entucky attorney—turned mom—turned fitness instructor— turned Texas lawyer Margie Connolly is your attorney for all of your family law and estate planning needs. Margie’s career path began with a Criminal Justice degree from Xavier University and a law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. “I was admitted to the Kentucky Bar in 1986 and started practicing,” says Margie. “I clerked for both a county and federal judge, and I also worked for the Kentucky Attorney General on criminal appeals. After the birth of my second child, I went into private practice...focusing on family law and estate planning. When my third child was born, we moved to Houston with my husband’s job. At that time I retired from law to focus on my family...or at least I thought I retired at the time!” Always a fitness enthusiast, Margie became a full time mom and a part time fitness instructor. But when you’re good at what you do...things come your way. “My work in fitness led to a full time position at the Fort Bend Family YMCA where I was the Program Director of Wellness. I love fitness, and in addition to the YMCA, I’ve held various fitness instructor positions in our community.” Her children grown, in 2009 Margie transitioned back to law. “I became a paralegal for Fort Bend Lawyers Care—the nonprofit corporation providing low-income Fort Bend County residents with equal access to justice through volunteer lawyers. This was a lifechanging moment. It’s a great organization with a great cause, and it’s helped shape my career. I passed the Texas Bar in 2013 on the first try, and opened my private family law and estate planning practice.” “Family law is an emotional situation. I’m divorced myself, and I understand that when a family is falling apart, you want as smooth a transition as possible for everyone involved. I’m here to help with all aspects of divorce and custody, and preparing for death...including wills and trusts.” Private practice in full swing, Margie has stayed involved in this community. Today she serves as Secretary on the Fort Bend Lawyers Care Board of Directors and is co-chairing their upcoming Justice For All Luncheon. “It’s a great opportunity to acknowledge our volunteer lawyers and everyone that dedicates time and resources to our cause.” You’ll also find her giving her time to the Sugar Land Rotary Club, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels, and Child Advocates of Fort Bend. And Margie remains a fitness enthusiast! She’s a 2011 Texas Ironman and can be seen teaching yoga and indoor cycling in the Sugar Land area.

ver wonder what it takes to be named “Most Supporting Physician” and “Patient’s Choice?” Well, you might have to talk to one of Dr. Ulises Baltazar’s patients to find out! Karen Kaufman and her family have lived in Sugar Land off and on since 1990. She first visited Dr. Baltazar in 2012. She had already heard good things about him, so when her varicose veins became too painful to ignore, she made an appointment with Dr. Baltazar and found out why he gets such high marks from his patients. Karen says, “Dr. Baltazar takes a lot of time with you. He really listens and explains his recommended course of treatment. He talks to you like a friend...he doesn’t rush you and he never talks down to you.” Dr. Ulises Baltazar is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with special certification in Vascular Surgery. He is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic, a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers as well as leg swelling. Dr. Baltazar has been diagnosing and treating diseases of the veins for over ten years. He stays on top of current developments and innovative procedures, but his personal pleasure comes from getting to know his patients and treating them with the timeliness and care they deserve. Karen says, “Dr. Baltazar knows what’s going on in your life and helps plan your care around that.” When Karen needed a follow-up visit and a family event kept her from coming in on a Friday, Dr. Baltazar gave her his cell phone number so she could come in on Saturday instead. Karen underwent another procedure this year. “Dr. Baltazar is still the nicest guy ever. He and his staff work well together.” Over the years Karen has referred several friends to Dr. Baltazar and also noted that he has gotten high praise on her neighborhood Facebook page. If you have been living with the pain of varicose veins or might be too embarrassed to think about wearing shorts and capri pants this coming summer, call Dr. Baltazar for an initial consultation and find out for yourself why he has been named “Most Supporting Physician” and “Patient’s Choice.” Tell them Karen sent you.

MOMMY MAKEOVER While motherhood is good for the soul, it may be hard on the body... by Olivia Cane
If
you’re a mom, then you know that motherhood is equal parts losing your mind and finding your soul. Keeping track of diaper bags and pacifiers, lunch boxes and backpacks—plus all those late nights spent soothing a sick child and early mornings getting kids off to school can leave any mom looking and feeling a little worse for the wear. When you finally do have time to look in the mirror, it’s hard to recognize yourself. Stretch marks on your tummy, loose skin that no dieting or exercise can make right again, breasts that look a lot less fluffy than they used to, a ten pound luggage set beneath each eye. Dr. Eric Humble of Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery has perfected the art of making your outside reflect how you feel on the inside... which is why the “Mommy Makeover” is one of his most popular procedures. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, he is an expert in restoring you to your slim, youthful, perky pre-mommy state. During your free consultation, he can custom-design a plan of action that will address that loose skin on your tummy, eliminate stretch marks, restore the fullness and beauty of your breasts (or give you the silhouette you always wished you’d had!), using both surgical and non-surgical procedures...or both. Imagine having an hourglass figure again. Imagine feeling confident and beautiful in a piece of lingerie that you wear not because it covers your “trouble spots,” but because it showcases your bodacious new body. Imagine making your grand entrance into a party, a restaurant, even your kids’ PTA meeting, and knowing you no longer have to hide or camouflage your body. Being self-conscious stops the minute you no longer feel as though you have something to be self-conscious about. From long experience, Dr. Humble knows that helping to correct “imperfections” can bring back more than a beautiful, youthful appearance. It can restore his patients’ love of life. “Sometimes the best way to happiness is working from the outside in,” he explains. “When a superhero like a mom has one less thing to worry about, she can be even more present for her family. So that’s what I do—whether it’s a breast lift (with or without implants,) a tummy tuck, liposuction, thigh lift or one of the many other procedures or services we offer.” By his own admission, Dr. Humble knows a superhero of his own: Dr. Lin Humble, his wife and mother of his two sons. “She’s beautiful on the outside as well as the inside. Everyone who meets Lin feels the same way our sons and I do about her.” Before and After Photos available by visiting www.beautybecomesyou.com Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery and Med Spa 281-313-0555 | 16926 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77479

