Changing Lives

hat began as simple weakness in his legs had progressed so rapidly that Aaron Sammut, 64, could no longer walk. By the time the Missouri City resident made an appointment with board-certified neurologist Larry Tran, M.D. – one of the specialists at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Neuroscience & Spine Center – he was confined to a wheelchair and was completely dependent on his wife and daughter. “During my initial examination, it was very apparent that Mr. Sammut had overactive reflexes, which are often caused by damage to the spinal cord,” says Dr. Tran, who quickly scheduled an MRI for Sammut at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. That test showed a dangerous compression of Sammut’s spinal

cord in the chest area, caused by a bone spur. “This was a serious situation that needed immediate attention,” says Dr. Tran. “When you have this level of compression, the risk of permanent paralysis is always present.” That afternoon, Dr. Tran called a colleague at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Neurosciences & Spine Center – board-certified neurosurgeon Vincent Wang, M.D. – and asked him to take the case. Dr. Wang admitted Sammut to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital immediately, where Sammut could start taking medication to reduce the swelling around his spinal cord. The next day, Dr. Wang performed surgery to remove the bone spur. Two days later, Sammut was up and walking with minimal rehabilitation. Today, he has recovered nicely and

is walking without assistance, and the risk of further damage from his spinal compression is resolved. “We went from MRI to surgery in less than 24 hours,” says Dr. Wang. “Dr. Tran didn’t need to search for a surgeon or put the patient through a lengthy referral process. He just picked up the phone and called me. Together, we quickly got the patient back on his feet – literally.” A team approach to patient care Working together, the 16 physicians at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Neuroscience & Spine Center provide the most sophisticated neurological care using a collaborative, expedited approach. “Houston Methodist Sugar Land is the only hospital in this area to have a full neuroscience program, and we are backed by the latest technology and outstanding facilities and staff, including specially trained neuroradiologists,” says neurosurgeon Rajesh Bindal, M.D., medical director of the Neuroscience & Spine Center. “We are performing complex, sometimes life-saving procedures right here in Fort Bend, every day – procedures once available only at the medical center. And because we work together as a team, we can quickly and easily bring in a colleague with a necessary subspecialty and collaborate on patient treatment. The end result is that our patients receive the best possible care in a comfortable, convenient location that makes it easier to recover.” Complex procedures close to home Dr. Bindal – along with neurosurgeon John Park, M.D., and ENT Clement Chow, M.D. – recently performed an extremely complex procedure on Benita English who was suffering from a rare congenital condition that caused part of her spine to protrude into her skull and compress her brain

stem. The problem was getting worse as Benita aged, causing a variety of problems including difficulty walking. “This very complex trans-oral surgery required us to go through her mouth and back of her throat to access the juncture where her spine met the base of her skull,” says Dr. Bindal. “Very few surgical teams in the Houston area can perform this type of neurosurgery.” The seven-hour procedure was a success, and Benita is now walking comfortably and improving daily. “This is an example of the complex cases we can handle here at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital,” says Dr. Bindal. “It required two surgeons, an ears, nose and throat specialist, and specialized anesthesia and operating room technology, including a computer-guided surgical system.” Care for you and your family Physicians at the Neuroscience & Spine Center specialize in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic spine surgery and interventional pain management while offering a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Some of the center’s areas of focus include:

Back On Their Feet!

Benita English says, “I really trust Dr. Bindal and all the doctors and nurses at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Neuroscience & Spine Center and I’m so thankful for them. Dr. Bindal checked on me every single day and reassured me that everything would be okay. Plus, having this complex surgery right here in Sugar Land was a true blessing!”

Healthy, Happy Legs at Every Age by Sarah Warburton

Dr. Baltazar’s Prescription for Healthy Legs: ✧Get plenty of exercise to tone your legs and improve circulation. ✧Try to maintain a healthy weight. Losing even a few pounds can reduce pressure on your veins. ✧Kick off your high heels or ballet flats. The healthiest heel is between ½ and 1½ inches tall. ✧Avoid standing or sitting for long periods without taking a break. ✧Flex your ankles 10 times every 10-20 minutes while standing or sitting. ✧Elevate your legs above your heart for 10 minutes once or twice a day. ✧Wear support hose or compression stockings, as needed.

