lan Burkhalter and his wife Jennifer raised three boys together—Luke, Beau, and Jake. Along with Alan’s brother, Chris, they also raised a business: Alan’s Plumbing—Reader’s Choice award winner for the past ten years. Early on in the process of building their business, Alan and Jennifer realized that satisfied customers were the best business strategy of all. That’s why their business has continued to grow each year. “We don’t make up ‘special deals’ upfront to get our foot in the door and then bottom load your final bill with unforeseen expenses,” says Alan. “At Alan’s Plumbing, we earn your trust by being fair, honest and professional, with no surprises. We have to—you’re family.” And this family business has grown with Alan’s own family. “Since they were little, the boys used to beg to come along on jobs,” says Alan. “Even the ‘mudders,’ which involved digging long trenches in wet dirt. You couldn’t keep the boys off the truck then, and you sure can’t keep them off now.” And this year that family grew again when Luke married FBISD kindergarten teacher Chelsea, whose

is convinced that Luke and Chelsea’s marriage was a sure thing right from the start. “My wife Jennifer is overjoyed to finally have a daughter in the family,” says Alan. “She’s been waiting for this a long time.”
If you’re considering plumbing-related home improvements or you have a plumbing emergency, rest assured that you’re not only with family, but with family that is qualified. Alan’s a master licensed plumber and Chris, Luke and Beau plus Jeff Johnson are all journeyman licensed plumbers. Jake and apprentices Jaime and Trevor are working toward their journeymen license. Alan says, “Achieving certification is no small task. Hours of working under the watchful eye of a master plumber must be completed before a journeyman can qualify to take the two-day master’s license exam. We are very proud of our crew!” “Our commitment is to our extended family...all of you. You’re our great customers and neighbors, which is why we have devoted ourselves to providing the best customer service at the best price. From our family to yours, we wish each of you a very Happy Holidays. And we’re here for you when you need us. Just call us and see.”

ou’ve probably seen her around town in her “glammed to the nines” Fiat. Fifteen years and counting, Certified Expert of Permanent Makeup Deborah Akers has been your permanent makeup “it girl.” She’s not only the employee of month, but also the owner of Infinity Makeup. We’re probably all a bit envious of this fabulous little Fiat. She wakes up every morning looking just as good as she did during her previous night on the town. Even after a good rain shower or a run through the carwash, her strategically placed leopard spots are still in place and her perfectly accented “headlight eyelashes” are flawless...ready to take on her next adventure. Have you ever looked in the mirror in the middle of the day and one eyebrow has rubbed off? Not only are you missing an eyebrow, your eyebrow pencil is missing from your purse as well. No more! Deb says, “What I do is natural-looking permanent makeup, or makeup tattooing. Don’t let the name scare you...this process is pain-free. My specialty is color theory—I choose the best shades and shapes to compliment your unique face shape and skin coloring. And you won’t find thick, heavy permanent makeup here. What I do is a natural look. You don’t wake up with a ‘naked eye,’ just a perfectly accented one. We can do eyebrows, eyeliner, and lip liner too!” With one hundred percent waterproof permanent makeup, you will appear flawless throughout the day. In a holiday hurry? Wake up and run out the door looking fabulous. “I love using my skill and talent to bring joy to each of my clients,” says Deb. “Everyone leaves here with renewed confidence in their beauty and self-esteem. Waking up with makeup...it’s a perfect gift. I love that I’m able to give it over and over!” And when you see that pretty “Fiat rollin” around town, give Deb a smile and a wave. hen we try new things or meet new people, we don’t always know what to expect. It’s the same concern most people have when visiting a doctor for the first time. John Kubena decided to make an appointment with Dr. Ulises Baltazar because the varicose veins in his legs had been bothering him for some time. He’d seen a flyer for a seminar on varicose veins being offered by Dr. Baltazar, and even though he was unable to attend, some of his friends went and they liked what they heard. So the next time John and his wife Monica were in Methodist Professional Building 3, he stopped by Dr. Baltazar’s office and made an appointment for an initial consultation. John is on his feet a lot. His pain level had gotten so bad that it had become difficult to exercise. When he first met Dr. Baltazar, John liked his consultative approach. He said, “Dr. Baltazar gave me plenty of information to help me understand my condition. I became more aware of what was causing my varicose veins and how best to take care of myself in the future. He told me what could or couldn’t happen. I was given options and together we made a plan that was best for me.” John had little down time following his procedures and minimal discomfort. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery. He is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic, a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers as well as leg swelling. Dr. Baltazar has been diagnosing and treating diseases of the veins for over ten years. Dr. Baltazar has been named “Most Supporting Physician” and “Patient’s Choice.” He stays on top of current developments and innovative procedures. His patients know they are in good hands from their first consultation. Dr. Baltazar takes the time to get to know his patients and treats them with the timeliness and attention they deserve. John said, “Dr. Baltazar is always thinking about the quality of care for his patients. Working with him was an awesome experience. I have never had a doctor take such good care of me. I have recommended him to my brothers and my friends. The office staff and Dr. Baltazar treated me like a king.”