An Irish Heart With a Texas Soul
T
here’s a reason family-owned Clancy’s Public House on FM 359 in Richmond was recently voted “Best New Restaurant in Fort Bend County.” They dish out Texas-sized portions of your favorites with an Irish twist—a nod to the family’s heritage. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do,” says owner Sean Bielstein. “When I was a little kid I would watch my dad barbeque...and as soon as they trusted me to jump on that pit, I was cooking.” Don’t be fooled by the word “pub.” This is a full service, family-oriented restaurant with two in-house chefs. Regulars can’t get enough of the ribeyes and sirloins...and the chicken fried steak is quite possibly the biggest in the county. “Our Clancy’s Sauce wings are a must try,” says Sean. “This sauce is Irish green...it’s spicy with a delicious kick. I’ve been asked more than once if I could bottle it up and let people take it home!”
And the selections at the bar don’t disappoint. Clancy’s has more than 30 beers on tap. High-end liquors like Midleton Irish Whiskey and Johnny Walker Blue are always available. With three Golden Tee machines, darts and a jukebox...this pub has everything. “We really cater to our families during lunch and dinner,” says Sean. “But come 10 or 11pm on Thursday, Friday, Saturday...we’re more of a pub until 2am.” Planning a graduation party or other gathering? Clancy’s Dublin Room can accommodate up to 80 people and the Shamrock Room 25 to 30. And Clancy’s is committed to giving back. “We love fundraising nights,” says Sean. “Schools, churches, and charities...pick a night and a portion of the proceeds go back to your organization!” Drop in to Clancy’s for Irish Cinco de Mayo and enjoy
by Amy Sharp Irish fajitas, Cinco de Shepherd’s Pie and an Irish margarita...or maybe a Mexican specialty beer from Silver Eagle’s one day “tap takeover.” Or just stop in for Happy Hour. With food and drink specials, it runs MondayFriday, 3-7 and all day on Saturday. Coming soon...Irish Sunday brunch. Sláinte!

A Unique Car Buying

orma Reyna, owner of Executive Massage Center, has known Don Kerstetter for many years. The two are in the Exchange Club of Sugar Land together, and she’s his massage therapist. Don is the owner of Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land. “For years Don told me I needed a car,” says Norma. “But I didn’t...I was perfectly happy with my Saturn convertible. Then one day I mentioned to Don that my bike needed a car. Not me--but my bike...a car that I could equip with my bike rack and take my bike different places around town for rides.” Naturally, Don told Norma to stop by the dealership and they could work something out. “No way,” says Norma. “I hate big purchases. I told him to pick something out for me. My only requirements were the car needed room for my massage table and chair, and it needed a receiver hitch for my bike rack.” Don recommended the Chevy Equinox to Norma. “It’s a safe car, it has a lot of space, and it’s what my daughter drives.” says Don. “I told him ‘Perfect, I’ll take it,’” says Norma. Don wanted Norma to come in for a test drive, even had General Manager Mark Kolon call and invite her to the dealership, but Norma
refused. “Really...if the car was good enough for Don’s daughter, it’s good enough for me.” Then one day Norma walked out of a restaurant and saw the perfect little red SUV. She walked up to it and lo and behold...it was a Chevy Equinox. “I took a picture of it and sent it to Mark with a message that said, ‘This is it...do you have one?’ They had three. They got it ready for me, including adding the receiver hitch for my bike rack. I went in, signed the papers and drove away. I never took a test dive. It was that easy and I love this car!” Not only does Norma love her car, she loves the service department at Classic Chevy. “Irma Velasquez is my service advisor and she is fantastic. I just trust her. I send her a text when I’m coming in, or she shoots me a text that it’s time for service. I feel very comfortable leaving my car with her.” Norma will step through the doors of Classic Chevy for another new car soon...but this time it won’t be for herself. “I’m the massage therapist for the Houston Ballet. One of my ballerinas defected from Cuba. She’s been saving for a down payment, and she just got her license. I’m taking her to Don...I know he’ll take care of her.”

Moms Recognize a Good Neighbor by Sarah Warburton
hether she’s treating a skinned knee or an upset tummy, moms know how to make kids feel better. But when a kiss and a band-aid aren’t enough, moms turn to a neighbor they can trust…Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. says, “We were surprised and humbled to be awarded the Neighbor’s Choice Award, and we reaffirm our commitment to taking care of the families of Fort Bend. I know moms (and dads) have full plates, so we try to do our part to make your lives a little easier.” What’s the number one way to make mom’s life easier? Keep the kids feeling their best! Dr. Campbell says, “We can mix up medications without dyes, allergens, or additives…and we’ve got all kinds of flavors and delivery methods—from droppers to gummies to pacifiers. If you have a little one recovering from a tonsillectomy, undergoing chemotherapy, or suffering from GI distress, I can compound Ondansetron cream for unsettled stomachs. Just rub inside your child’s wrist and it knocks out nausea. When baby’s got reflux or big brother has heartburn, we can compound Prilosec and Prevacid into suspensions that are Ph balanced for efficacy and mixed without any harsh medicine taste. And if your baby’s suffering from chronic diaper rash that nothing seems to solve, I have a secret recipe. Just ask and we’ll whip you up a batch of ‘magic’ diaper rash ointment tailored to your baby’s symptoms. Chat with us about the challenges you face and we’ll see if we can’t compound a solution!”
Dr. Campbell knows a thing or two about family life. This busy father of four says, “The kids—Cole, Chloe, Catilyn and baby Claire—are so excited about treating mom Rakel to something special this Mother’s Day. We’d like to thank her for all the amazing Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy things she does for our “If our staff can’t make it… family. The Fun of Being a Tooth Fairy
T

here are two things Dr. Bianca Sanchez of Little People’s Dentistry hears from parents all the time. The first is, “Boy, my dentist office sure didn’t look like this when I was a kid.” And the other—“My kids actually beg me to bring them here!” “We designed everything with a child’s perspective in mind,” says Dr. Sanchez. “In fact, I drew on all my favorite childhood memories to create a welcoming, light-filled, magical space. Happy kids are happy patients...and happy patients are much easier to treat.” The first thing Dr. Sanchez’s beloved little patients see when they walk into her office is the counter shaped like a real California surfboard covered in real California surf stickers. Surf dudes and Wahinis from ages 1-17 find it very easy to relax and “hang ten” while getting their teeth cleaned. And after a good exam, they get to pick a prize—maybe a shiny balloon from the clown-shaped dispenser. There’s custard signs and movie posters, video games and toys hanging from hooks that look like skateboards, brightly colored hopscotch tiles and a fun house mirror...even “discovery boxes” in the waiting room where kids can make suggestions and win cool stuff. It’s easy to see why kids (and their parents!) love to visit Dr. Sanchez. Another reason Dr. Sanchez is so popular...she genuinely loves kids! In fact, her practice nearly coincides with her son Diego’s birthday. They were both “launched” in 2009. And now Diego is sister Gemma Belle’s big brother. “They’ve taught me everything I know about understanding little people,” says Dr. Sanchez. A pediatric dentist must undergo an additional two to three years of speLittle People’s Dentistry cialized study after becoming a dentist. Child psychology, growth and devel“Because Kidz Are People, Too.” opment, and special health care needs for children are emphasized. 281-261-0020 “To do this well, we have to love what we do,” Dr. Sanchez explains. 4706 Riverstone Blvd., Suite 200 (behind Kohl’s in Riverstone) “Every child who comes in is truly special in my eyes.” www.LittlePeoplesDentistry.com

