magine being able to create an artificial heart on a 3-D printer using synthetic heart tissue. The procedure is a reality in Don Johnston’s book, The Dar Lumbre Chronicles. In this science-fiction novel set in the near future, the synthetic material, DL-666, created by Dr. Dar Lumbre is being used to create hearts and has saved many lives over the years. Almost fifty years after the doctor’s disappearance, the synthetic material begins to deteriorate. Geneticists Crane Hopkins and Annie Lee launch a frantic search for compatible DNA to make the needed repairs. Many people, including the First Lady of the United States, are awaiting heart transplants which cannot be performed with the malfunctioning tissue. Unfortunately when Dr. Lumbre disappeared, so did the records of his original work. Hopkins and Lee fight to stay focused through government interference, the rumored return of the mysterious Dr. Lumbre, and an unforgiving clock. Set in Houston and the surrounding areas of

by Sara Adams Richmond and Rosenberg, locals will enjoy the familiar setting in a believable future created by Don Johnston. Those not from the area will still find this book to be, as one reviewer said, “A little bit eerie, a little mysterious, with great characters, and a fast-paced plot…”
About the Author Don Johnston is eighty-two years old. He was “bitten” by the science bug when he was five. He found an old science book with several torn pages; when he turned to the first full page it had a picture of a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis and he knew instantly that science had a lot to offer. After graduating from high school, Don joined the Air Force and served as a jungle survival instructor in Panama for three years. During his service in Panama, the editor of the base newspaper asked him to write a weekly column. That’s where Don discovered he had a real knack for storytelling. When he was discharged from the Air Force,

Don returned to east Texas where he earned a degree in chemistry and biology from Stephen F. Austin University and married his local sweetheart. After graduation, Don and his family moved to the Houston area where he worked as a chemist for fifteen years before starting his own business. He says, “During the early years of my career, I wrote numerous technical articles and I have been published in professional magazines and books. Upon retirement, I began writing science fiction, the genre I love.” In the second chapter of his own life, Don Johnston has just published The Dar Lumbre Chronicles and is working on another science fiction novel: Mirror Images. You can find The Dar Lumbre Chronicles at Blue Willow Bookshop in Houston or order online. Don will discuss and sign copies of his book at Blue Willow Bookshop on Saturday, May 4th at 3:00 pm. 832-392-4221 thedarlumbresociety.com

hen you have an ache or a pain...it’s difficult to know where to turn. Getting the right help at the right time can sometimes seem like you’re on a rabbit trail instead of a direct path for a solution to your problem. When Linda Miller first noticed her feet swelling and weakness in her legs, she consulted a couple of doctors without much help. One doctor even suggested she might need to get used to walking with a cane. Not one to take bad news sitting down, Linda continued her journey to wellness by seeing two more doctors. Along the way, she discovered it was the condition of the veins in her legs that was causing the swelling and weakness she was experiencing. When Linda told a friend at work about her latest discovery, her co-worker knew just who to recommend. “She told me ‘You have to see Dr. Baltazar!’” says Linda. “My friend’s friend had been seeing him for ten years and she just loved him.” At her appointment with Dr. Baltazar, Linda was comfortable the moment she met him and felt an immediate rapport. She knew she had finally arrived when Dr. Baltazar told her, “I won’t do anything if it’s not going to help you.” Linda’s confidence was further bolstered by a side-comment she overheard while getting her ultrasound. The healthcare worker said, “If I ever have vein disease, Dr. Baltazar is the doctor I would see.”
After working with Dr. Baltazar, Linda no longer has any weakness in her legs and her swelling has been reduced by 85-90%. Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Linda took that first step and kept walking until she got the care she needed and deserved. Linda says, “It was a long road that led me to Dr. Baltazar, but once I got there the office staff was as nice as they could be. When I talked with Dr. Baltazar, he listened to my symptoms and never rushed me. If he didn’t understand me, he asked questions to clarify what I was saying. And with his treatment...I don’t need a cane! Both my husband and I really like him and recommend him.” Certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar has been diagnosing and treating venous diseases for more than ten years. If you or someone you know is experiencing problems with venous insufficiency, take that first step and call Dr. Baltazar today.

