alerie Dorsey never dreamed that her annual well-woman appointment would be the start of a tough two-year battle with breast cancer.

and she understands what you are going through. She gave me hope and reassured me that my treatment plan was best for my particular situation.”

When she saw her OBGYN in December 2016, the now 39-year-old was happy and seemingly healthy. However, that exam revealed a lump in her breast, and Dorsey was suddenly faced with an uncertain future filled with doctors visits and medical treatments.

Templeton immediately began the process of linking Dorsey to the hospital’s experienced team of breast cancer specialists – all conveniently located on the Houston Methodist Sugar Land campus. The multidisciplinary cancer team developed a personalized plan of care to provide Dorsey optimal clinical and cosmetic outcomes.

It was a fight that she would not face alone. In her corner, she had her husband, her three children – and the exceptional, compassionate breast cancer specialists at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, where technology is combined with the art of caring to make a life-saving difference for patients. “When you have cancer, you have all these emotions and you need all kinds of support,” Dorsey said. “I was fortunate to have a great team on my side – my family and my doctors.”

Diagnosis spurs quick action After finding the lump, Dorsey’s physician referred her to board-certified surgeon Sandra Templeton, M.D., of Houston Methodist Breast Surgery Partners, who performed the biopsy that confirmed her cancer diagnosis. “From the beginning, Dr. Templeton made me feel so comfortable,” said Dorsey. “She is so patient and compassionate,

“When you have cancer, you have all these emotions and you need all kinds of support. I was fortunate to have a great team on my side – my family and my doctors.” — Valerie Dorsey. In January 2017, Dorsey began chemotherapy with boardcertified oncologist Jorge Darcourt, M.D., of Houston Methodist Oncology Partners, with the goal of shrinking her tumor prior to surgery. In June of that year, she underwent a lumpectomy, performed by Templeton, and two months later, she began radiation therapy with board-certified radiation oncologist Clive Shkedy, M.D., at Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land.

Don’t delay. Schedule your mammogram today! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a great time for reminding all women 40 and over, or sooner if they have a family history, to get an annual mammogram. Physician order is not required for a screening mammogram. To schedule yours online, visit houstonmethodist.org/imaging or call 281.242.PINK (7465).

Her radiation treatments were completed in October. She then received hormonal therapy before having a mastectomy with reconstructive surgery performed in June 2018 by Templeton and Pierre Chevray, M.D., Ph.D., board-certified plastic surgeon with Houston Methodist Institute for Reconstructive Surgery.

Collaboration for best outcomes That collaborative approach among the members of the hospital’s knowledgeable breast cancer care team is vitally important. Team members share information and ideas throughout each patient’s course of treatment, ensuring that a personalized plan of care is created and followed to provide the best possible outcome. With easy access to test results and treatment updates via the hospitals’ innovative MyChart electronic medical record system, the care team – and patients themselves – can easily see how the plan is progressing. The physicians get together periodically to make adjustments if needed and ensure that each patient is being cared for in the best possible manner. Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land provides ongoing support, including an oncology nurse navigator who is available to help facilitate appointment scheduling, serve as an information resource and connect patients to a variety of services, when needed. In addition to a coordinated approach, Houston Methodist Sugar Land provides the complete range of breast care and breast cancer services and procedures in one convenient location. That makes a significant difference for patients like Dorsey, who require numerous visits throughout their care. “The experience I had at Houston Methodist Sugar Land is beyond description,” Dorsey said. “I was constantly amazed that my doctors treated me like I was a member of their own family. The staff at the hospital became friends; they were so caring and devoted to my treatment.”

The importance of regular mammograms

regular checkups, self-exams and annual mammograms. Houston Methodist Sugar Land patients have access to the latest and most sophisticated imaging technology available today. Since 2015, for example, the hospital has offered low-dose radiation tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography. This advanced form of screening improves the ability of physicians to detect breast cancer in dense breast tissue at its earliest stages, while using the lowest radiation exposure available.

