Fish?

f you do, have you visited Fishing Tackle Unlimited—Sugar Land’s fishermen’s oasis? Founders Joe and Danny Meyer know a thing or two about fishing... they’ve been doing it all their life. “Our dad Johnnie was an avid fisherman,” says Joe. “I was fishing by age five. I’ve fished much of the Texas Gulf Coast.” The Meyer brothers began their fishing careers at Heights Tackle House in the early 1960’s. Joe eventually went to the University of Houston to study Business, and later served as a Regional Sporting Goods Manager for K-Mart. Danny joined the Air Force. After his service, Danny became a sales representative for various tackle manufacturers. Their experience and passion for fishing, business, and retail lead them to the idea of opening their own retail store. Joe says, “In 1979, we got a 1,250 square foot store on Telephone Road, stocked some quality inventory that was a good fit for local fishing, put up a ‘Cut Rate’ sign, and we’re in business.” Thirty-eight years later and now called Fishing Tackle Unlimited, the brothers operate three locations. This isn’t your big-box sports store. Fishing Tackle Unlimited remains independently owned and specializes in being the best. The store is beautiful and the products are top-notch—including Shimano, Simms, Columbia, Costa Del Mar, Daiwa, Jackson, and many more. The staff is courteous, competent and knowledgeable. If you have a question, they have an answer. “We are just fishing, nothing else,” says Joe. “We have the best assortment of rod and reels out there, and one of the largest rod and reel building and

repair departments in the South. We’re a #1 dealer for Shimano and Diawa, and the Simms waders are the best on the market. We recently had a fisherwoman complain the waders never fit her right. Come to us...we’ll order you a custom pair!” Fishing Tackle Unlimited has a complete fly department with experienced fly fishermen on staff. Their pro anglers spend most of their days on the water, from Louisiana to South Padre. FTU also has complete departments for Blue Water, trolling motors sales, service and installation, rod building, kayak sales and rigging, and fishing apparel and gear. If it’s about fishing, they’ve got you covered! A long-time supporter of the Coastal Conservation Association, you can catch the Fishing Tackle Unlimited fishermen

ob Zlotnik has been involved in organized baseball since he was eight years old. An invited walkon for the University of Texas, Bob then coached his own three boys through Little League and Select Baseball. Employed as a public accountant early in his career, Bob always knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur. He put together several business ideas, but didn’t have the guts to pull the trigger. “Then I worked for a couple of entrepreneurs,” says Bob. “And I thought, ‘Hey, I can do this!’ My wife Marcie is of the same entrepreneurial mindset, and together we started StarTex Power.” Bob’s life was forever changed one day while reading the newspaper. “I read about a team coming to Sugar Land, and we started calling around to see what we could find out.” StarTex Power—shortly thereafter bought by Constellation Energy—purchased the naming rights to the field, and Bob and Marcie became minority owners of the Sugar Land Skeeters. Prior to last season, the

Zlotniks became the Skeeters’ full owners. “We had many unhappy sponsors and season ticket holders,” says Bob. “We started surveying customers to understand how we

could enhance their ‘Skeeters experience.’ This is a family entertainment venue. Whether you’re a sponsor, hosting a picnic or birthday party or just bringing the family... you have a right to expect great service. We wanted to be associated with a place where people leave happy. Our new President, Jay Miller, is the best. He’s very customerfocused, and he knows every season ticket holder. If a customer is not happy, he

works very hard to make them happy. What I’ve learned over the years is that some of our most loyal customers come when their issues are resolved. We’re all human, and we all make mistakes…but how it is handled and corrected can really make a person feel good.” Recent improvements at Constellation Field include higher quality concessions and improvements in service. Prior to last season, a poll revealed 80% of fans would come back or recommend a Skeeters game to their friends. Today that number is above 98%. Giving back is a large part of who Bob is. Little League teams and charities can get rebates on Skeeters game tickets and even special jerseys that can be autographed by the Skeeters and put up for auction. Baseball started for Bob in his hometown of El Campo, TX. Today, El Campo Little League plays in a beautiful facility called Zlotnik Park. Bob and Marcie serve the University of Texas on many levels, giving time, energy, and money to the school. And in his spare time? Bob goes to a lot of baseball games! He says, “The best way to know how good your product is, is to experience it for yourself. We’ll see you at the game!”

ou may not know Jamie Fairchild, but there’s a good chance that you have benefited directly or indirectly from her involvement in our community. She is a Certified Texas Master Naturalist. She donates her time and wisdom to various projects in our area that help preserve, protect and restore this Gulf Coast Prairie we call home. She is also very active in the Fort Bend Education Foundation and Monarch Gateway. In addition to her volunteer work, Jamie has a busy family life with her husband and two daughters. When Jamie first heard Dr. Ulises Baltazar speak at an event sponsored by Methodist Hospital, she was impressed by his thoughtful and thorough explanation of what really happens inside our veins. She says he explained things in a way that was both interesting and enlightening without ever making the audience feel like he was talking down to them. She decided that Dr. Baltazar was the vein specialist she was looking for. Jamie had been dealing with spider veins in her legs for twenty years, and lately she was experiencing some swelling and fluid in her left knee along with a cluster of varicose veins behind her knee. Jamie says, “During my initial consultation, Dr. Baltazar took the time to clearly explain the possible outcomes of my procedure. He stressed the difference between a medical issue and a cosmetic issue. I was happy we were able to do the ultrasound in his office and it was a relief to find out what was going on inside my leg.”