welve-year-old Jashaun Brooks started wearing glasses when he was five or six years old. His mother, Jashona Mitchell, says, “Back then, his teacher alerted me that he might be having trouble with his vision. I took him to see my optometrist, Dr. Jocelyn S. Horiszny at Today’s Vision Sugar Land. We learned that like me, Jashaun is nearsighted.” Jashaun plays basketball year round. His glasses were always in the way. “He would sweat and they would slip down his nose,” says Jashona. “And the earpiece affected his peripheral vision. He didn’t have full sight of the court and ball.” A year ago, Jashona discussed these issues Dr. Horiszny. At that appointment, another issue surfaced. Jashaun’s nearsightedness
by Amy Sharp
was becoming worse. Dr. Horiszny recommended orthokeratology, also known as OrthoK, corneal reshaping or gentle vision shaping. Dr. Horiszny says, “OrthoK is the most effective treatment for slowing the progression of nearsightedness. This treatment involves fitting a specialized gentle mold or contact lens designed to reshape the eye surface. The lens is only worn
during sleep. It’s like a ‘retainer’ for the eye, refocusing and realigning the visual image to slow or stop eye growth. Many kids no longer need
correction during the day within a few days of starting treatment.” Jashona remembers the first night Jashaun wore the OrthoK lenses. “The next morning, after we took out the lenses, Jashaun said, ‘I

can see!’ I went crazy testing him...pointing at different things and seeing if he could read them. We had a follow-up with Dr. Horiszny that day. He was 20/20 in one eye, and only slightly deficient in the other! She gave us a disposable to wear in that eye during the day, which I think he wore for only two days. I remember Jashaun’s first basketball game after starting OrthoK. I was so scared his vision would ‘wear off.’ Dr. Horiszny assured me it probably wouldn’t, but we had backup just in case. She was right! It lasted all day! Now Jashaun can see the basketball and the court without the hindrance of glasses. This was a good move for us!” Is your child nearsighted? Schedule an appointment to learn more about OrthoK. Dr. Horiszny says, “For most myopic (nearsighted) children, the nearsightedness progressively worsens. They need stronger prescription glasses with thicker, heavier lenses with each passing year. While there is no outright cure for myopia, in many cases we can slow it’s progression with OrthoK. The added bonus is often times we completely eliminate the need for corrective lenses during the day, which is especially beneficial for athletes like Jashaun!” Today’s Vision Sugar Land 281-242-2020 15337 Southwest Freeway Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.2020sugarland.com

Understanding What’s in Your Will by Amy Sharp

hen Debbie Helms was an Assistant Manager at Brookfield Property Management, one of the tenants hired Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly to assist with her will. Debbie says, “We had many attorneys at Brookfield, but none specialized in family law and establishing wills. Our tenant found Margie very easy to work with!” It was so easy, Debbie and her husband Rick hired Margie to establish wills for them. Debbie says, “Margie took care of the whole thing in one sitting. She set up a preliminary will, then asked us questions. When the legalese made us crossed-eyed, she dumbed it down for us. Margie is very, very organized and makes sure you understand exactly what you are reading. She doesn’t tell you what decisions to make, but is very careful to make sure you understand the ramifications of each way the decision could go. There is a lot of information that goes into a will, and we didn’t want to just sign. With Margie, we felt confident in what we were signing. We also asked Margie if our
children could come to her with questions if we both passed. She said, ‘Of course!’ That also gave me a lot of confidence.” Now both retired, Rick fills his days umpiring baseball for high schools, junior highs and some colleges. “Rick’s been umping for 30 plus years,” says Debbie. “It’s the perfect retirement job. He loves working with kids. He’s been doing it so long, he’s now a mentor...encouraging and teaching up and coming umpires.” Debbie volunteers as a screener for East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry. “I meet with families and determine if there is a need for food or financial assistance with utilities or rent. They do everything right at East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, and I walk away each week feeling like I did something good!” Both Rick and Debbie recommend Margie for all of your family law needs. “She’s a nice person,” says Debbie. “And her personality allows you to ask questions and understand. When it comes to doing your will...you want someone who truly cares.”

