THE RIGHT VEHICLE... THE RIGHT VEHICLE...

Brazos Customs & Service Center takes you to hog heaven! Chrome so bright, it’s practically blinding. Handlebars so high you could fly a flag on them. Back tires that would fit on a bulldozer. And that rumble…the deafening rumble. Everything about a Harley-Davidson motorcycle says “tough guy.” So it’s fitting that Bill Ballint, who once stared down Stage 4 lymphoma – and lived to tell the tale – spends his days making these tough choppers as tough as he is, at his Brazos Customs & Service Center. From nine-to-five types looking for their first wheels, to veteran club riders with thousands of miles under their belts, local bikers have been trusting their customization jobs, service and repairs to Ballint, who runs the shop with office manager Lisa along with wife Sharon, and daughter Kaitlin for years. Riders wanting to be wowed need look no further than “Eddie” — a mean, low-profile chopper that pays homage to our military heroes, the legendary P-51 Warhawk fighter planes from WWII, and “Eddie,” the mascot of ‘80s metal band Iron Maiden. With its fighter plane-styled tank and a tail fin fender, custom cams, mini ape handlebars and Paul Yaffe Exhaust – complete with flame thrower – “Eddie” recently took third place in the American Full Custom Class at the annual, mammoth Lone Star Rally in Galveston. Ballint shares his expertise on customizing, upkeep, and finding the perfect Harley or chopper: UC: What are seasoned bikers looking for in a custom job? Bill Ballint: Harley riders come in looking to customize their Street Glides, their Road Glides, their V-RODs and CVOs. We’ll do anything from pipes, exhausts, tires, LED lights, custom paint and airbrushing, and even stereo systems. With Harleys, everyone always wanted everything chromed out. Now, chrome is out—black is in. UC: What separates you from larger Harley shops? BB: We’re proud that we retain master mechanics like long time team member Corey Himebaugh. The same people have been working on our bikes since we started. Bikers want skilled craftsmanship and consistency. We’re proud that we can offer that, while the bigger shops have higher costs and more turnover.

UC: And how about rookie riders? Do you have to get a new Harley? BB: Actually, the used market is the way to go. You can get a used Harley with just a few thousand miles on it for a third of the cost. Once you customize with us, you could have a bike worth three times what you paid. UC: You’re not just a biker’s best friend— you service ATVs and farm equipment too. BB: A large part of our business is helping off-roaders and hunters with their ATVs— we’ve done vehicles for Ducks Unlimited. And we’ve got farming equipment clients who come from as far as El Campo and Wharton. UC: Back to the bikes: Riding is a family affair for you. What do you love most about it? BB: My daughter Kaitlin says, “You don’t focus on anything, just what’s ahead.” And my wife calls it, “wind therapy.” She loves to point out that you never see a motorcycle outside a psychiatrist’s office!

n 1947, when Katy was little more than miles of boiling blue skies, rippling prairie grass, and a smattering of houses, a group of citizens gathered to create the Katy Volunteer Fire Department. They had obstacles to overcome...no equipment, no building, and no funding. A few years later, R.G. Fussell, the newly-elected fire chief, and other fire department members threw a fundraiser in the Katy School auditorium. It seemed as though all of Katy came out that day in 1953, and the people gave money not just for a fledgling fire department, but for a dream--to carve a bonafide Texas community out of that hard caliche soil--and to bestow upon it all the resources it needed to protect its citizenry. Over three thousand dollars were raised, and a year later a new fire department building was erected on Second Street. In 1983, ground was broken for the present day station on Avenue D...and Katy was starting to come into its own. Katy dropped the word “volunteer” from the department head logo in 2009 because most of its members were paid professionals. The department had proven itself more than capable of handling emergency medical situations, fire suppression, and hazardous waste spills. It had literally taken blood, sweat and tears...but to the delight of all the grateful citizens of Katy, the good guys had finally made good. Few people are more delighted to honor the brave men and women of the Katy Fire Department than True Fix Air Conditioning. Like the Katy Fire Department, air conditioning has evolved into a well-oiled machine. True Fix owner Gerald Svetlik says, “The new

