Advancing Community Health

r. Daniel A. Nwachokor is proud to be practicing in the community where he grew up. Board certified in family medicine, he serves as the medical director at Community Health and Life Center. The office is located on the campus of Memorial Hermann Sugar Land in Medical Plaza #1, a short drive from the house where he grew up, and where his parents still reside. Dr. Nwachokor’s parents fondly recall him as an inquisitive child, full of energy. That innate curiosity led him to develop a love for science in elementary school that put him on the path toward a career in medicine: “I remember competing in the school science fair every year – I enjoyed both the process and participation,” he said. “Later I joined the Boy Scouts of America which taught me character, leadership, and a sense of community. I am a proud Eagle Scout and appreciate all of the life skills I learned in scouting.” With
that foundation, Dr. Nwachokor entered high school knowing a profession involving service to others was right for him. “I had many memorable experiences in the Hightower High School (FBISD) Medical Science Academy,” he recalled. He went on to complete his undergraduate degree in biological sciences at Grambling State University. Dr. Nwachokor then earned his Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his residency training at Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in Sugar Land, TX. Now, his patients range “from newborns to seniors” and his clinical interests include preventative medicine, chronic disease management, and nutrition counseling. Patients
appreciate his genuine concern and his clear and concise communication. The office also recently added a family dietitian (Alisa) as well as a Spanish-speaking family nurse practitioner (Carmen). “We offer extended office hours, accept all major insurances, and have a patient portal for 24-hour online access to your health information,” he said. Dr. Nwachokor has a passion for community service and training future health professionals. “I am active in numerous local, state, and national professional & philanthropic organizations,” he said. Dr. Nwachokor enjoys spending time with his family as well as swimming, golf, and traveling. Learn more by following Community Health and Life Center on Instagram, Facebook, and Google.

An INTERDENOMINATIONAL Women’s Bible Study
with aWORLDWIDE Following Right Here in Sugar Land
N
by Amy Sharp
early 30 years ago, Mary Willis started an interdenominational Bible Study for women at First Baptist Church of Sugar Land. Over the years, this group has grown to include more than 500 members and changed locations a few times to accommodate this growth. Today, Merry Ministries meets Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings in the sanctuary at Sugar Land First United Methodist Church. “This is not topical Bible studies,” says Mary. “This is pure Bible, for hope and encouragement. We keep the denominational
differences out. I often joke that I’m a Baptist teaching Catholics in a Methodist church. But in all honesty, our attendees are of all faiths: Church of Christ, Presbyterian, Lutheran and Jewish faith are among our members.” A Merry Ministries session kicks off with a time of music led by the praise and worship team. Then Mary does her lesson. She says, “I often start out with a joke, and the atmosphere is light-hearted. I like to include humor to keep everyone’s attention. Then we transition into a more serious but not dry study. Our purpose is threefold: biblical knowledge, practical application and changed lives. After the lesson,
we break out into Bible fellowship groups. It’s an opportunity to connect with other members, discuss the lesson, and pray. Week to week, our lessons go straight through the Bible. This fall, we are starting at the beginning with Genesis. It takes a while (years!) to get through the Bible, but we just finished in May...and 125 of our more than 500 members were with us from Genesis to Revelation.” As Merry Ministries grew, Mary started broadcasting her lessons in both audio and video on iTunes, Vimeo and her website. “It allows members that miss a session to catch up,” says Mary. “Many men also follow us electronically, as well as individuals from afar.” Recently, the “Word of Promise” app—an audio Bible—picked up Merry Ministries. Today, men and women in more than 80 countries tune in to learn from Mary on their smartphones and tablets! In addition to Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning sessions, Merry Ministries does four events a year: a friends day, a Christmas party, a Valentine’s party and an end of year party. Mary says, “During these events, we encourage our members to invite someone new. Of course, all are welcome any time of year!” Mary has also taken groups of Merry Ministries members to Israel over the years, and has a trip to Greece, ”The Travels of Paul,” coming up this year. Merry Ministries Bible study lessons are free of charge and free childcare is available. For more information about Mary and Merry Ministries, visit www.merryministries.com.

