At Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, new technologies are helping physicians team up to defeat lung cancer.

P
hysicians at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital are using advanced technology and a collaborative treatment approach to give patients a fighting chance against lung cancer. Lung cancer is the most deadly cancer in the U.S., with approximately 150,000 deaths per year – more than colon, breast and prostate cancer combined, largely because most lung cancers are not diagnosed until they are at an advanced stage. “Patients with lung cancer often don’t have pain or exhibit any symptoms until the cancer has spread,” says Priya Oolut, M.D., a board certified pulmonologist with Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “But if we can identify a tumor early, we have a better chance at curing that patient with today’s leading-edge technology.” To help with early detection, physicians at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital now offer low-dose radiation computed tomography (CT) screening, which is recommended by the American Lung Association for: • Current or former smokers 50 years of age or older • Individuals who have smoked the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes a day for at least 20 years • Lung cancer survivors “The availability of low-dose radiation CT screening represents a real paradigm change,” says Oolut. “A CT scan is three times more sensitive than a chest X-ray, enabling us to see even small tumors in the periphery of the lungs. So we now have the ability to safely and accurately scan patients.”
Collaboration for a Cure Sugar Land resident Clifford Price is a living example of how technology and collaboration are coming together to successfully diagnose and treat lung cancer at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Like many people in his generation, Price smoked cigarettes as a young man. But he gave up the habit 40 years ago, and the thought of lung cancer no longer crossed his mind. Earlier this year, however, a persistent
LUNG CANCER
EVENT THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12 • 6 P.M. Join us for a lung cancer awareness event to learn more about risks, screening, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. A short discussion led by a lung cancer expert will be followed cough and unexplained weight loss led to a visit to his primary care physician, who ordered a CT scan that showed a small tumor in his lung. Price was referred to Oolut, who performed a bronchoscopy using electromagnetic navigation to obtain a biopsy of the tumor. Under electromagnetic navigation, the original CT scan is used to guide the physician to the exact location of the tumor, even those in difficult to reach areas of the lung, eliminating the need for surgical biopsies. The biopsy confirmed Price’s lung cancer, and within the next few days, he met with Charles Conlon, M.D., board certified in hematology and oncology, and Clive Shkedy, M.D., medical director of radiation oncology at Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land. That rapid response is a key component of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s patient-centric, collaborative approach to cancer care. “We understand how difficult it is when a patient receives a cancer diagnosis,” says Oolut. “It’s the scariest time of their life. So we collaborate closely to ensure that the patient can be seen as quickly as possible by oncology specialists.”
Technology Makes a Difference Following his initial consultation, Shkedy began treating Price with the Cancer Center’s new radiation system, known as TrueBeam™, an image-guided technology that gives physicians unmatched control of radiation therapy. TrueBeam uses a CT scan image
superimposed on the patient’s body to ensure a precise target for radiation. Its stereotactic radiosurgery beam utilizes motion management technology to synchronize delivery with the movement of the tumor due to the patient’s breathing. “TrueBeam is extremely accurate,” says Shkedy. “And because it is image-guided, we know we are aiming directly at the tumor, even as it moves. As a result, we are able to protect healthy tissue in and around the lungs.” Shkedy believes TrueBeam is a real benefit for patients with lung cancer – as well as other types of cancers where sophisticated, complex radiation therapy is required. TrueBeam can be used alone or in combination with chemotherapy, depending on the individual patient. “This is the most advanced technology available in Sugar Land and surrounding areas,” he says. “It is making a real difference in our ability to fight cancer and win.” In the past, radiation treatment often took up to nine weeks. Because of TrueBeam’s power and precision, however, Price underwent just five treatment sessions, lasting a few minutes each. But what impressed him more was the personal, compassionate approach of the staff at the Cancer Center. “I don’t know anything about the technology, but I know I received the best possible care,” he says. “No matter what your condition is, it’s impossible to leave the center without a smile on your face because everyone there is so kind and helpful.”