Trane TruComfort™ systems are as innovative as they are reliable. They run at the exact speed necessary to keep your home comfortable. The unit is whisper quiet, removes humidity, and consumes a lot less electricity than the energy-guzzlers of the past...and an additional option, you can control the system from anywhere with your smartphone. Trane has an optional 10-year worry-free parts and labor warranty. Add in the rebates from CenterPoint on high-efficiency systems...and it’s easy to lower your energy bills and stay out of the fiery heat for the remainder of the summer!” “August in Texas is no laughing matter,” continues Gerald. “If your air conditioning goes out, you might feel like you need to call the fire department...but you can call us here at True Fix.” A 2015 BBB Winner of Distinction, the True Fix family would like to extend a huge “Thank You!”to the Katy Fire Department for their continued protection in the city of Katy, and also to the citizens of Katy for trusting True Fix with their cooling needs for over 40 years. is no stranger to challenging work. This Vietnam veteran was aboard the very first aircraft carrier converted to a nuclear warship. With a degree in science, J.J. followed up six years in the Navy with seven in the oilfield. Today, he’s the grease that makes the wheels run smoothly behind MSK Enterprises, the parent company of local favorite, Dekker’s Mesquite Grill in Fulshear. “After the oilfield,” says J.J., “I went back to UTSA with an eye on a business degree and a part-time job at TGI Fridays. It was different than anything I had ever done. I really enjoyed the constant interaction with other employees and the public...and my thoughts on the future started to change. I became the GM of that Fridays while still in college, and eventually opened four additional restaurants for the franchisee.” And J.J.’s future shaped itself from there. He hooked up with Carl’s Jr., a job that moved him to California and made him area supervisor of eight restaurants. “I really feel that each piece of my life was training me for my current job,” says J.J. “Fridays gave me full-service experience, and Carl’s Jr. provided me with both fast food experience and multi-unit experience.” He moved back to Texas when a multi-concept opportunity presented itself, and ultimately landed a position in Dallas as Director of

Operations for five stores and two concepts--an operation that grew to 199 stores and 6 concepts with J.J. “I knew of Mike Knobelock (owner of Dekker’s) through work,” says J.J. “Mike had two concepts and 19 stores, and was looking for someone to help fulfill their vision of expansion and different concepts.” And that began J.J.’s life in Richmond, TX. Today he’s COO and Vice President of MSK Enterprises--that’s 45 Church’s Chicken’s, 21 Little Caesar’s, two Captain D’s, three Sears Appliance stores, and their own concept... our delicious Dekker’s. “Working with Mike and his wife Patty has been a terrific experience,” says J.J. “They are my extended family. Mike, myself and our CFO Brian work as a team to decide the best options for all involved. The work is challenging...we have over 1300 employees, and every decision we make affects these folks. But it’s a great feeling when you know you are doing right by so many people.” J.J., his wife Elizabeth, and daughters Jaqueline and Jolie enjoy travelling and participating in our community. “Jaqueline loves parades,” says J.J. “Many of you

probably caught her on the 4th of July in Fulshear riding with the Valley Forge Trail Riders and Dekker’s. This is home for us. I grew up in Laredo and I’ve been around the world. But my heart is in Texas...and the small town atmosphere here is just what I want for Jaqueline and Jolie. I’m right where I’m supposed to be!” Mike always says, “There’s nothing better than friends and family bonding over fabulous food.” And with the new expansion at Dekker’s--including additional seating, another bar and fireplace, and party accommodations for up to 60--it’s better than ever! Make your reservations today for any day of the week!

Donna Boganwright’s Story

r. Eric Humble—the board certified Plastic Surgeon at Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery— believes people can be truly rejuvenated by making their visions of themselves a reality. “When you like who you are,” says Dr. Humble, “you can enjoy life to its fullest!” Part of Donna Boganwright’s vision for herself was losing weight.“I lost 60 pounds,” says Donna. “I felt great, but when I looked in the mirror...I just saw the sagging skin. I really needed a facelift.” Donna spoke to her family doctor, who researched plastic surgeons and recommended Dr. Humble. “When I went in to Dr. Humble’s office,” continues Donna, “everyone I encountered was just great. Very sweet and available to help. I had always considered getting my eyes done... and after speaking with Dr. Humble, I decided to go ahead and do eyes and eyebrows along with the facelift. Everything went great. And I was so impressed that Dr. Humble gave me his cell phone number so that I could call him if I needed anything at all. He’s truly concerned about his patients’ happiness...he never wants you to worry!” Today, Donna has lost 30 additional pounds, and she’s loving life! “We pride ourselves on being fun grandparents,” says Donna. “We love traveling the country. We just got back from New Mexico—my husband drove the Harley out there and I

followed behind. It’s true, when you like the way you look...you feel good. And Dr. Humble is the man for the job. A friend of mine had never considered a facelift. When she found out I’d had one, her comment was, ‘I had no idea a facelift could come out looking so natural.’ Thank you Dr. Humble! You are amazing!” Dr. Humble says, “One of the things I learned in my residency is that patients that have facelifts live—on average—an extra seven years. At first this concept did not seem valid, because I did not understand the role of self confidence in one’s life. This was confirmed after I performed my first facelift. My patient found renewed love of life, began working out, and making healthy choices. That moment helped me form my philosophy of care: every patient should walk out of our office feeling confident...because confidence changes lives. I’m glad I could give this gift to Donna. May her fun and adventurous love of life continue for years to come!” At Sugar Land Face & Body you’ll find a full range of solutions...from simple but effective skin care products to injectables to facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation, and body contouring. With an in-house AAAASF certified surgical center, it’s the full gamut under one roof. Dr. Humble says, “I’m here to erase those imperfections that drive you crazy...so that you too can live life to it’s fullest!”