orraine and Boyd Parker will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this November. Over the course of their marriage they have logged a lot of miles together, lived overseas, raised four children, and welcomed four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. After 21 years of service, Boyd retired from the United States Air Force and the Parkers moved with their children to Stafford in 1972 where they lived until 1989. Retiring to the Canyon Lake area, Lorraine and Boyd eventually took up RVing. Their trips included traveling with some of their siblings and spouses to visit other brothers and sisters across the country. The Parkers found an excellent way to see the country and keep up with their family. Along the way, Lorraine became active with the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center, donating her time and talent sewing quilts and bags for children receiving services. Her quilts were beautiful and well-made; offering comfort and warmth in a time of need. Lorraine estimates that she made a minimum of five quilts a month for seven years. Three years ago, Lorraine and Boyd moved back to Stafford to be closer to their children and their families. Moving did not stop Lorraine’s love for quilting. With a real eye for color and a joy for creating, Lorraine continues to keep busy making quilts and bags for friends and family. Before moving back to Stafford, Lorraine’s biggest concern was having to change doctors. With a history of blood clots and a diagnosis of chronic deep vein thrombosis (DVT), Lorraine wanted to be sure she would receive the same level of care that she had received in the past. After a referral to see Dr. Ulises Baltazar, Lorraine’s fears disappeared. Dr. Ulises Baltazar is a highly regarded vein specialist. He has extensive experience working with conditions resulting from issues of the circulatory system and is a leader in his field. Boardcertified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr.
Ulises Baltazar MD, RVT, FACS now affiliated with the renowned Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates 281-240-8400 16605 Southwest Freeway Ste 505 (in the Methodist Professional Building 3) 4 ~ UPCLOSE ~ August 2019

Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. Lorraine says, “As soon as he walked in the room, I felt so at ease. And when he said, ‘I’ll take good care of you,’ I believed him. Dr. Baltazar is the only doctor who has ever prayed with me before surgery. That meant a lot to me.” Dr. Baltazar was able to help Lorraine manage her cellulitis and improve circulation in her left leg, sometimes even coordinating treatment plans with her other specialists in the area. With Dr. Baltazar on her team, Lorraine knew she really had come home.

A New Solution for Your Scars
A
re you made self-conscious or uncomfortable by the appearance of your scars? Are you looking forward to sleeveless tops and shorter hemlines this summer, or are you already worried about exposing your scars? Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph. at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy in Sugar Land says, “We believe deeply in solving problems for our patients whether we’re compounding an anti-nausea cream, filling a prescription for blood pressure medication, or offering an over-the-counter product designed to address scarring like Advanced Praxi-Gel.” Life events like pregnancy, teenage acne, surgeries, accidents, or even dermatological conditions like skin spots, psoriasis, and rosacea all leave their marks on your skin. Dr. Campbell says, “Our life experiences make us stronger, but we don’t have to carry them on our face or body. Advanced Praxi-Gel has been designed to help soften, smooth, flatten, lighten and dramatically improve the overall appearance of scars, even keloid scars. The gel contains Pracaxi oil, derived from the seed of the Pracaxi tree found in the Amazon rainforest. This unique ingredient has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.” You don’t have to be “scarred for life” by the appearance of your scars. Take action to combat your scar tissue and restore your self-confidence. After a surgery or injury, you could use Advanced Praxi-Gel to reduce inflammation and the buildup of scar tissue. Dr. Campbell says, “Advanced Praxi-Gel is available over the counter at Campbell’s Compounding...no prescription needed. If you have pain or itching associated with your scar, we can compound a solution to address your issues. We’re pleased to offer such a customizable and user-friendly scar-reducing treatment for adults and children alike!” “Campbell’s Compounding is proud to be a pharmacy that cares for you and your family