Jamie’s vein ablation was done in office with minimal discomfort. She says, “Dr. Baltazar recommended a staged approach for my sclerotherapy. His caution and follow up was very reassuring.” Jamie had very little down time and has not missed a beat with any of her volunteer responsibilities. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist with a reputation that goes beyond the Fort Bend County, Sugar Land area. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, and a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers as well as leg swelling. Don’t let your daily responsibilities keep you from scheduling a consultation with Dr. Baltazar. He will conduct a thorough examination, explain your options, and have you back to your regular activities in no time.

ugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery is excited to announce the addition of dermatologist Dr. Filiberto Cedeno Laurent. Dr. Cedeno Laurent always thought he would would follow in his father’s footsteps and become a pediatrician. “But in medical school, I discovered I really liked immunology. I was very interested in the way our body reacts with the environment, and how the body fights bacteria, viruses, infections and cancer.” Dr. Cedeno Laurent was the first Mexican accepted into the Immunology PhD program at Harvard Medical School. His interest in malignancies and melanomas further peaked in the Department of Dermatology at Harvard, and he decided to stay in dermatology. After a five year der-

matology residency at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Dr. Cedeno Laurent joins Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery. “I’m very excited about bridging dermatology and plastic surgery,” says Dr. Cedeno Laurent. “It’s a combination not fully explored. I will be practicing the full spectrum...children to the elderly and cosmetic and skin products to noninvasive and invasive procedures. We have the most cutting-edge technology available, and nothing here is cookiecutter. Plus, I’m a conservative doctor. I don’t push procedures and I always work with your budget.” Dr. Cedeno Laurent speaks fluent Spanish. He and his wife Marcela are thrilled to move their family to this area. “We’ve spent a lot of time in the Northeast...we are

ready for warmer weather!” At Sugar Land Face & Body, every member of the team is brought onboard after rigorous scrutiny that not only assesses professional expertise, but also mines for the human component of genuine care. “The addition of Dr. Cedeno Laurent is no exception,” says founder, Dr. Eric Humble. “With dermatology, we are expanding our array of professional services. We continue to strive to be the pre-eminent facility in the Sugar Land and greater Houston area for personal transformation through the medical arts of plastic surgery and skin correction techniques. We invite you to drop in anytime and see our warm and inviting facility. And please join me in welcoming Dr. Cedeno Laurent to our family!”

J

ohnson Development—the award-winning development company that for more than four decades has set the standard for the nation’s finest master-planned communities—is honored to present this year’s Couture for the Cause at one of their newest Fort Bend communities: Harvest Green. Couture for the Cause is the premier Fort Bend County affair benefitting The American Cancer Society. This year’s event, “Garden Glitz,” will celebrate and honor the life of longtime Johnson Development employee, Carolyn Williams. Carolyn lost her 13 year hard-fought battle with cancer on June 14, 2016. Johnson Development Co-President and COO Doug Goff says, “I have never seen a more courageous woman. No matter how she felt, or that she had been at MD Anderson for eight hours the evening before...she was at work with a smile on her face. She worked for Johnson Development for over 10 years, first at Sienna Plantation in many different roles and then at the corporate office. When other people would have given up, Carolyn always asked what she could do for you. It was never about her. We are all proud to have called Carolyn and her husband Allan friends.” Evidence suggests that one can reduce their risk of cancer by making healthy choices like eating right and staying active. This correlation makes The Farmhouse at Harvest Green the perfect setting for Couture for the Cause. Harvest Green is Houston’s first farm-centric community. Chairman and CEO Larry Johnson says, “It’s a concept that’s taking root around the country. A ‘healthy living’ planned community with community gardens,

6 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2017

optional resident backyard gardens, a Community Supported Agricultural Program, and a Farmer’s Market every week...plus lakes and waterways, greenbelts and open space, parkland and a walkable trail system.” For Larry, this “agri-hood” development experience brings him full circle. Larry grew up on a farm and raised crops in the Texas panhandle. The highlight of Couture for the Cause is the fashion show, featuring couture models—many of whom are cancer patients or survivors—seizing their own opportunity to give back. Past models include Larry and his wife Suzie, both cancer survivors. This fashion show is selflessly produced by Lenny Matuszewski with hair by the team at Milagro Salons, makeup by LaDonna Marie of Sugar Land Face & Body, and clothing by Dillards. Guests enjoy food stations from area restaurants, plus a wine pull, Big Board auction, and “Baubles & Bubbles” raffle sponsored by Marlene and Samir Dharia of Plaza Jewelers. Visit the Couture for the Cause Facebook page and vote for your favorite 3D image of a custom Bauble to be made and raffled off the night of the event. 2017 chairs are Monique Bossett, Susan Ley-Novosad, Debbie Marcell, Michelle Royster, Margot Sayre and Gina Pizzini. Honorary chairs are Scott and KK West...the very first Couture for the Cause chairs back in 2009. Join us October 14th in The Farmhouse at Harvest Green. This year’s Couture for the Cause is sure to be an evening you won’t soon forget!