“The experience I had at Houston Methodist Sugar Land is beyond description. I was constantly amazed that my doctors treated me like I was a member of their own family. The staff at the hospital became friends; they were so caring and devoted to my treatment.” — Valerie Dorsey. “3-D mammograms provide clearer images and a more accurate screening than traditional mammograms, especially in women with dense breast tissue,” said Templeton. “That’s a crucial factor in identifying small, invasive cancers early, which improves patient outcomes.” The hospital’s 3-D mammogram requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a traditional 2-D mammogram.

Great care leads to a bright future Today, Dorsey is cancer-free and grateful for the care she received. “When I was going through my treatment, people always asked me, ‘How can you still be smiling?’” she recalls. “And I would answer, ‘Because I have faith in God and my own team of great doctors.’ I recommend Houston Methodist Sugar Land to anyone who is fighting cancer.”

AWalk to Remember by Sara Adams

ohn and Leigh March have been married for thirty-nine years. They have two grown sons and have enjoyed an interesting and well-traveled life together. Growing up, John participated in every kind of sport and suffered some injuries along the way. He had to have six knee surgeries, and by 2010 he had to have a knee replacement. It was his orthopedic surgeon who suggested the multiple knee surgeries could be a contributing factor to John’s bulging varicose veins and recommended he see a specialist. Leigh went with John on his initial visit to see Dr. Baltazar. They both felt comfortable with Dr. Baltazar as soon as they walked through his door. They appreciated his thorough examination and unhurried style. After sharing the ultrasound results, Dr. Baltazar said, “I think I can improve your life.” John and Leigh trusted Dr. Baltazar right away, they agreed with his recommendation and John scheduled his first procedure the following week. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader his field. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. John was able to have all treatments done in office. He says, “The pain was minimal and the recovery time was quick. My legs felt lighter and I was surprised to notice that my legs didn’t seem so restless.” John and Leigh were so pleased with his progress that they moved forward with their plans to hike the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage Trail in northern Spain. If you’re not familiar with the Camino de Santiago, it’s a passageway that has been used by travelers and seekers for more than 2,000 years. Originally traveled by St. James and later the Knights Templar, some of the roads originally laid down by Romans are still in place today. Following Dr. Baltazar’s recommendations for wearing compression stockings and precautions to take during long flights, John and Leigh felt confident in moving forward with their plans. Seeing Dr. Baltazar was a major step in keeping John on the path of an active lifestyle. Only six weeks following his surgery, John and Leigh hiked the Camino, completing almost 80 miles in nine days.

Joining a practice like Vargas Foot and Ankle Specialists is a dream come true for Dr. Hurwitz. “Dr. Vargas’s vision on how to treat patients is in line with mine. The advanced imaging and diagnostic equipment that Dr. Arnold’s office uses makes your visit relaxing and assures that the best tools are being used to examine and treat your eyes. When we have questions, they are answered thoroughly, and the results of exams are explained as in-depth as you wish them to be. Snowdrop Foundation provides scholarships for college bound pediatric cancer patients and childhood cancer survivors while raising awareness and funding for continued research to cure childhood cancer. The foundation was founded in honor of Chelsey Campbell, a teenage cancer fighter Kevin met one winter while broadcasting live from Texas Children’s Cancer Center. As doctors referred to Chelsey’s 27 hour surgery as a “marathon,” Kevin decided to run his first marathon in her honor. Chelsey passed away about a month before Kevin ran that first marathon, but her legacy lives on with Snowdrop Foundation, its runners in races around the world, and the 55 hour Snowdrop ultra marathon hosted right here in Fort Bend County every winter. Since 2006, Snowdrop Foundation has grown to over 1000 supporting runners and donated over $2.5 million to scholarships and research. For more information, visit www. snowdropfoundation.org. hen Jenny Purvis moved here four years ago, she turned to her brother and sister-in-law for a house cleaning recommendation. Jenny says, “They had lived in this same neighborhood for awhile, and they recommended Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services.” Four years later, and Mahoney’s is still cleaning Jenny’s house every other week. “They do a good job cleaning, and that is important of course,” says Jenny. “But I also like that they are reliable. The team always shows up when they say they will. And they are extremely flexible. If I decide a different day will work better than what we have scheduled, I can easily call or text last minute if I have to, and they work with me. I also like that I know I can trust them in my house

