Jewelry
Keeps Memories Alive... by Amy Sharp
…and diamonds and jewelry have been Maggy Horgan’s family business for three generations. That’s a lot of special occasions celebrated! Co-owner of Houston Diamond Outlet along with her husband Jay, Maggy’s family business started in the Los Angeles diamond district, where they import loose diamonds from Israel and Belgium and manufacture fine diamond jewelry right there on site. The family business has always sold wholesale to retailers, and when Maggy and Jay got in the business more than 25 years ago they travelled the country selling diamonds and diamond jewelry at trade shows. “But then we had a different idea,” says Jay. “We thought, why not take out the middle man and sell diamonds wholesale directly to the public?” That idea was ten years ago, when Jay and Maggy chose Houston as their destination, moved to Sugar Land, and opened the doors of Houston Diamond Outlet. “Our diamonds are 50-70% off retail price,” says Jay. “We can do that because we are the diamond dealer with our own manufacturing facility in LA...where we have access to the best diamonds at the best prices. And since we manufacture our own designs, we can sell direct to you at rock bottom prices. These diamonds are not junk. If someone is advertising a one carat diamond for less than $199...that’s junk. Everything we sell is guaranteed to be
the best price for the quality. And all pieces include a full gemological appraisal for insurance purposes.” The sparkling diamonds and fine jewelry at fabulous prices have only been outshined by Jay and Maggy’s commitment to our community and giving back. The couple’s three girls have attended FBISD schools, where Maggy is frequently seen volunteering. The couple enjoys supporting local businesses, and use their own business to support local charities like The Fort Bend Women’s Shelter, The Arthritis Foundation, Fort Bend Family Promise and most recently Fort Bend County’s Couture for the Cause “White Haute Affair” benefitting the American Cancer Society. “Houston Diamond Outlet both sponsored the event,” says Maggy, “and donated a diamond ring to the diamonds and champagne raffle. Over $10,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society, and the lucky winner took home a beautiful diamond ring. It’s our way of giving back to Sugar Land, the community that has done so much for us.” Do you have an upcoming special occasion? Whether it’s an engagement, anniversary, or you just need to tell someone how much they are loved this holiday season, you can keep the memories alive for generations with a diamond or piece of fine jewelry from Houston Diamond Outlet!

Great Expectations by Sara Adams
I
f you stand on your feet for most of the day and your legs are tired and achy, you’re not surprised...you sort of expect it. At least that’s what Jessica Trahan used to think. She is celebrating her eleventh year in education, her first seven years as a classroom teacher and now as the school counselor for Hood-Case Elementary School. She said, “I thought my legs were tired and achy because I was standing all of the time. And if I noticed any swelling in my calves or ankles, I just blamed it on eating too much salt.” After Jessica’s first appointment with Dr. Baltazar, she found out she should expect something different. He took the time to explain the genetics behind Jessica’s vein health. She learned the discomfort she was experiencing was from poor circulation and not just salt. From the beginning, Jessica trusted Dr. Baltazar. She said, “He explained my condition and gave me all the options.” And she couldn’t say enough about his staff, “They were warm, inviting, and very personable. I appreciated how they went out of their way to meet the individual needs of each patient...and they were able to accommodate my
unpredictable schedule by offering late appointments one day a week. After my first appointment with Dr. Baltazar, I felt well informed and educated enough to make healthy decisions for myself and my growing family.” Jessica elected to have her procedure done this past July. “It was easier than I expected. I felt comfortable and relaxed the entire time. My recovery went well, too. I was able to walk around that night and even help take care of our two kids. By the second or third day, everything was back to normal.” When asked if she would recommend Dr. Baltazar to anyone else, Jessica gave a resounding, “Yes! If anyone is unsure of their vein health, they should get everything checked out, don’t wait.” Dr. Ulises Baltazar is certified by the American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery. He is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates’ Sugar Land Vein Clinic, a practice dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers as well as leg swelling. He has been raising the expectations of his patients for over ten years.

