AMY BURRELL’S STORY
A LIFECHANGING
SECOND OPINION
Leaders in Breast Health

A Life - Changing Second Opinion
W
hen 37-year-old Amy Burrell felt a lump in her breast, she made an appointment with her hometown primary care physician. Amy says, “We rushed into a lumpectomy. Then at my follow up appointment, I was told the cancer was larger than they thought. That it was Stage 4, and I definitely
needed radiation and possibly chemo. I started to gather information, and I was not comfortable with any of the options presented to me. So I reached out to a friend who works at Houston Methodist West Hospital.” Even though Amy lives more than an hour away from Katy, her friend recommended she at least talk to Houston Methodist
West Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Warren A. Ellsworth IV before moving forward. Amy says, “I called Houston Methodist West, and they set me up with an appointment to see Dr. Ellsworth, plus Breast Surgical Oncologist Dr. Candy Arentz and Oncologist Dr. Alison Rome all on the same day!” That day, by reaching out for a second

State of the Art Care, Close to Home
A leader in the field, Houston Methodist West Hospital is equipped with the latest and most advanced technology and equipment available. Dr. Ellsworth says, “In addition to the CoC accreditation, we expect to obtain the breastspecific National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) next year. We will be identified as one of the few select hospitals providing full breast care, from diagnosis to treatment to survivorship. As Amy learned, we have options that are just not available everywhere, including opportunities to participate in research trials. You don’t even have to drive downtown for this state of the art care, and parking here at Houston Methodist West is always free!” Know Your Options

opinion, Amy’s life changed from doom and gloom to a light at the end of the tunnel. “Dr. Arentz told me my cancer was Stage 2B (not Stage 4!), and that we could probably take care of it with surgery. Dr. Rome let me know radiation and chemo were not necessary. Back home, I had been told I was too small for DIEP flap reconstruction (where fat, skin, and blood vessels are cut from the wall of the lower belly and moved up to the chest to rebuild the breast). Dr. Ellsworth assured me that not only was DIEP flap an option, but I also qualified for a research trial that reconnects nerves to possibly restore partial sensation in my breasts!”
“I’m telling my story because I don’t want another woman to not know all her options,” says Amy. “Today, I’m six weeks post surgery. I have no cancer. I have beautiful reconstructed breasts, and my only continued treatment is taking Tamoxifen. I absolutely recommend the team at Houston Methodist West. They are an amazing group of people, so compassionate and knowledgeable.”
The Team Approach
“Unfortunately, Amy’s initial experience is not uncommon,” says Dr. Arentz. “Many times, whatever doctor you see first is who goes in first. See the surgeon, and you have surgery. See the oncologist, and it’s chemo. That’s why here at Houston Methodist West, as a Commision on Cancer (CoC) compliant care center, we take a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer. With this team approach, we get together every week—the oncologist, breast radiologist, radiation oncologist, surgeon, plastic surgeon, oncology navigator—everyone we think we might need, and we discuss your case. It opens the doors to the possibilities in your treatment’s path, and we decide how to move forward and who goes first. Care plans change dramatically for the better with this approach, because everyone is on board with a cohesive plan...and our patients have better outcomes.”

Advocate, Educate and Support
From Diagnosis to Survivorship
Leticia Riley and Erica Esprit

T
he mission of the oncology nurse navigator program at Houston Methodist is to enhance care by providing a seamless navigation process from diagnosis to survivorship. This includes understanding the system, information about diagnosis and treatment, emotional support, logistics (like transportation and cost), advocacy and community resources. Here at Houston Methodist West, Erica Esprit is our oncology nurse navigator and Leticia Riley serves as our breast cancer navigator. Erica hails from a family of nurses. She has degrees in both sociology and nursing. She says, “I’ve always been a caregiver. So when this position became available, I immediately said, ‘You’re looking for me.’ My heart is full knowing that what we do here makes a difference. Of course that includes navigating the system, but identifying resources and support are our biggest duties. I recently had a patient stop working while she received chemotherapy. She seemed down, but assured me she was ok. I dug deeper and learned her son was
a senior in high school. Tearfully, she told me she couldn’t afford his prom or his cap and gown. I called the school principal, and secured both a cap and gown and a prom ticket. A local shop donated a tuxedo, and a local restaurant gave gift certificates for a pre-prom meal. We see a family in need and we try to help... and the Katy community is awesome and very giving!” Leticia has been a nurse for 30 years. She has a background in intensive care and the emergency department as well as working with patients with chronic bleeding disorders. “I applied to be the breast cancer nurse navigator because it gives me a chance to be diversified,” says Leticia. “I really get to know the families and patients. I had done something similar early in my career, as a nurse coordinator, and I am excited to get the opportunity and privilege to do it again. Encouragement is a major piece of this puzzle. Most patients haven’t been through this journey before, and we offer them encouragement and support that they can