ormone imbalance is a gradual process. Symptoms can include unexplained weight gain, loss of energy, diminished sex drive, erectile dysfunction, memory loss, muscle mass diminishment and/or depression. Primary care physician Dr. Julia Ward says, “It can happen so slowly, many people just think it’s their ‘new normal’...that it’s to be expected as you age. But it doesn’t have to be that way!” At Balanced Body Functional Medicine, Dr. Ward takes a look at your total health. “Often times,” says Dr. Ward, “bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a piece of this puzzle. Unlike conventional hormone replacement therapy that utilizes synthetic or animal-based hormones, BHRT hormones are identical on a molecular level to hormones that occur naturally in our bodies. And initially, BHRT hormone therapy will make you feel
fantastic. However, experience has shown that after three or four months you may not get the same boost that you did initially. That’s why I also address diet and lifestyle factors, making sure your body is getting the nutrients and supplements it needs. And I almost always recommend detox. This isn’t starvation or a juice cleanse. It’s akin to changing the air filter in your house. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, boost your energy levels, or just become a more healthy version of yourself, it’s easier to do when the body is running at maximum efficiency. A detox helps with metabolism and it helps with brain function. Your body will better respond to nutrients, supplements and hormones. As you can see, regular detox really is great for everyone!” It’s time to literally stop dragging your feet. Take an active role in your health instead of letting your health control your life. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Ward today...you’ll have your life back in no time!

amilies are like the branches on a tree. They may grow in different directions, yet their roots remain the same. And for the Burkhalters of Alan’s Plumbing— Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter and his beautiful wife Jennifer—those roots are not only going deeper, they’re expanding in the most marvelous way possible. “We’ve got two great reasons to celebrate right now,” explains Alan, the owner/ operator of Alan’s Plumbing. “First, we’d like to introduce our new plumbing apprentice Christian Campbell. We’re really happy to have him on-board. Next, Jennifer and I are proud to announce that our son Beau Burkhalter just got married to the love of his life, Courtney. So we’ve added a wonderful new daughter-in-law to the family.” Joining the sizable Burkhalter clan is no small thing! Alan and Jennifer have three grown sons—Luke, Jake, and Beau. Luke is a master plumber like both his dad and his uncle, Chris Burkhalter. Beau Burkhalter is currently journeyman licensed, and he is very close to achieving master plumber as well. Long-time employee Jeff Johnson is also journeyman licensed, and apprentices Jake Burkhalter, Jaime and Trevor are working toward their journeyman license. Family is everything at Alan’s Plumbing, which may account for why they’ve been serving the Fort Bend community for over thirty years now. If you have a burst pipe or a clogged drain, if you need a new hot water heater or are trying to fix a problematic toilet, it would be difficult to find a harder-working, friendlier, or more knowledgeable crew. “You’re family, too,” says Alan. “That’s why our prices are fair and transparent with no surprises. Not only do we leave your home cleaner than we found it, we get the job done right the first time. Give us a call and see what being family feels like.”

A Plumbing Tip From Your Friends at Alan’s Plumbing Instead of pouring caustic chemicals down your clogged kitchen, bathtub and shower drains, try pouring pure bleach into the drain opening. Bleach cuts through both hair and grease. Doing this two or three times will take care of any hair, grease or soap scum that may be slowing the water flow. If this pro-tip doesn’t work right away, you can remove the tub drain stopper by lifting it out or unscrewing it. This will allow you to clean out any accumulation by hand. Before reattaching the stopper, pour bleach into the drain. For severe clogs, wait 15 minutes and repeat. Once you’re finished, re-secure your stopper and you’ve got an environmentally friendly solution to your slow or clogged drains!

