While Dr. Lisa Mathew was a student at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, she did a rotation with Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph., owner of local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. After graduation, Dr. Mathew took a position with a retail pharmacy. She says, “I was there for a year. It was a different environment from what I had envisioned. It was large, we had a lot of turnover, and I didn’t feel connected to my patients.”
That all changed for Dr. Mathew when Dr. Campbell launched the Sugar Land

location of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. Dr. Mathew says, “Dr. Campbell reached out to me and asked if I would help open the new location. I was interested. It was appealing because I was at the point in my life where I was about to start a family. But I had no idea at the time how much I would love the job.”
In 16 years, Dr. Mathew has watched both Campbell’s Compounding stores grow and flourish. “It’s such a blessing,” says Dr. Mathew. “As a compounding pharmacy, we are able to tailor medications to a patient’s specific needs. For some, it’s dosage. Most manufactured medicines come in four to five different dosages. When a doctor is prescribing that drug, they come as close as they can to what the patient needs…which means the patient may be overmedicated or undermedicated. We can make that medication in the exact dosage required by your physician, even if you’re the only customer that requires that specific dosage. Compounding is also a great option for kids that can’t swallow pills or individuals with a G-tube. We can make required medications as a compounded liquid and even flavor it. Everything is completely customizable.”
“I wouldn’t still be working here if I didn’t love it,” continues Dr. Mathew. “This small, family-run business is family friendly and patient focused. I feel we are really able to provide continuity of care. It feels really good to see improvement in my patients, and for those that need a medication adjustment, I’m able to meet with them and see how to intervene. All of us here at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy are connected to the community. I see many of the same families, and I consider my patients my friends. They ask about my two boys and my husband, and vice versa…I know their families and check how they’re doing. I don’t think you can get that kind of culture anywhere else!”