Transforming 2015 from Bland to Grand!

t’s August and the hustle and bustle for the holidays is fast approaching. Enjoy your 2015 holidays with new decor. “Bland is not an option,” says Caron Lopez, owner of Grand Windows & Interiors. Caron’s goal for your home is “Gorgeous, yet uniquely and comfortably yours!” David and Robyn’s transformation has begun! They searched for the team who would listen to a wish, and then go beyond that wish with striking, innovative ideas, and put it into action. Robyn explains, “We had seen advertisements for Grand Windows & Interiors in several Upclose publications. After perusing Grandwindows.com, we contacted them for guidance regarding some changes we were wanting to undertake in our home.” With a smile, Robyn adds, “After twenty years it’s time for an update of colors, style, etc. The team at Grand Windows & Interiors are competent, caring professionals with the highest degree of integrity and honesty. Caron and Joni have directed the process and remained budget conscious in every decision. Taking our ideas into consideration, they tweaked the concepts and listened to our preferences, allowing the end product to become uniquely our vision. The Lopez family business has made the redecorating process fun and enjoyable. They became our friends! With all sincerity, we recommend Grand Windows & Interiors to assist you in your redecorating project.”

Only BEFORE and TRANSFORMING remodel photos are shown above. The GRAND REVEAL of the whole home will be in the next issue of Upclose and on grandwindows.com. Grand Windows & Interiors wants you to know that your project, big or small, starts from a wish and, with their help, it can take form quickly like this one. Kitchen--top cabinets now painted white, and widened to 15” for larger plates, plus cabinets now go to the ceiling with glass, accent lighting and under counter lighting. The big fluorescent light box that hung from the ceiling is gone, now giving a feel of uplifting ceilings. Stylish pendants lights now steal the show. New hues of soft blue enhance the French feel of the kitchen and living area. Baths--now stately and innovative with Silestone cabinet tops and Porcelanosa wall tile, emulating marble without the upkeep. Caron designed the “French trumeau mirror.” A waterproof shutter will go in the arched shower window. Behind bi-fold doors in the hall to the dining area, was the washroom--now it’s a new butler’s pantry, which just thrills Robyn! The washer/dryer are now stacked where the old bathroom shower was and the unused garden tub area became a large luxury shower. The contractor and craftsmen Caron selected for the wholehouse remodel worked efficiently and respected her expertise... and she respects theirs. GRAND REVEAL coming soon!

hen Brigadier General Donald Wagner of the U.S. Air Force was considering purchasing some investment rental property in Sugar Land, thorough home inspections were at the top of his list. “One of the houses I was interested in was built in 1985,” says General Wagner, “so I wanted to make sure I knew exactly what I might be purchasing.” The General’s real estate agent recommended several options... and he called them all. He says, “I liked the prompt response and answer I received from John Onofrey, the owner of Top 2 Bottom Inspections. I scheduled the inspection with John and he did exactly what he said he was going to do with regard to expense and timing. He walked me through the house and showed me the areas of concern. He also wrote up an extremely thorough document... which helped me make an informed decision about the house. I was very impressed with John. He was upfront about what he could do and how much it would cost….not selfserving at all. I appreciate that!” About eight years ago, John opened BUGCO Pest Control with his longtime friend Chris Millward. “A lot of our inspection customers were requesting pest control,” says John, “and Chris had years of experience in pest control with a national company...so it was a great fit! We offer inspections and treatment for termites and other pests, rodent control and exclusion, and mosquito misting...very popular this rainy summer!” BUGCO Pest Control is committed to verifying that you have a pest problem before taking action and will always recommend the appropriate treat8 ~ UPCLOSE Katy ~ August-September 2015