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: 5 Facts About Insurance and the ER by Olivia Cane
N
St. Michael’s accepts more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. Your insurance MUST pay in-network benefits at the ER of YOUR CHOICE whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “out-of-network.” At this time St. Michael’s, due to governmental bureaucratic decisions, is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.
o one who goes to an emergency room should have to wait. Just as importantly, no one who goes to an emergency room should have to worry whether their insurance will cover the visit. What’s essential is getting an accurate diagnosis and making sure you start feeling a whole lot better. These are the bedrock principles that Dr. Shannon Orsak and his brother, Brian Orsak, co-founders of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, live by. “Back in 2007, we created the first free-standing, 24-hour ER in Sugar Land,” explains Dr. Orsak. “We are first and foremost a family service, and it’s important to us that our neighbors we serve understand that there are myths about emergency room care and the role your insurance plays in making sure you’re covered.”
5. Myth: Free-standing emergency rooms turn patients away. Free-standing Emergency Centers licensed by the State of Texas cannot turn patients away in an emergency. They are required to accept all patients, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay, which is something the providers at St. Michael’s would gladly do, even if it weren’t required. In actuality, patients are sometimes turned away from big hospitals. “At St. Michael’s,” says Dr. Orsak, “we offer the very best care, the kind we’d provide for our own families. Come in, and you’ll immediately notice the difference.”
Here are the facts you need to know:
1. Myth: Free-standing emergency rooms are “out-of-network.” According to the law, all emergency patients with insurance have their ER care covered because insurance carriers must apply benefits using “in-network” cost sharing provisions, so technically they are in-network with provider. 2. Fact: If a person thinks they are having a medical emergency—based solely on their symptoms—then it shall be treated as an emergency by their insurance company, and thus, appropriately covered and paid. St. Michael’s fights for you against the insurance companies regularly to make sure you are treated fairly. 3. Fact: In-network does not necessarily mean less expense to you than out-of-network. This is very important for everyone to know. 4. Myth: Free-standing emergency rooms are more expensive than hospital ERs. Most free-standing emergency rooms are less expensive, including St. Michael’s, and we make sure you are attended to quickly.

oe Anzaldua MD, PA, FAAFP of OakBend Medical Group Sugar Land Family Practice is optometrist Dr. Tom Arnold’s primary care doctor. “I got to know Dr. Arnold as his doctor years ago,” says Dr. Anzaldua. “I really enjoy his demeanor and personality. He’s an outgoing person and very positive. When I happened to be looking for a change in eye care, I remember thinking he was the kind of person I wanted.” More than 10 years later, these two are still both doctor and patient (and friend!) to each other. “My wife Julie and my son Andrew also see Dr. Arnold,” says Dr. Anzaldua. “When we have eye exams, he is a great conversationalist. We feel right at home...it isn’t a quick in and out. Dr. Arnold answers all questions, and explains the different examinations he does. He is a very professional and patient man. I also purchase my glasses from the optical department at Today’s Vision Sugar Land. The optical staff is very knowledgeable in finding frames that fit the face. Sometimes it seems I try on 30 pair (though I know it’s probably only 7 or 8!). I never feel rushed, and I appreciate that the staff makes recommendations while also understanding the decision is mine.” Today’s Vision Sugar Land has been providing this level of care to our community since 1992. The entire team—including optometrists Dr. Arnold, Dr. Joseph A. Janes, Dr. Jocelyn S. Horiszny and Dr. Kristyn Reed—is committed to offering the best of optometric care, designer eyewear and contact lenses. The more we have, the more we can target treatment.” And as Dr. Anzaldua has witnessed, Dr. Arnold and his team are always game for explaining each examination so that you can understand what is going on with your eyes. At OakBend Medical Group Sugar Land Family Practice, Dr. Anzaldua sees patients of all ages. “Kids and adults,” says Dr. Anzaldua. “I used to see Dr. Arnold’s daughter Meredith when she lived here. oots. We typically think of them as the part of a plant that attaches to the ground and conveys water and nourishment to the rest of the plant. But there are plenty of folks who believe that roots are more than just botanical...they’re the lifeblood that establishes you deeply and firmly to a place. And for Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. in Stafford, that place is our beloved Texas. “I’m proud to be a native Texan,” explains Dr. Lomonte. “I grew up in Beaumont, received my undergraduate degree from Lamar University, and my Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. My kids were raised here, and since I’ve been practicing at this same location since 1982, I’m now seeing second and third generations of patients. It’s a wonderful feeling—a family feeling—when I watch patients grow up and then bring their own kids in to see me. At our office, new patients are always treated like family. Because if experience has taught me anything, it’s that while knowing ‘how’ to do your job is certainly important...it’s knowing your patients that truly makes the difference.” What that means is taking every patient’s comfort level into account, even if that patient hasn’t sat in a dental chair for twenty years. “What’s great about working with new patients, especially ones who haven’t seen a dentist in quite a while, is showing them how stress-free modern dental care is,” says Dr. Lomonte. “No matter the procedure—whether you’re getting a root canal, some fantastic new advances in straightening like Invisalign, or even a cosmetic service like porcelain veneers—it is virtually painless. When there’s nothing to stress out about, you can actually relax and maybe even have fun!” Dr. Lomonte would like to extend a warm Thomas M. Lomonte, D.D.S. welcome to you. “Your smile is our number one “Come in as a patient, leave as a friend.” priority. I would love for you to join our family.” 281-530-1440 12122 Murphy Rd., Stafford, TX 77477 www.drthomaslomonte.com

