ormer Houston Astro, Kevin Bass was an all-star outfielder who could do it all – hit, run and field. But 14 years in the big leagues took a toll on his body, and he realized it was time to do something about his aching shoulder. Bass chose Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Sugar Land to see Mark Maffet, M.D., board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert. Maffet realized immediately that Bass would need surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff on his non-throwing shoulder. “Dr. Maffet told me that when he got inside my shoulder, it was pretty mangled,” says Bass. “Just the result of wear and tear from my playing days.” “My experience was awesome, and I now have a great appreciation for how skilled Dr. Maffet is,” says Bass. “Everyone at the hospital was A+, and I was made to feel very comfortable throughout the Kevin Bass, process. I highly recommend Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and Dr. Maffet.” Former Houston Astro As a former professional athlete, Bass knew he could trust Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine with his care. After all, Houston Methodist Hospital is the official health care provider for the Houston Astros as well as the Houston Texans, Houston Dynamo, Rodeo Houston, Houston Dash, and Houston Ballet. But you don’t have to be a Major Leaguer to benefit from the skill and expertise available at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land and Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine have long been leaders in helping patients from Fort Bend and surrounding areas recover from sports-related and other orthopedic injuries or conditions. The practice includes 13 experienced, board-certified physicians, along with specially trained physical therapy staff who work hand-in-hand with the doctors to develop and implement personalized rehabilitation plans. The center’s orthopedic surgeons are supported by a highly skilled operating room staff, including registered nurses and surgical technicians. And now, Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has a new home – a recently opened stateof-the-art facility on the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus at the corner of Highway 59 and Sweetwater Boulevard. The 75,000-square-foot center includes office and patient care space for Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine’s board-certified and fellowshiptrained physicians and surgeons, along with dedicated areas for physical and occupational therapy, which include an indoor batting cage and golf net; an indoor pool with built-in treadmill for aquatic therapy; an antigravity treadmill; and an outdoor, 40 x 20-yard turf training field for athletes recovering from injury. “With our new facility, we’ve brought together all of our resources in a comfortable, convenient setting that provides a wealth of

benefits to our patients,” says Maffet. “This building is a definite home run.” On-site physical, occupational and aquatic therapy plays a major role in helping both athletes and non-athletes recover from injuries or surgery. Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine staff includes some of the region’s most accomplished and respected therapists. In fact, Bass credits his board-certified and fellowship-trained physical therapist at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Ben Renfrow, with helping him recover quickly after surgery and regain the full use of his shoulder. “I can’t say enough about Ben,” says Bass. “He was so intuitive and extremely caring. He answered every question I had, and it was clear he really understood my injury and how to help me recover properly. I’m happy to say that I’m back to full strength!” In addition to extensive therapy capabilities, the new on-campus facility gives patients easy access to all of the hospital’s services, including state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging featuring the area’s most powerful, and comfortable, MRI machine to identify soft tissue injuries, as well as the new Revolution CT that delivers uncompromised 4D image quality, speed and enhanced clinical capabilities. “We have everything a patient needs, right here close to home,” says Maffet. “Whether the patient is a professional or former professional athlete, like Kevin, or someone who suffered an injury doing an everyday activity, we can provide the best possible diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Sugar Land.”

“Dr. Humble changed our lives.” Carrie Korenek’s Story

by Amy Sharp

T

hat’s what Carrie Korenek told us about Board-certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Eric Humble, Founder and Owner of Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery. “The first time I saw Dr. Humble,” says Carrie, “I was referred by two highlyregarded Houston area ENT specialists. I was having severe headaches, and I had once broken my nose. My nose was literally sitting sideways, and I had a huge growth that had started as the break healed...and that growth was attached to everything in or near the inside of my nose, causing the headaches. The ENTs thought a rhinoplasty was in order and recommended Dr. Humble for the job. After my surgery, I couldn’t believe it...I could breath so well and the headaches were gone!” And it wouldn’t be Carrie’s last trip to see Dr. Humble. “I had an emergency hysterectomy,” says Carrie, “and after I was put back together, I was an absolute mess. My back hurt constantly. I had about a two and half inch gap in my stomach muscle walls, and without the support of my stomach, my back was suffering. Remembering Dr. Humble’s amazing work on

