A Work of Art Imagine a place

where you can hang out with friends and try cool wines without intimidation. A lounge community with a “non-judgy” vibe. No TVS, no clocks...just fun! This is what Paul and Nichole Killingsworth have created with Fort Bend’s own, Vino & Vinyl. Paul says, “Many years ago, Nichole and I went to a local wine bar and were told to go to the back of the line until we found something we liked. We were young and inexperienced, and didn’t feel welcome. Vino & Vinyl is different. Here, what we want is for you to have an ‘a-ha’ moment with wine. Something so incredible...something you’ve never had before. We help you through that process.” It’s a concept that works. Nichole and Paul—a certified sommelier—first opened the Missouri City Vino & Vinyl as a wine shop and record store. But when they learned customers wanted to stay and hang out…they converted to an incredibly successful wine bar. Last month, Vino & Vinyl’s second location opened in Sugar Land’s Town Square. “Our wines are from small family producers,” continues Paul. “Wines you just can’t get in a grocery store. We love the ‘New California,’ where the wine is in more of a ‘French’ style. All of them are handmade and many are organic and sustainably grown. The best wines are a true sense of someone’s farming…because the farmers are the real stars. Small vineyards have a voice—a character of their own— and the best wines let that voice shine through. We don’t want it manipulated with artificial flavors and colors and fake acids and tannins.” Vino & Vinyl is a true work of art. In addition to the best wine, local art is featured on the walls and you’ll hear the best vinyl music around. Paul grew up in a musical family and was a professional bass player out of college. “We choose artists that

by Amy Sharp create a good lounge environment. Some of the old stuff, but also lots of independents not on the radio.” Have some of your own favorites? Wednesday is BYOV (bring your own vinyl) night! This artful intersection of great wine and music would not be complete without fabulous food. At the Town Square location, seasoned world traveler chef Tori Bergersen has created a bistro menu that pairs well with wine and pays homage to the diversity of Fort Bend County. In addition to cheese and meat boards (that are served on hand-crafted wood by Paul’s father), diners will find an Asian inspired rice bowl, an Indian-spiced appetizer, paninis, flatbreads and even an Italian cast iron skillet meatball…plus a Chef’s Feature entree every evening. In addition to fabulous wine, Vino & Vinyl serves more than 30 bottled beers. Want this wine at home? Join Club Vino and get hand selected bottles every month that fit your taste and budget, plus a free pass to the monthly pickup party, 10% off your entire bill every time you hang out at Vino & Vinyl, and an additional 10% off wines to go. Whether you step into the Missouri City or Sugar Land Vino & Vinyl, you get a real sense of community. They are in the business of converting guests into friends, and friends into family.

The Language of

Caring by Sara Adams

“She spent a lot of that time on her feet”

M

aria Hernandez is a retired teacher who spent thirty-two years teaching English and English as a Second Language to high school and middle school students. She spent a lot of that time on her feet, which may have contributed to the pain and heaviness she was feeling in her legs. Her primary physician suggested she see a vein specialist. One day, while taking her mother for a doctor’s visit, Maria read an article in the waiting room about Dr. Ulises Baltazar, a vein specialist with offices in Methodist Professional Building 3, right here in Sugar Land. She decided to call his office for an appointment. Maria was so impressed with the politeness of Dr. Baltazar’s staff and their willingness to answer her questions. They made her feel comfortable enough to take that first step and make an appointment for her initial evaluation.

Maria’s husband, Vicente, accompanied her on that first visit to see Dr. Baltazar. She says, “Dr. Baltazar made both of us feel comfortable from the very beginning. He made us feel like we could ask him any questions.” Both Maria and her husband agreed that the reason they felt so comfortable with Dr. Baltazar was that he was not talking to them, but he was talking with them. He did not overuse medical terms; instead, he used everyday language that was simple to understand. What they appreciated the most was he never pushed them to make a decision or gave them false hope about the results. Maria was able to make her decision feeling informed and confident. She opted to have her left leg treated first as it was the most problematic. She was able to have both legs treated in Dr. Baltazar’s office on separate days. The recovery was as he described and today she has no pain or heaviness in either leg. For more than ten years, Dr. Baltazar has been a highly regarded vein specialist with a reputation that goes beyond the Fort Bend County, Sugar Land area. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, and a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers as well as leg swelling. But most importantly, as Maria and her husband discovered. his expertise and empathy are easily translated into a language of caring.

