Food, Wine and Roses

The Perfect Mother’s Day!

by Amy Sharp

“O

ur Mother’s Day roses have become a Sugar Land tradition,” says Corelli’s Italian Cafe General Manager Sean Kennedy. “We present a rose to every mother that visits on Mother’s Day, and we dote on Mom. Our aim is to make her day as special as possible!” It will be special. Mom will enjoy the freshest made-from-scratch Italian food. More than 20 years ago, Papa Corelli created these recipes by conducting extensive research in Italy. His golden rule still stands today: NO FREEZER. “We’ve stayed true to our roots,” says Sean. “Everything we serve is fresh and made when you order it.” Wine and beer are available, or bring Mom’s favorite bottle of wine for a corkage fee. “Mother’s Day is a family affair,” continues Sean. “So the people that made our special guests ‘moms’ will enjoy a full menu created just for them.” And it’s a day worthy of dessert. Corelli’s cheesecake and tiramisu are some of the best in Houston. “Because we make it special for everyone,” adds Sean, “Mother’s Day tends to be one of our busiest days of the year. I would suggest coming a little early or taking advantage of our 20 minute call ahead seating. We’ll have the roses waiting!”

ommunities thrive when its members work together. A perfect example? Classic Chevy Sugar Land and Fort Bend Women’s Center. Fort Bend Women’s Center is the only dedicated domestic violence and sexual assault emergency shelter and crisis hotline in Fort Bend County. In addition to crisis intervention services, it’s also the largest regional provider of non-residential services such as counseling, case management, advocacy and other support services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. For many years, Classic Chevy Sugar Land has been a key player in supporting Fort Bend Women’s Center. “We are thrilled to have Classic Chevy Sugar Land as our friend,” says CEO Vita Goodell. “They support Fort Bend Women’s Center in so many ways! For the past several years, we have been honored to have Classic Chevy Sugar Land as the Presenting Sponsor for our largest fundraiser: Boogie. And this year, Classic Chevy Sugar Land owners Jeff and Tiffany Sebastian also served as honorary chairs for Boogie.” Fort Bend Women’s Center has also turned to Classic Chevy Sugar Land for vehicles. “We have a need for vans and trucks,” says Vita. “These trucks are box trucks. We use them to pick up donations of furniture and larger items. These trucks are not necessarily in the scope of what Classic Chevy Sugar Land typically carries. But each time we have gone to them in search of a new vehicle, they have found it for us and given Fort Bend Women’s Center a fantastic deal.” Items donated go directly to clients of Fort Bend Women’s Center or are sold in their Pennywise Resale Shops. Pennywise Chief Retail Operations Officer Joy Dowell says, “We are thrifting and resale at its best. I encourage you to check out our stores. On Thursdays you can purchase a bag for $10 and take home everything you can fit into the bag!” Classic Chevy Sugar Land owner Tiffany Sebastian says, “We are very proud to be friends of Fort Bend Women’s Center. I encourage each of you to learn more about them and see how you can help members of our community in great need.” “A huge ‘Thank you’ to Tiffany, Jeff and Classic Chevy Sugar Land for their continued support in bringing ‘Healing & Hope’ to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault,” adds Vita. “We really couldn’t do it without you. It’s so nice to know we have businesses of such great integrity right here in Fort Bend County.”