Journey
Worth Taking by Sara Adams
W
hen you have an ache or a pain...it’s difficult to know where to turn. Getting the right help at the right time can sometimes seem like you’re on a rabbit trail instead of a direct path for a solution to your problem. When Linda Miller first noticed her feet swelling and weakness in her legs, she consulted a couple of doctors without much help. One doctor even suggested she might need to get used to walking with a cane. Not one to take bad news sitting down, Linda continued her journey to wellness by seeing two more doctors. Along the way, she discovered it was the condition of the veins in her legs that was causing the swelling and weakness she was experiencing. When Linda told a friend at work about her latest discovery, her co-worker knew just who to recommend. “She told me ‘You have to see Dr. Baltazar!’” says Linda. “My friend’s friend had been seeing him for ten years and she just loved him.” At her appointment with Dr. Baltazar, Linda was comfortable the moment she met him and felt an immediate rapport. She knew she had finally arrived when Dr. Baltazar told her, “I won’t do anything if it’s not going to help you.” Linda’s confidence was
further bolstered by a side-comment she overheard while getting her ultrasound. The healthcare worker said, “If I ever have vein disease, Dr. Baltazar is the doctor I would see.” After working with Dr. Baltazar, Linda no longer has any weakness in her legs and her swelling has been reduced by 85-90%. Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Linda took that first step and kept walking until she got the care she needed and deserved. Linda says, “It was a long road that led me to Dr. Baltazar, but once I got there the office staff was as nice as they could be. When I talked with Dr. Baltazar, he listened to my symptoms and never rushed me. If he didn’t understand me, he asked questions to clarify what I was saying. And with his treatment...I don’t need a cane! Both my husband and I really like him and recommend him.” Certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery. Dr. Baltazar has been diagnosing and treating venous diseases for more than ten years. If you or someone you know is experiencing problems with venous insufficiency, take that first step and call Dr. Baltazar today.

by Amy Sharp hen three ACES: banker and realtor Nelvin Adriatico, interior designer and realtor Ella Guinhawa and real estate investor and developer Avinash Thadhani came together to create CORE Realty, they had one thing in mind: It’s all about You! “We are a boutique realty firm, dedicated to making the process of buying or selling as comfortable and stress-free as possible.” And when you do walk through their doors, you feel relaxed and at home. Edith offers you water, coffee, or even a glass wine. Then you meet the CORE team, and they want to know your story. “We know there are many realtors in Sugar Land. They put a for-sale sign in your yard, take pictures and put it online. Most times, that’s all the interaction. This is where we are different. Just like a wedding needs a planner, so does a homebuyer and a seller. If you’re buying an $80,000 or a million dollar home, you deserve the same attentive, up-close and personal treatment.” “When you’re ready to sell your home, we don’t just list it. We are your partner and
you can trust us to tell you what’s necessary to add value. We will present our ideas and create an action plan. Ella will guide you on how to show your home at its best. You may find Avi at Home Depot searching for light bulbs or see him planting flowers outside. CORE hires a professional photographer to showcase your home. It’s your masterpiece and we make sure it’s treated like one. Ahead of scheduled showings you can find Avi inside prepping, opening blinds and checking bulbs. When under contract, Nelvin will make sure the buyer’s agent is staying on top of the lender. He predicts potential delays and proactively works with the other parties to avoid them.” And when you’re buying, Nelvin will review your information and get you approved before looking at homes. With a banking background, he knows what a lender wants and how to put together a strong loan application. We know obtaining a mortgage can be stressful and sometimes tricky...but with Nelvin’s banking experience, he understands the lending process, and can be the “go-between” between you and the lender. “Everyone has an unusual situation and
often the client is stressed or over-worried. But when we hear it, we know how to address it to make it work. We’ve helped buyers with recent job changes or who have commission based incomes that did not think they could obtain a mortgage, but we listened, made it happen and then found them their home.” Rounding out the CORE “Team of Aces” are agents TJ Perez and Caroline Tran. TJ says, “What drew me to CORE is the commitment to values, honesty and integrity. There’s no cutting corners here, and we are committed to you and to building lifelong friendships and relationships. Quality over quantity.” The ACES are all long-time Sugar Land residents. “We truly believe we’ve put together a team with a wide range of expertise...so that we provide a competitive advantage while catering to you on a personal level. dam Mellen, a pharmaceutical sales representative, moved from the Woodlands to Pearland a couple of years ago. Like everyone who moves to a new area, he needed to find a new dentist. Adam says, “Finding the right dentist in the Houston area can be difficult. I didn’t know anyone in Pearland, and my girlfriend suggested I go to Dr. Lomonte in Stafford. She has a stunning smile so I thought I’d give him a try. She had worn Invisalign to straighten her teeth...something I was interested in as well. I had braces on my teeth when I was younger, but I didn’t wear my retainer and when my wisdom teeth came in...my teeth shifted. I really didn’t want braces, but I needed to straighten my teeth because in my business my smile is very important!” “Dr. Lomonte and his staff are super friendly,” continues Adam. “It is really easy to schedule appointments and they always squeeze me in. I don’t think I’ve ever waited more than three minutes in the waiting room. I’ve finished Invisalign treatment with him. Invisalign straightened my teeth and was virtually invisible...not noticeable at all like regular braces. Today I have permanent retainers that are not visible in place. My teeth look the best they’ve ever looked and I get tons of compliments on my smile.” Native Texan Dr. Thomas Lomonte has been practicing dentistry at that same location in Stafford since 1982. “My 6 ~ UPCLOSE ~ October 2015 www.upclosemagazine.com