Top-Notch Bedside Manner from a Top-Notch Plastic Surgeon Tiffany’s story

T

hirty-five year old Tiffany Parnell has given birth to two children via c-section. “My muscles were cut, and my stomach never tightened back up. I was getting tired of working out every single day and seeing no change in my midsection.” For 10 years, Tiffany contemplated a tummy tuck with liposuction. “You hear all these horror stories,” says Tiffany. “And I didn’t want to die.” Over the course of those 10 years, Tiffany visited two or three doctors. “They all felt wrong. I’m big on bedside manner, and when I visited those doctors I didn’t feel they were really concerned about me. They just made me feel nervous. And I needed someone local. A friend had her procedure done in the Dominican Republic. It was a great price, but when she had complications she could not go back.” Continuing her research, Tiffany found a video interview with Dr. Eric Humble of Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery on YouTube. “He just seemed like a great guy. So I called and scheduled a consultation. On that first visit, I immediately knew, ‘Boom this is my doctor!’ I was comfortable. The staff was so nice and welcoming. Dr. Humble’s bedside manner was excellent. He

made sure to address all of my questions and concerns. I scheduled the procedure. My husband was shocked...I was really going to do it!” On the day of her procedure, Tiffany found the staff just as comforting. “I was nervous, but the receptionist was very reassuring. Dr. Humble came in and said, ‘You ok? You good?’ Then he assured me it would be quick and painless and I would be out of there. And he was right!” After the procedure, Dr. Humble continuously checked in on Tiffany. “He just has a wonderful bedside manner. Very professional. He gave me his cell phone number, so I could call anytime or send a picture if there was something I was concerned about. I did get a skin irritation where the tape came off, and he came in on a Saturday to check it out and make sure everything was OK.” “I’m very happy with my results. Dr. Humble said it can take up to a year to completely heal...but I already look great. Finding a good doctor can be like pulling straws. I feel blessed to have found Dr. Humble. I live in the Med Center... minutes from so many doctors. But I would happily drive to Sugar Land again, and I recommend him all the time. Anyone who goes to him is lucky. He’s top-notch. Just fantastic!”

EMPOWERING

People T by Amy Sharp

racy Walker is passionate about helping and empowering people. It’s evident in her family, her community involvement, and her commitment to her clients as she celebrates more than 29 years with State Farm Insurance. Tracy says, “My career started with State Farm at age 19. I’ve worked as an adjuster and as an agent. You can be the hero of your family with the right plan and coverage. What I’ve learned is: most everyone has no idea of their coverage until something bad happens. That’s why I get to know you. I’m accessible. My clients have my cell phone number and we work out a coverage strategy to meet your budget both now and for your future.” After Hurricane Ike, Tracy handled more than 100 of her clients’ claims herself. “I went to their homes and wrote them checks before their neighbors ever saw an adjuster.” Tracy also does “Tracy’s Teen Talk,” which is an educational discussion on insurance and what to do when accidents happen. While she provides the full array of insurance services, Tracy’s biggest passion is life insurance.

Tracy says, “It’s a wonderful way to protect your family.” You can’t wait and hope for the best...as Tracy knows all too well. Tracy is a Stage 4 neuroendocrine carcinoma survivor, which is the same cancer that took the life of Apple’s Steve Jobs. Her daughter Jennifer has Diabetes Type 1. “We are examples of why you don’t want to wait. God is amazing and powerful and he’s done great things for Jennifer and me. Now my purpose in life is to empower people to be the hero to their own families. Life insurance does that with living benefits. Getting a permanent policy for kids is incredibly affordable. Once they have it, they can keep it for the rest of their lives no matter what’s thrown their way. This allows them to be the hero to their own kids one day.” Tracy’s pride and joy are her kids. She’s also a GG! “Between the two of us, Michael Andrade and I have six kids. Yes, we are an Awesome Bunch!” Son Justin and fiancé Gabriella Diano have Jesslynn and one on the way. Both will be graduating from U of H soon. Son James is a member of the esteemed offensive line at Dulles High School. Jordan Andrade dances

for Epic Dance Academy. Daughter Jennifer attends UTSA along with her love, Josh Parkman. Jenn serves as an ambassador for others with diabetes. Not in the family photo are Sasha Andrade who graduated from A&M of CC and is now working in her passion of stage management, and Nate Andrade who is following his passion and playing hockey in Indiana. To help empower you to make the best decisions for your family, Tracy offers a free consultation. Tracy says, “Bring in your stuff— your current coverage—and we are happy to review it for you. o you hear that? It’s the chorus of your family complaining about how hot it is inside the house. Oh, sure...one or two rooms are bearable. But the bedrooms upstairs are always sweat boxes. Then come the covert ops: various people-who-shall-notbe-named tiptoeing through the house to turn down the thermostat. Before you know it, the usually bearable rooms are freezing cold and your energy meter is spinning out of control. If this sounds familiar, there are solutions. According to Brian Jackson of Jackson Air & Heat in Sugar Land, your first line of defense is to have your ductwork inspected by a trained professional. If there are holes, leaks or blockages that are preventing cool air from reaching its destination, that could be your problem, and zoning a system works very well. But sometimes it’s the fault of an older or less-efficient air conditioning unit. Anything older than 10 to 15 years usually

needs to be replaced. “You shouldn’t have to keep your unit running all the time just to keep your house cool,” explains Brian. “Running your air conditioner constantly also means jaw-dropping energy bills. That’s why we use Trane variable speed XV20i air conditioners with TruComfort technology. They give you the exact amount of air conditioning you need when you need it. They’re also high efficiency—that means lower energy bills—and they remove humidity, which is so important here in Texas. Trane’s variable speed will please anyone who’s been on the losing end of the family thermostat wars: You can control everything from your computer or smartphone!” If your old A/C barely made it through last summer, now might be the time to get a great pre-season deal. Jackson Air & Heat can offer you 0% financing or instant rebates, plus Centerpoint rebates...up to $3240 in savings on a new Trane system.

