy, founder of www.BLENDED.com
by Amy Sharp
A
while back, 43 year old Samantha Boy of Houston saw a segment on Dr. Oz about Cellfina. Cellfina is the incredible new FDA-approved technology that has been proven to treat not just surface imperfections, but the primary cause of cellulite. “I’m thin and fairly fit,” says Samantha. “But I was genetically given a really bad case of cellulite. I started to shop around for Cellfina. I found very few doctors in the Houston area that performed the procedure. One was Dr. Eric Humble of Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery.” Samantha attended an open house at Dr. Humble’s office about Cellfina, and followed up with a consultation. “Simply put, I was blown away by Dr. Humble. I’ve seen another plastic surgeon in Houston for different things over the years. Quite honestly—even after several visits—I’m not even sure he knows my name. This was not the case with Dr. Humble. His bedside manner is amazing. He is very personable, professional and articulate...and you can tell he is extremely knowledgable. I was quite surprised because he looks so young. I was extremely comfortable talking with him...which was not my experience in the past with plastic surgeons. One of my biggest concerns with Cellfina was that the procedure involves injections of epinephrine. Dr. Humble understood my concerns, reassuring me I would not be allergic to it and that I would be fine.”
Samantha’s Cellfina procedure took about two hours. “Most of that time was prep,” says Samantha. “Dr. Humble marked all of the dimples first. He was very thorough to make sure the procedure was done right. There was slight discomfort during the procedure, but the two nurses and Dr. Humble were soothing, nice and sincere. They made me very comfortable. Afterward, it took a while for the swelling to go down, but the cellulite was gone. I couldn’t believe it!” Cellulite gone! But how? “Cellulite happens as a result of fibrous bands called septae, which are beneath the skin’s surface, pulling on the skin,” explains Dr. Humble. “Cellfina works by treating these bands specifically and causing them to release. It’s a very simple procedure. I use a small suctionstabilizer to pull the skin taut, deliver a local numbing agent, and then use a specialized hand-piece to target those fibrous, dimple-causing bands. Once the bands are released, they smooth themselves out, and no more dimpling!” “My confidence in a swimsuit has soared,” says Samantha. “I’m no longer ashamed to be in a bikini. Not only am I blown away by my results, I’m still blown away by Dr. Humble. I had no idea there was such a great plastic surgeon in Sugar Land. He is well-trained and truly on top of the latest and greatest technology available. He is worth the drive from Houston. I’m sure I will be back!”

avid Fuqua spent years looking for a weekend getaway on Lake Conroe. When he couldn’t find what he was looking for, he decided to find the perfect location— even if it was an older house—and bring that home
to life. To assist in this endeavor, David enlisted the help of his fiancee, contractor and designer Christina Lyn Murello, and KW Southwest (KWSW) agent Cynthia Liska. “Cynthia is the Realtor of choice for David’s dad, area builder Steve Fuqua,” says Christina. “And I can see why. I liked her the minute I met her. She is very personable and honest. And she’s one smart cookie... really knows her stuff. We found the perfect location and the perfect house to transform.” With Cynthia’s help, David purchased a peninsula lot location with an outstanding lake view in Waldon on Lake Conroe. The home was built in 1987. Christina—an Art Institute of Houston graduate with more than twenty years experience in interior and exterior design—sketched out ideas to make the house their own. “I’m a general contractor and interior designer all in one,” says Christina. “I use my vast experience, contacts, trips to market and choice of vendors to put every touch on the vision for a home— from construction to the furniture and final details. That’s what I did in David’s Lake Conroe home.” The lakefront lodge transformation included adding a room over the garage and turning the small bath upstairs into a full