arvin Marcell first scheduled an appointment with Dr. Ulises Baltazar because his wife Debbie thought his varicose veins were unsightly. “I had more than few,” says Marvin. “And they were getting worse. A friend recommended I visit Dr. Baltazar. But to my surprise and shock, Dr. Baltazar was not concerned at all about the way my veins looked. He was concerned that they were a sign of thrombosis...a clear and present danger to my health!” Thrombosis is the formation of blood clots within a blood vessel. If left untreated, thrombosis can lead to stroke and other negative, fatal health conditions. “Dr. Baltazar took his time to give me a fascinating explanation about what happens to create varicose veins and how it can be corrected,” says Marvin. “He told me it was not a case of if my blood would clot, but when. I was in more danger than I realized, and Dr. Baltazar moved promptly. Most of my treatments occurred in his extremely professional office that is adjacent to Houston Methodist Sugar Land. In a situation that could be nerve-racking, Dr. Baltazar’s staff treated me like family. I was never worried or nervous, they were very caring. I did require one surgery under general anesthesia. Dr. Baltazar estimated it would take one hour, but during surgery he uncovered more veins that needed to be removed than he expected. He didn’t rush—the surgery ultimately took nearly three hours—but Dr. Baltazar made sure it was done right.” “From a patient standpoint, Dr. Baltazar is one impressive guy and doctor,” continues Marvin. “We really hit it off. He’s fun to be around, but also knows his stuff and is very serious. What struck me the most during this entire ordeal was that Dr. Baltazar asked if he could pray with me before my surgery. He led this prayer, and it was not a quick, ‘Please watch over us.’ This was a very moving and confidence-inspiring prayer. I’m a Christian, and it really made me feel even more at ease to have a fellow man of God working on me.” Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Baltazar is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic—a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency. “It’s unbelievable how different my legs look!” says Marvin. “But that’s not what’s important. Dr. Baltazar saved my life. I’m so grateful to my friend Gina for sending me Dr. Baltazar’s way. I will never be able to thank her enough.”

NEVER

“Sit It Out”Again!

by Amy Sharp re you the “purse watcher” at the country and western bar? Or maybe you find yourself sitting alone (or with your spouse!) year after year at the company gala? Not anymore. April and Chris Muller, owners of Arthur Murray Sugar Land, are here to make sure you never “sit it out” ever again! Not to worry, Chris and April haven’t been dancing since birth either. They met at Iowa State University. Each had joined the ballroom dance club to get involved and meet other people. “It’s a long story that ends (and then begins!) when Chris was studying abroad in Australia,” says April. “He convinced me to fly halfway around the world for our first date.” The couple became dance partners and competed together. This was 13 years ago, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Chris and April’s wide network in the dance world led to a teaching opportunity at Arthur Murray in nearby Cypress. The first Arthur Murray Dance Center opened 107 years ago. Today there are 270 studios across 23 countries with more than 1800 instructors. Five of the last six years, Chris has been named the #1 teacher in the company. Lucky for us, when April and Chris saw an opportunity to own the Sugar Land location, they jumped on it! “Ninety percent of our students have never danced before,” explains April. So how does it work? “You (or you and your partner) come in for a $25 sample lesson. We determine what style you are interested in. Then we set up personal lessons based on your schedule. You are never

A

in over your head. Each lesson is style and level specific, and with enrollment in personal lessons all group classes and practice parties are complimentary.” The benefits to dancing are endless. It’s exercise and it’s stress relief. It’s social and it’s intimate. “What we do is enhance people’s lives through dance. Our students become friends. They go out dancing together. We see empty nesters rekindling their romance. We can also help with special events like the wedding first dance, the mother/son dance and the father/daughter dance.” The first step in discovering the benefits of dance is a sample class. THE ONE TO SEE

ew things in life are more inspiring than science and medicine, especially when you see them applied to helping others. But to use your gift to better people’s failing eyesight? Now you’re edging into “angel wings” territory, and that’s exactly what optometrists Dr. Jocelyn Horiszny and Dr. Kristyn Reed at Today’s Vision Sugar Land do—they open up the world for people whose vision has grown darker and blurrier. In addition to providing their patients with the best in optometric care, designer eyewear and contact lenses, they offer a wide array of treatment options for vision problems, including the co-management of LASIK laser surgery, pediatric needs, cataract and glaucoma management. If your eyesight isn’t what it used to be, Today’s Vision Sugar Land is the right place to call. What’s also fascinating are the reasons both doctors got into optometry. In Dr. Horiszny’s case, it started with her own personal experience of an eye condition called myopia, or nearsightedness. Most people see it as relatively benign, but it’s quite a bit more

serious than that. By conservative estimate, 1.6 billion children and adults worldwide are affected by myopia, and that number will likely hit 2.5 billion as early as next year. “When you have myopia,” explains Dr. Horiszny, “most likely your nearsightedness will progressively worsen. You constantly need stronger prescription glasses with thicker, heavier lenses. While there’s no outright cure for myopia, its progression can be slowed. My husband and I are both very myopic. Our children are myopic. That’s why my interest is so personal. At Today’s Vision Sugar Land, we offer treatment options using the most technologically advanced equipment available. Treating and correcting your vision problems is really important to us.” For Dr. Reed, her interest in optometry came later. Originally, she wanted to become a pediatrician—until she actually shadowed one on “Take Your Kid to Work Day!” “Unhappy babies? Not my thing,” she says. “I loved math and science though, and in high school I had the option to either do a mentorship or another science fair project. So I followed my own optometrist. He taught me how to

