PARTNERSHIP Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Fort Bend ISD team up to keep student-athletes healthy and in the game.

E

lkins High school varsity basketball player Donovan Williams didn’t do anything out of the ordinary to hurt his knee. It was a typical fast break, as he moved quickly up the court just as he had done in so many other games before.

But this time, the young star knew something wasn’t right. The sudden pain in his right knee became a steady pain, and it never went away. Williams was one of the area’s most promising players when the early-season injury occurred during his sophomore year. The talented shooting guard was a highly regarded college prospect – this knee injury could have been a major setback.

Quick, thorough response is key Thanks to a unique partnership between Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Fort Bend ISD, Williams was able to get the expert orthopedic care he needed quickly, enabling him to return to the court faster and play at the same high level. Houston Methodist Sugar Land has been the official health care provider of Fort Bend ISD athletics since 2014. It’s a multi-faceted partnership that provides a wealth of benefits to the district’s schools and its student-athletes, ensuring continuity and speed of care from the time of injury through diagnosis, treatment or surgery, and physical therapy and rehabilitation. As part of that program, board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist Timothy Sitter, MD, from Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Sugar Land, serves as team physician for Elkins High School working closely with the school’s long-time athletic trainer, June Tomlin. When Tomlin recognized that Williams was having trouble, she did an initial evaluation and set up an expedited appointment with Sitter. Sitter’s examination revealed a hairline fracture of the patella, or kneecap. “Donovan’s injury isn’t unusual in young athletes, especially basketball players,” said Sitter. “They tend to grow rapidly between the ages of 13-15, and often, their muscle and ligament strength doesn’t keep

pace with their bone growth. When that happens, there is less support for the kneecap, and when a player makes a sudden lateral movement, the patella can be forced out of place, sometimes leading to a fracture.” Sitter determined that Williams did not need surgery. Instead, he immobilized Williams’ knee for two weeks and later, prescribed a special brace to protect the kneecap and keep it in place while it continued to heal. In addition, Sitter worked with Tomlin to implement a rehabilitation program that enabled Williams to regain mobility and build his leg strength to protect against future injuries. The treatment and rehabilitation worked. By the start of his senior year, Williams had blossomed into one of the top 10 basketball prospects in Texas. He recently signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Texas, where he’ll suit up this fall. “When I came back after the injury, I felt like my old self,” said Williams. “I was fortunate to have Dr. Sitter as my doctor, who was just amazing. He knows so much, and he’s able to communicate it in a way that is easy to understand. I feel like I had a whole team of experts helping me get healthy and stay healthy.”

From campus to beyond: A full continuum of care Houston Methodist Sugar Land’s ability to provide seamless, highly skilled care begins right on the school’s campus. As Fort Bend ISD’s official health care partner, the hospital provides a full-time assistant athletic trainer for each of the district’s 11 high schools. These trainers support the district’s full-time staff and extend the coverage of experienced athletic training

professionals at games and practices across a range of sports. The assistant athletic trainer program plays a major role in helping Fort Bend ISD manage the sports medicine needs of its large athletic programs. In recent years, several potentially life-threatening emergencies were handled promptly by athletic training residents on Fort Bend ISD campuses and at games. In the fall of 2017, an athletic training resident used an AED and CPR to revive an athlete that had no pulse or respirations. The athlete made a full recovery, and lives a normal life today. Another athletic trainer within the same year recognized and referred an epidural hematoma and a ruptured spleen within two weeks of each other. The resident’s quick actions avoided surgery, and an uneventful recovery by both athletes. In addition, Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine’s specialists serve each of the district’s high schools as team physicians – seeing athletes on an expedited basis and working directly with the coaching and training staff to ensure injured players are receiving the follow-up care and rehabilitation they need. They also provide sideline coverage at every Fort Bend ISD home varsity football game and all playoff games. “The relationship we have with Dr. Sitter as a team physician is a definite plus for our student-athletes,” said Tomlin. “When we have an athlete who is receiving care, we have a direct line of communication with the physician, staff and physical therapists at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. And we work together to ensure that our students are getting the best care and rehab possible.” Houston Methodist Sugar Land also provides ambulance coverage at all

Houston Methodist Sugar Land also offers one of the country’s leading physical therapy/rehabilitation programs. Board-certified and fellowship-trained experts in sports therapy work directly with the hospital’s sports medicine specialists to create and implement training plans that help patients overcome their injury, regain their mobility and increase their strength.