THE
PHILOSOPHY
A Keller Williams Experience
D
arrell and Sonja Harris found their way to Houston through Darrell’s job. But when Darrell retired last fall, the family wanted to sell their Fort Bend County house and move home to Michigan. “Sharon Parker with KW Southwest (Keller Williams) was very visible in our neighborhood,” says Darrell. “So when we were ready to sell, we gave her a call.” “With our home on the market, we had two sales fall through before we found our buyers. Sharon was a fantastic asset through this process, keeping our spirits up. With a contract in place and our closing date approaching, Sonja and I hired movers and put everything but our essentials in PODS. We wanted to be out on time and on our way to Michigan.” Then things started to go downhill. KWSW agent Sharon says, “The buyer’s lender terminated the loan in the process of closing... but both the buyers and their agent did not know, and we were told the day of closing.” “This was devastating to my wife and I,” says Darrell. “We were in jeopardy of losing the sale altogether. When we moved to Texas, my company helped us move. This time we were on our own. I had a tight budget to get us back to Michigan, and now I was paying for my stuff to sit in PODS and my family was sleeping on air mattresses and eating out because we had an empty kitchen. We were unnecessarily spending a lot of money... we needed the sale.” Sharon talked to the lender but yielded no success...so she started brainstorming. “I reached out to a loan officer I’d known for years and got a number for the home office. They took a look at it, reopened the loan, worked it up...and we were able to close two weeks later.” The Harris’ were overjoyed. “Sharon absolutely went above and beyond and made things happen. We were super appreciative, as were the buyers. I would have really been in a jam had we lost that sale. Today we are back home in Michigan and we couldn’t be happier!” Our KWSW market center ranks in the top 25 in their region of over 700 offices worldwide. “We aim to be your coach in everything realty related,” says Sharon. “We work with you and educate you, pulling in the necessary resources at our disposal to help you. In Darrell and Sonja’s case, that meant helping the potential buyer secure their loan so the Harris’ could keep within their budget and retire home to Michigan. Everyone’s story is different, and we adapt to help you.” Ready to buy or sell? Call the team at KWSW today!

Real Luxury by Sara Adams
Houston Investigation Service
(HIS) opened its doors in 2003. They have earned a solid reputation doing investigations and surveillance for most major insurance companies and several large corporations. However, the work Christina Ramirez enjoys the most is meeting with individual clients and hearing their stories. She says, “It’s not always a cheating lover, nasty divorce battle or a disgruntled ex-employee. Some of my favorite cases are the ones where we can reunite people. We’ve brought old friends together and introduced long-lost (and sometimes unknown) family members to one another. These cases are so gratifying for me because I am able to give them answers and put their wandering minds at rest. It’s nice when we can deliver a happy ending.” When they opened HIS, Christina’s husband, Rodney Ramirez, had over ten years experience as a Private Investigator. He handled the investigations while she offered administrative support. Christina was used to the traditional “8 to 5” business world of the oil and gas industry, but the more involved she became with the family business, the more she fell in love with it. Christina earned her Private Investigator’s license over twelve years ago. “Most of the time when people meet me they have a preconceived idea about Private Investigators. Many people tell me, ‘Nice to meet you, but I hope I never have to use your services.’ But I believe that everyone can use a Private Investigator at some point in their life...they just don’t know it yet. Other significant cases for me are concerned parents who were worried their adolescent or adult children were going down the wrong path or doing something illegal. After observing them we’ve been able to put some parents’ minds at ease...and for other parents they were able to take action with the information they received. Either way¸ having the facts eased their anxiety. I like to think of the serHouston Investigation Service vices we offer at HIS as a luxury 713-807-7070 for your peace of mind.”

o you ever find yourself wondering what modern day Texas residents would do without air conditioning? Air conditioning changed the way we built our houses and designed our cars. It’s the reason we can have highrise office buildings (imagine working in one of those without a way to make it cooler!) If air conditioning weren’t available during Southeast Texas’s notoriously brutal summers...there would probably be some pretty disturbing headlines in the local paper! Fortunately, we don’t have to go through anything quite so dramatic because people like Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat are working behind the scenes, making sure everything runs smoothly—especially where it counts, which is in your own home. “The best way you can save money on both your energy bill and any unexpected repairs is to schedule an appointment for me to come out and tune up your air conditioner,” says Brian. “Preventive maintenance of your air conditioning unit will not only save you hundreds of dollars later on, it will ensure
that your system is working at peak efficiency. Plus, the last thing you want is a mechanical breakdown that leaves you suffering for even a few hours in the middle of a Fort Bend County summer.” So what happens if your air conditioner needs more than just a tune-up? Brian recommends installing a TRANE Variable Speed XV20i system with TruComfort technology. “TRANE has the best air conditioner on the market. It runs at the exact right speed necessary to keep you comfortable—no freezing cold spots or overheated ‘dead zones.’ When temperatures are at their highest, you can depend on your TRANE Variable Speed to be there for you...saving you money and removing humidity. It’s what I have in my own home and I can tell you that the system is foolproof. It’s quiet, comfortable, effective and a real energy saver.” A TRANE Variable Speed XV20i also comes with 0% financing until 2021 or, if you prefer, a $1500 rebate. Centerpoint Energy also rebates up to $1500 and gives tax credits, which means there has never
been a better time to replace your system. For three generations now, Jackson Air and Heat has worked to make the Sugar Land area habitable and climate controlled. “My dad was one of eleven children,” says Brian. “He came here from Oklahoma in the late ‘70s. Right away, he saw a need for a fair and reliable air conditioning business.” Today, with several Angie’s List “Super Service” awards and the BBB Award of Excellence, Brian Jackson and Jackson Air and Heat continue to slam dunk the ball when it comes to great service!