urviving one of Fort Bend’s muggy, triple-digit summers means having a close, personal relationship with your air conditioner. The minute we get in our cars, we crank those air vents toward us and crank our air conditioners on high. It seems as though the hotter it gets, the more motivated we are to dash from one air conditioned space to another. But have you ever wondered exactly how air conditioning works? Because the better you understand the science behind an air conditioner, the more you will appreciate the artistry of an air conditioning system like the Trane XV20i Variable Speed unit with TruComfort technology. She tried to stop the leak herself, and ultimately our entire first floor had an inch of water on it. Luckily, she was bonded and insured...and that insurance replaced all of our flooring!” Local Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services is independently owned by Imelda Mahoney and her daughter Casandra. Imelda has been cleaning homes since her children were in elementary school, and Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services officially started in 2007. Meeting Benita’s requirement, all Mahoney’s teams are bonded and insured. They also arrive in uniforms and clearly marked company cars.
“They’re great!” says Benita. “The Mahoney’s teams have been cleaning my home for three years now. They always want to please the customer. We’re all human and make mistakes, but if I point out a spot they missed they gladly clean it. Once they forgot a sink. I called Imelda, and the team turned around and came back just to do that sink.” “But what I love the most,” continues Benita, “is the flexibility. When I need to change my cleaning, I don’t want to wait a week. Mahoney’s bends over backwards to accommodate my crazy schedule. At first I wanted to be here when they cleaned, so accommodating my pockets of time was especially important. When we gutted the entire downstairs, they cleaned our upstairs through the chaos and the drywall dust, working around our construction schedule. Now after three years, I trust them to work even when I’m not here. They’re just so easy to work with. I have in the past and continue to recommend Mahoney’s to others.” As Benita has discovered, Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services is a bonded and insured cleaning service with a personal touch. EXPERIENCE the Joy of Easter
by Amy Sharp
Come Celebrate with Sugar Land Baptist Church
E
aster at Sugar Land Baptist Church is special. Senior Pastor Dr. Taylor Sandlin says, “Easter is the highlight of the Christian year, and Holy Week is a good opportunity to slow down and reflect upon what Christ has done for us. We are hosting activities and services throughout the week to better help your family experience the joy of Easter.” Then on Easter Sunday, Sugar Land Baptist Church kicks off the day with a sunrise service at 7am on the east lawn. “Don’t worry,” says Taylor, “the east lawn is easily visible from the parking lot. This is a more intimate service and we serve breakfast tacos afterward. We also begin the ‘Flowering of the Cross’ at this service. We place a cross at each entrance to the church, and our congregation brings cut flowers to decorate it. By the end of the second Easter Sunday service, it’s a beautiful spot. Much like the Christmas tree, the flowered cross is a wonderful place to snap a family photo each year and measure how much your children have grown. My wife and I love looking back at the pictures of our kids by the flowered cross!” And while the sunrise service is intimate, the 9:45am Easter Sunday service is a huge celebration of the best Sunday of the year. “It’s a stirring service,” says Taylor. “We will have a full orchestra with more than 30 people, and a choir of about 100. We invite you to either of the services, or both! Together, we will celebrate

Termites! T
hey’re the enigmatic creatures that collectively outweigh human beings ten to one and consume $40 billion worth of valuable stuff annually. There are more than 2,000 species across the world, but only about 45 different kinds of species of termites are found in the United States. In the Fort Bend County and Greater Houston areas, termites that infest a home are likely to be of the subterranean varieties. But did you know that just one subterranean termite colony can contain up to 1 million members? A telltale sign that termites are present is damaged wood that appears to be layered. This happens because the termites only eat the softwood portion, leaving the hardwood. These pests live in the soil beneath and around your home, and they often enter through wood that touches the ground, or by constructing mud tubes from the ground to the wood they infest. These mud tubes or tunnels are another telltale sign!
by Marie Page
But what do you do if you have termites, and how can you prevent them? Certified Applicator and Certified Master Inspector John Onofrey with BUGCO Pest Control says, “Here at BUGCO Pest Control, we have a team of professionals that are highly trained in dealing with termites, especially subterranean termites that are so prevalent here in the Houston area. When you call us to come out and give a free estimate, we are going to be able to tell you what your problem is. We will identify the specific termite that you’re dealing with, and give you an effective solution at a very reasonable cost.” Chris Millward, General Manager at BUGCO Pest Control, says, “One of the most effective treatments that you can apply to get rid of subterranean termites
is a chemical barrier treatment. What we do is install a chemical barrier around the entire perimeter of your structure to eliminate and kill termites. Here at BUGCO, we use the best termiticide on the market today. It has a pass-through effect. In other words, termites don’t know what they’re getting into, and they’re not repelled by it. They get into it and they get infected by it and they bring it back to the colony and then...the entire colony dies.” BUGCO Pest Control has an outstanding reputation for 5-Star customer service and is known for their attention to detail. Like all BUGCO Pest Control treatments, termite treatment is automatically covered by a warranty. Subterranean termite treatments are warranted for one year. But John adds, “That warranty can be extended with an annual inspection.” Whether it’s termites or other tiny creatures that you just don’t want in or near your home, give BUGCO Pest Control a call today for all of your pest control needs!