Since the hospital offers specialists across the full range of sports medicine needs – including foot and ankle, knee and shoulder, hip, hand and upper extremity, primary care sports medicine and orthopedic spine surgery – young athletes can be promptly seen by a physician who is able to treat their injury and help them prevent future problems.

Houston Methodist: An all-star teammate for Fort Bend ISD

“Student-athletes who suffer an injury are just as eager as a professional athlete is to return to their sport,” said Sitter. “The goal of our partnership is to identify injuries promptly and ensure these young athletes see the proper specialist as quickly as possible to minimize the impact of their injury and maximize their ability to heal and start playing again.”

The collaboration between Fort Bend ISD and Houston Methodist Sugar Land gives student-athletes access to the best possible sports medicine care and treatment, all at one convenient location. It’s like having an all-star teammate you can always count on to come through in the clutch!

Many Fort Bend ISD student-athletes also take advantage of the hospital’s Saturday morning sports injury clinic, open weekly during the fall. The clinic is staffed by both a sports medicine physician and a licensed athletic trainer, and no appointment is necessary.

riginally from Venezuela, Daisy Levinson Krolczyk has called Sugar Land her home for the past 15 years. She has traveled the world and finds Sugar Land the perfect place to live, she calls it her Wonderland. “I find it so beautiful and clean. I love the way it continues to grow and develop, there is something new here every month. I feel like we could visit something new every day and never see it all.” Daisy started seeing Dr. Ulises Baltazar for the treatment of her varicose veins after she moved to Sugar Land. Dealing with varicose veins and spider veins most of her adult life, Daisy was thrilled to find a doctor who was not only an expert in his field, he was patient and kind as well. She says, “Varicose veins are my inheritance, they run in both sides of my family. The doctors I visited in the past made me feel rushed and the procedures were uncomfortable. Dr. Baltazar has never rushed me. He always takes the time to hear what is going on in my life, as well as what is going on with my legs. Dr. Baltazar asks about my husband, Joe. If he knows Joe is in the waiting room, Dr. Baltazar says, ‘Bring him in.’ He never hurries through my appointments.” Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. Daisy likes that Dr. Baltazar explains her procedures ahead of time. She says, “He always gives me the pros and cons and lets me decide for myself. During one office visit, he talked to me through the entire procedure. I was so involved with the conversation that I barely felt any discomfort. Even his staff is always helpful and pleasant. Dr. Baltazar really knows what he’s doing. I’ve recommended him a lot. From my first appointment with Dr. Baltazar I felt relaxed and welcomed immediately, it’s like visiting an old friend. He takes a real interest in me and my family. He will be my doctor for the rest of my life.”

fter Ashley Stokes’ car was totaled, she was in the market for another vehicle. “I was looking for a used car,” says Ashley. “I’ve never actually been in a position to buy a new car before, and I figured that was still the case.” Ashley’s family is friends with Ray Aguilar, the Business Development and Community Relations Manager at Classic Chevy Sugar Land. She says, “Ray set me up with Jason and Scott in sales. We started looking at used cars. They were so patient and kind! We talked about what I was looking for and my budget. Then they started to pull cars for me. I must have looked at and driven five to eight cars...and at least once I said, ‘No!’ the minute I saw it. I wanted to be in love with the car, and we just weren’t finding the one. It was my dad who suggested we look at new cars. Scott explained what they had if we went with a new car, and where we were financially. We looked at a 2019 Chevy Traverse. I loved it. But honestly, I almost walked out. I really wasn’t sure about the money. My dad suggested I take it home and drive it for the weekend. I drove it from Friday to Monday afternoon, anticipating that Monday I would go back and look at more used cars. That didn’t happen! I looked over the numbers some more. With some dealer incentives, it really wasn’t that much different. Plus, I plan to keep this car for a long time so I knew would be worth it.”