A Doctor Worth Traveling To by Amy Sharp
M
odel and professional wrestler Brooke Adams lives in Houston. She has the plethora of Houston medical professionals at her backdoor, yet she chooses to drive to Fort Bend County to see Dr. Eric Humble at Sugar Land Face & Body. “I found Dr. Humble while researching CoolSculpting online,” says Brooke. “I’ve stayed fit for years, eating a great diet, working out, and running...but no one’s perfect, and I still carry cellulite on my legs. I couldn’t bring myself to consider cutting or liposuction...it’s invasive and has scary potential side effects. CoolSculpting seemed more mild, yet targeted the areas where I needed help. Dr. Humble’s office had great reviews, plus he offers dual CoolSculpting...which means two areas could be targeted at the same time with two machines, reducing procedure time. So I gave him a call!” “When I first visited, I felt right at home. The beautiful ladies in the office were super complimentary and helpful. And Dr. Humble was great. He’s so knowledgeable. He explained everything and calmed my nerves, and I never felt like I was being upsold. We moved forward, and the CoolSculpting sessions were awesome. I was super comfortable...I read books, did interviews, got by Amy Sharp sleep...it’s a great time to catch up on things while a huge machine freezes your fat away! It takes some time for the results to really kick in, but after a couple of months I was putting on my jeans and was like ‘Whoa!’ My legs were at least an inch smaller around! I was not expecting such significant results. Amazing!” “I’ve spent a lot of time prepping for aging through diet and exercise,” continues Brooke. “But now in my 30s, the lines have started creeping up on my face. Looking again for something non-invasive, the Vampire facial seemed perfect. But I had seen it on Keeping up with the Kardashians...and it looked painful! I spoke to Dr. Humble’s nurse, and she assured me that the show was inaccurate...it’s not painful, and it’s very popular. Dr. Humble walked me through the process and what it could do for me... again, so knowledgeable and patient. We did the procedure and WOW! Immediate results. My face is fuller, my pores are tight and there’s no sagging around my eyes. I highly recommend it, it’s unbelieveable!” “The drive to Sugar Land to see Dr. Humble is so worth it,” says Brooke. “I’m confident that he’ll never lead me to bad things or the wrong procedures...just things that enhance the body I’ve worked so hard for. I can’t say enough about him. He’s the best!” See Sugar Land Face and Body in action... performing some of Brooke’s procedures! F CUS Your Holidays in Perfect Balance by Olivia Cane

an you believe it’s been an entire year since the last time you lost your mind in holiday traffic? There’s no avoiding it. Every year, we promise ourselves that we’re going to do things differently--less shopping, less stress, more time with the family. Now imagine wanting to have a more enjoyable and relaxing holiday, but instead of external stressors, there are internal ones. Ones you can’t see. That would be your entire hormonal system. Teenagers aren’t the only ones who suffer from out-of-whack hormones. Perimenopause, full-blown menopause AND male menopause (characterized by low testosterone and low libido) are not only common, they’re inevitable. What’s not inevitable is how harshly those diminishing hormone levels are going to affect your health, your mood and your happiness. “Hormones affect every system in the body,” says Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. “The problem is hormones aren’t ‘real’ to us. We can’t see them. They’re not tangible. So we tend to dismiss them and undervalue their importance. But the symptoms are pretty easy to see--unexplained weight gain, loss of energy, diminished sex drive, erectile dysfunction, memory loss, muscle mass diminishment, depression. Even though you can’t see it, it’s a very important balance.” So what’s the first step in getting your hormones back in balance? Schedule a personal hormone consultation at Campbell’s Compounding. Dr. Omar Al-Kazzaz, R.Ph, Pharm. D., one of the Campbell’s pharmacists in Sugar Land, says, “When you come in for a personal consultation, we perform a saliva test to check your hormone lev-
els. Then we work closely with your doctor or our partner doctor close by to study your results. If needed, we can recommend a custom dosage of bio-identical hormones made just for you. All prescriptions are authorized by the doctor, and we monitor your progress together.” Don’t drag your feet through the holidays... no amount of holiday traffic can throw you off your game if you are looking and feeling your radiant best. Let Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy put you back on track not just for the holidays, but for life. r. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. in Stafford has been doing dental implants for many years. “They’re great,” says Dr. Lomonte. “Whether you’ve lost teeth due to an accident, an infection, or genetics, dental implants can give you the stability and beauty of ‘real teeth.’”