have called Alan’s Plumbing for my household plumbing repairs for 15 or 20 years,” says long-time Sugar Land resident Eileen. “My four grown children all live in Fort Bend County and they use Alan’s as well. What really stands out is that you can totally trust Alan, from his assessment and labor to his sons who work for him.” Alan’s Plumbing is owned by master plumber Alan Burkhalter. His wife Jennifer answers the phones, and his crew includes sons Luke and Beau, Alan’s brother Chris, and plumbing apprentice Jaime. Eileen really appreciates that Alan’s Plumbing is a family business. “They are honest about being family...and they truly act like family! Alan’s mother Lena even answers the telephone once a week when Jennifer is doing the bookkeeping. Both Jennifer and Lena find answers for me each and every time I call them...and when one of
the guys is on the way, they call to let me know. Alan, Luke, Beau, and Chris have all been out to my house. They are all very respectful...nothing but positive words come out of their mouths. Alan’s plumbing has installed faucets, toilets, and sinks for me. They have done entire renovations for my children—tubs, showers, sinks, and faucets. We all use them exclusively, and have never had a complaint. They are always determined to fix the problem— whatever it may be—and they never leave anything unfinished. We recently had a clogged drain from an air conditioner and they went up into the attic to fix it in the horrible summer heat. We were so impressed with their determination to get the job done!” “We all talk personally...Jennifer, Lena, Alan, the boys...everyone,” says Eileen. “Not only are they respectful to me, but they are respectful to each other. They
are the kind of people you want in your house. Plus they are extremely clean and they really take their time...very thorough. When they are done with the job, Jennifer always wants to know what they did, how they did it, and if you’re pleased with their work. She is truly the heart of the company. As you can tell...I’m sold on them!” In addition to household plumbing repairs, renovations and upgrades, Alan’s Plumbing is certified and fully licensed to do plumbing inspections, detect leaks, waterlines, gas lines, sewer lines, and garbage disposals. When you need a plumber, you have the latitude to demand respect and to be treated like family. Give Alan’s a call and we’re sure that like Eileen, you’ll be sold on this family! Alan’s Plumbing

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
Chronic Back Pain Relief and Sideways Hugs Loretta’s Story
L
by Amy Sharp
oretta Henry has been experiencing back issues since she was 28 years old. “I jumped from doctor to doctor,” says Loretta. “When one couldn’t find anything wrong, I’d look elsewhere for answers. After ten years of living with the pain, one doctor suggested neck surgery. I found temporary relief, but five years later something changed and extreme pain was back in my arm and neck. In 2010 I underwent another surgery.” But in 2013, Loretta was still experiencing pain, so she retired...quit her job. “I thought by not sitting at a desk and getting some rest, I would get better. I was wrong, the symptoms got worse. My knees hurt badly...I had no balance and walked deliberately while holding on to walls. I had pain in my extremities. I can tolerate a lot of pain, but I was at my lowest point both physically and mentally. I continued to live that way, but three months ago something changed again. This time it was my lower back and the pain was going down my right leg, and I was also experiencing cramping in that leg. An MRI revealed disc degeneration and sciatica, and my doctor suggested I see a neurologist...but I knew that probably meant a third surgery. I could see the pattern...surgery every five years. I’ve heard how painful it is to recover from lower back surgery, and I was tired of pain.” Determined to not go through another surgery, Loretta looked up chiropractors covered by her insurance. She discovered Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Land Health Center right down the street from her. “I prayed and prayed that this was the answer,” says Loretta. “Dr. Harris looked at my MRI and reports and did some x-rays of his own. My whole back was out of alignment. Dr. Harris put together a treatment plan for me. I put all my faith in that plan. I really needed it to work.” “One thing I really appreciate is the professionalism of Dr. Harris’ entire staff. The office runs smoothly...everyone’s cooperation is impressive. And Dr. Harris just reminds me of a sweet grandpa. I call him ‘Sideways Hugs’ because anytime you’re standing in his ‘hugging zone’ he puts his arm around you and gives the most genuine hug from the side. He is truly a doctor that cares about his patients.” Today, Loretta is at the end of her treatment plan. “On a scale of 0-10,” says Loretta, “my pain is a 0 to 1 most of the time. I just feel a whole lot better! HAD I GONE TO DR. HARRIS YEARS AGO, I COULD HAVE SAVED MYSELF A LOT OF PAIN, AND I WOULD PROBABLY STILL BE WORKING. I just hold Dr. Harris in the highest regard. I prayed so hard for this kind of relief, and I’m thankful to finally be getting it!” 8 ~ UPCLOSE ~ October 2015