ment. General Wagner says, “I actually had a different pest control company visit the house I was planning to buy...they told me that there were no termites. But when John came for the home inspection, he found that there were termites and he showed them to me. BUGCO will certainly be my pest control company of choice going forward.” When you need a professional real estate inspection or pest control in the Houston area...one call does it all. “I was completely satisfied...the whole deal, from start to finish!” says General Wagner. ur pool is more than 33 years old,” says Shirley Morris of Katy, “and we had a crack. My husband John and I knew the problem was urgent...we couldn’t afford the potential damage the leakage could cause to our house foundation. We also wanted to upgrade the look of our old pool...new travertine coping, new tile and plaster. We just needed to find the right company for the job.” Having read about Bratton Pools in a local publication, Shirley asked the folks at her local pool supply store about Bratton’s reputation. “No one had a bad thing to say,” says Shirley, “So we gave them a call. Mike Bratton came out and looked at our pool.” Mike says, “The Morris’ had a crack because their bond beam needed repair. The beam is a horizontal layer of concrete used to increase wall strength. It lives under your pool coping, and its function is preventing wall cracks and maintaining the integrity of your pool. The Morris’ were right to be concerned!” ”We picked out our new coping, tile, and plaster,” continues Shirley, “and Mike gave us an estimate for the job, including fixing the beam. The estimate was fair...comparable to others we had received. But what really separated Mike from the rest was his ability to explain the beam repair to us. He addressed our concerns,

explained to us exactly what was happening, and provided us a detailed action plan on how it would be fixed. We felt very comfortable going forward with the work after talking to Mike!” True to Bratton Pools standards, the detailed action plan was executed just as Mike described. “The work was excellent,” says Shirley. “And Mike’s team is very impressive. Everyone was wonderful and professional...so nice and polite, and they kept the work area clean. Plus--even with all the rain--the work was done in under two weeks. That beam was worrisome for us...that they could get it fixed so quickly was such a relief. And the new upgrades to the pool are just beautiful!” A family owned and operated business, Bratton Pools maintains an A+ rating with the BBB. They don’t just repair pools...they can create your dream backyard! New pool construction, renovation and repairs are all in their repertoire of services...as well as full outdoor space planning and construction. That includes outdoor kitchens, living areas, entertainment areas, fire pits and patio extensions. Check out Bratton Pools on FaceBook and see for yourself the endless possibilities! Pencils, Notebooks...and a Smile! by Amy Sharp

re your kids as ready for the start of school as you are? Before the big day arrives, treat them to a mini-vacation at a place that reminisces the best of the sunny Caribbean...with surfboard beds and a floor-to-ceiling coral reef and fish mural. At Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, Dr. Faisal Khan knows what makes kids smile…even about going back to school! Do you have your “back-to-school” smile supplies ready? Maybe your kids have their toothbrushes and toothpaste…but what about their dental floss and mouthguards? Dr. Khan explains, “Children’s teeth should be brushed at least twice per day using a soft bristled brush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Parents should help them until about age six or until your child is capable of reaching all areas of the mouth. And wherever two teeth are adjacent to each other, kids are at risk for between teeth cavities. I know it’s hard to teach children to floss...but we have tips on making flossing fun. If your child is playing a high contact sport this fall, don’t disregard the importance of a mouthguard. Not only do they protect the oral cavity...recently, certain custom mouthguards have been found to also offer some protection against concussions. With several types of mouthguards available, we can help you choose the best one for your child!” Do you have a toddler who’s just not excited about big brother and big sister going off to school? school starts, Dr. Khan offers special morning appointments just for those little bitty ones. “Like the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry,’ says Dr. Khan, “I generally recommend to parents that they bring their kids around one year old. Kids that young rarely have anything wrong, so it’s just fun all around and they get accustomed to seeing a dentist!” Make time before the end of summer for a play date at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental with Dr. Khan and his crew. Digital x-rays, the option of sedation, sunglasses, movies, prizes and fun make this a favorite destination for those twice yearly checkups. Dr. Khan says, “We want your kids to go back to school with a great smile!”

Got a classic? These motorhea

Car people know:

When it comes to making a statement, it’s all about the classics. Can you imagine Ferris Bueller “borrowing” anything but a 1961 Ferrari? Or Steve McQueen car-chasing in anything but the green 1968 Bullitt Mustang? How about ZZ Top stepping out of anything but the 1933 Ford Coupe? And who can forget Vin Diesel shredding the road in his 900-hp, 1970 Dodge Charger at the end of The Fast and the Furious?