bathroom. The door and drawers in the kitchen were refaced to look new. The master bath was gutted, replacing the vanity and shower. The tile staircase, dangerous in a water area, was replaced with wood. The house received new floors and paint throughout. Though the home was lakefront, it only had small windows looking out at the water. Ten foot, floor-to-ceiling windows were added to really capture the beautiful lake view. The final touches included new chandeliers, wall sconces, furniture, and accent pieces. “Most of the furniture is Temple Furniture—a midline vendor of mine that is high-quality at an affordable price,” says Christina. Today, David and Christina together with children Veronica and DJ spend weekends at the lake every chance they get. “We love it,” says Christina. “It’s just so refreshing out here!” Ready to find your weekend getaway? Or maybe simply the home of your dreams! Cynthia and the team at KWSW make it their mission to find exactly what you’re looking for. Cynthia says, “We have nearly 400 agents all working toward the same goal: helping you! I love that we found a house with ‘good bones’ and a great location that David and Christina could transform into a beautiful lakefront lodge. by Olivia Cane id you know that the simple act of smiling can make you happier? You don’t even have to mean it. Faking a smile works as effectively as the real thing because the brain interprets the muscle movement the same way, releasing a flood of happy-making chemicals called endorphins. Hugging, smiling, laughing—all of these activities, whether intentional or not, boost your endorphin level and can turn the crankiest curmudgeon into a cuddle bear. But what if a person is too embarrassed to smile because of missing, discolored or crooked teeth? Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. of Stafford has helped aspiring cuddle bears of all ages find their smile again. In fact, he and his warm, cheerful staff have been treating three generations of patients. “If you haven’t seen a dentist recently, you will be surprised to learn what options are available to you now, such as the CariVu system, which is a digital laser cavity detection system that more accurately detects decay without the use of X-rays. And The Pinhole Surgical Technique, which is a new surgical procedure for the replacement of receding gums and exposed roots without the use of a scalpel or sutures. Also, the FDA-approved Snore Guard®, which is an intra-oral device featuring Air Flow Technology™ that helps prevent the jaw and tongue from dropping back into the throat when you snore. Or the Velscope for the early detection of oral cancer. There’s also dental implants with all the stability and beauty of real teeth...but for 40% less than the usual implant costs. Whether you need a simple cavity filled or porcelain veneers to put the dazzle back in your pearly whites, we can guarantee you will leave here with a big grin on your face.” No insurance? And everyone has good things to say about St. Michael’s and their genuine concern for the patients that come into the ER. I’ve been to St. Michael’s myself with both immediate family and friends. It’s always a quick, yet great experience...and the staff is professional. I’ve known Dr. Shannon Orsak (cofounder of St. Michael’s Emergency Room) for a long time and I admire his commitment to this community. I’ve gone to him with questions on different medical issues, and he’s always happy to assist. Extremely helpful.” Founded in 2007 by brothers Brian and Dr. Shannon Orsak, St. Michael’s Emergency Room is truly one of a kind. Dr. Orsak says, “What many people don’t realize is that we have an on-site radiology department complete with x-ray and CT scan, ultrasound and an onsite lab…that way you
never have to wait for a diagnosis and a confirmation. We are staffed with board-certified physicians and specialty-trained nurses. We can treat everything from allergic reactions and broken bones to high fevers and chest pain. We take pride in not making you wait when you need help the most. If you do need to be admitted to a hospital, we can get you checked in faster by bypassing the hospital ER all together.” “We are not owned by a big corporation or venture capitalists,” continues Dr. Orsak. “Like Vincent, we live here and work here.” Vincent is credited with expanding the infrastructure and economic opportunities in the area during his tenure as mayor of Rosenberg. “His commitment to making this community a viable place to live, work and educate our children and grandchildren for years to come is in line with everything we stand for at St. Michael’s,” says Dr. Orsak. “I’m proud to call him a friend.” For more information about Vincent M. The Old Ways are the Best Ways
Campbell’s
by Olivia Cane COMPOUNDING PHARMACY t’s a sentiment Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy takes very much to heart. “At one time, the majority of prescriptions were compounded,” he explains. “Then in the fifties and sixties, mass drug manufacturing took the place of compounding. But the problem with mass produced medication is that it takes a ‘one size fits all’ solution and tries to apply it to everybody.” So what is compounding and how is it different? “At Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, licensed pharmacists combine, mix or alter the ingredients of a medication so that it’s tailored to the needs of each patient,” says Dr. Campbell. “We do this in a variety of ways, including liquids, gels, creams and ointments. Not everyone who needs medication can handle taking pills. A patient can also be allergic to the fillers found in mass-produced medicine.” “In essence, what we do is take a different approach to administering drugs...one that combines the best of the old with the precision of the new. This allows us, your compounding pharmacy, to work with you and your prescriber to customize a medication in the lowest possible dose that still delivers the results you need. Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy We also offer compounded pain-relief medications that won’t afflict you with side effects like drowsiness, “If our staff can’t make it… impaired driving, or upset stomach.” then you probably don’t need it!” But it’s not just humans of the two-footed variety that benefit from Campbell’s custom approach. A KOKO-SIZED THANK YOU! Koko FitClub opened its doors last month and the people of Fort
Bend County have responded. “Within one week of opening, we had almost fifty people take advantage of our 30 day trial membership,” says co-owner Veronica Malhiot. “This was before we even had a chance to hang the ‘Now Open’ sign. Thank you Sugar Land and thank you Fort Bend County!” So what are all these “Koko-Nuts” crazy about? A workout that’s different! “This isn’t boot camp training where you feel like you need to keep up with the rest of the class,” says Veronica’s husband and co-owner Mark. “This is personalized workouts at a pace that’s just right for you. You will never come in here and feel like a failure, because your goals are set specifically for you. You know exactly what to do and which way to go and you have personalized coaching every step of the way. You will enjoy it!” The Koko Fit concept started back in 2007. Mike Lannon (now CEO) was disappointed by the results both he and his wife were getting at a typical gym. After studying exercise science research regarding the importance of lean muscle mass and HIIT (high interval intensity training), Mike started experimenting with marrying technology to fitness—he had the computer regulate pace, reps, progress...everything. And it worked! Mike’s wife dropped three sizes in three months. Today, driven by the now patented “Smartrainer” equipment, Koko FitClub has expanded to more than 30 states. When you step into Koko FitClub, an initial consultation determines your fitness level and baseline measurements. Then Koko’s computerized equipment uses that data to design a tailored workout plan just for you, taking into account your goals and targeting all muscle groups plus cardio. With weight, pace, and rest time precisely cal-
culated, the patented Smartraining machines guide you through each workout—adapting as your fitness needs change—to constantly challenge the body. It’s always 45 minutes or less, and each session is filled with great information from a personal trainer. Ready to experience the difference for yourself? Koko FitClub’s grand opening special—a 30 days for $30 trial membership with no obligation—continues through the month of September. Become a “KokoNut” today!

