Keeping Cool at Cinco Ranch...Then and Now
D
by Marie Page
id you know Cinco Ranch dates back to before Texas became a republic? In the 1820s, pioneer Moses Austin was granted by the Spanish government the authority to settle 300 families in the valleys of the Brazos and Colorado rivers. After his death, his son Stephen F. Austin was able to complete his father’s wishes, even under the newly established Mexican government. Through a series of marriages and land sales, the area that is now Cinco Ranch landed in the hands of five wealthy oilmen. They called it Cinco Ranch in a nod to its Spanish roots (cinco means “five” in Spanish). The five ran cattle on the ranch and were also involved in rice and peanut production. In February 1984, the largest raw land transaction in the history of Houston took place when Cinco Ranch Venture purchased Cinco Ranch, creating the 5,000-acre master-planned community we know today. Gerald Svetlik, owner of local True Fix A/C & Heating, says, “There’s no doubt that back in the day there was no shade and few trees in Cinco Ranch. The residents and ranchers needed a big-brimmed hat to make it through the Texas summer. But today we have plenty of options to keep the residents of Cinco Ranch comfortable!” Of course, Gerald is talking about air conditioning! True Fix was established in 1972, twelve years before Cinco Ranch became what it is today. True Fix is the oldest independent Trane Comfort Specialist in Katy. And just like Cinco Ranch has evolved from ranch life to amenityfilled living, Trane has revolutionized air conditioning. “The engineers at TRANE are the brilliant minds behind TruComfort technology,” says Gerald. “The Trane XV20i gives you precise comfort by running at the exact capacity needed to keep your home comfortable. This allows the compressor, outdoor fan, and indoor fan to vary operating speed...saving you a ton of money when temperatures are at their highest. And to make your life even easier, you can control your A/C from your smartphone. Heading home early? Knock the temperature down a few degrees before you get there. It’s that easy!” True Fix hasn’t quite been around since before Texas was a republic, but don’t worry...they’re not going anywhere. “We have been in this community for a long time,” says Gerald. “Kim, my wife of 38 years, has been a Katy Realtor for many years. Several of our employees are long-time Katy residents and have been with us for quite some time. We will never lose sight of the fact that every person we help is our neighbor.” You might not live on a working ranch, but maybe you still love your big-brimmed hat. This is Texas after all! But don’t make it your True Fix A/C & Heating only defense against the hot Texas summer. Let True Fix hook you 281-392-9334 up with the best A/C around. The consult room has floor-to-ceiling glass walls looking out on the open bay—designed by Dr. Forrest so new patients can see exactly what goes on in the office and will know what to expect during treatment. When it’s time for braces to go on, Dr. Forrest invites you to five minutes at the candy bar...because once the braces go on, candy is a no-no. But never fear...you get to revisit the candy bar again once the braces come off! So what do parents do while the kids are having fun and getting braces adjusted? Enjoy cookies and maybe take a nap! ricia Turner Properties—the real estate office committed to exceptional customer service, always being helpful, and continuously giving back—is thrilled to welcome Blaine Cruse and John Pham to the team. Blaine has always loved real estate. “I was obsessed with shows like Flipping Houses on HGTV. Years ago, I was buying a new build house and a friend in real estate agreed to help me for half of the commission. She literally only showed up to sign her name to the builder’s contract. I was left floundering on my own to muddle through the process (We are no longer friends!). That motivated me to pull the trigger and get my license. We need good guys out there. People that will help, not just leave home buyers lost and on their own to figure it out.” Ten years and a successful real estate career later, Blaine continues to put everything into helping people. “I bring a lot of energy to the table. I’m the king of open houses: I coat the area in signs and put at least two 11 foot flags in the yard. My open houses are a spectacle...and it works. People visit!” Blaine loves what he does and totally supports Tricia Turner’s vision for the office. “Bottom line...we both care. Prior to joining her office, I had my own programs for law enforcement, fire, military and teachers. Her ‘Protect and Serve’ and ‘Teacher Rewards’ programs are in line with what I believe in.” John grew up in Katy. After graduating from Sam Houston State with a degree in business, John knew he wanted to flip houses. “Three weeks after graduation, I had my license. I started selling houses at 21 years old, and I did pretty good for a young guy.” John recently read an article about Tricia Turner Properties. “I knew immediately that’s where I wanted to be. The attitude and culture at Tricia Turner Properties is in line with my beliefs. I go above and beyond to make sure my clients are taken care. I’m honest, and I love giving back to this community.” In addition 6 ~ UPCLOSE Katy ~ June-July 2017

ruce Granger did two winter campaigns in oil and gas exploration on the north slope of Alaska. “I learned first hand how fragile our environment is,” says Bruce. With oil flailing in the early ’80s, Bruce moved to Colorado and started working in computer electronics. Then in 1992 his wife Lynn took a position with Antarctic Support Associates. “Hers was a non-deploying position, but two months later she was in Antarctica. I found they had an opening down there on a research ship. For four years I supported the computers for the NSF. Just like in Alaska, I realized the fragileness of our environment.” After four years the couple decided to find “real jobs.” “We needed something different.