work up patients and got me jump-started in optometry. I really love that he did!” A wearer of glasses and contacts since she was little, Dr. Reed’s specialty is scleral contact lenses and contacts for hard-to-fit eyeballs. “My passion is helping those that can’t see, see,” she explains. “In fact, I met Today’s Vision Sugar Land owner Dr. Tom Arnold at a scleral contact lens symposium. I immediately fell in love with this office and this staff.” As a provider of optometry services around the world, Dr. Reed is also active in Benevolent Missions International. Dr. Horiszny and Dr. Reed together with Dr. Arnold and Dr. Joseph A. Janes comprise a sharp-eyed team for all of your family’s vision management needs. “We offer you more than just answers,” says Dr. Arnold. “We provide you with solutions that are very easy to see!” Today’s Vision Sugar Land 281-242-2020 15337 Southwest Freeway Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.2020sugarland.com

our years ago, Whitney found herself in a revolving door of cleaning services. “I tried several companies right after we moved to Sugar Land,” says Whitney. “The experience was not so wonderful. Things were left wet, things were left dirty. My home just wasn’t as clean as I wanted it to be. Then I found Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services through a Google search, and they’ve been cleaning my home ever since.” Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services is local and independently-owned by Imelda Mahoney and her daughter Casandra. The company officially started in 2007, but Imelda has been cleaning homes since her children were small. For the past four years, a Mahoney’s team has cleaned Whitney’s home every week. “Their product is amazing!” says Whitney. “My home is clean, they take

?

out the trash, change the sheets and even do any dishes left in the sink.” “I also love that they are super flexible,” continues Whitney. “I have four dogs, and now I also have a four-month-old baby. That’s a lot of moving parts! They are great about asking what day works for me. While the team will work around me if I’m here, I prefer to stay away...so when I was on maternity leave it meant I needed to pack up and get out. Every time I’ve had to cancel or change things around, Imelda has been very gracious. I do recommend Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services.” All Mahoney’s House Cleaning teams are bonded and insured. They will also work on the cleaning schedule

of your choosing: weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or a one-time deep clean. Gift certificates are also available. With Mother’s Day coming up, a thorough yet flexible cleaning service is the perfect gift for every mom in your life!

ASK MARGIE The Lawyer Who Cares

THIS MONTH’S TOPIC:

Estate Planning Will in Place, Baby on the Way by Amy Sharp arried couple Dr. James Doyle and Dr. Kali Willis are both area dentists. James met Fort Bend attorney Margie Connolly through the Sugar Land Rotary Club. James says, “Margie is our current Rotary president. I’ve always found her a good person, someone I could rely on. Now that Kali and I are expecting our first child, we thought we needed to be more responsible. We did not have wills in place. We felt we needed to do estate planning, construct wills, name powers of attorney, medical directives, etc. So I asked Margie to help us.” If you’ve been through the estate planning process, you know there’s a lot of legalese involved. “What I really like about Margie,” continues James, “is that she explained everything. She didn’t just ask, ‘Who is your executor?’ or ‘Who is your guardian?’ Without any frustration, Margie explained to Kali and I the responsibilities of the executor and guardian so that we could make educated decisions. She also asked pointed questions and recorded