And now, dental implants just got easier with iSy (pronounced “easy”.) “You can get these implants during lunch and return to work,” says Dr. Lomonte. “Most patients are done in under an hour, with very minimal discomfort. iSy is a simple system, requiring fewer instruments and fewer steps...making them less expensive. And that savings is passed on to you, the patient. You can save about 40% off the cost of traditional implant fees.” Now is the time to take action. Your 2015 dental benefits are “use or lose it.” Dr. Lomonte says, “Each year, millions of people allow their dental benefits to go to waste. Nearly all plans have a yearly maximum, which is the absolute most money your plan will pay in a calendar year. But unused money does not rollover and is lost January 1st. As added incentive, we are offering these already less expensive iSy implants at an even deeper discount until the end of the year.” Remember, health flexible savings account money can also be used to pay for your portion of dental work. And as we all know, like dental plans FSAs are also “use or lose it!” Dr. Lomonte is currently one of the only dentists in the area offering iSy implants. “The name iSy stands for ‘Intelligent System,’” says Dr. Lomonte. “But ‘easy’ is a great description, as they are both easy and intelligent. There are so many advantages to dental implants and your smile is worth it! I’m always happy to listen to your questions and fully explain all aspects of implants. Call me and set up a consultation today... you can see how easy iSy can be!”

The Best Car Buying Experience
Ever by Amy Sharp
K
aren and Morris Francis of Katy knew exactly what they wanted in their new car. “We actually built it online together,” says Karen. “A 2016 Daytona Sunrise Orange Metallic Corvette Z06.” That car is now on order at Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land. “After deciding exactly what we wanted, Classic Chevy was NOT the first dealership we visited. The first dealership actually told us they had one, but when we got there, we’d been lured. Not only did they not have one, they didn’t have an allocation to order the car, and they spent a lot of time trying to sell us what they already had on the lot. We started searching online for our car, even looking in other states. We knew of Classic Chevy in nearby Sugar Land from their ads, and had heard they had a reputation for being upfront and honest.” “We’ve bought a lot of cars,” continues Karen, “including many from luxury dealerships. And we’ve had great experiences and not so great. This was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. General Manager Mark Kolon spent a considerable amount of time with us as we (especially I!) asked a lot of questions. I had some questions about the options we had selected, plus we were trading in a car. Since the Corvette was ordered,
it was a bit strange to give them our old car and leave empty handed. At no time did I ask a question and felt that Mark thought it was a silly question or acted not interested. He never gave the impression we were wasting his time. He was consistently very accommodating and reassuring...and didn’t try to push us to anything we didn’t want. I really don’t mean to gush, but I was incredibly surprised by the entire meeting!” Mark says, “I’m so excited for Karen and Morris to receive their new Corvette. And I can’t thank Karen enough for her kind words about us just doing our job. The way I look at it, buying a car is a serious family decision...so why wouldn’t I want to make sure every member of that family is confident in the purchase? Whether you’ve decided on the car of your dreams like Karen and Morris, or need help selecting the perfect fit for your family...we are here to help. And that same high standard exists in every one of our departments--new, pre-owned, on-site or internet sales, service, body shop, and financing--our focus is always you. Just give us call, drop by for a visit or check us out online at classicchevysugarland.com.” Experience the Classic Chevy difference for yourself...you may never buy another car “the old way” again!

