Houston Methodist Childbirth Center at Sugar Land offers outstanding care for high-risk pregnancies and premature babies.

P

regnancy is supposed to be a wonderful time for moms-to-be. Planning for your baby’s arrival – and dreaming of the day your little bundle of joy is born – are the best parts of the experience. But what happens if medical challenges interfere? Sometimes, pregnancy can cause serious issues that threaten the health of both mom and baby, including hypertension (high

blood pressure) and gestational diabetes. In some cases, labor must be induced early to protect mom – even if baby isn’t quite ready for life outside of the womb. Fortunately for moms-to-be in Fort Bend County and surrounding areas, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is uniquely positioned to safely provide the best possible care for any birth, including those considered high risk.

The hospital’s Childbirth Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offer unparalleled round-the-clock care – close to home. With experienced, caring nurses and a wide range of specialists, including obstetricians, maternalfetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists, neonatologists and pediatricians, the Houston Methodist Childbirth Center at Sugar Land gives moms-to-be the peace of mind and confidence they need.

What makes the Childbirth Center at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Special? Our unique amenities include:

• Tranquil, private and family-centered labor and delivery suites • Dedicated obstetrical (OB) emergency rooms for rapid maternal assessment

• 24/7 access to on-site board-certified OB-GYNs with specialized training in emergency care for moms and babies

• NICU with 24/7 on-site neonatology providers to monitor high-risk and premature babies

high-risk pregnancies,” said board-certified neonatologist Shaeequa Dasnadi, M.D., medical director of the Houston Methodist Sugar Land NICU. “Many times, those risks lead to labor being induced early to protect mom’s health, and that means the baby is premature. Being close to home removes a great deal of the stress, time and travel involved for parents, especially if the baby remains in the NICU for several weeks.”

In years past, women with early deliveries would have their newborn transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital while they recovered at Houston Methodist Sugar Land, primarily due to concerns for the baby. Now Houston Methodist Sugar Land’s NICU – soon to be classified Level III, the only one in Fort Bend – is A First Time capable of providing Mom’s Experience complex, round-theclock care for infants Like most first-time Dr. Lauren Swords born at less than 32 Maternal Medical Director moms, Houston Methodist weeks gestational age Sugar Land employee or who weigh less than 3.3 pounds, as well as Taylor Diaz didn’t expect to have any issues with any critically ill newborn. her pregnancy. me feel better,” Diaz said. “They were absolutely amazing. I shed a lot of tears because I was so worried, but they were right by my side the whole time, comforting me.”

Complicated by COVID-19 Diaz was induced on Thursday, April 9 at 6 p.m., and after nearly 24 hours of labor, baby Valor was born on April 10 at 4:09 p.m. Even though she was born about five weeks early, Valor was healthy enough to go home as soon as Diaz’ hypertension was under control. And while Diaz was happy that she and Valor were safe, her experience wasn’t exactly what she expected due to safety precautions put in place to protect patients from COVID-19.

certified OBs. And then, as her due date grew closer, it became a critical health issue. High blood pressure is a common condition during pregnancy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in every 12 pregnant women will experience serious hypertension. It is one of the leading causes of preterm delivery. When Diaz was 35 weeks pregnant, her blood pressure was high enough for her to be admitted to Houston Methodist Sugar Land. Medication helped get her blood pressure under control so she could go home, but it spiked again the next day. At that point, her doctor told her that she would need to be induced as soon as possible – for her safety as well as her baby’s. “I was really upset when I found out that I needed to be induced,” recalled Diaz. “I had hoped to get to at least 37 weeks. I just wasn’t mentally ready to deliver so soon.” Because she didn’t realize she would be induced that day, her husband David had not accompanied her to the doctor. She was admitted to the hospital before he could arrive, and she entered the Childbirth Center alone. But that didn’t last long. “The nurses just embraced me from the first minute and did everything they could to help

“It was difficult because I had always thought my mom would be with me when I gave birth, but it just wasn’t possible due to the limit of one visitor,” she said. “And after Valor was born, David and I still couldn’t have visitors to our room. The nurses said that moms were getting more rest without visitors popping in, and they were better able to bond because their babies weren’t being passed around for everyone to hold. They helped me to see things from a different perspective.” Plus, Diaz said, staff members were extremely diligent in following safety protocols. “I always felt safe,” she said. “Everyone was always wearing the proper protective equipment.” On Easter Sunday, Diaz and Valor were discharged. But at her first visit to the pediatrician two days later, Valor was diagnosed with jaundice. It was back to the hospital – this time, for Valor to be admitted to the NICU. It is so beneficial to have a quality NICU in our community,” said Lauren Swords, M.D., Diaz’s OB-GYN at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. “I know it took a lot of stress off of the Diaz family to have their baby so close to home.”