S

tudies estimate that 40 million Americans—both men and women—have varicose veins. What causes an ordinary vein to become a swollen, painful varicose vein? We asked local Vascular Surgeon, Ulises Baltazar, for the answer. He says, “While elements of your lifestyle—sitting or standing for long periods, weight gain or pregnancy, trauma to the leg, and normal aging may all increase your risk of developing varicose veins, the most common cause is heredity. If you have one family member with a history of varicose veins, your risk of developing them can be 25 to 30 percent...and if two family members had them, your risk rises!” One local woman, Gina Torres says, “Many years ago I brought my mother to Dr. Baltazar for her varicose veins... and he really helped her. When I noticed varicose veins also becoming a problem for me, I went straight to Dr. Baltazar myself. After my initial treatment, I got busy with life and several years went by. In addition to genetics, I also love high heels...and that takes a toll. Over time my varicose veins became more and more painful and embarrassing, especially over the ankle of my left foot. The vein there was dark purple like a spreading bruise.” Your veins have one-way valves inside that keep the blood flowing in one direction. If those one-way valves

don’t work, blood could flow backwards and pool, causing enlarged, raised, purple veins in the superficial system. “These varicose veins are more than a cosmetic issue, they’re also a health risk and a red flag,” says Dr. Baltazar. “Varicose veins indicate an increased chance for blood clots in the superficial system (thrombophlebitis) and clots in the deep system or deep venous thrombosis “DVT”, which are potentially lethal. I specialize in treating varicose veins to improve not only the appearance of your legs, but also your overall health!” Gina took her varicose veins seriously and sought expert, professional care. She says, “I see such an improvement when I visit Dr. Baltazar! Now I come to his office every three weeks for him to treat my veins. Everyone in his office is so nice and friendly and I’m very pleased with the results of his work. My legs look and feel better...and I know that Dr. Baltazar is looking out for my health. You can tell he really loves the work he does!”

Next Stop...St. Michael’s! Tales from the ER:

Did you know? Your

insurance may require a different level of co-pay for a visit to a doctor’s office, an urgent care, or an emergency room. However, according to Texas law, if you THINK your symptoms will cause harm without treatment...that IS an emergency. And your insurance MUST pay in-network benefits at the ER of YOUR CHOICE whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “out-of-network.” St. Michael’s is one of the few licensed, free-standing ER facilities with Joint Commission Accreditation, ACR certified radiology suites, and CLIA certified labs. They are in-network with AETNA and also accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. Dr. Orsak says, “Twentyfour hours a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year, St. Michael’s Emergency Room is ready to help you!”

hen Susan Martinez, a local attorney at Hrbacek Martinez & Nestor, first met Dr. Shannon Orsak founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms through the Fort Bend Leadership Program, she never imagined how important he would be to her family. She says, “One night my dad started to sweat profusely. He told me, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine. I’ll just take a couple aspirin,’ but the sweating didn’t stop. I said, ‘Dad, I think you’re having

up saying that you’re having a heart attack, but you aren’t with us.’ That worked!” “On the drive over, I found Shannon’s number. He called back saying he’d prepped the staff...and when we arrived around 9pm they were ready, waiting and took complete control of the situation. St. Michael’s really protected my daughter. She was worried about her Grandpa, but they’ve got a waiting area that’s as comfortable as a living room.

a heart attack...you need to go to the ER.’ He was a typical man...it took me almost an hour to convince him! My four-year-old daughter and I were actually sitting in the car with the engine running and I said, “We’re going to St. Michael’s Emergency Room and it will be weird if we pull

She sat with her Kindle and the television and they put her at ease. While they were running tests on my father, I was able to go back and forth and check on her. They were wonderful about constant communication and I always knew we were in good hands. Throughout

the process, Shannon called to check in with me and follow up. You can feel how much he and his team care about you...it’s incredibly comforting!” “The tests confirmed Dad was having a heart attack, so St. Michael’s immediately found him a Coronary Care Unit bed at a local hospital. From the moment we arrived to the time they transferred him by ambulance only took an hour and half. The transition was absolutely seamless and so easy. Dad was already in his hospital room by the time we walked through the doors...and it was funny, we had to walk right through the hospital’s emergency room. Seeing the crowds of people and the chaos there made me so thankful we had gone to St. Michael’s!” “Since then, Dad’s had a triple bypass and he’s doing well. He tells everyone, ‘You have to go to St. Michael’s!’ I really appreciated the speed with which we were treated, the calm environment, their excellent communication, and how caring they were. I’m sure St. Michael’s saved my father’s life!” At this time St Michael’s due to governmental bureaucratic decisions is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