Why Have Your
Furnace Checked
by Susan Profilet
B
efore the cold weather hits, experts recommend having a professional examine your furnace to keep it in good running order and prevent it from failing when you need it the most. A large percentage of no-heat calls in the winter are related to a lack of maintenance. Brian Jackson of Jackson Air and Heat in Sugar Land says, “It’s not a coincidence that unchecked systems seem to breakdown at the most inconvenient times. Left unserviced, a furnace can stop working suddenly... leaving you in the cold. Your heating (and cooling) system is a mechanical system with moving parts and pieces that need to be cleaned, inspected and adjusted. We make sure your furnace is running as efficiently as possible, because if it’s not...it could be working harder than necessary, increasing your energy bill, and setting itself up for a breakdown.” But you live in Texas...your furnace doesn’t run continuously through the winter, so there’s no need to check it every year. “This assumption is not only wrong,” says Brian, “it’s dangerous. Furnaces burn fuel to produce heat. This combustion process must be precise to maintain efficiency and safety...and even a small problem can lead to gas leaking into your home or dangerous carbon monoxide levels. You may not even know you have a problem because carbon
This Fall?
monoxide is colorless and odorless. It’s not worth the risk to you and your family to not have it checked!” Maintaining your heating and A/C system should be as routine going to the dentist every six months, and there’s no better time to start than now. When Jackson Air and Heat performs your
maintenance check, you can be part of their all-new “worry-free” service agreement. Brian says, “We make sure your system is in great condition...but we also realize that unforeseen things do happen. That’s why our agreement is worry-free. As a maintenance customer, you’ll get priority service when you do need us, 15% off all repairs, we will never charge you a service call and we will perform an air conditioning tune up next spring. It’s a great deal!” Jackson Air and Heat is the oldest Trane Comfort Specialist in Sugar Land. They are endorsed by SugarLandNetwork. com, and are recipients of both the Angie’s List “Super Service” award and BBB Award of Excellence. “If you haven’t had your furnace checked this fall, I strongly encourage you to do so,” says Brian. “Not only is it inconvenient when your system fails, but holiday repairs cost much more than preventive maintenance. You don’t want to wait until the week before Thanksgiving to get your system checked. October is the best time to make sure your family will be safe when you need to switch from A/C to heat.”

A Surgeon that Truly Cares

“I

’d had breast reduction surgery that went really, really badly,” says Debra Waterman. “My doctor tried to fix it three times...including putting in implants to make things look right. Still, my left breast was all the way to the side. You would have to see it to believe it. I really didn’t think it could ever be fixed.” When Debra moved to Texas, she decided to give it one last shot. “I looked up doctors and randomly picked Dr. Eric Humble,” says Debra. “But the minute I walked in the door, I knew I had found the right place. Everyone in the office was extremely caring...it was an amazing feeling, absolutely fantastic. Dr. Humble spent a tremendous amount of time with me talking about my situation. He was completely honest, and explained my options. He told what to expect with each option and explained how the results would look. I really didn’t want the implants...one had gotten really hard, and Dr. Humble explained that once that happens, it generally happens again with a new implant.” Together with Dr. Humble, Debra decided to remove the implants and do a breast lift. “The end result would be smaller,” says Debra, “but I really needed this to be it. I did not want to go through another surgery.” “The thing about Dr. Humble,” continues Debra, “is that
he truly cares about you and your results. That’s a rare find in a doctor these days. He calls personally to check in, and gives you his cell number in case you need anything. That is really, really comforting. My follow-up fell on Thanksgiving Day and he met me--on the holiday--at his office. His interest is absolutely in what’s best for you. And my results...perfect! I couldn’t be happier! After three bad surgeries, I’m still in shock at the kind of care and results I experienced with Dr. Humble and everyone at Sugar Land Face & Body. I’m looking into some of the other services he provides and I’m a firm believer that no one should have surgery without him!” Board certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Humble says,“Feeling at peace about your appearance is one of the keys to self-confidence. No one should have to live with a perceived ‘deficiency,’ especially one caused by a surgery gone horribly wrong. When you come into my office, your comfort both physically and mentally is of the utmost importance to me. And just as I did with Debra, I’ll be completely honest with you about your possibilities, making sure you understand your options and the expected results before we ever go to surgery. As a plastic surgeon, my reward is bringing out your self-confidence and love of life. How can I help you?”