our answers to make sure we covered everything. Margie constructed our documents in such a way that Kali and I could keep things separate where we wanted to. We were not asked to compromise anything.” “Life changes fast,” says Margie. “An estate plan simply means putting a plan in place to take care of your loved ones, a plan for the distribution of your assets, and a plan to instruct loved ones on your wishes. I’m so excited for James and Kali as they bring their first child into the world, and I’m thrilled they’ve made their estate plan a priority. It’s very important!” “Margie is very professional and easy to work with,” adds James. “This process was very smooth and our expectations were met. We absolutely recommend Margie.” James practices dentistry in the office of Bruce C. Greenway, DDS. He is set to purchase this practice in January of 2020 where Kali will join him in providing general, restorative and cosmetic dentistry to our community. our family’s journey of discipleship includes your children. Through its many ministries, Sugar Land Baptist Church is a safe and fun place for your kids to encounter the living God for themselves, and learn about God’s work in the world. It starts with the babies. At Sugar Land Baptist Church, baby dedications take place several times a year as part of the regular Sunday worship service. Senior Pastor Dr. Taylor Sandlin says, “We dedicate one baby at a time. I get the joy of carrying the baby around the sanctuary, one of my favorite things to do. The parents and our congregation commit to raising the child in the church. It’s a good time to slow down and remember we are all made in God’s image; a beautiful picture of God’s love. I would be happy to visit with anyone interested in a baby dedication.” And don’t worry, Taylor has been coined “The Baby Whisperer.” “They almost never cry for me!” says Taylor. As your kids grow up, Sugar Land Baptist Church has a plethora of programs to help them grow with God. Summer is all about Vacation Bible School. Associate Pastor for Preschool and Children Amy Sims says, “Vacation Bible School is one of the best weeks of the year. Our building is filled with excited kiddos—each one here to learn about their place in God’s story, meet new friends,

and have so much fun along the way.” This year’s theme is “Roar: Life is Wild, God is Good!” “We will be surrounded by a fun African safari theme as we explore God’s goodness and celebrate that even when life is wild, God is with us. This curriculum includes fun science experiments, team-building games, engaging Bible songs, tasty treats and so much more. All of it points back to the truth that Jesus loves us and has a plan for us. Your child will also have a chance to participate in a missions project that will provide health and nutrition to moms and babies in Zambia.” Vacation Bible School is open to all children entering grades 1 through 6 and is free of charge. Menopause or Man-o-pause?