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

He Helped My Neck Even After Two Surgeries

P

by Sara Adams rior to suffering a herniated disc while playing touch football in college, Kathy Hart led a fairly active, athletic life. After the accident she had some difficulty, but she was careful and adjusted her lifestyle to accommodate the injury. In 2001 that disc ruptured and the two discs above those were herniated. It took two surgeries and six weeks of physical therapy to begin the recovery process. She had some residual pain and a few physical restrictions, but for the most part, everything seemed okay until last summer when the pain in Kathy’s neck began to escalate. By October, the pain was so bad she couldn’t lift her arm to write on the chalkboard or turn her head. She even had a hard time looking down to grade papers. Kathy has been teaching biology, chemistry and physics for almost 14 years for Schola Home School Classes at Providence Presbyterian Church. She says, “I was raised by medical people. My father was a MD and my mom was a RN. We were not a family to seek chiropractic care. We believed in science and traditional medicine. However, during my recent flare up I was exhausted, in pain and I did not want to have another spinal surgery. My husband met Dr. Steve Harris at a Rotary meeting and suggested I schedule a consultation with Dr. Harris.” “I felt at home the minute I entered Sugar Land Health Center. I interviewed Dr. Harris, asking him all kinds of questions. I wanted a reason not to go anywhere else, but I had to be sure. Dr. Harris patiently answered all of my questions and said he would review my x-rays and come up with a personalized plan. Dr. Harris was so kind, so helpful and knowledgeable. He did not talk down to me, he acknowledged my knowledge. I went home and shared the information with my husband Barry. We prayed about our decision and decided that Dr. Harris was the right doctor for me. I have seen dramatic results since I started my treatments with Dr. Harris. I am back to an almost normal quality of life. I was impressed to learn that the college education of a chiropractor is eight years, which is the same as a medical doctor degree.” Dr. Harris offers chiropractic care, pain relief, spinal decompression, and rehabilitation. He is well respected among his colleagues and the community as a philan-

TAKE THE GUESSWORK OUT OF THE GYM by Amy Sharp

rad Berwick and his wife were looking for a workout program. “I have a military and law enforcement background. I really needed to get back into it, and my thoughts on working out consisted of pushups, situps and two mile runs. My wife has never done a workout program, but she consistently swims and walks. For both of us, the problem with gyms is you get there and...what do you do? What are the right things to get in shape?” Then Brad’s wife read about Koko FitClub in a local magazine. At Koko FitClub, the patented Smartraining machines use your own data to custom design a workout plan just for you. The machine guides you through each workout, shows you step-by-step how to perform the exercises, and adapts as your fitness needs change. “My wife showed me the article and we were intrigued. They had a great trial period and the gym is right around the corner from our house. So

we decided to check it out.” A month later, Brad and his wife are officially Koko-nuts. “I went in hesitant, but it’s everything they said and a lot more! The gym guesswork is absolutely gone. Your plan is mapped out, including how fast to do each exercise and how many reps. Plus, there’s a ‘human’ fitness trainer available to guide you. The fact that every workout is under an hour also appeals to us. And the owners Veronica and Mark Malhiot are awesome. There’s no judgement, just real people.” After one month of doing Koko FitClub three times a week, Brad and his wife feel excellent. “It really feels like we’re doing something right. Someone just commented yesterday that I look like I’ve lost a little weight. My wife was already pretty fit from walking and swimming, but now you can see a big difference in her muscle tone. I’ve recommended Koko FitClub to my colleagues and my neighbors, and I signed up as a member even before my trial period was up. It’s a great program!”

lbert Einstein once said, “Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value.” Dr. Marco Vargas— founder of Foot & Ankle Associates, one of the most comprehensive podiatry centers in the Southeastern United States—is a medical professional who has taken that advice very much to heart. To him, success is measured one happy, pain-free patient at a time. Finding treatments that work on chronic conditions like plantar fasciitis, soft tissue injuries or tendonitis is something that Dr. Vargas has dedicated his life to. “Sometimes conservative care for micro-tears, scar tissue, or chronic inflammation only goes so far,” explains Dr. Vargas. “When a condition persists for longer than six months and doesn’t respond to bracing, physical therapy, steroid injections or orthotics, we have the AmnioFix Injectable as an option. My patients are seeing tremendous improvement with this non-surgical, outpatient procedure.” 10 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2017

AmnioFix is a skin substitute product that helps your own cells repair damaged tissue. It also reduces scar tissue formation and greatly reduces inflammation. The treatment is better than steroid injections because corticosteroid (steroid) injections don’t help damaged tissue to regenerate. Once the injections are finished, the pain returns. “But AmnioFix actually repairs the damage,” says Dr. Vargas. “So for patients whose soft tissue pain is extensive but isn’t responding to NSAIDS, the right shoes, not going barefoot and other conservative treatments, AmnioFix might be the answer. Over a million people suffer from plantar fasciitis alone. One injectable, a few days of staying off the sore foot or ankle, plus continued use of recommended treatments such as orthotics... and my patients are leading normal lives again.” If you or anyone in your family (including kids, weekend warriors, or anyone with a sportsrelated injury) needs a bilingual, solution-focused podiatrist in the Sugar Land area, Foot & Ankle

ort Bend personal injury lawyer Scott West is a proud Christian, husband, father of four, and a native Texan. He has a reputation around town for being a kind man, son, brother and friend to the community. So it’s no surprise that he chooses to do business with like-minded people and businesses. Scott says, “I’ve known Ray Aguilar (Classic Chevy Business Development and Community Relations Manager) for more than a decade. I met him through his charity and community work, and I’ve bought three cars from him and Classic Chevy Sugar Land. Ray pours his heart into both his community work and his professional work...that’s the key. With Ray, the answer is always ‘Yes.’ Then he wants to know the question.” With four kids, Scott has purchased two Suburbans and a Tahoe at Classic Chevy. “Each time, the buying process could not have been any easier,” says Scott. “If you were to create a menu of what you would like in a car buying experience, Classic Chevy Sugar Land has all