Happy and Healthy Fortunately, Valor’s stay in the NICU was a short one. Today – despite the rocky beginning to her life – she is healthy, happy and growing quickly. “I am so grateful to everyone in our Childbirth Center and NICU for the care we received and the compassion we were shown during such a challenging time,” said Diaz. “I saw first-hand how supportive nurses and physicians make the difference, and it makes me proud to say I’m an employee.”

hen sixty-eight-year-old Gene Amman started experiencing swelling in his legs and ulcers appeared, his dermatologist recommended he see Dr. Ulises Baltazar. Gene says, “My mother had severe varicose veins in her legs; it’s hereditary. I knew I needed to have my legs looked at.” At his appointment, an ultrasound revealed Gene has venous insufficiency. “Dr. Baltazar told me that it was very unusual to not experience pain with this condition,” says Gene. “But I told him that I have severe rheumatoid arthritis, so maybe I wasn’t noticing the pain in my legs! I found Dr. Baltazar to be exceptional. My father was an example of a good doctor. He spent a lot of time with his patients, and explained everything. Seeing Dr. Baltazar, it was like I had gone to see my own Dad.” Dr. Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Board certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery and General Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. To treat Gene’s condition, Dr. Baltazar utilized a non-invasive innovation in the treatment of venous insufficiency: the use of medical glue to physically shut down and seal the main defective vein. Dr. Baltazar says, “This procedure involves the placement of a very small amount of vein glue into the vein through a small catheter. Once the affected vein is closed, blood is immediately rerouted through other healthy veins in the leg. This treatment does not require a regional nerve block or large volumes of anesthesia. Patients can return to their normal activities right after the treatment.” Gene says, “I had the procedure done on one leg one day, and the

Your A/C runs a lot, and for that reason, you require the best, most efficient system around. “Trane systems are made right here in Tyler, Texas,” says Brian. “They’re made by people who know and understand the kind of hot, humid weather we deal with for more than half the year. If your old system barely made it through the summer, you need to experience how good life can be with a Trane XV20i Variable Speed air conditioner. It’s what I have in my own home. This system means no more hot spots, and no more high energy bills. You can control specific room temperatures with the press of a smartphone button. Want to cool down the

house before you come in from work? No problem. You’ve got complete access from your computer, laptop or smartphone. Even better, right now most customers are eligible for 0% financing or Trane instant rebates, plus generous rebates from Centerpoint.” As we move into late October and early November, you can bet we’ll start to see those wild Texas temperature fluctuations. “The temperature might drop 30 degrees in just a few hours,” continues Brian. “And you need to turn the furnace on. It’s important to have your furnace checked BEFORE you need to turn it on. Not getting your annual inspection can put your family at risk. On average, fire departments nationwide respond to about 72,000 carbon monoxide poisoning incidents each year, and some of those are fatal. he plastic and reconstructive surgeons of Institute for Reconstructive Surgery are dedicated to helping patients restore form and function lost to trauma, cancer, disease and congenital differences. Their goal is for patients to enjoy the moments in life that have nothing to do with the trauma that brought them into the office. They aim to minimize the physical remembrances of what happened, so that patients can move on with their lives. Institute for Reconstructive Surgery was started in 2005 with four surgeons. Today, that roster has grown to 15 with six office locations serving the Greater Houston area. These doctors are performing complex reconstructive surgeries to achieve best possible outcomes. “The product that our group is creating is excellence, and people would be amazed as to what is possible from a reconstructive standpoint,” remarks Dr. Jeffrey D. Friedman. “Frequently, patients and physicians have no idea as to the realities of contemporary

reconstructive surgery – How do you make a functional body part work again (such as the face, arm, leg)?” Featured on Larry King Live and Oprah, Dr. Eugene Alford used advanced techniques to restore the face of the domestic gun violence victim famously referred to as the “woman without a face.” Dr. Anthony Echo and Dr. Steven Gordon are widely known for treating amputees suffering from phantom limb pain by rerouting the nerves into major muscle groups. A complex scalp and skull transplant was performed by Dr. Michael J.A. Klebuc and a team of specialized surgeons. For breast cancer patients, the team at Institute for Reconstructive Surgery restores form, function, and sensation. Whether a patient has a breast cancer diagnosis or a BRCA mutation, there are many options available. Advanced nerve transfer procedures are being used to restore movement of those affected by facial paralysis. Other specialties include extremity reconstruction and restoration,