A House
Built for a
T
hirteen year veteran, SSG Charles R. Landry, Jr. experienced 39 months of active combat. Among other things, his tour of duty included numerous firefights, vehicle borne IEDs, friendly and enemy casualities, and rocket attacks. The trauma Landry endured through his deployments had a significant impact on his behavior. After seeking out help, Landry was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, and traumatic brain disorder. But Landry is a fighter and a hero...and he is determined to live a normal life, being the best husband to his wife Kathleen, and father to his beautiful daughter Aylani, son Tyree, and his third child expected in January. On September 4th during the Skeeters baseball game, together with Tilson Homes and Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land, Operation FINALLY HOME took a big step in helping make the Landry family dreams come true. As part of a surprise announcement, the Landry family learned they would be receiving a brand-new mortgage-free home built right here in Fort Bend County. It all started on Veterans Day nearly a year ago, when Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land launched their “Buy a Truck,
Hero
House a Hero” campaign at the dealership. For every new Silverado truck purchased, $250 of the purchase price went toward a house for a Fort Bend County-area wounded veteran. Classic Chevy owner Don Kerstetter says, “Each new truck buyer signed their name to our Wall of Honor. Together with our customers, we reached our goal of $75,000. I come from a military family and have done quite a bit of support for veterans and their families locally. We are proud to help the Landry family take the weight of a mortgage off their shoulders.” Operation FINALLY HOME provides custom-built, mortgage-free homes to America’s Heroes and the widows of the fallen who have sacrificed so much defending our freedom. By uniting corporate sponsors like Classic Chevy and Tilson Homes, plus contributions from individuals and volunteers like all of us, Operation FINALLY HOME helps these heroes and their families transition to the home front by addressing one of their most pressing needs – a home to call their own. Construction of the Landry’s new home will be lead by Tilson Homes. This will be the fifth home Tilson has supported with Operation FINALLY HOME. Who Does
Pest Control
Your Favorite Restaurant? for

D
id you know that The City of Sugar Land has strict guidelines for all of our fabulous food establishments? Among the long list of requirements to pass inspection, all restaurants must provide proof of monthly pest control/extermination. John Onofrey, owner of BUGCO Pest Control and Top 2 Bottom Inspections, loves a good steak. He and his family are frequent diners at Fernando’s Steakhouse—Sugar Land’s upscale locale for steaks and seafood prepared with Latin flair. One day Fernando—owner and namesake of Fernando’s Restaurant—was flipping through UpClose magazine. “There was a picture of John!” says Fernando. “He was the pest guy for Classic Chevy. I’d had no idea that’s what he did for a living. The next time he came into the restaurant, I pulled him aside and asked if we could talk. I had known him for quite sometime as a customer and he is just the kind of guy I like to do business with. I wasted no time in signing BUGCO as the pest control company for my restaurant.” John says, “We are so honored to be the company of choice for Fernando’s, one of my favorites! Where else can you enjoy exquisite food and service, plus candlelight, soft music, linen tablecloths and napkins? It’s a great place to relax or dance a few rounds on the dance floor with your sweetie. And I can tell you that I’ve seen that kitchen with my own eyes. The kitchen at Fernando’s is one of the cleanest around and as far as I’m concerned it’s going to stay that way.” “I have been very pleased with the service that BUGCO provides,” continues Fernando. “Everyone that works for John is extremely polite. They show up on schedule driving a company vehicle and wearing a uniform...very professional. They get their job done quickly and are out of our way so that we can do ours. I’ve absolutely recommended them
to other restaurants and businesses. I’d bet money you get the same great service and integrity with John’s other business, Top 2 Bottom Inspections. I haven’t had a need to use them yet...but the next time I need a building or home inspected...I’m calling John!” BUGCO Pest Control has an outstanding reputation for attention to detail in the Greater Houston Area. “We realize that business owners want this required and necessary service performed discreetly,” says Chris Millward, the Operations Manager at BUGCO, “especially when it’s during business hours. We also gladly accommodate our commercial customers by coming in after closing if they wish. I know good commercial pest control providers are hard to come by...but here at BUGCO we vow to do whatever it takes to satisfy your needs. It’s the reason so many of our business clients and residential clients have relied on us for years!”