get through this journey and that they have a great team on their side. We also try our best to assist our patients who are in need. I had a patient diagnosed with breast cancer in her 30s that needed a lot of resources. She had young children and family coming into town to stay with her to help her through this time. She didn’t have a place for them to sleep, so I found a local mattress manufacturer willing to donate mattresses. I also identified a local church willing to donate a week of summer camp for her kids so she could rest. Through encouragement, advocacy and education, we are empowering our patients one step at time. We are helping them to see they have strengths they didn’t even realize they had. They can do this.” Everyone’s road to recovery is different. At Houston Methodist West, Erica and Leticia are dedicated to guiding patients through that journey, from diagnosis to survivorship. Erica says, “We make a very difficult time a little easier for our patients.”

We Keep Your Feet
Warm!
Y
ou can smile now. It’s October in Texas! After summer’s brutal heat, what could be more welcome than a warm cable knit sweater and a pumpkin spiced latte? There’s something else to celebrate too: Switching from your air conditioner to your furnace. But is your house furnace-ready? “Folks can have a lot of misconceptions about what it takes to heat a house properly,” says Gerald Svetlik of True Fix A/C & Heating, Katy’s trusted Trane Comfort Specialist providing quality work right here in Katy for more than 42 years. As an expert in the field, Gerald has many years of ongoing training and acquired wisdom under his belt. “One of the most common misconceptions,” he says, “is closing off all your vents to control where your heat goes. But the truth is, your furnace distributes heat equally throughout your house no matter what. Closing those vents only makes your furnace work harder and wear out faster.” “Another popular misconception is that cold floors and cold feet are normal. It’s not! You don’t have to sacrifice comfort. Be sure to check the sealing around your doors and windows, or hire a trusted professional to seal them correctly for you. If not, you’re not only going to be uncomfortable, you’re literally letting money fly out the doors and windows.” A third misconception is that an efficient system is all you need. “Yes, it’s important that your furnace work efficiently and costeffectively,” says Gerald. “But it doesn’t mean anything if your home isn’t optimized for heating. An HVAC expert can inspect ductwork, fix leaks and make sure you and your family are fully protected from the cold.” Here’s another tip. “Don’t throw good money after bad,” says Gerald. “If your furnace is at the age where you’re having to repair it every season and it’s still not working right, it might be time to invest in a new one. Don’t keep patching it together. A system that’s outworn its welcome is not only a potential health hazard, it’s a drain on your wallet.” Last but not least, don’t put off regular maintenance. “I know it’s easy to put off scheduling someone to come out to your house, but we’re the guys who make sure you and your family are safe. We do a full and thorough inspection of your furnace—it’s way more than just a visual examination. We keep your unit running at peak efficiency and effectiveness.” Gerald and his family are longtime Katy residents. His wife Kim has been a Katy Realtor for many years. Daughters Kathleen and Meagan, and son-in-law Joe Kaupert are all graduates of Taylor High School. “We never lose sight of the fact that every person we help is our neighbor,” says Gerald. “We are grateful for your business and we are just as grateful that you are our friends and neighbors. Thank you all. We are Katy Proud!”

DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents
Stop Cavities Before They Start by Olivia Cane
Hauntingly Healthy Halloween Treats
T
here’s an upside and a downside to everything. Take Halloween. Upside? Adorable costumes, priceless photo ops...you pretending to send your kids out for candy and then eating half that candy yourself. But the downside is that your own precious little sugar monsters are going to be gobbling handfuls of sweets this Halloween, and we know what kind of havoc that wreaks on their teeth. Is there anything a parent can do (besides eating all that candy themselves, of course!) that can help prevent cavities in the first place? The answer is YES. And nobody knows more about kids’ teeth than pediatric dentist Dr. Faisal M. Khan at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental. Not only is Dr. Khan one of the few Board Certified Pediatric Dentists/Diplomats of Pediatric Dentistry, he’s got three little sugar monsters of his own. “That’s why I strongly recommend dental sealants,” says Dr. Khan. “They’re great at protecting teeth through the cavity-prone years of ages 6-14.”
“Dental (or fissure) sealants fill in the natural pits and fissures in the back teeth where tooth decay happens most frequently,” continues Dr. Khan. “And the process of putting on a dental sealant is simple. We ‘paint’ each tooth with a special liquid coating and then ‘cure’ the paint with light until it’s hard. That’s why dental sealants are ideal for kids. There are no drills or scary-sounding tools used. In fact, you can laugh and get your teeth sealed—and here at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental we always go out of our way to make our patients laugh!” The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children get dental sealants as soon as their permanent molars erupt. Schedule an appointment for your child today and have a Happy Halloween!