If He Can, He Will by Amy Sharp Betty Greenwood’s grandson Jordyn was born with a chromosomal disorder. “It has no label,” says Betty. “We were told he would always be delayed in skills. That he would never grow, never sit, never talk and never walk. We were told he would not live past five years old.” “The first time we realized Jordyn could learn, he was sitting with my 12 year old niece. She was clapping his hands. We told her to say ‘clap’ each time she clapped. Then we told her to stop, and just say the word. She said ‘clap’ and he clapped! He made the connection!” “If he can, he will.” That became Betty’s mantra. “We decided that if this is who Jordyn was, we were going to give him the skills we could at every age.” Betty found MedCare Pediatric Group—the comprehensive care group for children age birth to 21—through Jordyn’s insurance. Jordyn receives occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy at MedCare. They also work with Betty on a home health plan. “We were so blessed to find them, because they believe in Jordyn. Right now we are focused on what he can do, and they embrace that. They incorporate our ideas and wants with their knowledge and expertise. Jordyn is at the center two days a week, and the rest of the time we work with him at home. These fantastic therapists assist us—guide us—in helping Jordyn achieve his goals.” Now nine years old, Jordyn is doing things Betty was told he would never do. He walks with assistance. He sits. He’s verbalizing sounds...and he’s making more and more connections. “He knocks on the back door when he wants the trampoline...and just last week he got himself in and was bouncing around on his bottom. He’s not strapped in a wheelchair. MedCare gave him the courage to do these things through his therapy...they gave him his freedom!” Barely able to hold back the tears, Betty says, “MedCare made all of this possible. They’ve earned Jordyn’s trust, and in turn he works with them. We never feel that we are just a number or that they are just punching a clock...it’s all about Jordyn. There has to be a place for these children, and MedCare is it. Unless you have a child with these needs, you cannot appreciate what these skilled people give to your child. It’s more than meds and school...it’s heart. And MedCare has the heart for it. We would never take him anywhere else.” MedCare Pediatric Group accepts Medicaid and will work with any insurance company. Above and Beyond by Olivia Cane
C
ompanies backed by families that go above and beyond...it’s the quintessential definition of the hard working American family. Alan and Jennifer Burkhalter have built a plumbing legacy right here in Fort Bend County. It all started more than 40 years ago when Alan took his first plumbing job at the age of 17...and today it’s a family affair with a reputation of honesty and integrity. Not only is Jennifer mom to the three grown Burkhalter boys—Luke, Jake, and Beau—hers is the warm, vibrant voice you hear when you call Alan’s Plumbing about your plumbing problems. She also wears a lot of different hats, dispatching her master plumber husband Alan, her sons Luke and Beau, Alan’s brother Chris and Jeff Johnson who are all journeyman licensed plumbers. Her son Jake and apprentices Jaime, Trevor, Kyle and Robert are all working towards
their journeyman license. This dynamic team is at your service to install water heaters, staunch water leaks and rebuild broken plumbing all over the Sugar Land area. “One of the reasons we’ve won the Reader’s Choice Award for the last ten years is because of Jennifer’s super efficiency and the fact that she has a great way with folks,” says Alan. Another reason Alan’s Plumbing is the regular recipient of the Reader’s Choice Award is because the Burkhalters have devoted themselves to providing the best possible customer service at the fairest price. “What we won’t do is make false promises just to get your business. That’s not the way we operate and that’s definitely not the reason we’ve been in business for as long as we have. But some plumbing companies bank on the fact that when an emergency hits, you won’t have the time to call around. They
get their foot in the door by offering you a ‘special deal’ upfront and then bottom load your final bill with unforeseen expenses. At Alan’s Plumbing, we earn your trust by being fair, honest and true to our word. No surprises.” To Alan and Jennifer Burkhalter, family is everything—and the concept of family extends to the community they’ve been a part of for so many years. Alan’s grandfather even served as an ironworker on the San Jacinto Monument! “We love the Sugar Land area and we are proud to give our friends and neighbors the kind of service we would want our own families to have. Anyone contemplating divorce willingly or unwillingly can reap the benefits of Ronique’s caring legal, spiritual, and personal experience in her book, From Divorce to Deliverance: Divorce Doesn’t (Have to) Mean Devastation, available through Amazon.
oard Certified attorney Ronique Bastine Robinson—founder of Bastine Law Group—recently won an appeal in a published opinion regarding division of retirement benefits. “In this case,” says Ronique, “the couple divorced eight years into the husband’s twenty year career with the fire and police departments. At the time of divorce, his wife (my client,) was awarded half of the money he had contributed. But when he was eligible to retire twelve years later, he was awarded additional benefits for his twenty years of service.” In the couple’s divorce decree, Ronique’s client was entitled to “any and all sums” related to the retirement plan. Ronique says, “This left the door open. She was entitled to half of what he was awarded for his twenty years, not just his payroll contributions during the marriage... because those twenty years could not of happened without the eight years he was married to my client. It’s a good lesson in watching your language...the wording of this divorce decree was the turning point in winning this opinion.” The team at Bastine Law takes a firm, yet practical approach to family law. They’re here to help you navigate through the legal system and all of the legalese involved. As a great believer in educating the public on the different aspects of family law, Ronique recently appeared on ABC13’s Crossroads talking about parental alienation. “Divorced or separated parents are another great example of when to watch your language. Disparaging remarks about the other parent creates parental alienation, and it can be detrimental for the children involved.” Bastine Law Group can help you navigate emotionally difficult situations like divorce with grace and strength, so that you can begin the next chapter in your life with confidence. (And they’ll take care of the legal language too!)

here are three basic problems with traditional makeup,” explains Deborah Akers of Infinity Makeup. “One, it goes on and comes off, usually on your nice light-colored blouse. Two, it’s almost guaranteed to fail you when you’re dripping with sweat or shedding tears. And three, if it’s too obvious, it actually hides your beauty instead of highlighting it.” Deborah knows. For fifteen years, it has been her passion to show women a better way: Professional Permanent Makeup. “No more smudgy eyeliners, feathered lipsticks and fading eyebrow pencils,” says Deb. “Cosmetic tattooing actually looks better than regular makeup. It gives you a soft, completely natural look whether you’re sleeping, swimming or working out. The process is pain free. And you won’t find thick, heavy permanent makeup here. I specialize in color theory, choosing the best shades to complement your skin tone. It’s nice not to wake up with naked eyes in the morning, especially since the older we get...we just can’t see up close as well as we used to. When doing eyebrows, I shade the color in and also do hair strokes to make your eyebrows look more natural, rather than filling them in solid and getting the stenciled-on look. I also specialize in permanent makeup corrections. If you’ve had some bad permanent makeup in the past, I can help you with correcting it. Do you have a scar that has been bugging you? I can add pigment back into your skin to help make your scar less noticeable. My studio is located inside the offices of board certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Altamira...so I work closely with some really great people.” Deb’s office also offers Botox, Dysport, Dermal fillers, hair removal, Micro-needling, mole and skin tag removal, Photofacials and skin care services...along with a full line of Image skincare products. “I love giving women the gift of looking radiant the moment they get out of bed. HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
He Gave Me Myself Back

tacy Clyburn lived in chronic pain for quite some time. “I had possible diagnoses of arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue,” says Stacy. “Plus I had a lot of muscle issues. I was getting to where I would wake up, and count the hours until I could lay down again. It was maybe a one and a half hour period. I was quickly becoming very immobile.” Stacy has a friend that seeks treatment with Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Land Health Center. The friend convinced Stacy to go with her. “I went in and did the consultation, and the whole process was great. It’s a very relaxing environment, and everyone there—including Dr. Harris—is very nice. Dr. Harris thought I needed treatment. He thought he could help me, so he put together a plan.” Within the first two weeks, Stacy could tell a difference. “Not only did the pain lessen, but my range of motion increased. I became more rested, more relaxed and felt less stressed. I didn’t even realize my spine was that frozen until it started moving again. I felt better and even my attitude was better. It was like Dr. Harris was giving me myself back!” Dr. Harris has been helping patients with back and neck pain heal naturally since 1976. Dr. Harris says, “I try to find and treat the source of the problems with gentle, effective techniques. If we can get you out of pain without drugs or surgery, it’s a healthier option. And with the new technology and techniques, we are more effective than ever before. When I met Stacy, she was in trouble with a lot of pain. That’s no way to live. As she responded well to her treatment program, she told me, ‘You gave me myself back.’ And I responded, ‘Nice. I love it!’” Today Stacy is 90% pain free. “I’m no longer counting the hours...I can now function. It’s a day and night difference. I do have an occasional bad day, but what I love is that Dr. Harris is here when I need him...just a phone call away. I absolutely recommend him to anyone that is living in pain.”