He perfectly describes our culture here at Classic Chevy. This is a warm atmosphere and we are a family. General Manager Jeff Sebastian and General Sales Manager Brandon Sine are good ole boys that will look you in the eye with a firm handshake. There’s no funny stuff here.” If your car buying experience isn’t what it should be, the team at Classic Chevy encourages you to “Find New Roads.” Jeff Sebastian says, “When we say ‘Relax and Enjoy the Difference,’ we mean we empower our salespeople to make decisions. Here, there’s no back and forth with unseen managers lurking behind closed doors...just fair dealings. The quality of their work is great. They are prompt, do what they are supposed to do, and clean up after their work. This company never disappoints. I was extremely pleased both times they were here. It’s fast service and delivery, courtesy and professionalism with market comparable prices. All of my neighbors who have used their services are equally pleased and think highly of their staff and services. Where Patients Become Friends by Donna Reed hen Joni and Scott Honn talk about dentists, there’s only one name that comes to mind: Dr. Thomas Lomonte, their dentist of nearly 20 years. “When I moved here to get married,” says Joni, “I first went to Scott’s dentist at the time. I didn’t really like him very much, and I don’t like going to the dentist anyway. Dr. Lomonte and I became friends through the Fort Bend Optimist Club, and I started seeing him as my dentist. Scott eventually met him and liked him as well.” “Dr. Lomonte combines professional with personable,” says Scott. “I don’t like going to the dentist either. But Dr. Lomonte makes you feel comfortable right away. It’s kind of like going to see a friend, rather than getting all uptight about having to see a dentist. He is a really good dentist, but he’s not arrogant about being a doctor. He makes you feel like he will be there to help you all the way.” “If he wasn’t my dentist, I probably wouldn’t go twice a year to get my teeth cleaned,” adds Joni. “I mean, I have a real phobia about dentists.” In addition to the yearly cleanings and checkups, Joni was fitted with Invisalign and Scott has had oral surgery for a receding gum line. “We have been very happy with everything.” Recommending Dr. Lomonte to friends and family is always easy. “We have sent a lot of clients his way, and they always say he is very good at what he does and very reasonable too.”

I hear it from my patients and my staff that Campbell’s is very easy to work with. Some of what we prescribe for compounding requires a fair amount of instruction, including self-injection therapy for erectile dysfunction and custom compounded testosterone. The pharmacist must explain in great detail how to use the medicine to the patient, plus how to store it, etc. The staff at Campbell’s does a great job and is always available for questions. I’ve also noticed that the quality of meds at Campbell’s is far superior to others...their chemists do a great job. I’ve tried other compounding pharmacies and no one beats them.” The level of care that Dr. Hananel and his patients experience at Campbell’s Compounding is the pride and joy of founder, Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. hen it comes to singing R&B, nobody warbled tunes like The Jackson 5. Their song stylings and dance maneuvers are rivaled by no one. But when it comes to air conditioning, nobody can beat Sugar Land’s own “Jackson 4” at Jackson Air & Heat: patriarch Johnny Jackson, company owner Brian Jackson and Brian’s two sons, Brian and Blake. They may not be able to moonwalk, but they can fix anything air conditioning related... and in a Southeast Texas summer, who would you rather have knocking at your door? In addition to being Sugar Land’s go-to experts on TRANE Tru-Comfort air technology, the “Jackson 4” have roots that aren’t just deep—they’re Texas deep. Johnny Jackson, the company’s founder and one of eleven children, served his country as an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force. He realized early on that not only did he have an aptitude for working with tools, he loved anything mechanical. If it had parts, he could fix it.

After his stint in the Air Force, Johnny went to work for National Cash Register. In 1976, the company transferred him and his family to a little known (at the time) Houston suburb called Sugar Land. It didn’t take Johnny long to realize just how necessary good air conditioning was in “muggy and miserable” Houston. He founded Jackson Air & Heat and the company took off. “Everything I know about air conditioners I learned from my dad,” says Johnny’s son Brian. “And there are three things he taught me that I’ve taught my boys—best product, best service, best price. That’s why we became the largest independent TRANE air conditioner dealer in the area. TRANE units are the most efficient units available, especially in our ultrahumid conditions.” Growing up in the family business made Brian particularly aware of the unique air conditioning needs of Southeast Texas. “It’s not just heating and cooling anymore,” says Brian. “It’s energy efficiency and indoor air quality. As houses get bigger, energy demands get bigger too. Only a

TRANE system can handle the extra load and still keep costs down. It will cool every room in the house, remove humidity, and work without all the racket of an off-brand air conditioner. Ask anyone with a TRANE unit and they will tell you.” Better still, customers may be eligible for 0% APR financing or some impressive Centerpoint and TRANE rebates. “We’re a team,” says Brian. “My sons Brian and Blake and I are continuing a thirty-five year tradition of giving you the best possible customer service. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall we’ll be there...your comfort is our business!”