elebrities have a big incentive to stay professionally skinny, professionally beautiful and professionally young. Who doesn’t marvel at Jennifer Aniston’s flawless sun-kissed skin or Sandra Bullock’s ability to gracefully stave off the aging process? But what is their secret? “Celebrities love the Vampire Facelift,” says Dr. Jeffery Alford of Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss. “It’s you, only better! Dermal fillers, if used improperly, can impart a kind of too-smooth vinyl effect to the skin. With the Vampire Facelift, we aren’t using hyaluronic acid—the primary ingredient in dermal fillers. We are using your own blood...spun down to obtain an oxygen-rich platelet layer. We then inject those platelets into your face. Pain is not a factor, we use numbing gel first. And the effect is not only immediate, it improves over time.”
The Lowdown When you use your own blood, there is minimal chance your body will reject it or develop an allergic reaction...making the Vampire Facelift both safe and effective.. Your skin will be tighter, it will have the dewy radiance you had when you were younger and your wrinkles will be noticeably reduced. The best part is there’s no wind-tunnel effect, no stitches, and it only takes about an hour. So if you want to keep your “secret” a secret, no one has to know! But maybe you’re more worried about those stubborn pockets of fat and cellulite that no dieting or exercise seem to touch. “I-Lipo is another secret of the Stars!” says Dr. Alford. “It’s an FDA-approved, safe, affordable, painless and highly effective method that utilizes low level lasers to contour your body and smooth cellulite. You can lose 1-2 dress sizes with no needles and no down time, and there’s no bruising or swelling. I-Lipo dissolves fat without damaging the surrounding tissue...and like the Vampire Facelift, you can get it done over your lunch hour.” “I’m a firm believer in working from the outside in,” says Dr. Alford. “If a woman feels young and beautiful, she will radiate the kind of confidence that impacts every part of her life. There is no shame in wanting to look your best. Getting my patients the results they want is what makes my job so enjoyable. Call and make an appointment. Together, we’ll find the best and most natural solutions for you...and I promise, you’ll feel like a Hollywood Star!” Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss 832-494-7469 • 16651 SW Fwy #100 www.sugarlandwellness.net www.medi-health.com

Medicine...It’s Not One-Size-Fits-All
iving beings that require medication come in different sizes, shapes, personalities and preferences. So when it comes to medication, why do we assume we all have the same needs? Dr. Lance Campbell Pharm.D., R.Ph., owner of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, says, “We are fortunate to have modern medicine in our lives. But to really see it’s effectiveness, the patient needs to take the medication...which at times can be difficult. With compounding--the practice where licensed pharmacists combine, mix, or alter the ingredients of a drug to create a medication tailored to the needs of the individual patient--we can compound drugs in a wide variety of ways, including liquids, gels, creams, ointments, nasal sprays, suppositories, lozenges and lollipops...and to some we can even add flavors.” That’s a lot of great options...and it makes taking medication easier than ever for those that struggle with swallowing pills. Imagine giving a cherry lollipop to your sweet child or simply rubbing a lotion on your elderly parent’s forearm to deliver their medicine. And don’t forget pets! Dr. Campbell says, “No one likes hiding pills in food for their pet! We can compound flavored liquids, creams, and chewable treats. Prescriptions for creams can be rubbed into the ear (like every dog loves!) or liquids and chewy treats can be flavored with fish, chicken or beef to make your dog or cat say ‘yum!’” And just as important as delivery of the medication is dosage and ingredients. Dr. Campbell says, “When you need 1.2 mg of a medication, you shouldn’t have to settle for 1 mg or 2 because that is how it’s manufactured. Either you aren’t

getting enough...or you’re getting too much, which can be a bad thing! With compounding, we can create the lowest dosage possible that still delivers the desired results.” Commercially manufactured medications commonly contain lactose, preservatives, dyes, gluten, sugar and a variety of other non-active ingredients. Sound like a list of items you’re trying to avoid? Dr. Campbell says, “When we compound your medication, any or all of these ingredients can be left out. Maybe it’s not an ingredient you’re trying to avoid, but an undesired side effect like drowsiness or nausea. If we deliver the medicine in another form, like as a lotion or gel, we can eliminate many of those side effects.” Sound inconvenient to get a ‘special’ medicine somewhere else? The team at Campbell’s has made it their mission to be your family’s one-stop pharmacy. Dr. Campbell says, “From specialized compounded medications to blood pressure medications, prenatal vitamins, antibiotics and all commercially available medicine, we work closely with you, and we accept most major prescription and insurance plans. Everything you need is right here at our friendly neighborhood stop!” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 Houston • 713-668-4833 6603 Kirby Dr., Houston, TX 77005 www.campbellscompounding.com