What Would You Do if YouWeren’t Afraid? by Amy Sharp
Dr. Makala M. Austin, LCSW first became intrigued with counseling when she saw the TV sitcom Frasier as a teen. “I loved the premise of talking through different things. In my adult life, my husband Roderick and I have traveled a lot with our time in the military. I’ve seen many families struggling, there is really a strong need for counseling.” Life steered Dr. Austin’s career into Human Resources, until a fateful stop in Norfolk, VA where an old friend convinced her to pursue her counseling dream. Degree in hand, Dr. Austin quickly became an accomplished therapist. Her resume includes a federal fellowship working with active duty soldiers and their families and a stint as a university level counselor. It was her husband’s retirement from the military that brought Dr. Austin to Roderick’s home state of Texas. With positions in multiple major area medical centers, the prospect of private practice lingered. “I was afraid,” says Dr. Austin. “Then I read Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. The premise of the book is, ‘What would you do if you weren’t afraid?’ I always tell my patients to take risks and live out their dreams. The book made me realize that I needed to do the same!” At Wellness with Dr. Austin, Dr. Austin offers three modes of therapy: tele-health (secure, HIPAAcompliant video therapy), walk and talk therapy (just meet Dr. Austin at a local park and take a walk with her), or a traditional office setting. Every session starts with an initial psychological evaluation. “I want you to get the services you need,” says Dr. Austin. “Even if it’s not from me. You decide after that first session if you want to come back...if you are comfortable sharing intimate details of your life with me. Counseling is important. Too many quit because they don’t care for the first counselor they meet.” Dr. Austin is trained in cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma informed, solution focus, narrative therapy, behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy alongside a host of other methodologies. If you’re looking for a non-judgmental practitioner who is client-centered and will try their hardest to assist you with accomplishing mental health stability and desired life goals...Dr. Austin is your therapist. Unfortunately, R22 is a substance that’s being phased out worldwide due to its harmful effects on the environment. R22 will become illegal to manufacture or import into the United States as of January 1, 2020. “I know how tempting it is to avoid replacing your old air conditioning system,” says Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat, which has been serving Sugar Land and Fort Bend County since 1982. “Especially if you already know your unit has a refrigerant leak, you may be trying to decide how long you can get by before having to invest in a new system. DONATE S by Amy Sharp ince 1980, Fort Bend Women’s Center (FBWC or Women’s Center) has been the voice for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in this community. As the only Fort Bend County provider of free, integral support services for survivors, FBWC provides 24 hour emergency shelter and a crisis hotline, as well as long term support services including: counseling, case management, legal advocacy, employment and education assistance, children’s services, rape crisis services, rental assistance and transportation. These services help save lives every single day. Donations to Pennywise Resale Stores, which is owned and operated by FBWC, are vital to FBWC. Joy Dowell, Chief Retail Operations Officer for the Fort Bend Women’s Center, says, “Last year, FBWC transitioned 1289 women and children into safety. The key component of the FBWC mission is to keep these ladies and their children safe and help them to become self sufficient. Your donations help in three ways. Some clients have nothing. We provide them with gift cards to shop in our Pennywise stores, allowing them to make their own choices and maintain confidentiality. For clients who are ready to move on to independence and are free from abuse, these donations assist in furnishing their home and setting up a household...including couches, tables, linens, lamps, dishes, etc. Everything else is sold in our Pennywise stores and the net proceeds go to programs to support our clients.”