t’s nearly impossible not to look for the cosmetic surgery “seams” when poring over photos of gorgeous women over forty like Jennifer Aniston and Christie Brinkley. How does anyone look that incredible year after year without major help from a plastic surgeon? There’s no tightness around the mouth, which is one telltale sign of a bad face lift. They seem well able to make normal facial expressions. Incredibly, they look the same way they did twenty years ago. So how do they do it? Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Eric Humble of Sugar Land Face & Body specializes in just these types of “seamless” procedures, from face lifts and eyelid surgery to tummy tucks and breast augmentations. “Not every procedure is scar-free,” Dr. Humble explains. “But we do everything we can to hide them. My goal is to erase those imperfections that are driving you crazy...so you have all the confidence in the world to live your life to the fullest.” A big reason Dr. Humble knows what’s near and dear to a woman’s heart is because of his darling wife, Dr. Lin Humble. ecorated Marine John Onofrey and his wife Trudy raised their two kids Courtney (now married to son-in-law Luke) and Sam right here in Sugar Land. And it’s in this very location that John has built not one, but two trusted businesses: Top 2 Bottom Inspections and BUGCO Pest Control. The inspection business came first. Founded in 2003, Top 2 Bottom Inspections has been growing since day one. John, who is a Certified Master Inspector licensed for residential and commercial real estate, termite and pest control, pools and spas and thermal imaging, says, “We inspect properties all over Fort Bend and Harris County...working with many fantastic real estate pro-
fessionals. It was after we started doing termite inspections that our customers requested we do their pest control too.” So in 2007, BUGCO Pest Control was born. John’s longtime friend Chris Millward had years of experience in pest control with a national company and was immediately brought on board as a partner. John says, “Like me, Chris is a local guy. He lives right here in town with his wife Emily and their daughter Corinne.” And it’s that local knowledge that puts this team a step above the rest. “We live here!” says Chris. “So we know what pests to expect, and how to deal with them. We provide what’s called our ‘Perimeter of Protection.’ It’s a specialty technique performed around the exterior of your home that reduces the need
for additional applications inside. From general pest control to bed bugs, fire ants, rodents and mosquito misting, we can take care of you.” With both of his companies, John knows his success is hinged on the continued high standards he requires of everyone that works for him. “The quality of our product is paramount and integrity is our game. We pride ourselves on delivering honest, responsible and effective service, and the kind of personal touch you only get from a local, homegrown company at prices that won’t break the bank. The highest compliment we get is being asked back again or referred to your friends. We thank this community—our neighbors—for the continued support and trust. And from our families to yours, have a blessed holiday and a beautiful new year.”

A KW (Keller Williams) Southwest Experience
A
The Jindal’s Story
grim Jindal, a first time home buyer, met Ross and Carolyn McEathron of KW (Keller Williams) Southwest at an open house. “I had already started looking on my own, and what I liked about Ross and Carolyn was they were not at all pushy. Just kind and considerate. I messaged Ross soon after and asked if he would help us. I moved here from India two years ago, and was very green to the house buying ways in the United States.” “There are an abundance of reasons why I liked and would recommend Ross and Carolyn,” continues Agrim. “First, they are very patient. We looked at 40 to 50 houses and not once did I feel Ross was frustrated with us. Plus, Ross has years of construction experience which proved invaluable. When viewing a home, he could immediately tell the approximate age of the roof, the quality of construction, and if proper maintenance had been done on the home. That helped weed out some houses, as we didn’t have to wait for the inspection to learn those things.” KWSW agent, Ross, says, “Buying a home can be a very confusing process. That’s why Carolyn and I were thrilled to help Agrim’s family. As we delved into their situation and talked more about their needs, we counseled them about the things they should consider in a home when it comes to resale value...such as schools. They were looking in a specific area and we just couldn’t find the home they were looking

for. They weren’t in a hurry, and we kept telling them if they could be patient, the right home would come along. It took several months, but we finally did find a home for them with great schools...but it was overpriced. We negotiated a deal that was at 90% of the listing price and eventually 92% of the appraised value.” To see Agrim’s home buying to completion, Ross and Carolyn further assisted by helping Agrim find the right lender for their particular situation and providing recommendations for homeowners insurance. Carolyn says, “There are many facets to purchasing a home and it really can be confusing. That’s why we provide support and communication from beginning to end.” The Jindal family moved into their new home on October 9th and they couldn’t be happier. “The best way I can describe it is: Ross looked at each potential home as if he were buying it for himself. That’s the kind of service he delivered to us. I definitely recommend Ross and Carolyn to everyone. They are the most patient agents we met throughout the entire buying experience, and they have a thorough understanding of how the process works.” Are you ready to buy or sell? ou’ve probably seen them on the highway. Vehicles that look custom made for the company they represent. But did you know that it isn’t permanent and it isn’t a paint job? It’s a completely reversible process with a five year warranty called vehicle wrapping! It all started when tax service local business owner Fab Mendoza was looking for a company to wrap his boat. Coincidentally, he was also looking for a new business venture with longtime friend Bruce Prince—owner of a classic Chevy restoration shop in Houston. Bruce says, “We had been brainstorming new business ideas, and Fab was trying to find a company to wrap his boat. The companies he found were far from Fort Bend County and charged so much. We thought, ‘We can do that.’ We researched it, talked to others who had been in the industry for many, many years, found the machinery, and attended demos in San Antonio. We quickly moved from an idea to opening our doors in my hometown of Stafford, TX.”
And there’s no doubt you’ve seen CoverUp Graphic’s work driving around town. Among their highly satisfied customers are Greenscape Associates, Expert Collision Center and Ochoa Roofing. And wrapping isn’t just for cars...these experts can wrap anything from an 18 wheeler to a Yeti cup. Vehicle wraps can be full, partial, or just cuts...there’s something for everyone’s budget. Driven by the requests of their customers, today CoverUp Graphics uses their stateof-the-art, 64” wide, latex printer to print most anything you can think of. Vehicle wraps, signage, banners, posters, business cards, menus, canvas prints, car magnets and more. Have an idea, but no design? Work with CoverUp’s in-house graphic designer. “Our process is simple,” says Bruce. “We aim to create a product that meets your needs. We start by getting together in our conference room to discuss your project in depth, including budget and target audience. Then we come up with renderings—preliminary ideas to present to you. Here you give even more input to make sure we’re all on the same page. Then, with your approval, the renderings are taken to the final art. We take a strategic approach to insure a great final product, and everything is printed in-house. We have complete control over the high quality of every product we produce.” Bruce grew up right here in Stafford and is married to his Stafford High School sweetheart. Fab and his wife grew up in neighboring West Houston. Both are raising their families in Richmond. Are you ready to be seen every time you drive down the highway? Give CoverUp a call and “CoverUp and Be Seen!” People will notice...we promise! 281-942-7446 2015 Highway 90A Missouri City, TX 77489 www.coverupgraphics.com