hen Claire Huebinger was ready to replace the carpet in three rooms of her home with tile, she visited two area flooring stores. One of those stores was locally owned Lone Star Floors. Claire says, “Both stores had good reviews, and the prices were comparable. The decision came down to personality. Matt was our salesperson at Lone Star Floors, and we really had a good general feeling about working with him.” Matt helped Claire and her husband narrow down their tile choices, and they ultimately selected a tile that looks like wood. “The installers that came to our house did a good job,” says Claire. “They were very kind and helpful, and they helped move our furniture to and fro. Each day before leaving they cleaned up their tools and materials. Walking across the finished floor now, it feels good. We have no issues!” Claire does now laugh about one small communication hiccup. She says, “They forgot to tell me that I would need to clean the floors with vinegar and water to remove the haze that starts to form after grouting. I saw the haze over the weekend, and got really anxious. I figured out the answer myself by Googling it, and I gave Matt a hard time about it after the fact...and we laughed about it. It’s all part of his personality that I liked from the beginning. I do recommend Lone Star Floors to others looking to replace their flooring.”

That’s A LOT of
Corvettes! by Amy Sharp
W
ith all seven (about to be eight!) generations of Corvettes represented among its active members, the Corvette Owners Club of Houston has been in existence for 18 years. This 501(c)(3) organization follows the National Corvette Club bylaws and rules, and they participate in the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. Our local club has one full-fledged GM sponsor: Classic Chevy Sugar Land. “We do lots of projects together,” says club President Bill Hoffman. “And Classic Chevy Sugar Land graciously allows us to hold our regular meetings in their conference room.” The club’s two largest events—the “Serious Wheels” open car show in the fall and the “Corvettes Ready” car show in the spring—raise money for local charities. The Corvette Owners Club of Houston is also the host and founder of Vettes for Vets, an annual event that has no money involved. Its sole mission is to provide a great experience for veterans. Vettes for Vets is the culmination of an idea hatched by Bill himself. He wanted to get a group of veterans together and take them for a Corvette ride experience. Bill says, “At our first event in 2016, 93 veterans rode in 93 Corvettes from Sugar Land, down Highway 6, to the MSR Houston
track in Angleton. For the veterans that required caregivers, Classic Chevy Sugar Land provided vans to follow our Corvette caravan. After about a half hour on the track, lunch was provided by Joe’s BBQ of Alvin. Then our caravan headed back to Sugar Land.” Today, the club has three Vettes for Vets events under its belt. The best part? “The conversations that take place on the trip between Sugar Land and Angleton,” says Bill. “About 95% of the veterans had never been in a Corvette, and 98% had never seen how one of these cars handles on the track. One individual had not left his home in seven years, and another had not eaten BBQ in 10 years. It’s an event our members talk about until the next one rolls around!” Classic Chevy Sugar Land owner Jeff Sebastian says, “We are proud to sponsor the Corvette Owners Club of Houston and all that they do for our community and our veterans. As part of our partnership, starting October 6th we are displaying a Gold Standard caliber Corvette in our showroom every month. Gold Standard means the car has been preserved or restored to within 98 to 100% of the standard for the day the car rolled off the assembly line. It’s fun to see some of these old Vettes look like new 40, 50 and almost 60 years later!”