his month, more than 2,000 are expected at Red Potato’s biggest and best Market Days to date. Red Potato Market celebrates it’s second anniversary and 5th event in the Big Red Barn. “We have something for everyone,” says Laurie Cuthbertson, co-owner of Red Potato Market. “We’ve selected over 70 vendors from our area and areas as far away as Louisiana and Virginia. You’ll find antiques, vintage home furnishings, art, photography, crafts, lighting, glass, pottery, iron, lawn and garden items, vintage linens and clothing, fresh produce, beef, cheese, eggs and more!” And the theme of this October’s Market Days? Repurpose...because that’s what the ladies of Red Potato Market have done with the Event Center. Owner Debra Sabrsula says, “I grew with this barn—the Jim Reno barn. The late Jim Reno was a noted sculptor of western subjects and a legend in the cutting horse industry. This barn was his arena. The barn has amazing memories, and instead of tearing it down, we painted it red and repurposed it. Not just for Market Days, but as a charming and distinctive special events facility the entire community can enjoy. We’ve
added a cement floor, restrooms and kitchen to the 15,000 sq ft barn, making it the perfect location for all sorts of events, including weddings, family reunions, corporate and private parties. Stop by Market Days and check it out!” Have your own repurposing idea? Enter the Market Days Repurposing contest! Laurie says, “We are challenging our vendors and customers to create surprising new life for old things. Judging will be by local celebrities, we’ll have cool prizes, and we’ll display all entries during Market Days...we can even sell your item if you wish. Check our website for complete details.” So what will you find at The Big Red Barn? Red Potato Market Days runs October 23-24 from 9am till 5pm. With free parking, live entertainment, activities for the kids and food trucks on sight—in addition to some of the best shopping around—it’s an event you and your family won’t want to miss! $5 Admission. David & Robyn describe the work of Grand Windows & Interiors as “innovatively transforming our home’s décor...inviting, striking, and uniquely ours. Our wish...a beautiful home in which to entertain friends and family. Wish granted. Beautiful...and now our friends are going to have their wedding here! We can’t wait.” Proudly, Caron Lopez, designer and owner of Grand Windows & Interiors, says “I am so honored--this is the second home I’ve done recently that has had a wedding in the home because of the new, gorgeous décor. Their newly constructed butler’s pantry will be put to good use.” Ballerinas, Madison and Kennedy Grace, are also enjoying the kitchen window seat and the extra room it freed up. The master bath, powder room, and guest baths are all updated with major changes and tile. Artist, Teresa Staley, faux finished the beam in the dining and silver-leafed the bath trumeau that Caron designed. ARE YOU
TIRED
OF LOOSE DENTURES? by Amy Sharp
“M
ini dental implants could be the easy solution!” says Dr. Lance Jue, DDS at A Beautiful Smile at Lake Pointe. “Traditional dentures can be unstable,” continues Dr. Jue. “And many times, the adhesives available just don’t provide the kind of stability people want in their teeth. Mini implants can keep them from sliding and give you more confidence when eating and speaking. They are significantly cheaper than traditional implants, and they are less invasive--bone surgery is not necessary and treatment time and healing time is greatly reduced. As an added bonus, if something does happen to the implant or if it gets loose, it’s much easier to fix than a traditional implant.” Mini implants are mini titanium alloy dental implants—rooted into the jawbone—that act as anchors to stabilize your dentures. A metal housing is incorporated into the base of your denture with a rubber O-ring that provides the seal that locks the pieces into place. They work with both traditional acrylic dentures or the more aesthetically pleasing porcelain bridges. Dr. Jue says, “With these implants, you have three options. We can give you a few implants to stabilize your traditional acrylic dentures...and you’ll be able to remove your dentures as you wish--no adhesive necessary. Or for a more permanent solution, we can create a porcelain bridge for you that’s anchored by mini implants. It’s footprint in the roof of your mouth is much smaller than a traditional acrylic denture, and it can be semi-permanent or permanent. Either way...it’s easy for you. I take out the semi-permanent denture every six months and clean it for you, or if you choose the permanent one, we cement it in. With all mini implants, you’ll be out and about, enjoying your favorite foods, talking with ease, laughing and smiling freely within a few days of the procedure.” From implants and dentures to check-ups and screenings to veneers and whitening...A Beautiful Smile is your comprehensive family dental office. Dr. Jue says “We pride ourselves on state-of-the-art general, cosmetic and restorative dentistry with extended hours...and even some Saturday appointments. Like the cutting-edge mini implants, we always promise you the best, most advanced care possible. And I take a personal interest in getting to know all of my patients. I enjoy learning about your life and want you to feel comfortable talking to me about your dental concerns.” Ready to say goodbye to loose dentures? Give Dr. Jue a call and set up a consultation today to talk about mini implants!

