early five years ago Mack McDonald, Lincoln Ward, and Chef J.L. Quevedo brought a little piece of the fabulous New Orleans cuisine to Sugar Land’s Town Square. Today their masterpiece The Rouxpour, managed by Patrick Bigby, is bigger and better than ever! “In our first three years,” says Lincoln, “we expanded 1000 sq ft to add the private dining room and added the 500 sq ft patio area. We’ve done a complete bar renovation, including installation of a state-of-theart glycol system to ensure that we get a perfect ice cold beer with every pour. And in our most exciting news, we are set to open our 2nd location this November in the fabulous new Baybrook Lifestyle Center...and it’s looking very likely that our 3rd location near Memorial City Mall will open in early 2017!” The popularity of The Rouxpour is not surprising. Here visitors are transported to “Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras.” In the intimate and inviting dining room, guests enjoy the authentically delicious flavors created by Chef Quevedo. The ambitious menu--a delightful combination of the flavor and culture of New Orleans’ renowned French Quarter with Texas-sized style--that has captivated its Sugar Land audience remains everexciting. Lincoln says, “Chef Quevedo takes great pride in using fresh ingredients. New for this season are our Summer Salads and Bayou Bakers. The

eed a little firming and tightening as swimsuit season comes into full swing, but can’t take the time? Now you can literally freeze stubborn fat away without surgery or downtime! “CoolSculpting offers an effective, non-invasive alternative to liposuction,” says Marty Knesek, R.N, Lead Injectionist at Sugar Land Face & Body. “We’re talking no skin damage, no needles, no lasers, no suction hoses and absolutely no knives. We safely deliver precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. After we select the area(s) to be treated, the device is positioned on your body and controlled cooling is applied. During your procedure, feel free to read, check email, or even take a nap. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then die. And get used to the results, because in the weeks and months that follow, your body will naturally process and eliminate the treated fat cells. And once the fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good!” Is CoolSculpting a viable option for weight loss? Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery Founder and Owner, Board-certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Eric Humble says, “It’s a common misconception that weight loss and fat reduction are the same thing. They’re not! When we lose weight, our fat cells become smaller..but the number of fat cells remains the same. When we gain weight, those fat cells become larger again. What’s cool about CoolSculpting is that it actually reduces the number of fat cells in the treated areas. And fat cells that are no longer there can’t ever get any bigger!” When it comes to body tightening and sculpting, you have a lot of options. At Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery with its in-house AAAASF certified surgical center, Dr. Humble has created a single destination with a full range of solutions from injectables to facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation, and body contouring all under one roof. Also under the same roof is Dr. Humble’s cutting-edge medical spa. Dr. Humble and his staff share a philosophy of caring for their patients. “I believe it’s the level of medical expertise and the depth of caring demonstrated by the doctors and all our staff that really makes Sugar Land Face & Body unique,” says Marty. “And there’s no better time than now to eliminate that stubborn fat that resists all efforts of diet and exercise. CoolSculpting is an FDAapproved procedure, and it’s fast and easy. Call us and set up a consultation today to see if it’s right for you!”

UNDERSTANDING THE DANGERS

A Blood Clot Can Be Just a Bump in the Road
L
ast year Officer Mark Somer discovered that he had a potentially dangerous blood clot. He says, “I went to my family doctor and saw several specialists but I ran into dead ends. No one could help...and I became frustrated. Finally my hematology doctor recommended Local Vascular Surgeon, Ulises Baltazar MD, RVT, FACS.” “I felt like more than a patient...I felt like a friend they were going to help. Dr. Baltazar wanted me to tell him what was going on. He spent time with me, answered all of my questions, and really listened to me. He wanted to hear everything from the beginning, from the first doctor, through every step that I took. I liked that he took a personal interest in my case and made me feel important. He was genuinely concerned about my health and well-being. He even gave me his cell phone number! He made a plan and set a goal for me. He made sure that I followed the plan to get the best results.” “Dr. Baltazar put me on some medication for the short term and did some diagnostic testing in his office...so he could see the big picture. It was nice to get the testing done there without going to another facility. Dr. Baltazar said that a solu-
tion wouldn’t happen overnight, but this clot was just a bump in the road and we’d take care of it. When I went back to see him for more testing, he wasn’t satisfied with the progress. He invited me and my wife to come discuss a laser procedure. At that appointment, he walked us through every step, so we knew exactly what to expect. Throughout the procedure, he told me everything he was doing. I was very pleased that he answered all of my questions. The procedure went well and was successful!” Board-certified in Vascular Surgery with a reputation that is second to none, Dr. Baltazar performed the first case of Mechano-Chemical Ablation (MOCA) in Texas. He’s had years of training, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the arteries and veins. Dr. Baltazar says, “Varicose veins indicate an increased chance for blood clots in the superficial system and in the deep system...which are potentially lethal. That’s why treating varicose veins is a passion of mine...I want to keep your elegant circulatory system working in top form!” Office Somer adds, “I noticed from the beginning how experienced Dr. Baltazar is in his field and appreciated how confident he was in his ability to help me. Even so, he always talked to me in clear terms, one-on-one, and after my procedure, he personally called to check on me. Dr. Baltazar is a very compassionate man. I will always recommend people to him...and I consider him a friend!”