Next Stop...St. Michael’s!
Great
Care through
Hurricanes
Baseball and
Woes by Amy Sharp
H
urricane Ike made landfall in the middle of the night back on September 13, 2008. A lot of us in Fort Bend County woke up to no power (or maybe we never went to sleep.) Greatwood Association Director Brian Shaw woke up to a 6 month old with pink eye. “Brice’s eye was just full of goo,” says Brian. “And as new parents, we were freaking out! It was Saturday, so the doctor was closed...and the ERs were full in the aftermath of the hurricane. My wife’s dad is a doctor, so we thought ‘great...we’ll just get him to prescribe the meds we need.’ But without power, the pharmacies were closed as well. We’d heard great things about St. Michael’s, so we took Brice there. We were in and out with our medicine in hand in 20 minutes. I was so impressed!”
A proud sponsor of Little League baseball, St. Michael’s Emergency Room provides quality, efficient emergency care through weather emergencies, sports injuries, whenever you feel you or your child needs emergency medical attention. “We have a warm, comfortable environment, with short wait times and a loving staff,” says Dr. Shannon Orsak, founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms. “Don’t hesitate...come to us and we’ll take care of you.” St. Michael’s is one of the few licensed, free-standing ER facilities with Joint Commission Accreditation, ACR certified radiology suites, and CLIA certified labs. They are in-network with AETNA and also accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. Your insurance MUST pay in-network benefits at the ER of YOUR CHOICE whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “outof-network.” 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, St. Michael’s is ready to help you!
Fast forward seven years and now Little Leaguer Brice took a baseball to the eye. “My initial thought was of course to take him to the ER,” says Brian. “Then the other parents convinced me otherwise. They recommended I call ahead to St. Michael’s, so that when I got there they’d be waiting. Given my previous experience at St. Michael’s, I knew that was the right decision...and that’s exactly what happened! We arrived, and they were ready for us. First they tried an adhesive to close the gash above Brice’s eye, but it didn’t hold. Brice and I both knew he needed stitches, and Brice was terrified. The entire staff was so patient with him, and talked him through the process. They could either put him to sleep and do the stitches, or do them right there with me by his side. Brice made the big boy decision to stay awake for the stitches. I was so proud of him and can’t say enough about the patience and caring of the entire staff at St. Michael’s. Afterward Brice said, ‘Wow, stitches aren’t a big deal...didn’t hurt at all.’ That’s absolutely amazing!”
At this time St Michael’s, due to governmental, bureaucratic decisions, is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