What Ashley experienced is the Classic Chevy Sugar Land difference. Local owners Jeff and Tiffany Sebastian take great pride in making buying a car both enjoyable and relaxing. Every sales person at Classic Chevy Sugar Land is equipped to help you find the car you love, whether it’s a new vehicle or pre-owned. Jeff says, “Buying a car is a major purchase. You should never feel pressured to settle, and pricing should be transparent. When the deal is done, all parties should feel good about it. That’s what we strive for here at Classic Chevy Sugar Land. I’m thrilled we could help Ashley with her very first brand new car purchase!” “Of course I recommend Classic Chevy Sugar Land,” says Ashley. “This wasn’t my first vehicle purchase, but it is my first NEW car. They are just so patient! I’ve also used the Classic Chevy Sugar Land service department in the past for oil changes. They were great experiences too. This is a great place all around.”

laudia and John O’Leary started using Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy six years ago. Claudia says, “My doctor told me about them and recommended we use them to compound some of our medications. We actually moved from Sugar Land to the Galleria area two years ago. Even though there is a closer Campbell’s Compounding location, I haven’t been there. I still drive to Sugar Land!” Why? “Because everyone in Sugar Land knows me by name! We have a friendly talk every time I go there. That means a lot to me. They are also very reliable and responsive and always take care of us immediately. Some of the staff have been there all six years and I’ve met new people too. It’s always the same level of amazing customer service. They are all very friendly and nice.” As a compounding pharmacy, Campbell’s is able to custom blend medication so it’s exactly what you need in the amount you need it. For those who hate pills, Campbell’s can turn your medication into a topical cream, a chewable, a liquid, or even a lollipop. And all commercial brands are stocked too! Campbell’s has an array of options for every need, every budget and almost every prescription and insurance plan. When Claudia gets busy and can’t make it to Sugar Land to pick up her medication, the staff at Campbell’s Compounding is more than happy to ship it to her with next day delivery. Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy founder Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph says, “As your friendly, one-stop, neighborhood pharmacy, overnighting medication is a service available to anyone. We know how busy your life can be!” “I rarely use the overnight service though,” says Claudia. “Because I like visiting with them and I’m always to happy to go there. I totally recommend Campbell’s... not just because they’re my friends, they’re really that good!”

I saw an advertisement for Lone Star Floors, and contacted them for an estimate. They could do all of the work, and the estimate was good. WORSHIP & ARTS

Art is one of the unique gifts God has given to us, and, by extension, it is one of the greatest offerings we can give back to him.

T

he primary goal of the Worship & Arts Ministry at Sugar Land Baptist Church is to provide a multigenerational worship experience that’s enlivened by the Holy Spirit. Clint Kimmel, Pastor of Worship & Arts, says, “The arts are a wonderful way for individuals of all ages to lead worship. Here at Sugar Land Baptist, we are driven by unity and our Sunday morning worship gathering is for all people to participate in worship.” There’s a ton of planning that goes into every 9:45am Sunday gathering at Sugar Land Baptist Church. Clint says, “Senior Pastor Dr. Taylor Sandlin and I design each service. We get together and discuss the scripture he has chosen for our church to study each week. Then the sermon and songs are crafted in a way that connect to the Word of God. Our choir of more than 100 voices is present every single week along with our worship band. Most weeks we have different combinations of additional orchestral instruments joining, and we are often led by a full orchestra. At times of the

year like Christmas and Easter, we design special worship services and music productions. We also occasionally feature the visual and performing arts, like dance and theater!” Of course, everyone is invited to experience the multi-faceted worship services at Sugar Land Baptist Church. Want to get involved? Contact Clint! He says, “We can get together and find a place for you to use your talents for the glory of the Lord and encouragement of the Church. In our worship band and orchestra, we welcome individuals who are high school age and up. If you play the guitar or are a string, woodwind, brass, or percussion player, there is a place for you! Instrumental groups meet on Sunday mornings before the service. Our choir meets every Wednesday evening. While the main Sanctuary Choir is limited to those age 18 or older, we do have a children’s choir that periodically leads our worship services in special ways. Future plans include expanding to all age groups, including our teenagers!” If you don’t sing or play an instrument, there are other ways to be involved. “Tech teams are vital to the creation of our services,” says Clint. “And as I mentioned earlier, we are always eager to incorporate the visual arts into our worship gatherings. In addition to our services, we also feature our Worship & Arts Ministry groups at various community events and performances. If you have an idea, a talent not mentioned, or just some questions...we would love to hear from you!”