A Dentist Worth Driving For

Come in as a patient and leave as a friend!

ana Patterson’s family has been seeing Stafford area dentist Dr. Thomas Lomonte for 10 years. “We actually heard of him through a family friend. We didn’t feel our previous dentist was doing a great job, and we were looking for higher quality.” “The first time we saw Dr. Lomonte, we loved it,” continues Dana. “He’s very personable, and his office is very relaxed. Even though we live in North Houston, we made him our family dentist. We just like it so much, we are willing to make the drive. Every six months, we go as family—me, my husband Greg, and our two children. Today they’re five and nine, but we started taking the kids when they were two. Dr. Lomonte would just let them sit in the chair and run it up and down like a little ride. Then they would sit and watch Greg and I get our teeth cleaned. Once it was time for them to start official cleanings...there was nothing weird about it. Dr. Lomonte had laid the groundwork in advance, and it made going to the dentist really easy for them.” Between Greg and Dana, they’ve had teeth whitened, cavi-
ties filled, a crown and Invisalign with Dr. Lomonte. “Everything is just seamless and painless. My daughter was a thumbsucker until age six. Right before she turned seven, Dr. Lomonte put in a spacer to start to correct the damage from the thumb. My son was a two finger sucker, and Dr. Lomonte fixed the problem at 13 months with a plastic device placed over the two fingers. I like that he’s always planning for what lies ahead with the two kids.” “I definitely recommend Dr. Lomonte to everyone. Our nanny of nine years is a patient too. When she first saw Dr. Lomonte, she had both dental issues and insurance issues. Dr. Lomonte worked with her on everything...taking the time to explain things to her. Today— like us—she still drives across town to see him for her regular cleanings!”

...and this team understands! CORE Realty agents Ella Guinhawa and Rocio Rosales joined forces with this shared philosophy: “We want to get to know you,” says Ella. “We aren’t here to just put a sign in your yard. We want to hear your wants and needs, your problems and issues... and then figure out how we can help. Everyone’s case is a little different. We look at the situation from every angle and find a solution that works. We’ve been both buyers and sellers...and we know it’s not just business. There are a lot of emotions involved. Our mission is to give our clients what we thought was missing back when we went through this process.” A native of the Philippines, Ella graduated college with a degree in interior design. She spent 10 years working as a marketing executive for a thread company and then owned a travel agency. Here in the US, she’s owned a photography and a photobooth business. “I’ve always had
the entrepreneurial spirit,” says Ella. “I went into real estate several years ago because it allows me to be my own boss while using my marketing and interior design background. I can walk into a house and explain to clients the ins and outs of what works and what doesn’t when staging or buying. It’s the perfect position for me, and I’m doing what I love.” Rocio, a successful property manager, is the perfect complement to Ella’s expertise. “I’ve been working in property management for quite some time,” says Rocio. “And real estate was just a natural progression. My years of experience and extensive training in property management have taught me that it all comes down to building relationships with you. And I love that it’s a position that allows me to give top priority to both my career and my family.” Both ladies call Sugar Land home and understand our competitive real estate market. “It’s both an honor and a privilege to get to know you. When you’re ready to make a move, give us call. Let us see how we can help you!”

ood establishments in and around our fabulous community must adhere to strict building codes and inspections. One requirement of all establishments is regular pest control/extermination. EinStein’s Pub on Mason Road has been open for 20 years. “We just had bad luck with pest control companies for about the first 15 years,” says owner Kristin Megan. “Several companies told us they needed to come every two weeks. We really felt like we were being taken advantage of. Then we found BUGCO about five years ago, and we’ve been with them ever since!” BUGCO is locally owned by John Onofrey. He founded the company with his longtime friend and partner, Chris Millward. “We’ve always worked with Chris,” continues Kristin, “and it has been an amazing difference! BUGCO comes out once a month and we no longer feel like we are being ripped off. We’ve never seen anyone so reliable. They work around our schedule, coming in when the business is closed. They are nice, friendly, and professional, and the service they provide is effective. The difference between BUGCO and some of the other services we tried is amazing to me...we just trust them. Chris has also taken care of a wasp and yellowjacket problem at my mom’s country home. He managed to move all of the pests away from her house.” “Ein Stein” means “one stein.” Coupled with the appealing image of Albert Einstein, EinStein’s Pub is your eccentric local watering hole to grab a stein (or two!) with friends. And with weekly live music from some of the best local bands, DJs & VJs, happy hour drink specials, trivia, darts, pool, Golden Tee Live, and a large selection of food and draft beer, there’s something for everyone. “We’re a family-owned business and a lot of our staff have been with us for more than 15 years,” says Kristin. “We carry 26 beers on draft and take a lot of pride in keeping our gaming machines maintained. We have some of the best pinball machines around!” As Kristin and EinStein’s Pub found out, BUGCO Pest Control has an outstanding reputation for attention to detail in the Greater Houston Area. “We realize that business owners want this required and necessary service performed discreetly,” says BUGCO partner Chris Millward. “And we also realize good commercial pest control providers are hard to come by. Here at BUGCO we vow to do whatever it takes to satisfy your needs. It’s the reason so many of our business clients and residential clients have relied on us for years!”

She put her kids through college, including me. Today, with a daughter of my own, I have joined her in helping grow the business.” It all started many years ago when while searching for work that left her mornings and late afternoons free for her kids, Imelda started cleaning house for a client who lived far across town. “Most of the money she made went to gas and babysitting, but she did a great job,” says Casandra. “In fact, her client was so pleased, he referred her to other clients who referred her to more clients. When I was old enough to clean, I did...polishing doorknobs while my brother wiped down doors. My mom launched her business in 2007 with the support of some wonderful women on our street. helped by watching the kids. Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services exists because of their sweat equity.” Now when Imelda and Casandra hire hardworking moms, they’re able to offer them the flexibility they need in order to care for their families. “The reason our customer satisfaction is so high is because we focus on employee satisfaction. Moms who aren’t distracted by worries about taking care of a sick child or being there for kids when they come home from school do a remarkable job,” explains Casandra. “And all the ‘extras’ that most companies charge you more for are part of our basic service, including blinds, baseboards and ceiling fans. In fact, we never turn down a cleaning project! Just call us and ask what we can do to make your house spotless.” Not only is Mahoney’s House Cleaning fully bonded and insured, they guarantee their services. “I’m so proud of my mom, and I love being a part of what she and her group of incredible ladies have created. Do You Pinch Yourself When You See Your Backyard?