when I am not there. I leave a key and they get the job done.” Owned by Imelda Mahoney and her daughter Casandra, Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services has been cleaning homes all over Fort Bend County for more than 10 years. Many of the “extras” that some companies charge more for are part of their basic service, including blinds, baseboards and ceiling fans. Need extra? Just ask! Jenny says, “Now and again, I ask them to clean the inside of my fridge, stove and oven. I also frequently request extra cleanings during the holidays, especially if I’m having a big party or just have lots of people coming over. And while my typical cleanings only include the downstairs—where we live—I do occasionally ask them to clean the upstairs too.”

Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services is fully bonded and insured. They provide all cleaning supplies and equipment, and can do a one time deep clean or work on a schedule of your choosing. “Reliable and flexible...I absolutely recommend Mahoney’s to others!” says Jenny.

ocal real estate agent Mary Lewis has used Alan’s Plumbing off and on for years. “I use them whenever I need a plumber,” says Mary. “I found Alan’s Plumbing years ago in a local magazine. I remember thinking, ‘Cool! A local company!’ I like small, nonfranchised companies.” And Mary found the best. Alan’s Plumbing is a local, family-owned business. Patriarch Alan Burkhalter is a master licensed plumber. So are his brother Chris and his son Luke. His son Beau holds a journeyman license, and his son Jake is a plumbing apprentice. Employees Jaime and Trevor are also apprentices, and longtime employee Jeff Johnson is journeyman licensed as well. Alan’s wife Jennifer answers the phone when you call. Mary says, “Eight or nine years ago, sometimes it was Alan’s mother (the boys’ grandmother!) that answered my calls. I love that the business is family run. When you work with Alan’s, they tell you upfront they may not be the cheapest in town. They are very honest. But they also stand behind their price and their work. I’ve

never had an issue, and I always feel comfortable the work will be done correctly and in a timely and professional manner.” Most recently, Mary called Alan’s Plumbing about a leaking pipe. “We bought a fixer-upper, and we found the leaking pipe over a weekend. My husband is pretty handy, and he was able to temporarily stop the leak. We called Alan’s, and Luke went over with my husband what he did to make sure it would hold. All were in agree-

ment that the repair could wait until Monday. But even so, Luke apologized for not coming out over the weekend. You can tell Alan’s boys were raised well. They are all professional and polite, saying, ‘Yes ma’am’ and ‘No ma’am.’ Luke was at our house Monday morning when he said he would be there -7:30am. He fixed our issue quickly and at a good price. And I love that he texted me when he was on his way.” As a real estate agent, Mary keeps Alan’s Plumbing at the top of her preferred plumber list. “I’m always happy to recommend great companies,” says Mary. “I know when Alan’s Plumbing goes into a client’s home, they will be careful, make no mess and take everything when they leave. The job will be done correctly and I don’t have to worry...and they are always nice and polite. It’s easy to recommend them!”

He would ride Champ to school in a one-room schoolhouse. One of 12 kids, Dad grew up in a poor family. When he was in high school, he would hitchhike to Kansas and Nebraska during the summer to help the farmers with their crops. Four years later, he took a job with National Cash Register. Brian says, “NCR transferred Dad to Kansas and then Muskogee. I loved Muskogee, we had cows and horses there. Then in 1977, NCR transferred our family to Sugar Land. hen Ivan and Barb Decker moved to this area back in 2015, Barb read about Miracle Method Surface Refinishing in UpClose magazine. “I had never heard of it before,” says Barb. “But I did not like the Corian kitchen counters in my house. They were shiny, too smooth, showed water spots and were hard to take care of. I knew I wanted to refinish, so I called Miracle Method Surface Refinishing to get more information and pricing.” Jonee and Paul Barnett have owned local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing for more than 15 years. Jonee says, “What many don’t realize is that just about ever y kitchen and bathroom surface can be refinished: countertops, showers, floors, tubs. Instead of the mess, expense and inconvenience of pulling out your old countertops (or shower or even your tub!), in less than a day or two you can have brand new resurfaced countertops...and no one can tell the difference!”

