he late Dr. Robert Stewart was one of the founding doctors of Houston Eye Associates—now the largest ophthalmology group in the United States. While providing some of the best eye care in the country, Dr. Stewart allowed his son, Colby, to spend high school summers working as a technician and scribe in his office. “I learned so much those summers,” says Colby. “My father had a special connection with his patients by educating them, and making them feel at ease.” Today, Dr. Colby Stewart MD has followed in his father’s footsteps at Houston Eye Associates, and has blazed a trail of his own in LASIK and cataract surgery. “The advances in both cataract and LASIK surgery in the last few years are astounding,” says Dr. Stewart. “For 40 years, ophthalmologists have been using ultrasound to treat cataracts—the clouding of the natural lens of the eye that occurs with age. Today we are using the latest implant and laser technology to perform ‘refractive’ cataract surgery.” This process removes the cataract, while leaving the patient less dependent on glasses after surgery. The laser is used to break up the cataract and reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism. Every cataract that is removed will be replaced by an artificial lens or intraocular implant. “New technology” implants are now able to

reduce the need for both distance and near glasses. “We are now in a position to clear up the vision from cataracts as well as reduce the dependency on glasses, which is very exciting!” says Dr. Stewart. The surgery is performed under topical anesthesia. No shots, no stitches, no eye patch, and patients can resume their regular activities the following day. But wait. Less dependency on glasses or contacts sounds great, but what if you do not have cataracts? “There’s a reason LASIK is such a popular procedure today,” says Dr. Stewart. “It literally changes the way you see the world, in a matter of minutes. Advances in this field have been dramatic. Where we once used a blade to create a thin flap in the cornea we now use the accuracy of a laser.” LASIK successfully treats nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism with lasting results. Less than 3% of the eyes that have been treated ever need additional treatment. Not only does Dr. Stewart use the latest LASIK technology, he helped develop it. Several years ago, Dr. Stewart developed tracking and goal-adjusting software to improve patient results. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has been accepted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was one of the first surgeons in Houston to perform laser refractive cataract surgery.

hether you are a mother, daughter, sister, brother, friend, or coworker... cancer affects us all. That includes two local celebrities who have recently been impacted by this terrible disease, which led them to team with the American Cancer Society for the 6th annual “Couture for the Cause” fashion show this fall. Melissa Wilson has graciously agreed to serve as the Honorary Chair, and Michele Fisher is generously offering her talents to host the event as our emcee. Honorary Chair for this year’s event is Emmy award winning co-anchor of Fox 26 Morning News, Melissa Wilson. Melissa says, “As a medical reporter, I often see firsthand how local patients are impacted by cancer. It touches everyone...from every walk of life. And recently the disease hit home for me. Just a kindergartener, my own little boy Caleb was diagnosed with leukemia. He’s still so young...but he wants to help prevent others from suffering from cancer. It’s been a tough life lesson for us all in learning the importance of helping raise awareness and funds.” Emcee for the event is former Houston Radio personality and voice talent and actor, Michele Fisher. Michele says, “My dad and my grandmother are both cancer survivors, and one of my closest friends just passed away from the disease. Seeing my friend, who is close to my age, lose his battle to pancreatic cancer was very eye opening. I now know firsthand how ugly this disease can be. His struggle inspired me
to do all I can to help raise awareness and money for research.” The American Cancer Society and Wealth Design Group join together for the 6th Annual Couture for the Cause “A White Haute Affair” on October 17, 2015 at the home of Randy and Brenda Bartley. The evening will feature an unforgettably creative fashion show. Dress code–sizzling “white hot”–all white attire! Everyone is invited to join as a sponsor or donor. A limited number of sponsorship opportunities are still available–please call for details. And tickets sell quickly...don’t wait until the last minute and miss this fabulous event!