Keeping Your
COOL In a Texas
Heat Wave
by Olivia Cane

hen the heat index is climbing up to 110 degrees and even the seatbelt of your car feels like a branding iron, you may sometimes question the sanity of people having ever settled in the Sugar Land area. In fact, rumor has it the Karankawa Indians, who originally tried to establish a colony here, experienced one week of southeast Texas’s broiling hot summer and decided to hightail it to the cooler weather of the coast. But the heat affects more than just your sanity. It affects your house and all the things in it. It’s the difference between going to sleep on sticky sheets or sheets that are crisp, clean, cool, inviting to the touch and conducive to a good night’s rest. And that’s exactly why having not just any air conditioning system, but the right air conditioning system, is the key to happiness during one of our notorious Gulf Coast summers. Just ask Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat. He’s installed more TRANE TruComfort XV20i air conditioners with
TruComfort ™ Technology in the Fort Bend area than there are bugs at a Texas barbecue. “The problem with an ageing or inefficient air conditioning system is that some parts of your house get too cold while other parts of your home have hot spots,” explains Brian. “Not only that, but your air conditioning is working overtime trying to cool things off, which means your energy bill goes through the roof. In some cases, energy bills start to look like mortgage payments.” “Another sign that it may be time to look at replacing your air conditioning with a TRANE TruComfort is when you start noticing moisture accumulation around the windows or your house feels muggy,” continues Brian. “Managing the Gulf Coast’s high humidity is a TRANE summer specialty. TRANE TruComfort XV20i is actually designed to combat our mold, moisture, and humidity issues. It’s the quietest, most efficient air conditioner on the market. And Jackson Air and Heat has been installing TRANEs in the Sugar Land area for more
than thirty years.” Now is the best time to invest in a highefficiency system that will make your family more comfortable and greatly reduce your energy bills. Brian says, “We are making it easier than ever to improve your quality of life by offering 0% financing or up to $2000 in instant rebates, and tax rebates and Centerpoint rebates are available too!” With a TRANE TruComfort system, it doesn’t much matter how high the heat index gets. You’ll have everything you need in order to stay cool this summer. Call today and let Jackson Air and Heat get you started!

say they will, and finish in the time quoted. Next up is painting our cabinets. I know that takes longer, but I also know Ziad will tell us what to expect and we can count on his word.” “Unlike 20 years ago, this last remodel has not been done by Ziad himself, but by his crew. Ziad shows up unannounced throughout the job making sure it’s done properly. I call him my own personal contractor, my ‘fix-it’ man. early 20 years ago, Gabriella Lischau hired Lone Star Floors to replace her floors. “We got several quotes,” says Gabriella, “and we were impressed with Ziad Mukhaimer (co-owner of Lone Star Floors). We could tell he cared about the quality of his work and the price was fair. I grew up in New York, and I’ve seen a lot of price gouging. This was not the case at all.” And the Lischau’s were pleased. “I’m a bit OCD and hard to please. I like perfectly straight lines in my tiles. My German engineer husband also demands perfection. Not only were our bathroom tiles perfectly straight, Ziad came back and sealed the grout for us. He really earned our trust from the getgo. We’ve had him back many times over the years.” Today, the Lischau family is working through the remodel of their current home. “We don’t use a private designer, and Ziad has really helped us pull the look together. In our kitchen and family room, we chose a tile that looks like wood and also replaced the countertop and backsplash. The countertop is quartz and we were struggling with picking the backsplash. I found what I wanted Mohamed elsewhere at 50% off. I texted Mark Ziad Ziad a picture and asked if Sam it would work. He said it was perfect. His crew also installed the sink, garbage disposal and water purifier... saving me a call to a plumber (and another expense!) where they attend school for hours each week. However, parents should also be aware that the State defines school-based therapies as supportive services that a student needs in order to learn. I absolutely encourage school-based therapy, but it’s important to realize that the level of schoolbased services will not match those services provided in a medical model...or your child may not even qualify for school-based therapy when they could, in fact, benefit from therapy. That’s Ellie’s situation.” Amy was Ellie’s teacher in a public school structured learning classroom for the past three years. She’s seen first hand the benefits of continued private speech therapy for Ellie. “Ellie’s mom kept us in the loop about what Ellie was working on in therapy, and provided us things to work on...things like pronouncing multisyllabic words. We just worked these items into Ellie’s school day. I do outside tutoring with both typical and special needs students. To me, private therapy is similar. Students develop a deeper relationship with the teacher or therapist in a smaller, more comfortable environment. With the students I tutor, it’s most beneficial if tutoring correlates to what is happening in school. The same is true of therapy. The more we Co-founder Paige Kinkade can reinforce what these children are working on elsewhere, the better we