aniel and Sara Johnson do! “We had a pool and we loved it...but it really needed renovating,” says Daniel. “We also wanted an outdoor kitchen and pavilion, but our backyard is oddly configured. While trying to decide what would work, we saw an article about Bratton Pools in a magazine. The featured backyard was very similar to ours. I called and asked if it would be possible to go and see that yard in person. And Mike Bratton gladly obliged.”” Daniel would get other bids and talk to various other companies about ideas for his backyard. “We ultimately chose Bratton Pools. Our decision was based on our conversation with the other homeowners—they’d had a great experience. Plus, it was very reassuring since we could see Bratton’s work first hand, and I just liked Mike a lot. He’s an honest guy and comes across as very straightforward. I immediately felt comfortable with him and trusted him.” The Bratton-built backyard from the magazine became the conceptual inspiration for the Johnson’s backyard. “While we had the concept, there were still a lot of decisions to be made, even during construction. And Pinterest is a game changer in the way you can plan. I frequently had the iPad out in the back-
yard consulting with Mike on ideas...and then he would bring us materials and samples to consider. Design was definitely a moving target and Mike was very helpful with the decisions.” The Johnson’s final design included adding a spa, travertine coping, a new stamped concrete deck and French grey quartz plaster. Their new outdoor kitchen and pavilion includes a beamed ceiling and a Santa Maria grill. Mike Bratton says, “I was more than happy to sit with Daniel and look at pictures of different things he liked (and didn’t like!) It helps us get to know you and create an area that is truly yours. It’s how we operate... everything we do is custom and built to accommodate your lifestyle.” “We still pinch ourselves when we go outside! It truly feels like an extension of our home,” says Daniel. “I’ve worked with enough contractors to know that obstacles will always pop up. What makes a project successful is how responsive the contractor is to those obstacles. Mike is fantastic at communicating and managing a project. And it shows in the finished product. He’s a great guy with a great company that I absolutely recommend.” Bratton Pools ~ 281-988-7700 www.brattonpools.com

Much More than a Theatre in Your Neighborhood f you’ve driven down the Grand Parkway lately, you’ve seen the magnificent 180,000 square foot Santikos Palladium AVX. The building—with its 40 foot columns—is reminiscent of a legendary Greek palace, paying homage to the Santikos family heritage. Santikos Theatres was founded in 1911 when Louis Santikos—a Greek immigrant— purchased a small theatre in Waco, igniting his path to becoming a pioneer in the Texas motion picture industry in San Antonio. In 1927, Louis sold much of his business and moved back to Greece with his wife. That same year his son John was born. Louis became a successful film distributor in Greece, but fear for his family’s safety was strong after Nazi occupation was followed by Civil War in Greece...and the Santikos family returned to San Antonio and Louis rebuilt his movie business. After John graduated from St. Mary’s University, he became an apprentice to his father, ultimately taking over the business. John learned the theatre business from the ground up. In 2013, Santikos Theatres expanded to Fort Bend County with the Santikos Palladium AVX. When you set foot inside a Santikos complex, you are immediately immersed in opulent grandeur…this is not your typical movie theatre! Fort Bend’s finest entertainment destination provides the latest advances in cinema technology. “Six of our 22 luxurious auditoriums are equipped with AVX, providing the ultimate audio and visual viewing experience and the highest standards of projection quality. This includes 4K digital projection, wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling screens and Dolby
Atmos premium sound system,” says Art Seago, President of Santikos Theatres. “These screens are 80 feet wide, making them the largest screens in Houston.” Other amenities include 16 lane bowling with full service bar, cafés with a variety of dine-in or take-out options and Starbucks coffee. Four auditoriums feature luxury recliners and VIP Service with in-movie dining and friendly servers ready to bring your order directly to your seat. The Santikos Palladium AVX is also the perfect location for corporate events and functions. With auditoriums that have seating capabilities of fifty to 400, it is ideal for small to large corporate events, groups, non-profit outings, birthday party celebrations, and special occasions. “We are proud to carry on the legacy of John L. ver heard of the “summer slide?” We’re not talking about the exciting rides at area waterparks...we’re talking about your child’s education. Studies show that children slip back an average of 25% in reading skills and lose about 2.6 months of gradelevel equivalency in math without educational activities over the summer. But how do you stop your child from sliding down this slippery slope? Learning Specialist Betsy de Vega, in conjunction with her bou-

Betsy says, “After meeting with your child and doing some intial assessments, we’ll put together a customized program where we combine cognitive training skills exercises plus teach enhanced organizational, study and test taking strategies…all in one-on-one sessions. The net result is a student who can attack and process any subject much more effectively than if he or she had attended a traditional tutor. And because we believe in continuity in education, once school starts in the fall your ECN program includes one of our staff personally meeting with your child’s teacher and school to advocate for your child and his or her needs. It’s an optional part the program, but it’s really helpful for children who struggle or just learn differently.” Ready for not just a summer boost, but a total change? KnILE Prep Academy (KPA) is now conducting open enrollment for next school year for grades three through twelve.
“Ours is a boutique school where we tailor your child’s education to his or her needs. We’ve been doing it since 2008, and we know it works. We work in small ratios in a blended environment, using technologies and innovative strategies to reach each and every student. Jenni Leonetti, owner of Leonetti Graphics, started the business with her husband Donald back 1992. “We had just graduated from the Art Institute of Houston,” says Jenni. “And we started making logos and brochures in our tiny apartment. We did all of the artwork by hand, and we would be at Kinko’s until two or three in the morning getting stuff printed. One day a high school friend from Dulles asked Donald if he could make a t-shirt...and Donald said, ‘Of course I can!’ We knew nothing about shirts...but we got it done. And the rest is history!” Although Donald is no longer with us, Jenni, Donald’s sister JoAnn, and the incredible staff at Leonetti Graphics are carrying on his legacy. Today Leonetti Graphics has a 6250 sq ft warehouse for printing and the storefront is located in an old fire station in Missouri City. Leonetti’s offers many services, including screen printing, embroidery, signs, banners and specialty items. The Leonetti’s are native Houstonians and have been in the Sugar Land area since 1981. Jenni hails from the Midwest. Both Jenni and JoAnn grew up in wholesome families and they extend that same hometown feel and hospitality to their customers. “We are truly a family business,” says Jenni. “Paul, our office manager, is Donald’s childhood best friend. Our shop manager Mike is a friend of Donald’s from Dulles. We have incredible graphic designers on staff, and our customers become part of our family too.” Back in 1992 on May 30th, “Service with a smile,” continues JoAnn. when it all began... “That’s what we provide. Can’t make it to our store? We’ll bring samples to you. You can design and order shirts on our website...and if you have a question, you can call us and we can talk. We offer special pricing for nonprofits and we are always open to helping local charitable organizations and fundraisers. We aim to provide personal service to all of our customers.” Donald was a huge asset to this community. Jenni and JoAnn carry on that legacy too. Jenni is a Leader for Young Life at Ridge Point High School. JoAnn is an active member of the Oyster Creek Rotary. Both have raised their children here in Fort Bend County. Transforming Hair Identities