arbara Brandes and Catherine Knesek have been friends since high school. For the past five years and counting, they have spent three hours a week volunteering together at the Pennywise Resale Store in Richmond. Joy Dowell, Chief Retail Operations Officer for the Fort Bend Women’s Center, says, “Our volunteers are our ‘Stars.’ We couldn’t do it without them. They’re vital to FBWC because they are the labor necessary to process our donations. Volunteering is very fulfilling. It’s a great way to make new friends, or like Barbara and Catherine, it’s an amazing way to spend quality time with lifelong friends. We’re not asking for heavy labor. We have opportunities on the sales floor to price and sort jewelry, work behind the jewelry counter, hang clothes, and many others. hristin and Monica Norris have lived in their home for 10 years. “We spend a lot of time outside,” says Christin. “We love it...making fires, grilling and swimming. Two years ago, I started looking into upgrading the pool. I found Bratton Pools & Outdoor Living on Facebook and started to follow them. I saw amazing backyards they had done, and also had Facebook ‘conversations’ with Mike Bratton. For two years I waited for the ‘right time’ to move forward, but with the pool falling apart I was tired of waiting. I finally called Mike.” Bratton Pools & Outdoor Living is locally owned by Mike and Kryshon Bratton and Brent Appelt. Mike visited Christin and Monica’s home a couple of times to discuss what they wanted in their backyard. “Mike is super nice and helpful,” says Christin. “And his Facebook page really shows off amazing work. I honestly didn’t have the urge to turn to anyone else to bid on the work. When Monica and I visited their Design Center, we added in stuff. The price went up. Then we took things out and it went down. Since we use our backyard a lot, we ultimately decided to get everything we wanted. It was 100% worth it.” The work in the Norris’ backyard included new plaster, tile and travertine coping for the 15-year-old pool. That same travertine was carried under the covered patio and up to the door to the house. Holes were drilled into the travertine for umbrellas. The pool equipment system was replaced with an automated system that can be controlled from a smartphone. A new pool cleaner was added. All pool lighting

was replaced with 5-color LEDs. The hardiplank under the covered patio ceiling was replaced with cedar planks and a custom cedar beam was added. The can lights were changed to LED, a ceiling fan was added, and electricity for a TV. The sprinkler system around the entire house was upgraded, and Christin and Monica also added a pergola in the open area that houses an outdoor kitchen complete with a grill and sink. “Our entire backyard was made over!” says Christin. “Right down to new sod since they had to tear everything up to run plumbing, electricity and the new sprinklers. I texted Mike many times during the construction process. I’m an engineer and admittedly not a patient person. I pick everything apart. Mike was like a friend, always patient and explaining things. The typical stuff you run into during construction happened, including the weather being a factor. But we wanted to be ready for a Memorial Day party and they hit that deadline. I was very happy with the construction process.” Monica and Christin love their new backyard. “We’ve always loved it anyway,” says Christin. “But now it’s 100 times better. It looks like a completely different house. Now it looks more like a retreat...absolutely beautiful! I definitely recommend Bratton Pools & Outdoor Living.” Bratton Pools & Outdoor Living 281-988-7700 Design Center 403 S 5th Street #B, Richmond, TX 77469 www.brattonpools.com

Imelda’s Insight
“Now that so many of us are using dishwashers, natural cleaners or grandma’s remedies like white vinegar, you may not keep a pair of rubber gloves by the kitchen sink. Did you know those old-fashioned rubber gloves are a cheap and easy way to remove pet hair from your sofas, chairs, cars and trucks? Talk about your simple, triedand-true solutions! Pick up an ordinary pair of rubber gloves from the cleaning aisle at your grocery, big box store, or even the dollar store. Slide them on and run your hands over your sofa, chair, or car interior. The fur should lift and stick to the glove. Submerge your hands in water and the pet fur will come right off the gloves and float on the surface for you to scoop up and toss. No muss, no fuss, and (most importantly) no more fur!”