She also received speech therapy through her school up until 6th grade, when she was no longer eligible for the program. Ellie’s mom still feels Ellie needs speech therapy. Is she right? The answer is “Yes.” Paige Kinkade, co-owner of Medcare Pediatric Group, says, “The State of Texas provides physical, occupational, and speech therapy through the schools to students with a need. It’s a great program and absolutely one that parents should take advantage of. Students are in a setting with their peers, working in the environment

Intervening and helping these children reach their potential.” “Here at Medcare,” says Paige, “our goal is simple. A higher quality of life for children with specific needs. We are more than happy to collaborate with anyone—parents, teachers, grandparents, babysitters, other therapists—that shares this same goal for your child. Ellie’s progress is thanks to many factors, including her therapy services and the collaboration of her fantastic teacher, Amy. We are here for you, just let us know how we can help.” In addition to speech therapy, Medcare offers occupational therapy, physical therapy, and pediatric private duty nursing to children aged birth to 21 years. Strength Building Without the Gym T
by Amy Sharp he SuperSlow Zone exercise methodology appeals to a variety of people. Some clients are busy, some don’t like the traditional approaches, many have no experience, and some are avid about exercise but need a better way. Kim Sawyer is one of those people. “I’ve worked out my entire life,” says Kim, Executive Coach, Speaker, and President of the WealthSource®. “Running, swimming, aerobics, yoga...you name it and I enjoy it. But I hate pumping weights...it bores me to death. So much that I wasn’t doing much weight workout despite understanding the benefits.” Kim became interested in SuperSlow Zone strength training when a friend in Atlanta put on 30 lbs of muscle mass in a couple of months this way. For three months now, Kim has been doing once a week strength building workouts at SuperSlow Zone® Sugar Land. “My goal is simple,” says Kim. “To build muscle strength, definition and mass without going to the gym. At SSZ, I work out one-on-one with one of the certified instructors. I usually wear workout clothes...but I frequently take my work clothes and change after without showering. It’s remarkable really. It’s 20-30 minutes, my muscles are worked to total failure, and I rarely break a sweat. I feel

Legal Issues that Affect Your Family —Who Can You Trust?

ecky Neese has served as the administrative assistant at Christ Church School, the Mother’s Day Out preschool program sponsored by Christ United Methodist Church, since the school’s inception in 1987. “In this position,” says Becky, “I get a lot of young parents asking for advice. The topics range of course, but lots of times these young people are looking for answers to legal questions. Many are just not at a point in their life that they’ve ever needed an attorney. Sometimes it’s as simple as leaving their children with a relative while they take a vacation out of the country...do they need to put anything in writing? Others are looking for information on wills and trusts, and still others are dealing with divorce and custody issues. My go-to—my number one recommendation for anything family law related—is local attorney Margie Connolly.” “When you work with Margie, she asks the right questions to ensure all of the angles are covered. I’ve worked with her personally a few times. A couple of years ago, I had her redraft my will. My kids are older now, and
the effects in all of my other activities. My knees don’t hurt when I run, swimming is easier, even climbing stairs is easier. As an added benefit, I have an enhanced body awareness. My muscles are worked so slowly that I really get an appreciation of the purpose of each muscle. I’m actually getting more out of it than I would if I did a typical weight workout!” The SuperSlow Zone® protocol is based on fatiguing muscle groups to momentary failure, so that muscles are built quickly, and done slowly to avoid the joint forces that occur with traditional strength exercises. It’s accredited by IACET, the same group that certifies GE Healthcare, The American Physical Therapy Association, and similar prestigious organizations. “I recommend it to everyone,” says Kim. “The triathlete, the swimmer, the runner, the fitness focused, anyone who needs to get started…and that finds going to the gym and pumping weights ‘bleh!’...yet wants the benefits of strength training. SuperSlow Zone® gets the job done!” Schedule a free consultation and sample workout today!

it needed to be updated. Not only did Margie make suggestions that I had not thought of, her price was super reasonable. She spent more time with me and asked more questions than the previous time I had a will drafted, and the cost was dramatically less. Plus, she is well prepared and has the process streamlined.” “On another occasion, I had a close friend that needed a divorce,” continues Becky. “Margie was an invaluable asset in looking out for my friend’s best Becky Neese interest. In this particular situation, the sticking point was getting the other party to sign. Margie was able to negotiate a mutually agreeable resolution. My friend is still singing Margie’s praises!” “In both my legal dealings with Margie and those of my friends, she has spent a lot of time and asked a lot of questions. She makes sure everything is done right and that you understand what is going on. It’s why I’m comfortable recommending her to the young parents at our school. I know she will take care of them!”