Local Businesses Supporting Excellence

hen John Onofrey got out of the Marines back in 1981, he moved to Sugar Land, where he met his wife, Trudy. Today they have two kids, a married daughter Courtney and a son Sam currently at Texas Tech. As co-owner of BUGCO Pest Control (www.bugco.org) and owner of a home inspection business (www.texasinspectors.net), John says, “I decided to do business with Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land because of my father-in-law RC Brown. He told me ‘Those are the guys you need to see.’ Since then I’ve bought five fleet vehicles for my business from Classic Chevy Sugar Land and I couldn’t be more pleased. Every single transaction has been easy and pleasant. They also service our vehicles and they’ve got a great team!” “When my partner Chris Millward and I were thinking about building the BUGCO fleet, I approached Mark Kolon, General Sales Manager at Classic Chevy Sugar Land and then I talked with Don Kerstetter, the owner. Since we planned to buy all our vehicles from Classic Chevy Sugar Land, they offered us the opportunity to demonstrate the quality of our pest control service. Since then, we’ve done all the pest control for Classic Chevy Sugar Land and some personal work for Don at his residence. I think it boils down to a shared philosophy: Don and I both believe in treating people fairly, providing excellent service, and doing business with people who support our local community.” “Whether you’re dealing with cars or pest control or home inspections..everything depends on customer confidence. At BUGCO, our team arrives well-groomed, wearing uniforms, and in company vehicles with our logo on them. Those vehicles are crucial to our business, and we trust them to Classic Chevy Sugar Land. As a home inspector, I tell folks that a ‘good builder’ is one who steps up

and corrects any problems, because nothing is ever perfect. Classic Chevy Sugar Land has never failed to address any issue promptly and to our complete satisfaction. When we grow the BUGCO fleet, we’ll depend on Classic Chevy Sugar Land every step of the way.” “Years ago I took my brother to the dealership that used to stand on the corner of 90A and 59 and we were practically assaulted by salespeople. It was almost frightening. I didn’t go back until Don moved in with Classic Chevy Sugar Land. I’ve always had excellent service from the moment I walked onto the lot through every service trip. In fact, after we bought our first company vehicle from Classic Chevy Sugar Land, my wife Trudy bought a Tahoe from them, I bought my son Sam a Silverado truck, and I purchased a pickup truck for myself...and we’re all completely happy. I trust Classic Chevy Sugar Land professionally and personally!”

I

f you don’t know the answer, Brian Jackson of Jackson Heat and Air will give it to you straight: “You can’t survive without good air-conditioning, and you’re paying a lot more money than necessary, if you don’t update your system or maintain it properly.” The strain we put on air conditioners in the Houston area is nothing less than brutal—ask anybody who’s made it through one or two of our hot-n-humid summers. “If your air conditioning unit runs at full blast and can’t keep up in the summer, then you’ve got a problem,” says Brian. “It’s a sign that you’re paying the energy company too much money for a system primed for premature failure.” So that’s the bad news. But there’s good news, too! Trane TruComfort ® Technology has spent years of research developing a system called the XV20i that will give you the exact amount of air condition-

ing you need...when you need it! Trane systems not only run at peak efficiency, they remove all that “dog breath” humidity from the air. Plus, your inner gadget-geek will thrill to the possibilities of being able to control your thermostat with your computer or smartphone, whether you’re across the country or across the world. Are you ready for even more good news? Jackson Heat and Air is offering some amazing start-of-the-season discounts right now on full inspection of your existing system. And if you’re thinking about getting a Trane TrueComfort unit, you have plenty of discount options there as well--trade-in rebates, Centerpoint rebates, even 0% financing. It pays to get started before you have a problem with your air conditioner. Even one night in Houston without climate control will make you want to pack your bags and move to the nearest motel!

Rest assured that with Jackson Heat and Air, you are in the very best of hands. Not only have they received the Better Business Bureau Award of Excellence for the last five years, they are the proud recipients of Angie’s List Super Service Award. Eighty percent of their new business comes from word-of-mouth and customer referral. Brian Jackson has worked tirelessly over the past thirty years to bring his EPA and Nate-certified know-how to the Houston area. And now his sons are the next generation coming up, just as eager to continue a long family tradition of impeccable customer service! Call today and see for yourself how great Houston summers can be...with a little help from Jackson Air and Heat! Jackson Air and Heat, Inc. You can’t reach your destination unless you plan your route.