pelvic and genitourinary reconstruction, and nerve and sports injury restoration. This is Medical Center-quality care right here at home. Patients are cared for the moment they call into the practice with personalized care. “We don’t have a phone tree,” says Dr. Friedman. “Anytime patients call, they will reach a human being and can be seen in a relatively short period of time. If you call here, the answer is always, ‘Yes, and if the condition requires it, we can see you tomorrow.’ The department staffs experienced billers in each office to help navigate the nuances of your insurance for you. on’t you hate it when you pay for your groceries but forget to put them in the car? Wait a minute…you would NEVER do this! But maybe you’re doing the very same thing with your dental benefits. Dr. Thomas Lomonte in Stafford says, “Each year, millions of people allow their dental benefits to go to waste. If you’re paying your dental insurance premiums every month, you should be using your benefits.” “Premiums, yearly maximums, deductibles and the certainty that dental problems will worsen are all extremely important reasons to maximize utilizing your dental benefits,” continues Dr. Lomonte. “Even if you don’t require any treatment, regular cleanings are proven to help prevent and detect early signs of cavities, gum disease and other dental problems.” When you do need treatment, nearly all plans have a yearly maximum, which is the absolute most money your plan will pay in a calendar year. But unused money does not rollover and is lost January 1st. “Delaying dental treatment today puts you at risk for more expensive and extensive (and painful!) dental work down the road,” explains Dr. Lomonte. “And if you’ve already had some work done this year, chances are you have met your deductible. So it pays to

have the additional work done before the year ends. Just like the yearly maximum, the deductible also resets on January 1.” As an added bonus, health flexible savings account money can be used to pay for your portion of any dental work. Like dental plans, FSAs are also “use or lose it.” From moms and dads to kids and grandparents, Dr. Lomonte has been everyone’s family dentist since 1982. Call Dr. Lomonte today and schedule an appointment. If you require treatment, Dr. Lomonte and his team will walk you through the options and help you pick the treatment that works best for your mouth, your smile, your schedule, and your benefits plan. But not for the lucky students at Arthur Murray Sugar Land! April Muller co-owns Arthur Murray Sugar Land with her husband Chris. April says, “Dancing is great for mental health, and it’s therapeutic. We get the body moving, and the endorphins going. We are dancing here at the studio, and we are doing it safely. Each student can choose the activities and experiences they feel comfortable with. For private lessons, a student or couple has the entire studio to themselves if they wish. Students can social distance from the masked instructor, and bring their own partner if desired. At semi-private lessons, even though we no longer rotate partners, each of the few masked couples in the studio get to know each other from afar. We also host physically-distanced masked dance parties that present as if you were out dancing. The dust bunnies that might be lurking under your nightstand, waiting for your unsuspecting feet! Fortunately, there is an army of kind, wonderful, efficient super-cleaners who do! At Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services, a house isn’t truly clean until it’s been “Mahoneyed.” So, what does that mean exactly? “My mother, Imelda Mahoney, started with nothing but her genuine desire to do right by others,” says her daughter Casandra. “That’s how she built Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services. By teaming up with other moms in our neighborhood, she was able to put her kids through college, including me. She is truly one of the hardest working people I know.” Let’s face it—no one knows how to do a deep clean on your house like a mom. “Our teams of eagle-eyed moms get all the sticky dust off your ceiling fans,” continues Casandra. “We remove hard water stains from your shower door. We move furniture to vacuum up dirt and dust. We scour, polish, wipe, and organize not just the surfacey stuff, but the dirt you don’t always see, the kind that lives in the cracks and crevices of your house. Make Sure

by Amy Sharp

All is

Cool

Before It’s Time to Heat It Up

“I

’ve been in this business for 40 years,” says All Cool A/C & Heating owner Bryan Bellamy. “And thanks to COVID-19, this spring may have been the craziest yet. With so much going on, a lot of people either didn’t check their systems for spring, or they only did partial checkups. For this reason, we are doing complete A/C and heating checkups for all of our customers this fall/winter.” We know what you’re thinking: “Sure, I use my A/C a ton...and it probably needs to be checked. But the heater? Not so much!” Bryan says, “A heating system tune-up is part of a routine maintenance program that keeps your unit working properly. If your home heating system develops problems, you may be compromising your safety. Incomplete combustion in a gas system can produce hazardous gases, including carbon monoxide. A leak in your heat exchanger can cause dangerous gases to enter your home. A heater checkup gives you peace of mind that potentially dangerous problems and expensive repairs are detected early.” A professional heater tune-up with All