wenty-five percent of men suffer from varicose veins. Irving Reval and his wife Donna have been married fifty-four years, and they stick together through thick and thin. One night, as Irving was pulling up the bedsheets, he says “I felt something go wrong. I’ve had varicose veins in my right leg with several big bumps, protuberances above and beside my knee. When I put the light on, one of those bumps had gone red on top. ‘That’s it,’ I told my wife, ‘I’m calling Dr. Baltazar.’” “I’d seen him in UpClose Magazine, and my family physician recommended him, too. During my appointment, I asked Dr. Baltazar if he’d ever seen anything worse than my leg...and he said just a couple of times. In addition to the stuff above and around my knee, things were bad in my calf and my foot had gone absolutely black. Things were complicated enough that he broke it into two. The first treatment he did was from the groin to the knee with a laser. He made it very easy and put me at ease. The morning after the laser treatment I checked into Methodist Hospital and he did a three hour surgery on the lower half of my leg. When it was all over he came out and told my wife, Donna, ‘Rocky’s doing fine.’ She asked him, ‘Rocky?’ He’d found calcified blood clots all through that leg like he’d never seen before. He told Donna I was lucky and strong to have all this work done.
She calls Dr. Baltazar an angel!” “Not every doctor is a vascular surgeon with the skill to handle complicated cases...and a great personality too. Dr. Baltazar is one-of-a-kind! While he was doing the laser, we talked about our families. His oldest daughter’s going to be a senior in high school and he’s taking time off to drive her around and look at colleges. Our neighbor used to work at the hospital and she praised Dr. Baltazar up and down. During one visit, Dr. Baltazar was unwrapping my leg when he looked up at Donna and said, ‘You have the prettiest blue eyes.’ He really connects with his patients and their families.” “Sonia and Kelsey in his office are both wonderful. Any problems you have, they have answers. Once it took Donna and I over an hour to get my compression stocking on, but they told us about a silicone gel that makes it a snap. I still get teased about my ‘pretty stockings’ by the guys at the donut shop, but it’s great to be out golfing and walking Eldridge Park again.” “When I saw Dr. Baltazar at my last appointment, I asked him for “before and after” pictures. Not only did he give me those, he included one of the veins he removed... and joked that we should make it our next Christmas card. Thank goodness I got treatment. Seeing the pictures of the work he did just drives it home...the man’s a miracle worker!”

Donna Boganwright’s Story
r. Eric Humble—the board certified Plastic Surgeon at Sugar Land Face & Body Plastic Surgery— believes people can be truly rejuvenated by making their visions of themselves a reality. “When you like who you are,” says Dr. Humble, “you can enjoy life to its fullest!” Part of Donna Boganwright’s vision for herself was losing weight.“I lost 60 pounds,” says Donna. “I felt great, but when I looked in the mirror...I just saw the sagging skin. I really needed a facelift.” Donna spoke to her family doctor, who researched plastic surgeons and recommended Dr. Humble. “When I went in to Dr. Humble’s office,” continues Donna, “everyone I encountered was just great. Very sweet and available to help. I had always considered getting my eyes done... and after speaking with Dr. Humble, I decided to go ahead and do eyes and eyebrows along with the facelift. Everything went great. And I was so impressed that Dr. Humble gave me his cell phone number so that I could call him if I needed anything at all. He’s truly concerned about his patients’ happiness...he never wants you to worry!” Today, Donna has lost 30 additional pounds, and she’s loving life! “We pride ourselves on being fun grandparents,” says Donna. “We love traveling the country. We just got back from New Mexico—my husband drove the Harley out there and I
followed behind. It’s true, when you like the way you look...you feel good. And Dr. Humble is the man for the job. A friend of mine had never considered a facelift. When she found out I’d had one, her comment was, ‘I had no idea a facelift could come out looking so natural.’ Thank you Dr. Humble! You are amazing!” Dr. Humble says, “One of the things I learned in my residency is that patients that have facelifts live—on average—an extra seven years. At first this concept did not seem valid, because I did not understand the role of self confidence in one’s life. This was confirmed after I performed my first facelift. My patient found renewed love of life, began working out, and making healthy choices. That moment helped me form my philosophy of care: every patient should walk out of our office feeling confident...because confidence changes lives. I’m glad I could give this gift to Donna. May her fun and adventurous love of life continue for years to come!” At Sugar Land Face & Body you’ll find a full range of solutions...from simple but effective skin care products to injectables to facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation, and body contouring. With an in-house AAAASF certified surgical center, it’s the full gamut under one roof. Dr. Humble says, “I’m here to erase those imperfections that drive you crazy...so that you too can live life to it’s fullest!”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
Five Herniated Discs...No Surgery by Amy Sharp
D