atasha Howard is the Practice Manager for Frederick Brown MD. In his spa-like office in Missouri City, Dr. Brown practices both family medicine and sports medicine. Dr. Brown regularly refers patients to Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, and Natasha just happens to be a patient as well! “I think we have been working with Campbell’s for about five years,” says Natasha. “I’ve been a patient for about the same length of time, so I can speak from both facets. Campbell’s Compounding is a very personal pharmacy. They don’t just fill your prescription. They want to know how you’re doing, if the medication is working for you, and they always offer wonderful suggestions. Delivery of medication is also important. They go above and beyond to make sure you receive your medicine in a timely fashion.” “Dr. Brown uses Campbell’s to compound medications in exact doses for our patients,” continues Natasha. “Many of these medications are hormone therapies, including testosterone, progesterone and thyroid medications. There is a trust between Dr. Brown and Campbell’s. Compounding specifically for a patient’s needs requires lots of precision and calculation. The

Medicine pharmacists at Campbell’s triple check these calculations and call if they think something is amiss. They make sure our patients are taken care of. We’ve also had times where our supply of certain medications, like numbing agents, was down in the office. Summer Camp Has Never Sounded So Good
M
aking music actually changes the way your brain is wired. Students who study music score higher on the SAT, and the difference is staggering. According to one study, kids score as much as 63 points higher on verbal, and 44 points higher on math. That’s the difference between getting into a good college and a first-rate college. Those who study music develop areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. Even when using sheet music, musicians are constantly tasked to use their memory to recall notes and flourishes. With music, the muscle of memorization is flexed in a way that helps in academics too. Learning to play music also bestows a deep sense of achievement and satisfaction, far more so than simply telling a child he or she did well on something. Plus, it’s FUN! So where do achievers go to have fun, improve their cognitive skills, and make beautiful music? Fort Bend Music Center is the place to be. “Whether you’re 2 years old or 102 years old, we’ve got an option that will work for you,” says Lindsey Thielsen, Lessons Department General Manager at Fort Bend

“Our summer music camps fit all ages, levels, and schedules. All you have to do is show up, and we will supply you with everything else.” Music Center. “Our summer music camps fit all ages, levels, and schedules. All you have to do is show up, and we will supply you with everything else.” At music camp for ages 18 months to 6 years, kids and parents will experience an introduction to music, including piano, voice, rhythm, and greater musical appreciation. If you have older kids, give them the full immersive musical experience. Five days in a row for ages 7-9, 10-12, 13-19, and even adults (ready to make good on that bucket list item to learn how to play an instrument?). Each day at Fort
Bend Music Center offers fun, dynamic lessons in drums, voice, brass, guitar, and piano. Sign up for one camp—or as many as you want. “Kids who are involved in music don’t just improve their skills, they improve themselves,” explains Lindsey. “When you put in the discipline, effort and hard work to master an instrument, that sense of achievement translates into other subjects as well. Many studies have also shown that the best way to keep an older brain from deteriorating is to teach it something new.” “Come visit us at Fort Bend Music Center! We will make your summer fun!”

True Emergency A

lizabeth Lorber visited St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms after getting slammed in the face by an 18 pound medicine ball. Elizabeth says, “I coach dry land conditioning for ESCALATE Aquatic Team. I was setting up a circuit, and slammed down the medicine ball to see if it was too heavy. I didn’t realize it was a rubber floor, and it bounced up and popped me right in the face.” “I was immediately in severe pain,” continues Elizabeth, “and there was blood coming from my mouth. This hurt more than anything I’ve ever been through in my entire life. Three kids were in the gym with me, and they ran to get help. I knew I needed to go to the ER. I had used St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms before, and the service was incredible. I also felt like my jaw might be broken, and I knew St. Michael’s could do X-rays and CT scans on-site.” Elizabeth’s friend called St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms to let them know they were on their way. “We walked in,” says Elizabeth, “and they gave the paperwork to my friend and took me right back. I
was in so much pain, I couldn’t talk...just cry. The gave me something to calm me down and began triaging immediately. I had major swelling in my face. A CT scan revealed I had no broken bones or teeth, just a big knot on my chin. I needed two stitches in my bottom lip and two or three more in my top lip. They did an amazing job on the stitches...with the precision of a plastic surgeon. In fact, they told me they train with plastic surgeons for incidences just like this!” “With minimal to no wait and the necessary equipment on-site, this is a true emergency room,” says Elizabeth. “The doctor also followed up with a phone call the next day, and when I called on a Sunday with a question, the doctor called me back personally. I absolutely recommend St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, hands down.” Learn more about St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms at www.24hrer.com and by following them on Facebook and Twitter. 16062 SW Freeway (at Hwy 6) Sugar Land, TX 77479 281-980-HELP (4357)