a Family Favorite
F
or as long as he can remember, Jimmy Cantu has been in the restaurant business. “My parents operated a restaurant when I was a kid,” says Jimmy, “and it was one of my favorite places to hang out! While completing my degree from the University of Houston College of Restaurant Management, I worked at several restaurants…working through the ranks as a waiter, bartender, and manager.” In 1997, Jimmy and his parents came up with their own concept. “We opened Pier 36 in Needville,” says Jimmy, “and focused on seafood using many, many family recipes for the menu.” The restaurant quickly became a Fort Bend favorite. People rushed to Needville for the fresh seafood…shrimp, red snapper and flounder straight from the Gulf, and local farm raised domestic catfish and oysters from the Texas and Louisiana coast. Today, in their chic yet casual location in Richmond, the Cantu family continues to serve up fabulous seafood. The menu features the same fresh favorites
fans have loved for years, plus new features like ceviche, grilled tuna, grilled rainbow trout, and crabmeat stuffed mushrooms. The full service bar, Pete’s Oyster Bar, is a hot spot where guests enjoy fresh oysters on the half shell, cocktails and frozen drinks. And, don’t forget the kids. They will love their special surprise treat...after they finish their meal of course! Pier 36 has grown tremendously, but it’s still a family affair. Jimmy says, “My parents officially retired from the restaurant, but that doesn’t stop my mom… she can’t stay away. My sister’s background is graphic design and she does all of the menus and promotional work for us. My wife and I both grew up in Richmond/Rosenberg and we love having the restaurant so close to home.” Jimmy is an active member of St. Laurence Catholic Church, the Richmond Rotary Club and the Lamar Education Award Foundation. And his daughter keeps him on the run too! “We would love to have your family join our family for some fresh gulf coast seafood,” says Jimmy, “except on Sundays when the restaurant is closed. I give my employees that day to spend with their own families. Any other day of the week, we’d love to have you join us!” Pier 36 Seafood Restaurant and Oyster Bar 281-238-4800 1410 E Highway 90A # 200 Richmond, TX 77406 www.pier36seafood.com

Chili Proceeds Save Lives
he 5th Annual Classic Chevy Sugar Land Chili Challenge proved to be the biggest and best yet! Don Kerstetter of Classic Chevrolet says, “This year we had over 40 teams participate, 3000 people attend, and we proudly raised almost $50,000 for the Sugar Land Police Officer’s Association. Thank you to our community!” We asked Sergeant Marty Morales of the Sugar Land Police Department how they utilize the cookoff funds. Sergeant Morales says, “The money raised in 2014 was used to purchase 100 Bail-Out Bags for our officers to carry in their cars. In response to the active shooter events our nation has experienced in places like Columbine and the movie theater in Aurora, CO, ALERRT—The Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center located at Texas State University—is training local law enforcement agencies on how to respond to these events. These Bail-Out Bags are part of that initiative.” Did you know that 85% of preventable deaths in combat are due to massive bleeding? “A person can bleed to death in two to three minutes,” says Sergeant Morales. “Often times officers are on the scene before EMTs and paramedics. Our first priority is to neutralize the threat, and the Bail-Out Bag contains extra magazines to accomplish that mission. But once the threat is gone, our officers can use the items in the bags to stabilize the injured...saving lives. We follow a protocol
called MARCH....Massive bleeding, Airway, Respiration, Circulation, Hypothermia. The Bail-Out Bags contain shrink wrapped tourniquets, gauze with clotting agents, israeli bandages, nasopharyngeal airways, HALO seals, trauma shears and foil emergency blankets. We aren’t treating injuries, but we can keep the victims alive until medical help arrives.” “While we hope we’ll never encounter an active shooter scenario here in Sugar Land,” continues Sergeant Morales, “we will be as well-equipped as possible just in case. What’s great is that the training and bags are useful in all sorts of situations. Our officers can assist the injured at a car accident scene or domestic violence incident before paramedics arrive. In mere minutes, we can save a life that might not otherwise have been saved. It’s unbelievable the way Don and the staff at Classic Chevrolet have grown the Chili Cookoff...and in doing so they are saving lives. For that, we are all forever grateful.”

Customized Medications for Pets

ow hard is it to get your dog or cat to swallow a pill? Your pet may not open his mouth or he may spit out the pill. You may press on your dog’s jaw to get him to open up, put the pill on the back of his tongue, and then try blowing on his nose to get him to swallow the medicine. Some people even push the pill into the center of a meatball...only to see their dog eat the tasty meat and spit the pill back out. You don’t want it to be a chore and you don’t want to struggle with your pet. What good is medication if it isn’t taken? Wouldn’t it be nice if your cat or dog was excited to take his medicine? Compounding could make everything easier! But what is compounding? It is a pharmacist’s method of preparing customized medications for patients, including pets. Animals often have the same diseases as humans, such as skin rashes, eye and ear infections, and cancer. Pets may also have anxiety from thunderstorms or cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension. Animals can be very difficult to treat with medications. The finicky pet who refuses to take medication based on taste or texture is a perfect candidate for compounding Started in 2003 by Dr. Lance Campbell, Campbell’s Compounding provides compounded and conventional medication, accepts most major prescriptions plans, and works with local physicians to care for your family...even the four-legged members! Dr. Campbell says, “Not only can our highly trained pharmacy staff create customized medications specific to the individual needs of your pet...we’ve also expanded our Sugar Land offerings to include over-the-counter dental treats and flea, tick, and mosquito treatments.” The pharmacists at Campbell’s work closely with your veterinarian to compound the best treatment for your pet. you might see here in Sugar Land. She says, “Whether your pet is a dog, cat, horse, bird, guinea pig, or hamster, vets know how important it is to create medicines in easy-to-give flavored forms that pets will be willing to take! We usually compound flavored liquids, creams, and chewable treats. Prescriptions for creams can be rubbed into the ear (like every dog loves!) or liquids and chewy treats can be flavored with fish, chicken or beef to make your dog or cat say ‘yum!’” You may not be able to explain to your pet the importance of taking medication...but a visit to Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, makes every dose a treat! Teach Your Kids What You Know
W
ith Father’s Day quickly approaching, we asked local dentist, Dr. Thomas Lomonte, DDS what he considers the two most important things everyone should teach their children. His answer? How to brush properly...and how to fish! “As parents, we are blessed with a tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact on the future,” says Dr. Lomonte. “I’ve always believed that the best thing we can do is to spend time with our kids and teach them what we know. My father taught me to fish and I taught my son Matt…you can’t beat the quality of time when you’re