“Whatever system you have, the most important thing is to keep it operating at peak condition,” says Brian. “That’s why it pays to always schedule an annual tune up. We come out, do a comprehensive tune up on your air conditioning system to verify that it’s working properly. This will extend the life of the equipment, prevent unnecessary repairs and breakdowns, save on your utility bills and keep your home safe. Call today to schedule your air conditioning tune up or a free air conditioning evaluation and quote. Our job is to make you comfortable!”

hen Ross and Stephanie Pilcik decided to build a pool, they contacted several companies. Stephanie says, “We really liked Bratton Pools because they were local and small, and the owner Mike Bratton is very personable and easy to get along with. He’s trusting and we were really drawn to his personality...we really focused in on him and decided to go with Bratton Pools.” The Pilcik’s backyard is odd-shaped and has an easement. Stephanie says, “We had some ideas. For example, we knew we wanted a rock waterfall. For other items we were open to suggestions. The design process at Bratton Pools really helped pull together a final plan. We worked with Mike and Bratton Pool’s Certified Pool Designer, Maggie Castillo. They put together a 3D design and then we were able to change things here and there. We went to the showroom where they showed us different materials. Some of the items they took outside to make sure we knew how it would look in the sunlight. Our final choices were stamped concrete, travertine coping, and pebble plaster.” With a time estimate of six to eight weeks, construction on the Pilcik’s pool got underway. “The crew showed up when they said they would. Mike was here daily making sure things were going as planned. If we

had a question, we called Mike and he returned our call the same day. At the end of each day, a mess was never left in our backyard. They accidentally cracked our sidewalk, and replaced it without us even asking. And to our surprise, the pool was finished in only five weeks!” With the pool complete, Stephanie and Ross hired a landscaper suggested by Mike. “We have an odd-shaped side yard, and our intention was to fill it with rock so we wouldn’t have to mow it. Mike and the landscaper came up with an idea to put in a putting green and we ran with it. We’re not golfers, but we have three little boys and just thought it would be fun for them! Mike and his crew constructed the putting green and it turned out great.” “We just love everything about our finished product,” continues Stephanie. “The whole experience was just wonderful and we could not be more pleased. We absolutely recommend Bratton Pools!” From pool construction and renovation, to outdoor kitchens, living areas, entertainment areas, fire pits, patio extensions, putting greens or wherever your imagination takes you, Bratton Pools creates a backyard that fits your personality and needs. Five Reasons To Go Compound! by Olivia Cane f you’ve never experienced the difference a compounding pharmacy can make in your life, Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy would like to invite you to come down and see for yourself. He’s been helping families lead healthier and happier lives in the Sugar Land area since 2003. “There are real benefits to choosing a compounding pharmacist. Whether you need antibiotics or custom-designed hormone replacement therapy, if you’re not getting the family-friendly, caring attention you need from your current pharmacy, it’s time to consider making the switch.” Here’s why:

I

1. Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy gives you continued access to discontinued medications. When a large manufacturer stops producing certain drugs, that doesn’t mean their patients stop needing them. A compounding pharmacist can recreate most medications using pharmaceutical-based ingredients. 2. Medication is easier to take when it’s tasty. Are you one of millions who find it difficult to swallow pills? Or who hate the taste of medicine? Campbell’s Compounding can make most medications from scratch using your flavor of choice. That includes topical creams, chewables, liquids, or lollipops. Even your pet’s medication can be cleverly and tastily disguised! 3. Custom-designed dosages. All too often, people are forced to take a “generally recommended dosage” of something when what they actually need is less. At Campbell’s, your dosage is created specifically for you. No guesswork.

4. No unwanted allergenic fillers, dyes, lactose, gluten or alcohol. These ingredients can cause unwanted reactions when taking certain medicines. Your friendly pharmacist at Campbell’s will make sure there’s nothing in your medicine that your body can’t handle. 5. Compounding pharmacists are true specialists. If you suffer from unusual or resistant maladies that a traditional pharmacist can’t seem to help you with, you may find relief with a compounding pharmacist who has a greater array of options to treat you. “I offer consultations by appointment for individuals, couples, and groups,” says Dr. Campbell. “Let me help you take control of your health and regain balance in your life.” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 Houston • 713-668-4833 6603 Kirby Dr., Houston, TX 77005 www.campbellscompounding.com

hen J.D. Sellers—owner of Optimal Sports Performance (OSP)—built his home nine years ago, there were bugs here and there for the first five years. J.D. says, “I had two different companies come out and both told me I needed to be on their monthly plan to get rid of the bugs. But it didn’t make sense to me. If they were doing their job...the bugs would be gone!” Around that time, local guys John Onofrey and Chris Millward opened BUGCO...the third company J.D. hired. “John came out and did the inside and sprayed around the outside. He told me it would knock ‘em out and he didn’t need to come back for three months. He backed up his word...the bugs were gone.” Fast forward to 2013 when J.D. took ownership of OSP. With a new location and a new build out, he again had a bug problem. “I called John and got the same deal I had in my home...and the bugs were gone. Not only had I found a great company,