Director of Specialized Services Kate Johnson-Patagoc says, “We are continuously striving to meet the needs of our families. The Social Connections Club grew out of what was probably the most requested service from our parents of individuals with a diagnosis of autism and other related conditions. These parents are pushing for their kids to graduate and contribute to society...but many are struggling to keep jobs due to social deficiencies. The Social Connections Club is the first step in helping with these soft skills.” This private pay group is led by Board Certified and Licensed Behavior Analysts Dave Whitcher and Brandt Kail. What do they do? “Lots of things!” says Kate. “Last week the club did a skit that taught our members how to handle a situation when someone is being rude. Dave and Brandt are amazing, and they tailor the club to the needs of its members.” And when Kate says this club is merely a first step...it’s true! id you miss your last eye exam because you no longer have vision insurance? If you did, know that you’re not alone. Dr. Ali Mostaghimi at Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch says, “The number of people without vision insurance is rising. You shouldn’t have to compromise your eye care and health just because you don’t have insurance. Annual eye exams are critical to preserving your vision and eye health. That is why we now offer a concierge or membership service for eye care here at Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch.” Concierge Eye Care - How Does It Work?
As a member, you (or your family) pay a one time yearly flat fee for eye care. This flat fee can also be spread out into monthly payments. • Your membership includes one annual eye exam for every family member on the plan including imaging of the retina. • Concierge membership gives your family exclusive discounts on materials, including select glasses and contact lenses. • Up to three visits per member are also included with membership, making surprise visits for infections or injuries easily manageable. • Best of all, concierge membership includes direct and personal access to the Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch office 24/7.

Dr. Mostaghimi says, “The concierge service is a great option for those that do not have vision insurance. However—with the rising cost of insurance and the continuing decrease in what it actually covers—I would encourage even those with insurance options to check out the concierge service. It’s possible that the cost to you is comparable or less than what you currently pay in insurance premiums. With this service, you would have the flexibility to select the eye care that is best for your family without being held hostage to the insurance companies!” The team of doctors at Today’s Vision Cinco Ranch, including Dr. Mostaghimi and Dr. Shelby Gross, care for people of all ages. It’s a practice dedicated to staying up to date with the most cutting-edge technology available in eye care. “Dr. Gross and I genuinely care about you and your family’s vision needs. Smiling Again HEALTH

ust when things should have been looking up, Janeth Montalvo’s back was causing her so much pain she could barely walk. Finally able to return to her house a year after Hurricane Harvey forced her out, the stress of this past year’s difficulties found its own home in Janeth’s neck and lower back. She says, “My pain was difficult to bear. Everything became a challenge. I missed my daughter’s performance with the Houston Youth Symphony. I couldn’t walk the family dogs, and during that time, I even think I forgot how to smile.” Convinced she needed back surgery, Janeth consulted an orthopedic spine specialist. He recommended lidocaine ointment and hydrocodone before considering surgery. The drugs worked initially, but she didn’t like the idea of relying on them and she found that the longer she took them, the less effective they became. Still in pain and feeling like she was back to square one, Janeth read an article about Dr. John Boren of Energee Spine Care in Katy and made an appointment immediately. Energee Spine Care is recognized as a leader in non-surgical restorative treatment of underlying bio-mechanical issues. They treat osteoarthritis, herniated and bulging discs, chronic neck and back pain, migraines,

peripheral neuropathy and so much more. Credited as the Father of Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression, Dr. John Boren invented and patented the Lordex® Decompression System. The Lordex® technology offers patients an effective and affordable alternative solution for pain relief and strength restoration. Many of the negatives found in long term drug use or surgery can be avoided by introducing a wellness plan of muscle specific exercise and unloading the spine. In the past 30 years Dr. Boren has helped thousands of his clients transform their lives and eliminate pain without drugs or surgical intervention.
By the time Janeth entered the Energee Spine Care offices she could barely walk and her pain level was off the chart. She says, “The staff is very caring, they make you feel important. Dr. Boren is compassionate and professional. He took his time and didn’t rush me. He said, ‘You are compressed. We need to decompress your spine so your body can heal itself.’ Working with the Energee Spine Care team is amazing; I haven’t taken any medicine since I started with Dr. Boren. My posture is improving and I feel better every day. When I returned to school my co-workers even noticed a difference in how I carry myself. I work with children and move a lot throughout the day. Dr. Boren gave me the confidence that I would be able to continue teaching. Dr. Boren gave me hope…he gave me my smile back.” Energee Spine Care 281-347-1515 21820 Kingsland Blvd, Suite 101B Katy, TX 77450 www.energeespinecare.com