WORRY-FREE It’s Hard To Stop A Trane

f you live in southeast Texas, chances are you’re going to be running your air conditioner this Christmas. In fact, if air conditioners held their own Olympics, Texas air conditioners would win by default. Why? Because they’re running all the time! You need the peace of mind that comes from knowing your air conditioner is operating as efficiently, cheaply and effectively as it possibly can...and without the headache of possible service call charges. That’s why Brian Jackson at Jackson Air and Heat now offers an all-new worry-free service agreement. “We’ve served the Sugar Land, Katy, Richmond and Missouri City area for three generations now,” says Brian. “Your family is like our family. Our worryfree service agreement means you pay no service call charges, you get 15% off repairs, receive priority service, and you can rest easy knowing that we will make sure that your equipment stays as
clean and efficient as it was the day you bought it. And when you do need heat, your worry-free service agreement covers your furnace too! Your air conditioning and heating systems are an important investment. It pays to have professionals come out to make sure nothing costly or dangerous is going on. Especially during the holidays when everyone’s here and you can expect a lot of traffic through your house.” Since 1982, Jackson Air and Heat has been serving area neighborhoods. As a family owned and operated business, they are rightly proud of the fact that 80% of their new customers are referred to them by existing customers. As Brian explains, “Our commitment is not just to your comfort but to you. The loyalty our customers show us is the same loyalty Jackson Air and Heat shows them.” Jackson Air is the oldest Trane dealer in Sugar Land. “Southeast Texas presents some unique air conditioning challenges,”
by Olivia Cane says Brian. “An off-brand air conditioning unit just isn’t enough to combat both our heat and our humidity. Trane does both, and does it at a lower cost yet with higher efficiency. With instant manufacturer’s rebates or 0% financing, right now is also a great time to take advantage of offseason prices on all new variable-speed Trane systems. For a limited time, you may also qualify for Centerpoint rebates of up to $1000.” This holiday, you may have to run your air conditioner, but with Jackson Air and Heat, at least that air conditioner won’t be running you ragged. ne of the best things about living down south is that you can enjoy your swimming pool year round. Jeffery Brehm really enjoys having weekend barbeques around the pool with his family. He says, “I love my pool but it was getting old and needed to be renovated. It was pretty basic when it was installed, and it had seen better days. We wanted to get it updated as well as do some renovations in our backyard. We had read about Bratton Pools in a magazine and they came highly recommended to us. We got a bid from them...and it came in at an excellent price.” Fast forward to today and now he has a gorgeous pool...he’s gone from outdated to oasis! “A lot of people don’t realize what’s possible when you renovate your old pool,” says Kryshon Bratton, co-owner of Bratton Pools along with husband Michael. “Even the simplest of designs can be transformed into beautiful outdoor escapes. At Jeffery’s house, we first removed the white stained plaster and put in a stain-proof pebble plaster in a color called Midnight Sea Finish. In this finish, glossy black pebbles are combined with blue and red pebbles and sea shells. Then we replaced the deteriorating flagstone with a durable and beautiful pool coping. The outdated tile was replaced with a natural tile to match the color of the waterfall rocks. Water features are always fabulous additions...not only are they aesthetically pleasing, but if you
can hear traffic or other neighborhood noises from your backyard, the sound of the spillover can really mitigate the unwanted noise.” And the end result? A beautiful retreat where Jeffery and his family get to relax and enjoy each other! Bratton Pools is a family owned and operated company that maintains an A+ rating with the BBB of Houston. Michael says, “Whether you’re building a new pool or doing a major overhaul like Jeffrey, we make sure you experience high quality service throughout each stage of design and construction. We are here to help with pool design, energy efficient solutions, color options, and style elements. And once we start construction, we promise top-of-the-line equipment, stateof-the-art technology, and highly-skilled professionals on the job.” Jeffrey says, “The work Bratton Pools did for me is really high quality work...definitely an ‘A’ for workmanship. melda Mahoney has been cleaning houses since her children were little. “It was the perfect job for a little money,” says her daughter Casandra. “And it allowed my mom to be there for us kids both in the mornings and after school.” “I remember that one of her first jobs was for a man named Mr. House. Mr. House didn’t live close to us, and about half of what mom made on the job went to gas and babysitting. But she had to start somewhere. And as we grew, she picked up more houses. When we were old enough to help during the summers, we did. My brother’s job was wiping down the doors and I polished the door knobs.” In 2007 Imelda launched her company, Mahoney’s House Cleaning Services. “She actually started it with a few ladies on our street, and another neighbor watched all the kids! It was family helping family,” says Casandra. “Even as Mom added employees, if they didn’t have a place to leave their kids or their own sitter was sick, they knew our neighbor would pitch in.” With her own company, Imelda was able to put her children through school. Casandra, a U of H graduate, went on to work with families of special needs children at Easter Seals and other places. She also remained close to the business, helping Imelda. When her own daughter was born, she decided to go back to work with her mom to help grow the business. “We are a team of women working together and helping each other,” says Casandra. “Through my work at Easter Seals, I saw a lot of women unable to take on or even keep jobs because the hours weren’t flexible or there was no understanding when they couldn’t come in because of their kids. That doesn’t happen here. We employ mothers who are in similar situations and offer them the flexibility that they need so that our teams can be consistent and our employees feel that they are appreciated. I feel as if it is our mission to provide these hardworking women with gainful employment all while providing excep-

They can work on a schedule that’s convenient for you, and are also available to do almost any type of house service you can think of. “We will never turn down a cleaning project! Our list of services is always growing, all our clients have to do is ask,” says Casandra. “We always go above and beyond to exceed your expectations. We guarantee our services and work hard to make sure our clients feel that they have chosen the best company to clean their house. I really encourage you to let our fabulous teams of women help you...because by letting them help you, you are helping them succeed. Making Your Kids Smile Is Just The Beginning
W