On the Road to Perfection You can’t reach your destination unless you plan your route. Danny Posey, the General Manager for Audi Central Houston says, “Our EVP Jeff Dyke told me that he believed that our store here in Houston would be the number one Audi Dealership in the Nation...then in the world. He said, ‘We spent 28 million creating a beautiful facility to take care of our customers, but unless it has heart, it’s just brick and mortar.’ That’s a lesson all of us at Audi Central Houston have taken as our mission: We have a beautiful facility and we sell unsurpassed vehicles, but it’s the people —our customers and associates —that make us truly exceptional!” As the largest Audi Dealership in the country, you can find the number one Audi Salesperson in the country, Yuri Poshumensky at Audi Central Houston... but they consider what happens after the sale just as critically important. General Sales Manager Gerald Cardenas says, “More people are coming to Audi than ever before and we want to show the

Central Houston

world why. Our vehicles offer the perfect balance of performance, ride quality and superb engineering.” Knowing your personal history and the road that’s been traveled makes all the difference whether the team at Audi Central Houston is considering a car or its potential driver. Robert Wood, Pre-owned Manager, says “When we are walking around a preowned car, we ask ourselves what it needs to find a new owner. Who is the person who will buy it? What is important to them? What will they use it for? It’s not about the sale, it’s always about the customer.” Danny agrees. “We look past cars —new or pre-owned —to the people who will drive them. We have pre-owned vehicles priced from $5000 to new Audi’s at over a quarter million...and every buyer is equally valuable to us. We cater to a wide range of clientele. In fact, Audi also has a Foreign Business Professional Program that’s very popular here in our international city! It allows clients just arriving to the area on work visas, to be able to drive an Audi (and who wouldn’t want to do that)!” Audi is known around the world, but Audi Central Houston is your hometown Audi dealer. Danny says, “Gerald and I live and raise our families here in Sugar Land. Both of our wives are local realtors and our oldest daughters graduated from Clements and Foster high schools. We absolutely love Sugar Land and its cultural diversity... it truly represents our modern world and that’s why we call it home. Audi Central Houston supports a range of community causes from local Fort Bend schools, athletic programs, and many nonprofits. In fact, last year our store invested $350,000 in the greater community and we frequently host charity events at our dealership.” Before you step into Audi Central Houston, know that the entire team has been walking the floor, preparing every detail for your arrival. Danny says, “We’re excited to welcome you into our home. We want your experience to be comfortable, easy, and welcoming...so that our home becomes yours as well!”

Why Walk If You Can Dance?

K

risten Pryor grew up doing tap, jazz, and ballet, was on the dance team in college, and danced with a semiprofessional team and a professional dance troupe. That’s in addition to running, walking, and working full-time! She says, “One day my hip and knee started hurting when I ran and my hip made an ominous clicking sound. I did some research online and found that my problems started with my feet...my gait was misaligned. I didn’t want to give up

by Sarah Warburton my active life, but I couldn’t keep living with the pain. Then I read about HyProCure... and it seemed like the perfect solution!” “The HyProCure is a stent placed in the foot like an ‘implantable orthotic,’ to help improve foot biomechanics...even for athletes! The website directed me to a local Board Certified Foot Surgeon trained in the procedure, Dr. Marco Vargas of Foot & Ankle Associates. At my exam, we talked about my goals and concerns. Dr. Vargas asked that I begin physical therapy to strengthen my feet for the best results. Then in December I had the surgery on my left foot. Everyone was so supportive and answered all my questions. Dr. Vargas was just as careful explaining what I needed to do to optimize recovery as he had been in preparing me for surgery. I wanted the maximum benefits, so I knew better than to ‘freestyle’...I followed Dr. Vargas’ directions to the letter!” “Since then I’ve done yoga and in March I did my first power walk...with no pain or clicking at all. The actual shape of my foot has changed! I can really feel the difference in alignment...my left leg glides and hopefully this will prevent ‘wear and tear’ injuries that happen over time as little problems become bigger. Surgery on my right foot is scheduled before the end of March. I know Dr. Vargas

will continue to give me excellent care and the best advice. A year after the surgery I should be back at full strength... and the gift of dancing and staying active for my entire lifetime is definitely worth the wait!

nastics down the stairs can be hazardous to your dental health! If a softball has damaged or broken a baby (or primary) tooth, Dr. Sanchez will take a look. She says, “If it is just a little loose, it may heal without treatment, but we still need to do an examination to check for damage to the gum and jaw. I may use my ‘magic gauze’ to whisk a very, very wiggly tooth out. If the tooth has been knocked clear out of your child’s mouth, don’t put it back into the gum. These first teeth prepare the way for permanent teeth, so we do need an exam and possible treatment.” “When the injury has occurred to a permanent tooth,” says Dr. Sanchez, “I’ll check for damage to the nerves or blood vessels. We may treat a chipped or cracked tooth by smoothing its rough edges, repairing it with resin, leaving it in place or removing it. A loose permanent tooth may need stitches or splints until it heals. The Spirit of

Old...with Mexico a Twist!