Receding Gums? Here’s a Fast, Easy and Painless Solution by Amy Sharp r. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. in Stafford has been Peggy Fox’s dentist for more than 30 years. So when her trusted dentist suggested the Pinhole Surgical Technique, or PST, for her severe gum disease on the lower left side, she listened. PST is a brilliant and innovative solution to receding gums. Dr. Lomonte says, “Until recently, the only option gum recession sufferers had was painful skin grafts and sutures. After 1 Day But thanks to ingenious medical advancements, all that’s required now is a small pinhole Before allowing specialized instruments to reposition the gums. To complete the procedure, colPinhole Gum Rejuvenation lagen strips are inserted to reinforce the new gum placement and to stimulate collagen growth. It’s quite tolerable and involves minimal bleeding. It was the perfect solution for Peggy.” Peggy says, “It really was quick! I received local anesthesia, and was in and out in about 45 minutes. I experienced no pain. I had soft foods and soups for a couple of days, and didn’t chew on that side. I’m very pleased with the result. To be honest, I didn’t even realize how bad it was until I saw my before and after pictures. Wow, I couldn’t believe it! Fast, easy, not painful, and great results!” Dr. Lomonte has been practicing dentistry at his same Stafford location since 1982. He takes great pride in the level of care he gives to each of his patients and staying abreast of all of the latest advances in dentistry, like PST. Dr. Lomonte says, “Did you know that one single smile induces the same level of brain pleasure stimulation as 2,000 bars of chocolate? Think of the calories you will save by smiling. My job is to make you smile and smile often.” When you visit Dr. Lomonte, we guarantee that like Peggy, you’ll leave with a big grin on your face. Schedule an appointment Thomas M. When the Holidays Aren’t A Season But a Feeling that makes you SMILE! Merriam-Webster defines the word tradition as “something that is handed down.” That’s the lovely thing about the holidays, isn’t it? We are literally handing down from one generation to the next a way of doing things—be it the best way to make holiday cookies or the right time to light the candles. And there are as many traditions as there are families to observe them...from annual pilgrimages to see lights in other neighborhoods to huddling out in the yard with your brother-in-law and grilling the Christmas ham. For Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S., holiday memories are also built on family traditions...particularly the Lomonte Family Italian Sausage Party. Every November, Dr. Lomonte and his family get together to enjoy the

Southeast Texas sunshine, share Italian food and music, drink delicious Italian wine and take turns mixing and stuffing sausage with their secret family recipe. “My dad’s brother, Uncle Frank, started the tradition,” Dr. Lomonte explains. “His son—my cousin—continued the tradition, and now it’s my turn, so my son Matt and my daughter Natalie are also learning the secrets.” A graduate of Lamar University with a Doctorate in dental surgery from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, Dr. Lomonte is a proud native Texan with a traditional Italian flair. “Be sure to make your appointment before the end of the year,” he says. “We are really looking forward to seeing you.”