r. Rodney Bell, the choir director at Needville High School, has seen a chiropractor for most of his life. When he moved here several years ago, he started seeing Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Land Health Center. It was chiropractic adjustment business as usual for Dr. Bell...until this summer. “I was noticing a rapid increase in lower back pain,” says Dr. Bell. “I just assumed it was because I had skipped a few adjustments. But Dr. Harris thought otherwise...something had changed and he ordered an MRI. The results were shocking...five herniated discs in my lower back. It quickly turned into the worst pain I had ever experienced in my life.” “The odds were certainly against me,” continues Dr. Bell. “Even Dr. Harris said it was one of the worst cases he had seen in 39 years of practice. But that is where I was lucky...I had Dr. Harris in my life. For many in that situation, the only recourse is drugs and back surgery. I wanted to avoid surgery. Dr. Harris told me he would give it all he had, but in exchange I had to stay really faithful to the treatment plan--a plan that included body alignments, electrical treatments, very strong decompression and laser treatments. I’ll be honest, the pain got worse before it got better...but Dr. Harris had prepared me for that. Each time you walk into Dr. Harris’ office you’re asked to mark your pain level on a scale of 0-10. On the worst day, I wrote down ‘SEVERE--14!’ But three days later, the pain started dropping rapidly. Now, I usually mark ½ or zero. It’s just remarkable!” As a choir director and teacher, Dr. Bell is very active... conducting music through use of his arms and playing the piano for hours each day. “As school starts back,” says Dr. Bell, “doctor’s orders are I can return to normal activity...and I’m a bit nervous about that. But my security blanket is knowing Dr. Harris is close by and I can go in if I need to!” “Dr. Harris is a very honest and ethical doctor,” continues Dr. Bell. “He truly wants you to be healthy. He shows you exactly what’s wrong, and explains how he’s going to treat it and why. He’s knowledgeable in both his wealth of experience and education on the latest chiropractic treatments, techniques and technology. And his office staff is fabulous. They really care about you...each and every time I’m there they go out of their way to make sure I’m comfortable.” Dr. Harris says, “What I do is not only safe care, but holistic care. My commitment is to do everything I can to help you

Next Stop...St. Michael’s!
F
Emergencies Happen. Seconds Count. Quality Matters.
reestanding ERs and Urgent Care facilities are popping up all over our community...but it’s important to remember that they’re not all created equal. If you choose an urgent care center because you’re worried about the wait at your local emergency room, you may not get the help you actually need! Many urgent care centers have limited hours and have a physician on-call, rather than on-site. All day, every day St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms offers everything you’d find in a “traditional” ER--physicians trained in emergency medicine, X-ray, Ultrasound and CT, an on-site diagnostic lab, nine exam rooms (including pediatric themed rooms, a sports room, and a Harley-Davidson room!), a treatment suite for observation, and a comfortable waiting room...without a wait! So with every other ER on the corner promising to help you in 15 minutes, why do patients choose St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms over and over again? For starters, it’s rare to wait even a few seconds for treatment at this amazing ER! As Sugar Land’s very first free-standing twenty-four hour emergency room, St. Michael’s has perfected patient care and built long-lasting relationships with the medical resources in our community. Co-founder Dr. Shannon Orsak says, “Since we’re not affiliated with one single hospital, if you need long-term treatment we can choose the best doctor and the most appropriate facility for you. We’ve got agreements with nearby hospitals to get you priority care...without the wait!” In an emergency, you have the right to choose the emergency room that will offer you the best care...and by law your insurance
must pay in-network benefits whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “out-of-network.” Choose St. Michael’s, the ER with a tradition of care and a history of service to our community. After graduating from the only emergency medicine school in Houston, Dr. Orsak worked at local hospitals including Memorial Hermann SW, St. Luke’s and West Houston Hospital where he was Assistant Medical Director. He says, “My brother, Brian and I created St. Michael’s to combine medical efficiency and patient comfort... and we named it St. Michael’s after the patron saint of emergency medicine. We believe St. Michael’s offers the very best care...the kind we want for our own family!” When seconds count, ask yourself...are you going to get better sitting around a waiting room? By law you’re entitled to concierge emergency room treatment at the same price you’d pay to sit around an impersonal ER for hours or some venture-capital-owned freestanding ER for thirty minutes. Dr. Orsak says, “St. Michael’s is one of the only fully-accredited ER facilities with JCAHO, ACR, and CLIA certifications. We are in-network with AETNA and also accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. We’re proud to have been the first free-standing ER in Sugar Land...and we’re always here for you and your family!” At this time, Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare do not participate with free-standing ER’s.