ack in 2000, Compressor Engineering Corporation President Richard Hotze had LASIK surgery. “It should have never been done,” says Richard. “That year, I had LASIK twice and radial keratotomy surgery once. At the end of the ordeal, my eyes were screwed up so bad I was wearing a soft contact piggybacked with a hard contact plus glasses just to be able to see.” “I did this for more than 15 years. I lost multiple contacts over that time, and experienced recurring eye infections. About every three months, I had to go blind with red eyes for days to clear up the infection. My ophthalmologist told me I needed to see this guy out in Sugar Land...that he was my best bet. I sat on that information for three years until I finally acted on it and scheduled an appointment.” The guy out in Sugar Land is Dr. Tom Arnold at Today’s Vision. Dr. Arnold is one of very Dr. Tom Arnold few doctors in Texas who fits custom scleral contact lenses— large-diameter gas permeable lenses specially

designed to vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the “white” of the eye (the sclera). “I got my first set a year ago,” says Richard. “And they’re unbelievable. It’s the most comfortable lens I’ve ever worn in my life. So comfortable, I can wear them for 18 to 20 hours a day easily. I’ve had no eye infections with the scleral lenses, and you can’t lose them...they won’t pop out.” Six months after being fitted with scleral lenses, Richard discussed his remaining need for reading glasses with Dr. Arnold. “What Richard was experiencing is presbyopia,” says Dr. Arnold. “Presbyopia is when your eyes gradually lose the ability to see things clearly close up. It is a normal part of aging, and it’s why you see so many people over 40 with ‘readers.’ But we can accommodate presbyopia in a multifocal scleral lens.” After receiving his multifocal scleral lenses, Richard threw away all of his reading glasses. “I’m now 20/20 when looking far away or reading my computer screen. I’m 57 years old, and Dr.

Arnold has given me my sight back!” “I feel at home in Dr. Arnold’s office, and he’s a joy to have as a counselor on my vision,” adds Richard. “He’s just delightful. I would send anybody that might be a candidate for scleral lenses to Dr. Arnold.” Today’s Vision • 281-242-2020 15337 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.2020sugarland.com

Being of Italian heritage, I take great pride in sifting through the avalanche of mediocre wines and delivering the highest quality.” With his business growing at an unprecedented rate, Tony found time to take care of the not-so-pleasant things in life. “My wife and I needed to do some estate planning and update our living wills. A KW (Keller Williams) Southwest Experience

Stephane Sol and Linda Wang’s Story

irst time home buyers Stephane Sol and Linda Wang were frustrated. Linda says, “Every time we saw a house, our agent’s assistant wanted us to make an offer immediately. We rarely even saw our agent, just the assistant, and we just weren’t comfortable. I posted on Nextdoor looking for direction.” Ross McEathron of KW (Keller Williams) Southwest saw Linda’s post and reached out to her in a private message. Ross says, “I reached out a few times, then one day out of the blue Linda called and asked me to run some comparable sales for her on a property. I ran my usual neighborhood analysis and sent it to her.” Linda was shocked by what she received. “Ross sent over a lot of facts, along with a clear analysis and reasons for making different decisions. It was nothing we had seen before, and given the stats he provided I suspected he would be a fierce negotiator. From that point forward, we made Ross our agent. He attended every showing and shared a lot of information with us. Throughout the process, he was super responsive. It honestly felt like we were his only client!” Linda and Stephane were interested in staying in the area where they were renting...which had great schools and low property taxes. Ross says, “Homeowners that live in the areas where those two things come together realize how lucky they are, and the

turnover is very low. This made it more difficult to find a home, and the homes that came on the market didn’t fit their needs. At KWSW, it is very important that clients find the home that is right for them. In the end, we had to modify our search area, but we found a home Linda and Stephane really liked. I felt the home was overpriced and had other potentially negative issues, such as the age of the roof. I gave them my analysis and told them I would not go over a certain amount. They asked me to get it down another $5,000...92 ½% of the listing price. I had my work cut out for me, and we got the home under contract at the price they wanted. After the inspection there were a few issues that needed to be addressed. We asked for two things to be repaired and for $1,700 to do some work we felt was important. Both were accepted by the seller.” “We got a phenomenal deal!” says Linda. “Ross is the expert in everything house. It’s scary to be a first time home buyer, and Ross took care of us every step of the way with complete honestly. I tell everyone, ‘You can’t go wrong with Ross!’ He’s really amazing and we love our new home.”

“It honestly felt like we were his only client!”

ocal RE/Max real estate agent Todd Riddle of Team Riddle knows a thing or two about that. His wife and business partner Linda has been extremely happy since she started seeing functional medicine specialist Dr. Julia Ward at Balanced Body Image. “It’s a one-stop-shop to getting healthy,” says Linda. “Todd and I know Dr. Ward. She’s a former client and a friend. I went to her for hormone therapy because she’s a woman, she’s physically fit, and she understands women’s hormones. She’s more hands-on and really understands my needs and what I’m going through. I just feel more connected to her.” Linda’s intuition is right, Dr. Ward understands. She actually started researching functional medicine when looking into bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for herself. Dr. Ward says, “During that process, I realized that hormonal imbalances could be the root E AG of a lot of symptoms. I can tell you... IM with hormone therapy, I feel 100% better.” When you seek bio-identical hormones with Dr. Ward, she may run blood, urine and/or saliva tests based on the way you prefer to have hormones delivered. “We always deliver the hormones estrogen and testosterone as either a pellet inserted under the skin or as a transdermal cream. Accommodating, Professional and Reliable...on Your Schedule by Amy Sharp