by Amy Sharp

Barb says, “It was Jonee that came to our house with samples and pictures. She knew everything about it, and was able to answer every question I had. I found her easy to work with and very professional. And I was surprised at the number of color options available! When they came out to do the work, the technicians were wonderful. The first day they prepared the surface, and then cleaned up everything before they left. The second day they finished the work...and again cleaned everything up. We’ve built houses in the past, and from my experience I expected a mess! Miracle Method Surface Refinishing was nothing like that. They left everything cleaner than before they got here. Very professional.” So impressed with their refinished kitchen countertops, this past January the Deckers called Miracle Method Surface Refinishing again to refinish the countertops in both bathrooms and the shower bottom in the master bathroom. “The bathroom countertops were marble,” says

Barb. “We had Miracle Method refinish them to match to the kitchen. We didn’t go with the same color, but a coordinating color. I just love how they came out! And even though the kitchen was done in 2015 and the bathrooms this year, you can’t tell one is older than the other.” Miracle Method Surface Refinishing has received the Angie’s List Super Service Award multiple times and is a BBB accredited business with an A+ rating. Barb says, “I have no problem recommending this company at all. I gave them a five star rating on Google...and I’d give more stars if possible. They are professional, knowledgeable, do great work and are reasonably priced. Both times we had them at our house we were very pleased with their work!” Miracle Method Surface Refinishing 281-240-2284 603 Murphy Road, Stafford, TX (call for hours) MiracleMethod.com/houstonsw

wo years ago, Seeju Dupre’s doctor, Dr. Shel, changed her hormone prescription from synthetic hormones to natural bioidentical hormones. Seeju says, “Dr. Shel recommended I go to Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, because they could mix my hormones by hand in the right dose for me. I had never been to a compounding pharmacy before. I’m not even sure I knew they existed! I kept picturing an old school little town pharmacist mixing ingredients in the back...a scoop of this, a scoop of that.” As it turns out, Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy is a modern day version of what Seeju imagined! Owner Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph says, “Medicine does not have to be one-size-fits-all. What we do here at Campbell’s is custom blend your medication so it’s exactly what you need in the amount you need it. For those who hate pills, we can turn your medication into a topical cream, a chewable, a liquid, or even a lollipop. We also stock all commercial brands.” And with the custom-mixed medicine “of old” comes the small town feel. Seeju says, “Campbell’s is a small store and it feels more like family. I hardly ever have to wait, and it’s more personable. When I come in they ask where I’m going for the holidays. Or ‘How are the kids?’. They also really understand what is prescribed for me and why. They ask how it’s working for me, and I love that I can have a conversation about my medication without a long line of waiting customers behind

me listening to that conversation.” “It’s not that I was displeased with my phamarcy before,” continues Seeju. “They were respectful, kind and patient. But at Campbell’s, it’s the people that make it. They remember my name and always call to follow up. That makes a big difference. My husband (Dr. Charles Dupre, FBISD Superintendent) has also started using Campbell’s and he loves them as well. They’re our family pharmacy, and probably know more about us than they ever needed or wanted to know! We 100% recommend them!” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 Houston • 713-668-4833 6603 Kirby Dr., Houston, TX 77005 www.campbellscompounding.com

Pediatric Sedation Dentistry... Oral Sedation can be used to reduce your child’s anxiety and/or discomfort during dental visits.

ccording to the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS Education), 30% of people avoid the dentist due to fear. Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS says, “I hear it from parents all the time. They had a traumatic experience as a child, and now ‘dental phobia’ prevents them from receiving necessary routine dental care as an adult. They’re still scared, 20 or 30 years later.” At Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Shilpa sees patients up to age 21. “The majority of my patients are under 12,” says Dr. Shilpa. “And it’s the little ones ages five and under that are most apprehensive when they require dental treatment. Many of these kids do not have the attention span to sit in the chair for a long time. Sedation dentistry extends the treatment time, and we can take care of most (and in many instances all!) issues in one sitting. The patient just watches TV during their procedure in a relaxed state, making the experience nice instead of traumatizing. Then the next time your child comes in for a regular checkup, it’s happy go lucky! We are building a good rapport with the dentist, so they are not scared at the following visit...or for the rest of their life!” Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry offers all types of sedation, including nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, IV sedation and general anesthesia.