out on the peaceful lake and it’s just you, your kid and a fishing pole. And into adulthood, fishing—or whatever activity you share with your child—can become a great escape for them. I do a lot of saltwater fishing and compete in redfish tournaments...and each and every time it takes me back to the lazy days with my dad and the relaxed feelings of childhood.” And of course, since Dr. Lomonte knows teeth, he also taught his kids the ABCs of brushing. “It is alarming how many people don’t know how to brush properly,” says Dr. Lomonte, “and even more alarming is the number of people that don’t brush at
all or at the wrong time. You’re only given one set of permanent teeth...you need to take care of them. Think a hard or medium toothbrush does a better job? Maybe not! Depending on how vigorously you brush and the strength of your teeth, medium and hard-bristled brushes could actually damage the gums, root surface, and protective tooth enamel. Drop into my office anytime. I can Amy Sharp help you pick a toothbrush and show you proper brushing techniques. Don’t forget the kids...an early start to great brushing is important!” A native Texan who grew up in Beaumont, Dr. Lomonte has been giving Fort Bend families great smiles for over thirty years. He says, “When you come in here, you’re more than a patient, you’re a friend of mine. Drop by anytime to hang out and chat about fishing (or brushing!) and more!”

Customizing Your Current Home: Remodel Instead of Moving! by Sarah Warburton

e love our neighborhood,” says local mom April Mason. “My son’s in Junior High, we’ve got playgrounds, parks and shopping within walking distance. So instead of moving and settling for less room and increased home prices, we decided to refinance and put that money into remodeling our current home. We used one company for painting, one for flooring, and Teri Gilberg, the “Re-modelista,” to update and remodel our kitchen. The other contractors did a good job, but they were not great with communicating during the process or updating us on the costs. Teri was on top of everything and communicating with her was so easy. I just wish I’d known I could call her for all the work!” “I looked on Houzz.com and showed Teri what I liked...she really has an interior design edge...that’s a bonus! The whole experience was like working with your sister. Whether I was picking out tile or looking at granite, I’d ask her opinion...and she’d tell me. I was stressing out about the white granite, you know you only get a little piece as a sample. She told me it would look sharp. Then we went out to the granite yard and her right hand man, Hector, and my

husband picked out the piece we used. Teri was right, it looks so good when we put it in!” “We updated our kitchen with clean lines, modern and airy with soft grey walls and light and dark grey accents throughout. Teri’s team took down the wall between our kitchen and living room. They maintained all the architectural features like the high beams and arches and it’s a perfect match. Our light fixture is a gorgeous modern cylinder. All the contractors Teri used were great, I’d give them an A+. They installed tiles, white granite counters, a glass backsplash, chrome faucets, the oven range and stainless hood for the stove and more! There’s a beautiful flow throughout the entire house.” “I love the way our home has our own stamp on it now. I had a neighbor walk in and say, “Your home looks just like a model home!” Everything looks exquisite...and Teri was always looking for ways to save us money without sacrificing style!”