ed convertibles, new outfits, and a wandering eye aren’t the only signs of a mid-life crisis. Anxiety, depression, aggression, lack of motivation and a loss of interest in sex can all be linked to a drop in naturally occurring sex hormones...in both men and women! Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph. says, “It’s a common misconception that only women suffer from a drop in hormones as they go through menopause. Actually, aging results in a drop in progesterone and estrogen in women, as well as testosterone in men. Keeping your hormones in balance is the key to enjoying life...whether you’re going through menopause or ‘manopause.’” The secret to saving your sanity could be balancing your hormones. Dr. Campbell says, “Women of all ages need progesterone to strengthen bones, protect breasts, calm nerves, promote restful sleep and decrease fluid retention. Progesterone production declines with age. In addition, perimenopausal and menopausal women may also suffer from estrogen deficiency. Fatigue, night sweats, weight gain, headaches, loss of libido, osteoporosis, insomnia, diminished mental clarity, endometriosis, lack of energy or drive, fibrocystic breast disease, hot flashes and vaginal dryness could all be signs that your body needs hormone balancing with a combination of bio-identical estrogen hormones and progesterone.” A sudden drop in hormones feels like your body’s slamming on the brakes, but for most men testosterone hormones decrease gradually over time. Dr. Campbell says, “My patients tell me this decline in testosterone can sneak up on you, Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy until one day you realize you just don’t have the drive, self-confidence, “If our staff can’t make it… assertiveness, or energy you used to have. ancy Carter is a partner at The Muller Law Group, a firm that specializes in representing developers and special purpose districts like municipal utility districts (MUDs) and levee improvement districts (LIDs). Nancy represents many LIDS right here in Fort Bend County, including several in the Riverstone subdivision. “Riverstone experienced extensive flooding in the wake of Hurricane Harvey,” says Nancy. “And it was a very slow process to get that water drained, almost a full week. With limited to no access, it was also a chance for the mosquitoes to really set in. On the first day of recovery—as people were coming back to clean up and muck their houses—we desperately needed regional mosquito control. I left voicemails everywhere. Many companies in the area were not yet open. Only one company called me back: BUGCO Pest Control.” BUGCO Pest Control is locally-owned and operated by John Onofrey and Chris Millward. “John took my plea for help seriously,” continues Nancy. “He understood the urgency. John gave me his personal phone number, and sent his entire staff. They showed up in Riverstone within an hour to truck fog and spread larvicide. They continued treatment in Riverstone through the fall. As the weather got cooler, they recommended we back off with the treatment. They were not overzealous. BUGCO took it upon themselves to dial back the business when it was not needed. I think that’s really admirable and I appreciate that they do that.” A year ago, The Muller Law Group moved to their new office building. ndrea Koop met Daugherty Insurance owner Lisa Daugherty nearly 15 years ago. “We both play tennis,” says Andrea. “Then we ended up on the same team. We became friends.” About eight years ago, Andrea decided to let Lisa have a look at her insurance policies. “Two things happened,” continues Andrea. “First, Lisa nearly cut my bill in half! This included my home policy, life policy and a jewelry policy. And she found holes in my coverage. My husband, ophthalmologist Michael R. Koop MD, is a partner at Texas Eye Institute. Given his profession, Lisa suggested we purchase an umbrella policy.” An umbrella policy—also known as personal liability insurance— is a backup insurance plan that kicks in after other insurance coverage has paid out, covering accidents that occur on or off your premises that are caused by you. Lisa says, “We often recommend umbrella policies for medical professionals. The numbers show that doctors are more susceptible to lawsuits. Whatever the situation, when people find out you’re a doctor, they’re more willing to file a claim and ask for damages.” “We had exposure and we were not even aware,” says Andrea. “I appreciate Daugherty Insurance’s due diligence. We now have what we need at the best price, and they are very proactive. Annually, Daugherty Insurance reviews our policies and makes changes where needed to make sure we continue to get the best deal on the coverage we need. I very highly recommend Daugherty Insurance. In fact, I already have to many of my friends!” If you think you might need an umbrella policy—or maybe you’re unsure of exactly what you need and just need a thorough review of your policies—all it takes is a stop in at Daugherty Insurance. he countdown is on. Summertime is knocking on our door. But don’t let it affect your child’s teeth! Dentists see an uptick in dental emergencies during the summer. Remember that rule about no running at the pool? It’s important. Slipping on the wet concrete is hazardous for the teeth. Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS of Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry says, “We see poolside dental trauma often: chipped, loose and even knocked out teeth. For a chipped tooth that isn’t painful, just see a dentist as soon as you can. But if the tooth is loose or knocked out, time is of the essence. Most people rush to the ER or urgent care, but a dentist is better in this situation...and you only have about an hour to get there before it’s too late. Luxated teeth (teeth that have shifted) can be put back into place and splinted if necessary before the bones start healing. I’ve seen luxated teeth heal beautifully. For knocked out teeth, it depends. We generally don’t reimplant baby teeth. But permanent teeth are different. If the tooth is clean enough, grab it by the crown and reseat it in the socket. Otherwise, DENTIST LOCATIONS CARE drop the tooth in milk. Then get to a dentist (with the tooth in tow!) as quickly as possible to see about implantation.” During normal office hours, Dr. Shilpa accommodates walkin dental emergencies. After hours and on weekends, just give Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry a call and leave a voicemail. Dr. Shilpa calls you right back, triages over the phone, and meets you at the office if immediate treatment is warranted. Summer is also a popular season for contact sports. Most sports require some form of protective equipment, but frequently one important piece is overlooked: the mouthguard. “It’s much easier to protect the mouth than it is to fix it,” says Dr. Shilpa. “Not only will a mouthguard limit the risk of mouth-related injuries to the teeth, lips, and tongue, it can greatly reduce the severity of a concussion. Mouthguards are easy, cheap, and necessary.” Finally, don’t skip the dental routine over the summer. “The problem with summer is the lack of Dr. Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS structure and routine (at least from your kids’ perspective),” says Dr. Shilpa. “So teeth sometimes 4907 Sandhill Dr., Suite E go unbrushed. Because that’s who her Mom used, of course! Melissa says, “My husband Gregory and I are the second owners of this home. I think the original air conditioning and heating units were put in back in 2008. Our upstairs unit was not cooling. The downstairs was working ok, but it wasn’t helping me much when I slept. I like it very cool and heat rises. My mom lived here in Quail Valley for more than 40 years. Her A/C guy was Brian Jackson, the owner of Jackson Air and Heat. So I gave Brian a call.” This occurred on a Tuesday afternoon. “Brian offered to come out that same day,” continues Melissa. “But it was late, and I still had the downstairs A/C working. Fix Your Smile Without Traditional Braces by Olivia Cane