The first year is an adventure, the second is about the money, but by the third you realize you have no life. Lynn sent our resumes to AOL. We moved to Virginia and worked for AOL for 10 years.” It was in Virginia that the couple discovered NaturaLawn of America. “We had them treat our lawn and realized how good the product was.” When AOL merged with Time Warner the couple wanted another change. “I was done with the computer industry...it wasn’t what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted to be a farmer or a rancher like my grandfather, a sheep rancher in northeast New Mexico. Lynn found a job in Houston and I realized there were no NaturaLawn of America franchises in Texas. I could farm grass!” And the rest is history. For 11 years, Bruce has been happily and organically growing lawns. Bruce says, “NaturaLawn of America pioneered the environmentally responsible lawn care business. Our approach is safer and more effective than traditional chemical services. And we’re your neighbors. We live here. We knock on the door and say ‘Hello’ before we start your lawn service. ay Salti, father of three boys, knows that no matter what you do...your kids are going to crave pizza. That’s one reason he founded the first Pepperoni’s back in 1990 as an old-style relaxed pizza parlor with a friendly and family-oriented atmosphere. Ray says, “I was concerned about the ingredients in the food my kids were eating...so I decided to go all-natural. Every Pepperoni’s pizza uses natural mozzarella cheese and premium tomatoes for the sauce. I believe food should taste good...and be good for you too!” Today, this pizza represents a quarter century of perfection! Now using 100% nonGMO untreated wheat flour, sugar, oil, and sea salt to make the dough fresh daily and all naturally sourced ingredients, whether you’re in the mood for Veggie or All the Meats, there’s a variety of high quality toppings to choose from—including traditional favorites like pepperoni and mushrooms to more eclectic choices like meatballs, fresh spinach, or artichoke hearts. And Ray understands that while most kids love
pizza, some do have diet restrictions. “Pepperoni’s happily accommodates our gluten-free guests by offering a glutenfree crust, as well as vegan cheese upon request. Everyone should get to enjoy great pizza!” Pepperoni’s also offers subs, salads, pastas, calzones, wings and desserts. The first location was such a great success that today there are 12 Pepperoni’s locations. The Medical Center is the most recent, and there’s one coming up right here in Aliana. Ray also owns new family restaurant Express Italia Kitchen in Fulshear and critically acclaimed Bollo Woodfired pizza in Upper Kirby. Ray says, “Whether you gather with friends and family for a casual meal or order out for pizza...you deserve fresh, high-quality ingredients. It’s delicious food you’ll feel good about eating. art and Suzanne Oshman have known Deborah Baustista, owner of Tista’s Fine Furniture & Mattresses, for many, many years. “I used to sell cars with her,” says Hart, General Manager at West Houston Infiniti. “But home design is her forte if you ask me!” The Oshmans should know, Deborah designed their living room, dining room and Hart’s trophy room. Suzanne says, “Deborah is so sweet. She can take a conversational piece and design a room around it. And her range is wide. She does traditional, eclectic, modern... anything! She just has a way of pulling things together. In our living room, Hart really wanted a western theme—leather, cowhide and animal rugs. But I wasn’t so sure. Deborah designed a French country look with a western motif and it looks fantastic. She’s just awesome!” “Even if you have no idea what you want, Deborah can help,” continues Suzanne. “She goes through pictures—getting an idea of what you like—and works from there. And she takes a ton of time with you, treats you like family. When my daughter moved into an apartment, we sent Deborah the floor plan and she designed a sectional to fit without ever setting foot in the place! If you’re remodeling, she can help redesign your house, room by room. I had the privilege of seeing Deborah’s new home. It’s just beautiful. She designed around heirloom furniture that was precious to her. The result is phenomenal!” “Not only is she amazing, she’s also kind and fair. She works with people that have a budget of $5000 and people
that have a budget of $750,000. It doesn’t matter...the result is absolutely fantastic. And if your furniture doesn’t hold up or it malfunctions, she’s always on your side. You are her top priority.” “My job is to take your dream and make it a reality!” says Deborah. “Design is my passion, but pleasing you is my guarantee. I love that Hart and Suzanne are so pleased!” Deborah does free in-home consultations, which include interior painting ideas, window treatments, art, mirrors, furniture and rugs. “Best quality at the best price is how we guarantee happy clients. At Tista’s Fine Furniture, we have over 160 vendors, so we are sure to find exactly what works in your home and your budget!” In Hart’s trophy room, Deborah arranged his hunting trophy heads and selected a desk, chair and rug to complete the room. “It’s great!” says Hart. “I just trust Deborah and believe her when she makes selections for our home. And her prices are reasonable to boot. I recommend her in a heartbeat!”