Feeling Cool It’s Hard To Stop A Trane

in the Hot Summer Months
I
t’s June in Houston, it’s hot, and it’s just going to get hotter. The average high temperature in July and August will be 94 degrees. At this time of year, everyone needs a reliable air conditioner. What happens if yours unexpectedly stops working? Last July, Shirley Allen was excited to downsize and buy a new, smaller, townhome for herself. After purchasing her new home, she did not expect the air conditioning to go out after just eight months. She was disappointed, and with this emergency, she needed good service quickly. She called Jackson Air & Heat, in Sugar Land, a Trane dealer. Based on their excellent reputation over the years, this was the only company she called. From start to finish, Brian Jackson definitely made the process extremely satisfying. “He gave me the prices and it turned out very well,” Shirley says. “They were really nice and clean and neat...and even moved the old unit out of my attic!
It was a major undertaking, but I was very pleased.” Such a big job took more than a couple of hours, but Shirley was completely satisfied with the excellent work done by Jackson Air! Jackson Air & Heat is a family owned and operated business that has been located in Sugar Land since 1982. Most of their customers are referred to by family, friends, and neighbors. Repairs and installations are done in homes and businesses and they possess both professional training and attention to details. Jackson Air & Heat is EPA and NATE certified, repeat winners of the “Award of Excellence” endorsed by SugarLandNetwork.com, and recipient of the Angie’s List Super Service Award. According to Brian, “We like to say we have a License to Chill! Our customers enjoy the comfort that shows how well we keep our word. We love our work and we love our community!” Call today to get a free evaluation of your existing system. You can get
the best quality air conditioning and heating equipment with 100% money back guarantee. Jackson Air & Heat gives customers reliable and personal service on all jobs. Baby Teeth...At an All-Time High by Amy Sharp
D
id you know that each year, Delta Dental conducts the Original Tooth Fairy Poll? According to their surveys, in 2014 busy tooth fairies left approximately $255 million under American kids’ pillows and averaged $4.36 per lost tooth...and first-time tooth losers received an average of $5.75! 44 percent of tooth fairies paid based on the amount of cash she had at the time, while 39 percent of tooth fairies said they left money equivalent to each child’s age. Dr. Bianca Sanchez at Little People’s Dentistry says, “Sometimes I think the tooth fairy is not very good at math! Remember, every child in your home will expect the same. If your tooth fairy pays by age, she may not know that the canines and back molars come out at age ten or even twelve...and that can get pricey fast!” Part of folklore since before the Middle Ages, the tooth fairy holds a firm place in American culture. “The tooth fairy is a wonderful childhood memory,” says Dr. Sanchez, “and she really encourages children. Let them know that the tooth fairy loves for teeth to be shiny and healthy, and the only way to make sure they are is to brush after every meal and floss every night. I’m proud to be the tooth fairy’s helper too. Visit a dentist
twice a year, so your child will be on the right path to having teeth the tooth fairy loves!” Think your tooth fairy isn’t “keeping up with the Jones?” The good news is that according to the Delta Dental poll...only 17 percent of parents reported children who were unsatisfied with their gift. Dr. Sanchez says, “Don’t stress too much over what the tooth fairy gives your child. Most kids are just as happy with a little toy or a good book instead of money. Whatever the tooth fairy brings, the important thing is keeping your child’s mouth healthy and giving kids a sense of pride in their good oral hygiene. I’m here to answer all the questions you may have about those tricky, wiggly teeth. And bring me your tooth fairy stories too! n March 16 in Biarritz, France, Sugar Land’s own Frederic Perrier became one of only nine French chefs from North America (28 in the entire world) this year to be awarded with the highly elusive title “Maitre Cuisinier de France”. The “Master Chef” status is an honor bestowed only upon those who have been nominated by other Master Chefs and whose mastership of Traditional French cooking and techniques along with a superior qualification and professional culture are exceptional. A native of Lyon, France and a resident of Fort Bend, Frédéric Perrier has also been an Executive Chef in New York City, cooking for heads of state and celebrities. Now, with three restaurants: Aura Brasserie, Hoggs-n-Chicks, and now Live Oak Grill he brings together friends and family from all over Fort Bend and Greater Houston. Chef Perrier says, “Good food makes every day a special occasion!”

At Aura Brasserie, you get incredible food in a beautiful, non-intimidating atmosphere. Open five nights a week, for a mini-excursion to France, drop by Aura Brasserie to experience a menu with tastes for every budget and palate...and an atmosphere full of joie de vivre! Chef Perrier’s newest venture celebrates his Texas home...he and his partner at Hoggs n’ Chicks, Roque Baecker, joined forces to purchase and breath new life into Live Oak Grill. Roque says, “Chef Perrier is the brains and tastebuds behind Hogg-nChicks at Sienna Plantation, so you know he’s an expert on fried chicken and pulled pork. He and I have always loved the spirit of Live Oak Grill. We might be fixin’ to add a couple new drinks or dishes or to expand the patio and add live music, but don’t believe the rumors! We’re keeping the comfort food you love, the down-home Texas atmosphere...and definitely the name!” Do what you love...and you’ll never work a day in your life. Chef Frédéric may look like one of the hardest working men in Fort Bend, but he says,“I even love to cook at home. I live, love, do everything through my cooking.”

s a successful business grateful to our Fort Bend county communities, Milagro Salons (pronounced Me-la-gro) takes it’s name from the Spanish word for Miracle, and that’s exactly what they strive to do in and out of the salon. “In my twenty-five years as a stylist, over seventy-five percent of my business has been women” says Mark Anthony, owner of Milagro Salons in Missouri City. “We have women guests who we’ve had the privilege of seeing for many years who unfortunately have also had cancer.” He says, “We see the effects of cancer firsthand in our salon. Some guests request we shave their hair off prior to it falling out… It’s important to these women to choose when and how they lose their hair. We consider it an honor that these women trust Milagro Salons during one of the most difficult experiences in their lives... we treat them with the dignity they deserve and like royalty when they entrust our team with a request such as this.” For years the entire salon has donated their time to the annual “Couture for the Cause.” Mark adds, “This is only one way our team gives back to the community.” The highlight of the event is a fashion show featuring models whose lives have been touched by cancer. Mark says, “No one would know the majority of the beautiful models are cancer survivors or are still fighting their personal battle. Our team designs hairstyles unique to each model… it’s our privilege to be invited to participate each year!” Mark says “Cancer touches too many lives, affecting wives, mothers, daughters...and everyone who loves them. We’re happy to use our talents
to help!” This event raises both awareness and funds for a great cause. Each year we see more local businesses and individuals pitch in to lend a hand. As a leader in giving back to the greater community both Milagro Salons and the AVEDA line of holistic beauty products make the world a better place driven by a shared vision of connecting beauty, environment and wellbeing. Mark adds, “The team at Milagro Salons is one of the best in the business and giving back is how we try to thank our community for our success.” Milagro Salon ~ 281-778-2500 8790 Highway 6 South, Ste. 150 Missouri City, TX 77459 www.MilagroSalons.com