Family Tradition by Olivia Cane
alt Disney once said, “A man should never neglect his family for business.” Striving for the best life/work balance possible is what we all aspire to, and it was definitely something Alan Burkhalter, master plumber and owner/operator of Alan’s Plumbing, intended to achieve with his wife and three boys. More often than not when they were growing up, he found himself taking them to work, letting them tinker around with the tools, and marveling at their focus and ability. “Maybe plumbing skills are inherited...like music and medicine,” says Alan. “But all three of my boys—Jake, Beau and Luke—have the gift.” “The gift,” as Alan calls it, was passed down to him by his grandfather, an ironworker who helped build the San Jacinto Monument. “If it has to do with steel pipes or beams, for three generations now, we’ve been getting the job done. When my boys were about nine, they started riding the truck with me and my brother Chris...helping out with even the dirty jobs. They loved it all. Now they’re grown up, fixing plumbing throughout the Sugar Land area. Knowing what skilled,
honest, trustworthy plumbers they are gives me and my wife, Jennifer, the greatest joy imaginable.”
“We aren’t a big national corporation,” continues Alan. “We’re a true family-run business. We are personally obligated to stand behind our service and our prices because we aren’t answering to a board of directors, we’re answering to you.” Alan and his brother Chris, Alan’s wife Jennifer (the friendly voice you hear on the phone,) along with their boys, plus journeyman licensed plumber Jeff Johnson and apprentices Jaime, Trevor, Kyle and Robert are the reason Alan’s Plumbing has a reputation for getting the job done right the first time. “Honesty and professionalism are the two things I drill into everyone’s heads,” says Alan. “Our customers know we’re there for them—whether it’s an emergency water
heater situation or an invisible leak that’s wreaking havoc inside their drywall. We’ll move mountains to make sure the problem is taken care of at the fairest price.” “We aren’t a big national corporation,” continues Alan. “We’re a true family-run business. We are personally obligated to stand behind our service and our prices because we aren’t answering to a board of directors, we’re answering to you. And since we live in this community, we’re more than your local service providers. We’re your neighbors.” When Alan was 17, he went on his first plumbing call, which happened to be in Greatwood. “I knew I’d found what I wanted to do with my life and I never looked back,” he says. “Now my family is working beside me and together we can offer you the lowest price possible on the good work we do.” “When you call us, you can expect the best.”

EXCEED YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF CLEAN by Amy Sharp

hree years ago Crystal Helcel was looking for a cleaning service. “At the time,” says Crystal, “I had a housekeeper I was not happy with. I decided to look for a service and a friend recommended Mahoney’s House Cleaning. I interviewed both Mahoney’s and one of the large franchises, and I just liked Mahoney’s better. They are reasonably priced and the interview was more personal...not just a sales pitch.” And today, three years and a move to a new neighborhood later, Crystal continues to enjoy the personal service of Mahoney’s. “I’m very pleased. They’re quick—not here all
day—yet they do a great job. They bring all of their own supplies and equipment...no more running out continuously to get stuff. One of my biggest issues previously was my baseboards. We have both dogs and kids, and the baseboards just weren’t getting cleaned to my standards. The Mahoney’s ladies have a unique way of getting them clean and they do it every time they are here.” One of the perks of Mahoney’s is that if they see something that needs cleaning, they clean it...without you even asking! It’s part of their “Personal Touch” service. Crystal says, “I came home one time and they were cleaning my refrigerator. I was really surprised and happy! I didn’t expect that! Not only that, they never complain. If I’m here, I let my dogs out. But if I’m not they’re in the kennel and I know they must be barking like crazy when the ladies are here. Yet they never say anything. They just do a fantastic job over and over again.” Mahoney’s House Cleaning is fully bonded and insured and 100% guarantees their services. That means if a cleaning does not meet your standards, you call within 24 hours and they come back to redo it. Though, as Crystal has learned, that’s not likely. “I’ve given their name to friends and I recommend them to anyone that likes a clean house. They will exceed your expectations!” Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services 281-777-1526 mahoneyshousecleaning@yahoo.com www.mahoneyshousecleaningservices.com

his fall, the very first area Montessori Kids Universe opens right here in Sugar Land for preschoolers ages one through kindergarten. What sets this school apart? Everything! This is a unique hybrid of an authentic Montessori way of teaching, enriched with Montessori Kids Universe’s proprietary, Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum called DaVinci Kids. Here, your child will have the opportunity to develop into a joyful, confident learner who is prepared for success in school and life. Well trained and certified Montessori teachers act as guides, fostering the academic, cognitive, social and emotional development of your child. The Reggio Emilia approach is an educational philosophy focused on preschool and primary education. The curriculum is based on the principles of respect, responsibility, and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment based on the interests of the child through a self-guided curriculum. In this philosophy, children are believed “knowledge bearers,” so they are encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas about everything they could meet or do during the day. Montessori Kids Universe was founded by Nancy Poulos Boehm and Thomas J. Boehm. Nancy has founded, owned and operated 19 private schools. She is a strong champion of the Montessori philosophy with a desire to make a difference in a child’s life. Through her research she became intrigued by the Montessori pedagogy. “The outcomes observed in the children, compared with those in traditional child care programs, were astounding. Children were not only achieving academic advancements, they demonstrated a greater sense of peace, security and self confidence.” Lifelong area educator and author of Teenagers 101: What a Top Teacher Wishes You Knew About Helping Your Kid Succeed, Rebecca Deurlein, is the Director at Montessori Kids Universe,