hen your kids are small, fixing boo-boos is usually no more complicated than administering a kiss and a Band-Aid...maybe throw in a scoop of our beloved (and much welcomed back!) Blue Bell ice cream. But what happens when something more serious happens? Mouth and dental injuries are woefully common during childhood. Dental injuries occur to about fifty percent of our kids...meaning your child might be a football or basketball game away from having a knocked out or chipped tooth. “In most cases, tooth and mouth injuries are not life threatening and don’t require a trip to the ER,” explains Dr. Bianca Sanchez at Little People’s Dentistry. “If there is pain or a tooth that’s chipped, missing or wobbly, it’s a good idea to come in as soon as possible. We can repair a broken tooth with tooth-colored resin. But if a permanent tooth is knocked out, the most important thing is to reimplant it right away. Holding the tooth by the crown, rinse it with water if it’s dirty, and carefully push the tooth into its socket with your finger. Hold the tooth in place or have your child gently bite down on it. Eighty-five percent of teeth that are put back in the tooth socket within five minutes survive, so don’t hesitate. And this is a dental emergency...so once you get the tooth in place, head to
your dentist right away!” Dr. Sanchez is not only an expert in teeth belonging to the pediatric crowd, as a mother herself, she has the caring, chairside manner of someone who truly loves and understands them. That’s why she goes to such extraordinary lengths to make kids feel comfortable the minute they set foot inside her office. There’s a carnival game room, a surfboard counter and videos galore. “It’s much easier to look inside a patient’s mouth when he or she is already smiling,” says Dr. Sanchez. When it comes to taking care of your children’s smile--even when it’s an injured smile--you can count on Dr. Bianca Sanchez. Give her a call today! lot actually! Terri and Pat Connell have lived in their Colony Bend home since 1991. “We raised our three daughters here,” says Terri. “And we love the location. We knew we wanted to stay, but it was time for some changes. We decided to start in the master suite where the house had water damage from a storm. The work included new cabinets, removing a bathroom wall, separating the vanity giving Pat his own space, and new flooring and baseboards in the bedroom and bathroom.” A friend recommended Terri visit locally-owned Natural Stone Gallery in Stafford, where Larry Snyder helped her with cabinet

and color options. Larry also gave Terri a card for contractor Teri Gilberg, better known as ‘The Re-Modelista.’ “We called her for a bid,” says Terri, “and after a couple of days she followed up to see if we had made a decision. That impressed us, plus we felt we had really clicked when we met. We picked her to do the master suite remodel, and we asked her to do our kitchen as well!” In the kitchen, the existing cabinets would be stained, the floor replaced, granite installed, plus a new sink, can lights and paint. Two large remodeling projects, and The Re-Modelista orchestrated their execution concurrently. “Throughout the entire process, The Re-Modelista was great,” says Terri. “She texted everyday, and stopped by and checked on the projects. This was the first time we had ever remodeled anything, so we weren’t sure what to expect. But she made it easy. She kept us on budget and held my hand while we picked out tiles and chose colors, explaining everything. She definitely made it bearable, even though we did have to sleep upstairs for a month!” A month! In a mere four weeks, The Re-Modelista gave the Connells a master bath remodel, a major kitchen upgrade, and new flooring and baseboards in the master bedroom. All within the limits of the budget. “All of my friends are so impressed and so am I,” says Terri. “Everyone asks for The Re-Modelista’s card and I gladly give it to them!”

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
A Skeptic Turned
Believer E
by Amy Sharp
rmelinda Ortiz discovered eight years ago that she had sciatica and two herniated discs in her lower back. “At the time,” says Ermelinda, “I sought treatment at a chiropractor (NOT Dr. Harris.) It was awful, painful and scary. I actually felt worse when I left. For the next eight years, whenever it flared up, I controlled the pain with anti-inflammatories. Until recently, when it got really bad. Even after two back-to-back 7-day steroid courses, it was hard to walk, hard to drive, and hard to work. A friend had recommended Dr. Steve Harris at Sugar Land Health Center. Given my past experience with a chiropractor, I was very skeptical. But I was in dire straits, so I scheduled that appointment out of sheer desperation.” “Dr. Harris did x-rays, and he concurred on the sciatica and herniated discs. Then he put together an extremely thorough, step-by-step treatment plan that involved no drugs and no downtime. I had immediate results! I’m now two-thirds of the way through the treatment plan. One of the things I love is that at the halfway point, he re-evaluates to measure progress. I can feel the progress, but to see it on the x-ray is amazing!” Ermelinda lives and works near the Galleria. She repeatedly makes the 59 south trek in 4:30 traffic to see Dr. Harris for her treatments. “I love it,” says Ermelinda, “because when I walk out of that office, I feel so relaxed...like I’d just been to a spa. And it’s a great place to be. The entire staff is so wonderful and accommodating. They really care about you and take care of you. When I leave, I drive home just enjoying the moment. I know Dr. Harris hasn’t made me bullet-proof, that I’ll still have to take care of myself. But I’m so grateful for what he has done for me, and I have certainly recommended him to others that have serious back issues!” “Back pain is the number one symptom I see,” says Dr. Harris. “While medicine may dull or numb your pain, it doesn’t fix the problem. I’m so glad I could provide Ermelinda with a safe and natural way to relieve and treat her back pain.” Dr. Harris has been working in chiropractic since 1976 and is a leader in his field. He trains other doctors in spinal decompression techniques for the treatment of herniated discs and other back conditions. If you live with back pain, set up a consultation with Dr. Harris today!