“I CAN NOW DO EVERYTHING I COULD DO BEFORE CANCER.”
B
by Amy Sharp
efore retired school teacher Andrea Keith had breast cancer, she was a steady size 4 to 6. “Chemo and all the steroids really threw me for a loop!” says Andrea. “And after a lumpectomy and the removal of lymph nodes, I had to be careful. I was two years cancer free with no side effects or signs of lymphedema when I got a timely email from the parents of a former student. It was time to get back in shape.” Veronica and Mark Malhiot own local digital gym, Koko FitClub. “Veronica was a room mom in my classroom and Mark taught Junior Achievement back when their daughter was in 2nd grade. They offered to let me try Koko’s Breast Cancer Recovery Healthtrack program for three months to help me get back on track. That was in June, and I’m still going!” This 30 minute program is designed to help breast cancer survivors reclaim their strength and rebuild a stronger, more powerful body. Just like all Koko Healthtracks, it’s based on the latest research, with workouts that are individualized to a person’s specific needs and goals. And it’s simple. You come in, plug your Koko key into any Koko Smartrainer, and you are guided through your program for that day. “It’s more personal than a regular gym,” says Andrea. “It’s a small and comfortable environment. I go three days a week, and I like that my key tells me exactly what to do. I don’t have to remember anything or write anything down. A personal (human) trainer is optional, but I always schedule an appointment with one so that I feel I have to go!” Andrea cannot wait for her follow up with her doctor this month. “He will be happy...I’ve lost 20 pounds. Before Koko, I was also experiencing severe joint pain. Today, thanks to working out and a clean juice diet, I’m off all pain meds. I can now do everything I could do before cancer. I also want to send a
huge shoutout to my husband Brad and my son Matthew. I would not have made it through this without them. They were there for me every day. It’s all about attitude too, and going on with normal life. Together we wouldn’t let cancer win.”

Reliable. Consistent. Professional. by Amy Sharp
Jodi Gauthier, founder of ThisIsLivin Properties, has been
in the real estate business for almost 20 years. Ten years ago, a fellow agent referred Jodi to Henry Viesca for roofing needs. Henry is the owner of local ProRoofs Restoration. “I used Henry way back then,” says Jodi. “And I was happy with the work. I’ve continued a business relationship with him ever since. He has done work on my personal residence, and I’ve recommended him to my ThisIsLivin clients.” At ThisIsLivin Properties, Jodi understands that buying or selling a home is more than just a transaction: It’s a life-changing Henry Viesca experience. She says, “That’s why we always work relentlessly on your behalf to help you achieve your real estate goals.” As you might expect, Jodi has worked with lots of different contractors over the years. “I’m sure most of you realize that the contractor business has a lot of inconsistency in both quality and pricing. All too often, prices go up after the work is done. I have found working with Henry and ProRoofs Restoration to be the opposite...and that is refreshing! Henry is very consistent with pricing, he is very professional and he gets the job BEFORE done quickly. Plus his crews clean up after they are done, which is huge if you’ve ever had a roof done!” Roofs have been Henry’s specialty for more than ten years now. Henry says, “The secret is you need someone who cares to inspect your roof for problems, and the only way to tell what’s going on with your roof is to physically get on your roof and walk it. Every member of our team has been trained and educated to diagnose, repair, and AFTER replace your home’s roof.”
At the request of many ProRoofs Restoration clients, last year Henry expanded his business to additional areas of home improvement, including floors, siding, gutters, fences, windows, doors, patios, and painting inside and out. Insured and bonded, today ProRoofs Restoration has the training and manpower to take care of all your house repairs and renovations. Most recently, Jodi had ProRoofs Restoration renovate a flip house for her in Nottingham Country. “They did the entire exterior— roofing, exterior siding, fascia boards and gutters. ProRoofs Restoration and Henry provide a good service that’s hard to find. They’re reliable, consistent and professional. You can check off all the boxes. As a real estate agent, ProRoofs Restoration is at the top of my preferred vendor list and I absolutely recommend them...which is not something I do very often!” ProRoofs Restoration 281-994-9244 www.proroofsrestoration.com

t Medical Clinic at the Ranch, Vijaya Dwibhashi, MD and Madhavi Prasad, MD have created a primary care practice that offers services covering a broad spectrum of conditions from head to toe—from the simple to the complex—including women’s health. “I live in the area and Dr. Prasad grew up here,” says Dr. Dwibhashi. “In addition to good medical care, it’s important that our patients feel connected to us...that we are approachable. We empower our patients by involving them heavily in their own care. Through our patient portal, patients can view lab results, refill medications, and direct message myself and Dr. Prasad in a secure and private manner. We further educate and empower using educational videos, medical nutrition therapy, diabetes self-management education, and many trusted resources linked conveniently through our website.” Medical Clinic at the Ranch understands your time is precious. They believe you should spend less time in the waiting room and more time with the doctor. It’s also why this clinic takes an innovative time-saving approach by offering in-house labs, point of care testing, EKG, language interpretation services, and early and late appointments. If you need to go to the hospital, these doctors are there for you. “Both Dr. Dwibhashi and I work in hospitals as well,” says Dr. Prasad. “And we feel it is important that when our patients are admitted,