Basically...I needed a complete new system, and I wanted to get it replaced before my AC went out and I was stuck without it in the hottest summer months.” “We already had two estimates for a system when I saw a Jackson Air and Heat truck by my neighbor’s house,” continues Lisa. “So I went over and asked for a business card. Brian Jackson came to our house and discussed all of our options...from the lowest to the highest end systems available. We decided on the Trane Supreme, and he told us exactly what to expect and what would be done. He answered all of our questions and was extremely professional.” “On installation day, the technicians arrived on-time as scheduled. They laid tarps down to keep everything clean. Our unit was installed in one day, and when they left, everything was spotless...they cleaned the attic and the entire area. They even explained the digital thermostat before they left. Remodeling... It Doesn’t Have to be Overwhelming!
by Marie Page
W
hen Laurie Minard decided to remodel her kitchen, she was overwhelmed with the process, so she hired a contractor. However, Laurie would soon learn that not all contractors are created equal. “The contractor I hired was vague, and did not offer me options. Plus, I had to run around town and choose materials without guidance. The process was crazy because there were so many choices, and I was unsure where to start, much less what materials would work well with my ideas and most importantly, my budget.” The remodel process was not easy for Laurie, and she told me that she felt misinformed and worse, alone. When it came time to remodel Laurie’s master bathroom, she did some research and spoke to friends. Laurie was happily referred to Teri Gilberg, better known as the Re-Modelista. “I talked with Teri about my ideas, and together we created a plan. Teri even came with me to pick out the materials!” Laurie went on to tell me that Teri, the Re-Modelista, “is extremely knowledgeable about what can work best in different areas. She helped me make practical decisions that still fit into my overall
Before
design. Teri helped me make educated decisions and taught me the difference between onyx and marble countertops because Onyx is less likely to crack.” “Teri walked me through the entire process and was always available. We were even able to add drawers to the vanity because, as Teri taught me, drawers are more functional than cabinets.” “The bottom line is that the Re- Modelista made the entire re modeling process smooth and stress free. Teri checked in often,” continues Laurie. “And her contractor was extremely organized and always prompt. They were both great!” “I love, love my new re-modeled master bathroom,” Laurie confirms with a smile, “and I also love my newly stoned fireplace, a little add-on project that I slipped in under my husband’s radar while I still had the Re-Modelista at my house.” Laurie finished with this, “Teri is so helpful, and just makes remodeling easy. A Proven Solution to Heel Pain by Olivia Cane

nyone who suffers from heel pain knows how miserable it can be. There have even been studies showing a possible causal relationship between depression and chronic pain in this part of the body. It is a condition people frequently describe as “debilitating.” Your heel pain could be caused by a number of issues like bursitis, plantar fasciitis, flat feet, heel spurs...but there’s one place to find the right diagnosis and treatment! Dr. Vargas of Foot & Ankle Associates has made it his life’s mission not just to alleviate foot, ankle and heel pain,
but to fix the underlying causes. “The body works on a continuum,” Dr. Vargas explains. “A misalignment is caused by an inward rotation of the hindfoot, which occurs when the heel bone and the ankle bone slip out of alignment. Aside from heel pain, this misalignment can also affect other parts of the body and cause knee issues, hip issues and back issues. If the foundation is faulty, the whole body is vulnerable to ligament and tendon tears along with a host of related ailments. Medication, injections and over the counter shoe inserts usually only offer partial or temporary pain relief, because they don’t address the underlying problem...the structure and function of the foot itself.” With HyProCure, you can enjoy a real and permanent solution to faulty foot mechanics. The minimally-invasive procedure is quite simple: a small stent is placed inside a naturally-occurring space between the ankle and heel bones. End result? Your quality of life is beautifully restored to you. Dr. Vargas says, “The HyProCure is a stent placed in the foot like an ‘implantable orthotic,’ to help improve foot biomechanics or function and eliminate the need for orthotics. The procedure takes less than ten minutes, is completely reversible and has been performed on patients of all ages, from children to adults...and all activity levels including long distance runners, basketball players, ballerinas and more!” “Published studies around the world bear out the same fantastic results that my Marco A Vargas DPM, FACFAS patients are experiencing for themselves,” Foot and Ankle Associates says Dr. Vargas. “There is no need to suffer. 