Outdoor Living Spaces Built Just for You! by Amy Sharp
magine a place outdoors where you can spend an entire day swimming, entertaining friends and family, serving drinks and meals and watching the big game. Kryshon Bratton, co-owner of Bratton Pools with her husband Mike, says, “We started building and renovating pools years ago. What we learned from our clients is that many times just a pool is not enough. To really enjoy their backyard...people want an outdoor living space.” Outdoor living space designs can include anything and everything you like. Pergolas, pavilions, a pool, waterfalls and fountains, rock formations, custom lighting and audio visual amenities...the possibilities are endless! Kryshon says, “If you are looking to spend your nights and weekends entertaining while enjoying the beautiful outdoors, we can construct a custom outdoor kitchen just for you. With concrete and granite countertops, industrial ice makers and refrigerators, warm drawers, ovens and stoves--anything your indoor kitchen has, we can make it a part of your outdoor kitchen. To extend the life of the outdoor space into fall and winter, an outdoor fire pit is a popular choice. Imagine nights gathered around the fire...in your own backyard. And to truly make the space yours, we can add custom waterfalls, spillovers, lighting, mounted televisions and speakers...whatever fills the needs of your family and makes it a space that everyone can truly enjoy.” 22 ~ UPCLOSE ~ October 2015
“Our outdoor living spaces undergo the same design process as our pools,” continues Kryshon. “We go out to your home, take a look at your space, and get a feel for what you are wanting. Then we come up with 3D plans where you can really see your ideas come to life. Every yard is different, so have no set designs. What I love is that through the designs, we really see the personality of our clients come out. The space really becomes your space!” And design is only the beginning of the fabulous service Bratton Pools provides. Kryshon says, “We never manage construction remotely. We are very hands-on and supervise the process directly every step of the way. Mike and I are committed to making sure you never feel in the dark...we are with you until your outdoor living space is finished to your satisfaction.” A family-owned and operated business, Bratton Pools maintains an A+ rating with the BBB. Check out Bratton Pools on FaceBook and see the endless possibilities for your outdoor living space. Your Vision is Our Mission
F
reddie Woodley, CEO of CX Titan Construction, has been swinging a hammer since before he could drive. As a teenage attendant at a Kansas City True Value, Freddie learned to build simple projects like doghouses. By age 15, he was in the lumberyard operating the forklift and gaining valuable insight into the different materials. Recognizing his talent, a local construction company took him on as an apprentice, where Freddie learned to both build homes and renovate and remodel them. As Freddie entered adulthood, he decided to make a change. He moved to Detroit, where an aunt took him in. “I was a young man,” says Freddie, “and a gentleman at our church took me under his wing and asked me what I wanted to do with my life. My only answer was ‘Find a job!’ But this man knew my skill set. As a token of appreciation for taking me in, I had built a deck onto my aunt’s house. The church frequently used the deck for BBQs and fellowship. My friend and mentor told me, ‘Look what you’ve built, you are the job!’ And that planted the seed in my head...I could promote my own business. I acquired licenses and everything I needed to be self sufficient...and my contracting business was born.” In Detroit, Freddie’s business enjoyed an outstanding reputation. In addition to high-quality work, Freddie gave discounts to senior citizens and others needing help. Business was great, but the Detroit weather was gray, and Freddie—plus his new growing family—longed for warmer weather and sunshine. In 2010, Freddie and his family landed in one of the hottest summers on record in Houston, TX. “We were really thinking,
‘What have we done?!’” says Freddie. But the family stuck it out and the heat subsided. They promoted their construction business and it flourished. “We did a lot of renovations and repairs,” says Freddie, “plus remodeling updates to kitchens and bathrooms. But as they say, ‘Everything’s bigger in Texas!’...and we wanted a piece of that too. So we expanded into the commercial arena.” Today, CX Titan Construction is a leading Houston commercial building services contractor. From new building construction to interior office buildouts to basic home remodels, CX Titan takes pride in delivering turn-key, quality results in a timely and efficient manner. Freddie says, “Your vision is our mission. We work with you and be there for you throughout the whole process. If you’re not 100% satisfied with our services, we make the necessary accommodations and meet your expectations. We are committed to it!” A HUB certified vendor for the State of Texas and member of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, CX Titan provides expertise and cutting-edge innovation coupled with traditional building construction methods, meeting all of your commercial and residential needs.