Adeel moved to the United States from Pakistan in 1996 to attend the University of Central Oklahoma. After graduation, he worked in IT with big names including GE and HP. It was Hewlett-Packard that brought Adeel to Houston. A self-described hard worker, Adeel knew he wanted something of his own. “I’ve always had higher goals,” says Adeel. “Goals that included working for myself. I’ve actually owned a couple of businesses in the past, but I’ve always been the absentee/silent owner as I continued to work in IT. I purchased Miracle Method Surface Refinishing this past December, and now it’s my job. I’m truly working for myself!” When Adeel stumbled upon the Miracle Method Surface Refinishing opportunity, he knew it was perfect. “Paul and Jonee Barnett started this local Miracle Method Surface Refinishing franchise 17 years ago,” says Adeel. “It’s a great business with a great product, and it’s a successful business of nearly 20 years. I’m a big believer in recycling and taking care of the environment. What we do here at Miracle Method Surface Refinishing is refinish existing bathtubs, showers and countertops in place. Fantastic Flooring Within Budget by Amy Sharp
M
ore than 20 years ago, Shawn and Amanda Clarke hired Lone Star Floors to put down flooring and carpet. Shawn says, “We like supporting local businesses, and they were just down the street from us. It was a great experience. A few years later, we had them do our daughter’s room. Most recently, we had a fire in the house and they did all of our flooring and carpet during the remodel.” For this latest remodel, the Clarke’s looked for flooring at many places, both big and small. “But we kept coming back to Lone Star Floors,” says Shawn. “We’ve always worked with Terry. We like the way he interacts with customers. He has a very calm demeanor and listens intently. What he says is always relevant. He doesn’t upsell, and he works with our budget recommending changes and compromises to stick to it. We wanted a floor that looks like wood. There are many choices, including tile, laminate and real
hardwoods. After listening to what we wanted, Terry pulled a laminate that we had overlooked multiple times. We immediately said, ‘That’s it!’ and it fit our budget. It was right under our noses, and Terry understood exactly what we were looking for.” Lone Star Floors is locally owned by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer, and Imad Mansour. They have been in business for more than 30 years. In addition to flooring, Lone Star Floors does full kitchen and bathroom remodeling— including plumbing, shower glass, painting and granite. “We are very happy with both our installation and the end result,” says Shawn. “It all came together perfectly. We didn’t buy high-end, just middle of the road. But it looks fantastic, like high end flooring! I referred my sister to Lone Star Floors and she is picky, picky, picky. She is also very happy! I can’t say enough about them. We recommend Lone Star Floors, and are currently considering them again to put in our countertops!”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
I Can Feel My Feet Again
W
by Sara Adams
illye White has been dealing with neuropathy for years. The pain and numbness in her legs had become so bad that she could barely stand in the shower long enough to rinse off. She was unable to feel her feet for over a year. That same pain kept her from getting her own groceries or going to her weekly Bible study. She was surprised when her family doctor suggested she see a chiropractor. Her daughter, a nurse practitioner, did some research and recommended that Willye make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Steve Harris. Dr. Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982 and has been in practice for over 40 years. Known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers gentle and effective chiropractic care. Through his years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. His natural, non invasive, gentle approach promotes relief from pain and healing. As a retired nurse, Willye appreciated Dr. Harris’s holistic approach to treating his patients. She says, “He treats the entire person. Dr. Harris and his entire staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. He told me, ‘I can’t cure you, but I can make your life better.’ I liked that.” After a few treatments with Dr. Harris, Willye’s flexibility increased to the point that she can touch her toes and she began to feel her feet again. Willye says, “Before I saw Dr. Harris, I couldn’t stand for more than three minutes. The pain was so bad, it was like I was standing on sticks. My kids were grocery shopping for me, and I couldn’t go out to lunch with friends because it was too painful to sit that long.”

“The neuropathy is still there, but it is not like it was,” says Willye. “I can grocery shop and put them away all at one time. I look forward to getting out with friends for lunch or a Bible study. I feel like I have more control of my life. Because of Dr. Harris, my quality of life has improved.” Willye wants to remind all of us, “We don’t have tomorrow, we only have today, and we have to make today the best we can.”