bout two years ago, Susan McMahon was contemplating a new cleaning service. “One day I saw the Mahoney’s House Cleaning car, and I wrote down their number. Shortly after, I read an article about them in UpClose—a publication that had featured my own business years ago. So I decided, ‘OK, time to do this.’ And gave them a call.” Susan could not be more happy. “The owner Imelda Mahoney and her daughter Casandra are terrific. They are more than accommodating, highly professional and reliable. If part of my normal crew can’t make it, they send someone that can do the job. Just my husband and I live in the house, and I travel quite a bit. Most weeks we only clean the downstairs. But if we have guests coming, I let Casandra know and they get the upstairs ready. Casandra’s communication about when they will be at the house and what we are doing is beautiful. She texts each week asking if we need service and if it’s upstairs or down or both. I never have to guess what’s going on. If I need extra work done, I just ask and they take care of it without hesitation. I’ve had them take care of extra cleaning before events, and even had a couple of the young ladies assist me with a party at my house. If you need your garage organized, they’re right there with you taking care of it. They are willing to do whatever you ask.”

Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services serves all of Fort Bend. All of their ladies are insured and have undergone thorough background checks. As Susan discovered, they can work on a schedule that’s convenient for you and are also available to do almost any type of house service you can think of. Casandra says, “Time not spent cleaning leaves more time to spend with family or friends. Let us help you!” “I highly recommend Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services,” adds Susan. “I just love Casandra and her mom!”

or local Milagro Salons owner Mark Anthony, continuous and updated education is the key to providing high quality salon services. And Mark’s education? You could say it started at birth. “My dad learned his trade as a young man and opened his first barbershop in Richmond, TX when I was a young boy. I went to work in the barbershop every Saturday and Dad taught me everything he knew. In 1986 I switched careers from the oil business to the beauty industry, and in 2004 opened my own salon and I’ve never looked back. My dad’s memory always inspires me, whether I’m working to train the next generation of emerging artists or creating a cuttingedge look for one of my wonderful guests. I founded Milagro to offer ‘miracles’ of creative cut and color design...at prices everyone can afford.” As one of the first AVEDA Cutting Purefessional Educators in Texas, Mark Anthony travels around the country teaching classes to other professionals. He’s responsible for the delivery of Aveda’s new collections in cut, style and color, and he personally trains all of his staff. New emerging artists train on Mondays for a minimum of six months. The rest of the team attend training once a month, or once a quarter. “Milagro Educator Jessica has been with us for seven years and Lead Colorist Tiffany for 13 years. We aim to be professional, educated, and trendy. We’re here to give you cut and color you’ll love!” This year Milagro Salons is celebrating its 13th anniversary...and Mark Anthony has loyal clients who have trusted their hair to him for

more than 25 years. “Early in my career I worked in the Galleria area; I wanted that experience. What we do is bring that quality of work to Fort Bend County.” Mark’s word is backed up by his clientele in the surrounding Houston area and as far away as College Station. A priority at Milagro is giving back to the Fort Bend community that has given them so much. The team has helped raise money for Juvenile Diabetes, the Alzheimer’s Association, and for more than five years the Milagro team has done hair for the models at Couture for the Cause, the premier Fort Bend event benefitting The American Cancer Society. This year’s October 14th event is no different. “It’s a small token we are able to provide...to contribute to finding a cure.” Are you ready for a high-quality salon experience right here at home? A 30-Year-Old Home Upgraded in Five Weeks!

R

by Marie Page

ick Taylor bought a new house 30 years ago. So when he paid off that mortgage last July, it was time to do some upgrading! “Everything,” says Rick. “Cabinets, countertops, floors, paint, showers, front and back doors, lighting, ceiling fans, gutters, appliances, and even the door knobs. I had been wanting to do this for 10 or 15 years, and with the mortgage paid off it was the perfect time. I interviewed four or five general contractors for the job.” One of those interviews was with Teri Gilberg (better known as “The Re-Modelista”). “Teri wasn’t the cheapest bid, but she was in a reasonable ballpark. Plus, I really liked her and felt she could add a personal touch.” Rick’s premonition about Teri’s personal touch was spot-on. “Teri accompanied me to Floor & Decor to pick out my flooring, the kitchen backsplash and marble for the showers. We also went together to pick granite for my countertops. I wanted a cherry color for my cabinets, but Teri thought it wouldn’t work with the other finishes, and convinced me a mahogany color would look better. She was right. For the paint color throughout the house, I had done my homework and I knew shades of gray or beige were in. We tried lots of colors, and finally decided on ‘Marshmallow.’” As estimated, the remodel at Rick’s home took five weeks. “I planned an 11-day Hawaiian vacation a couple weeks in. I wanted to be out of their way, and Teri took care of things. Her crews worked hard, six days a week and I believe some Sundays while I was gone. I appreciated that she didn’t have five or six jobs going at the same time. Her crew was at my house every day. She even took care of

my dog. Her crew built a dog run for him to stay in the backyard while they were working in the house. He’s a lab and he likes to jump fences, so it was perfect. Teri brought my dog big bones and other treats. She really cared about him.” “I like my finished product a lot. I love that every evening when I get home, I don’t see all the things that need fixing, things I need to take care of. Everything is new! And while I don’t plan to sell anytime soon, I like that my house is ready for the market should something happen or should I change my mind.” “Teri is fun to deal with,” adds Rick. “She really cares about you as a client, and she has a great crew working with her. They really strive to do a good job. I love my ‘new’ house. I would recommend her to others looking to do a complete home remodel.”