ow many times have you caught yourself almost smiling before remembering that your teeth are a little crooked? As heartbreaking as that sounds, it happens all the time. A kind of knee-jerk self-consciousness that prevents us from fully expressing our joy, all because of a dental imperfection. But that selfconsciousness can be a thing of the past! You have the power to fix problems such as crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, gaps and some misalignments with a technology called Invisalign. And few dentists know more about Invisalign than Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S., of Stafford. So what is Invisalign? “In a nutshell, Invisalign is braces you can’t easily see,” explains Dr. Lomonte. “It’s a transparent, plastic form of dental braces used to adjust teeth. They pop out like a retainer, but are super effective at correcting orthodontic issues. In order for them to be maximally effective, you must wear them at least twenty-two hours a day (you take the device out whenever you eat or drink, unless it’s water). But the good news is, Invisalign is not painful or inconvenient to wear. Most people forget they even have the device in their mouth. Better still, you’re not selfconscious about smiling because not only does Invisalign work, hardly anyone will know you’re using it.” But it’s not just the cosmetic aspects of Invisalign that are important. It’s the healthy alignment of the teeth. “Misaligned teeth cause problems,” says Dr. Lomonte. “When a patient has an uneven bite, it can cause the muscles in his or her jaw to become strained, even doing normal things like talking or chewing. An uneven bite often leads to temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ, which isn’t fun. Invisalign helps by getting that bite in good working Come in order. Among their many extraordinary talents, they can simultaneously drive a car, make important business decisions while talking on the phone, intercept a juice box flung by a child sitting in the back seat, and navigate the school drop-off line. She’s also mom to Jake Burkhalter (working toward a journeyman license) and Beau Burkhalter (journeyman-licensed and soon-to-be Master Plumber). Luke’s wife Chelsea helps Jennifer answer the Alan’s Plumbing phones. Luke and Chelsea are also the proud parents of Wyatt, the first grandson in the next generation of Burkhalters. There I manage my own caseload, as well as supervise four of our six lawyers. In court, we handle everything from temporary order hearings to pre-trial motions and jury trials.” Long in awe of the way authors shape our culture, Ronique wrote a book, From Divorce to Deliverance, which allowed her to expound on the most important aspects of her life, her Lord, her work as a judge, the law and her love of family. And her ultimate words to live by? “Never buy into the idea that women don’t work or play well together! Nothing could be further from the truth. CINCO DE MAYO MEANS FIESTA TIME!

I

by Olivia Cane

n Texas, Cinco de Mayo is no ordinary holiday. It’s a taste-a-palooza of all things Mexico—a glorious culture and history that spans thousands of years. There is no culinary tradition more deserving of its huge, devoted fan base than Mexico’s...and few Sugar Land restaurants serve fresher, more flavorful and authentic Mexican food than Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant. With sixteen years in the same location, Lupe, her husband Jaime, and their family have been cooking food from scratch using recipes that have been handed down through generations. “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing people enjoy the things I’ve made them that were made for me,” says Lupe. “Real Mexican food is created by using the freshest ingredients. A good cook wants her flavors to sing.” If the sign of a successful restaurant is its popularity with the locals, Lupita’s has been a staple with the Sugar Land/Houston crowd for years. Most weekends, there’s a line out the door! Flour tortillas are soft and warm to the touch. Seafood so fresh, it tastes as though it was plucked from the ocean just moments before arriving at your table. Beef fajitas bathed in a tart and salty marinade and then dusted with spices that Lupe grinds by hand in the kitchen. “I’m a detail person,” explains Lupe. “Everything has to be just right.” “We’re eager to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with one of our country’s best traditions,” continues Lupe. “So for the entire month of May, our world-class margaritas are just $3.00.” And it gets even better. The Carnitas Plate is now a permanent menu item, and don’t miss out on the “Have It Your Way” stuffed avocados—made with beef or chicken fajita, shrimp, or a rainbow selection of fresh veggies. With specials like these, plus green enchiladas, chile rellenos, Mercy’s hand-constructed nachos spilling over with marinated fajita beef or chicken, chicken flautas and out-of-this-world desserts such as sopapillas and flan, your tastebuds will be throwing their own Cinco de Mayo celebration. “A loving thank you to our regulars and our new customers who come in and enjoy our food,” says Lupe. “Jaime, Rigo, Leo and I appreciate your many years of loyalty and support. We can’t wait to see you again!”