I’d also found a great friend in John. BUGCO has grown. Back when I started with the service it was just the two of them. They have an army of guys now, and they’re all just like John and Chris. Great people who are all low key, personable, friendly, and easy to talk to. They get the job done! I can’t help but refer them to other people!” Optimal Sports Performance is widely known for athletic and sports performance training. But the hidden secret? OSP also offers small group adult training...something John now takes advantage of. A decorated Marine that has always given his all...his days in the Marines were a long time ago. Over time, raising a family and working hard combined with a less than stellar diet took its toll on his body. “After turning fifty things changed for me,” says John. “And not in a good way. I was in a lot of pain due to arthritis and inflammation. After spine surgery, a partial knee replacement and a hip replacement, I lost a lot of muscle and gained too

much fat. My longtime friend J.D. kept on me to join them at OSP. I finally made the decision to try the trainer lead adult group workouts about eight months ago, and I committed myself to working out a minimum of three days a week for one hour. The difference is incredible. Most of my pain is gone. Simple tasks are no longer difficult. I feel strong and I’ve lost fat and gained muscle. The members I have met there are welcoming, super friendly and inspire me during every session. Their presence makes the workouts easier. OSP has literally saved my quality of life!” “I love that I was able to help J.D., and he was able to help me,” continues John. “We have many, many fantastic businesses right here in Fort Bend County, and I’m truly grateful for all this community has done for me and my family. I really encourage everyone to consider buying ‘Fort Bend First!’” Mention this article to get a 10% new customer discount on OSP or BUGCO services.

An Honest Dentist by Amy Sharp

I

t’s hard to find a good dentist. It’s a story Becky knows all too well. “My mouth was really messed up. One dentist pulled a tooth that probably didn’t need to be pulled, and then put in a bridge that wasn’t working out. I needed at least one implant. Another seated a crown, and left too big a space next to the adjoining tooth...a constant food trap. I priced implants at several dentists, and they were very expensive.” By chance, Becky read about Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. in this publication. Dr. Lomonte’s been practicing in his same location in Stafford since 1982, which happens to be close to Becky’s home. Becky gave him a call and scheduled an appointment. Becky says, “I immediately liked him and his staff. Everyone is very friendly, laid back and down to earth. He’s been my dentist for two years now. His assistant makes me feel comfortable. The scheduler is awesome...always works with me on scheduling my appointments. The hygienist is also great and makes cleanings painless. Dr. Lomonte has done four iSy (pronounced ‘easy’) implants for me. And they were easy...I went about my day right after the procedure. His implant price was significantly lower than Come in the other dentists I had priced. This year he will as a patient be replacing my bad crown. He’s very honest and I and leave feel lucky to have found him!” So what is an iSy implant? “iSy stands for Intelligent as a friend!

System,” says Dr. Lomonte. “And that’s what they are—implants with all the stability and beauty of real teeth...but for 40% less than the usual implant costs. That’s possible because there are fewer instruments and fewer steps involved. You can come in over your lunch break to have the procedure done. There is very little discomfort...which is really remarkable in an implant this durable and foolproof. It was a great fit for Becky!” If you are not happy with your current dentist, give Dr. Lomonte a call. He’s always happy to listen to any and all of your questions... and we’re sure like Becky you’ll “Come in as a patient, leave as a friend!” Call today to schedule your FREE private implant consultation.

Celebrating One of Fort Bend’s Most Influential

Dee

Celebrating by Amy Sharp

On February 2, 2017 Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and The Mamie George Community Center held their 4th Annual Mission of Love Gala in honor of Dee Koch and her lasting impact on the Fort Bend community.

ee’s spent a lifetime spreading joy right here in Fort Bend County. Perhaps her biggest accomplishment? Her vision of dignity for our Mamie George Community Center in Richmond. Stop in to Mamie George and you’ll find our senior residents enjoying free lunch, socialization and activities in a beautiful facility. It’s the culmination of Dee’s vision. “The most important factor in developing Mamie George was dignity,” says Dee. “And it all started with a drawing on a napkin on how a successful senior center in another city worked.” Mamie George opened as a congregate eating program for seniors. Today, the recreational and educational activities at Mamie George include art, music, drama, personal fitness training, health, yoga, dance, creative writing and nutrition classes. “In the early days, we really didn’t have enough to do,” says Dee. “The Creative Aging Program, through the direction of Creative Aging Program Director Terri Bieber, really breathed life into this place. Growing older can be isolating. What we’ve created is a gathering place to stay healthy and active and build friendships. When I walk through these doors, I see such joy in our seniors. That alone lifts this place up to be a great stopping place in this community.”