281-313-0090 17510 W. even days a week, politicians, professional athletes, businessmen and women, and members of the working class descend upon a tiny spot on the corner of a strip mall on Highway 6 in Sugar Land. The ceiling is covered in colorful festive pinatas and the tables are reminiscent of a diner. The place isn’t swanky, and the line of people out the door on weekends aren’t there to be seen. They’re there to enjoy some of the best Tex-Mex around at one of the Houston Chronicle’s “Top 100” Restaurants in Houston. Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant is the blood and sweat and tears of humble couple Jaime and Lupe Garcia. “Hardwork,” says Jaime. “I came to this country from Mexico. Lupe and I opened Lupita’s twelve years ago with little more than a desire to share great food with our wonderful neighbors.” And the Garcias have been successful in their endeavor. Voted Best Tex-Mex in Sugar Land, day-in, day-out the Garcia’s supply their regulars with their superior homemade food. The seafood is fresh, the meats are choice. Fan favorites include fabulously marinated fajitas, stuffed avocados, green chicken enchiladas, chile rellenos, Mercy’s nachos with fajita beef or chicken, chicken flautas and mouthwatering desserts like sopapillas and flan. Want to bring the great taste to your home or party? Jaime says, “We’ll help you out with to-go orders or catering for a family event, corporate meeting, or your big party. You send the invitations, we’ll handle the fajitas…for fiestas of any size!” Now that’s Texa-licious! And who doesn’t love to wash down their favorite Tex-Mex with their favorite margarita? The Garcia’s have you covered! Stop in Monday and Wednesday...house margaritas are just $2. Can’t beat that! Every time you stop by Lupita’s, the Garcias will gladly welcome you with open arms and find their way into your heart through both their graciousness and fantastic food. Jaime, Lupe, and their sons Rigo and Leo say, “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Fort Bend for everything. Your loyalty, support and friendship mean the world to us.”

he most recent American Housing Survey released reports of incidents of rodents in 25 major cities across the United States. John Onofrey, owner of Top 2 Bottom Inspections and BUGCO Pest Control was not at all surprised that the Houston area reported some of the highest percentages of rodents in the country. “We see evidence of both insects and rodents in a large majority of the homes we inspect,” says John. “You don’t have to see a mouse or a rat to know they’re there...they leave their evidence in droppings, attic trails and urine trails. And in our climate, we are under attack all the time. In the summer, the rodents come in looking to cool off and find some water. In the cooler months they come in looking for warmth. You’ve made your home a comfortable place for your family...and these rodents want a comfortable place to raise their babies!” But maybe you don’t want your home to be a safe haven for rodent babies! Luckily, it doesn’t have to be...BUGCO Pest Control has the solution to rodent control. “Rodent exclusion is your first line of defense,” says John. “We need to seal off all of the exterior access points...cover weep holes with wire mesh and seal points where wires are entering your home. Windows and door seals need to be checked and low hanging tree branches are convenient pathways onto your house. If vermin evidence is present, we set out bait stations to not only eliminate the rodents inside your home, but also to help in reducing the outside population.” John started the inspection business in 2003 and has been growing since day one... inspecting properties all over Fort Bend and Harris County. With the rampant pest and rodent problems in the area, a lot of customers were requesting pest control too. In 2007, John launched BUGCO

a Safe Haven for Rodents? with long-time friend Chris Millward. John says, “Chris had years of experience in pest and rodent control with a national company...so it was a great fit. We pride ourselves on delivering honest, responsible and effective service, and the kind of personal touch you only get from a homegrown company. As local guys, we know what kind of pests to expect...and how to deal with them. For both residential and commercial customers, we offer inspections and treatment for termites and other pests, mosquito misting, and rodent control and exclusion...because no one wants to inadvertently harbor rodent babies!” If just reading about the possibility of rodents in your home or business gives you eebie-jeebies, give John a call. “We always inspect and verify you actually have a pest problem before we take any action,” says John. “And we’ll always recommend the appropriate treatment. We promise to honor the trust you place in us, because integrity means everything to us!”