ugh and Elaine Burton’s home was built in 2003. When they decided it was time to remodel their master bathroom, they called locallyowned Lone Star Floors. “Lone Star Floors has been around a number of years,” says Hugh. “And we had used them in the past for flooring. We were completely satisfied. I also have friends who have used them as well as our adult children. Everyone has been happy with them. I understood that they also do bathroom remodeling, so I called to inquire. They came out to talk, gave an estimate, and we went with them based on our past experience.” The Burton’s bathroom remodel included a new shower and tub, new vanities, flooring and light fixtures. “The only thing that stayed was the medicine cabinet!” says Hugh. “Ziad Mukhaimer, one of the owners, was our project manager. He helped quite a bit with showing us materials and making sure everything coordinated. We went with tile that looks like wood, white vanities, and white patterned tile in the bath and shower with beige and gray accents. Ziad also accompanied us to Home Depot to pick faucets, etc.” During construction, Elaine and Hugh moved to a back bedroom. “Our crew was very professional and here when they said they would be here. They were particular about cleaning up and the time estimate was pretty well right on. When we wanted to use our own painter—a company that had painted for us in the past—Lone Star Floors had no problem with that and worked to coordinate schedules to get the bathroom done. We are very happy with our finished bathroom. It looks really nice and all of our friends rave about it. I do recommend Lone Star Floors!” Ziad owns Lone Star Floors together with his cousins Mohamed Naser and Imad Mansour. This trio opened their first location right here in Sugar Land more than 30 years ago. As Hugh discovered, in addition to flooring they also do full bathroom and kitchen remodeling. ou may not realize it, but there’s a war being waged right inside your attic—a war between water and electricity. “These are two things that must be left in the hands of a professional,” says Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing. “Dealing with water and electricity is extremely dangerous, which is why for leaks, problems and inspections, you need a highly-trained, highly-skilled professional plumber...not someone who just ‘does plumbing’ on the side.” “Your air conditioner’s condensate line is a good example. Condensate (liquid waste) from your air-cooling coils, air washers, evaporative coolers—any water-supplied equipment—is actually a plumbing (not an HVAC) matter. This liquid has to be collected and discharged using an approved plumbing fixture made of corrosion-resistant material. The waste pipe has to slope less than 1/8th of an inch per foot and then directed away from the house per wastewater codes. This is not a job for someone who doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing. And if one of these lines springs a leak, it can be catastrophic. Not only will your house flood, but you’ll have water and electricity loose upstairs.” The potential hazards don’t stop there. The foundation of your house is full of pipes—pipes that bend and contract as the soil around your foundation dries out over the summer. Spring a leak and the dial on your water meter will start spinning like a pinwheel, which means skyhigh water bills. Fortunately, Alan Burkhalter, his brother Chris, and Alan’s son Luke are all Master Plumbers. Luke’s brother Beau is currently journeyman-licensed and close to achieving his Master Plumber license as well. Long-time employee Jeff Johnson is also journeyman-licensed, and apprentices Jake Burkhalter, Jaime, Christian and Trevor are working toward their journeyman licenses. in a technologically complicated business where one wrong move can put an entire household in jeopardy. “I’ve actually seen condensate lines left to drain in handyman buckets in people’s attics,” says Alan. “Your family’s safety is our first priority, along with saving you the most amount of money and making sure we do the best job possible. We’re not a nameless, faceless national corporation. We’re a family business that honors and respects family. Yours and mine. We wouldn’t be the multi-generational family-owned business we are without giving you our best.” “Give us a call! We’ll show you what family means.”

