We need to start talking about mental illness so we can then talk about mental health

“Progress,

NOT Perfection” ~Teresa Reading

“PEOPLE ARE NOT THE SUM OF THEIR ILLNESSES... THEY ARE MOTHERS, SONS, HUSBANDS, SISTERS, AND BELOVED FRIENDS. IF WE LOOK BEYOND THE LABELS WE SEE WHO A PERSON TRULY IS AND WHAT THEY CAN BE WITH UNDERSTANDING AND THE PROPER HELP!”

verything we do affects others,” says Teresa Reading, RN. “It affects our immediate family, our community family, our global family. We need to start talking about mental illness so we can then talk about mental health. And mental health affects everyone.” Teresa works together with her husband, neuropsychiatrist Dr. William H. Reading, two of their four sons, Andre Alzamora and Brian Reading, and the fabulous Sanam Ghaleche and Kitzel Robles to provide general psychiatry, recovery of addictive diseases (including the cutting-edge Vivitrol programs), and NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), the only FDA-approved nondrug, non-invasive treatment for major depression, to our community.

“Everyone wants to be understood,” says Teresa. “At our office, we believe we are all in this together...our staff, the patient, the patient’s family and other agencies. A community of support is so important. Our staff brings expertise, experience, empathy and compassion to the table. The patient’s family brings history and insight, and when the family is involved, they can be better prepared for changes in treatment. The mental health of an individual affects the family unit as a whole...so it makes sense most of the time for the entire family to be involved in treatment.” Teresa and Dr. Reading have been helping the residents of Fort Bend County with mental health for around twenty years. Teresa says, “Fort Bend County is very culturally diverse. Our office family is also diverse and proud to be knowledgeable in a variety of

cultures within the practice. We want everyone that walks through our doors to feel welcome, respected and understood. Our office isn’t clinical...it’s homey, relaxing and inviting and we always ensure privacy.” Teresa’s passion for educating our community family on mental health is evident. She currently serves as Chairman of the Board for Mental Health America of Fort Bend County... an organization that provides resources and continuing education units to mental health professionals, businesses and community members. “In our practice, we also continually strive to refine and improve our educational offerings,” says Teresa. “I’m so excited about the expansion of our office to add a new conference room for patient and family educational services on topics such as medications, diagnosis and available resources. Education is power...the more we know, the better we can work together and help our community.” If you or someone you know could use mental health help, call the family at Dr. William H. Reading’s office today. New patients are generally seen within 24-48 hours due to their extended business hours. Teresa says, “People are not the sum of their illnesses...they are mothers, sons, husbands, sisters, and beloved friends. If we look beyond the labels we see who a person truly is and what they can be with understanding and the proper help!”

huge life change starts with a single word, “Yes.” Through the Literacy Council of Fort Bend, students say “yes” to learning to read, write, and speak the English language, take GED preparation, basic Computer Skills, and US Citizenship classes from dedicated tutors... some of whom are homeland security trained. Through the Transitions Program, students earning their GED can take the next step in their education. Don Kerstetter of Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land, member of the Literacy Council’s Board of Directors, says, “All of the volunteers and tutors who have said ‘yes’ to helping others have made a real difference in the lives of families, professionals, and hardworking individuals throughout our community. Now we invite you to say ‘yes’ to our invitation to ‘Reading between the Wines.’” Ready to toast to literacy? The third annual “Reading between the Wines,” is presented by Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land and Safari Texas and co-chaired by Dana Sitton and Bonnie Stewart. You’ll rub shoulders with best-selling authors and revel in a celebratory atmosphere with fabulous wine provided by Allison Wen and Safari Texas Ranch, amazing eats from a variety of local food vendors, and exciting auctions. This year you’ll enjoy New York Times best-selling author Linda Castillo, the award-winning author of over thirty books, including the recent thriller “Sworn to Silence,” filmed as “An Amish Murder,” starring Neve Campbell.