GRAND WINDOWS & INTERIORS Transforming 2015 from Bland to Grand!
Y
our Life’s events, Your Life’s celebrations, and Your Life’s everyday comforts—Candelario and Caron Lopez of Grand Windows and Interiors, love to be a part of the excitement of transforming your house to a home! Holidays come and go but the memories of gatherings of friends and family in your home last forever. Having the right team to prepare your home for the holidays- whether that means freshening up colors of paint, selecting new window treatments, or changing the kitchen or baths- can make the process fun, the design functional , and the home gorgeous. Candelario Lopez is all about family and thrives on pleasing others. He takes pride in his work and his attention to the details of the installations definitely prepares a home of which you can be proud. Caron says, “I can create with confidence no matter how intricate the design, knowing Cande is the one that ultimately gives it his final touch and brings forth the WOW factor.” George and Marianne Paruch of Richmond, Texas say, “Caron and Cande have been a part of our home for ages! Over thirty years, our needs changed as our family grew. As parents themselves, Caron and Cande really understood. When we decided to build a new home, Cande measured the windows during construction, so some of the critical privacy shutters were installed before we moved in. The next step was to make the house our own. Let’s tell the truth, when you go to someone’s home you judge them on the one room you are alone in - the powder room!! Our was “builder basic” vanilla...until Caron and Cande got to work with one-ofa-kind crystal tiles, faux painting, massive mirrors and
crystal lights. Now people open the door to our powder room, lean back, and say WOW! Our dining room had intense afternoon sun...until Cande installed amazingly beautiful Roman shades. For an extra decorative touch, Caron chose handles (100s of them) for the cabinets and drawers throughout the house. Now that our children have grown and we often have grandchildren in this house, Caron and Cande go the extra mile to think of clever ideas to avoid dangerous pullcords on blinds in our windows. Calling Caron and Cande is like having friends over (ones with good taste, up-to-the-minute on trends). They are easy to work with, open to your needs and budget, you never feel pressured...just helped!” Whether you’re moving into a new home or creating a 2015 update of your current one, the team of experts at Grand Windows & Interiors can translate your personal style and transform your space through window treatments, custom drapery, area rugs, color consultation, cabinetry, re-upholstery, granite, tile, and more! Caron says to take note, “It takes time to create, plan, and deliver the design. The Thanksgiving and Christmas season is quickly approaching so it is not too early to be contacting Grand Windows and Interiors. Bring us your wish list now. Look at our website-we deliver beautiful design that is unique to your family.” “We want to make your everyday living, extraordinary,” says Caron. “We can take your home from bland to grand in 2015...come see us for a complimentary design consultation!”

Always Audi You never forget the moment you fell in love. “In July of 2009,” says Joey Se, a health care business entrepreneur and the owner of Houston City Centre’s Red Mango, “and my older son Julian just graduated in high school...so I gave him the graduation gift of a lifetime! Since both of us are avid road cyclists, I bought a Tour De France Package for our family. We joined the Grand Depart Group Ride in Monaco, South France. One late afternoon while we were dining at the Hotel de Paris in front of the Monte Carlo casino in Monaco, we saw a very flashy white car parked in front, an Audi R8. That’s where it all started....” “After we got home, I visited an area Audi dealer and realized the true value and luxury of the R8...but it would take six months to order and get it.” Then Joey learned there was actually one immediately available at Audi Central Houston. “The staff at Audi Central was unbeliev-

able...and so was the car! I was sold! I traded in my Porsche 911 and came home with a brand new red 2010 R8 V8!” Not only did Joey love the car, so did his wife, Gina, and his son. “Both were driving BMWs at the time,” says Joey, “but we quickly found that the Audi Q7 was a better fit for my wife, and the S4 was perfect for my son to take to college. And once again, the staff at Audi Central was out of this world...very nice and so attentive to our needs.” Since 2010, Joey and Gina have bought many Audi’s from Audi Central. “I think I’ve had five R8s,” says Joey, “I keep switching because they keeping getting better! And Gina has driven a couple of Q7s and the QS5.” Audi Central recognizes Joey’s loyalty. Danny Posey, the General Manager for Audi Central Houston, says “We love that the Se family loves our cars. We’ve even held an Audi event at the their beautiful Sienna home. A group of Joey’s friends were invited to enjoy the exhilarating experience of driving brand new Audi S and RS models with food catered from the fabulous Vallone’s.” Joey says, “It was so much fun, and my friends couldn’t believe that my dealership did that for me. I can truly say that Audi Central is always happy to take care of me and my family. I wouldn’t move to another dealership for anybody or anyone...for us, it’s always Audi! Have you considered an Audi? “One of the great things about Audi,” says Danny, “is that we have pre-owned vehicles priced from $5000 to new Audi’s at over a quarter million...and every buyer is equally valuable to us. We cater to a wide range of clientele. In fact, Audi also has a Foreign Business Professional Program that’s very popular here in our international city. It allows clients just arriving to the area on work visas to be able to drive an Audi (and who wouldn’t want to do that)! Stop in and pay us a visit...we’ll make it worth your while!”