Jesse Montes gets it—he started restoring classic cars before he was old enough to drive. For the past 25 years, he and his family have found treasures in garages, scoured the globe for rare wheels, and have turned cobwebbed, forgotten metal into classic show cars. His Legendary Classic Cars complex in Brookshire looks like a Prohibition-era hotrod shop, where bootleggers souped-up regular cars into getaway cars. The cars range from a 1929 Model T (restored to glory by Montes’s dad), a 1932 Packard (owned by the former mayor of Fulshear) seen in Hollywood movies, a rare 1941 Willys that looks like it’s on fire—and even cars for celebs like former Astro Lance Berkman. From body work, suspensions and transmissions, to paint and interiors, the family crew at Legendary handles it all with the care of surgeon-archaeologists. Montes tells us how he gets Legendary results in making the old new again:

Today, it’s all about restomodding—and we’ll get you on the road: Restomod is restoring a classic and adding newer parts to make it the perfect daily driver. (Jay Leno really made it popular.) We mod your engine or transmission – or anything you need – to make your car look like the classic, but perform like a new vehicle. Forget paint—the most important thing to slap on your baby is powder. That’s how we make sure your baby lives forever: Anybody can find old parts to mod your classic. We take every piece of your classic, strip it down, and powdercoat it in our special rotisserie powdercoating room. That means every piece of your car will last forever—no rust, no worries. That’s why we can offer a lifetime guarantee: Think of it as permanently sealing your classic. Want fast? Compare their three years/$140,000 to our six months, $50,000 job: We took a ’67 Ford GT350 clone Shelby Fastback, and in six months, we stripped it down, and redid the body work, paint, suspension and interior. That job at the popular shop Mustangs 2 Fear takes three years, and costs $140,000. We took six months, and the total cost came in under $50,000. I don’t know anyone who’s done that kind of work that fast—with a lifetime warranty.

RESTORATION RESCUE!

All Bo Beil (standing) wanted was to hit the road in his prized ’54 Chevy pickup, with his Siberian Husky, Iceberg Jody, riding shotgun. But Bo all but gave up when a Richmond-area restoration shop charged him thousands of dollars, while keeping his car for nearly two years. That’s when Legendary Classic Cars stepped in. Jesse and his team restored Bo’s pickup in just two months. Now that the nightmare is over, the only thing going to the dogs is Bo’s back road runs in Fulshear—starring Bo and Iceberg Jody, and Legendary’s Trent Jordan, and his Australian Shepherd, Jack.

What’s the hottest trending classic? We know what people want: Right now, everyone wants the Ford Mustang Fastback—especially since Carroll Shelby died. We know where to find them, and how to make them street-ready. Classic Camaros and Chargers are really hot too. And we’re always restoring classic Ford pickups. Stuck in park? We’ll take over your current restoration: About 60 percent of my calls are people who have vehicles at other shops that just aren’t getting worked on. These people have sunk a lot of money into their car, but nothing’s happening. I’ll examine the car, give you a fair estimate, and take it over and complete it—usually in less time than it’s been sitting. The best part: You don’t pay until you see progress. We’re flat-fee: We don’t do hourly charges, and we don’t charge upfront. Haven’t found your dream car yet? We’ll find it and restore it: We’re a one-stop shop: My brother “Boo Boo” and I scour the whole world looking for Porsches, Ferraris, Mercedes, and anything here at home. We’ll acquire that classic and restore it. All you have to do is drive. Forget the stock market, invest in classic cars: You do this as long as I have, you hear some crazy stories about family cars in garages netting millions. That’s because classics only increase in value. I’m a car guy, so I love seeing people’s dreams come true when we unveil their baby and they drive it away. But I also love hearing how happy they are with the investment. I don’t want to get into trouble, but let’s just say I’ve made a lot of folks a lot of money!

with Great Values!

ennifer Kettenring has three boys, Hayden, Hudson and Holden...and all three are patients of Dr. David S. Bright at Bright Orthodontics. “Dr. Bright is just the kind of guy I want my boys to be around,” says Jennifer. “We like his office, we like him, and we like his values.” “My oldest, Hayden, just got his braces off last week. He looks great. Hayden’s an avid athlete—involved in football, basketball and baseball—but he’s always been negative about using mouthguards. We had to laugh because now he’s adamant about using them...he really wants to protect his beautiful, new smile! It’s so thrilling to see him so excited about his teeth...and we have Dr. Bright to thank for that!” “Hudson has been an interesting case,” continues Jennifer. “He is now in braces for the second time. The first time, he didn’t take care of his teeth at all. I had trouble getting him to brush, and I was worried that I was wasting my money. I thought he was just too immature at the time...and I voiced my concerns to Dr. Bright. He listened and we took off the braces to wait until Hudson was ready. I really like that about Dr. Bright...he works with you to make educated decisions that are best for you and your child. I’ll be honest, I was a little freaked out when we put the braces back on, but this time around Hudson is taking excellent care of his teeth!” “And my youngest, Holden...he’s not had braces yet, but was

hit in the mouth by a baseball, losing some teeth. I trust Dr. Bright so much that I took him to his office immediately to see what we needed to do. It’s another thing I love about Bright Orthodontics...you walk in the door and they know who you are. Everyone there is so knowledgable about teeth and they work great with kids. We got Holden’s teeth back in place...and he will be getting his braces in the fall.” “I’ve recommended Dr. Bright numerous times,” says Jennifer. “He does great orthodontic work, and he’s just a great guy. Each time we are in his office, we see a new way in which he is giving back. Sometimes it’s collecting for the troops, other times it’s for kids in need. I love that my kids are exposed to that and we can participate in helping Dr. Bright with different causes. He’s an extremely caring man and it really shines through his work...just an all-around great example for my three young men!” With offices in both Katy and Fulshear, it’s easy for your family to also enjoy wonderful, caring orthodontic care like the Kettenring boys. These Hometown Boys Can Halt Your