my nose, I decided to talk to him...see if he could help me. We did a tummy tuck, and I can’t even put into words how much better I feel!” “Dr. Humble is so amazing,” continues Carrie. “Both he and his staff care so much about you... and want you to be the best you can be. We went back a third time with my husband Paul. He suffered from severe sleep apnea...he hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in years. Dr. Humble performed a rhinoplasty on him, creating a huge airway that he’d never had before. He jokes that he could now slide a knife all the way up his nose! But more importantly, he’s getting sleep!” Carrie travelled for years as an interior designer, and is now home on their 4000 acre farm in El Maton, TX. “I still take on some design projects,” says Carrie, “but I love being here with Paul. We are just so grateful for the quality of life Dr. Humble has given back to us--a life without headaches and back pain and a life with sleep--and we want to cherish every minute. We joke with our daughter that when we are older we will have to go back to Dr. Humble for facelifts. I don’t know if that will happen, but I do know that if I ever see another plastic surgeon, it will definitely be Dr. Humble!”

A Really Good Question as a physician who stays on top of current developments and innovative procedures...but his personal pleasure comes from getting to know his patients and treating them with the timeliness and care they deserve. It’s no wonder that Dr. Baltazar has been named “Most Supporting Physician” and awarded the “Patient’s Choice” award. In taking the time to listen and hear each patient’s concerns, Dr. Baltazar is able to understand more than just what he reads in the chart. He learns what is really important to each individual...so he can ask them a really good question.

orn in Elgin, Texas and raised in Brazoria, George Burke has been married to his wife, Jackie, for 52 years. They have three children and eight grandchildren. George had been experiencing some swelling and discoloration in his lower legs when his family physician, Dr. Harvey Resnick of Lake Jackson, referred him to Dr. Baltazar. Dr. Baltazar is certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery. After reviewing George’s records and a thorough examination, Dr. Baltazar asked him this question, “Do you want to see your grandchildren grow up?” That question really got George’s attention. George said, “My legs looked grotesque but I didn’t feel that bad. Dr. Baltazar took the time to explain my condition and to help me understand how I could improve my health and quality of life...and be around to see my grandchildren grow up.”

From the beginning Dr. Baltazar told him, “I am going to work to get you better, but I expect you to work too.” Besides recommending surgery, Dr. Baltazar suggested George lose some weight to improve his overall health. George was grateful for the advice and the warning. He has recovered from his surgery and has lost thirty pounds so far. On a follow-up visit George was surprised by the response he got from Dr. Baltazar and his staff. He says he thinks they were more excited than his family is about his weight loss. Dr. Baltazar has been diagnosing and treating venous diseases for over ten years. He has extensive experience placing guide wires, using lasers, ultrasound and the latest technology, including performing the first case of Mechano-Chemical Ablation (MOCA) in Texas. Professionally, Dr. Baltazar enjoys the recognition of his peers

Doing It Right

The First Time

hen something goes wrong with your plumbing, you might be able to pay somebody to come fix the problem, but you can’t pay somebody to care. A plumber who cares isn’t going to just patch over the leak. He’s going to trace it back to its source. He’s going to find the most cost-effective solutions to protect your biggest investment...your home. And then he’s going to apply those solutions right the first time. No temporary fixes, no risky slap n’ paste jobs. Just the kind of long-term, reliable problem-solving that comes from experience...and caring. Alan Burkhalter, the master plumber and owner of Alan’s Plumbing, his charming wife Jennifer (who womans the phones), Alan’s sons Luke and Beau, and his brother, Chris Burkhalter, are all long-time Sugar Land residents who are deeply invested in this com-

munity we share. Completing the dynamic team is Jaime--a dependable plumbing supply guy and a great help-and Brian, an apprentice with Alan’s crew. When there’s a water-related problem at your house, they are the ones you call when you want the job done right, economically, on time, and with the attention to detail that has become the signature of Alan’s Plumbing. But their scope goes far beyond your everyday leaky faucet. Alan says, “We are certified and fully licensed to do plumbing inspections, detect leaks, waterlines, gas lines, sewer lines, and garbage disposals,. We are also fully equipped and trained to install water heaters. “Wonderful, clean, respectful and professional” are words the Alan’s Plumbing crew hear all the time about their quality of service. They