“I CAN NOW DO EVERYTHING I COULD DO BEFORE CANCER.”

efore retired school teacher Andrea Keith had breast cancer, she was a steady size 4 to 6. “Chemo and all the steroids really threw me for a loop!” says Andrea. “And after a lumpectomy and the removal of lymph nodes, I had to be careful. I was two years cancer free with no side effects or signs of lymphedema when I got a timely email from the parents of a former student. It was time to get back in shape.” Veronica and Mark Malhiot own local digital gym, Koko FitClub. “Veronica was a room mom in my classroom and Mark taught Junior Achievement back when their daughter was in 2nd grade. They offered to let me try Koko’s Breast Cancer Recovery Healthtrack program for three months to help me get back on track. That was in June, and I’m still going!” This 30 minute program is designed to help breast cancer survivors reclaim their strength and rebuild a stronger, more powerful body. Just like all Koko Healthtracks, it’s based on the latest research, with workouts that are individualized to a person’s specific needs and goals. And it’s simple. You come in, plug your Koko key into any Koko Smartrainer, and you are guided through your program for that day. “It’s more personal than a regular gym,” says Andrea. “It’s a small and comfortable environment. I go three days a week, and I like that my key tells me exactly what to do. I don’t have to remember anything or write anything down. A personal (human) trainer is optional, but I always schedule an appointment with one so that I feel I have to go!” Andrea cannot wait for her follow up with her doctor this month. “He will be happy...I’ve lost 20 pounds. Before Koko, I was also experiencing severe joint pain. Today, thanks to working out and a clean juice diet, I’m off all pain meds. I can now do everything I could do before cancer. I also want to send a

huge shoutout to my husband Brad and my son Matthew. I would not have made it through this without them. They were there for me every day. It’s all about attitude too, and going on with normal life. Together we wouldn’t let cancer win.”

Don’t Be Afraid to Seal Out Cavities by Amy Sharp

alloween! For many kids, it’s an exciting night of costumes and lots of candy. But are you concerned about your little one’s teeth and the cavities they could be getting from all that

sugar? For nearly 30 years, Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. has been checking on the teeth of entire families...including the little people who are super excited about that overflowing bag of candy. Dr. Lomonte says, “Parents are right to be concerned, but it’s also important to know that cavities and decay don’t pop up after one Halloween’s worth of loot—they form over time, and many possible cavities can actually be avoided!” How? By protecting teeth with dental sealants. “We apply sealants to your child’s cavity-free teeth,” says Dr. Lomonte. “They are painted onto the exterior of the tooth to protect the tiny grooves and crannies from the bacteria and food particles that typically cause cavities to develop. A KW (Keller Williams) Southwest Experience

Kelly Murphy and Oscar Gutierrez’s Story

hen Kelly Murphy and Oscar Gutierrez learned their home would be zoned to a different high school, they started thinking about other options. Kelly says, “We were casually looking when we met KW (Keller Williams) Southwest agent Samantha Sheppard at an Open House. Samantha was very engaging and very memorable. She didn’t just sit in a corner and let us look around...and she didn’t hover and show us every closet either. I remembered thinking that if we put our house on the market, I wanted people at my Open Houses to like the experience as much as I liked that one.”