Pain

Mr. Wayne Beum’s story by Amy Sharp

DR.

Sebastian Villarreal, MD and Stephen Hayes are the kind of people that make Katy feel like a small town. Dr. Villarreal grew up here...he played football for Katy High and still helps out with the team. Stephen’s been here more than 20 years and has a long history of involvement in the community...including Assistant Fire Chief with the West I-10 VFD. The two are friends, they’re neighbors, and they’re business associates at Katy Pain Specialists—the clinic dedicated to improving life for those suffering in pain. Wayne Beum was taking more than 400 pills/month for his knee pain. “Even with the meds, I could only walk short distances...and I always had a grimace on my face,” says Wayne. “Every place I went, I would calculate how many steps—ask myself if I really needed to go—and usually the decision was ‘No.’ I had isolated myself from my family, and I was down in the dumps, beat up both physically and mentally. But still, I was scared to go see Dr. Villarreal. I was dependent on the meds—they were my security blanket—but I also knew he had to take them away.” The meds did go and Dr. Villarreal’s first step was to prescribe Wayne morphine—up to 5 pills/day. “I didn’t really know the difference it had made until I was out in the middle of nowhere and my truck had a flat. I walked around the truck...and I realized I wasn’t using my cane. It was a huge difference!” Wayne continued with Dr. Villarreal’s plan and did nerve blocking on both knees. Much of the

pain was gone and Wayne was down to one or two morphine’s a day. Then Dr. Villarreal recommended cooled radio-frequency ablation—a non-invasive, outpatient treatment that uses cooled radiofrequency energy to target the sensory nerves. Dr. Villarreal is the first doctor to bring this procedure to Katy, and to-date, he’s had a 100% success rate. Wayne is no exception...he tearfully tells about his life post-procedure. “I no longer use a cane. I can climb stairs, I can sit on my knees. I just went to the theater with my grandkids for the first time in years. I’m not doing cartwheels yet...but wow, my life is changed. The grimace is gone and the smile is back!” “I thank God for Dr. Villarreal and I know my whole family is praising him,” continues Wayne. “If you are in pain, I really recommend you step away from the meds and go for it with Dr. Villarreal. We are planning to do the radio-frequency ablation on my back—the last place I have pain. Maybe after that I’ll be doing those cartwheels!” Dr. Villarreal says, “The mission Stephen and I laid out for Katy Pain is to create individualized treatment plans that will make our patients independent and happy again. I love that we could do that for Wayne, and we are excited to help the rest of our hometown!” Katy Pain Specialists 281-665-8552 24608 Kingsland Blvd, Katy, TX 77494 www.katypain.com

Fun, Gifts and

L

ooking for unique gifts? Or how about a new and fun gathering spot for the girlfriends? We’ve found the perfect place. Red Potato Market! This ever-changing vignette of both vintage and new handcrafted pieces by local artisans is located in the quaint community of Simonton...mere minutes from the Katy/Fulshear area. Owned by Laurie Cuthbertson and Debra Sabrsula, Red Potato Market operates in an old house...and you’ll find treasures in every room—from the shabby chic, farmhouse, and kitchen rooms to the kids, spa and ‘green’ rooms. Debra says, “Every room has a unique personality, and we like to keep them fresh. You can find fabulous chalk paint in shabby chic, interesting antiques in the farmhouse, draperies and soothing candles in the spa room, unique and personalizable gifts in the kid’s room, upscale items in the green room. We support local as much as we can, and we are always on the lookout for different and interesting items.” Debra grew up in Simonton and Laurie hails from Inez, TX, near Victoria. Both ladies enjoyed successful careers in corporate America...but the small town life called them back. The two met at a church retreat and discovered their shared love of unique home design, old homes and dreams of starting a store. And the vision caught fire from there. “It’s amazing how God opened doors for us,” says Laurie, “Debra and I just click. The store opened eight months after we started talking.” “My mom jokes that she never thought I would find anyone that works as hard as I do...but I have! It’s been a true labor of love!” exclaims Debra. “People came out of the woodwork to help us...friends and neighbors helped clean the grounds, and the City of Simonton has been just wonderful. The mayor drops in from time to time just to say ‘Hi!’” But why ‘Red Potato?’ “Red potatoes grew here back in the late 1800s, early 1900s... when Simonton was considered the Red Potato Capital of the nation,” says Laurie. “And Debra’s roots are red potato, her great-grandfather managed a potato plantation right here in Simonton...so the name was perfect!”