hen the plumber that lived down the street from Sarah Warburton moved, she turned to a big national company the next time she needed plumbing help. “I was so used to my neighbor just stopping by and fixing what needed to be fixed on his way home that I had no idea what I was in for,” says Sarah. “I felt like I was in a high pressure sales pitch and left with an inflated bill. Different guys were in and out of my house, and I had no idea what they were doing or if they were fixing anything!” Sarah had heard from several people that Alan’s Plumbing was different... more like a neighborhood plumber. Alan’s Plumbing is owned by master plumber Alan Burkhalter. His wife Jennifer handles the phones, and his team is rounded out with Alan’s sons Luke and Beau, his brother Chris, and Jaime and Brian–two apprentices with Alan’s crew.
Sarah’s first call to Alan’s was to replace all of the faucets in her home. “Jennifer answered the phone,” says Sarah. “She got me on the schedule and told me to go ahead and pick up the faucets I liked before the appointment. But when I got to Home Depot...I had no idea what I needed! I called Jennifer back, texted her some pictures from the store, and she was able to walk me through the process. She saved me from buying something that wouldn’t fit in my sink when the plumber arrived!” The plumber that visited Sarah was Alan and Jennifer’s son Beau. “He was so kind,” says Sarah. “Called me ma’am. He arrived at the quoted time and when he left everything was clean. I didn’t feel like I was being upsold and the price was fair. I also loved that it was the owner’s son...it didn’t feel like ‘just anyone’ was coming into my house. boss’s phone number!” “I called Jennifer on another occasion when my dishwasher wasn’t working,” continues Sarah. “I really had no idea if I had a plumbing issue or not when I called. Jennifer walked me through checking the dishwasher draining process, and was able to determine—over the phone— that it was not a plumbing issue and I wouldn’t need Alan’s Plumbing that day. And she also recommended a fabulous appliance repairman. I love that kind of honesty and integrity!” When you need a plumber, there’s no need to be bombarded with salesmen, upselling and inflated bills. he Junior Fashionista Board at Pennywise–the resale centers benefiting the Fort Bend Women’s Center–is a fantastic opportunity for students to earn service hours and learn fashion and retail skills. We talked to Jamay Fishbeck, model and volunteer Lead Fashionista, and two of the Junior Fashionistas, Shellcy Chatham and Alyssa Merlos, to get an upclose look at the program. “We’ve taught these fabulous young women tips on fashion, trends, accessorizing, merchandising and retail,” says Jamay. “When you feel that you look good, it creates a power in yourself. It’s an image makeover. And of course that’s the mission of the Women’s Center, to promote self-sufficiency and end abuse. When you feel that you have power over yourself, you’re less likely to let others have power over you.” Did you know you can stop by a Pennywise store and a Fashionista can help you put an outfit together? “You would be surprised what you can find!” says Jamay. “We see Max Studio, Ann Taylor, Calvin Klein, Hollister, lululemon and more. And we know it’s hard to put an outfit together. Orange, black, shades of reds and sheers will be hot this fall, and we can help you stay in style on a budget!” Fashionista Shellcy Chatham has blossomed in the program. She’s started her own initiative, “high-low fashion.” “I look at pictures of outfits in fashion magazines,” says Shellcy, “and create the thrift store version of them with items in the store.” Shellcy’s creations are right there on the mannequins and you are free to snatch them up for a fraction of retail price! Fashionista Alyssa Merlos is a model signed with Neal Hamil. She loved helping out in the store so much as a volunteer Junior Fashionista, she’s now an employee. “I love to meet new people,” says Alyssa. “And when I help our customers match and put an outfit together, it’s so exciting. Plus, knowing the profit goes to the Women’s Center is extremely rewarding!” How can you help? “Volunteer. Donate. by Olivia Cane idlife can be a little infuriating! Just as soon as you’ve got yourself halfway figured out...along comes the spare tire, diminished sex drive and all-around exhaustion. You deserve none of it. You work out and watch your calories. You’re the first one to pass on dessert. So what gives? Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy sees middleaged stress-related hormone depletion all the time. “Especially this time of year when moms and dads are trying to get their kids back in the school routine!” says Dr. Campbell. “It is entirely possible to be so exhausted that you can’t sleep. Being sleep deprived exacerbates the problem of weight gain, because your body releases more cortisol from your adrenal glands and that affects your metabolism. It can also lead to decreased muscle mass, elevated blood pressure and suppressed thyroid function.” “Drops in hormone levels are not the exclusive problem of women,” continues Dr. Campbell. “They impact men too. In men, waning testosterone can wreak havoc in their lives and is frequently an underlying cause of depression. Hormone imbalances in women make for night sweats, endometriosis and fibrocystic breast disease--and that’s in addition to the bathroom scale inching higher and higher.” But what’s the solution? “Once a hormonal imbalance is diagnosed,” says Dr. Campbell, “it can be treated with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). You can literally get your life back and feel like your old self again with energy to spare. At Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, we prepare a customized formula just for you and follow up to make sure you are getting the relief you need. That’s the beauty of compounding...we have a lot more latitude in how both