“The real measure of a person is the lives that they touched.”

Dee’s legacy of love extends far beyond Mami George. As Director of Community Engagement for the George Foundation, she’s played

a key part in developing two community engagement programs. The Youth-in-Philanthropy Program, better known as YIP, allows high school students each year to experience an eight month, handson journey in volunteerism. The Leadership Excellence for Nonprofit Program is designed to arm board members and staff of local nonprofits with the knowledge, skill set, and network necessary to take their organization to the next level. Friend Don Kerstetter says, “What Dee provides to everything she touches is a breadth of support. From Mamie George, to the kids in YIP, to multimillion dollar corporations learning that giving back is not just financial, she has touched a lot of people.” At the Mission of Love Gala, countless members of our community shared stories of Dee. During dinner, a video by Meeko Spark was presented where even more of Dee’s friends shared how Dee has influenced their life for the better. Sugar Land Mayor Joe Zimmerman asked anyone who had been impacted by Dee to stand up. With countless guests standing, he said, “The real measure of a person is the lives that they touched. Dee, here’s the real legacy.” After the celebration, Dee said, “Thanks to the phenomenal group that put the event together and to each person who attended. I could not have felt more special and every detail is a moment I will treasure. Thank you, thank you for a spectacular evening.” Congratulations Dee! And Thank You!

by Sara Adams

ou may have met Elena Prudsky...she is a figure skating coach at Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center. Before she and her family moved to Sugar Land, she was a Russian Olympic ice skater. She has won silver at three senior international competitions, and she also won an Emmy for choreography in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. During one of her shows, Elena dislocated her hip and has been bothered by that injury off and on through the years. And like most professional athletes, it is not uncommon for her to incur new injuries as a natural part of her physically challenging job. In 2003, Elena was looking for a chiropractor that was convenient to her home and the ice rink. She had her first appointment with Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center and was pleased with the results. When she talks about her first visits with Dr. Harris, she says she experienced noticeable improvement. Then one day she realized she didn’t have any pain. Elena says, “He fixed me pretty good.” Elena has worked with Dr. Harris off and on for the past fourteen years. When the need arises, she seeks his help. She has even referred coworkers and friends as well as her husband, who is also a figure skating coach. Elena is a firm believer in the benefits of good chiropractic care and she trusts Dr. Harris. She says, “I trust Dr. Harris because I know if he says he can fix it, he fixes it.” Dr. Harris offers chiropractic care, pain relief, spinal decompression, and rehabilitation. He is well respected among his colleagues and the community as a philanthropist and humanitarian. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982, and recently celebrated his 40th anniversary in his chiropractic practice. He is known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to benefit from Dr. Harris’s expertise and you don’t have to wait for a friend to refer you.

A Fun and Fabulous Master Bathroom in 15 Days

ill Grasser, who does construction work himself, knew his master shower was built wrong. “Five years ago, I regrouted it,” says Bill. “And two years later the tiles literally fell apart and the boards were mush.” With money allocated to a full master bath remodel, Bill and his wife Linda contracted Teri Gilberg (better known as “The Re-Modelista”) to get it done. “Teri was very helpful in both picking things out and pointing us in the right direction,” says Bill. “She just works with you. On her recommendation, Christine at ProSource helped us find a cabinet color we loved that would match the tub and shower. Christine also suggested the glass tile ribbon trim all the way around the tub and shower. At Floor & Decor—on Teri’s recommendation as well—we found the perfect floor tile that looks like rustic wood. It’s multi-colored and we are just in love with it. During this project, I also discovered Twins Remodeling, the company Teri contracted for the frameless glass on the shower. They really are twins and great guys. I had my mind set on quality quartz for the countertops, but Teri talked me out of it. She told me not to spend my money on that. She found a more cost effective quartz for us, and it turned out perfect! I’m a foot taller than my wife, and I had previously put in a ‘stick to the wall’ moveable shower head. Teri suggested a permanent moveable shower head and it has just worked great for us. I have a friend that’s a plumber, and Teri graciously accepted my offer to get the plumbing

done myself in exchange for removing the wallpaper.” “During construction, at times I went in and worked with Tony, Teri’s lead contractor. It was really a lot of fun to work with all of them. In the corner of the Roman tub, there was a shortcut previously done wrong. I found a pillar at Home Depot and Tony cut it to size. He and I put it together, installed it in that corner and painted it the same color as the cabinetry. It turned out to be a great accent piece.” Linda and Bill’s master bathroom remodel was finished early. “They started on a Monday, worked through that first weekend and were done the following Friday.” And the finished product? “Everybody raves!” says Bill. “Linda and I love it. When my son and granddaughter stopped by, they were shocked by the difference. It’s just amazing!” Re-Modelista: Your Home Renovation Specialist “She Gets the Job Done!” 832-535-2501 • cell: 832-731-3191 www.theremodelista.com

Notice the difference refinishing can make! No need to send a beauty like this to a landfill!

Earth Day by Remodeling!