About six weeks later, Kelly and Oscar decided to bite the bullet. “We interviewed three real estate agents, including Samantha. Samantha was very well prepared. She was realistic on price and didn’t overpromise. She was also very methodical, which is my tendency as well. We chose her to sell our home and help us buy another one.” To prepare their old home for the market, Samantha went through and gave Kelly and Oscar suggestions. “Bless her,” says Kelly, “my husband is a ‘collector.’ You couldn’t even walk into the storage space above the garage. But we did it, and two weeks later Samantha was shocked at the progress we made. We put the house on the market and Samantha held Open Houses every other weekend. She negotiated five or six deals before we found ‘the one.’” To accommodate their family plus Oscar’s father and an au pair, Kelly and Oscar wanted five bedrooms and two good-sized living

areas in their new home. “That poor lady looked at a lot of houses with us and she was flexible. We put an offer on one...and with two days left in the option period, I just knew it wasn’t the house we were supposed to be in. Both boys are competitive gymnasts, and we needed to be closer to their gym. My husband thought I was crazy, but he knew...if momma’s not happy, no one is. But Samantha, she understood. She just said, ‘If it’s not your house, it’s not your house! Whatever is meant to be will work out.’ We actually went back to a home we had vetoed before that I couldn’t stop thinking about it. We negotiated a deal on it and got it! And to avoid a move in between, Samantha negotiated a lease back for us on our old home.” “We highly recommend Samantha,” continues Kelly. “She was selling another home at the same time, but we never felt on the back burner. She was always available to answer our texts. We really enjoyed working with her, and we love our new home and neighborhood. Our house is ten minutes from the boys’ gym... they can actually come home after school, do homework and rest before practice. They couldn’t do that before. It’s perfect!” KWSW can help find the perfect home for your family too. Give them a call today! KW Southwest ~ 281-265-0000 1650 Highway 6, Ste 350 • Sugar Land, TX 77478

rowing up in his dad’s barbershop, Mark Anthony never imagined to what extent this industry would move him to want to help change people’s lives. He says, “My dad had a strong work ethic and a passion for helping others. He’s my inspiration. What I love most about what I do is that I have the ability to help people feel good about themselves. I also find joy in training stylists who are new to this industry to love this craft as much as I do.” Together with his sister Eunice and husband Al, Mark opened Milagro Salons in 2004 with one employee: Tiffany Marroquin, who was a cosmetology student booking appointments using a cell phone and a notepad. Today she is Managing Director. The team has grown to 17 and counting. Eunice says, “The culture at Milagro is one we have worked very hard to create. We are one family. We love celebrating each other’s wins and successes. Our goal is to create a comfortable, relaxing and happy place for our team, where everyone stays inspired and excited to keep growing and evolving…and of course, that feeling naturally feeds over to our guests.” And the employees agree. Beatriz, an experienced Milagro hair artist, says, “This is the first place I’ve worked where they don’t just say we work as a team; we actually do. If we happen to get behind, everyone helps to get you caught up. Whether it’s mixing color or finishing a blowout, everyone’s willing to help. It’s a great environment!” As an AVEDA Educator-Purefessional, Mark is involved with teaching and educating other salon owners and stylists on the newest fashionforward hair trends and color techniques introduced by AVEDA each

season. A sneak peek—Mark says this season is all about warm tones, lots of waves and fun colors! Milagro artist Bria loves that Mark brings these collections back and teaches them to the Milagro team. “It’s one of my favorite perks!” she says. Interested in joining this nurturing team? Milagro’s Apprenticeship Program is designed for newly graduated cosmetology students and/ or experienced stylists new to Milagro. “Everything here is very well organized,” says Milagro artist Brianna. “They take care of everything. We get to show up and do what we enjoy!” This year Milagro Salons is celebrating their 14th anniversary! Mark has clients who have trusted their hair to him for more than 25 years. Team Milagro would like to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of their guests. Mark says, “We recognize that we owe our success to both our clients and our commitment to the quality of their Milagro experience. From the bottom of our hearts...thank you.”