ouston native Tanissa Carmon has been creating and transforming hair for more than 20 years. “A new hairstyle, new color or new haircut inspires beauty in women and it changes the way a woman feels about herself,” says Tanissa. After unofficially creating hair while living in Europe, Tanissa returned to the U.S. in the early 90’s and enrolled in beauty school at the Tony & Guy Beauty Academy in Colorado Springs. “There I honed my passion—my art—of making people beautiful.” Today Tanissa is the owner and hairstylist at Untourage Salon Retreat right here in Sugar Land... where stylists, models, athlete’s wives, business women, musicians, and housewives go to get new looks. Tanissa’s broad skill set includes textured haircutting and color placement techniques like balayage and ombre. As both a supplier and an installer of Raw Temple hair and custom lace wigs, she’s also an expert in hair weaving. For curly hair, she offers Pravana Smoothing Treatments. “I always use exclusive, top-of-line products,” says Tanissa. “And Pravana is one of the best. It contains no formaldehyde...so it’s a safer formula with the same results!” Tanissa lives in Missouri City, where she raised two men who are now in college. She’s also a partner in
the Smahrt Girl Foundation—the non-profit organization dedicated to developing 12 to 19 year old girls, helping them realize their dreams. Tanissa participates in the Smahrt Girl “Dressing the Dream” event by collecting prom dresses, shoes and accessories for underprivileged girls. “I love when I make my clients feel beautiful, and the feeling they get when they see their new look,” says Tanissa. “I call it transforming my clients’ hair identities...one strand at a time. ichele Fisher is a former Houston radio personality and the owner and talent behind Michele Fisher Voice Overs. And she’s also a mom. Like every mom, when her child is hurting, she wants the best care as quickly as possible. “My son once fell off his skateboard and busted his chin. We had an absolutely horrible experience in a traditional ER, and ended up with a botched stitch job. I knew the next time my family needed emergency care, I needed a better option.” So when Michele’s teenage daughter returned from a day at Galveston with a severe sunburn, she remembered St. Michael’s. “I thought Emma had sun poisoning. She was super itchy and running a fever. I knew of Dr. Shannon Orsak—co-founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms— through my work in the community, and had always heard St. Michael’s is the place to go...that it’s top-notch. We walked
in and it was such a nice surprise. It’s beautiful inside and we saw someone within 10 minutes. We’re used to waiting forever! The doctor listened to my concerns, did the examination and prescribed medication. Emma didn’t have sun poisoning, just a severe sunburn. The doctor also—without prompting from me—had a conversation with my daughter regarding the use of sunscreen and never letting this happen again. I was very impressed. We were there no more than an hour...and the entire visit went very smoothly.” Michele took her daughter to St. Michael’s again when she had a bad cold and chest congestion after hours. “This time we knew what to expect! It was the same experience...so clean when you walk in the doors. Just makes a great impression. And just like the first time, we were out with meds in about an hour. Smooth as butter. St. Michael’s ER is just a night and day difference from any other ER experience I’ve ever had.”
At this time St Michael’s, due to governmental, bureaucratic decisions, is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

Meet Joy and Her Legacy
A
by Amy Sharp s one of seven kids, Joy Dowell learned responsibility and independence early on. She’s sold phone systems, owned a farm, and taught dance in the Catskills. For nine years, Joy was known as the promotion queen for JCPenney. “My specialty is coming up with creative angles to get business. I promoted fragrances for celebrities like Liz Taylor and Ivana Trump. I choreographed fashion shows and created glamour events in stores. My mom called me a ‘party waiting to happen!’” Here in Sugar Land, Joy was the owner of the women’s boutique, Annabelle’s. She served on the Board of Directors for the Fort Bend Women’s Center for seven years, including chairing it in 2009. Then she sold Annabelle’s and retired. “I was done with retail,” says Joy. But when the Women’s Center planned their new Pennywise stores, they called Joy for help. For four years running, Joy’s served as Chief Retail Operations Officer for the Fort Bend Women’s Center. Under Joy’s guidance, the nonprofit has nearly doubled its business. “What I’ve set out to do with the Pennywise stores is to create destination shopping for this community. It’s affordable, it’s quality merchandise, and it’s fun. We have junior fashion shows and repurposing classes. We have a rewards program and senior discounts... plus 50% off clothing on Wednesday and 25% off housewares on Friday. And special promos for email subscribers. We run it like a regular store.” The Fort Bend Women’s Center is here because it saves lives, and they are dependent on your donations. “We buy nothing, and we salvage and make money from 95% of what is donated. Whatever is not good enough to sell in the store is recycled...this includes textiles, metal and books. Old or stained clothing will be recycled as rags. Never think something is in too bad of shape to donate.” A Sugar Land resident for 25 years, Joy and her husband Dennis share five children and nine grandkids. She loves to dance, entertain, sew and cook. The retail arm of the Women’s Center is Joy’s legacy. Barely able to hold back tears of happiness, Joy says, “I’m so fortunate that I’ve been able to use my creativity and skills to create something so positive in this community...the community that I love.”