are the go-to guys whether you have an emergency situation, a DYI project gone wrong, a plumbing problem, or a remodel that requires professional intervention like this customer. “I was having new flooring put in, and the installers gleefully pulled up toilets and unhooked the gas dryer to get their job done. But when it came time to reseat the toilets and reattach the gas dryer, everyone was left scratching their head. Alan’s Plumbing to the rescue!” Who knew that when the cavalry arrived, they would be brandishing wrenches and not swords? Call Alan’s Plumbing and see for yourself what great service is all about! Summer is the best time of the year, but you won’t be able to enjoy it if you don’t steer clear of poison ivy. With increased outdoor activity, your risk for developing poison ivy increases. “If this happens to you and you’re so sensitive that you begin to break out in a rash and start to swell, you need to go to the emergency room as soon as possible,” says Dr. Shannon Orsak, founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms. ur pool is more than 33 years old,” says Shirley Morris of Katy, “and we had a crack. My husband John and I knew the problem was urgent...we couldn’t afford the potential damage the leakage could cause to our house foundation. We also wanted to upgrade the look of our old pool...new travertine coping, new tile and plaster. We just needed to find the right company for the job.” Having read about Bratton Pools in a local publication, Shirley asked the folks at her local pool supply store about Bratton’s reputation. “No one had a bad thing to say,” says Shirley, “So we gave them a call. Mike Bratton came out and looked at our pool.” Mike says, “The Morris’ had a crack because their bond beam needed repair. The beam is a horizontal layer of concrete used to increase wall strength. It lives under your pool coping, and its function is preventing wall cracks and maintaining the integrity of your pool. The Morris’ were right to be concerned!” ”We picked out our new coping, tile, and plaster,” continues Shirley, “and Mike gave us an estimate for the job, including fixing the beam. The estimate was fair...comparable to others we had received. But what really separated Mike from the rest was his ability to explain the beam repair to us. He addressed our concerns,

explained to us exactly what was happening, and provided us a detailed action plan on how it would be fixed. We felt very comfortable going forward with the work after talking to Mike!” True to Bratton Pools standards, the detailed action plan was executed just as Mike described. “The work was excellent,” says Shirley. “And Mike’s team is very impressive. Everyone was wonderful and professional...so nice and polite, and they kept the work area clean. Plus--even with all the rain--the work was done in under two weeks. That beam was worrisome for us...that they could get it fixed so quickly was such a relief. And the new upgrades to the pool are just beautiful!” A family owned and operated business, Bratton Pools maintains an A+ rating with the BBB. They don’t just repair pools...they can create your dream backyard! New pool construction, renovation and repairs are all in their repertoire of services...as well as full outdoor space planning and construction. Home remodeling is like a puzzle and I really enjoy making the configurations work. You tell me what you want, and I piece it together, coordinating everything while helping you make moneysaving decisions.” “Guiding the client through the process, we first selected a soothing wall color, Sherwin Williams ‘Comfort Gray,’ to establish the muted background for the rest of the design. For the kitchen and small desk countertops, rather than granite, we chose Silestone Quartz in a neutral ‘bamboo’ color. Being non-porous and highly resistant to stains and scratches, this met our durability and easy-to-

clean requirements.” For the floors, the homeowners preferred wood. Teri says, “Wood is beautiful, but in applications around sinks and dishwashers, it’s not the most practical choice for durability. Instead we chose Cambridge Oak porcelain tile from Marrazzi. Honestly, it requires a second look, probably even a touch, to be positive it’s not wood. The beauty of wood with the benefits of durable porcelain! For the backsplash, we picked a multi-hued glass mosaic tile to tie it all together. The glass provided a subtle sheen with its varying tones, which complemented the wall color, flooring and counters.” “We decided on stainless for the appliances and my client made the selections from locally-owned Sara Appliance. Remember the request for enhanced views? We removed both the kitchen garden window over the sink and the breakfast room divided-grid, triple, french doors. These were replaced with energy efficient ‘full light’ custom doors and a single fixed-pane picture window over the sink and voila’--beautiful, unobstructed views. The look was completed by faux painting the cabinets, adding custom crown molding, and recessed LED lighting.” Do you have a remodeling design puzzle that needs solving? Whatever your ideas, let Teri turn your dreams into reality!