the medication is delivered to your system and its dosage...it’s truly customized medication.” Want to learn more? Schedule a one hour consultation with Dr. Campbell where he can explain the fundamentals of BHRT and how it could improve your health. Taking Teens to the Dentist

t’s happened…faster than you ever thought possible. The baby teeth are gone. Crayons and scissors are replaced with lockers and cellphones. Your BABY has become a teenager! But should your newly minted teenager still see a pediatric dentist? Dr. Bianca Sanchez at Little People’s Dentistry says, “Just because your teenager isn’t a child anymore, doesn’t mean he or she should stop seeing a pediatric dentist. Dentistry to meet the special needs of teens and adolescents is an important part of the specialized training we receive. Growing does not stop in childhood--teens experience important growth in their faces and jaws. Teens are also getting the last of their permanent teeth, and teeth that have just come through the gums are especially vulnerable to decay.” But we all know how rebellious teenagers can be...maybe they just don’t want to see the “kid dentist.” Realizing that teens may not want the zebra Zooby dental brushes, kooky glasses and helium balloons like a lot of their other patients,
Little People’s Dentistry recently expanded the back area of the office into an examination and cleaning room exclusively for teens. “We have bigger, adjustable chairs...plus TVs and Playstation Vitas,” says Dr. Sanchez. “Your teen can watch their favorite DVD, pick their favorite show on Netflix to binge watch, or play video games during their dental visit!” Plus, with on-site orthodontic care, Little People’s Dentistry can be your one-stopshop for teenage teeth. This all sounds so great, let’s sign Mom up to for a little HGTV and a routine cleaning too. “Sorry,” says Dr. Sanchez, “we only treat patients up to age 18.” But Little People’s Dentistry does have “mom perks.” All forms are easily accessible on the website, plus they offer specials through their Facebook page and newsletter. Most dental insurance plans are
accepted and CareCredit is also offered for dental and orthodontic procedures. Transforming 2015 from Bland to Grand!
t’s September and the hustle and bustle for the holidays is fast approaching. Enjoy your 2015 holidays with new decor. “Bland is not an option,” says Caron Lopez, owner of Grand Windows & Interiors. Caron’s goal for your home is “Gorgeous, yet uniquely and comfortably yours!” David and Robyn’s transformation has begun! They searched for the team who would listen to a wish, and then go beyond that wish with striking, innovative ideas, and put it into action. Robyn explains, “We had seen advertisements for Grand Windows & Interiors in several UpClose publications. After perusing Grandwindows.com, we contacted them for guidance regarding some changes we were wanting to undertake in our home.” With a smile, Robyn adds, “After twenty years it’s time for an update of colors, style, etc. The team at Grand Windows & Interiors are competent, caring professionals with the highest degree of integrity and honesty. Caron and Joni have directed the process and remained budget conscious in every decision. Taking our ideas into consideration, they tweaked the concepts and listened to our preferences, allowing the end product to become uniquely our vision. The Lopez family business has made the redecorating process fun and enjoyable. They became our friends! With all sincerity, we recommend Grand Windows & Interiors to assist you in your redecorating project.”
Only BEFORE and TRANSFORMING remodel photos are shown above. The GRAND REVEAL of the whole home will be in the next issue of UpClose and on grandwindows.com. Grand Windows & Interiors wants you to know that your project, big or small, starts from a wish and, with their help, it can take form quickly like this one. Kitchen--top cabinets now painted white, and widened to 15” for larger plates, plus cabinets now go to the ceiling with glass, accent lighting and under counter lighting. The big fluorescent light box that hung from the ceiling is gone, now giving a feel of uplifting ceilings. Stylish pendants lights now steal the show. New hues of soft blue enhance the French feel of the kitchen and living area. Baths--now stately and innovative with Silestone cabinet tops and Porcelanosa wall tile, emulating marble without the upkeep. Caron designed the “French trumeau mirror.” A waterproof shutter will go in the arched shower window. Behind bi-fold doors in the hall to the dining area, was the washroom--now it’s a new butler’s pantry, which just thrills Robyn! The washer/dryer are now stacked where the old bathroom shower was and the unused garden tub area became a large luxury shower. The contractor and craftsmen Caron selected for the wholehouse remodel worked efficiently and respected her expertise... and she respects theirs. GRAND REVEAL coming soon!