Your tax-deductible admission to this “can’t-miss event” includes an opportunity to hear Linda speak, as well as the chance to purchase an autographed copy of Linda’s books, and the opportunity to purchase autographed books and meet additional featured authors including Dr. Rebecca Deurlein, Benjamin Lewis, Shubhra Ramineni, Lynda Rutledge and Janice Scheve. Visit our website or Facebook page for more information and mark your calendar for “Reading between the Wines” at 7:00pm on Friday, February 6, 2015 at Safari Texas Ranch. For reservations, sponsorship information or to learn more about Reading between the Wines, please visit www.ftbendliteracy.org or contact Cari at 281-240-8181 or cmiddaugh@ftbendliteracy.org. Kelli Metzenthin, the Literacy Council’s Executive Director, says, “We depend on donations and fundraising events to continue our mission of ‘Changing Lives Through Literacy.’ Our students work hard to better themselves. We have celebrations when people get a GED or when they get their citizenship or when they move up a level in their proficiency, but the biggest celebration every day is when they walk in the door. Volunteers and donations make it all possible!” Literacy Council of Fort Bend County An Accredited Affiliate of ProLiteracy America 281-240-8181 12530 Emily Court, Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.ftbendliteracy.org

hy does Reuben Stafford, Owner of Ameristar Roofing say, “We stake our reputation on your recommendation?” Because he knows that Ameristar’s work—and their customers— speak for themselves! One customer, Tami, writes, “My roofing job has just been completed, and I really think that when someone does an exceptional job, it should be acknowledged. Your Sales Consultant was “there” from beginning to end. He did everything he said he would do and was here when he said he would be. He is very customer-service oriented and never made me feel as I was “bothering” him after the contract was signed. He represented your company like he truly cares about what happens...what an asset! Once the contract was expedited, the crew moved in and quickly moved out, mindful they were working on someone’s home, not just replacing a roof. Thanks for making my experience so easy! Kudos to all!” Getting your roof repaired or replaced is only the first part of the hassle...dealing the insurance claim is the next. Reuben says, “Several members of our staff were insurance adjusters in former lives, so we’ve seen both sides of the fence. Ameristar has helped with literally thousands of homeowner’s insurance claims. We’ll make the calls, get approval and a quote, warranty our work…and we stand behind our workmanship!” Another customer, Mike, writes, “I am writing to express my gratitude in the way I was treated during the roof replacement your company recently performed at my house. I am in the insurance business and since Hurricane Ike we have been exposed to many different types of roofing companies, both bad and good. I worked closely with many of my clients who were dealing with various roofers as a result of their claim. When it was determined that my roof was damaged during the storm, I was very careful to select a company to call. I talked to my neighbor, who used Ameristar, and was pleased with the results. I called and they came to my house that afternoon to inspect. I felt they were honest with me from the time they arrived until the job was complete. This is not true of a lot of the companies that are out there today. They were timely in getting the process complete and did not promise anything which was not delivered. In the end I felt that I was treated just as I had hoped to be!” Everyone—the management, sales team, and installers—at Ameristar shares a commitment to exceeding their customers’ expectations. That’s why they’ve all passed the CertainTeed Quality Master Exam and the Master Shingle Applicator Exam. Ameristar’s earned the elite certification of “Shingle Master Company,” (something only one percent of roofers nationwide can say), so they can offer CertainTeed’s 3 Star, 4 Star, and 5 Star Extended Warranties—the gold standard in shingle protection. Ameristar customers get the best products with the highest available warranty…and stellar service. Ask anyone! Ameristar Roofing 1006 F.M. 359, Richmond Texas 281-410-5995 www.ameristarroofing.com

“Defeat Monster Mouth!”

by Amy Sharp

T

hat’s the slogan the American Dental Association has chosen for the 2015 National Children’s Dental Health Month. Dr. Faisal Khan at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental says, “Each February, the ADA sponsors a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. We love it and are ready to help your little super heroes defeat ‘Plaqster the Monster!’” Good dental habits are important to keep those amazing smiles strong and bright and squash the plaque Monster. “Your super hero can defeat the Monster by following this simple rule,” says Dr. Khan, “‘2min2x.’ That’s the secret code for ‘brush your teeth for two minutes, two times a day.’ Brush when you get up in the morning after breakfast and before going to bed at night. You get extra special powers when you also floss once a day. Have braces? Be super-duper careful caring for your teeth and you will have a beautiful smile when the braces come off!’” Leaping tall buildings in a single bound and defeating supervillains and mega-monsters takes ton of energy...but that doesn’t mean Monster Mouth will win. “Most children need snacks between meals to maintain energy levels,” says Dr. Khan, “But sugary snacks should be few and far between. Sugar gives the Monster more strength to make plaque! Stick