Ages one through five are the foundational years for children—when they become who they are. Here at Montessori Kids Universe your child will learn skills and social graces that will stick with them for the rest of their life. I’m excited to be a part of the first school like this in Sugar Land!” In addition to the Sugar Land location, Montessori Kids Universe is coming to many prestigious locations in the Greater Houston area... including The Woodlands, Katy, Memorial, The Galleria and Riverstone.

Getting Kids BACK Into the Swing of Things by Olivia Cane

hat does “Back to School” mean to you? To a lot of kids, it’s setting down the video game controller and picking up a musical instrument. We are fortunate to have fabulous musical enrichment offered through our schools. But sometimes school band, orchestra or choir classes are just not enough, especially when students are competing at the UIL level. That’s where local icon Fort Bend Music Center can help with private tutoring! Craig Latson, Music Education Director at Fort Bend Music Center, says, “We offer far more than just a traditional musical curriculum. We work one-on-one with your child, and we focus specifically on the music they are competing with at UIL competitions. Winning first place may be the goal, but loving to play music is the byproduct. Whether lessons are taken privately or in a group, our emphasis is always on understanding music and mastery of the instrument.” Fort Bend Music Center also offers lessons and performance-based ensemble groups for homeschool students who may not have the opportunity to be in a band or orchestra.
But the real surprise is how many music students are on the older (and younger!) ends of the musical spectrum. “With the addition of our Tunes for Toddlers program and our Keyboard Encounter for Seniors (KES),” explains Craig, “we now offer music lessons starting at age 18 months to 100 and beyond. Moms take lessons while their kids are at school. Dads come over their lunch breaks. Whether you want to learn piano, guitar, saxophone, drums, violin, harpsichord, mandolin, banjo, accordion or singing, it’s never too late. We can teach it and you will love learning how to make music easily and effortlessly.” Since 1983, Fort Bend Music Center has been the Houston area’s go-to venue for music lessons, instrument sales and rentals, instrument repair, music books, and piano moving and tuning. “If it has to do with music,” says Craig, “we’ve got the answers. Our dedicated, world-class teachers have helped many students realize their musical dreams. to Protect Your Trees AND Your Property
I
n the fall, trees enter a dormant period. That’s why September is the perfect time to get your trees trimmed for both their health and their beauty. But did you know it’s a smart investment, too? Cammy Simpson of Simpson’s Tree Service says, “Storm and hurricane season is upon us... and the best way to prevent damage is to get your trees trimmed. A falling branch can cause serious
damage to the rest of the tree, your roof, your car, your neighbor’s property. We’ve had so much rain that our trees are quite heavy right now...and more susceptible to storm damage. Trimming will allow the wind to blow through the trees, reducing the risk of tree damage. But that’s not the only benefit. Many people lose their grass due to thick trees...trimming allows the sunlight to get through to the grass. Regularly trimming
and thinning your trees also helps prevent costly removals. Trees should be trimmed every two to three years, depending on weather conditions, so they can remain a beautiful asset to your property. We carry a million dollars in liability insurance, and our guys use safety equipment, ropes and harnesses. Our team will remove dangerous branches safely...to protect your investments!” “We have over twenty years experience in making trees beautiful and healthy,” continues Cammy. “Trimming in the fall lightens the load on the root system and encourages spring growth. Follow that with a good mulching to keep in the moisture and your trees will stay strong all winter long!” Simpson’s Tree Service is a familyowned and operated business. Cammy’s sons Nicholas and Brandon head the work crews and their team has been with them for years and years. Cammy says, “We’ll send out an experienced team to thin, trim and shape your trees...creating beautiful, healthy trees that add to your property value.” If you see those red Simpson’s Tree Service trucks around town, give them a wave...and call today for a free estimate! An Overwhelmingly Positive
Remodeling Experience L
by Marie Page
inda Havas got two estimates when she was ready to remodel her kitchen. One of those estimates was from Teri Gilberg (better known as “The Re-Modelista”). “Right from the start, I just had a great feeling about Teri,” says Linda. “She was very personable and interested in my ideas and what I wanted to do. The choice was easy.” Everything fell into place for Linda from there. “I had a picture in my head of what I wanted, and Teri brought that vision to life. She accompanied me on trips to pick the granite and backsplash. The backsplash was difficult. I was looking for something that wasn’t too busy against the granite I had chosen. Teri brought samples to the house in addition to joining me at several stores. She was so patient, and we finally found what I was looking for at Natural Stone Gallery.” The job also included removing wallpaper, painting the cabinets, walls and ceiling, new lighting and new trim—including baseboards, crown moulding and around the windows. “Teri’s lead contractor Hector is fantastic,” continues Linda. “Together with the crew of Danny and Nacho, they were very professional. They take great pride in what they do, and if it’s not perfect, they redo it. Part of the lighting included removing a large fluorescent
light box and replacing with a pendant over the island and can lights with dimmers around the kitchen. Our friends warned us matching the ceiling pattern after removing the fluorescent light box would be a nightmare. Hector and the guys matched the pattern perfectly! It did crack a little, and they pulled it down and redid it. Their commitment to perfection is unbelieveable.” “When we embarked on this remodel, Teri told us it would take four to six weeks. They did it in three and it’s great work! Hector was back recently for a small repair and telling me how busy they’ve been. I told him I wasn’t surprised, that you should be busy when you’re really good at what you do. It’s just been an overwhelmingly positive remodeling experience!”