“In addition to our treasures, we offer workshops,” says Debra. “Stitching, painting, woodworking, jewelry...you name it! I hate to call it ‘class’...because it’s relaxed, comfortable and fun. It warms our hearts that people are always connecting at our events...making new friends. If you have a group, we can tailor an affair for you. We recently hosted a ‘girlfriends gifts’ party for a group of ladies—we did a talk, and then shopped through each room where we had displays of cool, unique girlfriend gifts! Your party can be structured however you like… painting and shopping, jewelry-making and lunch...the possibilities are endless!” Check out the website for upcoming events and workshops...and get ready for a ton of fun! The Social Voice of Fulshear

T

by Amy Sharp

wenty-five years ago a group of Christian men began meeting for prayer, study and fellowship. Many good books were shared, but the works of Dr. Paul Brand– a missionary doctor in India–inspired the men to make a difference in our world. That difference began in Peru in a garbage-dump town. Through their Future Seekers program, the men provide tuition, uniforms, a daily hot meal, and tutoring for about 100 street kids who otherwise would not be in school. Fifteen years strong. they now have graduates in universities and working to help their families escape poverty. Out of this group, in 2013 Fulshear Outreach & Development (FOD) was born. Volunteer Bob Patton says, “While we continue to support our Peruvian programs, we realized there was a need close to our homes. If we could find success in a third world country, we certainly thought we could do the same right here! Our mission is to work directly and partner with other organizations to bring hope and justice to the indigent poor of our community.” FOD is currently rebuilding a house for a local woman. “Her situation was desperate,” says Dr. Dale Olson, pastor of New Creation Lutheran Church, an FOD partner organization. “With no insulation and holes in the walls and roof, the ceiling was sagging so low I couldn’t even stand straight. The only water to the house went to the bathtub...where all water was drawn– you carried a bucket to the toilet to flush, and water for washing dishes was heated on the hot plate...the only cooking appliance. She lived there with her daughter and grandchildren. Can you imagine how difficult life is for this family?” “Our undertaking,” continues Dr. Olson, “is to build up the family, lift them out of their circumstances. We want kids to stay in school, get jobs. And we know it takes more than building houses. Through Family Hope–our FOD food bank–we feed our hungry families. We are launching an after-school tutoring program. The only way to break the cycle is to make education accessible...but that is difficult when you have difficult living conditions and you’re hungry. We start with shelter and food, and we continue through education.” “The system works,” explains Bob. “A Peru graduate, Nicole, lived in one room with

her mom and siblings when she started our program. Today she is training to be a flight attendant at university...and will be able to help her family out of poverty. We can do the same in Fulshear...we really feel the poverty is manageable here!” FOD is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with only one paid employee, the Family Hope Director. The rest are volunteers. Funded by donations and fundraising, almost 100% of your dollars go to those that need it. How can you help? Dr. Olson says “You can partner with us to hand out food and tutor students. If you’re part of an organization looking for volunteer opportunities or have a young adult wanting service hours, give us a call!” Donations are always welcome (and tax deductible.) A Vocal & Organized Advocate by Amy Sharp