ack in 2009, volunteer EMT and new father Chase Purser started shredding documents professionally. “I was working for my dad, veterinarian Dr. Mark Purser, and decided I needed a long term plan to be self-sufficient. At the EMS department, we were looking for a paper shredding service. We found a small company and then it dawned on me...it was something I could do.” With a large shredder in the back of his father’s vet hospital, Katy Document Destruction was open for business. While Chase was getting his document shredding business up and running, his friend since the 6th grade, James Lewis, was back in Houston working as a mechanical engineer in oil and gas. Realizing they were both of the entrepreneurial mindset, the two along with a friend from college, Matt Allen, started a company and acquired a piece of commercial real estate in 2016. A year later they set out to grow Katy Document Destruction and rebranded as SE-Shred. SE-Shred now performs all shredding on-site in their state-of-the art truck. They take care of business at a rate of 4500 lb/hour. How does it work? “We can do a one time purge,” says James. “Or we can bring you a bin(s) and get you on a schedule. We can service weekly, bi-weekly or monthly...whatever you need. We securely handle and dispose of confidential information. We also recycle 100% of shredded documents. There are no hidden fees and we are committed to outstanding customer service.” SE-Shred is working on obtaining NAID certification, the rigorous global standard of care in information destruction. Both Chase and James live here in Katy and are raising their families here. You can catch them out and about at community shred days throughout the year. SE-Shred is small and locally-owned and operated. Because of this, they can provide each and every customer with exceptional customer service. Lone Star Floors showed us options, and we fell in love with the salesman Mark, who was very humble and professional. By the end of our first visit, my daughter said, ‘You need to use these guys!’” “I started looking at the hardwood flooring, and was getting ready to spend the money on this one particular kind when Mark said, ‘Come over here and take a look...what do you think about this wood flooring?’ And I’m like, it looks about the same. He says, ‘Well, it’s about half the cost. It’s called wood laminate.’ I couldn’t believe it!” “We had wood laminate installed downstairs, in one bedroom upstairs Sam and on the staircase. They moved the furniture, pulled everything up, installed the flooring, then cleaned up afterward.” Doug’s wife Angie was there during the installation, and was incredibly satisfied with everything from start to finish. “She says the installer was so professional and made sure she was comfortable about everything. We have two dogs who were in the kennel during the installation, yet he made sure
our dogs were even comfortable. When the project was done, Angie gave him a hug and thanked him for being so nice.” Doug is sold on wood laminate. “Looks just like natural planks of wood. We had the floors done in April, and I thought maybe the dogs would scratch it up by now. It’s so durable. Those dogs run through the house all the time. Not one scratch.” Lone Star Floors is family-owned and operated by cousins Mohamed Naser, Ziad Mukhaimer, and Imad Mansour. After three years in Jackson, he accepted his current position at Belhaven’s West Houston campus. Repeatedly named one of “America’s 100 Best College Buys,” Belhaven delivers accelerated adult education, and both bachelor’s and master’s degrees that are tailored to the needs of busy working adults. “I love Belhaven,” says Pete. “We have a vast demographic of students that come together and learn together. Each brings in different strengths based on their background and life experiences. It’s a really cool thing to bring them all under one roof and not just learn what the professors are teaching, but learn from each other. Here, every student has a name... they’re not just a number. The classes and campus are a safe place where students come to be ministered to in both education and life. When a student’s mom dies, with pray with him. Students facing worries and stress have an outlet where they can release that. And we focus on academic excellence. A student earns the degree they need, and they learn something in the process. Our worldview curriculum teaches everything through the lens of Biblical world truth. From business to psychology, we challenge our students to understand why they’re doing this and why they believe what they believe.” Belhaven students can attend part-time or full-time, and classes meet just once a week. This spring, Belhaven graduated 52 students. “That’s 52 out of a campus of 230,” says Pete. “This is a place where we love people openly and where they are. Sometimes that means being bold-face honest with them, and sometimes it means a hug. I see all of the work these students put in, and it’s absolutely beautiful to see their faces as they are finishing. Graduation day is my favorite day of the year. It’s great stuff. I see lives changed because of Belhaven every day.” No matter where you are in life, you too can become a successful Belhaven graduate. Give Pete a call today!