T

raditional home remodeling is a major source of waste to overflowing landfills. According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), a home remodeling project can generate between 70 and 115 lbs. of waste per square foot! But did you know that remodeling without demolition has been an obsession of locally owned Miracle Method Surface Refinishing for years? That’s right! Owners Jonee and Paul Barnett say, “Replacing is messy. Not to mention that replacing renders the area practically unusable for an extended period of time. Miracle Method is both fast and very effective. And when we refinish an existing tub, tile surround, bathroom vanity or kitchen countertop in place, we are keeping those fixtures out of a landfill.” Maybe it’s your shower pan that’s become very difficult to clean...to the point that no amount of scrubbing can remove the stains. The Miracle Method refinish goes right over the existing shower pan, not only making the newly refinished surface beautiful, but easy to clean too! “We can also refinish the tile surround,” says Paul. “Sealing in those grout lines that are also difficult to clean. The result is a surface that cleans easily and will look great for years to come.” Or perhaps it’s your laminate countertop that’s scratched with cracks around the seams and peeling edges. “We refinish that countertop right there in place,” says Jonee. “We have lots of color options, including our Natural Accents® stone-look finishes. We can even add a bullnose edge, truly giving it the ‘look’ of stone!” There’s an even better reason to choose Miracle Method Surface Refinishing over traditional remodeling. You’ll save up to 75% over bathroom fixture and kitchen countertop replacement costs. That’s less money, less time, less dust, and nothing goes in a landfill! Miracle Method has received the Angie’s List Super Service Award and is a BBB accredited business with an A+ rating. Celebrate Earth Day (Saturday, April

hristie and Russell Clayton were ready for new floors throughout their home. “We visited three or four flooring stores,” says Russell. “Lone Star Floors was really close to our house. We wanted COREtec waterproof flooring in the kitchen, carpet in the living room and bedrooms, and a natural wood tile for the hall. We got estimates from all of them. Lone Star Floors came in right in the middle—not too high and not too low—quality work at a fair price. To finalize our choices, we took samples home. We even changed our minds a few times. But it didn’t matter, everyone at Lone Star was very easy to work with.” “When the Lone Star crews were working in our home, everyone was just as professional. I’ve hired other contractors who didn’t show up when they said they would...and when they did show, blared their radios throughout out the house even though we were home. None of this happened with Lone Star Floors. They always called to let me know they were on the way, and showed up on time. They even worked around our schedule. Just very professional, and every single one of them was easy

One of the owners, Imad Mansour, came himself to install the transitions. This is a great company and I highly recommend them!” Lone Star Floors is co-owned by Imad and his cousins Mohamed Naser and Ziad Mukhaimer. THE

PHILOSOPHY

A KW (Keller Williams) Southwest Experience

I

The McMichael’s Story

n the fall of 2013, Tom and Joan McMichael decided to build a house on the water. To sell their current home, they hired the same real estate agent they had used in two previous house sales. Joan says, “We prepared ourselves for another stressful journey. We just assumed stress was normal when selling a house!” The McMichael’s house sat on the market for about five months with few showings and no interest. Joan says, “Our real estate agent did not feel public open houses were a good idea...so none were held. In the meantime, a house was placed on the market down the street from ours. Cathy Stubbs of KW (Keller Williams) Southwest was the real estate agent and we attended.” “At the open house, we met Cathy. She was extremely nice and we could see how determined she was to sell that house. And yes...it sold while ours remained on the market. But the incident that made us rethink our choice in real estate agents was when the house next door to ours was placed on the market. The first weekend it was listed, an open house was held and we watched car after car attend...yet we had no showings that weekend.” Joan and Tom decided they had to make a change. They called Cathy Stubbs, who came over within an hour or two prepared to take on their house. “The difference was day and night,” says Joan. “Cathy made us

feel as if our house was her only priority. When she came over for the photoshoot, she brought some staff members who were extremely nice and gave us a sense that there was a team behind our sell. The photos Cathy took were outstanding and used not only for the listing, but for a video and other marketing. She told us she would hold as many open houses as we wanted and she did exactly that. Our house was sold within 27 days of our listing with Cathy, and as a result of an open house. Cathy also made the closing process painless. She handled everything in a professional manner and did not contact us unless absolutely necessary.” “The bottom line is that Cathy cares about her clients. She made the entire process as stress-free and painless as possible. She took charge and achieved results in a timely manner. We loved that she was accessible to us. She would actually answer our calls if she was available, and if not, she returned calls within an hour or so. Her team was always professional, and to this day we are still friendly with Cathy’s team. As veteran house sellers, we now know what qualities make a great real estate agent. Cathy has all of those qualities and yes, we will definitely use her again when the time comes!” Are you ready to buy or sell? Call the team at KWSW today! Team Building