Finding Faith, Making the Difference by Erica Martinez

ose Johnson knows what it is to have lived and trusted in faith in such an unpredictable world. On just an ordinary day back in 2002—as Rose was getting dressed to go to work like she had done everyday before—she noticed something different on her abdomen. “Maybe a cut?” she thought. Unknowingly, Rose had just discovered what was the sign of her Stage IV terminal colon cancer growing out of her umbilicus. Multiple physician visits and a lab test confirmed the deadly disease. Rose Johnson’s life was changed forever . As Rose tried to grasp the concept that she had terminal cancer...she was given another shocking report. She only had six months to a year to live. She decided she could not give up. She had just married her husband, and was caring for her two grandchildren. “After my daughter passed away, my grandchildren were left with me,” says Rose. “I made it a point to not leave them and have them go through another death. I would fight the battle.” After many years and treatments—and two recurrences—Rose beat the odds. In April of 2009, she was declared cancer-free. She had beaten this deadly disease and was alive and well. Rather than returning to her life from before, Rose felt God had placed her here with a purpose. She would help others... try and prevent families from going through the same pain she had endured. Rose founded the Rose B. Johnson Foundation in 2014. The mission of the foundation is to inform, educate and communicate with individuals and groups on the subject of colon cancer and its prevention, procedures, and treatments. The foundation gives people the opportunity to receive funds to help pay for tests that can detect the deadly disease. Rose also hopes to include raising and distributing funds to provide screening services for low-income, uninsured and underinsured citizens in our county.
“Each day is a gift that we take so much for granted until we find out we have an illness or cancer,” says Rose. “It’s the little things in life that I took for granted that are now so full of life. It’s beautiful being able to see these things. I love to just sit and look out at all the life.” Rose’s passion for saving lives and bringing awareness to the community through public speaking engagements and community events has become her calling. Through the power of prayer and her faith in God, Rose continues to stay positive and thanks God for allowing her to live her life of helping others. The Rose B. Johnson Foundation is a qualified 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and donations are tax-deductible. Your support is invaluable and appreciated. Rose B. THE DENTIST OF The High-Tech Texan by Amy Sharp
Radio personality and celebrity spokesperson Michael Garfield (aka “The High-Tech Texan”) has been seeing the same dentist, G. Byron Janik D.D.S., for about fifteen years. “I found Dr. Janik because he was conveniently located near my house and lots of my neighbors recommended him. When my three boys outgrew their pediatric dentist, they started seeing Dr. Janik too. Recently, Dr. Janik relocated to an office in Town Square. I thought he had retired. When I found out he was still practicing, I thought, ‘Yes! Great!’” So why has The High-Tech Texan stuck with Dr. Janik all these years? “The #1 thing in my line of work is customer service,” says Michael. “And Dr. Janik does this right. He knows how to treat clients and customers. He’s a good man, an upstanding guy, a family man. He has a great demeanor and that’s important... especially when dealing with teenage boys. He is also very accommodating. We’ve had a few dental emergencies over the years. My most recent was last week. I chipped a tooth, and immediately called his office. He got me into the first available appointment and explained the process, assuring me it was painless. In a matter of minutes my tooth looked brand new and Dr. Janik was right. No pain.” And not surprisingly, Michael likes that Dr. Janik is high-tech! “Dental technology has come so far so fast,” says Michael. “Trust me, a dental cleaning is way different now
than it was when I was a kid. I like that Dr. Janik has kept up-to-date with the tools and invests money in the newer products that are safer, easier to use, and less painful. I recommend Dr. Janik to everybody, whether you live in Sugar Land or not. He’s worth the drive!” G. Byron Janik, DDS 281-313-1565 15958 City Walk, Ste 230 Sugar Land, TX 77479 gbyronjanikdds.com
Be Cool Imagine a place where you consistently leave feeling better than you did when you came in. An enjoyable—yet quick—experience that produces an endorphin rush, tighter skin, reduced inflammation, pain management, the best night’s sleep ever, and potentially some weight loss too. Look no further. This cool nirvana—Restore Cryotherapy—has arrived in Sugar Land. While the technology may be new, the idea is as old as ice. Restore Cryotherapy owner Jim Donnelly says, “It’s easy to think of it as an alternative to cold water immersion or ice packs. The chamber is cooled with liquid nitrogen to a temperature of around -220° to -240° F. You spend up to three minutes in the cold. Your body reacts by undergoing vasoconstriction and centralizing blood around key internal organs. The blood becomes super-oxygenated and nutritionally rich, and resupplies the entire body once you exit the cold. This reduces inflammation, provides a boost of energy and increases the body’s healing properties. The therapy also boosts collagen production and triggers the release of endorphins, which induce analgesia (immediate pain relief ). It’s all natural and only takes minutes. You come out feeling invigorated.” Once only accessible to professional athletes and the wealthy, Restore Cryotherapy makes cryotherapy affordable for everyone. “We are in the business of helping people,” continues Jim. “We’ve helped children with skin issues, individuals recovering from chemotherapy, those recovering from car accidents or surgery, weekend warriors, those suffering from inflammation and arthritis, tired moms and individuals with careers that demand they stay on their feet all day. I’ve seen individuals break away from opiates and narcotics. Others don’t need the ibuprofen anymore. Plus, you sleep better and you feel great.” With its many wellness benefits, cryotherapy has helped countless everyday individuals change the trajectory of their lives. But Jim’s favorite success hits close to home. “My entire life, my dad was an avid golfer and loved to travel. After receiving three artificial joints, he got to where he didn’t do much anymore—just stayed on the couch. Being active was just too painful. That’s a miserable existence...I was literally watching my fun and active dad turn into an angry old man. With cryotherapy, he’s back to golfing three or four times a week and traveling a couple times a year. It’s not that we’re curing his pain. It’s just now he has an acceptable and all natural way to deal with it. His quality of life is exponentially different than it could have been. To see Dad rise from the ashes like a phoenix has been awesome!” In addition to full body cryotherapy, Restore Cryotherapy offers drip therapy, hyperbaric therapy, compression therapy and localized cryotherapy including to the face. “All of these additional services really complement the cryotherapy. When you come in, it’s a fun experience. And we promise—you’ll leave with a smile and feeling better than you did when you came in!”