W

hen the Soto Brothers opened the first Soto’s Kitchen in Sienna Plantation, folks loved the amazing flavors and warm, personal atmosphere so much, it became clear they’d need a second location. Amador Soto says, “As we gathered our team of talented, creative people, we needed a bigger stage to express our vision...and we found it in Missouri City, home of our second location. Everyone at Soto’s Kitchen pays attention to the details, building the layers of flavor, spending time on every component, and adding the finishing garnishes.” With an artist’s palette of vivid purples, greens, fuschia and black, Soto’s Kitchen draws on the heritage and flavors of Old Mexico with a personal twist. Amador says, “Our family comes from Central Mexico, a region that lies between the lush rainforests and the arid deserts. My brothers and I grew up in the kitchen, learning the food my mother and my mother’s mother cooked. At Soto’s Kitchen, we share a cuisine you could call ‘Mexican Fusion,’ drawing from ancient culinary traditions from different regions in Mexico and adding our own modern flair!”

LUNCH SPECIAL available from Monday through Friday from 11:30-3:30

Soto’s Kitchen 2899 Dulles Avenue, Missouri City, TX 77459

Your eyes will be delighted and your tastebuds will be dazzled by Soto’s special Chicken Cubano...chicken served over seared sweet plantains and drizzled with their own bright chimichurri sauce and topped with beautifully tangy house-made pickled red wine onions. A “fan favorite” is the Mole Steak...a tender 10 oz marinated steak over a poblano mole sauce topped with grilled onions and cotija cheese and served on a broken piece of marble to represent the ancient origins of this dish. Amador says, “We make our mole with techniques and flavors passed down from my mother and grandmother. Our guests love the rich, smoky depth it brings to the steak and the way the onions and cheese add notes of light.” Enjoy a glass of house-made sangria or a margarita with the welcoming atmosphere and tasty treats at Soto’s Kitchen. You won’t be surprised by two secret ingredients shared by every tempting menu dish from the refreshing Grapefruit Salad to the family-friendly Kids’ Menu to the ample catering menu…“At Soto’s Kitchen, quality and freshness are our secret ingredients!”

It’s National Plumbers Day!

Hooray for

Your Hometown Plumbers! by Amy Sharp

I

magine what your day would be like without easy access to safe and clean water. Most of us take mundane things like showering, brushing our teeth, using the toilet, doing the dishes and washing our laundry for granted. It’s no accident that most of the time the water in our home works so well we don’t have to think about it...it’s a testament to America’s hardworking, highly skilled plumbers, like our local experts at Alan’s Plumbing. But when the plumbing doesn’t work as it should, we feel stuck. We scramble to friends, neighbors, Facebook and Yelp trying to find the best plumber out there. Lucky for us, the best of the best have been serving the residents of Fort Bend County for more than 15 years! Alan’s Plumbing is a family-owned and operated business with a reputation for customer care. Owner and master plumber Alan

Burkhalter, his brother Chris, and Alan’s sons Luke and Beau believe in honesty, integrity, dependability, and quality workmanship. These values are the cornerstone on which they built their business and the secret of their success! When you’re stuck and you call Alan’s Plumbing, Alan’s wife Jennifer answers the phone. She’ll take the time to listen to your problem, talk you through the next step, and get you a time frame you can count on. And when these guys show up, the job is done right! All of Alan’s licensed plumbers are fast, friendly, and meticulous experts in their trade. Their customer service is second to none…they understand that your time is valuable, and they are dedicated to making sure that your plumbing needs are taken care of as efficiently as possible and to your complete satisfaction. And as

part of their hallmark courtesy and cleanliness, when they leave…any mess leaves with them! When you really think about it, modern plumbing and sanitation have made a significant impact on the quality of our lives...so much so that Congress declared April 25th National Plumber’s Day, a day to highlight the important services these professionals provide and show them some love for all that they do. So let’s shout a big “Hooray for Plumbers!” And remember, Alan’s Plumbing is always here when you need them. You don’t need to shout... just pick up the phone and call 281261-1064. Alan’s Plumbing

hether you’re moving into a new home or creating a 2015 update of your current one, the window fashion experts at Grand Windows & Interiors can translate your personal style and transform your space by coordinating gorgeous colors through drapery, shades, upholstery and paint. Custom drapery, shades, shutters, blinds, and motorization is this family business’ premier expertise. Designer Caron Lopez says “With the right products like those by Hunter Douglas, we not only make windows more beautiful, private and energy efficient, we enhance architectural style, preserve views, and advise you on the smartest impact for your dollar. Like icing on a cake, drapery sweetens a home with expression!” Brenda and John Gillespie didn’t want to wait until they moved into their new home to get the perfect window dressings. Brenda says, “When I came across an ad for Grand Windows and Interiors in UpClose Magazine, I called Caron. She came out while the house was still under construction and measured all the windows. Working off the only thing I had, a throw pillow I kept out of storage, she found beautiful fabrics and accent colors for the drapery and cornice and valances- dark brown accented with gold