avid Shaw, a long-term Rotarian, is a living example of the club’s motto: “Service above self.” Having served on numerous non-profit boards over 50 years in multiple states, David enjoys growing and supporting local charities. At an age when most people are settling into retirement, David Shaw has a brand new board position and mission. In 2013 David and his wife, Karen visited Angola State Penitentiary in Louisiana, at the urging of long-time friend Dr. Steve Harris. Once known as “America’s Bloodiest Prison,” violence in Angola has decreased by 80% since 1995. David said that once you were on the prison property, you felt the overwhelming presence of God. When asked what had caused the change, Senior Warden, Burl Cain said: “It was the Seminary Bible College. We started the college my first year here. And ... since then..., our violence rate began to drop…Our Bible College was the primary driver for this change.” That trip not only changed David and Karen’s opinion of prisons, they felt personally called to get involved with the Heart of Texas Foundation (HOTF). Founded by Grove Norwood, HOTF is a 501(c) (3) organization that privately funds a seminary inside the maximum-security fencing of the Darrington Penitentiary in Rosharon, Texas. In May 2015, the Southwestern Seminary at Darrington held its first graduation for 33 inmates who completed their four-year Bachelor of Science Degree in Biblical Studies. All seminarians are either lifers or serving extremely long sentences. They influence other prisoners who are not in the seminary to change their behavior and to be concerned about their children who are 70%+ destined to come into prison. As seminarians graduate, most will transfer in teams as “field ministers,” working with the Chaplains and Wardens in other Texas prisons. There is so much more to this story. Many entities and individuals in the public and private sector have supported The Heart of Texas Foundation to create a force for peace and reconciliation within the prison. Please go to their website to learn more about how this program is changing lives inside and outside of our Texas prisons. www.heartoftexasfoundation.org To contact David Shaw: tx.inmate.ministers@gmail.com 20 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2015

25 Years of Great Pizza!
R
ay Salti, father of three boys, knows that no matter what you do...your kids are going to crave pizza. That’s one reason he founded the first Pepperoni’s back in 1990 as an old-style relaxed pizza parlor with a friendly and family-oriented atmosphere. Ray says, “I was concerned about the ingredients in the food my kids were eating...so I decided to go all-natural and use only 100% unbleached, untreated wheat flour. And every Pepperoni’s pizza uses natural mozzarella cheese, and premium tomatoes for the sauce. I believe food should taste good...and be good for you, too!” Today this pizza represents 25 years of perfection! Whether you’re in the mood for Veggie or All the Meats, there is a variety of toppings to choose from...from traditional favorites like pepperoni and mushrooms to more eclectic choices like meatballs, eggplant, or artichoke hearts. Ray knows that even though most kids love pizza, some may have diet restrictions. Ray says, “Pepperoni’s
happily accommodates our gluten-free guests by offering a gluten-free crust, as well as vegan cheese upon request. Everyone should get to enjoy great pizza!” Although specializing in pizza, Pepperoni’s also offers subs, salads, pastas, calzones, wings and desserts. Pepperoni’s first location was such a success that today you’ll find many restaurants in the greater Houston area, with a new one set to open soon on West Alabama. Ray also owns the critically-acclaimed, farm-to-table restaurant, Ray’s Gourmet Country in Fulshear. Ray says, “Whether friends and families gather for a casual meal, a fine dining experience, or order out for pizza, you deserve fresh, highquality ingredients for delicious food you’ll feel good about eating. S
pring has sprung! And perhaps, over the winter months, the dust bunnies in your home have, too. Sal Lucatero, co-owner of Professional Maid Service claims, “Everyday is ‘Spring Cleaning’ day for us!” The desire to help women provide for their families led to the birth of Sal’s business back in 2000. Since then, he and his co-owner Max McCammond have worked with the Fort Bend Women’s Center presenting opportunities to those who want or need them. Professional Maid Service is not just a business to Sal...it has become much greater. “It doesn’t provide food and shelter for just my family and me,” he says, “it also provides a living for many others—my teams!” Wouldn’t you agree that it would be a shame to spend the best time of year in Texas inside the house scrubbing, mopping, washing, dusting and vacuuming? Let the professionals handle the grueling tasks at hand while you enjoy quality time with your family. Professional Maid Service prides themselves on “still doing things the old-fashioned way.” Sal considers himself honored to go to the client in person instead of giving estimates over the phone. He says, “Our reward is knowing that we are giving a helping hand and making a difference in so many different households. From the mom that is juggling work and family, to the people that are facing medical issue—whether a long term disability or an illness they have to overcome by long term treatment and simply can not do it for themselves—we are ready to extend our services.” These service professionals are uniformed, licensed and insured with marked company vehicles for your peace of mind. 22 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2015

Looking out for

Paul and Jonee Barnett
T
hink about all the times your folks have looked out for you. Maybe Dad slipped you a twenty for “traveling money” before you headed back to school or checked the oil in your engine and the air in your tires before you hit the road. Maybe Mom was always willing to take the kids so you could have a few hours peace. “If your parents are living in an older home,” says Paul Barnett, “their bathtub may not only look older and worn down...it may not be the safest choice for seniors. In addition to our Miracle Method Surface Refinishing, Jonee and I also recommend the Easy Step and our Safety Package. It’s a great way to help your folks enjoy relaxing in a soothing bath...without any worries!” The first step to an easier step is creating an easy access cut-out in your existing tub, turning it into a walk-in tub. “Everyone finds it easier and safer to step into a tub instead of trying to climb over the side,” says Paul. “We can retrofit the Easy Step® with or without a door and we can install it in porcelain, steel, fiberglass or acrylic tubs. Then we apply the same slip-resistant Miracle Method surface to the bottom of your tub that national hotel chains like the Marriott commission us to use. After that, we secure two ADA-approved safety grab bars. They are an important part of our safety package. Additional options include a curved shower rod, hand-held shower nozzle, and a tub chair.” And as an added bonus, the work can usually be done in a day...and if you save your cut-out, the process is completely reversible! Included in the Easy Step Bathroom Safety Package are two ADA-approved safety
grab bars and a slip-resistant surface applied to the bottom of the tub. Paul says, “It makes me feel great to know I’m installing such a solid, worthwhile product. We believe in looking out for our customers!” Jonee adds, “Don’t wait until there’s a problem to try to come up with a solution. Let us give you the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have done everything you can for you and your loved ones.” You can save Mom and Dad from a danger they may not even consider. After all, with a little help from Miracle Method, not only will their tub be safer... it could also look brand-new! Paul and Jonee invite you to call them for a free estimate... because a miracle is only one easy step away!