ASK MARGIE The Lawyer Who Cares

THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:

You’ve Planned Your Vacation. Have You Planned For Your Family’s Future?

F

by Margie Connolly

amily vacations are fun to plan. Location, dates, activities, budget...all planned out and executed to accomplish a great getaway. But what will happen to your family and assets if you should die or become disabled? We get it. Nobody wants to contemplate his or her own mortality. That might explain why numerous recent studies have found that only between 35% and 45% of Americans have a will. But the fact is your loved ones will have to address those questions when you’re gone. A will lets you tell the world whom you want to get your assets. Die without one and the state decides who gets what without regard to your wishes or your heirs’ needs. Let’s break a will down into easy to follow steps: 1. Take inventory. Create a comprehensive list of your assets, including

investments, retirement savings, insurance policies, real estate or business interests, and collectible and sentimental items. 2. Name your team. Your executor is in charge of distributing your property, filing tax returns on behalf of your estate, and processing claims from creditors. Guardians care for your minor children in the event that you and their other parent dies. Power of attorney allows someone you trust to pay bills, manage investments, or make key financial decisions if you are unable to do so. A healthcare power of attorney advocates on your behalf, and makes decisions about your healthcare if you are unable to do so. 3. Create a living will. This is a statement of your wishes for the kind of life-sustaining medical intervention you want, or don’t want, in the event that you become terminally ill and unable to communicate. 4. Update your will about every 3-4 years. You’ll also want to update it after a major life change such as a birth, death, or marriage, or if you buy some real estate or receive an inheritance. 5. Decide if you need a trust. Contrary to popular belief, trusts aren’t just for rich people! If these benefits sound appealing—and they should—you can learn more about estate planning by talking with an estate planning attorney.

lkins High School graduate Jordan Cottingham is about to enter his junior year at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He loves coming home to visit his mom and little brother during school breaks...and there is one other person he makes sure to get in to see when he is here: his dentist, Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. in Stafford. Jordan says, “Dr. Lomonte’s office is down the street from my “He’s been my grandma and grandpa’s house. He’s been my dentist since I was about six or seven years old. I’ve had many cleanings in Dr. dentist since I Lomonte’s office, and a few fillings. The entire office is very friendly. I’m just very comfortable every time I’m in there. I’m a patient, and so are my mom and little brother. And actually, my cousins across the street also see Dr. Lomonte...the whole family!” Dr. Lomonte has been practicing dentistry at his same location on Murphy Road in Stafford since 1982. He says, “Here at our office, we’re big on smiles. Of course we’re talking about your teeth, but also your enjoyment. We love seeing entire families and getting to know each and every one of you. Safety

could be at risk!

Why Texas should not flush plumbing license laws.

W

hen it comes to your family’s health and safety, you want the very best. That’s why you would never hire an unlicensed doctor to deliver your children. Or an unlicensed dentist to take care of your toothache. For all these reasons and more, you wouldn’t dream of hiring an unlicensed plumber to fix problems that arise in the same house your family lives in. Unfortunately, there is pending legislation in Texas that might make it legal to work as a plumber without any license or certification. “Does it worry me? Yes,” says Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter, owner of local Alan’s Plumbing. “Although not for the reasons you might think. I’m not just a licensed plumber. I’m a dad and grandpa who knows firsthand what happens when you let an untrained, unlicensed worker fix your plumbing problems. I know because I’ve seen the disasters caused not out of malice, but ignorance. Even with the best intentions, mistakes aren’t the exception. They’re the rule when it comes to unlicensed people fixing small problems that become major problems. Then major problems become disasters, such as having your home flooded and your furnishings ruined.” “As Master Plumbers, my brother Chris, my son Luke, and I have studied and trained for years to achieve this level of expertise. My son Beau is journeyman-licensed and studying hard for his master plumber license, and Jake is an apprentice close to his journeyman license. It isn’t just a textbook we have to learn. It’s hands-on, on-the-job training, day in and day out. Tight, dark crawlspaces. Places where water and electricity meet. We can handle any situation that comes our way because we understand what’s riding on our decisions—the safety of you and your family. We simply aren’t going to let things happen that might hurt you.” At Alan’s Plumbing, everyone works together to ensure your safety, starting the minute you call. “My wife Jennifer makes a friend every time she picks up the phone,” explains Alan. “She’s your first line of defense when you have a problem that needs fixing. And she’s the one who’ll dispatch a