Best

at Its D by Amy Sharp

onna Dagley of Coldwell Banker United, REALTORS® wanted a fun team building experience for her 60+ staff and agents. “An escape room came to mind. I had never done one, but some friends and my son highly recommended it. I googled...and was thrilled to find Escape Again Rooms right here in Sugar Land!” To play the rooms, Donna split her office into six teams. “We intentionally split up friends. When you work in real estate, your schedule is crazy and not everyone knows each other. This forced them to get acquainted. Three teams played the rooms before lunch and three played after. During lunch we handed out silly office awards!” And the escape room experience? “Phenomenal! We range in age from 20 to 80...and it was fun across the board. For my team, it took us a bit to figure out that we needed to divide and conquer the room, rather than all work on the same puzzle. It was fun to see one person become the leader on one clue, and another on the next clue. It’s one of the best team building ideas I’ve ever run across. You can’t possibly escape a room all by yourself, you have to work together. Many were skeptical...but now a lot of my staff are going back with family and friends!” When you host an event at Escape Again Rooms, you have the flexibility to bring in your own food and drinks (including alcohol). “Not being tied to a vendor was a real plus for us,” says Donna. “We had James Coney Island cater for a casual fun day. The Escape Again owners were wonderful, gracious and very accommodating. They set up tables and chairs, and really rolled out the red carpet for us.” Escape Again co-owner David Sebek adds, “The escape room experience is a fun way to break up the monotony of any corporate event and make it memorable. We love that we could do that for Donna’s team. If needed, we can even accommodate presentations in our lounge. Just give us a call...let’s see what we can do for you!”

Maximum Results in Minimum Time...No Sweat!

MINUTES PER WORKOUT

1-2X PER WEEK

by Amy Sharp

T

he reasons people don’t exercise are countless. They don’t have time, don’t like sweating, don’t like gyms, don’t know what to do, hate the drudgery, don’t like the subliminal pressure of fitness crowds, maybe they’ve been injured by exercising before, maybe they have minor or even major medical issues. What if you could push all of these obstacles to the side...build the strength you need to be healthy and active all in just 20 minutes, two times a week—free of sweat—wearing the clothes you’re wearing right now? Sound unbelievable? That’s exactly what Ken Roche, a fitness enthusiast who retired from Shell after 35 years thought. “I was looking for something in retirement that could really make a difference for people. I discovered SuperSlow Zone and it was too good to be true. After talking with the CEO, I drove up to College Station to visit their location. I was amazed. I didn’t sweat at all, but could feel the effect on my muscles. It worked.” The SuperSlow Zone® exercise protocol was developed in 1982 during a $3.2 million Osteoporosis study at the University of Florida School of Medicine. The protocol is based on–fatiguing muscle groups to momentary failure, and done slowly to avoid the joint forces that occur with traditional strength exercises. Having qualified professional instruction is very important to be effective and safe. That’s why SSZ is accredited by the IACET, the same group that certifies GE Healthcare, The American Physical Therapy Association, and similar prestigious organizations. “When done correctly, you only need to do this twice a week and we track your results with proprietary technology,” says Ken. All sessions are one-on-one with a certified instructor in a quiet, elegant studio equipped with medical-grade equipment. Ken’s wife and co-owner Sheryl is sold as well. Sheryl ran track and played basketball at Texas A&M. She has spent a lifetime training. “I almost feel like it’s cheating!” says Sheryl. “I think about all the hours I put in training, yet this produces so much of the same result. If you don’t enjoy exercise or just don’t have the time, this is perfect. You can fit it to your schedule...because you can wear regular clothes and you won’t need a shower after. Perfect for people with health challenges, business professionals, busy moms, retired people...anybody that wants evidence-based results and to get the exercise done so they can move on with the rest of their day.” Nurse Practitioner Janine Sherman of Southwest Ob/Gyn is one of those people. “Before I found SuperSlow Zone, I was doing cardio exercise, but no weight training. I didn’t feel

like I had time for it. That was several months ago. Today, I feel stronger, healthier, and I’m a lot less stiff when I get of bed in the morning. Strength training gets more and more important as we get older, and SSZ is a great way to add it into your regimen...even if you legitimately feel you do not have the time. It’s quick, it’s convenient, and it works!” “We would love to give you a free consultation and walk you through a sample workout,” says Ken. Set up a consultation today!

ASK MARGIE

The Lawyer Who Cares THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:

Justice for All by Amy Sharp

F

ort Bend Lawyers Care is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2006 by the Fort Bend County Bar Association to respond to the legal needs of our community’s low-income residents. People who live in poverty have no access to the civil justice system, and are not entitled to courtappointed attorneys for representation. • That means if there is an abusive landlord who evicts them wrongfully, they lose. • If there is an abusive spouse who can afford to hire a divorce attorney, they lose. • If a foster parent with a child over the age of three can’t afford an attorney, they lose. That is, they lose unless FBLC steps in to help. It’s an organization Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly is passionate about. In 2009, after taking a hiatus from law to raise her children, Margie transitioned back into law by becoming a paralegal for Fort Bend Lawyers Care. Margie says, “This was a life-changing moment. It’s a great organization with a great cause, and it’s helped shape my career. After I passed the Texas Bar in 2013 (on the first try!) I opened my own private family law and estate planning practice. At that time, FBLC asked me to serve on the board. I’ve served as secretary since 2014.” Although Fort Bend Lawyers Care has great volunteer attorneys like Margie, they never have enough resources to represent all of the cases that deserve representation. FBLC operates solely on grants, donations and proceeds from their one fundraiser a year. FBLC is the sole legal aid organization in Fort Bend County, and the need for legal care for people in poverty is growing. This year marks the 9th annual “Justice for All” Luncheon, honoring the dedicated volunteer lawyer and non-lawyer volunteers, sponsors, donors and strategic partners for their hard work, time and resources. This year’s luncheon is co-chaired by Margie and Suzanne Bartholomew, a founding member. Presenting Sponsor is Springer Law Firm Attorneys & Mediation Services. During the luncheon, guests will