Building Fences

D

r. Michael Abdelsayed’s picket fence was falling apart around his Sugar Creek property. “I had a typical pine fence,” says Dr. Abdelsayed. “It was worn, weathered, falling apart, and had nails exposed...an ‘eye sore’ that was dangerous to my children. The fence sat between our yard and our neighbor’s yard, with a tree growing next to it. As the tree grew, the fence warped and broke...it really needed to be replaced.” “A friend of mine suggested that I call Russell, the owner at Grade A Fence Company,” continues Dr. Abdelsayed. “I contacted Russell, and explained to him exactly what I was looking for...I wanted a horizontally aligned cedar fence. This isn’t a typical fence with vertical pickets..it’s nicer and it’s heavier wood, with more of a clean, modern look.” Knowing it was a fence that not all companies would be willing to build, Dr. Abdelsayed sent Russell a few pictures of what he was interested in. “Russell explained what he could do, and told me that he could have the fence installed in a couple of days. I signed the contract and the work was done exactly as described...and it looks fantastic!” Russell and his business partner at Grade A Fence have been in the business for over 12 years. From writing up contracts, to meeting with customers and pricing, to closing the deal, Russell has a reputation for being extremely dependable...something that Dr. Abdelsayed-who spends long days working rehabilitation medicine in both local hospitals and nursing homes, and his Sugar Land office--really appreciated. “I could text, email, or call him anytime. He would always respond...getting back to me quickly. Plus, he really knows the ins and outs of building fences. I definitely recommend Russell.” Russell says, “Call us for a free estimate today for your home or place of business and I’ll be happy to come over myself. We can assess your fencing needs and offer the best possible solution.” Grade A Fence Company • 832-757-5462 www.gradeafences.com

any of you may recognize Barbara M. Robertson from her work with Channel 2, our NBC affiliate in Houston. She was there for almost twenty years before she and her husband created Magana Media. About five years ago, Barbara met Dr. Lance Jue, DDS through his wife, Christine. Barbara is a self-described scaredy-cat when it comes to dentistry, but she liked what Christine had to say. She decided to call A Beautiful Smile and give them a try. Barbara says, “Dr. Jue immediately put me at ease. He has this innate ability to make you feel comfortable right away.” So pleased with her first visit, she continues to see Dr. Jue for her regular checkups. “I like that he keeps up with the latest technology. He is an A++ talent and he has improved my smile.” Barbara’s husband Bill was impressed with her experience and results...now he sees Dr. Jue as well! Barbara observed that when people start making improvements, one thing leads to another. Just as when one spouse inspires the other to have their smile improved...when one issue is addressed, you look at other ways to put your best face forward. A Beautiful Smile offers Medspa services with the same attention to detail and the latest technology that Dr. Jue brings to his dental practice. The Medspa, owned by Dr. Jue’s wife and office manager Christine, has a full menu of services. They offer Skinceutical facials and skin care products as well as Microdermabrasions, Derma Planing, and Laser Hair Removal. Call or visit their website for a more complete list of services, including Laser Genesis, Botox and Juvederm injectables. Comedian Phyllis Diller once said, “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” Take care of your smile at Sugar Land’s only dental spa...A Beautiful Smile--the place where you are treated fairly in an atmosphere of caring and compassion. Dr. Lance Jue leads by example. The entire team at A Beautiful Smile has the same commitment to patient care and comfort. They want you to feel welcomed and well-treated during all your services. HEAT WAVE?

It’s Hard To Stop A Trane

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT! by Olivia Cane

nfortunately, there is no denying that our part of the world is no stranger to blazing heat. And for those of us who live in tropical and subtropical climates...that means playing a daily game of defense against intense heat. If you take a stroll through your neighborhood during one of our broiling summers...you might have noticed a disturbing trend. In the middle of the work day, air conditioners are running in building after building, house after house, even when nobody’s there. “People run their air conditioners all day long to make sure their homes are cool when they get back from work in the evening,” Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat explains. “All those units running constantly means jaw-dropping energy bills and tons of wasted energy. The good news is that now we have a solution!” The first part of that solution is scheduling your energy consumption.