team of real professionals to come to your house. In addition to me, my brother Chris and the boys, Jeff Johnson is journeyman licensed and has been with us for a long time, as have apprentices Jaime, Trevor and Christian. We’re a family. And you’re our family, too.” “One of the great things about serving the public for so many years is that my boys have been riding in the truck with me since they were eight and nine years old. They grew up in this business, and they know how important it is to answer to you, not a board of corporate shareholders. As a familyowned business, we can afford to keep our overhead low so we can offer you the best prices. Give us a call today and see for yourself how great safety and service can be!”

THE ONE TO SEE

HIS

GO-TO GUY

25YEARS FOR

“I

by Amy Sharp

’ve always had lousy eyesight,” says Randall Husmann. “I started wearing glasses back in 2nd grade. When we moved to Sugar Land in 1993, my wife Debbie was beginning to have issues with her eyes for the first time. She asked around for an eye doctor. Dr. Tom Arnold at Today’s Vision Sugar Land was both highly recommended and close to our house. She saw him and told me it was great. About a year later, I became a patient as well.” Just prior to moving to Sugar Land, Randall had LASIK surgery on his left eye. “It was Dr. Arnold who followed up on my eyesight after that surgery. Further down the road, it was Dr. Arnold who saw signs of cataracts in both of my eyes. He monitored them until they were at a point they needed surgery. He referred me to a specialist for the surgery, then did my follow up care afterward. My vision improved substantially. My right eye went from about 20/1000 to 20/60. I’ve also experienced the common clouded lenses after cataract surgery. Dr. Arnold again referred me to the specialist for the YAG procedure, and then took care of all follow up.” “Dr. Arnold has been my go-to guy for more than 25 years,” continues Randall. “He knows what he’s doing, and the service is good. He is personable, and that makes my visits enjoyable. He’s just someone I enjoy being around. His staff is also very helpful. I have both contact lenses and readers. They always make sure I get what I need when I need it. The service is great, and it’s a pleasure to deal Dr. Tom Arnold with them.”

18 ~ UPCLOSE ~ July 2019

Randall’s latest development with his eyes is slight macular degeneration. “Dr. Arnold told me it’s nothing to worry about right now, that we will just follow it and see if it worsens. I appreciate that he took the time to explain what was going on. I know he will stay on top of it! Debbie and I both recommend Dr. Arnold. For Debbie, he’s the only eye doctor she’s had in her adult life. And for me, he’s the only eye doctor I’ve seen since moving to Sugar Land in ‘93. He’s great!” As Randall has experienced, the entire team at Today’s Vision Sugar Land strives to provide personalized care at every level— from top-notch optometric care to certified opticians to insurance consultations to contact lenses and designer eyewear. Inspiration to Spare

by Sara Adams

“Twenty-five years ago, two incredibly heinous acts occurred. One captured the attention of the nation (O.J. Simpson) and left two people dead. The other captured the hearts of my family and left a formally healthy little girl with the inability to communicate with anything but her beautiful blue eyes and a smile that could light up even the darkest of rooms. Unfortunately, neither crime ever found justice for the victims. But the story of Amanda is one that will inspire, transform and show the world the value of every individual.”