hen Johnny Jackson—founder of Jackson Air and Heat—was a young boy growing up in Oklahoma, air conditioning was something only rich families had. “He was one of eleven kids,” says his son Brian, now owner/operator of Jackson Air. “He had the swimming hole, a shade tree, and maybe a fast ride on his favorite horse. That was pretty much it.” Johnny spent four years in the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, which distinguished him as a man with an exceptional talent for “fixing stuff.” From there, he spent twenty years with National Cash Register (remember those?), and that’s what brought him and his growing family to Sugar Land in 1982. “It didn’t take long for my dad to realize how truly essential it was to have air conditioning in a climate like ours,” explains Brian. “After just one summer, he figured out there was a huge difference in terms of the quality and reliability of air conditioners. He could have gone with anybody, but he wanted the best—and the best is Texas
company, Trane, out of Tyler. Only a Trane system is powerful enough to do battle with Texas heat and humidity. Trane air conditioners will keep you cool and keep your energy bills low. Once you’ve experienced the difference, trust me, there’s no going back.” Today, Jackson Air & Heat is the oldest Trane dealer in Sugar Land. Right now it’s off season pricing and Trane’s offering a great deal: 60 months at 0% financing or instant rebates. “Our industry is changing. It’s no longer just about cooling and heating, but energy efficiency and indoor air quality. I started working with my dad when I was a teenager, and everything I know about air conditioning...I learned from the ground up. Thirty years later, I’m proud to say that we are NATE certified and multiple time winners of both the BBB Award of Excellence and the Angie’s List Super Service Award. Air conditioning is evolving, and we are committed to changing with the times. But there’s one thing that will never change at Jackson Air. Customer service. Without top-notch customer service, we wouldn’t have a business no matter
how many years we’ve been in the area. And that’s why when you call Jackson Air & Heat, we show up. Not a subcontractor, it’s us. Eighty percent of our customers are referrals from previously satisfied customers. We work hard and we’re honest. And we know that our product line is unrivaled for Fort Bend County’s sweltering climate.” If you call Brian at Jackson Air & Heat this holiday season, he probably won’t show up in a Santa beard and a red suit. But he might just bring you what you really need— air conditioning!

Keeper says, “I’ve been a ‘Sushi Man’ for over 25 years, and I put my whole heart and even my name into this. We believe in holding ourselves to the highest standards...and our menu holds delicious choices for every taste and budget.” They say you can judge a Japanese restaurant by its Chirashi. This dish of assorted sashimi quality fish arranged over rice arrives at the table with pink and red fish shining like jewels against the black lacquered box. Many Fort Bend residents previously unsure about sushi have left Keeper’s loving it. And the sushi aficionados are spoiled...they won’t eat it anywhere else! HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

arbara Bacon proudly served in the United States Army for fifteen years, including combat duty during the Persian Gulf War. During that time, she demanded a lot of her body and recovered rapidly. She says, “When you stress your body out when you’re young, you just bounce back. You keep moving (or marching) forward.” As part of her Army training, Barbara participated in a road march where she marched for miles with a full rucksack, gas mask and M-16 rifle. One serious injury came from falling from a tower 15 feet and landing on her side on hard packed sand. Over the years, Barbara found managing her pain from earlier injuries to be a focused and time consuming assignment. Moving from town to town and locating a doctor she could trust became a real challenge. A year and a half ago, Barbara returned to Sugar Land with her husband, Jerry. This past May, the pain started in her right hip and began to get progressively worse. She says, “The pain was unrelenting. It would wake me up in the middle of the night.” She tried everything, including two osteopaths, another chiropractor and an orthopedic consultation, and there just didn’t seem to be a solution that would work for her. Someone in Barbara’s yoga class suggested she see Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center. Barbara says, “By the time I saw him on October 5th, I looked like a cripple. I was scared and miserable. All of the staff at Sugar Land Health Center were wonderful and upbeat; they made me feel like they were genuinely concerned about me. When Dr. Harris asked me why I was there, I told him, ‘I want to be pain free and I want 100% range of motion.’” Dr. Harris just celebrated his 40th anniversary in his chiropractic practice. He is known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach. Dr Harris likes to determine and address the underlying causes of symptoms. Dr. Harris did a thorough review
of Barbara’s case and said, “Everything I found is treatable.” After six weeks of treatment, Barbara smiles as she reports that she is 95% pain free. “I can walk. I can sit. I can stand. I’m finally off pain meds. And most importantly, I can sleep through the night.” Barbara also reports that she is a half inch taller since beginning treatments with Dr. Harris. She says, “I would recommend him to anyone. I have had impressive results in a short amount of time.”

Then in 1991, together with my mom Marlene, he opened Plaza Jewelers in Sharpstown Mall.” This is a jewelry legacy like no other...set apart by the intimate relationships created with each and every customer. “My dad’s done little advertising...the business has grown based on word of mouth from our clientele.” “Often times people find buying the perfect diamond stressful,” continues Alex. “But here at Plaza Jewelers, it’s not that way at all. We get a feel for what you like and your budget, and we walk you step-by-step through the process of both selecting a diamond and a setting. Want to combine aspects of two or more settings? With a designer in-house, we use CAD/ CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) to create a setting you love. We make a 3D wax rendering of your design...and if you still love it, we build it. We take as much time as you need through the process. Our goal is for you to leave with a diamond that you love, that looks great, and is not a burden on your wallet.”
“ We make a 3D wax rendering of your design...and if you still love it, we build it.” Samir and Marlene raised their family right here in Sugar Land. Alex—a Baylor graduate and now Head of Marketing at Plaza Jewelers—is a graduate of Clements High School. In 2014, after 30 years, the Dharia’s moved their business home. Today Plaza Jewelers is located just off the Southwest Freeway near Sugar Creek. Inside you’ll find more than 40 showcases of engagement rings and wedding bands, and a large selection of diamond stud earrings, fashion diamond jewelry and Swiss watches. So Do Insurance Companies