for our Business Community

Randy Stacy, owner of Texas Insurance Agency-Fulshear, was part of the small group of business owners that founded the Fulshear Area Chamber of Commerce. “Back in 2012,” says Randy, “a number of our area businesses—including my own—were members of the Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance in Rosenberg. Taking part in that group...we really saw the benefits of being involved. At the same time, we felt a bit far removed from Rosenberg. We began brainstorming—what if we could create our own chamber...right here in the Fulshear area? We talked to Cheryl Stalinsky, our City Economic Development Director and she really encouraged us. We got the ball rolling and put together a plan of action… Don McCoy and our Chamber was launched in December 2013.” FACC Executive Director Randy is the first elected Board of Directors President of the Fulshear Area Chamber of Commerce—the vocal and organized advocate for the Fulshear area business community. “Our challenge is to keep things fresh,” says Randy. “We want to be different...and we want to continue to mature and grow as we move forward. We strive to keep a spotlight on our businesses and to be an entity that is educationally beneficial to its members...from emails to networking breakfasts to bringing in business leaders and politicians for speaking events, our goal is to help Randy and Kim Stacy our members realize their visions and achieve their goals. And we’ll always have the fun – owners of Texas stuff too! The galas and festivals and parades...they are going to get bigger and better. Insurance Agency At this year’s Broken Boot Casino Night, we will be raffling off a brand new 2015 Ford Mustang (only 300 tickets available, get yours soon!)” Today the Fulshear Area Chamber has 250 members, and like the Fulshear area itself, it’s continuously growing. reaming of updating your home? Everything you envision, from start to finish, Teri Gilberg (aka ‘The Re-Modelista’) can make it happen! We asked her to tell us about the recent kitchen and breakfast room transformation completed for a local family in Sugar Creek. To quote Teri, “This particular client envisioned a more tranquil finish to the rooms in a country french design, using durable but easy to upkeep materials and wanted to bring in more light by expanding the outside views. Home remodeling is like a puzzle and I really enjoy making the configurations work. You tell me what you want, and I piece it together, coordinating everything while helping you make moneysaving decisions.” “Guiding the client through the process, we first selected a soothing wall color, Sherwin Williams ‘Comfort Gray,’ to establish the muted background for the rest of the design. For the kitchen and small desk countertops, rather than granite, we chose Silestone Quartz in a neutral ‘bamboo’ color. Being non-porous and highly resistant to stains and scratches, this met our durability and easy-to-

clean requirements.” For the floors, the homeowners preferred wood. Teri says, “Wood is beautiful, but in applications around sinks and dishwashers, it’s not the most practical choice for durability. Instead we chose Cambridge Oak porcelain tile from Marrazzi. Honestly, it requires a second look, probably even a touch, to be positive it’s not wood. The beauty of wood with the benefits of durable porcelain! For the backsplash, we picked a multi-hued glass mosaic tile to tie it all together. The glass provided a subtle sheen with its varying tones, which complemented the wall color, flooring and counters.” “We decided on stainless for the appliances and my client made the selections from locally-owned Sara Appliance. Remember the request for enhanced views? We removed both the kitchen garden window over the sink and the breakfast room divided-grid, triple, french doors. These were replaced with energy efficient ‘full light’ custom doors and a single fixed-pane picture window over the sink and voila’--beautiful, unobstructed views. The look was completed by faux painting the cabinets, adding custom crown molding, and recessed LED lighting.” Do you have a remodeling design puzzle that needs solving? Whatever your ideas, let Teri turn your dreams into reality!

Making Your Move Easy...It’s the Paula Way!

ith a daughter in college and son in high school, Jen Bryson was ready to downsize her family home. “We didn’t really know who to call,” says Jen. “So we got a few referrals. After talking to three or four real estate professionals, we met Paula Rucky. Paula’s expertise about buying and selling real estate here in Katy was extremely evident in our interview!” Realtor Paula Rucky has been in business since 1984, and she’s spent the last 25 years watching and helping the Katy area grow and evolve. “To get our current home ready for the market,” says Jen, “Paula knew exactly what needed to be fixed and recommended a stager. We trusted Paula and followed her lead. We had multiple offers on the house within 24 hours of being on the market, and sold the home for above asking price...we couldn’t believe it!” For their new home, Jen wanted to stay zoned to her son’s school, Seven Lakes High School. “Paula helped us locate a house that was already being built... and it was just perfect!” says Jen. “I can’t say enough about how Paula took the stress SOLD out of this entire process. We were prepared to move and rent if needed...and Paula had

that all lined up for us. We were glad we didn’t need it...Paula negotiated a leaseback on our home until the new home was ready. Paula is professional and extremely focused... and her priority is taking care of her clients. She makes what can be a very difficult process easy!” Today, the Bryson family is enjoying their new home. But when they do need help, they call Paula! “Her list of recommended businesses is top-notch,” says Jen. “She knows landscapers, pool companies, handymen...you name it. When they’re on Paula’s list, they’ve earned the spot! We have friends call all the time asking…‘Who does Paula recommend?’” Paula says, “I love that I could help Jen find the perfect home...and even more that I could make the process easy for her and her family. That’s the goal of mother-of-two Dr. Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS at Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry. “I really like working with young children,” says Dr. Shilpa, “It is so much fun to interact with them at this age...and I want to ease their fear, so they are comfortable asking me questions about brushing and taking care of their teeth.” The ADA recommends that children start seeing the dentist when they have eight baby teeth...for most kids, that’s before the age of one. Dr. Shilpa says, “We don’t do a whole lot in those early years...it’s really all about establishing a positive relationship with your child and evaluating your child’s dental health. And we’re laying the groundwork for a lifetime of healthy teeth and smiles!” An honors graduate of Columbia University in New York, Dr. Shilpa’s passion for children is evident in all that she does.