A Hodge Podge of Unique Items and Gifts

ana Leon grew up in a small rural town in Georgia. Upon graduation, she enlisted in the United States Air Force. After training as a nurse and experiencing life as an airman, Jana decided to begin raising a family. She married fellow Air Force veteran Michael, and the couple had two children. For 12 years, Jana taught in public schools while raising her family. Until life changed. Michael suffered from depression and tragically ended his life. Struggling to find balance as a single mom, Jana was losing her love for teaching. “With the stressors that teachers face on a daily basis, I wanted to get out before my mentality as an educator shifted towards the negative,” says Jana. “It is important to LOVE what I do.” Jana moved to this area when she married Lawrence “Ray” Leon, also a veteran and a Lieutenant with HPD. It was Ray who suggested Jana follow her childhood dream of owning a little shop. Jana says, “With all that had happened, I knew I had to take every day and run with it.” Rust and Ruffles is located in the shopping center in front of Greatwood. The name is a nod to Jana’s rural roots where her mom could make all things—even the old—look and feel feminine and beautiful. “We carry a bit of everything,” says Jana. “Boutique clothing, jewelry, handmade soaps, children’s items, jams, and even pet items. My passion is promoting up-and-coming businesses. My shop is a hodge podge of everything...a place you can find unique gifts. Items you just can’t find anywhere else!” Veteran-owned and operated, a portion of all Rust and Ruffles proceeds goes to The 100 Club, Wounded Warrior Project and The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. “I want to raise awareness,” says Jana. “I want my late husband remembered for his legacy and accomplishments, not the way his life

Dana says, “I went into Human Resources. So when my mom started having health issues, my parents relocated.” After Pam’s mom passed, she found herself looking into different living options for her dad, Dr. Allen Perkins. “Dad has macular degeneration,” says Pam. “He’s legally blind. He’s in assisted living, but I wanted an extra set of eyes and ears. Someone he really enjoys spending time with.” Seniors Helping Seniors matches seniors who need a hand with mature, active women and men who have a passion for helping others. Pam’s dad was matched with Goldie. Goldie visits Dr. Perkins three days a week and takes him into Houston for outings on Mondays. “Goldie is lively,” says Pam. “She is just the shot of vim and vigor that Dad needed. Since they are closer in age (Dr. Perkins is 90 and Goldie is in her 70s), they have shared experiences that they can talk about—like Frank Sinatra, Carol Burnett and World War II. Goldie is also able to help with his mobility issues and his visual limitations. She assists Dad with activities like exercise and bingo. This isn’t a caregiver relationship, they are companions. And it’s of great comfort to my brother and me to know Goldie is there. Goldie is another avenue of support and communication.” It’s easy to see why Seniors Helping Seniors is a win-win situation. aura Riahi is a retired FBISD teacher. Her husband Sam is retired from hotel management. Laura says, “Sam met Jasmine Naderi, DDS back when Dr. Naderi was attending dental school. We became friends. You can really tell a person’s personality over time. Dr. Naderi has an honesty about her that you just want in a person that’s in charge of anything to do with your health. It’s something you seek out and hang on to when you find it. We switched to Dr. Naderi as soon as she became a dentist back in 2002, and we’ve been seeing her ever since!” “Dr. Naderi is a very conservative-minded doctor,” continues Laura. “Which I like. Her bedside manner is just incredible, and she treats every patient individually and meets the needs of your timeframe and budget. This is not one-size-fits-all dentistry. Sam and I are in our mid 60s. Between us, we’ve needed several procedures. When I needed a few crowns, Dr. Naderi encouraged me to wait until I could do them all at once, so they would all match. She never pushes you to get things done just so she can pocket the money. She is not aggressive at all. Dr. Naderi is a perfectionist to a fault. I’ve had severe TMJ for 30 years. Dr. Naderi now has it under control. She has adjusted and changed my mouthguard as needed to get it perfect...at no extra cost to me. I never feel taken advantage of.” Of course, behind every great doctor there’s a great staff. “The front desk at Best Dental is very informative,” explains Laura. “They can tell you exactly where you stand: What your insurance is paying and what your cost will be.