ack in 2007, House of Blooms kiosk opened in Sugar Land Town Square. “The intention was a shop that sold single stems...you could buy a flower for your sweetie in the plaza!” says Pat Houck, sole proprietor since 2008. But she had no idea how the budding business would blossom. “My daughter Tiffany has always been a big part of the business,” continues Pat. “And when her friends started getting married, several asked if we could help with flowers. Of course we were happy to do it...and things grew from there!” Today, with a larger storefront also in Town Square, House of Blooms isn’t just delivering flowers, they are your personal florist. “We get to know you,” says Tiffany. “What you like for birthdays, what you like in different areas in your home. We carry a large variety of flowers from international growers. We can do flower installations on-site...including on nearly any structure. We have corsages and boutineers. Our first prom girls are now coming to us for weddings!” Fabulously decorated events are Tiffany’s specialty. “She truly has a gift,” says Pat. “She handles full service decorating for special events...including flowers, table linens, centerpieces, etc. She’s done oil derrick centerpieces, avatar themes... wherever your imagination goes, she’s right there with you. She’s decorated weddings all over the country. She’s the best and I’m so proud of her.” With three designers and eight artists from around the world, House of Blooms has a large braintrust of ideas and styles. “Our staff is phenomenal,” says Tiffany. “We live in a diverse community, and we take pride in knowing what is appropriate and traditional for the many occasions celebrated by our different cultures.” Nothing makes Tiffany and Pat happier than making people smile. They do it through their floral creations, their exclusive decorations, their dynamic personalities, and their “See What You Send” program. “When you order an arrangement, we email a photo of it to you before delivery. That way you get to see it, and have the opportunity to make changes if it’s not exactly what you had in mind.” Drop in anytime...House of Blooms would love to become your personal florist too! his May, celebrate moms, graduates, Cinco de Mayo and all the days in between with award-winning, traditional Tex-Mex from Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant. This gem—owned and operated by the Jaime and Lupe Garcia family—has been in their very same Hwy. 6 location for nearly 13 years. Locals love it, and the line out the door on weekends is proof positive of why this little eatery has earned a spot on the Houston Chronicle’s Top 100 Restaurants list two years in a row, and has been awarded Best Tex-Mex for 2015 by the Houston Press. It’s good stuff! We’re talking superior homemade food. Lupe uses recipes handed down for generations and grinds her own spices for amazing authenticity and flavor. The seafood is fresh and the meats are choice. Fan favorites include fabulously marinated fajitas, stuffed avocados, green chicken enchiladas, chile rellenos, Mercy’s nachos with fajita beef or chicken, chicken flautas and mouthwatering desserts like sopapillas and flan. “Be sure to check our Facebook page or www.lupitassugarland.com for Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo specials,” says Jaime. “We have some fantastic things planned!” Bring your friends and family to unwind after work, catch up over lunch, or relax on a lazy weekend. And why not add a margarita to your celebration? Stop into Lupita’s on Monday or Wednesday when margaritas are just $2 all day. Or relax with Happy Hour prices on both beer and margaritas seven days a week from 3-7. And since it is a month of celebrating...bring that fabulous flavor to your next soiree. Whether it’s graduation or the company picnic, your guests won’t be able to get enough of these fresh fajitas—delivered for your convenience and kept hot in chafing dishes. “Give us a call to discuss all of your catering options. A Holistic Approach to
Feeling Better
by Amy Sharp
P
rimary care physician Dr. Julia Ward first became interested in bio-identical hormones when she wanted them for herself. “I was very fatigued and run down,” says Dr. Ward. “And bio-identical hormones aren’t something generally taught in med school. I wanted to know what they were and how they work, so I attended a conference and signed up for a fellowship with The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.” “I underwent functional medical tests including a hormone saliva test and a micronutrient test,” continues Dr. Ward. “What we found was in part my fatigue was due to an MTHFR genetic mutation...where I process B vitamins less efficiently. By treating this condition and utilizing hormone replacement, I feel 100% better. Everything in the body is connected, and that is why here at Balanced Body Image we take a holistic approach. If we can uncover the underlying cause, you can get clinically good results. I take a natural approach to everything, and use herbal and natural remedies where I can.” When you seek bio-identical hormones with Dr. Ward, she may run blood, urine and/or saliva tests based on the way you prefer to have hormones delivered. “We always deliver the hormones estrogen and testosterone as either a pellet inserted under the skin or as a transdermal
cream. I usually test your thyroid as well, and may do a neurotransmitter test and a four point cortisol test if I suspect stress is a factor. Micronutrient and gut health testing and others are also possibilities based on your individual case. And once I understand what’s going on, I can get to helping you feel better.” Dr. Ward graduated from the University of Southern California School of Medicine and has been a primary care physician for more than twenty years. Prior to moving here, she traveled the world with her husband, Dr. John Ward—a urology oncologist at MD Anderson. Both she and her husband did their training in the Navy. John and Julia and their five children live in Sienna Plantation. They are both fitness enthusiasts who compete in bodybuilding and figure competitions. In addition to bio-identical hormones, Balanced Body Image offers a full range of anti-aging services including the SkinPen (microneedling,) Botox and fillers, and other aspects of skin care. True Recovery from Plastic Surgery

by Amy Sharp
riven by her love for anatomy, Delmie DePuma trained to be a massage therapist once her stay at home mom job was winding down. “Doing massage was great,” says Delmie, “but I really wanted to make a difference. So I studied lymphatic massage.” The lymphatic system delivers lymph fluid throughout the body, and helps form an integral part of the body’s immune system. Delmie says, “When the lymph system works well, the body feels healthy, and there’s a strong defense system against infection and illness. But when the lymph system is blocked due to surgery or injury, increased swelling and bruising is likely, and the body becomes more susceptible to infection. Lymphatic massage helps get the lymph fluid flowing again, and your body heals faster than it would have without massage.” Delmie spent four years performing lymphatic massage on recovering patients in a plastic surgeon’s office. “I wanted first hand knowledge of what was going on in my patients’ bodies, so the amazing doctors at the Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery allowed me to see every surgery. I observed tummy tucks, face lifts, liposuction procedures...everything.” But when the office asked Delmie to train in aesthetics, she asked to go part time. That wasn’t her passion. “They ultimately turned me down...but I left on good terms. Everyone was incredibly supportive of me.” And in an amazing leap of faith, Delmie—who was now divorced—left her only source of income to open her own business. “I cried all the way home. But knew I could either follow my dreams...or work for someone following theirs.” Six years later, True Recovery Lymphatic Massage is thriving. Delmie is one of the few massage therapists in the country that specializes in plastic surgery recovery. “Doctors from as far away as Miami and the Dominican Republic send me their patients. I’m helping people get better, and I love what I do!” Delmie has lived in Fort Bend County for 25 years. She’s raised three beautiful daughters here. She’s a member of the American Massage Therapy Association and she dreams of someday starting a foundation called True Recovery for Single Moms...because she’s been there. Feeling Right At Home W by Amy Sharp
hen Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene Top Producer Debbie Marcell heard Renee McKelvey was joining her office, she couldn’t believe it. “Her previous company redid my floors...twice. And if I had known she was going into real estate, I would have gone after her with a vengeance.” Renee owned All About Carpet and Floors for 25 years with her husband Bob. But when Bob tragically lost his life, Renee decided to close the business. “I’m not a quitter in any shape or form,” says Renee. “But Bobby and I had worked together our whole life. It made me sad to keep going without him. Part of my healing was moving on in a completely different industry.” “As part of All About Carpet, we did floors and countertops..and remodeled kitchens and bathrooms,” continues Renee. “Customers frequently asked our advice when trying to up their resale value. I’ve had 25 years experience helping people prepare to sell. Plus, it takes great project management skills to organize a remodel...and these skills translate well to the coordination of a real estate transaction. There is so much involved behind the scenes, from contract through execution. The more I looked at real estate, the more it just seemed like a natural step.” “I am very impressed with Renee,” says Debbie. “Her knowledge and past experience bring a lot to this business. She can look at a kitchen or bath remodel and tell you how much was spent on it. That really helps with pricing and marketing. She’s held a lot of open houses for me and I’m honored to be one of her mentors. She treats clients the same way I do and I’m excited to enter into a longterm business relationship with her. She’s got what it takes to be successful.” “I think it was divine intervention that I landed at Better Homes and Gardens,” says Renee. “I interviewed with all the majors, but when I interviewed at Better Homes and Gardens...I knew this was it. Bobby and I built our business from the ground up...and I was prepared to do that again. But as hard as it is, here I don’t have to do it alone. Debbie and everyone in this office is amazing and always willing to stop and answer any questions I might have. I know I could...but I wouldn’t want to do it anyplace else!”