T
he Affordable Care Act has been anything but affordable to the American people. In fact, since the implementation of the ACA, insured’s premiums and deductibles have skyrocketed while the profits of the insurance companies have skyrocketed as well. With the 3rd quarter of 2016 behind us, many Americans are wondering how they are going to pay their insurance premiums and deductibles next year. In the meantime, the insurance companies brag. One company’s financial report shows how they outpaced the S&P 500 stock index (the barometer of the US economy) by showing that if you had invested $100 in the S&P 500 you would only have $171. However, an investment in their stock would have grown to a value of $400 (almost 2.5 times greater return). Another insurer boasts on their website about record numbers in operating earnings, making an increase in profit while insuring less lives. All of this comes at the expense of the 16 ~ UPCLOSE ~ December 2016
American people. According to an article on bizjournal.com, as Americans struggle to pay their premiums, the compensation to insurance executives has increased by as much as 23%. To make matters worse, insurance companies are denying claims which they are legally obligated to pay. One example: “My wife had surgery and the insurance company didn’t pay the anesthesia bill. They told her she didn’t have anesthesia benefits.” After threatening legal action, the insurance company finally paid the claim they were obligated to pay. Another case: a lady fell and shattered her hip at DisneyWorld. She had to have emergency surgery. The insurance company told her since she went out of state and the hospital was out of network, they were not going to pay. After learning how to file an appeal, they paid what they were legally obligated to pay.
What should you do if an insurance company doesn’t pay your claim correctly? The insurance company will tell you to file an appeal. In fact sometimes you have to file as many as three appeals to get something paid. The State Attorney General’s website says: “The Office of the Attorney General reviews the broad practices of insurance companies as they market their products and pay benefits. This agency has authority to sue under Chapter 541 of the Texas Insurance Code, as well as the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, to prevent those in the ‘business of insurance’ from taking advantage of Texas consumers. The Office of the Attorney General accepts complaints about insurance practices. Complaints may form the basis for legal enforcement actions. These actions are taken on behalf of the State of Texas and the public interest, and may in some cases result in restitution to consumers. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) is the state agency charged with regulating the state’s insurance industry under the provisions of the Texas Insurance Code. TDI can refer some cases against insurance providers to the Office of the Attorney General for legal action.” This sounds great...except TDI only has a handful of employees to handle thousands of complaints. Brian Orsak, CFO of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, says “I suggest you file a complaint with TDI, file an appeal with your insurance company, let your employer know about problems you are having, and also send a letter to your elected representatives letting them know about the problems. They are the ones who pass the laws and it’s important for them to know of these issues.”

CA H on the Spot A Resale Dream! by Amy Sharp
I
n 1991, Peter and Esther de Smidt moved from their home country of The Netherlands to Amarillo, TX with seven suitcases and a two week old baby. “My dad became a physical therapist in Holland,” says son, Oscar. “And they moved to America to live the dream... to make it happen.” Make it happen they did. Peter has enjoyed continued success as a physical therapist. Esther—who has an eagle eye for design—used her talent as an interior designer and home stager for more than 15 years. Nearly a year ago they decided they were ready for a change...a family business they could run together. After much soul searching, they decided to open a Clothes Mentor franchise. “I love fashion and design and have always loved resale shops,” says Esther. “Clothes Mentor was a favorite of mine back when we lived in San Antonio. When we discovered there was not one in the Greater Houston Area...we knew we had found what we were looking for.” Located on Town Center Blvd just behind Sugar Land Town Square—between Old Navy and Ulta—Clothes Mentor is a totally new kind of resale shop. “Bring us the clothes you no longer wear, and we pay cash on the spot,” says Esther. “This is not consignment. Then we resell the items in our elegant, upscale store—where it’s designer wear at a fraction of retail cost.” From Gap and Old Navy to Gucci and Louis Vuitton—and everything in between—Clothes Mentor pays you to clean out your closet. “We buy and resell women’s clothing sizes 0 to 26 and maternity. We also love handbags and jewelry.” And coming soon: the Clothes Mentor Personal Shopper. Esther says, “Fill out a
survey with our app and schedule an appointment. When you arrive, I will have pulled a rack of items for you to try on based on your size, your taste, your needs and your lifestyle. It’s what I love...designing. And it will be a free service!” Clothes Mentor is buying your items for cash today, no appointment necessary. Ready to shop? “Watch our Facebook page for details on the Grand Opening: December 8th-11th. We already have some great inventory and we can’t wait to sell it to you at a fraction of retail cost!” Clothes Mentor ~ 346-309-2498 2581 Town Center Blvd N. New Year, New Start...For Your Preschooler!
C
by Amy Sharp lean environment. Healthy eating. Innovative learning. Is your preschool or daycare holding up to the standards you’ve set for your child? Time to check out Montessori Kids Universe, the brand new, state-of-the-art preschool right here in Sugar Land. Montessori Kids Universe is hailed as the “real deal” when it comes to Montessori. It’s Montessori down to the wooden learning materials, community garden and play area in the brand new backyard (no plastic here!). This healthy environment includes organic hot meals freshly made and delivered daily, and catered to all dietary restrictions. Head of School, “There are a multitude of advantages to a brand new Dr. Rebecca Deurlein preschool,” says Head of School, Dr. Rebecca Deurlein. “It’s cold and flu season, and we are as close as you can get to a germ-free environment. The school is new and all of the materials are new, right down to the cribs for our smallest students. And it’s a great time to enroll...our class sizes are small. Fewer kids mean fewer germs!” Don’t worry, the cleaning methods are strict Montessori as well. “Our desks and materials are wiped down multiple times a day. Not only are we currently as close to germ-
free as possible, we intend to stay that way!” says Dr. Deurlein. Perhaps you’re thinking it’s a pain to change preschools in the middle of the school year. Take heart...it’s not. “If your child is already enrolled in a school, or even if he or she has never been in school, we can fill out paperwork one day and have your child in class the very next day,” says Dr. Deurlein. “And your first uniform is included as part of your tuition. It’s really very easy!” Make 2017 the year you’re more resolute than ever to providing a clean environment, healthy meals and innovative learning to the little people in your life. Enroll at Montessori Kids Universe today (ages six months to six years welcome)!