eterinarian Dr. Mark Purser can’t remember a time he didn’t want to be a vet. “I grew up in a small town in Mississippi. I had lots of dogs, cats, snakes and turtles. When I was in high school we moved to Houston, and I went all the way through vet school at Texas A&M.” In practice since 1988, Dr. Purser opened Highland Knolls Veterinary Hospital in Katy in 1999 with one goal: To make your veterinary experience as pleasant and comfortable as possible for you and your pet. That means staying up-to-date. Dr. Purser does 50+ hours of continuous education each year...more than triple what’s required of a veterinarian. “A lot has changed over the past 18 years,” says Dr. Purser. “We have the most current pharmaceuticals available. In our in-house labs, we can run most tests right here in the hospital. We have ultrasound capability and our digital radiographs can be emailed to whomever might need them.” Not only has veterinary science changed, Katy has changed as well. As Dr. Purser’s clients of two decades started moving west, Dr. Purser’s son Chase, the Hospital Systems Administrator, saw a need for branch hospitals nearby. “We realized it’s not easy to go very far to take your pet to the vet. So in 2014 we opened Spring Green Pet Clinic to better serve our clients and patients. Then in 2016, we opened Value Pet Care near Fulshear. Value Pet Care is a wellness practice where we aim to get animals in and out quickly, saving you time and money. Get your annual check up, vaccines, heartworm care and other minor care close to home!” A 4th location, Grand Morton Animal Clinic, is opening later this year. Boarding and grooming are also available at the original Highland Knolls location. Dr Purser and his wife Angela are longtime Katy residents. Chase and their daughter both graduated from Taylor High School. Dr. Purser enjoys golf at Willow Fork Country Club and spending time with his grandkids, his four dogs and his cat Bundy. “Bundy is our ‘serial killer.’ He takes care of the mice, rats, etc. that wander near our home!” Katy Area Veterinary Medical Group 281-398-1551 Highland Knolls Veterinary Hospital 20920 Highland Knolls Dr Katy, Texas 77450 Spring Green Pet Clinic 10705 Spring Green Blvd #400 Katy, Texas 77494 Value Pet Care 6734 Westheimer Lakes N. The Wizard of Teeth
by Olivia Cane nce upon a time there was a young prince who wandered the forest looking for Pokémon characters...but he forgot to brush his teeth. As the young prince went along discovering rare and mythical creatures in the forest, he found delicious snacks left for him by kindly woodsmen and various singing, dancing animals. There were soft drinks, cupcakes covered in pink frosting and buckets of candy. The prince gobbled them up without any regard for what all that sugar did to his teeth. One day the prince’s mother, Queen Brush-a-lot, realized to her horror that her young prince wasn’t brushing as often as he said he was—and consequently, had a few cavities. No matter what she told him or how many Pokémon characters she offered, he was too busy having fun and being a little boy to bother with annoying things like brushing. So Queen Brush-a-lot brought him to a great wizard named Dr. Faisal M. Khan at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental. Dr. Khan was a great wizard indeed, and he knew that flossing just once a day would automatically give the prince extra booster power to find Pokémons. “Brushing just two minutes a day, twice a day, plus limiting sugary junk food and soda will pretty much make you invincible,” Dr. Khan, the wizard, told him.

And the prince listened—partially because the cool wizard wasn’t his mom, but also because the wizard’s lair had surfboards, toys, games, and an awesome under-the-sea theme which made visiting there fun. Plus his staff of other wizards was super-duper friendly and there was just something about hearing a powerful wizard like Dr. Khan tell you stuff that seemed to do the trick. To the delight of the entire kingdom, the prince started brushing. Shazam! More Pokémons, fewer cavities. Queen Brush-a-lot was overjoyed. And everyone had gleaming teeth and lived happily ever after. Do you have a young prince or princess living in your castle? Give Dr. Khan’s lair a call and let him perform feats of magic on your family’s teeth too!