to fruits and other healthy foods, and encourage water instead of soda or sugary juices.” Finally, every super hero needs reinforcements! Dr. Khan says, “Regular visits to the dentist keeps the Monster in check! Like the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, I recommend parents their bring their kids in for their first checkup around one year of age. There’s rarely anything wrong, but it’s a great time to familiarize children with our environment...alleviating a lot of what I call ‘crazy screaming dentistry!’ When kids enjoy coming in, it’s ultimately easier for everyone. And we can defeat that pesky Monster together!” Super heroes, remember the secret code “2min2x!” Brush your teeth two minutes, two times a day for a super smile and a healthy mouth! You can defeat Monster Mouth and save the day for shining smiles everywhere! Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental Dr. Faisal M. Khan, DDS 832-222-TOTS (8687) 7830 W. ore than 6000 births were recorded in Fort Bend County in 2014. Fort Bend has been among Forbes “Fastest Growing Counties in the US” for several years now. Needless to say... we have a lot of families! And with families come schedules and activities, times of great joy and times of great worry. But do you sometimes feel excessively fatigued, weak, depressed or irritable? Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy in Sugar Land says, “Worrying about your kids and family is completely normal. I know...I have four children of my own! But if you are experiencing an excessive loss of energy and mental clarity, and increased anxiety, you may have a hormone imbalance. Aging results in a drop in progesterone and estrogen in women, and a drop in testosterone in men. But with today’s advances in hormone therapy, there’s no need for you and your family to suffer!” If you are experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance, call Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. “If BHRT is right for you,” says Dr. Campbell, “we work with your doctor to create a customized formulation just for you. Then we’ll follow up to make sure you are getting the relief you need with the lowest possible dosage!”

Even if your hormones are in perfect balance, running all over town can make anyone frazzled. Make your life easier with Campbell’s Compounding. Dr. Campbell says, “As your one-stop-shop family pharmacy, we stock all commercially available medications, and we’re here to help you with specialized compounds like hormone therapy. We accept all major insurance and prescription plans, and recently added Life-File ePrescribing to our services. Have your doctor send over your prescription electronically. No waiting! And you can access your records securely from home. Check the status of your prescription, order refills and check side effects in the same system your doctor and pharmacy use!” With so many options, there’s no reason to be a “number” in a big chain pharmacy any longer. True customer service is not a thing of the past! Dr. Campbell says, “We’ve added a lot of services since the early days...I’m really excited about the way Life-File can make my patients’ life easier! But we are still your local family-friendly pharmacy. Waiting for the

Perfect Home

“M

y husband Kevin and I wanted to downsize,” says Annette Devers, “ and we were looking for a very specific home--a large one story in a gated community with a water view. Many years ago Realtor Paula Rucky and I were on the PTA together (Paula’s an honorary lifetime member of the Texas PTA) and we’ve stayed in touch. For two years I sent her home listings and asked for her opinion...but she didn’t want me to settle for anything that didn’t fit into our specifications. When a lot came up with a floor plan that I thought was perfect. I sent it to her. She spoke with the builder immediately and recommended I move quickly. Thanks to Paula’s guidance, we got the only lot in the neighborhood where our dream house would fit!” Of course, building a new house may mean selling your existing home. Annette says, “Paula came in with her legal pad and gave us a list of things to get the house ready to sell. She assured us it would increase the value. I’ll be honest, I was skeptical. But I trusted Paula and worked through every item. Finally Paula said, ‘After all the upgrades, I think your home is actually worth more than we thought!’

We listed it at the increased price...and it sold in 10 days. Paula was spot on about everything!” “There’s no denying it,” says Annette, “selling one home and building another is stressful and emotional. But Paula’s knowledge of the market makes the situation successful. She was my voice of reason and a constant support. Whenever I was unhappy, she was on top of the situation. We were very specific about what we wanted and where we wanted it...and Paula made every detail happen so our dream home became a reality!” Paula has been a Top Producer over 15 years and was 2013’s “#1 Listing Agent” in the RE/MAX Grand office. For five years in a row (2011 – 2015), Five Star Professional Research has awarded her the Five Star Real Estate Agent Award. She says, “I pledge to put one hundred percent of my knowledge, resources, and enthusiasm to work for you!” Paula Rucky, REALTOR® ABR, CDPE, CHMS, CRS, CNE ~ RE/MAX Grand Rucky Properties ~ 281-793-5779 paula@ruckyproperties.com www.ruckyproperties.com