had a customer in the other day complaining that no matter what she tried, she couldn’t squash a spider infestation. I told her she needed to call John Onofrey at BUGCO!” J.D. Sellers knew who to call because he’s been there. “We had just moved into our new home,” says J.D., “and we had ants. Two or three other companies came out to eradicate the problem, but they just kept coming back. A friend tipped me off about BUGCO, and since they treated we haven’t seen an ant since! Two summers later—during one of the very dry years— we found chinch bugs in our yard and up the back of the house. I called John and he got rid of them for good!” J.D. is the coach and owner of Optimal Sports Performance in Stafford—the ultimate athletic training facility for all ages. “We’ve trained thousands of kids since 1994,” says J.D., “and more than 300 of them have gone on to receive athletic scholarships and/or play professional sports. We expanded our business in 2014 to a new facility, and with a new facility comes new problems...we had a spider infestation. Of course I called John, and he and the crew at BUGCO took care of it and
we’ve been insect-free ever since. I’ve earned the trust of my customers, and I have no problem recommending John to them when they need pest control. I know he’ll take care of them and exceed their expectations. He’s a great guy running a great company!” John says, “I’m glad we could eradicate the pests at both J.D.’s house and his business. As local guys, both myself and my partner Chris Millward know what kind of pests to expect... and how to deal with them. We offer inspections and treatment for termites and other pests, and rodent control and exclusion. And if you haven’t noticed...our rainy spring brought our pesky friends—the mosquitos— back in droves! If you’re tired of smelling like insect repellent just to sit in your backyard, consider mosquito misting. In fact, right now we’re offering our customers an incredible special on a mosquito misting system...you can get a 20 nozzle system installed for your outdoor living space at our cost ($1499)! Give us a call today!”

hat’s the philosophy on which Teddy Gryska and Marcus Jones—the two men behind Sugar Land’s Two Men & a Truck— have built their business. “We treat every customer we are moving like we would want our own grandmother to be treated,” says Teddy. “We only hire good people we’d welcome into our own home. If you’re moving out of state, we’ll guarantee the time we pack you up, that only your belongings will be on the truck, and the only stops will be food, fuel, and rest...so you’ll know exactly when we’ll deliver your things. You won’t have to sit around an empty house for days or worry that a box will get lost or misdelivered. We pay attention to detail, communicate, and really care about you and your belongings.” From your packing supplies, through packing, moving, and unpacking...Two Men & a Truck offers it all! With more than 15 years combined experience, our own Two Men & a Truck is growing rapidly. With the Grandma Rule™ in full effect, they have happy customers reaching into cities as far away as Victoria. But customers aren’t the only ones treated like Grandma...our community gets the royal treatment as well! Marcus says, “We took part in our national charity campaign, Movers for Moms. Together with our referral partners, Texas Community Referral Network and ProShred of Houston we were able to provide multiple drop-off sites in the community...and all of the items collected benefitted the Fort Bend Women’s Center. Similarly, we participate in the Movers for Mutts campaign benefitting Fort Bend County Animal Services and are proud sponsors of our Sugar Land Skeeters. We are endlessly committed to partnering with local charities and giving back to the community when the need arises. It’s part of what makes us the “Movers Who Care!” Ready to move? Teddy says, “Our efforts to reinvest and give back to worthy causes will continue, just as we strive to continuously exceed your expectations with every move. Your Hometown Plumbers!
A Father’s Legacy
by Keva Horry
I
t’s been said that “children will become what you are; so be what you want them to be.” Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing has done just that as the father of three sons. Having served the Fort Bend community for over nineteen years (and counting), Alan’s sons Beau, Luke and Jake have learned what commitment, dedication and a strong work ethic-- the literal blood, sweat, and tears--will produce. As youngsters, they grew up around the business watching, learning and waiting to take on the legacy their father had set in motion. Beau and Luke have earned their Journeyman’s License and run their own truck. Jake jumped right in and earned his Apprentice Plumber’s License. When asked what they have learned from their father, their responses were what any father would want to hear. Beau says, “Everything I
know I learned from my dad, and he’s the best father and the best teacher for sure. He can’t be everywhere, so I know I have to do the kind of job that would make him proud on every job. That’s why we always treat you and your home with total respect.” Also reflecting on his father’s teachings, Luke says, “Dad’s old school, so he’s all about getting the job done without making fancy promises upfront. He taught us to ‘work smarter, not harder.’ If you take the time to understand the problem and fix it the way it should be fixed the first time, it’s less trouble for the customer and less work in the long run. The only job worth doing is a job done right.” Alan’s example of hard work and dedication was not only displayed when it came to his business, but also as a family man. He has been a very supportive father in his children’s schooling and sports activities at
Elkins High. His son Jake says, “In all the years, even between me and both my brothers, Dad has never missed a game or a sporting event. My dad and uncle were always there for us, and taught us that no matter what’s going on in life...family comes first!” The statement: “Behind every good man is a strong woman,” is not just a cliche. Alan’s wife, Jennifer says, “Our boys have been going out with their dad and uncle since they were about eight or nine years old. They’ve got the credentials, the experience, and they want to make their Dad proud. Maybe I’m not an impartial observer, but I think he’s been a great father!” Happy Father’s Day from Alan’s Plumbing! Alan’s Plumbing