I

f you are having a bad day, feel like you have nothing special to offer anyone or need inspiration, then read Gwyn Thorn’s book: Love Blue – Amanda’s Story. The story begins in the fall of 1994 when Amanda suffered unspeakable acts of violence at the tender age of 3½ leaving her without the ability to verbalize her needs and totally dependent on others. Led by faith, Gwyn’s daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Paul Withey, became Amanda’s foster parents and later officially adopted this young girl who owned their hearts the minute they met her. Love Blue is described by William C. Thurman, Esq., former Prosecuting Attorney Upshur County, West Virginia, as a “profoundly heartwarming saga of a young couple who stepped up ‘to do the right thing’ for the right reasons…” Often when something devastating happens it’s easy to focus on what has been lost. Amanda didn’t dwell on what might have been but used what she had. Through the love and support of her new family and extended families, she didn’t just live, she thrived. The story details the relationship between a grandmother and granddaughter. It highlights the effect Amanda had on everyone through her beautiful blue eyes – the window to her soul – and smile. As Gwyn writes, “It may seem strange, but from the first time I held Amanda in my arms, I had pretend conversations with her…I knew she couldn’t respond with words, but the expression on her face told me what she was thinking…her eyes and smile were her tools for communicating, and she used them to let us know she was fully aware and comprehended everything that was going on around her.” It was during Amanda’s 16th birthday party, after hearing others express their gratitude for how she changed their lives, that the idea of the book took hold. As she watched her granddaughter’s eyes light up with every tribute, Gwyn promised herself “that no matter what it took, I would chronicle the years of this remarkable young woman and share the journey that was her life.” Through perseverance, dedication and love, Gwyn kept her promise. International lecturer on the art of storytelling and author James Bonnet wrote, “Gwyn Thorn is among the best and most accomplished of the emerging new writers and story makers I’ve encountered. Her extraordinary memoir, Love Blue – Amanda’s Story, is a very compelling and deeply moving true story...and would make a very inspiring film.” Kirkus Reviews said: “A touching nonfiction work about an extraordinary girl that will make people rethink the limitations of disabled people...An account by a gifted author that contrasts the best and worst of humanity and shows the sublime power of a simple smile.” If you would like to schedule Gwyn Thorn for an event, she can be reached at: 713-446-8423 or gwynt101@gmail.com. THE PLUMBING FIXTURES

YOU WANT RIGHT HERE LOCALLY by Amy Sharp

“M

oore Supply Company has the plumbing fixtures people are looking for today,” says Kimberly Degner, owner of Designs by Kimberly. “My clients see fixtures they love on Houzz and Pinterest, but for many it’s tough to spend the money and order them. People want to touch and feel the fixtures—up close and personal— before they buy. Moore Supply Company provides this service. I’m a huge fan of their showroom, and I’m a loyal customer.” Designs by Kimberly is a full-service construction and remodeling company. “I do everything from 3D drawings for design to remodeling bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor patios or whatever is needed,” says Kimberly. “Many of my projects are Greatwood, Richmond and Sugar Land homes that just need a facelift after 20 years.” “Since I do both design and installation, I utilize Moore Supply Company as a vendor in two capacities,” continues Kimberly. “First, as I’ve said, they have a great showroom. I can bring my clients in to do all of their plumbing fixture shopping. Or, if I know what my clients like, I can stop in with a client wishlist.

Moore Supply Company helps me price things out, and we see what we can do.” Moore Supply Company was established in 1953 in nearby Conroe and is a subsidiary of Hajoca Corporation,

the largest privately held plumbing distributor in the country. Profit Center Manager Shane Southworth says, “Here at our Stafford location, we carry plumbing fixtures in every price range—from the simple to the high end—and styles range from traditional to contemporary and everything in between. You’re also invited to work one-on-one with one of our professional consultants. Our showroom consultant, Dottie Duhe, has been doing this for 30 years, and Jessica Campbell is here to help too. Utilizing our resources will help you avoid costly pitfalls in typical bathroom and kitchen remodels. We’ll help you create the extraordinary home of your dreams.” All team members at Moore Supply Company participate in a profitsharing program. “I particularly like this,” says Kimberly, “because it means great customer service. Everyone that works there has a vested interest. This is just something you don’t see every day, especially in plumbing supply. But it makes a world of difference. Moore Supply Company is a very solid company.” To learn more about Designs by Kimberly, contact Kimberly at 832-578-2499 or kimberly@designsbykimberly.com. It’s Not Just a Pool... It’s a Family EXPERIENCE!