THE END of SUMMER

ugar Land Baptist Church Senior Pastor Dr. Taylor Sandlin says, “Summer is a wonderful opportunity to see family and celebrate travel. This is all important. I wouldn’t begrudge this opportunity to anyone. I enjoy traveling with my wife and kids too. It’s not a bad thing, and I know during this time sometimes church takes a backseat. As we enter August and the next chapter—back to school—I would like to invite you all to kick off the fall semester with Sugar Land Baptist Church.” Sugar Land Baptist’s new season of activities starts with Welcome Home Sunday on August 25th. Taylor says, “Welcome Home Sunday is a more casual Sunday and includes a meal. We have Bible study at 8:30am and 11:00am, and of course our Sunday worship service at 9:45am. Everyone is invited to a Bible study and/or attend our worship...and then to stay for lunch afterward. The meal starts right at 11. Many in our congregation traveled for most of the summer and this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect and recommit to worship each week. If you are looking for a good church home, Welcome Home Sunday is a great time to test drive our church and see if it’s a place you want to call home. We also start new Sunday school classes on Welcome Home Sunday. While your child is always welcome to join Sunday school any time of the year, this is an opportunity to be a member of a class from the beginning.” Welcome Home Sunday also kicks off all fall activities at Sugar Land Baptist Church. Every
Wednesday evening there’s a slate of ministries for adults and students. Adult groups include grief support, financial responsibility, traditional Bible study, and music ministry rehearsals. For students and teenagers, there’s also Bible study and music ministry. Taylor says, “Our music ministry can be a great introduction to music education. And because we know Wednesday evenings can be hectic for our families, we also provide a meal for
your convenience from 5-6pm. The cost is $6/ person and we do need a reservation. Join us for dinner...then most of our ministries start right at 6.” The end of summer marks the beginning of a new season. At Sugar Land Baptist Church it’s a new season of activities aimed at helping you and your family grow in faith. We’ll see you at Welcome Home Sunday!

ASK MARGIE The Lawyer Who Cares
THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:
Estate Planning by Amy Sharp
S
A Peaceful Set of Circumstances for this Senior Citizen
eventy-two year old Anne Higgins is the facilitator for the J.O.Y (Just Older Youth) Club at St. Laurence Catholic Church. A couple years back, Anne asked Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly to speak to the J.O.Y. Club about wills and trusts. “These old people will really put you on the spot with questions,” says Anne. “And boy howdy, Margie did great! So wonderful that a year later I asked her back just so the club could ask more questions about their estate plans.” “Everyone likes Margie,” continues Anne. “And several of our members have engaged her professionally, including myself. My original will was something I had seen on TV. I answered a few questions, and they sent it to me in the mail. But my kids lost their dad about a year ago, and after that experience I wanted to make sure my will was updated and in order. Margie has gone over my will and doctored it. She explains everything so that I can understand. I
often find myself telling people to ‘Speak English!’ after giving their spiel...and some can’t! But Margie can. It was a very peaceful set of circumstances when I was able to let my children know that my funeral is set, my legal matters are in order, and that I have a great lawyer.” One of the J.O.Y. Club members is also a member of a senior group at another church. She recently asked Anne for Margie’s contact information so that Margie can talk to them about estate planning as well. Anne recommends Margie for both group discussions and as a personal attorney. “When she asked me to speak on her behalf, I said, ‘Hot damn, of course I’ll do it!’ Margie’s great. It’s all worked out very well. I’m very blessed!”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS, DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
NO MORE Back Pain in the Way

athy Jones loves to travel to far off places. She has been to Budapest, Switzerland and Paris to name a few of her destinations. “When I am no longer able to travel great distances, I will visit places closer to home,” she says. Recently retired after more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry, Cathy is looking forward to being able to travel even more. Concerned about the nagging pain that normally accompanies long periods of sitting on an airplane and carrying luggage from terminal to terminal, Cathy, who has suffered from back problems for the past 20 years, decided to seek help before leaving the country. Being proactive, Cathy says, “I knew that if I did not address the problem soon, it would escalate and the results could become debilitating. I think of it like the light in my car coming on indicating I need to add air to the tires. It is not an immediate need; but the sooner I address it, the less consequences there are.” In the past, Cathy addressed her back pain with monthly massages and sporadic chiropractic visits. In April of this year, Cathy discovered Dr. Steve Harris and her outlook on travel and the care of her back just got sunnier. Dr. Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982 and has been in practice for over 40 years. Known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers gentle chiropractic care. Through his years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body to promote healing. His natural, effective, gentle approach promotes relief from pain. “I was so pleased to meet Dr. Harris and his team,” says Cathy. “They are friendly and welcoming. Dr Harris discussed treatment that would address the cause of my problem, not just the symptoms.