Go Outside and Play! by Amy Sharp
as your family been caught in the electronic rut? You get home, click on the TV, the XBox, the computer or the iPad. Instead of giving your family more electronics (and guaranteeing another sedentary year), the best Christmas present might be a pool you can enjoy year-round. Kryshon Bratton, co-owner of Bratton Pools along with her husband Michael, says, “One of the most common comments we get after completing a project is that we turned ‘inside’ people into ‘outside’ people. Clients say they love to come home from work and soak or swim...and enjoy the view and the sounds of their waterfall in the cooler months. And the kids are inviting friends over for a great time in their ‘fun’ backyard.” Michael and Kryshon both have an avid appreciation for the water. Michael was a swimmer at Fort Bend’s own Clements High School, and Kryshon swam for neighboring Katy Taylor. While at the University of Texas, Michael got into lifeguarding. After graduation, he moved back here and opened a lifeguarding business. Kryshon says, “The business was extremely successful, but after our daughters were born, we wanted something different for our family. Given our backgrounds and extensive knowledge of pools, the natural progression was to go into pool construction, repair and maintenance.” And Bratton Pools was born. What sets Bratton Pools apart? “Our entire process!” says
Kryshon, “We go out to your home, take a look at your space, and get a feel for what you are wanting. Then we come up with 3D plans where you can really see your ideas come to life. Every pool we build is custom. We have no set designs. Your pool will not look exactly like anyone else’s. What I love is that through the designs, we really see the personality of our clients come out! It really is your pool!” Of course, design is only the beginning of the process. Kryshon says, “When you build a pool with us, we don’t manage the construction remotely. We are very hands-on and supervise the process directly every step of the way. Plus, we are very proud of our crew and what we do. Our staff has been with us a long time, and many are Certified Pool Operators and Certified Maintenance Operators.” A family owned and operated business, Bratton Pools maintains an A+ rating with the BBB. Construction, renovation and pool maintenance are all in their menu of services, as well as full outdoor space planning and construction...including outdoor kitchens, living areas, entertainment areas, fire pits and patio extensions. Check out Bratton Pools on FaceBook and see the possibilities. It’s a gift that will help your family take the fun outside! Bratton Pools ~ 281-988-7700 www.brattonpools.com

In 2010 he was selected as one of the top “40 under 40” Entrepreneurs and Executives in Fort Bend. Home is Where the Heat HEART Is! D
id you know Mr. A/C himself is a home-grown A/C expert? Bryan says, “I started life in Northwest Houston, but my family moved to Fort Bend in 1976. This is where I became friends with Chance Kamp, the co-owner of All Out A/C and owner of All Out Off Road...and this is where I raised my boys Cody and James. As a dad, I try to be a guide, teaching my kids a great work ethic. I could not be prouder to have my sons working alongside me and Chance, who’s more like a brother than a business partner. Cody just graduated in May from Texas A&M University...and will work alongside me full-time, while James has been working alongside Chance at All Out Off Road. Giving the best prices and the best service to Fort Bend is a point of hometown family pride at All Out A/C.”
We asked Bryan, “What makes a house into a home?” It’s not the furniture you choose or the number of rooms it has...it’s how comfortable your family is living there! Chance Kamp and Bryan Bellamy aka Mr. A/C of All Out A/C say, “We both raised families here in Texas, so we know heat...and it’s got no place in your home this summer! Whether you’ve got an A/C that just can’t compete with the rising temperatures, hot spots that never go away, or an energy-sucking A/C that sounds like an outboard motor, we believe home should be where the heart is...not the heat!”
Your neighbors and local businesses already know they can call All Out A/C in any heat emergency. Realtors, hotel managers, car dealerships, emergency rooms, new homeowners, elderly couples, single mothers, and extended families have all made that call... over and over Mr. A/C has saved the day. Bryan says, “We believe in giving you a clear understanding of what’s going on and suggesting a range of options for your timeline and budget. We specialize in upgrading systems and improving ductwork to increase the efficiency and cooling power of your A/C system...with our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. Making your home comfortable starts with a company that puts your comfort first!”
281-238-9292 -
Be comfortable AND save money in your home, your business, or your beach house with a new, energyefficient A/C unit. Bryan says, “A new variable speed unit will run in a lower, quieter, more energy-efficient setting….essentially it doesn’t have to work as hard to keep you cool. Customers have told us their electric bill dropped so much the new A/C actually paid for itself!” “We’re always happy to swoop in and get you out of a jam...but we’d love to know you’ll be prepared for the summer ahead. Right now you can save money with CenterPoint and manufacturer rebates up to $2,875.00 as well as options that include 0% interest financing until 2020 with approved credit! These deals won’t last...nab ‘em before the real heat hits this summer!”