Cool includes a thorough cleaning and check of all major parts of the heater. The burner and pilot assembly will be inspected and cleaned to ensure proper combustion. The heat exchanger will be inspected for cracks or problems to decrease the likelihood of toxic fumes emitting from the system. Bryan says, “Carbon monoxide is odorless, so it’s simple to overlook a leak. I can’t stress enough how high carbon monoxide levels in the air can cause fatal results.” Half of all homeowners do not get a unit inspection until problems occur. Knowing how vital tune-ups are to the safety, efficiency, and life of a unit, All Cool offers their All Cool Comfort Membership program. Membership includes both a fall and spring tune-up, and other special privileges. Skip-nic for the Park

by Amy Sharp

N

ow more than ever, we need green space for families to social distance...and we are lucky to have a park that is as big as Central Park in New York City and nearly twice the size of Hermann Park in Houston! If you haven’t visited, Cullinan Park is a 754 acre city park just north of Sugar Land Regional Airport. It features an observation tower, nature trails, a .33 mile trail around White Lake, a restroom facility, a boardwalk and a scenic overlook. Cullinan Park is the perfect place to enjoy nature with your family. Due to the uncertainty that comes with COVID-19, the Cullinan Park Conservancy Board of Directors has decided to skip holding its annual Picnic

for the Park fundraiser this year. Instead, they are hosting a “Skip-nic”: an online auction October 14-16 full of unique items and packages, including outdoor experiences, lobster dinners and cocktails with park patrons, and other one-of-a-kind items. The beautiful photograph winners from Cullinan Park Conservancy’s 2020 photo contest will also be showcased at this event. To see more winning photo contest entries and to learn more about Cullinan Park and Skip-nic for the Park, visit www.cullinanparkconservancy.org or visit the Conservancy on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ CullinanParkConservancy.

edicare. It’s confusing. If you’re turning 65 soon, or maybe you’re already 65, you need to know your options. Andrew Cheng, Principal at local Clutch City Insurance, says, “The bottom line is: If you get sick or something catastrophic happens, you will be paying outlandish amounts if you only have what is called original or traditional Medicare.” Why is that? Original Medicare has NO out of pocket maximum. Hospital stays have a deductible. Medical visits and outpatient procedures also have a deductible, plus the patient is responsible for 20%...with no ceiling. “It’s easy to see how a hospital stay could be very costly,” says Andrew. “But it doesn’t have to be. Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement are secondary insurances that can alleviate these potential costs.” At Clutch City Insurance, Andrew and his team help individuals understand their options and make educated choices when it comes to Medicare. “First,” says Andrew, “if you need to sign up for Medicare and

Ordinary Income Tax

The Silent Killer of Some Portfolios

D

by Marie Page

id you know that different parts of your taxable investment account are likely being taxed at different rates? Andy Sharp, President and CEO of Altere Financial, LLC, says, “Your financial advisor should always pay attention to your income tax return. Mitigating tax exposure can translate into keeping more of your money where it belongs: in your hands.” “For some people,” continues Andy, “the difference in tax rate between their ordinary income tax rate and the long-term capital gains rate is vast. When this happens, it may be in their best interest to lean toward the capital gains rate. For example, any sale of stock under a year after purchase is taxed at your ordinary income tax rate. For those in higher tax brackets, it’s often best to wait at least 366 days to sell...taking advantage of the long-term capital gains rate instead.” What about bonds? “Bonds are also tricky. The interest you earn on many bonds is taxed at your ordinary income tax rate. Here again, if you’re in a high tax bracket, this is less than ideal. However, municipal bonds—say a bond benefiting the local school district—are often tax free. Not all bonds are created equal!”

And mutual funds? “Holding mutual funds in your taxable account does present a potential liability. The way these funds are structured, the funds must pass along 90% of gains to the investors when the fund owes taxes. So if there’s a lot of buying and selling within the fund, you could be on the hook for capital gains even if the market is down. We saw it in 2008. The market was down 38%, yet many mutual fund holders were paying huge capital gains bills. We very well could see that happen again in 2020.” How about a traditional IRA? They’re taxdeferred. Andy says, “Tax-deferred means you or your beneficiaries WILL more than likely pay the taxes someday. In a well-managed, taxable account, it’s actually possible to pay very little capital gains. We just have to offset the gains with the losses, for a neutral net gain. We can’t do this in an IRA, and by doing this in a taxable account you may not pay ordinary income tax like you will if you defer it in an IRA.” Andy has worked as a broker, financial planner, research analyst, product specialist, and financial consultant for a large financial services firm. He started Altere Financial, LLC to provide independent financial

planning. “This is an industry where every person is unique. It’s likely you don’t fit into a model. What works for one person ‘age 45-55 and retiring in 10-15 years’ may not work for the next. As always, discuss all decisions with your tax advisor or CPA.”