PUTTING EXTRA SPARKLE IN YOUR HOLIDAYS by Olivia Cane
T
exas does the holidays like Texas does everything: Big! But that means everyone’s to-do list keeps getting longer each year—more errands to run, more crazy traffic to wade through. So what’s the one job you would outsource to someone who is as honest as she is hardworking and reliable? Maybe a whole team of super-cleaners who are ready to make your life—and your holidays—the best they have ever been! Meet the house cleaning professionals at Mahoney’s House Cleaning Service. For almost ten years, they’ve been making homes immaculate in the Houston-Sugar Land area. Mahoney’s House Cleaning started when mother-of-two, Imelda Mahoney, drove halfway across town to clean a client’s house. Most of what she made on that job went to gas and babysitting, but as the business expanded, Imelda reached out to the other moms in her community for help. “Our neighbor across the street watched the kids,” Imelda’s daughter, Casandra, remembers. “And some of the moms helped my mom with the cleaning. Together, they made Mahoney’s House Cleaning what it is today. So a big shout-out goes to our community for
their continued support and trust. We love you!” Another big reason for the success of Mahoney’s House Cleaning is that they never turn down a cleaning project. They can do a onetime clean or even just a “sparkle” for your holiday party, luncheon or get-together. Need help with interior holiday decorating? They can do that too! “I had knee surgery a few years ago and needed help with my Christmas decorating,” client Catherine Bond reports. “The ladies at Mahoney’s got all of my boxes down from the attic. We baked cookies, lit a fire, and put on Christmas music...and then they helped me put up my tree, lights and decorations. Mahoney’s House Cleaning is now part of my Christmas tradition!” If you or someone you know is looking for a last-minute gift idea, try a Mahoney’s House Cleaning gift certificate! Even better...the purchaser of the gift certificate will also receive $15 off their own house cleaning. Now is the time to discover for yourself what it’s like to have your life made a thousand times better. Welcome home for the holidays!

e are smack dab in the middle of the holiday season and you are busy: the decorating, the shopping, the wrapping. But somewhere in the back of that frantic mind, are you dreading hosting the family dinner on Christmas Day? Do you wish you had spent the fall sprucing up your home for holidays? Jonee and Paul Barnett, owners of local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing, can help you bring that kitchen up-to-date and make sure your bathrooms are ready to welcome guests... all before the big day! Jonee says, “We can typically fully refinish your surfaces within a two to three day time frame...which means the space in your home will only be out of commission for a few days.” Two to three days? We start with a professional cleaning and surface restoration. This miracle fixes chips, cracks, spots, stains, and lackluster finishes. We can transform porcelain, ceramic, laminate, acrylic, or cultured marble surfaces.” Miracle Method Surface Refinishing is proud to be accredited members of the BBB. Thanks to a multitude of satisfied customers, they enjoy an A rating on Angie’s List and have won the Angie’s List Super Service award multiple years. Ready to get started? Jonee says, “Call us for your free estimate. Then give us just a few days, and we’ll give you a holidayready home that looks like new!”
One of the best gifts you can give a loved one is the Miracle Method Safety Package. A Fabulous “New” Home Without the Hassle of Moving by Marie Page
L
aura Winters moved into her house in 1999. “We’ve only repaired things,” says Laura. “We’ve never remodeled. So we were ready to do pretty much everything!” Laura had read about Teri Gilberg (better known as ‘The Re-Modelista’) in this publication and others, and she decided to give her a call and inquire about remodeling her home. “Teri is just really easy to work with. This was my first time to remodel, and I had ideas on what I wanted. Teri was able to tell me what was feasible and what looked good, including accompanying me on several trips to Floor & Decor.” The remodel on the Winters’ home including gutting the master bath and rebuilding it, adding a walk-in shower with two raindrop shower heads. Nearly all of the flooring in the house was replaced, and all countertops were replaced with granite. In the kitchen, cabinets were repainted, all of the appliances were replaced, and the bar was cut down to counter height. A double sink was added in the laundry room for convenience. Laura says, “We like to entertain. So in addition to just updating our home, we wanted to make it more conducive to entertaining. We knocked out a wall and glass fireplace between our family room and breakfast nook to open the area. We also had Teri build a wine cellar into the under stairs closet!” “It was a lot of work throughout the house,” continues Laura, “and Teri and her crew always tried to keep the inconvenience to a minimum. They made sure we always had a working toilet and shower. Not only was Teri really skilled at pulling my ideas together, she’s really good about watching prices. We had a budget, and not only did she stick to it, she came in under!” Now when Laura entertains, she often finds herself recommending The Re-Modelista. “A friend recently saw our new shower and wanted the same for her home. She’s calling Teri! As for me, I love the end result. I’m having Teri back to do some work outside.” Laura adds, “I hate packing and I hate moving. Teri gave me exactly what I wanted: a fabulous new home without the hassle of moving!”