hen Matt and Gail Kilboy moved into their home nearly 20 years ago, Matt assured Gail they would never have a pool. “But never is a long time,” says Matt. “When I started researching pool companies, I literally felt like there were hundreds of options out there. We included Bratton Pools in the initial round of estimates because they had done a friend’s pool, the Bratton family attends our church, and our daughters go to school together. From there, Bratton Pools certainly earned our business. They were comparable in scope, responsiveness and pricing...and we placed them in our top three. The deciding element was we wanted to deal with a local, family-based company. We felt they would be more responsive and help walk us through this journey.” The first part of that journey was design. “We did not have a solid vision,” says Matt. “So Bratton Pools stepped up to the table with designs, and we tweaked them with our input. The 3D design software was effective, and became really meaningful when selecting tiles and visualizing color selections.” Through the use of 3D CAD (computer-aided design) modeling tools, the Kilboys were able to see their design come to life, a design that included a new pool with a raised waterfall wall and Antigua Pebble Plaster, a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen and a travertine deck. “Construction went as scheduled,” continues Matt. “Every journey has a couple of twists and turns along the way. These were 22 ~ UPCLOSE ~ July 2019

well communicated. In the end, there were very few surprises. We had hired another contractor to do our patio cover. Bratton Pools cooperated and effectively worked in conjunction with that contractor. In fact, I believe they exchanged business cards to possibly collaborate on projects in the future!” Locally-owned by Mike and Kryshon Bratton and Brent Appelt, Bratton Pools maintains an A+ rating with the BBB. They do pool construction and renovation, as well as full outdoor space planning and construction. But that’s just shop talk...what they really do is turn “inside people” into “outside people.” Mike Bratton says, “We hear it all the time after completing projects. Clients say they love to come home from work and soak or swim, or enjoy the view and the sounds of their waterfall in the cooler months. Instead of video games and TV, the kids are inviting friends over for a great time in their ‘fun’ backyard.” The Kilboy family agrees! “We don’t just love our pool. We love the entire experience of our backyard. We find ourselves in the pool every evening as a family. It’s an incredible experience!” Bratton Pools & Outdoor Living 281-988-7700 Design Center 403 S 5th Street #B, Richmond, TX 77469 www.brattonpools.com

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

Feeling Blessed

R

by Sara Adams

everend Canon Owen Barker is a member of The Missionary Society of St. Francis of Assisi. He belongs to a larger religious organization, the International Communion of Orthodox Episcopal Charismatic Churches, which allows him to connect with people from many different cultures around the world. He has worked as an urban missionary throughout the United States for over forty years. He likes to say, “I’m not big on titles or even labels; so, just call me Owen.” Early in 2014, Owen realized there was something seriously wrong with his legs. He says, “I had been going from one doctor to another attempting to find relief from my neuropathy (numbness) which started on the bottom of my feet, penetrated to my calves, later to my knees and then to my thighs. It was so bad that I couldn’t feel the brakes or the accelerator pedal with my foot.” Owen’s neuropathy kept him from driving for 3.5 years. He relied on his wife, friends, and even Uber to take him from place to place. All that changed when his friend, Archbishop Christopher Caros, suggested he call Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center. Dr. Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982 and has been in practice for over 40 years. Known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers gentle chiropractic care. Through his years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. His natural, noninvasive, gentle approach promotes relief from pain. Owen says, “I want to thank everyone at Sugar Land Health Center. Dr. Harris and his staff are very knowledgeable, they offer high quality medical service and cutting-edge technology. With Dr. Harris’s help, I was able to safely reduce my medication from 16 prescriptions to 7 and I lost 31 pounds on their weight loss program. By the end of twelve weeks I regained 95% of the feeling in my feet and legs. I can now feel the brake and accelerator pedals in my car. It is so exciting to be able to drive again! I can go anywhere and stay as long as I need to stay without interrupting anyone else’s schedule. Before I started working with Dr. Harris, I could only walk about fifty feet. Now, I start my day early, walking three miles before going to work or beginning my prayer/quiet time. Dr. Harris has been a blessing in my life.”