wins Troy and Trever Nehls are familiar faces in local law enforcement. Troy is currently our Fort Bend County Sheriff, and Trever is serving as Fort Bend Precinct 4 Constable. Both are raising their families here, and for more than 10 years both have depended on St. Michael’s Elite Hospital when their family members required immediate medical attention. Troy says, “I’ve known founder Dr. Shannon Orsak for many years. His emergency room and hospital is very professional, with a great staff...from the desk to the doctors. It’s clean and immaculate, and you never have to wait in the waiting room for an extended period of

time. We’ve taken our youngest daughter Tori for ear infections and what not. I took my late father-in-law to St. Michael’s when he wasn’t feeling well. I myself visited when I wasn’t feeling well. Our daughters Jenna and Cambry got tested for COVID-19 at St. Michael’s. Most recently, Cambry got stitches in her leg at St. Michael’s. It was eight or nine stitches, and we were out within an hour. I’ve always felt confident enough to send family and extended family, no matter how young or old. And I’ve recommended St. Michael’s to others. We’ve never had a bad experience there. Dr. Orsak is also our volunteer Chief Medical Advisor at the sheriff ’s office. He helps train our staff by

providing courses like Stop the Bleed, which saves police officers’ lives. Dr. Orsak is a very valuable resource to me and the 826 employees that call the sheriff ’s office home.” Trever agrees. “St. Michael’s has also provided my family and I exceptional service for the past 10 years. This staff is always welcoming and caring. Our 84-year-old mother Joyce was seen by St. Michael’s last year for flu-like symptoms. She was extremely impressed with the thorough examination. This past July, my daughter Madison was involved in a vehicle accident. She started to experience neck and back pain soon after the accident. I drove her to St. Michael’s to determine the extent of her injuries. As a father, I was so thankful for the tender care.” This November, both Troy and Trever are vacating their current positions and aiming to take their careers to the next level. Troy is the Republican candidate for US Congressional District 22, the seat being vacated by Representative Pete Olson. Trever is running for Fort Bend County Sheriff, the seat his brother will vacate. Each has a career highlighted by a dedication to public service. Troy is a retired Army Major, and Trever has 32 years of military experience with the US Army Reserve. Both have served the residents of Fort Bend County for more than 25 years.

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DRS. STEVE HARRIS AND ZACK BRAZZELL, DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

PAIN RELIEF FOR POLICE OFFICERS

J

by Amy Sharp

ohn Hermann has been a police officer for 28 years: 20 years on patrol with Sugar Land PD and eight years as Chief Deputy of the Fort Bend Precinct 4 Constable’s Office. John says, “Most people don’t realize just how much weight our police officers on the streets are carrying. The belt, the body armor, and the weight of the uniform...when you pack it all in a bag, it weighs more than 30lbs. I’m an office guy now, but I remember those hot summer days. We would sweat through our undershirts, and then the body armor gets wet too, adding even more weight. It’s no wonder so many of us experience back pain and other issues as we age.” Lucky for John, he met chiropractor Dr. Steve Harris more than 10 years ago. “Dr. Harris and I share common interests, and we became personal friends. I was having some back pain and arthritis issues in my hips. Dr. Harris bugged me for about a year to come into his office and see him. I’ll be honest. Before I met Dr. Harris, I didn’t have a lot of respect for chiropractors. I didn’t believe they could help me. But Dr. Harris and my wife convinced me I needed to see Dr. Harris. Finally, I jumped at it, and Dr. Harris straightened me out (my back I mean!). He has relieved the pressure in my back, which has provided relief to my hips, and as a result I also sleep better. I now go back for touch ups once a month.” Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982. In the summer of 2019, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. They offer a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with pain find relief and improve their overall health. “I’m a believer,” says John. “Dr. Harris has done a great job for me. The entire office is very friendly. Dr. Brazzell has also worked on me, I see Dr. Harris’s daughter Sophie at the office, and Liz and Jess are topnotch employees. I refer my fellow police John Hermann, Chief Deputy of the officers quite often. Just the other day, Fort Bend Precinct 4 Constable’s Office a lieutenant was experiencing back issues and needed to go home. I recommended Sugar Land Health Center, and the next day the officer was New Patient Special back at work. Dr. Harris fixed him right up!” In the upcoming November election, John is running for Fort Bend County Precinct 4 Constable (The Exam & Consultation position being vacated by Constable Trever J. Nehls.).