and an accent in silvery grey. Everything was a perfect match...I don’t know how she did it!” “Grand Windows also did all our shutters and blinds, wooden ones throughout the home, and honeycomb shades in the courtyard for privacy and light control. The ‘greige’ wood blinds in the breakfast area really blend perfectly with the accent in the wall paint. Her husband, Cande and his assistant handled all the installation and did a great job. Our front bedroom has an unusual arch over the window. Grand Windows special-ordered a custom shutter for that odd-shaped window. When Cande installed it, it was a perfect fit!” “I was so impressed that Caron created such a lovely, seamless look, without access to my furniture or carpets or anything-just going by my descriptions and pillow colors. She made the entire process so easy. I didn’t want to move into the house and live with bare windows...thanks to Grand Windows, my house looks just like a model home!” “Whether you are moving into a new home or want to transform your current one,” says Caron, “we want to make your everyday living, extraordinary. Spring Cleaning for Our Children

S

by Betsy de Vega.

pring brings more than warmer weather...this “testing season” brings extra stress and looming deadlines for our children. As parents to two kids of our own, my husband and I understand how hard it is to see your kids struggle with anxiety. I’ve found that a little ‘spring cleaning’ can make this spring brighter for everyone. Breathe. Mom and Dad, your emotions affect how your children react. In the hoopla of getting into the best college, being the best in sports, and being top of the class, we need to remember all this pressure can really affect our children’s psyche. As long as they try their best, that’s all we can ask for. Relax! Patience. If we have a child who is struggling, being bullied, has learning or other disabilities, this hinders their learning. Pushing too hard can make things worse... but exercising our patience gives kids a

chance to work things out in their own time. Communication. Children may not communicate well, so it’s up to us to let them know we are here and always ready to listen. Kids may not respond right away, but they crave our love and concern...and they are listening. Embrace this season with your child and help clean away some of their anxiety. Hold them tight and let them know they are not alone. You know they “got this” and you will be by their side as they prepare for every transition in life. ›››Betsy de Vega is a Learning Specialist and founder of the KnILE Center with over twenty-five years in education. HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS RELIEVING YOUR PAIN AT ITS SOURCE

Relieving Your

Pain from Auto

Accident Injuries

J

ohn Painter travels the world hunting and fishing...so when a car accident left him stooped over and in pain, he felt like a entirely different person. He says, “I met Steve, aka Dr. Harris, through Rotary almost fifteen years ago (we have both been District Governors). After I got to know him, I came to him at the Sugar Land Health Center for an occasional adjustment. In fact, he fixed my shoulder from an old baseball pitching injury. Then in 2010 I was in a serious auto accident. I had a broken neck, seven crushed vertebrae, and hurt my elbow and my knee. For a year I was under the care of a neurologist and wore a brace to stabilize my neck for six months...further reducing my mobility. I could hardly turn my head, had severe pain between my shoulders and could only go a couple of hours a day before I had to sit down...and stay down! My entire life I’ve had almost military posture. Shoulders back, chin up. I have always been a very active person...and I wanted to get back to my life. We began therapy understanding that was the goal.” “I told my doctor I wanted to go the chiropractic route for my physical therapy and I had three different chiropractors with in-office therapists under consideration. He said whomever I chose would need to write a letter explaining in detail their treatment plan for me...then he gave the okay to Dr. Harris. I proceeded with treatment because I was impressed with Dr. Harris’s chiropractic ability, his therapist, and his equipment including an oscillator, a hot laser machine, and a Triton DTS disc decompression machine. For six to eight months I drove forty minutes each way from the far side of Houston three to four times a week (right past a hundred other chiropractic offices) until I completed therapy. Now I just come to his office for an occasional tune-up.” “What was the end result? I went hunting in Alaska for moose, carried my pack and rifle, and kept up with all the walking. Later I went hunting in Africa and Argentina and fishing on the Amazon in Brazil...without any problems at all. I’m not in any pain and can go all day without stopping...I’m even back to riding my motorcycle! Years ago I had a little motorcycle incident and knocked my knuckle out of place. It stayed that way for years and had started throbbing at night...but Dr. Harris fixed that too! I’m 73 years old