A New House AND A New Fence
ometimes the excited of moving to a new house is dampened by projects or renovations that need to be completed. Mike and Lisa Brannan moved into their house in Lake Jackson two years ago. While they loved the house, the fence was very plain and shabby...it definitely needed to be replaced. They wanted to get a beautiful new fence to proudly show off their new house, and they wanted it to be higher-end, higher-grade, red cedar. Realizing that installing a fence is harder than it looks, they decided to hire professionals. They contacted several fence companies to get estimates...but were not satisfied with what these companies had to offer. Then they came across the number for Grade A Fence Company. Mike says, “When I called Grade A Fence, Russell Rhone, the owner, took my call. Russell came over himself and gave us a bid in a timely manner...and in a couple of days our new fence was installed. Russell and his team were very professional from start to finish. They did what they said they were going to do, and we are very happy with our new fence. I would absolutely recommend Russell and Grade A Fence Company!” Russell and his business partner at Grade A Fence have been in the business for over 12 years. the greater Houston area. Russell says, “Curb appeal can add 20% to your home’s value, and quality fences can really boost that curb appeal. I’m excited we could do that for the Brannans. Like most people in our area, the Brannans chose cedar...a wise choice. Cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insect damage, it takes stains and paints beautifully, and it doesn’t shrink or warp like other woods do. We can help you choose the grade of cedar that will be cost-effective, while delivering excellent performance.” In addition to cedar, Grade A Fence provides custom ornamental iron fencing, custom driveway gates with electrical/solar operators and accessories, as well as general chain link fences. Russell says, “Whether you’re looking for privacy and curb appeal like the Brannans or just a fence to keep your dog in your yard, we’ll make you a well-crafted fence you’ll be proud to show off!” A native Texan, Russell lives in Sugar Land with his wife Michelle and three sons. eventeen, that’s how many years the Jinks family has been relying on Dr. Zahra Cook for all of their oral care needs. Of course, Christine Jinks had no idea that’s how things would turn out when she made her first appointment. Moving to the Richmond area by way of the UK and the Netherlands, Christine first heard about Dr. Cook in 1998 when she and her family moved to Pecan Grove. Harboring bad memories of her own childhood dental visits, Christine was very interested in finding a place where she and her family would feel safe and well taken care of. As it turns out, the first time is the charm! The minute she walked in the door of Dr. Zahra Cook’s office, she felt right at home. The staff was friendly and pleasant and just as Dr. Cook says, “As soon as my patients walk through the door, I feel as if they are walking into my house. They are my guest and I am going to take good care of them.” Dr. Cook has watched the Jinks’ sons Daniel, Thomas and Nathan grow up. She remembers how Jeffrey and
Christine met (at a mutual friend’s wedding.) She’s not just their dentist, she is a trusted adviser. Through a palatal expander, braces, wisdom teeth extractions and more, Dr. Cook has been there with preventative care and proactive measures. It’s a relationship that’s been earned and built on mutual respect and great results. Like the Jinks family, through the years Dr. Cook has grown as well. Never resting on her laurels, she continues to seek out the newest techniques available for all of her patients. Dr. Cook
keeps up-to-date with the latest technology in dentistry through constant continuing education. Her commitment and dedication has earned her the MAGD, FICIO, and LVIF distinctions. More than just accolades, these distinctions set Dr. Cook apart and enable her to perform many dental services that are often not available in dental offices. Dr. Cook offers orthodontics, dentures, implants, Invisalign®, pediatric dentistry, full mouth rehabilitation, TMJ treatment, wisdom teeth extractions, and advanced cosmetics. In fact, we’re the only hospital in the Fort Bend area to provide 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery services. Also, because we consistently exceed national standards in the most critical components of cardiac care, we’re a nationally accredited chest pain center. In a cardiac emergency, there’s only one place you need to be — Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. That’s the difference between practicing medicine and leading it.