High Quality and Professional Pool Renovations

W

by Marie Page

hen a local couple was ready to renovate their pool and add an outdoor kitchen, they turned to friends for recommendations. “We interviewed several companies, and after checking some references and going to see the remodel of one of the pools, we decided on working with Bratton Pools. The owner Mike Bratton was knowledgeable, technical and had an engineering background which we thought was very important in our renovation project. We felt a certain comfort level with Mike. We knew with a renovation that issues would come up, and just felt Mike was also better poised to handle these issues.” To aid in design, the couple talked at length with both Mike and Bratton Pool’s Certified Pool Designer, Maggie Castillo. “We were blown away by the 3D modeling. I had some ideas, my wife had some ideas, and Mike and Maggie had ideas. With the 3D modeling, we were able to see it all come together. Some of the design did change after the project started. This is where we need to give the Bratton employees and crew credit. They have a lot of experience, and creative ideas as well. We really appreciated their opinions on design.”

26 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2017

Ultimately the design included a travertine deck, pool coping, fire pit and waterfall bowls. Red brick coping and pea gravel were removed, the spa was opened up and other custom features were added. Bratton Pools installed all new equipment with automation, and put in the couple’s new outdoor kitchen. The renovation went mostly as planned, and was finished in the expected timeline. “The crews were on time and when need be, things were rescheduled. Rescheduling though was the exception, not the rule. As a contractor, Mike is very good to work with. If you call him, he always gets back with you. We were never chasing him down. He’s very professional that way.” The couple loves their new backyard. “We are excited that with the warmer weather we are really getting to enjoy what we’ve done. We definitely recommend Bratton Pools. They use unique, high quality materials and are very professional...exactly what we were looking for in our pool and backyard renovation project.” Bratton Pools ~ 281-988-7700 www.brattonpools.com

The Plumber Next Door by Marie Page

hen the plumber that lived down the street from Sarah Warburton moved, she turned to a big national company the next time she needed plumbing help. “I was so used to my neighbor just stopping by and fixing what needed to be fixed on his way home that I had no idea what I was in for,” says Sarah. “I felt like I was in a high pressure sales pitch and left with an inflated bill. Different guys were in and out of my house, and I had no idea what they were doing or if they were fixing anything!” Sarah had heard from several people that Alan’s Plumbing was different... more like a neighborhood plumber. Alan’s Plumbing is owned by master plumber Alan Burkhalter. His wife Jennifer handles the phones, and his brother Chris is also a master plumber. Alan’s sons Beau and Luke plus Jeff Johnson are all journeyman licensed plumbers. His son Jake along with Jaime and Trevor are apprentices on

Alan’s crew. Sarah’s first call to Alan’s was to replace all of the faucets in her home. “Jennifer answered the phone,” says Sarah. “She got me on the schedule and told me to go ahead and pick up the faucets I liked before the appointment. But when I got to Home Depot...I had no idea what I needed! I called Jennifer back, texted her some pictures from the store, and she was able to walk me through the process. She saved me from buying something that wouldn’t fit in my sink when the plumber arrived!” The plumber that visited Sarah was Alan and Jennifer’s son Beau. “He was so kind,” says Sarah. “Called me ma’am. He arrived at the quoted time and when he left everything was clean. I didn’t feel like I was being upsold and the price was fair. I also loved that it was the owner’s son...it didn’t feel like ‘just anyone’ was coming into my house. He had a vested interest in being polite and doing a good job...

after all, I did have his mom and boss’s phone number!” “I called Jennifer on another occasion when my dishwasher wasn’t working. I really had no idea if I had a plumbing issue or not when I called. Jennifer walked me through checking the dishwasher draining process, and was able to determine—over the phone—that it was not a plumbing issue and I wouldn’t need Alan’s Plumbing that day. And she also recommended a fabulous appliance repairman. I love that kind of honesty and integrity!” When you need a plumber, there’s no need to be bombarded with salesmen, upselling and inflated bills. Donald and Friends...

The Legacy Carries On by Amy Sharp

P

aul Price met the late Donald Leonetti in 8th grade. “We quickly became friends,” says Paul. “Then after college I was a food broker, which I hated!” In the meantime, Donald and his wife Jenni—recent Art Institute of Houston graduates—were making logos and brochures and ultimately t-shirts out of their home. Paul says, “Donald was ready to grow his The Leonetti Family in 2014 business and somehow I convinced him to let me help. I started making cold calls out of my home using the Yellow Pages.” Twenty years later, Paul remains the Business Manager for Leonetti Graphics. His responsibilities include a little bit of everything...meeting customers, plus he’s the IT guy, the tax guy and the human resources guy. “I love the small business, there’s nothing better. It’s flexible...we can get things done in a timely manner for our customers. And until Donald passed away...I got to work with my best friend.” Leonetti Graphics Production Manager Mike McKinney was also friends with Donald at Dulles High School. “We remained friends and our families did a lot together,” says Mike. “Donald was very good at anticipating the future needs of the company. He could see things quickly growing to the point that he would not be able to handle it all. I had production management experience earlier in my career so he knew I’d be a good fit to eventually run the t-shirt printing shop. We started