Get More from Lone Star Floors
It’s All About Family by Amy Sharp
O
ne question Mohamed Naser, co-owner of Lone Star Floors, hears often: How does he and his wife Susan celebrate the holidays? “I’m Muslim and Susan is a Christian,” says Mohamed. “But we both grew up in Palestine, the birthplace of Jesus Christ. We understand and appreciate the celebrations of both. All five of our kids and our four grandkids will be at our house Christmas morning for gift giving, lots of eating and many kisses from Susan. It’s also a day that Susan gets spoiled by me...because she’s worth it and she’s earned it! And it’s the same for Muslim celebrations and holidays. We don’t look at celebrating both as a clash...it’s actually very common in Palestine. Humans are humans...and there’s nothing better than celebrating with the ones you love.” Together with his cousins, Ziad Mukhaimer and Imad Mansour, Mohamed opened the doors of Lone Star Floors more than 30 years
ago. The three have a large family...twelve kids between them, and all grew up playing in their stores. And in 30 years, that family has grown tremendously. “Grandkids, of course,” says Mohamed. “But our customers too. You’re our extended family. When you walk through these doors, you’re not seen as a number, you’re always greeted as family.” This family-owned and operated business has enjoyed an A+ rating with the BBB every year of its existence. With a high level of customer service and quality products, more than 75% of their business comes from referrals and repeat customers. In addition to flooring, Lone Star Floors does full kitchen and bathroom remodeling—including plumbing, shower glass, painting and granite. “Take the time to enjoy yourself and your loved ones this beautiful season,” adds Mohamed. “I know I will. And from the bottom of my heart, ‘Thank You.’ None of this would have been possible without the continued support of you, our customers. Functional Medicine. What Does That Mean? by Amy Sharp “Functional medicine means looking at the root cause of why you have symptoms, problems, or a chronic disease,” says primary care physician and owner of Balanced Body Image, Dr. Julia Ward. “We’ve fallen into a pattern of making a diagnosis and prescribing a drug. Have diabetes? Here’s a pill. Depressed? Write a prescription for an antidepressant. But in functional medicine, we strive to understand why your sugar is so high or why you’re depressed (and it’s usually a combination of a lot of things). Then we treat the why with nutrition, lifestyle changes and natural supplements. When needed, I still use traditional medicines...but I always try to go natural where possible. There are far less side effects using natural methods and supplements than there are with traditional medications.” “To practice functional medicine,” continues Dr. Ward, “one has to be much more of a generalist. A GI doctor specializes in the digestive system. A kidney doctor in kidneys. But in functional medicine, we’re looking at the whole picture. Most of my patients come in without a specific diagnosis. They just don’t feel right. Some have even seen a doctor...and after all standard blood tests came back fine, they were told they were ‘good to go.’ My job is to figure out why you don’t feel right, and then help you feel better. I aim to fix the problem, not just treat the symptoms.” When you seek treatment with Dr. Ward, she runs baseline blood tests, including the traditional tests. Then she runs other functional medical tests based on your
symptoms, which can include additional bloodwork and stool analysis. “I usually test your thyroid as well, and may do a neurotransmitter test and a four point cortisol test if I suspect stress is a factor. Micronutrient and gut health testing and others are also possibilities based on your individual case. If I suspect you are a candidate for bio-identical hormones, I do urine and/or saliva tests based on the way you prefer to have hormones delivered. Then once I understand what’s going on, I can get to helping you feel better.” For all bloodwork and functional
medical tests, the lab will submit a claim to your insurance company. As a wife, mother of five, and practicing physician, Dr. Ward knows how difficult life can be when you don’t feel like yourself. She has her own functional medicine success story. “I was very fatigued and run down. Functional medical tests uncovered that my fatigue was in part due to an MTHFR genetic mutation...where I process B vitamins less efficiently. By treating this condition and utilizing hormone replacement, I feel 100% better. If you don’t feel right, I’m confident I can do the same for you!”

ASK MARGIE
The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:
Life Changes Fast... Don’t Wait!
B
by Amy Sharp
ack in 2002, Rose Johnson was diagnosed with Stage IV terminal colon cancer and given six months to a year to live. Although she resolved to battle and beat the disease, Rose also knew she needed a will. “I made one up really quickly...handwritten,” says Rose. “I didn’t know whether I was going to live or die, but I wanted my wishes followed through in the event of the unthinkable.” Fortunately, Rose’s story did not end there. After many years and treatments—and two recurrences—Rose beat the odds. In April of 2009, she was declared cancer-free. “Cancer out of the way, I knew I needed a better will. Legal documents are confusing, and I wanted it worded so that my wishes would be carried out exactly as I intend. I called Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly to help me.” “It’s crucial a will is exactly the way you want it to be,” continues Rose. “It’s your voice after you’re gone. Throughout the process, Margie was so, so patient. I called her a week after the first draft to make changes. She was
able to take care of everything I asked, and never had a frown on her face. Always a smile, and she always had time for me. I felt as if I was her only client, and her prices are excellent for the time she puts in with you. She’s very pleasant, patient and kind. A wonderful individual and lawyer.” “In sound mind and health, I signed my new will on my 73rd birthday. Life changes fast, and I encourage everyone to create this important document while in sound mind and health. Don’t do what I did the first time. I’m grateful for this second chance, in so many ways.” Rose is the founder of the Rose B. Johnson Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to inform, educate and communicate with individuals and groups about colon cancer and its prevention, procedures, and treatments. The foundation gives people the opportunity to receive funds to help pay for tests that can detect the deadly disease. Visit www.rbjohnsonfoundation.org for more information.