Saving Marriages One Couple At a Time Luke Worth

P

sychologist Dr. Petty was used to solving problems. He did it all day long, helping people overcome fears and work through marital woes. But he’d been suffering a marital woe of his own, despite his best attempts to overcome it: he snored! Before you dismiss this as a “real” problem, keep in mind that Mrs. Petty was being driven out of her mind every night. Sleeplessness makes any of us irritable, impatient, and deeply pessimistic. Nose strips didn’t work. Neither did sleeping pills or earplugs. Something had to be done, and fast. The Pettys had a stroke of luck. Right next door to them was a renowned dentist, Dr. Lomonte. And in the way of neighbors who vacation on Tiki Island and face down hurricanes together, the Pettys and the Lomontes had become friends. Dr. Petty confided his problem, and Dr. Lomonte immediately knew the answer because he had helped countless others who had the same issue.

“You need a Snore Guard,” he said. “It’s a FDA-approved intraoral device proven to be up to 99% effective in the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. It works by preventing your jaw and tongue from dropping back into the throat, which is the number one cause of snoring.” Dr. Petty then confessed that he was also a terrible tooth grinder. “I’ve tried night guards before. Nothing worked. I chomped and snorted and wheezed all night long. Sometimes I wake up with a sore throat from all the snoring.” “Just come in,” Dr. Lomonte assured him. “We can fix that.” So even though Dr. Petty worked in the Rice Village area, he trekked across town to Dr. Lomonte’s office in Stafford. After all, his wife’s health and happiness (and his own) were on the line. Dr. Lomonte fitted him with a custom Snore Guard and sent him home again, knowing full well how happy Dr. Petty would be. “From the first night I wore it, the snoring stopped,” Dr. Petty reported. “My wife says it’s a miracle. Of course, I agree. I can’t tell how great it feels for both of us to have our lives back. Thank you, Dr. Lomonte!”

ne man is marching to the beat of his own drum and making noise at Fort Bend Music Center’s Sugar Land and Houston locations. President of Fort Bend Music Center, Rick Cochran says, “We’re delighted to introduce Craig Latson, our Music Education Director. An ordained deacon with an MA in Theology as well as a music instructor with a BA in Business and MBA, Craig was a bandleader in middle school, and a drum major in high school and college, playing in the marching band and the orchestra. At the Houston location I personally have fifty students...forty of them are adults and the oldest is 89. I tell all our students, old and young: You only need one thing in order to play music...desire. If you have the desire, we’ll teach you to play. When music brings you joy, you’ll want to do it for the rest of your life!” The fun doesn’t end when summer camps are over. At Sugar Land, you can sign up for group beginner lessons in the fall with Renee Massey, Lessons Desk Manager or Lindsey Cochran. ack in 1979, Marine John Onofrey saved a man from drowning, for which he was awarded the Navy & Marine Corps medal for Heroism. Honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps in 1981, he had earned the Marine Corps Expeditionary medal, Good Conduct medal and Sea Service deployment ribbon as well. Today he and his wife Trudy have raised their two kids Courtney (now married to son-in-law Luke), and Sam in Sugar Land...and John has built not one, but two trusted businesses, Top 2 Bottom Inspections (www. texasinspectors.net) and BUGCO Pest Control (www.bugco.org). At Top 2 Bottom Inspections, all the inspectors are veterans of our armed forces, representing the Marines, the Navy, and the Coast Guard. John is a Certified Master Inspector licensed for residential and commercial real estate, termite and pest control, pools and spas and thermal imaging. John says, “I started the inspections business in 2003 and we have been growing since day one, inspecting properties all over Fort Bend and Harris County working with many fantastic real estate professionals. After we started doing termite inspections, our customers requested that we do their pest control, too. In 2007 I started BUGCO...and we pride ourselves on delivering honest, responsible and effective service, and the kind of personal touch you only get from a local, home-grown company.” “When I started BUGCO Pest Control, I brought my long time friend Chris Millward on board as a partner. He had years of experience in pest control with a national company and lives right here with his wife, Emily and their brand-new daughter Corinne. Chris has been incredible about bringing new business, restaurants and apartment complexes into the BUGCO family.”

“As local guys, we know what kind of pests to expect...and how to deal with them. We offer inspections and treatment for termites and other pests, rodent control and exclusion, and mosquito misting. In fact, right now we’re offering our customers an incredible special on a mosquito misting system...you can get a 20 nozzle system installed for your outdoor living space at our cost ($1499).” “If even reading the word ‘bugs’ makes you itch, give us a call. We have seen an uptick in calls about bed bugs, especially from apartment complexes. In every case, we’ll inspect and verify you actually have a pest problem before we take any action...and we’ll always recommend the appropriate treatment. We understand you want your home and office to be pest-free and you want to protect your family and your customers. We feel exactly the same way!” Home inspectors often have to give folks unwelcome news. Even so, John says, “After a home inspection, when our customers asked for more services, that was the highest compliment we could imagine. We pledge to honor the trust you place in us... because our integrity means everything to us!” Top 2 Bottom Inspections ~ Houston Home Inspections 281-565-4677 11910 Sendera Lane, Richmond, TX 77407 www.texasinspectors.net BUGCO Pest Control 281-240-2157 9720 Harlem Road #013 Richmond, TX 77407 www.bugco.org

Service That Makes a Splash!