ASK MARGIE

The Lawyer Who Cares

Don’t Leave It to Fate and the State by Amy Sharp

ebbie Marcell is a top producer at Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene. Her husband Marvin offers consulting services after more than forty years of leadership at two Fortune 500 companies. This power couple has four adult children and six grandkids, and they recently contacted Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly to update their wills and estate plan. “We’ve been friends with Margie for a long time,” says Marvin. “I am part of the Sugar Land Rotary Club, and this year Margie is our President. Debbie and I did have a will, but it needed to be updated...and a will is not something a computer should just generate for you. You need someone that can ask the right questions and guide you to the best solution for your individual circumstances. Margie does that flawlessly and skillfully.” “You read stories all the time about people who do not have a plan,” continues Debbie. “And the craziest things happen. Kids fight and get angry, and families break up when there is lack of clarity. Leaving it all to fate and the state seems selfish. It was not something Marvin and I wanted to do to our kids and grandkids.” Margie says, “Unfortunately, what Debbie alludes to is true. I’ve seen even the closest families enter into nasty battles over their parent’s assets. Even if you have a simple will in place, it doesn’t cover some of the complex issues your heirs might be facing, which is why I recommend an estate plan. An estate plan provides clarity about each heir to your estate. Plus, with a plan in place your heirs will likely pay substantially less in taxes, fees and court costs after you are gone.” The easiest way to get started is to make a list of your assets and their value—including assets, debts and life insurance—and contact a knowledgeable estate planning attorney to guide you through the estate planning process. Debbie says, “Marvin and I certainly recommend Margie. She is very professional—to the highest levels—and she is dead serious about the service she provides to her clients!” Margaret McCullough Connolly, PLLC

NEWER, BETTER OPTIONS FOR by Amy Sharp czema. It’s just something you deal with, right? Maybe with a little moisturizer? In honor of Eczema Awareness Month this October, Rosenberg Dermatology wants you to know there are newer options when it comes to keeping eczema in check. Certified Physician Assistant Celia Vaclavik says, “For mild to moderate eczema, Eucrisa is a great non-steroid topical option. It’s safer for kids, and has none of the steroid side effects like hyperpigmentation and thinning of the skin. And it can be used daily on all parts of the body, including the armpits.” For moderate to severe eczema or atopic dermatitis, Celia recommends considering a biologic: a treatment made from natural resources. She says, “Right now, Dupixent is the only biologic prescribed for eczema. It’s an injection you give yourself every two weeks. Since it has less side effects than the biologics of the past, it doesn’t require regular lab work. Here at Rosenberg Dermatology, we have seen severe cases of eczema clean up pretty well with Dupixent!” The important thing to remember about eczema is that it’s a chronic condition that can wax and wane. “But it’s not something you or your child just has to live with,” says Celia. “Eucrisa and Dupixent are the tip of the iceberg. Additional options are currently in clinical trials. You can absolutely get effective relief without steroids or its side effects.” A satellite location of Houston’s esteemed Heights Dermatology & Aesthetic Center, Rosenberg Dermatology’s extensive menu of

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

eth Rossi was no stranger to lower back and sciatic nerve pain. Earlier this year, as she was pulling on her pants, she felt an extremely sharp pain shoot straight down her leg. “The pain was so intense it stopped me in my tracks,” she says. “And I knew I had to do something about it.” Having worked in the healthcare field for over twenty-five years, Beth knew it was up to her to find the care that would best meet her needs. Watching her own mother’s journey of multiple back surgeries with no relief reinforced Beth’s determination that she had to do something different for herself. When Beth made her first appointment with Dr. Harris of Sugar Land Health Center she did not know what to expect, but she was sure about two things: “I do not want to have back surgery, and I can’t keep hobbling along.” Beth says, “The entire staff at Sugar Land Health Center was amazing. I felt comfortable as soon as I walked into the office. I could tell they really cared and I liked how thorough Dr. Harris was. He takes in consideration everything that is going on with the person, not just their back. He has a multi-faceted approach that considers your life inside and outside his office.” Dr. Steve Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982, and has been in practice for over 40 years. Known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers gentle chiropractic care, pain relief, spinal disc decompression, rehabilitation, and so much more. Over the course of her treatments with Dr. Harris, Beth found more than relief; she may have even found inspiration. Looking for a way to share the knowledge she had gained working in healthcare for the past 25 years, Beth began training to become a Health and Wellness Coach. She sees it as a natural outgrowth of her time working with Dr. Harris. “Things I tried in the past didn’t seem to work. After being treated by Dr. Harris, I don’t have any of the pain I used to have,” says Beth. “I will definitely continue to see Dr. Harris. I feel like the work we have done together is actually preventing problems from happening in the future.”