Heart and Soul by Sara Adams

elebrating its one year anniversary in September, Off the Vine Bistro is known for feeding the hearts and souls of Fort Bend County. Owners, Namita and Manish Asthana, offer their restaurant to help local nonprofits and area schools raise money. Namita says, “We are built by the community, so we like to give back to the community.” They have offered their support to Texana, Fort Bend Literacy Council, Meals on Wheels, Sugar Land Heritage Society and many others. Before she opened the restaurant, Namita created a line of gluten free simmer sauces after suffering from undiagnosed food allergies for years. Her simmer sauces were selling
well in Farmer’s Markets and to local chefs. Off the Vine Bistro uses her sauces by serving food cooked from scratch using locally sourced foods from respected providers. Because everything is cooked fresh in their kitchen, special dietary issues are easily accommodated. Everything at Off the Vine Bistro has been carefully selected to offer the best in flavor and experience. Each family member contributed their own area of expertise: the world class wine list was carefully selected by Manish, the wide array of craft beer was chosen by their son Sam, and their daughter Sasha put her own personal twist on the espresso and coffee offerings. Off the Vine Bistro is a place
to gather with your favorite people and enjoy a quiet meal in an intimate setting, or music on the patio every Saturday night. Once a month they have wine tastings and a 5 Course Wine Paired Dinner. Visit their website and checkout the calendar. You can even reserve the entire restaurant for private parties. In November, they had back-to-back private Thanksgiving dinners. Both groups were so happy with their parties...they decided to call it a “Friendsgiving.” You can experience Off the Vine Bistro six days a week, or book your own “Friendsgiving.” Just be prepared to enjoy pure, fresh, local food that will nourish your heart and soul. Look as Young as You Feel! by Olivia Cane
M
ary Jane Wimberly, medical aesthetician at Decree Beauty, has spent the last eleven years helping people who want to look as young as they feel. “There are so many non-invasive ways to restore your skin to its former beauty. Winter is the perfect time to get a medical grade chemical peel or a photofacial because you aren’t spending as much time out in the sun.” “Once you come in for a free consultation we may decide to do a photofacial. This is a terrific treatment for sun damage, wrinkles, broken capillaries, rosacea and age spots. I’ve seen people look five years younger after just one procedure...and we can treat the face ($200), neck ($175) and chest ($200) with no needles, no downtime, and complete confidence in the results. Photofacials have a 93% approval rating on RealSelf!” “A medical grade chemical peel is a resurfacing procedure that rejuvenates dull sun damaged skin and helps decongest oily individuals with acne. This treatment is not only for the face, but can be used on other areas of your body.” Decree Beauty has some of the most competitive medical chemical peel prices in town for your face ($75), arms ($175), legs ($275) and back ($100). Another perfect winter time beauty treatment? Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for hair removal. “Hair removal usually takes six sessions...you’ll be done by summer!” One new product that Mary Jane wants all of her clients to know about is the Luxurious Lift and Firm Protein Serum for $40. “It’s ‘Magic in a Bottle,’” she says. “I can put it on just half of a woman’s face and 90% of the time, that woman will purchase it. The product lifts the jaw, fills the cheek area, and tightens the eyes. We currently have a special on our Decree Beauty products…buy one for $40, but if you buy two, the price is only $70, or three for $100.” Don’t wait. Let Mary Jane make you even more beautiful today!

uring the holidays, your family is everything. In addition to working (at home or in an office), you’re cooking, cleaning, decorating, buying presents, and picking relatives up at the airport. Starting to feel like your only wish is to survive the holidays? You’re not alone! “The holidays are supposed to be about enjoying family,” says Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. and owner of Campbell’s Compounding. “But if you want to take care of other people, you must first take care of you. That starts with making sure you’re at peak operating efficiency. All too often, the cause of our fatigue is hormone imbalance—even something like too long a period of time on antibiotics can upend your hormone levels. What’s terrific about a compounding pharmacy is we’re able work with your doctor to correct conditions like that with the specific amount of medication required...because we are making it ourselves.” “Instead of rounding it up or rounding it down, we customize your dosage just for you,” continues Dr. Campbell. “And we can do that for a variety of medications in a variety of forms—creams, lozenges, lollipops, all in different flavors. If you or even your kids hate taking medication, don’t worry, we have a solution Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy for you. We even compound medicine for pets!” “If our staff can’t make it… Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy carries all commercially available medication as well, then you probably don’t need it!” making it the perfect one-stop-shop.