W

hen Tom and Denisa Ballard were ready to put a pool, deck and spa in the backyard of their home, they wanted to make sure they picked the right company to do the job. “We ended up getting four bids,” says Tom, “and one was from Bratton Pools, referred by my neighbor. Mike Bratton’s bid won out for a variety of reasons. The bid was competitive while including top quality products, and Mike did an extremely good job of explaining the pool and all of the amenities available. And I just trusted him immediately.” With the bid in hand, Bratton Pools began construction at Tom and Denisa’s home. “The only part of the process that wasn’t smooth was the weather,” says Tom. “We got a lot of rain during the construction. That’s the kind of glitch no one could control, but Mike handled it perfectly. If he said a crew was going to be here, they were here. I always knew what was going on. The project took longer because of the weather...but in the end we had exactly what was promised! We even added a few upgrades along the way, and Mike was very fair in pricing those out for us.” “Our backyard is beautiful and the construction is top notch,” says Tom. “I could give a recommendation based on that alone. But what makes Mike stand out for me is his responsiveness and follow up after construction is completed. I called Mike several times

because ‘something wasn’t working.’ Each time the ‘problem’ ended up being user error. In one instance I called on a Saturday and Mike actually came out to my house to take a look at what I was talking about! How many companies have that kind of follow-through after a project is completed and the customer has already paid? Bratton Pools delivered responsive service above and beyond anything I expected!” Kryshon Bratton co-owns Bratton Pools with her husband Mike. Kryshon says, “We take great pride in providing the kind of customer service Tom describes. When you build a pool with us, we are hands-on and supervise the process directly every step of the way.” A family-owned and operated business, Bratton Pools maintains an A+ rating with the BBB. And it’s no surprise that Mike and Kryshon are in the pool business. Kryshon is an alumni of the Katy Taylor swim team, and Mike swam for neighboring Fort Bend Clements. You could say they’ve spent their lives either swimming in or building pools! Check out Bratton Pools on Facebook to learn more and see possibilities! Where Can

YOU Turn for Help? by Sarah Warburton

arol White says, “My maiden name was Bellamy and my nephew is named Brian, so when I saw the UpClose story about Bryan Bellamy of All Out A/C, I wanted to meet him...but I didn’t actually make that call until I was in real trouble.” “One night a man from our gas and electric company knocked on the door. He said he’d had a call about a power outage, but I told him our lights had only flickered. Without checking our meter, he just left. Only a few hours later, we realized our heater wasn’t working...so I called them back. After one thing and another I finally called an HVAC company. That technician said one leg of the power--230--wasn’t working. He told me to call him back after the power company fixed the line. Well, once the power was fixed, the furnace still didn’t come back on, so I called that A/C company. I have COPD and was recovering from bronchitis and I take care of my bedridden husband. We were making do with a space heater in the master bathroom...but the technician wasn’t in a big rush. He offered to order a part and maybe see about coming out on Monday. I was so frustrated by all the calls and all the effort it took to get help that I went on the computer and searched for Bryan Bellamy’s company, All Out A/C.” “Bryan had given his team the weekend off after the holidays, but he was apologetic and very eager to help. The technician from All Out A/C arrived at 8am sharp Monday morning. He was on time, polite, and very conscientious.

After he went up to check out the furnace, he told me that the circuit breaker on the furnace had been turned off by the other company. No wonder it wasn’t working! All Out A/C took the time to thoroughly inspect the furnace, explained everything they did, and made sure everything was working properly and running before they left.” “It’s funny that I’ve lived in Fort Bend County since 1957, and I hadn’t run into Bryan before this…but I’ll sure be calling him again. It’s a relief to know that there is an HVAC company here that really cares about people. All Out A/C treats you like family!” “We want you to be comfortable in all kinds of weather,” say Bryan Bellamy aka “Mr. A/C” and Chance Kamp of All Out A/C and Heating.“Don’t wait until it’s hot to replace your A/C. Right now we have off-season discounts and options that include 100% financing with approved credit. Don’t wait to get ready for the heat!”