talking about it in 2008. By 2010 he was finally ready. I quit my job and came to work here. I’ve been here seven years, and what I appreciate the most is the family atmosphere.” Paul and Mike and the entire team at Leonetti Graphics carry on Donald’s commitment of service to our community. Donald’s legacy is further memorialized with the fall opening of FBISD school Donald Leonetti Elementary in Sienna Plantation. Paul says, “Honoring our friend with a school is exciting. As Mike said, Donald was a forward thinker. So it’s only fitting that Leonetti Elementary is one of the first schools in Texas to be funded by ‘green bonds,’ which means the school is designed with environmentallysustainable construction. Here’s to you my friend!” Leonetti Graphics 281-499-4959 3635 Glenn Lakes Lane Missouri City, TX 77459 www.leonettigraphics.com

Only the Best for Your Furry Friends

rett Birdsong has always been enthusiastic about the care and health of animals. “I had a dachshund as a kid and several labs,” says Brett. “I went to Texas Tech and earned my degree in Human Sciences. After graduation, I moved back to Houston and took a job distributing wine and beer, but I continued to be intrigued with the well-being and health of animals. In the back of my mind, I wanted to be an entrepreneur.” Then opportunity presented itself. A friend was building the retail center at Dulles and Lexington, and he reached out to Brett about opening a pet supply store in this location. “I was 23 years old and I thought, ‘Let’s do this.’ My only dependent was a chocolate lab, so I took a chance.” Twenty-two years later, family-owned and operated Pet Country still operates in that same location. “I believe in the mom-and-pop business model,” says Brett. “We help carry pet food to your car, and we know our customers by name. What makes me feel good is educating our customers about the health of their pets.

For example, we carry numerous grain-free, raw, and limited ingredient diet foods that have proven to combat allergies and a variety of health issues.” Pet Country is a retailer for family-owned and operated Fromm Pet Foods. Fromm manufactures an extensive line of top-shelf dry and canned canine and feline formulas. Pet Country carries a wide variety of premium pet foods, treats, and accessories. “If we don’t have

what you’re looking for, I can order almost anything and keep it in the back just for you,” says Brett. “We are a passion-driven business and our customers are never taken for granted. We go above and beyond to accommodate all requests.” In addition to pet food and supplies, Pet Country offers pet boarding 365 days a year and has an onsite groomer. “Jay has been my groomer for over eight years. He’s great with any breed of dog, and a perfectionist almost to a fault. We don’t have a revolving door of employees. Everyone—including Katy, Iridian and Caylii—is conscious and sensitive about what we do and enjoys coming to work everyday. CHIROPRACTIC AND SPORTS PERFORMANCE

F

by Amy Sharp

ort Bend County native Dr. Jose Simon pursued a soccer career at the University of New Mexico following his time at Strake Jesuit. A knee injury while playing at UNM changed his focus to his studies and lead to his return to Texas to study engineering at Baylor. “I interned at two companies,” says Dr. Simon. “But engineering was not for me.” One day, while listening to a local chiropractor give a report of findings to a patient..he heard a different approach to treating the body. “After my knee injury, I developed low back pain for no known reason and found no relief from the traditional medical approach. Dr. Felker explained how my old injury might have played a part in contributing to my low back pain. He was referencing the kinetic chain: how movement or lack of movement at one joint affects movement at another joint.” The kinetic chain was both simple in explanation and logical. “Given my sports background and injury, this made a lot of sense to me. Suddenly, I knew what I wanted to do and enrolled at Texas Chiropractic College and started working at Dr. Felker’s office, assisting in every way possible, including helping his Spanish speaking patients.” The biomechanics of the body captivated Dr. Simon because he saw an opportunity to utilize the approach to problem solving he learned as an engineering student with his understanding of the human body to relieve pain or improve athletic performance in a variety of individuals. Equipped with his clinical rotations thru Moody Health Center and invaluable business knowledge gained from Dr. Felker, Dr. Simon opened Simon Spine in 2012.

Now celebrating its five year anniversary, Simon Spine is different from your traditional chiropractic office. With sports playing a large part of his life, Dr. Simon saw a future in performance training. “We attack the mechanics with the goal of preventing injuries and optimizing function.” Dr. Simon was one of the first to become certified by the Titleist Performance Institute. “In this program, we utilize a physical screening process to measure your ability to generate and transfer speed, and determine the most efficient energy transfer throughout your body. We isolate any physical limitations, correlate these findings to your swing technique and prescribe a custom-conditioning program.” Track coaches from here to Beaumont consult Dr. Simon on their sprinters and jumpers. He’s the team doctor for a local cheerleading gym. Dr. Simon serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas Chiropractic Association, Texas Chiropractic College, and has served the local chapter of The Arthritis Foundation for the past five years. “People with arthritis come to me with severe inflammation. I give them alternatives, and a conservative approach to making their life easier.” Simon Spine sponsors local running club Fort Bend Fit. Never worry about getting an appointment at Simon Spine. “If you call us, we get you in and help you find relief the same day. From there we develop a tailored plan for your treatment.” Simon Spine sees both kids and adults, and takes appointments as late as 6pm.