...A Rare Find
r. Rick Kline DDS at Smile Texas on Sweetwater has more than 20 years experience providing restorative dentistry techniques. “My office has a lot of elaborate plumbing,” says Dr. Kline, “both in the ground and in the ceiling. It’s imperative that it’s done right, because plumbing problems can turn into expensive problems very quickly. I found Alan’s Plumbing, a family-owned and operated business that I consider in the top echelon of Fort Bend County businesses, more than 20 years ago. I haven’t called another plumber since.”
Alan’s Plumbing is owned by master plumber Alan Burkhalter. His wife Jennifer answers the phones, and his crew includes sons Luke and Beau, Alan’s brother Chris, and plumbing apprentice Jaime. Dr. Kline has called Alan’s for new construction, renovations and other problems that creep up over the course of 20 years. “I’ve really gotten to know this family,” says Dr. Kline. “And I’ve watched the boys grow up. This business is absolutely amazing. On-time, budget-friendly, kind, courteous, trustworthy, and there is never any up selling. I’m comfortable having them around

my family when I’m not there, and I’m comfortable leaving a key for access when no one is around. When I’ve had water emergencies in both the office and the house, they’ve sent someone out as fast as they could and taken care of the problem in a timely manner. The most recent was a pipe that came loose at the office. Had it busted or leaked, I would have had thousands of dollars worth of damage. But I called Alan’s and they had it taken care of in no time. And they always leave the work area cleaner than when they arrive. A company like this is really a rare find these days!” When you need a plumber, find out for yourself why Alan’s Plumbing is Fort Bend’s most reliable neighborhood plumber. veryone who’s anyone knows that the chic yet casual Pier 36 on Hwy 90A in Richmond is the place to be for fabulous seafood. Started back in 1997 by Jimmy Cantu and his parents, their family recipes quickly became Fort Bend favorites. People rush from miles around for the fresh seafood…shrimp, red snapper and flounder straight from the Gulf, and local farm raised domestic catfish and oysters from the Texas and Louisiana coast. Today that menu has grown to include new features like ceviche, grilled tuna, grilled rainbow trout, and crabmeat stuffed mushrooms. And the full service bar, Pete’s Oyster Bar, is a can’t miss. Jimmy says, “We now have our very own resident mixologist Rob. Our new holiday drinks include the ‘Life’s Peachy’—peach vodka, citrus juices and Pimm’s, and the ‘Happy Wife, Happy Life,’—a perfect blend of pineapple vodka, fresh blackberries, lime juice and Chambord (a red and black raspberry infused liqueur.)” Or maybe oysters on the half shell with a “Battle Line Brown Ale” from local Texian Brewing Company is more your style. However you like to kick back and relax, Rob and the crew at the Oyster Bar have you covered! Want to bring a little of that family recipe magic to your holiday party? Check out Pier 36 catering. hen you take your child to the dentist, it should be as enjoyable and comfortable as possible! That’s the goal of mother-of-two Dr. Shilpa Chandiwal, DDS at Healthy Teeth Pediatric Dentistry. “I really like working with young children,” says Dr. Shilpa. “It is so much fun to interact with them at this age...and I want to ease their fear, so they are comfortable asking me questions about brushing and taking care of their teeth.” The ADA recommends that children start seeing the dentist when they have eight baby teeth...for most kids, that’s before the age of one. Dr. Shilpa says, “We don’t do a whole lot in those early years...it’s really all about establishing a positive relationship with your child and evaluating your child’s dental health. And we’re laying the groundwork for a lifetime of healthy teeth and smiles!” An honors graduate of Columbia University in New York, Dr. Shilpa’s passion for children is evident in all that she does. She chose advanced training in Pediatric Dentistry and her postdoctoral training took place at the Columbia University’s New York Presbyterian Hospital where she specialized in all areas of children’s dentistry. Together with Health Care International, she actively participated in an outreach program serving the underprivileged children in impoverished Jamaica.