Dependability, Flexibility and Thorough Cleaning... by Amy Sharp

T

hese are the reasons the ladies of Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services have been cleaning Terri Hurley’s home for more than six years! “They are very good, very professional,” says Terri. “And very flexible if I need to change my time. They know my house and do things just the way I like them done. The same team comes to my home each week, and they are finished in two to three hours. They clean really, really well and I’m very happy with them. It’s why I stay with them!” Mahoney’s provides customers with what they call a “Personal Touch Service.” It means they strive to go above and beyond to exceed expectations. Terri says, “Recently I killed a huge fly on my kitchen window. I asked the ladies if they wouldn’t mind cleaning the inside of the window and they gladly did it for me. Another day one of the ladies noticed my living room ceiling fan—that’s more than 20 ft high—was dusty. She got out a long feather duster and got after it. That’s just the kind of thing they do on a normal basis.” When your home is cleaned by Mahoney’s, they provide all of the cleaning

supplies and equipment. “The service provided is very cost effective for what I get,” says Terri. “I recommend them all the time. And they’re more than fair. I live in a neighborhood where parking on the street is prohibited. I looked out my study one day to see the Mahoney’s car going up on a tow truck. I yelled to the supervisor, and we ran outside and chased them down. It was $125 just to drop the car. I said, ‘Ok, I’ll pay.’ Then the Mahoney’s supervisor offered to pay half. I didn’t let her of course, I was happy to take care of it. But that’s just another example of their professionalism. I highly recommend them!” All Mahoney’s employees are bonded and insured, and your satisfaction is guaranteed. That’s right...if for any reason you are not satisfied, contact Mahoney’s within 24 hours and they gladly come back! Call today!

Was Your House Built Before 1980?

by Amy Sharp

I

f so, there’s a good chance you have galvanized pipes. Journeyman licensed plumber Luke Burkhalter of local familyowned Alan’s Plumbing says, “With galvanized pipes, it’s not IF it’s going to leak, it’s WHEN it’s going to leak. These pipes start with slow leaks...and before you know it, they’ve caused damage. You come back from vacation and find busted sheetrock, a flooded house and a messed up ceiling.” The good news is...you don’t have to wait until the damage occurs. Alan’s Plumbing can repipe your house. Luke says, “When we repipe, we install new PEX pipe on all of your supply lines.” PEX pipe is made from cross-linked HDPE (high density polyethylene). The HDPE is melted and continuously extruded into a tube to form a highperforming pipe. “This pipe comes with a 25 year manufacturer’s warranty on labor, damage and material,” continues Luke. “And here at Alan’s Plumbing we offer a lifetime warranty on the material. We can do either a horizontal repipe or a full house repipe on your house using PEX.”

On a horizontal repipe, all of the galvanized pipe in your attic—the pipes most likely to leak—are replaced with PEX. “It takes about eight to ten hours,” says Luke. “And since we are only repiping the attic, we don’t have to cut any of your sheetrock. A horizontal repipe is about 1 /3 the price of a full house repipe, and we recommend it for one story houses. In a full house repipe, we take out all of the pipes, down to every fixture. We recommend this in a two story house, since we have to cut the sheetrock anyway between floors. It takes two to three days, but we work an area at a time so you can still live in the house. A full repipe is a great opportunity to replace all of your fixtures as well. In both the horizontal and the full repipe, all pipes are insulated and strapped...these pipes won’t move. We recycle all galvanized pipe removed from your home. And—as always—whether we replace your fixtures or not, every supply line valve is changed and every toilet is rebuilt. For

every job we do, our aim is to leave everything in perfect working condition.” Alan’s Plumbing is owned by Luke’s dad, master licensed plumber Alan Burkhalter. Luke’s uncle Chris and his brother Beau plus Jeff Johnson are also journeyman licensed plumbers. Apprentices Jaime and Trevor are working toward their journeymen license. This crew has seen thousands of leaks in our area with galvanized piping. Luke says, “Quail Valley, Sugar Creek, The Meadows and most of Stafford...most any house built before 1980 has galvanized pipes.” Think your house has galvanized pipe? Call 281-261-1064 and Luke’s mom Jennifer will answer the phone to set up your free consultation and repiping estimate. Don’t wait for disaster to hit...prevent it today!