hat’s in a name? At Dance Du Coeur—the dance studio at the entrance to Greatwood—name is everything. “Dance du coeur is French for dance from the heart. That is our philosophy...our intent,” says Dance Du Coeur manager Yvonne Landry. “To create dancers that perform dance as an art, rather than a sport.” “Too often, dance is approached with a formula mindset,” continues Yvonne. “It’s X, Y and Z steps to certain music to produce a routine. But that approach removes the art...and art (in all of its forms) is essential. It’s our connection to each other that makes life meaningful. At Dance Du Coeur, we’ve created an environment where students can explore and experience self expression and creativity, along with proper technique, with the goal of connecting to their audience in a beautiful and powerful way.” Since 2011, Dance Du Coeur has brought this enjoyable art form to students of all ages. Kids as young as 18 months attend Mommy and Me class. The 2 ½ to 6 year old crowd attend one of our area’s only Leap ‘N Learn certified curriculums. “In Leap ‘N Learn, we teach creativity through props and imaginative play. It’s a lot of fun and the kids are learning solid dance technique.” Ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and hip hop are offered in levels 1-5 for ages seven and up. “The majority of our teachers are young professionals dancing in Houston companies. They bring a lot of excitement and energy to our classes, their choreography is current and they are training on a daily basis so they are ‘with the times.’ They are joined this year by ballet master Richard Bowman, former senior faculty member of the American Ballet Theatre’s school in New York City and a former principal dancer for several prestigious ballet companies.” Also new this year are speciality classes including acrobatic arts (the only certified studio in Fort Bend) and African dance. “A live drummer teaches African dance and it’s open to adults,” says Yvonne. “It’s a high energy and intense cardio workout that anybody can do!” Other speciality classes include Aerial Silks, Modern, and Leaps and Turns. Dance Du Coeur is the only studio in the area that offers special “teen classes” in ballet, jazz, contemporary, and hip hop so that beginners aged 12 and up can dance with others their age. Dance Du Coeur is accommodating its growth this year by adding a fourth studio in the same building, which will bring the facility to almost 10,000 square feet. All floors are sprung wood (some with vinyl coverings) and there are viewing windows for parents. Dance Du Coeur also fields a highly successful competition team for ages five through 18. “They consistently stand out in competition because their routines are highly artistic and different, their technique is strong, their movement quality is amazing, and their performance is genuine, not forced. They bring meaning and purpose to all their work. That’s a very hard thing to teach and we work very hard at it.” Anyone is welcome to try a class for free at Dance Du Coeur! Simply call ahead to let them know. Bring your heart, because you’ll be dancing with it!