18 ~ UPCLOSE ~ August 2015

“You don’t have to keep your unit running all the time,” Brian explains. “Our Trane variable speed XV20i air conditioners with TruComfort technology give you the exact amount of air conditioning you need when you need it. They’re high efficiency-which automatically means lower energy bills–plus they remove humidity.” And the high-tech part? You can control everything from your computer or smartphone! Imagine coming home to an oasis of a house that’s cool and lovely but without experiencing that nagging worry of how much of your hard-earned money just flew out the window. “Air conditioning technology has truly gone space age,” says Brian. “And Trane is at the cutting edge of that. Gone are the days of listening to your air conditioner roar to life and then shut off, over and over. These units administer the right amount of air conditioning all the time. Plus, they’re

whisper-quiet and rattle-free.” Brian should know! Jackson Air and Heat is the oldest Trane Comfort Specialist in Sugar Land. They are endorsed by SugarLandNetwork.com and are recipients of the Angie’s List “Super Ser vice Award” as well as the BBB’s “Award of Excellence,” four years running. And more than eighty percent of their new customers are from existing referrals. “Technology is a great thing to help manage your home,” says Brian. “Give us a call. Trane has instant rebates or 0% financing plus a 10-year worry-free parts and labor warranty. Centerpoint also has huge instant rebates on high efficiency systems. We can make it work for you!”

hen Brigadier General Donald Wagner of the U.S. Air Force was considering purchasing some investment rental property in Sugar Land, thorough home inspections were at the top of his list. “One of the houses I was interested in was built in 1985,” says General Wagner, “so I wanted to make sure I knew exactly what I might be purchasing.” The General’s real estate agent recommended several options... and he called them all. He says, “I liked the prompt response and answer I received from John Onofrey, the owner of Top 2 Bottom Inspections. I scheduled the inspection with John and he did exactly what he said he was going to do with regard to expense and timing. He walked me through the house and showed me the areas of concern. He also wrote up an extremely thorough document... which helped me make an informed decision about the house. I was very impressed with John. He was upfront about what he could do and how much it would cost….not selfserving at all. I appreciate that!” About eight years ago, John opened BUGCO Pest Control with his longtime friend Chris Millward. “A lot of our inspection customers were requesting pest control,” says John, “and Chris had years of experience in pest control with a national company...so it was a great fit! We offer inspections and treatment for termites and other pests, rodent control and exclusion, and mosquito misting...very popular this rainy summer!” BUGCO Pest Control is committed to verifying that you have a pest problem before taking action and will always recommend the appropriate treat-

ment. General Wagner says, “I actually had a different pest control company visit the house I was planning to buy...they told me that there were no termites. But when John came for the home inspection, he found that there were termites and he showed them to me. BUGCO will certainly be my pest control company of choice going forward.” When you need a professional real estate inspection or pest control in the Houston area...one call does it all. “I was completely satisfied...the whole deal, from start to finish!” says General Wagner. Vampire Facelift Procedure. What is it? PRP is injected into the skin to stimulate new collagen production and to re-energise your cells into rejuvenating themselves. To schedule your consultation with Dr. Alford, call 832-494-7469

renda Zetka read about the Vampire Facelift Dr. Jeffery Alford was performing and her curiosity was peaked. “I had been considering a facelift,” says Brenda, “but I wasn’t comfortable with cutting on my face...and I really wasn’t interested in Botox. I did my research and this sounded like a great alternative and it wasn’t too expensive...so I called Sugar Land Wellness and Weight-loss and scheduled an appointment.” “My consult with Dr. Alford was very reassuring,” continues Brenda. “He is just a nice physician and he explained everything to me. Further convinced, we scheduled my Vampire Facelift and went for it! I was very surprised that from start to finish, the entire procedure took less than an hour and there was no pain!” Dr. Alford says, “Vampire Facelift is a great choice because like Brenda found out, there’s no cutting, no stitching and no downtime! In this procedure, we are using your own blood...spun down to obtain an oxygen-rich platelet layer. After applying a numbing gel, we inject those platelets into your face. This encourages the development of collagen, tightening the skin and giving you a younger, smoother look. When you use your own blood, there is minimal chance your body will reject it or develop an allergic reaction...making the Vampire Facelift both safe and effective.” And Brenda’s results? “I love it! My face has softened tremendously. People tell me I’ve taken 10 years off my face. I absolutely recommend this procedure to everyone I know. It’s so easy and the results are amazing!” “There is no shame in wanting to look your best,” says Dr. Alford. “I’m a firm believer in working from the outside in. If a woman feels young and beautiful, she will radiate the kind of confidence that impacts every part of her life. Getting patients like Brenda the results they want is what makes my job so enjoyable. Call and schedule an appointment. Together, we’ll find the best and most natural solutions for you.” Sugar Land Wellness and Weight-loss 832-494-7469 • 16651 SW Fwy #100 www.sugarlandwellness.net www.medi-health.com
